Abstract
Early detection of alteration of muscle strength, quantity, and quality, and sarcopenia is useful in non-cirrhotic chronic hepatitis B (NC-CHB) patients. Studies, which explored the handgrip strength (HGS) are scarce with questionable results, and no previous case-control study explored the presence of sarcopenia.The aim of this study was to assess the muscle strength [i.e.; HGS absolute (HGSA), HGSA/body mass index (BMI)], muscle quantity [i.e.; appendicular skeletal muscle (ASM), ASM/height2, ASM/total body weight (TBW), ASM/BMI], and muscle quality [i.e.; HGSA/total muscle mass (TMM), HGSA/ASM] of NC-CHB patients.This was a case-control study. Cases (n = 26) were untreated NC-CHB patients, and controls (n = 28) were 'apparently' healthy participants. Muscle mass was estimated via the TMM (kg) and ASM (kg). Muscle strength was evaluated via the HGS data [i.e.; HGSA (kg), HGSA/BMI (m2)]. Six variants of HGSA were determined: highest values for the dominant and non-dominant hands, highest value between the two hands, averages of the three measurements for the two hands, and the average of the highest values of the two hands. Muscle quantity was expressed in three relative variants (ASM/height2, ASM/TBW, and ASM/BMI). Muscle quality was evaluated via relative HGS data adjusted by muscle mass (i.e.; HGSA/TMM, HGSA/ASM). Probable and confirmed sarcopenia were retained in front of low muscle strength, and low muscle strength and muscle quantity or quality, respectively.There were no significant differences between controls and NC-CHB patients in values of muscle i) Strength whatever the HGS' mode of expression (e.g.; HGSA/BMI: 1.59 ± 0.54 vs. 1.53 ± 0.54 m2, p = 0.622, respectively), ii) Quantity (e.g.; ASM/BMI: 0.79 ± 0.24 vs. 0.77 ± 0.23 m2, p = 0.883), and iii) Quality (e.g.; HGSA/ASM: 2.00 ± 0.25 vs. 2.01 ± 0.41, p = 0.952, respectively). One NC-CHB participant had a confirmed sarcopenia.To conclude, both controls and NC-CHB patients had similar HGS values. Only one NC-CHB patient had a confirmed sarcopenia.

Abstract
There is a paucity of evidence about the associations of physical activity (PA) and handgrip strength (HGS) within different domains of quality of life (QoL) in Chinese pediatric cancer survivors. We, therefore, conducted this multicenter cross-sectional study aimed to investigate whether increased PA level and HGS are associated with higher scores in different QoL domains (i.e., physical, emotional, social, and school functioning) in pediatric cancer survivors. PA was assessed with a validated self-reported PA rating scale. In total, 191 Chinese pediatric cancer survivors aged 9 to 16 years were included in the analysis. Results showed that engaging in a higher level of PA was significantly associated with improved QoL in different domains, including physical (β = 0.543, p < 0.001), emotional (β = 0.449, p < 0.001), social (β = 0.434, p < 0.001), and school functioning (β = 0.407, p < 0.001). Greater HGS was also associated with better physical (β = 0.230, p ≤ 0.001) and emotional (β = 0.261, p ≤ 0.001) functioning. Findings from this study provide evidence of the significant beneficial impact of regular PA on pediatric cancer survivors’ QoL along their survivorship trajectory.

