Waterborne Intumescent Fire-Retardant Polymer Composite Coatings: A Review

Intumescent fire-retardant coatings, which feature thinner layers and good decorative effects while significantly reducing heat transfer and air dispersion capabilities, are highly attractive for fire safety applications due to their effective prevention of material combustion and protection of materials. Particularly, the worldwide demand for improved environmental protection requirements has given rise to the production of waterborne intumescent fire-retardant polymer composite coatings, which are comparable to or provide more advantages than solvent-based intumescent fire-retardant polymer composite coatings in terms of low cost, reduced odor, and minimal environmental and health hazards. However, there is still a lack of a comprehensive and in-depth overview of waterborne intumescent fire-retardant polymer composite coatings. This review aims to systematically and comprehensively discuss the composition, the flame retardant and heat insulation mechanisms, and the practical applications of waterborne intumescent fire-retardant polymer composite coatings. Finally, some key challenges associated with waterborne intumescent fire-retardant polymer composite coatings are highlighted, following which future perspectives and opportunities are proposed.

Influence of the Type of Soft Segment on the Selected Properties of Polyurethane Materials for Biomedical Applications

This work presents the synthesis and characterization of new TPUs obtained by melt polyaddition using 1,1'-methanediylbis(4-isocyanatocyclohexane) (HMDI, Desmodur W®), a new unconventional chain extender, i.e., (methanediyldibenze-ne-4,1-diyl)dimethanediol, and five types of soft segments differing in structure and molar masses. The structure of the obtained polymers was determined (by using the Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction methods), and the physicochemical (reduced viscosity, density), optical (UV-VIS), processing (MFR) and thermal (DSC and TGA-FTIR) as well as surface, antibacterial and cytotoxic properties were determined. Based on the results obtained, it can be stated that the type of soft segment used significantly affects the properties of the obtained polymers. The most favorable properties for use in medicine were demonstrated by materials based on a polycarbonate soft segment.

The Influence of Diisocyanate Structure on Thermal Stability of Thermoplastic Polyurethane Elastomers Based on Diphenylmethane-Derivative Chain Extender with Sulfur Atoms

The work is a continuation of the research on thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) elastomers containing sulfur atoms which are incorporated into the polyurethane chain using aliphatic-aromatic chain extenders. These materials show some improved properties in relation to conventional ones, e.g., adhesion to metals, bacterial resistance and refractive index. The present study deals with the detailed characteristics of the process of thermal decomposition of TPU elastomers obtained from 2,2'-[methylenebis(1,4-phenylenemethylenethio)]diethanol, 1,1'-methanediylbis(4-isocyanatobenzene) (MDI) or 1,6-diisocyanatohexane (HDI) and poly(oxytetramethylene) diol of M_n = 2000 g/mol by thermogravimetric analysis coupled on-line with Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The analysis was performed under inert and oxidative conditions. All TPU elastomers were found to have a relatively good thermal stability, with those based on aromatic diisocyanate being at an advantage. In helium, they are stable up to 280-282 °C (from HDI) and 299-301 °C (from MDI), whereas in synthetic air up to 252-265 °C (from HDI) and 261-272 °C (from MDI), as measured by the temperature of 1% mass loss. Depending on the content of the hard segments and the tested atmosphere, the TPU elastomers decompose from one to four stages. From the analysis of the volatile decomposition products, it follows that the decomposition of both types of hard segments was accompanied by the evolution of carbonyl sulfide, carbon dioxide, water, sulfide dioxide, alcohols and aromatic compounds. For the hard segment derived from HDI, isocyanates, amines, and unsaturated compounds were also identified, while for the MDI-derived one, aldehydes were discovered. In turn, the polyether soft segment decomposed mainly into aliphatic ethers, aldehydes, and carbon monoxide.

Study and Characterization of Regenerated Hard Foam Prepared by Polyol Hydrolysis of Waste Polyurethane

In this paper, four different kinds of diols were used for the alcoholysis of waste thermoplastic polyurethane elastomers. The recycled polyether polyols were used to prepare regenerated thermosetting polyurethane rigid foam through one-step foaming. We used four different kinds of alcoholysis agents, according to different proportions of the complex, and we combined them with an alkali metal catalyst (KOH) to trigger the catalytic cleavage of the carbamate bonds in the waste polyurethane elastomers. The effects of the different types and different chain lengths of the alcoholysis agents on the degradation of the waste polyurethane elastomers and the preparation of regenerated polyurethane rigid foam were studied. Based on the viscosity, GPC, FT-IR, foaming time and compression strength, water absorption, TG, apparent density, and thermal conductivity of the recycled polyurethane foam, eight groups of optimal components were selected and discussed. The results showed that the viscosity of the recovered biodegradable materials was between 485 and 1200 mPa·s. The hard foam of the regenerated polyurethane was prepared using biodegradable materials instead of commercially available polyether polyols, and its compressive strength was between 0.131 and 0.176 MPa. The water absorption rate ranged from 0.7265 to 1.9923%. The apparent density of the foam was between 0.0303 and 0.0403 kg/m3. The thermal conductivity ranged from 0.0151 to 0.0202 W/(m·K). A large number of experimental results showed that the degradation of the waste polyurethane elastomers by the alcoholysis agents was successful. The thermoplastic polyurethane elastomers can not only be reconstructed, but they can also be degraded by alcoholysis to produce regenerated polyurethane rigid foam.

