Photoactive Cements: A Review

This article presents a short overview of modified cements with photocatalytic activity. First, the types and three main methods of obtaining photoactive cements are presented. The most frequently used modification method is the incorporation of a photocatalyst into the total mass of the cement. The second group analyzed is cements obtained by applying a thin layer of photoactive materials, e.g., paints, enamels, or TiO₂ suspensions, using various techniques. The third group is cement mortars with a thick layer of photoactive concrete on the top. In addition, methods for determining the photoactivity of cement composites, mechanical properties, and physicochemical parameters of such materials are briefly presented. Finally, examples of investments with the use of photoactive cements and development prospects are shown.

Fe-TiO2/AC and Co-TiO2/AC Composites: Novel Photocatalysts Prepared from Waste Streams for the Efficient Removal and Photocatalytic Degradation of Cibacron Yellow F-4G Dye

Fe-TiO2/AC and Co-TiO2/AC composites were prepared from activated carbon (AC) derived from residues of peanut hulls and TiO2 photocatalyst, electrochemically prepared from titanium scrap, and doped with Fe and Co, respectively. The adsorption capacity and photocatalytic activity of the Fe-TiO2/AC and Co-TiO2/AC composites were studied for removing and degrading Cibacron Yellow F-4G (CYF-4G) from wastewater. Doped ACs were characterized by thermogravimetry (TGA), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), a new X-ray absorption technique (XRA), and elemental analysis (EA). Interesting relationships were found between SEM, XRA, and TGA data and the doped amount of catalyst on ACs. Optimal dye adsorption was found at a pH of 2.0. The CYF-4G adsorption kinetics are followed according to the pseudo-second order model. The experimental data revealed that the Langmuir model fits better than the Freundlich and Temkin models. A decrease in adsorption capacity was observed when the catalyst dope percentage increased. A removal and degradation efficiency of the dye close to 100% was achieved around 120 min. A synergistic adsorption and photocatalytic degradation effect of the Fe-TiO2/AC and Co-TiO2/AC composites could be observed when adsorption experiments were conducted under simulated visible radiation.

Design of Novel Photocatalytic Films for the Protection of Architectural Surfaces via the Incorporation of Green Photocatalysts

In conservation science the demand of multifunctional green materials displaying water repellency, consolidation, resistance to organic pollutants and pigments is constantly increasing. This research developed a green nanocomposite exhibiting photocatalytic, hydrophobic, consolidation and self-cleaning properties. This was achieved by synthesizing a TiO2 photocatalyst enriched with carbon dots (C-dots) and successfully incorporated into a tetraethoxysilane nanocomposite modified with nano-calcium oxalate and polydimethylsiloxane. The TiO2/C-dots that were prepared with a simple, low temperature, cost-effective and large-scale procedure were assessed via analytical and spectroscopic techniques and were resulted in anatase structure ranging in size from 10 to 40 nm. Photooxidation measurements displayed that TiO2/C-dots nanoparticles could photodegrade completely Methyl Orange (MO) under UV and visible irradiation after 120 min. The photocatalytic performance of the nanocomposite with TiO2/C-dots resulted promising under UV after longer irradiation time. The degradation of MO was faster on bulk xerogels containing the TiO2/C-dots than the corresponding ones with TiO2. The treatment of concrete, limestone and lime mortars with the nanocomposite proved to be compatible with the substrates in terms of aesthetical aspects. This study demonstrates encouraging potential for large-scale production of a multifunctional protective composite that offers hydrophobicity, self-cleaning properties and consolidation to architectural surfaces.

Development of Eco-Friendly and Self-Cleaning Lime-Pozzolan Plasters for Bio-Construction and Cultural Heritage

Nowadays, the design and use of multi-functional mortars has increased significantly, with interesting applications in the green building and cultural heritage conservation sectors. A key point for a correct adoption of these innovative materials is their behavior along time and their resistance to the weathering. The objective of this project was to define the performance and durability of innovative mortars, in order to use them correctly and to avoid irreparable damage over time. For the development of this project, lime–metakaolin and hydraulic lime–metakaolin based mortars (hereinafter called A, B), as well as A and B with the addition of nano-TiO2 and perlite (hereinafter referred to as A+, B+), have been tested. The focus of the work was to carry out preliminary tests to evaluate the performance and durability characteristics of these mortars, verifying their behavior over time through exposure to artificial aging cycles, including thermal shock cycles in saline solution aerosols, freeze cycles in vapor aerosol, and aging by heat treatment at high temperatures. Before and after each artificial aging cycle, weight measurements, and macroscopic and microscopic observations were performed in order to evaluate possible structural changes. The characteristics of the mortars were assessed by determination of the apparent volume mass, mechanical properties, such as compressive and bending strength, water absorption, whereas their self-cleaning capacity was measured by methylene blue degradation test under UV and solar irradiation. The results obtained show degradation effects in the mortar samples due to aging after each test, and indicated that mortars with perlite and nano-TiO2 are the best-performing ones, both from the durability and energetic point of view, rendering them suitable for applications in the green building sector and the conservation of cultural heritage.

Olive Leaves as Biotemplates for Enhanced Solar-Light Harvesting by a Titania-Based Solid

Olive leaves (by-product from olive oil production in olive mills) were used as biotemplates to synthesize a titania-based artificial olive leaf (AOL). Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images of AOL showed the successful replication of trichomes and internal structure channels present in olive leaves. The BET surface area of AOL was 52 m²·g^-1. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Raman spectra revealed that the resulting solid was in the predominantly-anatase crystalline form (7.5 nm average particle size). Moreover, the synthesis led to a red-shift in light absorption as compared to reference anatase (gap energies of 2.98 and 3.2 eV, respectively). The presence of surface defects (as evidenced by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, XPS, and electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy, EPR) and doping elements (e.g., 1% nitrogen, observed by elemental analysis and XPS) could account for that. AOL was preliminarily tested as a catalyst for hydrogen production through glycerol photoreforming and exhibited an activity 64% higher than reference material Evonik P25 under solar irradiation and 144% greater under ultraviolet radiation, (under voltage) UV.

Nano-TiO2 in Hydraulic Lime–Metakaolin Mortars for Restoration Projects: Physicochemical and Mechanical Assessment

In recent years, lime mortars mixed with artificial or natural pozzolans are commonly used in restoration applications. The aim of this work is the assessment of carbonation, pozzolanic reaction, setting time, and mechanical properties of metakaolin–lime mortars mixed with crystalline nano-titania (nT) as additive. The studied mortars consist of hydrated lime and metakaolin in 60/40 ratio (wt%) and fine aggregates of either carbonate or silicate sand. The concentration of the nano-titania is equal to 6 (wt%) of the binder. For comparison purposes, three types of mortars and pastes are designed: Without the addition of nano-titania, with nT activated or not under UV irradiation. The evaluation of the carbonation and pozzolanic reaction over a 1.5-year curing period is carried out through thermal analysis (DTA/TG), infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD). The uniaxial compression and the three-point bending tests at 28 days, 3 months, and 6 months were carried out to evaluate mechanical properties. The addition of activated nano-titania, due to an increased photocatalytic activity, accelerated the setting of the mortars, improving at the same time the mechanical properties. The plastic behavior of the lime–metakaolin mortars with activated nT was attributed to the evolution of carbonation and pozzolanic reaction.