Is malnutrition a determining factor of health-related quality of life in hemodialysis patients? A cross-sectional design examining relationships with a comprehensive assessment of nutritional status. Qual Life Res 2021; 31:1441-1459. Abstract
PURPOSE To identify relationships between health-related quality of life (HRQOL) and nutritional status in hemodialysis (HD) patients. METHOD Secondary data from a cross-sectional survey was utilized. HRQOL was assessed for 379 HD patients using the generic Short Form 36 (SF-36) and disease-specific Kidney-Disease Quality of Life-36 (KDQOL-36). Malnutrition was indicated by malnutrition inflammation score (MIS) ≥ 5, and presence of protein-energy wasting (PEW). The individual nutritional parameters included the domains of physical status, serum biomarkers, and dietary intake. Multivariate associations were assessed using the general linear model. RESULTS MIS ≥ 5 was negatively associated with SF-36 scores of physical functioning (MIS < 5 = 73.4 ± 8.0 SE vs MIS ≥ 5 = 64.6 ± 7.7 SE, P < 0.001), role-limitation-physical (MIS < 5 = 65.3 ± 14.3 SE vs MIS ≥ 5 = 52.9 ± 14.0 SE, P = 0.006), general health (MIS < 5 = 53.7 ± 7.5 SE vs MIS ≥ 5 = 47.0 ± 7.1 SE, P = 0.003), and PCS-36 (MIS < 5 = 40.5 ± 3.3 SE vs MIS ≥ 5 = 35.9 ± 3.1 SE, P < 0.001); and KDQOL-36 score of symptoms/problems (MIS < 5 = 78.9 ± 5.6 SE vs MIS ≥ 5 = 74.8 ± 5.4 SE, P = 0.022), but not with PEW by any tool. Of individual nutritional parameters, underweight (68.1 ± 5.4 SE, P = 0.031), normal weight (63.8 ± 2.8 SE, P = 0.023), and overweight (64.3 ± 2.9 SE, P = 0.003) patients had significantly higher physical functioning scores compared to obese patients (44.8 ± 5.5 SE). Serum albumin levels were positively associated with physical functioning (P = 0.041) score. HGS was also positively associated with physical functioning (P = 0.036), and vitality (P = 0.041) scores. Greater dietary phosphorus intakes were significantly associated with lower scores for role limitation-physical (P = 0.008), bodily pain (P = 0.043), and PCS-36 (P = 0.024). CONCLUSION Malnutrition diagnosis by MIS, but not PEW, indicated associations with HRQOL in HD patients. Individual nutritional parameters that related to higher HRQOL were BMI < 30 kg/m2, better dietary phosphorus control, greater muscle strength and higher visceral protein pool.

Abstract
SCOPE This study investigated the combined effect of the angiotensin II (AT-II) receptor blocker losartan and branched-chain amino acids (BCAAs) on skeletal muscle atrophy in rats with cirrhosis and steatohepatitis. METHOD AND RESULTS Fischer 344 rats are fed a choline-deficient l-amino acid-defined (CDAA) diet for 12 weeks and treated with oral losartan (30 mg kg-1 day-1 ) and/or BCAAs (Aminoleban EN, 2500 mg kg-1 day-1 ). Treatment with losartan and BCAAs attenuated hepatic inflammation and fibrosis and improved skeletal muscle atrophy and strength in CDAA-fed rats. Both agents reduced intramuscular myostatin and pro-inflammatory cytokine levels, resulting in inhibition of the ubiquitin-proteasome system (UPS) through interference with the SMAD and nuclear factor-kappa B pathways, respectively. Losartan also augmented the BCAA-mediated increase of skeletal muscle mass by promoting insulin growth factor-I production and mitochondrial biogenesis. Moreover, losartan decreased the intramuscular expression of transcription factor EB (TFEB), a transcriptional inducer of E3 ubiquitin ligase regulated by AT-II. In vitro assays illustrated that losartan promoted mitochondrial biogenesis and reduced TFEB expression in AT-II-stimulated rat myocytes, thereby potentiating the inhibitory effects of BCAAs on the UPS and caspase-3 cleavage. CONCLUSION These results indicate that this regimen could serve as a novel treatment for patients with sarcopenia and liver cirrhosis.

Abstract
AIM To examine the relationship between longitudinal quality of life (QOL) change, as assessed by the 36-Item Short Form Health Survey (SF-36), sarcopenia-related factors and body composition in patients with chronic liver diseases (CLDs). PATIENTS AND METHODS Data from patients with CLDs (n=184) were retrospectively analyzed, focusing on factors associated with the difference of physical and mental component summary score (PCS and MCS) in SF-36 between the two visits (ΔPCS and ΔMCS). The difference of serum albumin level, body mass index (BMI), arm circumference, arm muscle circumference, grip strength (GS), skeletal muscle index, extracellular to total body water ratio between the two visits were included into the multiple regression analysis. RESULTS Δalbumin (p=0.0325) and ΔGS (p<0.0001) were independent factors linked to ΔPCS Δalbumin (p=0.0005) and ΔBMI (p=0.0232) were independent factors linked to ΔMCS Conclusion: Significance of serum albumin level, muscle strength and body composition on health-related QOL in CLD patients should be emphasized.

