Novel high-viscosity polyacrylamidated chitosan for neural tissue engineering: fabrication of anisotropic neurodurable scaffold via molecular disposition of persulfate-mediated polymer slicing and complexation

Synthesis of carboxymethyl starch co (polyacrylamide/ polyacrylic acid) hydrogel for removing methylene blue dye from aqueous solution

Natural polysaccharides, notably starch, have garnered attention for their accessibility, cost-effectiveness, and biodegradability. Modifying starch to carboxymethyl starch enhances its solubility, swelling capacity, and adsorption efficiency. This research examines the synthesis of an effective hydrogel adsorbent based on carboxymethyl starch for the elimination of methylene blue from aqueous solutions. The hydrogel was synthesized using polyacrylamide and polyacrylic acid as monomers, ammonium persulfate as the initiator, and N,N'-methylenebisacrylamide as the cross-linker. Through FESEM, swelling morphology was evaluated in both distilled water and methylene blue dye. The adsorption data elucidated that the adsorption capacity of the hydrogel significantly depends on the dosage of the adsorbent, pH, and concentration of the MB dye. At a pH of 7 and a dye concentration of 250 mg/L, the hydrogel exhibited an impressive 95 % removal rate for methylene blue. The results indicate that the adsorption process follows pseudo-second-order kinetics and conforms well to the Langmuir adsorption isotherm, indicating a maximum adsorption capacity of 1700 mg/g. According to the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and FTIR analysis, methylene blue chemisorbs to the adsorbent material. Hydrogel absorbents regulate adsorption through both intra-particle diffusion and liquid film diffusion. These results highlight the potential of the new hydrogel absorber for water purification.

Hysteresis-Free, Elastic, and Tough Hydrogel with Stretch-Rate Independence and High Stability in Physiological Conditions

Many existing synthetic hydrogels are inappropriate for repetitive motions because of large hysteresis, and their mechanical properties in warm and saline physiological conditions remain understudied. In this study, a stretch-rate-independent, hysteresis-free, elastic, and tough nanocomposite hydrogel that can maintain its mechanical properties in phosphate-buffered saline of 37 °C similar to warm and saline conditions of the human body is developed. The strength, stiffness, and toughness of the hydrogel are simultaneously reinforced by biomimetic silica nanoparticles with a surface of embedded circular polyamine chains. Such distinctive surfaces form robust interfacial interactions by local topological folding/entanglement with the polymer chains of the matrix. Load transfer from the soft polymer matrix to stiff nanoparticles, along with the elastic sliding/unfolding/disentanglement of polymer chains, overcomes the traditional trade-off between strength/stiffness and toughness and allows for hysteresis-free, strain-rate-independent, and elastic behavior. This robust reinforcement is sustained in warm phosphate-buffered saline. These properties demonstrate the application potential of the developed hydrogel as a soft, elastic, and tough bio-strain sensor that can detect dynamic motions across various deformation speeds and ranges. The findings provide a simple yet effective approach to developing practical hydrogels with a desirable combination of strength/stiffness and toughness, in a fully swollen and equilibrated state.

Recent advances in chitosan-based materials; The synthesis, modifications and biomedical applications

The attention to polymer-based biomaterials, for instance, chitosan and its derivatives, as well as the techniques for using them in numerous scientific domains, is continuously rising. Chitosan is a decomposable naturally occurring polymeric material that is mostly obtained from seafood waste. Because of its special ecofriendly, biocompatible, non- toxic nature as well as antimicrobial properties, chitosan-based materials have received a lot of interest in the field of biomedical applications. The reactivity of chitosan is mainly because of the amino and hydroxyl groups in its composition, which makes it further fascinating for various uses, including biosensing, textile finishing, antimicrobial wound dressing, tissue engineering, bioimaging, gene, DNA and drug delivery and as a coating material for medical implants. This study is an overview of the different types of chitosan-based materials which now a days have been fabricated by applying different techniques and modifications that include etherification, esterification, crosslinking, graft copolymerization and o-acetylation etc. for hydroxyl groups' processes and acetylation, quaternization, Schiff's base reaction, and grafting for amino groups' reactions. Furthermore, this overview summarizes the literature from recent years related to the important applications of chitosan-based materials (i.e., thin films, nanocomposites or nanoparticles, sponges and hydrogels) in different biomedical applications.

