Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIMS To investigate the associations of ideal cardiovascular health metrics (ICVHMs) with all-cause mortality among former and current smokers compared with never smokers. METHODS AND RESULTS A total of 378,147 participants [mean age (SD) years: 56.3 (8.1); 47.2 % men] were included from the UK Biobank cohort. The ICVHMs were combined Life's simple 7 from the American Heart Association and sleep duration time. The association was explored using COX regression models. During a median follow-up of 13.3 years, we documented 24,594 deaths. Compared with never smokers, among former smokers, the multivariable-adjusted hazard ratio (HR) for all-cause mortality was 1.82 (95%CI 1.71-1.92) for participants who had ≤2 ICVHMs and 1.03 (0.97-1.10) for participants who had ≥6 ICVHMs; among current smokers, the HRs for mortality were 2.74 (2.60-2.89) and 2.18 (1.78-2.67). The phenomenon was more pronounced among participants younger than 60 years [HR (95%CI), 1.82 (1.71-1.95) for ≤2 ICVHMs vs 1.04 (0.96-1.12) for ≥6 ICVHMs with age ≥60 years and 1.83 (1.62-2.06) vs 0.98 (0.88-1.11) with age <60 years among former smokers; 2.66 (2.49-2.85) vs 2.44 (1.84-3.24) with age ≥60 years and 2.85 (2.62-3.10) vs 1.96 (1.47-2.61) with age <60 years among current smokers]. In addition, the HR for mortality of each 1-number increment in ICVHMs was 0.87 (0.86-0.89) among former smokers and 0.91 (0.89-0.94) among current smokers. CONCLUSION Our findings indicated the importance of adherence to have more ICVHMs in the mortality risk among former smokers, and priority of smoking cessation in current smokers. IMPLICATIONS Studies have found that former smokers still have higher risks of lung cancer and all-cause mortality than never-smokers. The next question is whether the effects of previous or current smoking could be ameliorated by eight ideal cardiovascular health metrics (ICVHMs). We aim to explore whether ICVHMs may counteract the risk of all-cause mortality among former and current smokers. The results showed that only former smokers with ≥6 ICVHMs exhibited a comparable risk of all-cause mortality with never smokers. Furthermore, current smokers even having ≥6 ICVHMs still exhibited a higher risk of all-cause mortality compared with never smokers.

Abstract
Background: Cigarette smokers have elevated cardiovascular risk factors, which contributes significantly to mortality. Although social media is a potential avenue to deliver smoking interventions, its role in health promotion among smokers remains relatively unexplored.Objective: To examine the uptake and impact of health-related social media use in cigarette smokers.Methods: Using data from the 2017-2020 Health Information National Trends Survey, we evaluated differences in health-related social media use between smokers and nonsmokers. Multivariable logistic regression was performed to examine the association between social media use and positive health behaviors.Results: We included 1863 current smokers and 13,560 nonsmokers; Most participants were women (51.0%), White (64.6%), and 49.2% were aged ≥50 years. Smokers who used ≥1 social media site for health-related purposes in the past year were significantly more likely to meet the guideline recommendations for: (i) weekly physical activity (AOR 2.00, 95% CI 1.23-3.24), (ii) daily vegetable intake (AOR 2.48, 95% CI 1.10-5.59), and (iii) weekly strength training (AOR 1.80, 95% CI 1.10-2.94). However, the odds of reporting intentions to quit smoking (AOR 1.81, 95% CI 0.98-3.34) and attempts at smoking cessation (AOR 1.68, 95% CI 0.90-3.12) did not differ by health-related social media use.Conclusion: Smokers use social media for health-related purposes at comparable rates to nonsmokers. While our findings indicate that these platforms present a novel opportunity for health promotion among smokers, future research exploring the utility of social media in smoking cessation is crucial.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Elevated depressive symptoms and cigarette smoking are independently associated with poorer cardiovascular health (CVH), but it is unknown whether their treatment can synergistically improve CVH. We sought to characterize CVH of adults with comorbid depression and smoking and examine changes in CVH associated with changes in smoking and depression. METHODS Participants (N = 300, 55 % women) were adult smokers (≥ 1 cigarette/day) with lifetime major depressive disorder enrolled in a 12-week intervention trial targeting depression and smoking. Multiple linear regression examined prospective associations between changes in depression (Beck Depression Inventory-II), smoking (past 24-hour cigarettes or smoking abstinence), and modified CVH score (per American Heart Association, excluding smoking: diet, physical activity, body mass index, blood glucose, cholesterol, blood pressure). RESULTS Baseline mean CVH score was 5.87/12 points (SD = 2.13). No participants met "ideal" on all CVH components (blood glucose: 48 %, cholesterol: 46 %, physical activity: 38 %, body mass index: 24 %, blood pressure: 22 %, diet: 3 %). CVH scores did not change from baseline to end-of-treatment (M = 0.18 points, SD = 1.36, p = .177), nor did change in depression × smoking predict change in CVH (p = .978). However, greater reductions in depression were significantly associated with greater improvements in CVH (β = -0.04, SE = 0.01, p = .015). LIMITATIONS This study was limited by a short follow-up period, missing blood glucose and cholesterol data, and treatment-seeking smokers. CONCLUSIONS Adults with comorbid depression and smoking had poor CVH. Although integrated treatment for depression and smoking improved both conditions, only reductions in depression were associated with improvements in CVH. These findings have implications for integrating psychosocial treatment into CVH promotion efforts. REGISTRATION NCT02378714 (clinicaltrials.gov).

