Tribological Behavior of Titanium Alloy Treated by Nitriding and Surface Texturing Composite Technology

Impact of Beam Deflection Geometry on the Surface Architecture and Mechanical Properties of Electron-Beam-Modified TC4 Titanium Alloy

This paper aims to investigate the impact of beam deflection geometry on the structure, surface architecture, and friction coefficient of electron-beam-modified TC4 titanium alloys. During the experiments, the electron beam was deflected in the form of different scanning geometries, namely linear, circular, and matrix. The structure of the treated specimens was investigated in terms of their phase composition by employing X-ray diffraction experiments. The microstructure was studied by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The surface architecture was examined by atomic force microscopy (AFM). The friction coefficient was studied by a mechanical wear test. It was found that the linear and circular deflection geometries lead to a transformation of the phase composition, from double-phase α + β to α' martensitic structure. The application of a linear manner of scanning leads to a residual amount of beta phase. The use of a matrix does not tend to structural changes on the surface of the TC4 alloy. In the case of linear geometry, the thickness of the modified zone is more than 800 μm while, in the case of EBSM using circular scanning, the thickness is about 160 μm. The electron-beam surface modification leads to a decrease in the surface roughness to about 27 nm in EBSM with linear deflection geometry and 31 nm in circular deflection geometry, compared to that of the pure TC4 substrate (about 160 nm). The electron-beam surface modification of the TC4 alloy leads to a decrease in the coefficient of friction (COF), with the lowest COF values obtained in the case of linear deflection geometry (0.32). The results obtained in this study show that beam deflection geometry has a significant effect on the surface roughness and friction coefficient of the treated surfaces. It was found that the application of a linear manner of scanning leads to the formation of a surface with the lowest roughness and friction coefficient.

Preparation and Study on Fretting Tribological Behavior of Composite Lubrication Structure on the Titanium Alloy Surface

As an excellent light metal material, titanium alloy has an important application in high technology equipment. In this study, the composite lubrication structure was prepared on the titanium alloy surface by combining the surface texture, thermal oxidation layer, and polytetrafluoroethylene(PTFE)-based lubricating coating. The effect of texture parameters and thermal oxidation layer on the fretting wear behavior of the composite lubrication structure was evaluated under a load of 50 N. The results showed that the PTFE-based lubricating coating on the textured surface showed excellent friction-reduction and anti-wear effect compared with the coating on the single smooth surface and thermal oxidation surface. The introduction of a thermal oxidation layer on the textured surface further improved the fretting wear life of lubrication coating. The friction coefficient and wear rate can be as low as 0.242 and 2.3 × 10−5 mm3·N−1m−1, respectively, under dry fretting contact conditions. Compared with the untextured surface, the longevity of the composite lubrication structure is extended by more than 90%.

(Ti,Al)O2 Whiskers Grown during Glow Discharge Nitriding of Ti-6Al-7Nb Alloy

Plasma nitriding of titanium alloys is capable of effective surface hardening at temperatures significantly lower than gas nitriding, but at a cost of much stronger surface roughening. Especially interesting are treatments performed at the lower end of the temperature window used in such cases, as they are least damaging to highly polished parts. Therefore identifying the most characteristic defects is of high importance. The present work was aimed at identifying the nature of pin-point bumps formed at the glow discharged plasma nitrided Ti-6Al-7Nb alloy using plan-view scanning and cross-section transmission electron microscopy methods. It helped to establish that these main surface defects developed at the treated surface are (Ti,Al)O₂ nano-whiskers of diameter from 20 nm to 40 nm, and length up to several hundreds of nanometers. The performed investigation confirmed that the surface imperfection introduced by plasma nitriding at the specified range should be of minor consequences to the mechanical properties of the treated material.

Comparison of Different Thermo-Chemical Treatments Methods of Ti-6Al-4V Alloy in Terms of Tribological and Corrosion Properties

Titanium and its alloys are characterized by high mechanical strength, good corrosion resistance, high biocompatibility and relatively low Young’s modulus. For many years, one of the most commonly used and described titanium alloys has been Ti-6Al-4V. The great interest in this two-phase titanium alloy is due to the broad possibilities of shaping its mechanical and physico-chemical properties using modern surface engineering techniques. The high coefficient of friction and tendency to galling are the most important drawbacks limiting the application of this material in many areas. In this regard, such methods as carburizing, nitriding, oxidation, and the synthesis of thin films using physical vapor deposition (PVD) and chemical vapor deposition (CVD) methods may significantly improve the tribological properties of titanium alloys. The influence of thermo-chemical treatment (oxidation, carburizing and nitriding) on tribological properties and corrosion resistance of Ti-6Al-4V alloy is presented in this paper. The results include metallographic studies, analysis of tribological and mechanical properties and corrosion resistance as well. They indicate significant improvements in mechanical properties manifested by a twofold increase in hardness and improved corrosion resistance for the oxidation process. The carburizing was most important for reducing the coefficient of friction and wear rate. The nitriding process had the least effect on the properties of Ti-6Al-4V alloy.

