Abstract
BACKGROUND Mitochondrial proteins assume a pivotal role in the onset and progression of diverse diseases. Nonetheless, the causal interconnections with sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) demand meticulous exploration. Mendelian randomization analysis is a method used in observational epidemiological studies to predict the relationship between exposure factors and outcomes using genetic variants as instrumental variables. In this study, we applied this analytical approach to two distinct samples to predict the causal impact of mitochondrial proteins on SNHL. METHODS Two-sample Mendelian randomization analyses were executed to scrutinize the predicted associations between 63 mitochondrial proteins (nuclear-encoded) and SNHL, utilizing summary statistics derived from genome-wide association studies. Assessments of pleiotropy and heterogeneity were carried out to gauge the robustness of the obtained findings. RESULTS Four mitochondrial proteins exhibited a suggestive causal relationship with the susceptibility to SNHL. Dihydrolipoamide dehydrogenase (DLD; OR = 0.9706, 95% CI = 0.9382-0.9953, p = 0.0230) was linked to a diminished risk of SNHL. Conversely, elevated levels of mitochondrial ribosomal protein L34 (MRPL34; OR = 1.0458, 95% CI = 1.0029-1.0906, p = 0.0362), single-pass membrane protein with aspartate-rich tail 1 (SMDT1; OR = 1.0619, 95% CI = 1.0142-1.1119, p = 0.0104), and superoxide dismutase 2 (SOD2; OR = 1.0323, 95% CI = 1.0020-1.0634, p = 0.0364) were associated with an elevated risk of SNHL. CONCLUSION This research utilized Mendelian randomization analysis to predict the relationship between mitochondrial proteins and SNHL. It provides a potential viewpoint on the etiology and diagnosis.

Abstract
Background Aminoglycosides, such as Streptomycin, are cheap, potent antibiotics widely used Sub-Saharan Africa. However, aminoglycosides are the commonest cause of ototoxicity. The limited prospective epidemiological studies on aminoglycoside ototoxicity from Sub-Saharan Africa motivated this study to provide epidemiological information on Streptomycin-induced ototoxicity, identify risk factors and predictors of ototoxicity. Method A longitudinal study of 153 adults receiving Streptomycin-based anti-tuberculous drugs was done. All participants underwent extended frequency audiometry and had normal hearing thresholds at baseline. Hearing thresholds were assessed weekly for 2 months, then monthly for the subsequent 6 months. Ototoxicity was determined using the ASHA criteria. Descriptive statistics were used to analyze socio-demographic variables. Ototoxicity incidence rate was calculated, and Kaplan-Meier estimate used to determine cumulative probability of ototoxicity. Chi-square test was done to determine parameters associated with ototoxicity and Cox regression models were used to choose the predictors of ototoxicity. Results Age of participants was 41.43 ± 12.66 years, with a male-to-female ratio of 1:0.6. Ototoxicity was found in 34.6% of the participants, giving an incidence of 17.26 per 1,000-person-week. The mean onset time to ototoxicity was 28.0 ± 0.47 weeks. By 28th week, risk of developing ototoxicity for respondents below 40 years of age was 0.29, and for those above 40 years was 0.77. At the end of the follow-up period, the overall probability of developing ototoxicity in the study population was 0.74. A significant difference in onset of ototoxicity was found between the age groups: the longest onset was seen in <40 years, followed by 40-49 years, and shortest onset in ≥50 years. Hazard of ototoxicity was significantly higher in participants aged ≥50 years compared to participants aged ≤40 years (HR = 3.76, 95% CI = 1.84-7.65). The probability of ototoxicity at 40 g, 60 g and 80 g cumulative dose of Streptomycin was 0.08, 0.43 and 2.34, respectively. Age and cumulative dose were significant predictors of ototoxicity. Conclusion The mean onset time to Streptomycin-induced ototoxicity was 28 weeks after commencement of therapy. Age and cumulative dose can reliably predict the onset of Streptomycin-induced ototoxicity. Medium to long term monitoring of hearing is advised for patients on aminoglycoside therapy.

