Electrospun Polymeric Nanofibers: Current Trends in Synthesis, Surface Modification, and Biomedical Applications

Electrospun polymeric nanofibers are essential in various fields for various applications because of their unique properties. Their features are similar to extracellular matrices, which suggests them for applications in healthcare fields, such as antimicrobials, tissue engineering, drug delivery, wound healing, bone regeneration, and biosensors. This review focuses on the synthesis of electrospun polymeric nanofibers, their surface modification, and their biomedical applications. Nanofibers can be fabricated from both natural and synthetic polymers and their composites. Even though they mimic extracellular matrices, their surface features (physicochemical characteristics) are not always capable of fulfilling the purpose of the target application. Therefore, they need to be improved via surface modification techniques. Both needle-based and needleless electrospinning are thoroughly discussed. Various techniques and setups employed in each method are also reviewed. Furthermore, pre- and postspinning modification approaches for electrospun nanofibers, including instrument design and the modification features for targeted biomedical applications, are also extensively discussed. In this way, the remarkable potential of electrospun polymeric nanofibers can be highlighted to reveal future research directions in this dynamic field.

Evaluation of the mobility of heavy metals in the sediments originating from the post-galvanic wastewater treatment processes

The article presents the assessment of heavy metals mobility in sediments from the process of galvanic wastewater treatment (pH 2.5, Co 1.5 mg/L, Cr6+  < 0.02 mg/L, Cr(total) 62 mg/L, Cu 110 mg/L, Ni 129 mg/L and Pb 59 mg/L) based on the use of hydroxides (Ca(OH)2, NaOH) as well as inorganic and organic sulphur compounds (Na2S, sodium dimethyldithiocarbamate (DMDTC), sodium trithiocarbonate (Na2CS3), trimercapto-s-triazine trisodium salt, TMT). The leachability was assessed after 1, 7, 14 and 21 days of sediment contact with the leaching agent (deionized water). FeCl3 was used as a coagulant. The efficiency of metal removal changed within a range of 99.67-99.94% (for NaOH), 98.80-99.75% (for TMT), 99.67-99.92% (for DMDTC), 99.67-99.91 (for Na2CS3). The heavy metal content in the obtained precipitates changed within the following ranges: 0.1-0.2 g/kg (Co), 9.8-14.7 g/kg (Cr), 23.6-39.8 g/kg (Cu) 30.5-43.2 g/kg (Ni), 24.3-33.1 g/kg (Pb) and 12.2-18.7 g/kg (Cd). The leachability tests revealed the release of 34-37% of Cd, 6.4-7.5% of Ni and 0.06-0.07% of Cu after using an excess of Na2CS3 as the precipitant. The use of NaOH resulted in the release of 0.42-0.46% of Cr from the sediment, and the use of TMT 0.03-0.34% of Ni. The best immobilization of heavy metals was observed in the case of the precipitate resulting from the use of DMDTC as a precipitating agent. The findings may be useful for predicting the mobility of heavy metals in the sludge and assessing the risk involved so as to support their removal and management.

A High-Performance Anti-Corrosive Epoxy Coating Based on Ultra-Thin Hydroxyapatite Nanosheets with pH-Responsive Functions

The changes in the working environment have necessitated greater requirements in terms of the long-term anti-corrosion ability of metal anti-corrosion coatings, and the emergence of intelligent coatings has met this demand. A nanocontainer with a hydrophobic inner cavity and hydrophilic outer cavity called β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) was grafted onto the surface of hydroxyapatite (HAp) with a silane coupling agent, encapsulating benzotriazole (BTA) and embedded in epoxy resin to improve the coating anticorrosion performance. The excellent corrosion resistance of the coating in immersion and scratch experiments was derived from the inert protective layer formed by the reaction of the rapidly released corrosion inhibitor with the corrosion products on the metal surface. After 30 days of immersion experiment, the coating could still maintain the low-frequency impedance value of 6.28 × 107 Ω cm2. In this work, the enhancement of the physical barrier function of HAp nanoparticle and the pH-response function conferred by β-cyclodextrin provided the coating with good passive and active acting abilities in corrosive environments, respectively.

Nanocomposite Coatings for Anti-Corrosion Properties of Metallic Substrates

Nanocomposites are high-performance materials with exceptional characteristics that possess properties that their individual constituents, by themselves, cannot provide. They have useful applications in many fields, ranging from membrane processes to fuel cells, biomedical devices, and anti-corrosion protection. Well-tailored nanocomposites are promising materials for anti-corrosion coatings on metals and alloys, exhibiting simple barrier protection or even smart auto-responsive and self-healing functionalities. Nanocomposite coatings can be prepared by using a large variety of matrices and reinforcement materials, often acting in synergy. In this context, recent advances in the preparation and characterization of corrosion-resistant nanocomposite coatings based on metallic, polymeric, and ceramic matrices, as well as the incorporation of various reinforcement materials, are reviewed. The review presents the most important materials used as matrices for nanocomposites (metals, polymers, and ceramics), the most popular fillers (nanoparticles, nanotubes, nanowires, nanorods, nanoplatelets, nanosheets, nanofilms, or nanocapsules), and their combinations. Some of the most important characteristics and applications of nanocomposite coatings, as well as the challenges for future research, are briefly discussed.

