Synthetic, Mesomorphic, and DFT Investigations of New Nematogenic Polar Naphthyl Benzoate Ester Derivatives

Functionalization Strategies for Electropolishing Process of Carbon Steel Using Novel Quinazoline-4-one Derivatives: Synthesis, Spectroscopic Characterization, and DFT Studies

A novel class of organic electropolishing (EP) inhibitors, entitled quinazoline-4-one derivatives (benzylidene oxoquinazolineyl acetohydrazide (BOA)), has laid a solid foundation for the creation of a new efficient inhibitor platform for the dissolution of carbon steel (C-steel) in 8 M H3PO4. Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR), 1H NMR, and elemental analyses have all been employed to identify BOA's functional groups, components, and active centers. The inhibition strength of BOA derivatives (m-NBOA, p-HBOA, and p-BBOA) on C-steel was assured by galvanostatic polarization measurements. Within the range of concentrations (0.33-3.43 × 10-3 mol/L) and temperatures (298-313 K) evaluated, the tested derivatives exhibit extraordinarily high gloss and low roughness, and improved the corrosion resistance of the electropolished surface with the lowest negative environmental impact. The dissolution rate (IL) decreases with increasing BOA concentration, supporting a mass transport-controlled technique and demonstrating that BOA is appropriate for anodic inhibitors. Activation energy indicates physical adsorption. Thermodynamic parameters were calculated for further investigation of the heat involved and the mechanism of the EP process. Adsorption isotherm and adsorption thermodynamics parameters were discussed using three models: Langmuir, Flory-Huggins, and kinetic adsorption isotherms, to study the inhibition of EP of the steel surface. The free energy of adsorption was calculated to assert the physisorption process. A scanning electron microscope (SEM) was utilized to inspect the morphology of the metal surface before and after the inclusion of BOA under different conditions. In contrast, the surface roughness was identified using an atomic force microscope (AFM) and reflectance. Eventually, practical results have been proved through computational calculations using the LYP correlation functional by the density functional theory (DFT) method.

Synthesis of New Liquid-Crystalline Compounds Based on Terminal Benzyloxy Group: Characterization, DFT and Mesomorphic Properties

The effect of the terminal benzyloxy group on the mesomorphic properties of liquid crystalline materials developed from rod-like Schiff base has been described. For this objective, a novel Schiff base liquid crystal family, specifically new series of Schiff base liquid crystals, namely, (E)-4-(alkyloxy)-N-(4-(benzyloxy)benzylidene)aniline, I_n, are prepared and investigated in detail. The length of the terminal alkyloxy chain (n) varies amongst the compounds in the series. Where n varies between 6, 8 and 16 carbons. At the other end of the compounds, benzyloxy moiety was attached. The molecular structures of all synthesized compounds were established using different spectroscopic techniques. The molecular self-assembly was explored using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and polarized optical microscope (POM). Depending on the length of the terminal alkyloxy chain, only one type of SmA phase with different stability was observed. The previously reported para-substituted systems and the present investigated compounds were compared and discussed. The calculated quantum chemical parameters were computationally correlated using the DFT method via the B3LYP 6-311G(d,p) basis set. The theoretical computations revealed that the length of the alkyl side chain influences the zero-point energy, reactivity and other estimated thermodynamic parameters of benzoyloxy/azomethine derivatives. Furthermore, the FMO energy analysis shows that molecule I₁₆ have higher HOMO energies than the other compounds, and I₆ has a much lower LUMO level than the rest.