OBJECTIVE Age-related hearing loss (ARHL) is a prevalent but often underdiagnosed and undertreated condition among individuals aged 50 and above. It is associated with various sociodemographic factors and health risks including dementia, depression, cardiovascular disease, and falls. While the causes of ARHL and its downstream effects are well defined, there is a lack of priority placed by clinicians as well as guidance regarding the identification, education, and management of this condition. PURPOSE The purpose of this clinical practice guideline is to identify quality improvement opportunities and provide clinicians trustworthy, evidence-based recommendations regarding the identification and management of ARHL. These opportunities are communicated through clear actionable statements with an explanation of the support in the literature, the evaluation of the quality of the evidence, and recommendations on implementation. The target patients for the guideline are any individuals aged 50 years and older. The target audience is all clinicians in all care settings. This guideline is intended to focus on evidence-based quality improvement opportunities judged most important by the Guideline Development Group (GDG). It is not intended to be a comprehensive, general guide regarding the management of ARHL. The statements in this guideline are not intended to limit or restrict care provided by clinicians based on their experience and assessment of individual patients. ACTION STATEMENTS The GDG made strong recommendations for the following key action statements (KASs): (KAS 4) If screening suggests hearing loss, clinicians should obtain or refer to a clinician who can obtain an audiogram. (KAS 8) Clinicians should offer, or refer to a clinician who can offer, appropriately fit amplification to patients with ARHL. (KAS 9) Clinicians should refer patients for an evaluation of cochlear implantation candidacy when patients have appropriately fit amplification and persistent hearing difficulty with poor speech understanding. The GDG made recommendations for the following KASs: (KAS 1) Clinicians should screen patients aged 50 years and older for hearing loss at the time of a health care encounter. (KAS 2) If screening suggests hearing loss, clinicians should examine the ear canal and tympanic membrane with otoscopy or refer to a clinician who can examine the ears for cerumen impaction, infection, or other abnormalities. (KAS 3) If screening suggests hearing loss, clinicians should identify sociodemographic factors and patient preferences that influence access to and utilization of hearing health care. Abstract
BACKGROUND Intratympanic steroids (ITS) in treating sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSNHL) have become more widespread. AIM This study investigates whether ITS treatment provides additional benefits when combined with systemic steroids (SS) in patients with severe and profound SSNHL. MATERIALS AND METHODS Patients diagnosed with severe and profound SSNHL were divided into two groups: SS group and SS combined with ITS group. Pure-tone audiometry was performed before and three months after treatment completion. The pure-tone average (PTA), frequency-specific hearing gains, and average values were compared between the groups. RESULTS The study included 57 patients (27 SS, 30 ITS), with a mean age of 50.09 ± 15.56. Before treatment: SS PTA 84.40 ± 15 dB HL, ITS 87.50 ± 9.38 dB HL (p = 0.36). After treatment: SS 62.2 ± 23.13 dB HL, ITS 65.17 ± 12.19 dB HL (p = 0.55). Average hearing gain: SS 22.19 ± 13.81 dB HL, ITS 22.33 ± 12.24 dB HL (p = 0.96). Frequency-specific gains were similar (p > 0.05). SS group: 12 slight improvement, 10 no improvement, 3 partial, 2 complete recovery. ITS group: 23 slight improvement, 6 no improvement, 1 partial. CONCLUSION In our study, combining ITS with SS treatment did not provide additional benefits in treating severe and profound SSNHL.