Effect of Aromatic Chain Extenders on Polyurea and Polyurethane Coatings Designed for Defense Applications

The present work describes the synthesis of new versatile polyurea (PU) and polyurethane (PUR) matrices, including different chain extenders, which facilitate the design of distinct, tunable properties, and high-performance derivatives. These polymers can be used for various defense and security applications, such as coatings for ballistic protection, CBRN protection, binders for energetic formulations, etc. Combining aliphatic and aromatic molecules in PU or PUR structures enables the synthesis of polymers with improved and controllable thermo-mechanical properties. Thus, for polyurea synthesis, we utilized two types of polymeric aliphatic diamines and three types of aromatic chain extenders (1,1'-biphenyl-4,4'-diamine, benzene-1,2-diamine, and 1,2-diphenylhydrazine). An analogous method was used to synthesize polyurethane films by employing one polymeric aliphatic polyol and three types of aromatic chain extenders (benzene-1,3-diol, benzene-1,4-diol, and benzene-1,2,3-triol). Subsequently, various analytic techniques (Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy-attenuated total reflectance (FTIR-ATR), single cantilever dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), frequency-dependent shear modulus survey, tensile tests, water contact angle measurements, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) with energy-dispersive X-ray analysis (EDX)) have been utilized to characterize the synthesized materials and to evaluate the influence of each chain extender on their final properties.

New Segmented Poly(Thiourethane-Urethane)s Based on Poly(ε-Caprolactone)Diol Soft Segment: Synthesis and Characterization

New segmented poly(thiourethane-urethane)s (SPTURs) were synthesized by the reaction of 1,1'-methanediylbis (4-isocyanatocyclohexane) (Desmodur W®, HMDI) and poly(ε-caprolactone)diol (PCL) and (methanediyldibenzene-4,1-diyl)dimethanethiol as nonconventional polymer chain extender. FTIR spectroscopy was used for the structural analysis of obtained polymers. The molecular weight distribution was examined by GPC chromatography. Based on the measured contact angles, free surface energy parameters were calculated. Thermal properties of polymers were examined by DSC and TGA, while viscoelastic properties were measured by DMTA. The tensile, adhesive and optical properties were also investigated for the obtained polymers. It was shown that SPTURs were transparent or partially transparent solids with high molar masses up to 84,300 Da. These polymers showed a good resistance to hydrolysis during incubation in Optylite® physiological saline over 8 weeks. Obtained polymers possessed a tensile strength of up to 43.26 MPa, hardness of up to 96.25/59.00 Sh A/D and adhesion to copper of 14.66 MPa. The surface properties of the obtained polymers show that all obtained SPTURs were hydrophilic (CAs for water between 64.07° and 73.12°) with calculated SFE up to 46.69 mN/m.

Preparation of Nonlethal Projectiles by Polyurethane Foam with the Dynamic and Microscopic Characterization for Risk Assessment and Management

Nonlethal projectiles are manufactured and designed proportionately, with a minimal likelihood of mortality or harm. However, numerous real-world examples indicate that nonlethal projectiles can potentially inflict severe lesions and death in some circumstances. As a result, it is essential to design and manage the manufacture of projectile materials to achieve maximum efficacy with the least amount of collateral damage. The current paper provides a technique for generating and analyzing filled polyurethane (PU) foams and studying their viscoelastic characteristics. The sand and graphite composition ranged between 5 and 10% by weight. The suggested technique seeks to exert control over the evolution of the microstructure. The mechanical characteristics were obtained by dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) testing. We made a pneumatic launcher and a sturdy rigid wall. In addition, the artificial human head is covered with force sensors to perform dynamic characterization. Also, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) of the polyurethane foam cross sections demonstrated that the average cell size of 98 μm was unaffected by the fillings' content. Furthermore, X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD) characterized the developmental foams' physicochemical properties. Finally, we assessed the dynamic search for nonlethal projectiles. We recorded the viscous criteria (VCmax) values to check for nonlethal projectiles.