Synthesis and characterization of new imine liquid crystals based on terminal perfluoroalkyl group

New organic derivatives named, (E)-3(or4) -(alkyloxy)-N-{(trifluoromethyl)benzylidene}aniline, 1a-f, were synthesized and examined their liquid crystalline behaviors. FT-IR, ¹H NMR, ¹³C NMR, ¹⁹F NMR, elemental analyses and GCMS were used to validate the prepared compounds' chemical structures. We used differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and polarized optical microscopy (POM) to investigate the mesomorphic characteristics of the formed Schiff bases. All tested compounds of series 1a-c have mesomorphic behaviour of nematogenic temperature ranges while the group 1d-f show non-mesomorphic properties. Moreover, it was found that the enantiotropic N phases included all of the homologue 1a-c. Computational studies using DFT (density functional theory) validated the experimental mesomorphic behavior results. All the analyzed compounds had their dipole moments, polarizability, and reactivity characteristics explained. Theoretical simulations showed that as the length of the terminal chain is increased, the polarizability of the stuided compounds increases. Consequently, compounds 1a and 1d have the least polarizability.

Mesomorphic, Computational Investigations and Dyeing Applications of Laterally Substituted Dyes

Two groups of laterally substituted non-mesomorphic and liquid crystalline materials bearing monoazo group were prepared and investigated via experimental and theoretical techniques. The molecular structures of the designed dyes were evaluated by FT-IR and NMR spectroscopic analyses. Mesomorphic examinations for all synthesized dyes were investigated by polarized optical microscopy (POM) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Results revealed that, the thermal and optical properties of investigated compounds are mainly dependent on their molecular geometry. The optimized geometries of the azo derivatives and their electronic absorption of the dyes were carried out using the B3LYP/6-311G level of the DFT method. The azo dyes were measured for their dyeing performance on polyester fabrics. The dyed fabrics have excellent fastness properties with a color strength of 1.49-3.43 and an exhaustion rate of 82-64%. The chemical descriptor parameters of disperse azo dyes in gas phase were calculated and correlated with dyeing parameters.

New Advanced Liquid Crystalline Materials Bearing Bis-Azomethine as Central Spacer

In this study, a homologous series of novel liquid crystalline compounds bearing the bis-azomethine central linkage (–CH=N-N=CH–), namely ((1E,1′E)-hydrazine-1,2-diylidenebis(methanylylidene))bis(4,1-phenylene) dialkanoate (In), was synthesized, and the mesophase and thermal properties were investigated theoretically and experimentally. The molecular structures of the prepared compounds were determined using elemental analysis, NMR, and FT-IR spectroscopy. The mesophase transitions were detected by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and the mesophases were identified using polarized optical microscopy (POM). The results indicated that the derivative with the shortest length (I5) was purely nematogenic, while the other homologues (I9 and I15) possessed SmC mesophases. The optimal geometrical structures of the investigated group were derived theoretically. The estimated results demonstrated that all homologues were mesomorphic, and their type depended on the length of the terminal chains. Computations based on density functional theory (DFT) were used to explain the experimental data. The calculated dipole moment, polarizability, thermal energy, and molecular electrostatic potential all showed that it was possible to predict the mesophase type and stability, which varied according to the size of the molecule.

New Self-Organizing Optical Materials and Induced Polymorphic Phases of Their Mixtures Targeted for Energy Investigations

Herein, a new homologues series of fluorinated liquid crystal compounds, In, 4-(((4-fluorophenyl)imino)methyl)-2-methoxyphenyl 4-alkoxybenzoate were synthesized and its mesomorphic properties were investigated both experimentally and theoretically. The synthesized compounds were characterized by elemental analyzer, NMR, and FT-IR spectroscopy to deduce the molecular structures. The differential scanning calorimetry was employed to examine mesophase transitions whereas the polarized optical microscopy was used to identify the mesophases. The obtained results revealed that the purely nematic phase observed in all terminal side chains. All homologues showed to possess monotropic nematic mesophases except the derivative I8 exhibits enantiotropic property. The optimized geometrical structures of the present designed groups have been derived theoretically. The experimental data was explained using density functional theory computations. The estimated values of dipole moment, polarizability, thermal energy, and molecule electrostatic potential demonstrated that the mesophase stability and type could be illustrated. Binary phase diagram was constructed and addressed in terms of the mesomorphic temperature range and obtained polymorphic phases. It was found that incorporation of the terminal F-atom and lateral CH3O group influence both conformation and steric effect in pure and mixed states. The absorption and fluorescence emission spectra of fabricated films were recorded to elucidate the impact of terminal side chain on photophysical properties of synthesized liquid crystal. It was noted that the increase of terminal side chain length lead to reduction of optical band gap, whereas charge carrier lifetime increases.