Abstract
There is considerable interest in whether sensory deficiency is associated with the development of Alzheimer's disease (AD). Notably, the relationship between hearing impairment and AD is of high relevance but still poorly understood. In this study, we found early-onset hearing loss in two AD mouse models, 3xTgAD and 3xTgAD/Polβ+/-. The 3xTgAD/Polβ+/- mouse is DNA repair deficient and has more humanized AD features than the 3xTgAD. Both AD mouse models showed increased auditory brainstem response (ABR) thresholds between 16 and 32 kHz at 4 weeks of age, much earlier than any AD cognitive and behavioral changes. The ABR thresholds were significantly higher in 3xTgAD/Polβ+/- mice than in 3xTgAD mice at 16 kHz, and distortion product otoacoustic emission signals were reduced, indicating that DNA damage may be a factor underlying early hearing impairment in AD. Poly ADP-ribosylation and protein expression levels of DNA damage markers increased significantly in the cochlea of the AD mice but not in the adjacent auditory cortex. Phosphoglycerate mutase 2 levels and the number of synaptic ribbons in the presynaptic zones of inner hair cells were decreased in the cochlea of the AD mice. Furthermore, the activity of sirtuin 3 was downregulated in the cochlea of these mice, indicative of impaired mitochondrial function. Taken together, these findings provide new insights into potential mechanisms for hearing dysfunction in AD and suggest that DNA damage in the cochlea might contribute to the development of early hearing loss in AD.

Abstract
Background: Anatomical differences between sexes in the vestibular system have been reported. It has also been demonstrated that there is a sex difference in balance control while standing on vestibular-demanding tasks. In 2024, NASA expects to send the first female to the Moon. Therefore, to extend the current knowledge, this study attempted to examine whether different sexes respond differently to vestibular-disrupted and vestibular-demanding environments. Method: A total of fifteen males and fifteen females participated in this study. The vestibular function was quantified through different SOT conditions (SOT1: baseline; SOT5: vestibular demanding by standing with blindfolded and sway reference surface). The vestibular stimulation (VS) was applied either unilaterally or bilaterally to vestibular system to induce the sensory-conflicted and challenging tasks. Thus, a total of 6 conditions (2 SOT conditions X 3 VSs: no-VS, unilateral VS, and bilateral VS) were randomly given to these participants. Three approaches can be quantified the balance control: 1) the performance ratio (PR) of center of gravity trajectories (CoG), 2) the sample entropy measure (SampEn) of CoG, and 3) the total traveling distance of CoG. A mixed three-way repeated ANOVA measure was used to determine the interaction among the sex effect, the effect of SOT, and the effect of VS on balance control. Results: A significant sex effect on balance control was found in the PR of CoG in the anterior-posterior (AP) direction (p = 0.026) and in the SampEn of CoG in both AP and medial-lateral (ML) directions (p = 0.025, p < 0.001, respectively). Also, a significant interaction among the sex effect, the effect of SOT, and the effect of VS on balance control was observed in PR of CoG in the ML direction (p < 0.001), SampEn of CoG in the AP and ML directions (p = 0.002, p < 0.001, respectively), and a traveling distance in AP direction (p = 0.041). Conclusion: The findings in the present study clearly revealed the necessity to take sex effect into consideration while standing in vestibular-perturbed or/and vestibular demanding tasks. Also, the results in the present study could be a fundamental reference for future sensorimotor training.