Biopolymer-Based Composite Hydrogels Embedding Small Silver Nanoparticles for Advanced Antimicrobial Applications: Experimental and Theoretical Insights

In this work, we report a two-step methodology for the synthesis of small silver nanoparticles embedded into hydrogels based on chitosan (CS) and hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC) biopolymers. This method uses d-glucose as an external green reducing agent and purified water as a solvent, leading to an eco-friendly, cost-effective, and biocompatible process for the synthesis of silver nanocomposite hydrogels. Their characterization comprises ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy, Fourier-transform infrared spectra, differential scanning calorimetry, scanning electron microscopy with energy-dispersive spectroscopy, and transmission electron microscopy assays. Moreover, the structural stability of the hydrogels was investigated through sequential swelling-deswelling cycles. The nanomaterials showed good mechanical properties in terms of their structural stability and revealed prominent antibacterial properties due to the reduced-size particles that promote their use as new advanced antimicrobial agents, an advantage compared to conventional particles in aqueous suspension that lose stability and effectiveness. Finally, theoretical analyses provided insights into the possible interactions, charge transfer, and stabilization process of nanoclusters mediated by the high-electron-density groups belonging to CS and HPMC, revealing their unique structural properties in the preparation of nano-scaled materials.

Preparation of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) membrane blended with acrylamide grafted bentonite for oily water treatment

The current work aims to advance the hydrophilicity, morphology, and antifouling characteristics of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) membranes for oily wastewater separation by incorporating modified bentonite. The surface of bentonite nanoparticles is altered by adopting the "grafting from" method using the surface-initiated atom transfer radical polymerization (SI-ATRP) approach. The PVC-based membrane is first prepared by blending acrylamide grafted bentonite (AAm-g-bentonite). AAm is grafted on bentonite in the presence of 2,2'-Bipyridyl and copper (I) bromide as a catalyst. The modified bentonite nanoparticles are studied using multiple techniques, such as fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA), sedimentation tests, field emission scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM), etc. Flat-sheet PVC-based membrane is prepared by blending AAm-g-bentonite using the nonsolvent induced phase separation (NIPS) technique. Different methods, including FE-SEM, FTIR, sedimentation test, contact angle, porosity, antifouling property, and filtration studies of pure and oily water, are used to characterize and determine the performance of mixed-matrix membranes. Membrane performance is improved in the presence of modified bentonite (i.e., AAm-g-bentonite), with the best result achieved at PVC/AAm-g-ben-8 (i.e., 8 wt % of AAm-g-bentonite). Enhanced pure water flux (293.14 Lm^-2h^-1), permeate flux (123.96 Lm^-2h^-1), and oil rejection >93.2% are obtained by the reduced contact angle (49.1°) and improved porosity (71.22%).

Recent advances of chitosan-based polymers in biomedical applications and environmental protection

Interest in polymer-based biomaterials such as chitosan and its modifications and also the methods of their application in various fields of science is uninterruptedly growing. Owing to unique physicochemical, biological, ecological, physiological properties, such as biocompatibility, biodegradability, stability in the natural environment, non-toxicity, high biological activity, economic affordability, chelating of metal ions, high sorption properties, chitosan is used in various biomedical and industrial processes. The reactivity of the amino and hydroxyl groups in the structure makes it more interesting for diverse applications in drug delivery, tissue engineering, wound healing, regenerative medicine, blood anticoagulation and bone, tendon or blood vessel engineering, dentistry, biotechnology, biosensing, cosmetics, water treatment, agriculture. Taking into account the current situation in the world with COVID-19 and other viruses, chitosan is also active in the form of a vaccine system, it can deliver antibodies to the nasal mucosa and load gene drugs that prevent or disrupt the replication of viral DNA/RNA, and deliver them to infected cells. The presented article is an overview of the nowaday state of the application of chitosan, based on literature of recent years, showing importance of fundamental and applied studies aimed to expand application of chitosan-based polymers in many fields of science.