Abstract
AIM To elucidate the common and different points between sarcopenia and frailty in chronic liver damage (CLD). PATIENTS AND METHODS Patients with both grip strength decline and skeletal muscle index decline were regarded as sarcopenia. Frailty was defined as a syndrome in which 3 or more of the following criteria were met: i) exhaustion, ii) body weight loss, iii) slow walking speed, iv) muscle weakness, and v) low physical activity. RESULTS Sarcopenia and frailty were identified in 52 patients (15.2%) and 46 (13.5%), respectively. The prevalence of sarcopenia and frailty was well stratified according to age and the liver cirrhosis (LC) status. In the multivariate analysis, we identified significant factors for sarcopenia: i) age, ii) LC, iii) body mass index and iv) extracellular water (ECW) to total body water (TBW) ratio, while only the ECW to TBW ratio was significant for frailty. CONCLUSION Sarcopenia and frailty in CLD should be separately evaluated.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/AIM To elucidate the influence of calf circumference (CC) on sarcopenia in patients with chronic liver damages (CLDs, n=525, 255 men). PATIENTS AND METHODS Anthropometry parameters including arm circumference, arm muscle circumference, CC, arm muscle area, triceps skinfold thickness, waist circumference and body mass index were measured. Patients with both grip strength (GS) decline and skeletal muscle index (SMI) decline were diagnosed as sarcopenic. RESULTS Liver cirrhosis was identified in 103 cases (40.4%) in males and 87 cases (32.2%) in females. Sarcopenia was identified in 23 male patients (9.0%) and 38 female patients (14.1%). CC had the strong positive correlation with SMI both in male (r=0.79, p<0.0001) and female (r=0.83, p<0.0001). Among the above mentioned 7 anthropometry parameters, CC had the highest area under the receiver operating characteristics curve (AUC) for sarcopenia both in males (AUC=0.88) and females (AUC=0.86). CONCLUSION CC can be helpful for predicting sarcopenia in CLDs.

Abstract
AIM To elucidate the relationship between the finger-circle test (Yubi-wakka [in Japanese] test; three levels of bigger, just-fits, and smaller) and sarcopenia-related factors and anthropometric parameters in patients with chronic liver disease (n = 202, 99 men, mean age 61 years). METHODS Patients with both grip strength decline (<26 kg for men and <18 kg for women) and skeletal muscle index (SMI) decline (<7.0 kg/m2 in men and <5.7 kg/m2 in female) were diagnosed as sarcopenia. RESULTS Liver cirrhosis was found in 56 patients (27.7%). The proportions of bigger, just-fits, and smaller in liver cirrhosis versus non-liver cirrhosis patients were 51.8%, 21.4%, and 26.8% versus 77.4%, 11.4%, and 8.2% (p < 0.01). The proportions of grip strength decline in patients with bigger, just-fits, and smaller were 12.0% (77/142), 21.2% (7/33), and 40.7% (11/27; overall p < 0.01). The proportions of SMI decline in patients with bigger, just-fits, and smaller were 9.9% (14/142), 45.5% (15/33), and 77.8% (21/27; overall p < 0.01). The proportions of sarcopenia in patients with bigger, just-fits, and smaller were 3.5% (5/142), 18.2% (6/33), and 33.3% (9/27; overall p < 0.01). In both sexes, arm circumference, triceps skinfold thickness, calf circumference, and waist circumference were significantly stratified according to the finger-circle test. In the multivariate analysis, smaller was an independent predictor for SMI decline (p < 0.01, risk ratio 8.188, bigger as a reference), and body mass index was an independent predictor for both SMI decline and sarcopenia. CONCLUSION The finger-circle test can be helpful for the screening of sarcopenia in chronic liver disease and is closely linked to body composition.

Abstract
Skeletal muscle is the largest organ in the body, and skeletal muscle atrophy results from a shift in the balance of protein synthesis and degradation toward protein breakdown. Primary sarcopenia is defined as a loss of skeletal muscle mass and strength or physical function due to aging, and secondary sarcopenia is defined as a loss of skeletal muscle mass and strength or physical function due to underlying diseases. Liver cirrhosis (LC) is one of the representative diseases which can be complicated with secondary sarcopenia. Muscle mass loss becomes more pronounced with worsening liver reserve in LC patients. While frailty encompasses a state of increased vulnerability to environmental factors, there is also the reversibility of returning to a healthy state with appropriate intervention. Several assessment criteria for sarcopenia and frailty were proposed in recent years. In 2016, the Japan Society of Hepatology created assessment criteria for sarcopenia in liver disease. In Japan, health checkups for frailty in the elderly aged 75 years or more started in April 2020. Both sarcopenia and frailty can be adverse predictors for cirrhotic patients. In this review article, we will summarize the current knowledge of sarcopenia and frailty in LC patients.