Self-Healing Mechanical Properties of Selected Roofing Felts

In this work, roof felts are considered. Special attention is paid to the mechanical properties and self-healing (SH) phenomena under elevated temperatures. The results of the heating and strength tests for the entire range of material work, from the first load to sample breaking, are shown with respect to the angle of reinforcement relative to the longitudinal axis of the sample and different ways of breaking the continuity of the material. The influence that the material thickness and modifiers used for the production of the base material have on the obtained results was also pointed out. The meaningful SH strength is reported-from 5% up to 20% of the strength of the undamaged material-which, in perspective, can provide comprehensive knowledge of the optimal use of roofing felts and its proper mathematical modeling.

Cold-Sprayed Composite Metal-Fluoropolymer Coatings for Alloy Protection against Corrosion and Wear

Results of studying the properties of composite fluoropolymer-containing coatings formed by the cold spray (CS) method on the surface of constructional steel are presented. Different ways of protective coating formation are proposed. The composition of coatings was studied using SEM/EDX analysis. The incorporation of super-dispersed polytetrafluoroethylene (SPTFE) into the coating increases the corrosion resistance of the copper-zinc-based cold-sprayed coating. Analysis of the electrochemical properties obtained using EIS (electrochemical impedance spectroscopy) and PDP (potentiodynamic polarization) indicates that samples treated with SPTFE on a base copper-zinc coating showed lower corrosion current density and higher impedance modulus (j_c = 8.5 × 10^-7 A cm^-2, |Z|_{f=0.1 Hz} = 5.3 × 10⁴ Ω∙cm²) than the specimen with cold-sprayed SPTFE (j_c = 6.1 × 10^-6 A cm^-2, |Z|_{f=0.1 Hz} = 8.1 × 10³ Ω∙cm²). The best anticorrosion properties were revealed for the sample with a cold-sprayed base Cu-Zn layer annealed at 500 °C for 1 h, followed by SPTFE friction treatment and re-annealed at 350 °C for 1 h. The corrosion current density j_c of such a coating is 25 times lower than that for the base Cu-Zn coating. The antifriction properties and hydrophobicity of the formed layers are described. Obtained results indicate that cold-sprayed polymer-containing coatings effectively improve the corrosion and wear resistivity of the treated material.

L-Arginine Grafted Chitosan as Corrosion Inhibitor for Mild Steel Protection

Corrosion prevention has been a global phenomenon, particularly in metallic and construction engineering. Most inhibitors are expensive and toxic. Therefore, developing nontoxic and cheap corrosion inhibitors has been a way forward. In this work, L-arginine was successfully grafted on chitosan by the thermal technique using a reflux condenser. This copolymer was characterized by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The corrosion inhibition performance of the composite polymer was tested on mild steel in 0.5M HCl by electrochemical methods. The potentiodynamic polarization (PDP) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) results were consistent. The inhibition efficiency at optimum concentration rose to 91.4%. The quantum chemical calculation parameters show good properties of the material as a corrosion inhibitor. The molecular structure of the inhibitor was subjected to density functional theory (DFT) to understand its theoretical properties, and the results confirmed the inhibition efficiency of the grafted polymer for corrosion prevention.

Experimental and In-Silico Computational Modeling of Cerium Oxide Nanoparticles Functionalized by Gelatin as an Eco-Friendly Anti-Corrosion Barrier on X60 Steel Alloys in Acidic Environments

An eco-friendly and a facile route successfully prepared novel cerium oxide nanoparticles functionalized by gelatin. The introduced CeO₂@gelatin was investigated in terms of FE-SEM, EDX, TEM, chemical mapping, FT-IR, and (TGA) thermal analyses. These characterization tools indicate the successful synthesis of a material having CeO₂ and gelatin as a composite material. The prepared composite CeO₂@gelatin was used as an environment-friendly coated film or X60 steel alloys in acidizing oil well medium. Moreover, the effect of CeO₂ percent on film composition was investigated. LPR corrosion rate, E_ocp-time, EIS, and PDP tools determined the corrosion protection capacity. The CeO₂@gelatin composite exhibited high protection capacity compared to pure gelatin; in particular, 5.0% CeO₂@gelatin coating film shows the highest protection capacity (98.2%), with long-term anti-corrosive features. The % CeO₂@gelatin-coated films formed the protective adsorbed layer on the steel interface by developing a strong bond among nitrogen atoms in the CeO₂@gelatin film and the electrode interface. Surface morphology using FESEM measurements confirmed the high efficiency of the fabricated CeO₂@gelatin composite on the protection X60 steel alloys. DFT calculations and MC simulations were explored to study the relations between the protection action and the molecular construction of the coated systems, which were in good alignment with the empirical findings.