Anti-Swelling, Robust, and Adhesive Extracellular Matrix-Mimicking Hydrogel Used as Intraoral Dressing

Due to the wet and dynamic environment of the oral cavity, the healing of intraoral wounds, such as tooth extraction wounds, requires stable and firm wound dressings. In clinical practice, cotton balls and gauzes, sponge plugs, or sutures are used to treat extraction wounds, but none of these means can continuously isolate the wound from the intraoral environment and facilitate ideal healing conditions. Herein, inspired by the natural extracellular matrix, a family of wound dressings is developed for intraoral wound repair. Infiltrating a ductile long-chain hydrogel network into a prefabricated, sturdy macromolecular meshwork and in situ crosslinking endowed the composite hydrogel with controllable swelling behaviors and robust mechanical properties. The macromolecular meshwork functioned as the backbone to support the composite and restricts the swelling of the long-chain hydrogel network. In vitro tests verified that this wound dressing can provide durable protection for intraoral wounds against complex irritations. Furthermore, accelerated wound healing occurred when the wound dressing is applied in vivo on a canine tooth extraction model, due to the effective reduction of acute inflammation. These results suggest that this family of bioinspired hydrogels has great potential for application as intraoral wound dressing.

Cytocompatibility of carboxylated multi-wall carbon nanotubes in stem cells from human exfoliated deciduous teeth

Carboxylated multi-wall carbon nanotube (MWCNT-COOH) presents unique properties due to nanoscale dimensions and permits a broad range of applications in different fields, such as bone tissue engineering and regenerative medicine. However, the cytocompatibility of MWCNT-COOH with human stem cells is poorly understood. Thus, studies elucidating how MWCNT-COOH affects human stem cell viability are essential to a safer application of nanotechnologies. Using stem cells from the human exfoliated deciduous teeth model, we have evaluated the effects of MWCNT-COOH on cell viability, oxidative cell stress, and DNA integrity. Results demonstrated that despite the decreased metabolism of mitochondria, MWCNT-COOH had no toxicity against stem cells. Cells maintained viability after MWCNT-COOH exposure. MWCNT-COOH did not alter the superoxide dismutase activity and did not cause genotoxic effects. The present findings are relevant to the potential application of MWCNT-COOH in the tissue engineering and regenerative medicine fields.

Single-Ion Conducting Double-Network Hydrogel Electrolytes for Long Cycling Zinc-Ion Batteries

As one of the promising alternatives of lithium-ion batteries, zinc-ion batteries (ZIBs) have received growing interest from researchers due to their good safety, eco-friendliness, and low cost. Nevertheless, aqueous ZIBs are still a step away from practical applications due to the nonuniform deposition of Zn and parasitic side reactions, which cause capacity fading and even short circuit. To tackle these problems, here we introduce a single-Zn-ion conducting hydrogel electrolyte (SIHE), P(ICZn-AAm), synthesized with iota carrageenan (IC) and acrylamide (AAm). The SIHE manifests single Zn²⁺ conductivity via the abundant sulfates fixed on the IC polymer backbone, delivering a high Zn²⁺ transference number of 0.93. It also exhibits outstanding ionic conductivity of 2.15 × 10^-3 S cm^-1 at room temperature. The enhanced compatibility at the electrode-electrolyte interface was verified by the stable Zn striping/plating performance along with a homogenous and smooth Zn deposition layer. It is also found that the passivation of the Zn anode can be effectively prohibited due to the lack of free anions in the electrolyte. The practical performance of the SIHE is further investigated with Zn-V₂O₅ batteries, which showed a stable capacity of 271.6 mA h g^-1 over 150 cycles at 2 C and 127.5 mA h g^-1 over 500 cycles at 5 C.