Abstract
Previous studies have reported prognostic factors for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) patients receiving lenvatinib; however, no studies have evaluated the effects of both handgrip strength and skeletal muscle mass on the clinical outcomes. Therefore, this retrospective study investigated the individual effect of handgrip strength, skeletal muscle mass, and sarcopenia on clinical outcomes of 53 HCC patients treated with lenvatinib. Before receiving lenvatinib, handgrip strength and skeletal muscle index (SMI) were measured. Low handgrip strength and muscle depletion were defined as <26 and <18 kg and SMI <42 and SMI <38 cm2/m2 in men and women, respectively. Sarcopenia was defined as having low handgrip strength and muscle depletion. Multivariate analysis identified modified albumin–bilirubin grade 1–2a (p = 0.010), Barcelona Clinic Liver Cancer stage A–B (p = 0.011), and absence of low handgrip strength (p = 0.015) as favorable prognostic factors for survival. Furthermore, sarcopenia was an independent significant prognostic factor for survival. Time to treatment failure was associated with handgrip strength and sarcopenia. Our findings suggest that handgrip strength may be a useful marker of clinical outcomes in HCC patients treated with lenvatinib.

Abstract
Sarcopenia in patients with liver cirrhosis (LC) has been attracting much attention these days because of the close linkage to adverse outcomes. LC can be related to secondary sarcopenia due to protein metabolic disorders and energy metabolic disorders. LC is associated with profound alterations in gut microbiota and injuries at the different levels of defensive mechanisms of the intestinal barrier. Dysbiosis refers to a state in which the diversity of gut microbiota is decreased by decreasing the bacterial species and the number of bacteria that compose the gut microbiota. The severe disturbance of intestinal barrier in LC can result in dysbiosis, several bacterial infections, LC-related complications, and sarcopenia. Here in this review, we will summarize the current knowledge of the relationship between sarcopenia and dysbiosis in patients with LC.

Abstract
We sought to examine the relationship between frailty and health-related quality of life as evaluated using the 36-item Short-Form Health Survey (SF-36) questionnaire in Japanese chronic liver disease (CLD) patients (n = 341, 122 liver cirrhosis cases, median age = 66 years). Frailty was defined as a clinical syndrome in which three or more of the following criteria were met (frailty score 3, 4, or 5): unintentional body weight loss, self-reported exhaustion, muscle weakness (grip strength: <26 kg in men and <18 kg in women), slow walking speed (<1.0 m/s), and low physical activity. Robust (frailty score 0), prefrail (frailty score 1 or 2), and frailty were found in 108 (31.7%), 187 (54.8%), and 46 (13.5%) patients, respectively. In all eight scales of the SF-36 (physical functioning, role physical, bodily pain, general health perception, vitality, social functioning, role emotion, and mental health), and the physical component summary score and mental component summary score, each score was well stratified according to the frailty status (all p < 0.0001). In the multivariate analysis, age (p = 0.0126), physical functioning (p = 0.0005), and vitality (p = 0.0246) were independent predictors linked to the presence of frailty. In conclusion, Japanese CLD patients with frailty displayed poorer conditions, both physically and mentally.

Abstract
Here we sought to clarify the prognostic impact of sarcopenia-related markers (grip strength (GS), muscle mass using bioimpedance analysis and patient quality of life as assessed by the 36-Item Short-Form Health Survey (SF36)) in patients with chronic liver diseases (CLDs, n = 411; 160 liver cirrhosis patients; median age, 64 years) on the incidence of composite hepatic events (CHEs). A GS decrease was defined as <26 kg in men and <18 kg in women, while a skeletal muscle mass index (SMI) decrease was defined as <7.0 kg/m2 in men and <5.7 kg/m2 in women based on the current guidelines. The physical and metal component summary scores on the SF36 were also included into the analysis. Sixty-two patients (15.1%) had the first incidence of CHEs. The three-year cumulative incidence rates of CHEs in patients with GS decrease or non-decrease were 24.51% and 12.44% (p = 0.0057). The three-year cumulative incidence rates of CHEs in patients with an SMI decrease or non-decrease were 19.65% and 12.99% (p = 0.0982). Multivariate analysis revealed that GS decrease (p = 0.0350) and prothrombin time (p = 0.0293) were significantly associated with the incidence of CHEs. In conclusion, GS can be an independent predictor for CHE development in patients with CLDs.