Abstract
AIM Although sensory impairments are common conditions among older people, research often fails to consider the role of sex. We examined sex differences in vision impairment and hearing impairment across age and European regions. METHODS We conducted a cross-sectional study based on a pooled sample of 65,656 females and 54,881 males aged 50 years and older participating in the Survey of Health, Ageing and Retirement in Europe (SHARE) from 2004-2020. Logistic regression models with robust standard errors providing odds ratios (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) were used to examine associations. RESULTS European females had generally higher odds of vision impairment (OR 1.16, 95% CI 1.12-1.21) but lower odds of hearing impairment than European males (OR 0.70, 95% CI 0.67-0.73). The female disadvantage in vision increased with advancing age, whereas the female advantage in hearing decreased. No overall sex difference in vision was found in northern Europe, but females had more vision impairments than males in southern (OR 1.23, 95% CI 1.14-1.32), western (OR 1.14, 95% CI 1.08-1.21) and eastern (OR 1.10, 95% CI 1.02-1.20) Europe. Females were healthier than males in terms of hearing in all regions, with the largest female advantage in northern Europe (OR 0.58, 95% CI 0.53-0.64). CONCLUSION Our findings demonstrate an overall consistent pattern of sex differences in sensory impairments across Europe showing an increasing female disadvantage in vision and a decreasing female advantage in hearing with advancing age.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES This study aimed to analyze the role of estrogen in noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) and uncover underlying mechanisms. METHODS An ovariectomized Sprague-Dawley rat model (OVX) was constructed to investigate the hearing threshold and auditory latency before and after noise exposure using the auditory brainstem response (ABR) test. The morphological changes were assessed using immunofluorescence, scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy. Proteomics and bioinformatics were used to analyze the mechanism. The findings were further verified through western blot and Luminex liquid suspension chip technology. RESULTS After noise exposure, OVX rats exhibited substantially elevated hearing thresholds. A conspicuous delay in ABR wave I latency was observed, alongside increased loss of outer hair cells, severe collapse of stereocilia and pronounced deformation of the epidermal plate. Accordingly, OVX rats with estrogen supplementation exhibited tolerance to NIHL. Additionally, a remarkable upregulation of the thrombospondin 1 (Tsp1)-CD47 axis in OVX rats was discovered and verified. CONCLUSIONS OVX rats were more susceptible to NIHL, and the protective effect of estrogen was achieved through regulation of the Tsp1-CD47 axis. This study presents a novel mechanism through which estrogen regulates NIHL and offers a potential intervention strategy for the clinical treatment of NIHL.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The overall objective in the study was to compare self-reported hearing based on a single question ("how good would you currently rate your hearing?") to measure hearing loss determined by audiometry in a cohort of adolescents. Prevalence of audiometrically measured hearing loss and frequencies of self-reported poor hearing as well as factors that have an impact on self-reported hearing were examined. DESIGN Baseline and 5-year follow-up data of the Ohrkan study were used. Participants filled in a questionnaire and underwent audiometric measurements. STUDY SAMPLE Data from 979 adolescents were analysed. Participants were 54.7% female and aged between 13 and 18 years at baseline and 17-21 years at 5-yr follow-up. RESULTS The single question on self-reported hearing ability achieved a sensitivity of 41.9% and a positive predictive value of 7.1% at baseline. For the 5-yr follow-up, sensitivity was 40.0%, positive predictive value was 13.9%. Factors influencing self-reported poor hearing were gender, tinnitus, "muffled" ears after exposure to loud noise (e.g. after a concert) and low-frequency hearing loss. CONCLUSIONS The single question about hearing ability used in the Ohrkan study is not sufficient to replace audiometry to detect hearing loss as defined in the study in adolescents.