Curcumin-loaded niosomes downregulate mRNA expression of pro-inflammatory markers involved in asthma: an in vitro study

Aim: In this study, curcumin was encapsulated in niosomes (Nio-Curc) to increase its effectiveness for the treatment of asthma. Materials & methods: The formulation underwent various physicochemical characterization experiments, an in vitro release study, molecular simulations and was evaluated for in vitro anti-inflammatory activity. Results: Results showed that Nio-Curc had a mean particle size of 284.93 ± 14.27 nm, zeta potential of -46.93 and encapsulation efficacy of 99.62%, which demonstrates optimized physicochemical characteristics. Curcumin release in vitro could be sustained for up to 24 h. Additionally, Nio-Curc effectively reduced mRNA transcript expression of pro-inflammatory markers; IL-6, IL-8, IL-1β and TNF-α in immortalized human airway basal cell line (BCi-NS1.1). Conclusion: In this study, we have demonstrated that Nio-Curc mitigated the mRNA expression of pro-inflammatory markers in an in vitro study, which could be applied to treatment of asthma with further studies.

Synthetic polymer hydrogels as potential tissue phantoms in radiation therapy and dosimetry

The efficacy of synthetic polymers as hydrogel phantoms for radiation therapy and dosimetry has been investigated for photon and charged particle (electron, proton and alpha particle) interactions. Tissue equivalence has been studied in terms of photon mass energy-absorption coefficients, KERMA (kinetic energy released per unit mass), equivalent atomic number and energy absorption build-up factors, relative to human tissues (skin, soft tissue, cortical bone and skeletal muscle), in the energy range 0.015-15 MeV. For charged particle interactions, ratio of effective atomic number is examined for tissue-equivalence in the energy region of 10 keV-1 GeV. Well established theoretical formulations are used for computation of photon mass-energy absorption effective atomic number, electron density and KERMA. Five-parameter geometric progression (G-P) fitting approximation is used to compute the values of energy absorption build-up factors. Effective atomic number for charged particle interaction is determined using logarithmic interpolation method. Using the analytical methodology, it has been revealed that all the selected synthetic polymers have good tissue-equivalence relative to all tissue except cortical bone. In particular, polyglycolic acid (PGA) and poly-lactic-co-glycolic acid (PLGA) prove to be best substitute material for photon interactions. On the other hand, % difference between effective atomic number for charged particle relative to human tissues is found least for polyethylene glycol (PEG) demonstrating adequate tissue-equivalence. Therefore, the present study is expected to be useful to choose most appropriate phantom material for radiation therapy.

Improved antioxidant, antimicrobial and anticancer activity of naringenin on conjugation with pectin

The purpose of the present study was to improve the aqueous solubility of naringenin by conjugating with water-soluble polysaccharide carrier, pectin. The pectin-naringenin conjugate was synthesized employing dicyclohexylcarbodiimide and dimethylaminopyridine. The conjugation was confirmed by various physicochemical characterizations. The results of differential scanning calorimetry, X-ray diffraction and morphological analyses revealed semi-crystalline nature of the conjugate. The chromatographic analysis showed 37.069 µg naringenin/mg of conjugate. The conjugate was determined to have molecular weight of 6.22 × 10⁴ kDa by static light scattering. In silico molecular mechanistic simulations performed for pectin and naringenin revealed the energetic and geometrical stability within the polysaccharide-polyphenol conjugate. The critical aggregation concentration was in the range of 44.67-56.23 μg/mL as determined by dynamic light scattering and fluorescence spectroscopy. On in vitro release, 99.4% (pH 1.2) and 57.62% (pH 7.4) of naringenin were found to be released over a period of 30 h and 48 h, respectively. Further, the release of naringenin followed Higuchi's square-root kinetics with diffusion as the possible release mechanism. A comparative evaluation for antioxidant activity revealed a significantly higher radical scavenging activity of conjugate over the naringenin. Further, the conjugate exhibited significantly higher antimicrobial action against Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus epidermidis, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa while a comparable antimicrobial activity was observed against Escherichia coli and Bacillus subtilis. The cytotoxicity studies of the synthesized conjugate showed anti-cancer activity against NIH: OVCAR-5 cells. In conclusion, the pectin-naringenin conjugate presented hydrocolloidal properties with improved therapeutic efficacy and delivery over the native polyphenol.