Abstract
BACKGROUND Tuberculosis (TB) and its risk factors are independently associated with cardiovascular disease (CVD). We determined the prevalence and associations of CVD risk factors among people with drug-resistant tuberculosis (DRTB) in Uganda. METHODS In this cross-sectional study, we enrolled people with microbiologically confirmed DRTB at four treatment sites in Uganda between July to December 2021. The studied CVD risk factors were any history of cigarette smoking, diabetes mellitus (DM) hypertension, high body mass index (BMI), central obesity and dyslipidaemia. We used modified Poisson regression models with robust standard errors to determine factors independently associated with each of dyslipidaemia, hypertension, and central obesity. RESULTS Among 212 participants, 118 (55.7%) had HIV. Overall, 196 (92.5%, 95% confidence interval (CI) 88.0-95.3) had ≥ 1 CVD risk factor. The prevalence; 95% CI of individual CVD risk factors was: dyslipidaemia (62.5%; 55.4-69.1), hypertension (40.6%; 33.8-47.9), central obesity (39.3%; 32.9-46.1), smoking (36.3%; 30.1-43.1), high BMI (8.0%; 5.0-12.8) and DM (6.5%; 3.7-11.1). Dyslipidaemia was associated with an increase in glycated haemoglobin (adjusted prevalence ratio (aPR) 1.14, 95%CI 1.06-1.22). Hypertension was associated with rural residence (aPR 1.89, 95% CI 1.14-3.14) and previous history of smoking (aPR 0.46, 95% CI 0.21-0.98). Central obesity was associated with increasing age (aPR 1.02, 95%CI 1.00-1.03), and elevated diastolic blood pressure (aPR 1.03 95%CI 1.00-1.06). CONCLUSION There is a high prevalence of CVD risk factors among people with DRTB in Uganda, of which dyslipidaemia is the commonest. We recommend integrated services for identification and management of CVD risk factors in DRTB.

Abstract
People with tuberculosis (TB) are at risk of major adverse cardiovascular events. We estimated the prevalence of cardiovascular risk (CVR) factors among people with active TB in Africa. This was a systematic review and meta-analysis of studies from Africa. We searched EMBASE, MEDLINE through PubMed, Web of Science, the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, mRCTs, Clinical trials.gov, and International Clinical Trials Registry Platform from inception to 31st December 2021. Among 110 eligible studies, 79 (238,316 participants) were included in the meta-analysis for smoking, 67 (52,793 participants) for current alcohol use, 30 (31,450 participants) for hazardous alcohol use, 51 (37,879 participants) for diabetes mellitus (DM), 19 (18,211 participants) for hypertension and 18 (13,910 participants) for obesity. The pooled prevalence was 26.0% (95% confidence interval 22.0–29.0) for smoking, 30.0% (25.0–35.0) for any current alcohol use, 21.0% (17.0–26.0) for hazardous alcohol use, 14.0% (9.0–18.0) for hypertension, 7.0% (6.0–9.0) for DM, and 4.0% (2.0–5.0) for obesity. Cost-effective strategies are needed to screen for CVR factors among people with active TB in Africa.