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study aims to explore the association between coffee consumption and the prevalence of hearing loss in American adults based on a national population-based survey. DESIGN Cross-sectional analysis of reported audiometric status and coffee intake from the 2003-2006 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). Multivariate logistic regression, forest plots and restricted cubic spline (RCS) analyses were used to explore the associations and dose-response relationships between coffee consumption frequency and hearing loss. SETTING The USA. PARTICIPANT This study included 1894 individuals aged ≥ 20 from the 2003-2006 NHANES. RESULTS In this study, the prevalence of speech-frequency hearing loss (SFHL) and high-frequency hearing loss (HFHL) among the participants was 35·90 % and 51·54 %, respectively. Compared with those who no consumed coffee, non-Hispanic White who consumed ≥ 4 cups/d had higher prevalence of SFHL (OR: 1·87; 95 % CI: 1·003. 3·47). And a positive trend of coffee consumption frequency with the prevalence of HFHL was found (Ptrend = 0·001). This association of HFHL was similar for participants aged 20-64 (Ptrend = 0·001), non-Hispanic White (Ptrend = 0·002), non-noise exposure participants (Ptrend = 0·03) and noise-exposed participants (Ptrend = 0·003). The forest plots analysis found that the association between 1 cup-increment of daily coffee consumption and the prevalence of HFHL was statistically significant in males. RCS model supported a positive linear association of coffee consumption with SFHL (P for overall association = 0·02, P for nonlinearity = 0·48) and a positive non-linear association of coffee consumption with HFHL (P for overall association = 0·001, P for nonlinearity = 0·001). CONCLUSION Our findings suggested that coffee consumption was associated with higher prevalence of hearing loss. Further cohort studies in larger population are needed to investigate these findings.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Presbycusis with tinnitus has a significant impact on the quality of life of elderly patients, becoming a serious socioeconomic problem. OBJECTIVES We conducted an 11-year cross-sectional analysis of the audiometry results of elderly patients with tinnitus from 2011 to 2021. METHODS 9642 patients aged 60 and over were divided into three groups: young-old (YO) (60-74), old-old (OO) (75-89), and longevous (LON) (90 and over). Pure-tone audiometry results of all patients were analyzed. RESULTS Among 9642 patients, the cases of female with tinnitus were more than male in all years. The hearing curve showed a typical age-related decline. Hearing level of air conduction in female declined significantly at low frequencies while that of male was worse at high frequencies in YO and OO groups. Compared with right, left hearing level of air conduction was significantly decreased at all frequencies except 0.125 kHz. CONCLUSIONS When the chief complaint was tinnitus, women were likely to experience more distress than men. However, men suffered from more hearing loss than women, at least in high frequencies. The influence weight of presbycusis and tinnitus on the auditory cortices might be a possible reason for the lateral distinction of hearing loss at different ages.

Abstract
Objective This study aims to determine whether the risks of cardiocerebrovascular disease are relevant to sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) based on a national database. Methods A total of 1,321 participants aged from 18 to 69 with complete data including medical history and audiometry from the NHANES database (2015-2018) were analyzed. All included participants had available hearing data and the average thresholds of the hearing data were measured and calculated as low-frequency pure-tone average (LFPTA; 500, 1,000, and 2,000 Hz) and high-frequency pure-tone average (HFPTA; 3,000, 4,000, 6,000, and 8,000 kHz). SNHL was defined as an average pure tone of more than or equal to 20 dB in at least one better ear. Multivariable models to assess the association between cardiocerebrovascular risks and SNHL were used in this study. Results The prevalence of stroke was 1.6% in individuals with SNHL and 0.4% in individuals without SNHL (p = 0.023). A higher cardiovascular risk score was observed in SNHL patients compared to participants without SNHL (1.58 vs. 0.90, p < 0.001). Stroke was associated with a 3.67-fold increase in the risk of SNHL (95% CI: 1.12-12.00, p = 0.032) in univariable logistic regression, and the association (OR = 4.22, 95%CI = 1.28-13.93, p = 0.020) remained significant after adjusting for several covariates. Multivariable logistic regression models indicated a positive correlation between cardiovascular risk and SNHL (OR = 1.66, 95% CI = 1.40-1.96, p < 0.001), but no significant relationship was shown with all covariates adjusted. However, significant associations were found between SNHL and both age and sex in both univariable and multivariable logistic regression models. Conclusion Our findings suggested that a higher cardiocerebrovascular risk burden was associated with an increased risk of SNHL, and the relationship may be influenced by age and sex. Future longitudinal studies are needed to investigate the mechanistic and pathologic vascular hypothesis of SNHL.