Spectrally Selective Smart Window with High Near-Infrared Light Shielding and Controllable Visible Light Transmittance

Smart windows with high near-infrared (NIR) light shielding and controllable visible light transmittance are highly sought after for cooling energy saving in buildings. Herein, we present a rationally designed spectrally selective smart window which is capable of shielding 96.2% of the NIR irradiation from 800 to 2500 nm and at the same time permitting acceptable visible light (78.2% before and 45.3% after its optical switching) for indoor daylighting. The smart window synergistically integrates the highly selective and effective NIR absorption based photothermal conversion of cesium tungsten bronze (Cs _xWO₃) with the transparent thermoresponsive poly( N-isopropyl acrylamide) (PNIPAM) microgel-polyacrylamide (PAM) hydrogel. Optical switching of the smart window is a direct result of the phase transition of PAM-PNIPAM hydrogel, which in turn is induced by the photothermal effect of Cs _xWO₃ under sunlight irradiation. The smart window exhibits fast optical switching, shows long-term operational stability, and can be made highly flexible. Under the experimental conditions in this work, the indoor temperature with the smart window is ∼21 °C lower than that with a regular single-layered glass window under one sun irradiation. The smart window design in this work is meaningful for further development of effective smart windows for energy saving in the build environment.

In Vitro and In Silico Analyses of Nicotine Release from a Gelisphere-Loaded Compressed Polymeric Matrix for Potential Parkinson's Disease Interventions

This study aimed to develop a prolonged-release device for the potential site-specific delivery of a neuroprotective agent (nicotine). The device was formulated as a novel reinforced crosslinked composite polymeric system with the potential for intrastriatal implantation in Parkinson's disease interventions. Polymers with biocompatible and bioerodible characteristics were selected to incorporate nicotine within electrolyte-crosslinked alginate-hydroxyethylcellulose gelispheres compressed within a release rate-modulating external polymeric matrix, comprising either hydroxypropylmethylcellulose (HPMC), polyethylene oxide (PEO), or poly(lactic-co-glycolic) acid (PLGA) to prolong nicotine release. The degradation and erosion studies showed that the produced device had desirable robustness with the essential attributes for entrapping drug molecules and retarding their release. Zero-order drug release was observed over 50 days from the device comprising PLGA as the external matrix. Furthermore, the alginate-nicotine interaction, the effects of crosslinking on the alginate-hydroxyethycellulose (HEC) blend, and the effects of blending PLGA, HPMC, and PEO on device performance were mechanistically elucidated using molecular modelling simulations of the 3D structure of the respective molecular complexes to predict the molecular interactions and possible geometrical orientation of the polymer morphologies affecting the geometrical preferences. The compressed polymeric matrices successfully retarded the release of nicotine over several days. PLGA matrices offered minimal rates of matrix degradation and successfully retarded nicotine release, leading to the achieved zero-order release for 50 days following exposure to simulated cerebrospinal fluid (CSF).

Assessing the potential of liposomes loaded with curcumin as a therapeutic intervention in asthma