Evaluation of Corrosion Protection of Self-Healing Coatings Containing Tung and Copaiba Oil Microcapsules

The objective of the current research is to evaluate and compare the corrosion protection efficiency of the microcapsules containing tung oil and copaiba oil using stereoscopic images, electrochemical tests, open circuit potential (OCP), and polarization curves (Tafel analysis). Carbon steel plates were painted with three different coating systems: (a) a coating system with an automotive primer which served as the control, (b) a coating system with microcapsules containing 3% tung oil, and (c) a coating system with microcapsules containing 3% copaiba oil. A crosscut was performed using a scalpel on the coating surfaces to promote the release of the oils, and after drying, electrochemical cells were assembled using electrolyte 3% NaCl. From OCP analyses, it was verified that the coating system containing tung oil loaded microcapsules obtained more positive final values than the control system and the coating system containing copaiba oil loaded microcapsules. The stereoscope images corroborate the OCP results, and the polarization curve analyses also indicated that the microcapsules containing tung oil offer better corrosion protection than the other systems studied.

Polyelectrolytes Assembly: A Powerful Tool for Electrochemical Sensing Application

The development of sensing coatings, as important sensor elements that integrate functionality, simplicity, chemical stability, and physical stability, has been shown to play a major role in electrochemical sensing system development trends. Simple and versatile assembling procedures and scalability make polyelectrolytes highly convenient for use in electrochemical sensing applications. Polyelectrolytes are mainly used in electrochemical sensor architectures for entrapping (incorporation, immobilization, etc.) various materials into sensing layers. These materials can often increase sensitivity, selectivity, and electronic communications with the electrode substrate, and they can mediate electron transfer between an analyte and transducer. Analytical performance can be significantly improved by the synergistic effect of materials (sensing material, transducer, and mediator) present in these composites. As most reported methods for the preparation of polyelectrolyte-based sensing layers are layer-by-layer and casting/coating methods, this review focuses on the use of the latter methods in the development of electrochemical sensors within the last decade. In contrast to many reviews related to electrochemical sensors that feature polyelectrolytes, this review is focused on architectures of sensing layers and the role of polyelectrolytes in the development of sensing systems. Additionally, the role of polyelectrolytes in the preparation and modification of various nanoparticles, nanoprobes, reporter probes, nanobeads, etc. that are used in electrochemical sensing systems is also reviewed.

Hybrid Sol-gel Coatings for Corrosion Mitigation: A Critical Review

The corrosion process is a major source of metallic material degradation, particularly in aggressive environments, such as marine ones. Corrosion progression affects the service life of a given metallic structure, which may end in structural failure, leakage, product loss and environmental pollution linked to large financial costs. According to NACE, the annual cost of corrosion worldwide was estimated, in 2016, to be around 3%-4% of the world's gross domestic product. Therefore, the use of methodologies for corrosion mitigation are extremely important. The approaches used can be passive or active. A passive approach is preventive and may be achieved by emplacing a barrier layer, such as a coating that hinders the contact of the metallic substrate with the aggressive environment. An active approach is generally employed when the corrosion is set in. That seeks to reduce the corrosion rate when the protective barrier is already damaged and the aggressive species (i.e., corrosive agents) are in contact with the metallic substrate. In this case, this is more a remediation methodology than a preventive action, such as the use of coatings. The sol-gel synthesis process, over the past few decades, gained remarkable importance in diverse areas of application. Sol-gel allows the combination of inorganic and organic materials in a single-phase and has led to the development of organic-inorganic hybrid (OIH) coatings for several applications, including for corrosion mitigation. This manuscript succinctly reviews the fundamentals of sol-gel concepts and the parameters that influence the processing techniques. The state-of-the-art of the OIH sol-gel coatings reported in the last few years for corrosion protection, are also assessed. Lastly, a brief perspective on the limitations, standing challenges and future perspectives of the field are critically discussed.

Preparation and Characterization of Ethylenediamine-Polyurea Microcapsule Epoxy Self-Healing Coating

Polyurea microcapsules with Ethylenediamine (EDA) as the core material were synthesized. A set of characterization methods, including optical and scanning electron microscopy (OM and SEM), the Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) were used to confirm the microcapsule morphology and chemical structures. The influence of emulsifier content and stirring rate on size and morphology of the microcapsules was investigated, and the self-healing performance of EDA-Polyurea microcapsule/epoxy coatings was evaluated by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) measurements. The results showed that the microcapsules obtained had good spherical shape with a mean diameter of 0.54–0.70 μm. Compared with pure core material, the microcapsule showed excellent thermostability, and the content of core materials was up to 56.00 wt%. The epoxy coating with 5.0 wt% EDA-Polyurea microcapsules achieved average corrosion resistance efficiencies of 90.00%, significantly enhancing the capability of the scratched coating to resist external corrosion.