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The primary objective of this study was to assess possible sex-related differences in AIED treatment. The secondary aim was to assess the long-term outcomes of treatment using pre- and post-treatment audiometry and speech discrimination scores. METHODS Adult patients with a diagnosis of AIED who were treated for their condition at the senior author's (RTS) practice from 2010 to 2022 were included in this study. Patients were grouped as males or females for further analysis and comparison. Data included past medical history, medication use, surgical history and social history. Air-conduction thresholds (500 to 8000 Hz) were collected and averaged into discrete variables for pre- and post-treatment. The change (∆) and percent change (%∆) of these variables following therapy were analyzed. Speech discrimination score (SDS) testing results were taken at the same time points as pure tone averages, and patients were sub-stratified based on evidence of improvement in SDS and compared accordingly. RESULTS One hundred eighty-four patients (78 male/106 female) were included in this study. The mean age of the male participants was 57.18 ± 15.92 years, and the mean age of the female participants was 53.49 ± 16.04 years (p = 0.220). Comorbid autoimmune disease (AD) was more prevalent in females than in males (38.7 % vs. 16.7 %, p = 0.001). Of the patients treated with oral steroids, females received significantly more courses than males (2.554 ± 2.078 vs. 1.946 ± 1.301, p = 0.020). However, the average duration of oral steroids used per trial did not differ significantly between males and females (21.02 ± 18.05 vs. 20.62 ± 7.49, p = 0.135). Audiological results demonstrated that the change (∆) in pure tone average (PTA) at 0.5, 1, 2, and 3 kHz (-4.21 ± 6.394 vs. -3.91 ± 6.105) and high-frequency pure tone average (HFPTA) at 4, 6, and 8 kHz (-4.55 ± 6.544 vs. -2.19 ± 6.842) was not significantly different between the sexes following treatment (p = 0.376 and p = 0.101, respectively). Similarly, the percentage change (%∆) in PTA (-13.17 % vs. -15.01 %) and HFPTA (-8.50 % vs. -6.76 %) also did not differ significantly between males and females (p = 0.900 and p = 0.367, respectively). One hundred-five (57.1 %) patients qualified for the SDS improvement subgroup for analysis, with 50 (47.6 %) being male and 55 (51.9 %) being female (p = 0.159). The change (∆) in SDS (15.12 ± 21.159 vs. 10.62 ± 19.206) and the percentage change (%∆) in SDS (16.71 % vs. 12.40 %) also showed no significant difference between male and female patients (p = 0.312 and p = 0.313, respectively). CONCLUSION AIED is not a uniform condition regarding clinical presentation, audiological findings or progression, nor is its treatment straightforward. The utilization and duration of cytotoxic medications, as well as PTA and SDS findings, did not differ between the sexes. However, significantly more courses of oral steroids were prescribed to females than males. Sex as a biological variable and its implications in the pathogenesis and treatment of AIED warrant further study.

Abstract
PURPOSE Evaluate for differences in demographic and clinical characteristics, occurrence of common symptoms, symptom severity scores, and quality of life (QOL) outcomes in survivors with (n = 155) and without (n = 118) audiometrically confirmed hearing loss. METHODS Survivors, who were recruited from throughout the San Francisco Bay area, completed the self-report questionnaires to obtain the information of demographic and clinical characteristics; the occurrence and severity of depression, anxiety, fatigue, decrements in energy, sleep disturbance, pain, and cognitive impairment; and the general and cancer-specific QOL outcomes. Parametric and non-parametric tests were used to evaluate for differences between the two survivor groups. RESULTS Survivors with audiometrically confirmed hearing loss were older, more likely to be male, were more likely to be unemployed, report a lower annual household income, and had a higher comorbidity burden. Except for the severity of worst pain, no between-group differences were found in the occurrence rates for or severity of any of the symptoms. Survivors with hearing loss reported worse physical function and general health scores. CONCLUSIONS While no between-group differences in symptom occurrence rates and severity scores were found, across the total sample, a relatively high percentage of survivors who were over 6 years from their cancer diagnosis reported clinically meaningful levels of depression (25%), anxiety (50%), fatigue (40%), decrements in energy (70%), sleep disturbance (58%), cognitive impairment (57%), and pain (60%). IMPLICATIONS FOR CANCER SURVIVORS Clinicians need to perform routine assessments of hearing loss, as well as common co-occurring symptoms and initiate individualized symptom management interventions.