Surface, Subsurface and Tribological Properties of Ti6Al4V Alloy Shot Peened under Different Parameters

Ti6Al4V alloy was shot peened by using stainless-steel shots with different sizes (0.09–0.14 mm (S10) and 0.7–1.0 mm (S60)) for two durations (5 and 15 min) using a custom-designed peening system. The shot size was the main parameter modifying the roughness (0.74 µm for S10 vs. 2.27 µm for S60), whereas a higher peening time slightly increased roughness. Hardness improved up to approximately 35% by peening with large shots, while peening time was insignificant in hardness improvement. However, longer peening duration with large shots led to an unwanted formation of micro-cracks and delamination on the peened surfaces. After dry sliding wear tests, the mass loss of peened samples (S60 for 15 min) was 25% higher than that of un-peened samples, while the coefficient of friction decreased by 12%. Plastically deformed regions and micro-scratches were observed on the worn surfaces, which corresponds to mostly adhesive and abrasive wear mechanisms. The present study sheds light on how surface, subsurface and tribological properties of Ti6Al4V vary with shot peening and peening parameters, which paves the way for the understanding of the mechanical, surface, and tribological behavior of shot peened Ti6Al4V used in both aerospace and biomedical applications.

Abrasive Wear Resistance of Plasma-Nitrided Ti Enhanced by Ultrasonic Surface Rolling Processing Pre-Treatment

The objective of the given work was to investigate abrasive wear behaviours of titanium (Ti) treated by ultrasonic surface rolling processing (USRP) pre-treatment and plasma nitriding (PN). Simulated lunar regolith particles (SLRPs) were employed as abrasive materials during characterization of tribological performances. The experimental results showed that SLRPs cause severe abrasive wear on Ti plasma-nitrided at 750 °C via the mechanism of micro-cutting. Due to the formation of a harder and thicker nitriding layer, the abrasive wear resistance of the Ti plasma-nitrided at 850 °C was enhanced, and its wear mechanism was mainly fatigue. USRP pre-treatment was effective at enhancing the abrasive wear resistance of plasma-nitrided Ti, due to the enhancement of the hardness and thickness of the nitride layer. Nevertheless, SLRPs significantly decreased the friction coefficient of Ti treated by USRP pre-treatment and PN, because the rolling of small granular abrasives impeded the adhesion of the worn surface. Furthermore, USRP pre-treatment also caused the formation of a dimpled surface with a large number of micropores which can hold wear debris during tribo-tests, and finally, polishing and rolling the wear debris resulted in a low friction coefficient (about 0.5).

Tribological Capabilities of Graphene and Titanium Dioxide Nano Additives in Solid and Liquid Base Lubricants

In this study, the tribological behavior of both liquid (oil) and semi-liquid (grease) lubricants enhanced by multilayer graphene nano platelets and titanium dioxide nano powder was evaluated using ball-on-disk and shaft-on-plate tribo-meters. Oil samples for both 2D graphene nano platelets (GNP) and titanium nanopowders (TiNP) were prepared at three concentrations of 0.01 %w/w, 0.05 %w/w and 0.1 %w/w. In addition, 0.05% w/w mixtures of GNP and TiNP were prepared with three different ratios to analyze collective effects of both nano additives on friction and wear properties. For semi-liquid lubricants, 0.5% w/w concentrations were prepared for both nano additives for shaft-on-plate tests. Viscosity and oxidation stability tests were conducted on the liquid-base lubricants. Nano powders of both additive and substrate were analyzed using transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). In addition, Raman spectroscopy was conducted to characterize the graphene and titanium dioxide. The study shows that adding graphene and titanium dioxide individually sacrifices either the wear or friction of lubricants. However, use of both additives together can enhance friction resistance and wear preventive properties of a liquid lubricant significantly. For a semi-liquid lubricant, the use of both additives together and individually reduces friction compared to base grease.

Laser Polishing of Additive Manufactured 316L Stainless Steel Synthesized by Selective Laser Melting

One of the established limitations of metal additive manufacturing (AM) methods, such as selective laser melting (SLM), is the resulting rough surface finish. Laser polishing is one method that can be used to achieve an improved surface finish on AM printed parts. This study is focused on the laser surface polishing of AM parts using CO₂ laser beam irradiation. Despite the fact that several researchers have investigated the traditional abrasive polishing method, there is still a lack of information reporting on the laser surface polishing of metal parts. In this study, AM 316L stainless steel cylindrical samples were polished using CO₂ laser beam irradiation in continuous wave (CW) working mode. Two design of experiment models were developed for the optimization of the input processing parameters by statistical analysis of their effect on the resulting roughness. The processing parameters investigated were the laser beam power, the rotational speed of the sample, the number of laser scan passes, the laser beam focal position, and the percentage overlap of the laser tracks between consecutive passes. The characterization of the measured roughness and the modified layer microstructure was carried out using 3D optical and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). A maximum reduction of the roughness from 10.4 to 2.7 µm was achieved and no significant change in the microstructure phase type and micro-hardness was observed.

The Role of Bainite in Wear and Friction Behavior of Austempered Ductile Iron

The austempered ductile iron was austenitized at 900 °C for 1 h and quenched in an isothermal quenching furnace at 380 °C and 280 °C, respectively. This paper aims to investigate the effects of bainite on wear resistance of austempered ductile iron (ADI) at different loads conditions. The micro-structure and phase composition of ADI was characterized and analyzed by metallographic microscope (OM), X-ray diffractometer (XRD) and scanning electron microscope (SEM) with energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS). The results showed that the volume fraction of retained austenite in ADI is reduced with the increase of austenitizing temperature. Meanwhile, the two kinds of ADI samples showed varied wear resistance when they were worn at different loads conditions. For wearing at a load of 25 N, the wear resistance of ADI mainly depends on matrix micro-hardness. Thus, ADI with lower bainite structure has higher hardness and leads to better wear resistance. When wearing at a load of 100 N, the increase of micro-hardness of upper bainite was significant. As a consequence, upper bainite showed superior friction and wear behavior. It was also found that the form of wear behavior of ADI changed from abrasive wear to fatigue delamination as the wear load increased from 25 N to 100 N according to the observation on worn surface.