Abstract
We aim to clarify the impact of walking speed (WS) and analyze factors linked to WS decline in patients with chronic liver diseases (CLDs, 165 males and 191 females, 137 liver cirrhosis patients). The WS decline is defined as <0.8 m/second (m/s), referring to the guidelines. The median (range) WS was 1.3 m/s (0.2–2.02 m/s). There were 17 patients with WS < 0.8 m/s (4.8%). The WS value was significantly correlated with the handgrip strength value both in males (r2 = 0.252, p < 0.0001) and females (r2 = 0.256, p < 0.0001). In the multivariate analysis of factors associated with WS decline, only the extracellular water (ECW) to total body water (TBW) ratio using bioimpedance analysis was an independent predictor (p = 0.0398). Extracellular fluid excess was categorized as follows: normal condition (ECW to TBW ratio < 0.390), mild overhydrated condition (ECW to TBW ratio 0.390–0.399), and moderate to severe overhydrated condition (ECW to TBW ratio ≥ 0.400). The WS value was well stratified according to the ECW to TBW ratio (normal vs. mild, p = 0.0001; mild vs. moderate to severe, p < 0.0001; normal vs. moderate to severe, p < 0.0001; overall p-value < 0.0001). In conclusion, the ECW to TBW ratio can be closely linked to WS decline in CLD patients.

Abstract
Grip strength has been proposed as a biomarker. Supporting this proposition, evidence is provided herein that shows grip strength is largely consistent as an explanator of concurrent overall strength, upper limb function, bone mineral density, fractures, falls, malnutrition, cognitive impairment, depression, sleep problems, diabetes, multimorbidity, and quality of life. Evidence is also provided for a predictive link between grip strength and all-cause and disease-specific mortality, future function, bone mineral density, fractures, cognition and depression, and problems associated with hospitalization. Consequently, the routine use of grip strength can be recommended as a stand-alone measurement or as a component of a small battery of measurements for identifying older adults at risk of poor health status.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To assess the association between hand grip strength (HGS) and health-related quality of life (HRQoL) among Korean cancer survivors. DESIGN Population-based cross-sectional study. SETTING A nationally representative population survey data (face-to-face interviews and health examinations were performed in mobile examination centres). PARTICIPANTS A total of 1037 cancer survivors (person with cancer of any type who is still living) with available data on HGS and HRQoL in the sixth and seventh Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys (2014-2017). PRIMARY OUTCOME MEASURES Prevalence of impaired HRQoL by HGS. RESULTS Among 1037 cancer survivors (60.7% women, mean age=62.2 years), 19.2% of them had weak HGS according to gender-specific cut-off values (lowest quintile<29.7 kg in men and <19.7 kg in women). In the study population, the most common cancer site was the stomach, followed by the thyroid, breast, colorectal and cervix. Individuals with weak HGS showed statistically significantly increased impairment in all five dimensions of the EuroQoL-5 dimension (EQ-5D) compared with those in patients with normal HGS. In a multinomial logistic regression analysis, impaired HRQoL (some or extreme problem in EQ-5D) was significantly reduced in each dimension of the EQ-5D, except for anxiety/depression, when HGS was increased. The OR for impaired HRQoL ranged from 0.86 to 0.97 per 1 kg increase in HGS in four dimensions (mobility, self-care, usual activity and pain/discomfort). CONCLUSIONS Weak HGS was associated with impaired HRQoL in cancer survivors. Future longitudinal studies are needed to confirm the causality between HGS and HRQoL in cancer survivors.

Abstract
We sought to compare the impact upon grip strength (GS) between the Mac-2 binding protein glycosylation isomer (M2BPGi) and the Fibrosis-4 (FIB4) index in chronic liver disease (CLD) patients (n = 376: 171 males and 205 females, and 137 liver cirrhosis (LC) cases (36.4%)). Factors linked to the low GS (<26 kg in male and <18 kg in female) were also investigated using univariate and multivariate analyses. The median GS in males was 35.5 kg, while that in females was 21.1 kg. The median M2BPGi was 1.11 cutoff index, whereas the median FIB4 index was 2.069. In both male (P < 0.0001) and female (P = 0.0001), GS in LC patients was significantly lower than that in non-LC patients. In males, M2BPGi (r = −0.4611, P < 0.0001) and the FIB4 index (r = −0.4556, P < 0.0001) significantly correlated with GS. Similarly, in females, M2BPGi (r = −0.33326, P < 0.0001) and our FIB4 index (r = −0.26388, P = 0.0001) also significantly correlated with GS. In the multivariate analyses of factors linked to the low GS, independent factors were: M2BPGi (P = 0.0003) and skeletal muscle index (P = 0.0007) in males, and age (P < 0.0001) and serum albumin level (P = 0.0484) in females. In conclusion, liver fibrosis markers were well-correlated with GS in CLD patients. In particular, M2BPGi can be helpful for predicting the low GS in male patients.