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Hearing loss is a major public health concern. Higher physical function may be related to the maintenance of hearing acuity. Therefore, this study examined the association between hearing loss and physical function in the general population. METHODS This cross-sectional study was conducted with health checkup participants who underwent pure-tone audiometry at a regional health care center in Japan. Information for physical function included handgrip strength, vital capacity (VC), and forced expiratory volume in one second (FEV1). A hearing threshold of >30 dB at 1 kHz and/or >40 dB at 4 kHz in either ear was identified as hearing loss. The characteristics of the subjects were examined with stratification by sex and age group. Multivariable logistic regression analysis was performed to examine the association between hearing loss and physical function with adjustments for age, body mass index and current smoking. RESULTS Among the 4766 study subjects, 56.5% were male. The mean age was 47.7 years (SD: 13.8 years; range: 20-86 years), and the prevalence of hearing loss was 12.8% based on the definition stated above. For females, handgrip strength, VC, and FEV1 showed significant negative associations with hearing loss (multivariable-adjusted OR [95% CI] = 0.691 [0.560-0.852], 0.542 [0.307-0.959], and 0.370 [0.183-0.747], respectively). These associations were not found in males. CONCLUSIONS Higher physical function was associated with a lower prevalence of hearing loss among females. This study suggests that it is important to maintain physical function for hearing loss in females. Further studies are required to investigate sex differences in the relationship between physical function and hearing loss in the general population.

Abstract
Several longitudinal studies have examined associations between renal dysfunction and hearing impairment. Here, we explored the longitudinal association between estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) and hearing impairment among the working-age population in Japan. Participants were 88,425 males and 38,722 females aged 20-59 years, without hearing impairment at baseline (2013), who attended Japanese occupational annual health check-ups from 2013 to 2020 fiscal year. eGFR was categorized into four groups (eGFR upper half of ≥90, lower half of ≥90 (reference), 60-89, and <60 mL/min/1.73 m2). Low- and high-frequency hearing impairment were assessed using data from pure-tone audiometric testing. A Cox proportional hazards model was applied to estimate hazard ratio (HR) values for hearing impairment. Low eGFR did not increase the risk of low- or high-frequency hearing impairment. For males, multivariable-adjusted HR of high-frequency hearing impairment was 1.16 (95% confidence interval, 1.01-1.34) for the upper half of the ≥90 mL/min/1.73 m2; however, this positive association between high eGFR and high-frequency hearing impairment did not appear to be robust in a number of sensitivity analyses. We conclude that, among the Japanese working-age population, eGFR was not generally associated with hearing impairment in people of either sex.

Abstract
Abstract
Purpose
This study aimed at identifying gender differences in the hearing thresholds in a sample of patients with otosclerosis before and after surgery to understand the impact of female hormones on auditory thresholds.
Methods
This retrospective study analyzed 184 patients (123 women and 61 men) affected by otosclerosis. All the patients were affected by conductive hearing loss and treated by stapedoplasty. Auditory thresholds at the baseline (T0) and one month after surgery (T30) were collected. Air and bone thresholds and Air Bone Gap (ABG) were compared between females and males using one-way ANOVA.
Results
Statistically significant differences were observed comparing the air threshold at T0 vs T30 both in women and men (p < 0.0001). No statistically significant differences were observed in the bone conduction thresholds before and after surgery. The comparison between females and males showed statistically significant differences both at T0 (p < 0.01) and T30 (p < 0.05) for air conduction thresholds and ABG at 4000 Hz.
Conclusion
Although stapedoplasty reduced the difference between females and males in the air conduction thresholds and ABG, women showed better recovery of their middle ear function with better auditory thresholds and ABG. The female hormones might positively impact the ligaments of the incudostapedial joint improving chain flexibility. This benefit might explain the statistically significant difference observed in women at 4000 Hz before and after surgery.