Curcumin a component of turmeric, which is derived from Curcuma longa is used as a colouring agent and as a dietary spice for centuries. Extensive studies have been done on the anti-inflammatory activity of curcumin along with its molecular mechanism involving different signalling pathways. However, the physicochemical and biological properties such as poor solubility and rapid metabolism of curcumin have led to low bioavailability and hence limits its application. Current therapies for asthma such as bronchodilators and inhaled corticosteroids (ICS) are aimed at controlling disease symptoms and prevent asthma exacerbation. However, this approach requires lifetime therapy and is associated with a constellation of side effects. This creates a clear unmet medical need and there is an urgent demand for new and more-effective treatments. The present study is aimed to formulate liposomes containing curcumin and evaluate for its anti-inflammatory effects on lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced inflammation on BCi-NS1.1 cell line. Curcumin and salbutamol liposomes were formulated using lipid hydration method. The prepared liposomes were characterized in terms of particle size, zeta potential, encapsulation efficiency and in-vitro release profile. The liposomes were tested on BCI-NS1.1 cell line to evaluate its anti-inflammatory properties. The various pro-inflammatory markers studied were Interleukin-6 (IL-6), Interleukin-8 (IL-8), Interleukin-1β (IL-1β) and Tumour Necrosis Factor-a (TNF-a). Additionally, molecular mechanics simulations were used to elucidate the positioning, energy minimization, and aqueous dispersion of the liposomal architecture involving lecithin and curcumin. The prepared curcumin formulation showed an average size and zeta potential of 271.3 ± 3.06 nm and -61.0 mV, respectively. The drug encapsulation efficiency of liposomal curcumin is 81.1%. Both curcumin-loaded liposomes formulation (1 μg/mL, 5 μg/mL) resulted in significant (p < 0.05) reduction in the level of pro-inflammatory marker expression such as IL-6, IL-8, IL-1β and TNF-a compared to positive control group. Liposomal curcumin with the dose of 1 μg/mL reduced the inflammatory markers more effectively compared to that of 5 μg/mL. Liposomal curcumin could be a promising intervention for asthma therapy showing their efficacy in suppressing the important pro-inflammatory markers involved in the pathogenesis of asthma.

3D Printed, PVA⁻PAA Hydrogel Loaded-Polycaprolactone Scaffold for the Delivery of Hydrophilic In-Situ Formed Sodium Indomethacin

3D printed polycaprolactone (PCL)-blended scaffolds have been designed, prepared, and evaluated in vitro in this study prior to the incorporation of a polyvinyl alcohol–polyacrylic acid (PVA–PAA) hydrogel for the delivery of in situ-formed sodium indomethacin. The prepared PCL–PVA–PAA scaffold is proposed as a potential structural support system for load-bearing tissue damage where inflammation is prevalent. Uniaxial strain testing of the PCL-blended scaffolds were undertaken to determine the scaffold’s resistance to strain in addition to its thermal, structural, and porosimetric properties. The viscoelastic properties of the incorporated PVA–PAA hydrogel has also been determined, as well as the drug release profile of the PCL–PVA–PAA scaffold. Results of these analyses noted the structural strength, thermal stability, and porosimetric properties of the scaffold, as well as the ability of the PCL–PVA–PAA scaffold to deliver sodium indomethacin in simulated physiological conditions of pH and temperature. The results of this study therefore highlight the successful design, fabrication, and in vitro evaluation of a 3D printed polymeric strain-resistant supportive platform for the delivery of sodium indomethacin.

Chitosan-titanium oxide fibers supported zero-valent nanoparticles: Highly efficient and easily retrievable catalyst for the removal of organic pollutants

Different chitosan-titanium oxide (CS-TiO₂-x, with x = TiO₂ loadings of 1, 5, 10,15 and 20 wt%) nanocomposite fibers were prepared and kept separately in each salt solution of CuSO₄, CoNO₃, AgNO₃ and NiSO₄ to adsorb Cu²⁺, Co²⁺, Ag⁺, and Ni⁺ ions, respectively. The metal ions loaded onto CS-TiO₂ fibers were reduced to their respective zero-valent metal nanoparticles (ZV-MNPs) like Cu⁰, Co⁰, Ag⁰ and Ni⁰ by treating with NaBH₄. The CS-TiO₂ fibers templated with various ZV-MNPs were characterized and investigated for their catalytic efficiency. Among all prepared ZV-MNPs, Cu⁰ nanoparticles templated on CS-TiO₂-15 fibers exhibited high catalytic efficiency for the reduction of dyes (methyl orange (MO), congo red (CR), methylene blue (MB) and acridine orange (AO)) and nitrophenols (4-nitrohphenol (4-NP), 2-nitrophenol (2-NP), 3-nitrophenol (3-NP) and 2,6-dinitrophenol (2,6-DNP)). Besides the good catalytic activities of Cu/CS-TiO₂-15 fibers, it could be easily recovered by simply pulling the fiber from the reaction medium.