Abstract
Several million patients with liver cirrhosis suffer minimal hepatic encephalopathy (MHE), with mild cognitive and coordination impairments that reduce their quality of life and life span. Hyperammonaemia and peripheral inflammation act synergistically to induce these neurological alterations. We propose that MHE appearance is because of the changes in peripheral immune system, which are transmitted to brain, leading to neuroinflammation that alters neurotransmission leading to cognitive and motor alterations. We summarize studies showing that MHE in cirrhotic patients is associated with alterations in the immune system and that patients died with HE show neuroinflammation in cerebellum, with microglial and astrocytic activation and Purkinje cell loss. We also summarize studies in animal models of MHE on the role of peripheral inflammation in neuroinflammation induction, how neuroinflammation alters neurotransmission and how this leads to cognitive and motor alterations. These studies identify therapeutic targets and treatments that improve cognitive and motor function. Rats with MHE show neuroinflammation in hippocampus and altered NMDA and AMPA receptor membrane expression, which impairs spatial learning and memory. Neuroinflammation in cerebellum is associated with altered GABA transporters and extracellular GABA, which impair motor coordination and learning in a Y maze. These alterations are reversed by treatments that reduce peripheral inflammation (anti-TNFα, ibuprofen), neuroinflammation (sulphoraphane, p38 inhibitors), GABAergic tone (bicuculline, pregnenolone sulphate) or increase extracellular cGMP (sildenafil or cGMP). The mechanisms identified would also occur in other chronic diseases associated with inflammation, aging and some mental and neurodegenerative diseases. Treatments that improve MHE may also be beneficial to treat these pathologies.

Abstract
Association between sarcopenia, as evaluated by grip strength (GS) and skeletal muscle mass (SMM), and depression, as evaluated by Beck Depression Inventory-2nd edition (BDI-II) in chronic liver diseases (CLDs, n = 414, average age = 61.5 years), was investigated. Study subjects were classified into four groups: Group A (n = 60), lower GS and lower SMM (sarcopenia); group B (n = 44), lower GS and higher SMM; group C (n = 100), higher GS and lower SMM; group D (n = 210), higher GS and higher SMM. Factors associated with BDI-II score ≥11 were examined. BDI-II score 0–10 (normal) was found in 284 (68.6%), 11–16 (minimal) in 76 (18.4%), 17–20 (mild) in 24 (5.8%), 21–30 (moderate) in 15 (3.6%), and ≥31 (severe) in 15 (3.6%). The average ± standard deviation BDI-II score in liver cirrhosis (LC) patients (10.2 ± 9.6, n = 152) was significantly higher than that in non-LC patients (7.4 ± 7.2, n = 262) (p = 0.0058). Univariate analysis identified three factors to be significantly associated with BDI-I score ≥11: Our classification (groups of A, B, C, and D) (p = 0.0259), serum albumin (p = 0.0445), and the presence of LC (p = 0.0157). Multivariate analysis revealed that only group A (p = 0.0074, group D as a reference) was significant. In conclusion, sarcopenia can be an independent predictor for depression in CLDs.

Abstract
Despite the growing use of minimal clinically important difference (MCID) as a cancer outcome measure, no study has reported clinically significant outcomes in cancer patients. We defined MCID and evaluated the use of preoperative HRQoL for predicting MCID and survival after surgical resection of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). In total, 369 patients completed the Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy-Hepatobiliary (FACT-Hep) and the SF-36 at baseline and at two years post-operative at three tertiary academic hospitals. The corresponding MCID values were 3.6 (SF-36 physical component summary), 4.2 (SF-36 mental component summary), 5.4 (FACT-General total score), and 6.7 (FACT-Hep total score). The predictors of achieving postoperative MCID were significantly higher in patients who had low preoperative HRQoL score, advanced age, high education level, and high BMI (p < 0.05). However, patients with a high preoperative HRQoL score, high education level, high BMI, and low Charlson comorbidity index score were significantly associated with survival (p < 0.05). Preoperative HRQoL scores were predictive of MCID and overall survival after surgical resection of HCC. The findings of this study may be useful for managing the preoperative expectations of candidates for HCC resection and for developing shared decision-making procedures for patients undergoing surgical resection of HCC.