Chitosan coated cotton cloth supported zero-valent nanoparticles: Simple but economically viable, efficient and easily retrievable catalysts

A simple, economically viable and fast method has been utilized for the preparation of highly active metal nanoparticles (MNPs) in coating layer of chitosan (CH) over cellulose microfibers of cotton cloth (CC). 2 wt% of CH solution was used for the coating of CC strips (CC-CH), and were kept in aqueous solutions of metal salts to adsorb metal ions. The CC-CH templated with metal ions were then treated with aqueous solution of NaBH₄ to reduce the metal ions into zero-valent metal nanoparticles (M⁰). The CC-CH strips loaded with M⁰ were characterized by XRD, XPS, ATR-FTIR, FE-SEM and TGA, which indicates the successful synthesis of MNPs by this method. The M⁰/CC-CH strips were used as an efficient catalyst for the model reduction reaction of nitrophenol and toxic organic dyes. Among all the prepaped samples, Fe/CC-CH showed good catalytic activity for 4-NP and Rh-B dye reduction in the presence of NaBH₄ with rate constants of 0.2937 min^-1 and 0.3804 min^-1, respectively. Moreover Fe/CC-CH has good catalytic reduction ability for MO and MB having rate constants equal to 0.1698 and 0.2802 min^-1, respectively. Beside the good catalytic ability, it could be easily recoverable as compared to other available techniques. The recovery was completed by simply pulling the strip from the reaction matrix after completion of the reaction and can be used several times.

Bactericidal and catalytic performance of green nanocomposite based-on chitosan/carbon black fiber supported monometallic and bimetallic nanoparticles

Nanoparticles were synthesized on the surface of green nanocomposite based on carbon black dispersed in chitosan (CB-CS) fibres. The nanoparticles were monometallic Co, Ag and Cu and bimetallic Co + Cu and Co + Ag. The CB-CS fibres were prepared and introduced into separate metal salt solutions containing Co²⁺, Ag⁺ and Cu²⁺ and mixed Co²⁺+Cu²⁺ and Co²⁺+Ag⁺ ions. The metal ions immobilized on the surface of CB-CS were reduced using sodium borohydride (NaBH₄) as reducing agent to synthesize the corresponding zero-valent metal nanoparticles-loaded CB-CS fibres. All the nanoparticles-loaded CB-CS samples were characterized using field emission-scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction techniques. When tested as catalysts, the nanoparticles-loaded CB-CS showed excellent catalytic ability for the reduction of toxic and environmentally unwanted pollutants of para-nitrophenol, congo red and methyl orange dyes. Afterwards, the antimicrobial activities of virgin and metal-loaded CB-CS fibres were tested and the metal-loaded CB-CS fibres were found to be effective against Escherichia coli. In addition, the catalyst can be recovered easily by simply removing the fibres from the reaction mixture and can be recycled several times while maintaining high catalytic efficiency.

Improved metabolic stability and therapeutic efficacy of a novel molecular gemcitabine phospholipid complex

The aim of the present research is to increase lipid solubility, metabolic stability and therapeutic efficacy of water soluble gemcitabine (GEM) via phospholipid complex (PC) formation. A novel phospholipid complex of GEM was successfully prepared and optimized. Physical interaction of GEM with phospholipid was evaluated by DSC, FT-IR, ¹H NMR, ³¹P-NMR and P-XRD. SEM images of GEM-PC showed rough structure and TEM images of diluted aqueous dispersion of GEM-PC showed micellar structure. In silico study also revealed the significant interaction between drug and phospholipid. GEM-PC demonstrated sustained drug release pattern and high plasma stability (∼2.2 fold) in vitro as compared to GEM. Increased in vitro cytotoxicity and apoptosis were observed with GEM-PC, when incubated with human pancreas adenocarcinoma cell lines. In vivo pharmacokinetics showed the almost 2 fold increase in AUC_0-∞ (area under curve) with phospholipid complex (8983.26ngh/ml) as compared with GEM (4371.18ngh/ml) and GEMITA (4689.29ngh/ml). Toxicity studies signify the safety of GEM-PC over GEMITA. Pharmacodynamics studies in pancreatic tumor model further revealed higher efficacy of GEM-PC than GEMITA. These findings suggested the higher potential of phospholipid based technology for the enhancement of metabolic stability and therapeutic efficacy of GEM.

Design of an Inflammation-Sensitive Polyelectrolyte-Based Topical Drug Delivery System for Arthritis

The most successful treatment strategy for arthritis is intra-articular injections that are costly and have reduced patient compliance. The purpose of the current study was to develop an inflammation-sensitive system for topical drug administration. Multi-macromolecular alginate-hyaluronic acid-chitosan (A-H-C) polyelectrolyte complex nanoparticles, loaded with indomethacin were developed employing pre-gel and post-gel techniques in the presence of dodecyl-L-pyroglutamate (DLP). In addition to in vitro studies, in silico simulations were performed to affirm and associate the molecular interactions inherent to the formulation of core all-natural multi-component biopolymeric architectures composed of an anionic (alginate), a cationic (chitosan), and an amphi-ionic polyelectrolytic (hyaluronic acid) macromolecule. The results demonstrated that DLP significantly influenced the size of the synthesized nanoparticles. Drug-content analysis revealed higher encapsulation efficiency (77.3%) in the presence of DLP, irrespective of the techniques used. Moreover, in vitro drug release studies showed that indomethacin release from the nanosystem was significantly improved (98%) in Fenton's reagent. Drug permeation across a cellulose membrane using a Franz diffusion cell system showed an initial surge flux (0.125 mg/cm(-2)/h), followed by sustained release of indomethacin for the post-gel nanoparticles revealing its effective skin permeation efficiency. In conclusion, the study presents novel nanoparticles which could effectively encapsulate and deliver hydrophobic drugs to the target site, particularly for arthritis.

Fabrication of polymeric biomaterials: a strategy for tissue engineering and medical devices

Fabrication of biomaterials scaffolds using various methods and techniques is discussed, utilising biocompatible, biodegradable and stimuli-responsive polymers and their composites. This review covers the lithography and printing techniques, self-organisation and self-assembly methods for 3D structural scaffolds generation, and smart hydrogels, for tissue regeneration and medical devices.

Evaluation of the impacts of formulation variables and excipients on the drug release dynamics of a polyamide 6,10-based monolithic matrix using mathematical tools

Drug release from hydrophilic matrices is regulated mainly by polymeric erosion, disentanglement, dissolution, swelling front movement, drug dissolution and diffusion through the polymeric matrix. These processes depend upon the interaction between the dissolution media, polymeric matrix and drug molecules, which can be significantly influenced by formulation variables and excipients. This study utilized mathematical parameters to evaluate the impacts of selected formulation variables and various excipients on the release performance of hydrophilic polyamide 6,10 (PA 6,10) monolithic matrix. Amitriptyline HCl and theophylline were employed as the high and low solubility model drugs, respectively. The incorporation of different excipient concentrations and changes in formulation components influenced the drug release dynamics as evidenced by computed mathematical quantities (t x%, MDT x%, f 1, f 2, k 1, k 2, and К F). The effects of excipients on drug release from the PA 6,10 monolithic matrix was further elucidated using static lattice atomistic simulations wherein the component energy refinements corroborates the in vitro and in silico experimental data. Consequently, the feasibility of modulating release kinetics of drug molecules from the novel PA 6,10 monolithic matrix was well suggested.