Synthesis, Phase Behavior and Computational Simulations of a Pyridyl-Based Liquid Crystal System

A homologous set of liquid crystalline materials (Tn) bearing Schiff base/ester linkages were prepared and investigated via experimental and theoretical techniques. Terminal flexible groups of different chain lengths were connected to the end of phenylbenzoate unit while the other end of molecules was attached to the heterocyclic pyridine moiety. The molecular structures of the designed molecules were evaluated by FT-IR, NMR spectroscopic analyses, whereas their mesomorphic properties were investigated by polarized optical microscopy (POM) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). They all exhibited dimorphic properties with the exception of the members having the shortest and longest terminal flexible chains (n = 6 and 16), which were monomorphic. The T16 derivative was further found possessing purely smectic A (SmA) mesophase while others have their lengths covered by nematic (N) phase. Moreover, the computational evaluation of the azomethine derivatives was carried out using a DFT approach. The polarity of the investigated derivatives was predicted to be appreciably sensitive to the size of the system. Furthermore, the Frontier molecular orbitals analysis revealed various distributions of electron clouds at HOMO and LUMO levels.

New nematogenic conical-shaped supramolecular H-bonded complexes for solar energy investigations

New conical-shaped geometrical supramolecular H-bonded liquid crystal complexes were formed through 1:2 intermolecular interactions of H-bonding between flexible core (adipic acid, A) and lateral chloro-substituted azopyridines (Bn). The chains of the terminally alkoxy substituted base (n) were changed between 8 and 16 carbons. Mesomorphic and optical examinations of the prepared complexes were measured via differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and polarizing optical microscopy (POM). Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) was used to confirm the Fermi bands of the H- bonding interactions. Induced nematogenic mesophases that cover the whole lengths of alkoxy-chains were detected. The non-linear geometries of the designed supramolecular complexes were also confirmed via Density functional theory (DFT) calculations. It was found that the length of terminal alkoxy chain of the base moiety highly affects the geometrical structure of the investigated complexes. Moreover, it increases the thermodynamic energy and influences the geometrical parameters. The electrical properties of each of the acid component (A), the base (B16) and their 1:2 complex (A/2B16) were evaluated using the Keithley measurement-source unit. The optical properties studies showed that the influences in the optical absorption and the reduction of the energy gap of the complex compared to its individual components made the resulted supramolecular H-bonded complex soft material suitable for solar energy investigations.

Induced Smectic Phases from Supramolecular H-Bonded Complexes Based on Non-Mesomorphic Components

New non-symmetrical 1:1 supramolecular H-bonded (SMHB) interactions, Ix/II, were designed between the non-mesomorphic fatty acids (palmitic, oleic and linoleic acids) and 4-tetradecyloxyphenylazo pyridine. Mesophase behaviors of the formed complexes were examined via differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and polarizing optical microscopy (POM). In order to confirm the H-bond interaction formations within the prepared SMHB complexes, FT-IR spectroscopy was established whereby Fermi bands confirm these interactions. Mesomorphic investigations for all complexes indicated that, independent of the terminal alkenyl chains of the natural acids, induced dimorphic smectic phases were observed. The stability of formed mesophases was found to depend on the degree of un-saturation of the terminal alkenyl group of acid component.

Induced Nematic Phase of New Synthesized Laterally Fluorinated Azo/Ester Derivatives

A new series of laterally fluorinated mesomorphic compounds, namely 2-fluoro-4-((4-(alkyloxy)phenyl)diazenyl)phenyl 4-substitutedbenzoate (Inx) were prepared and evaluated for their mesophase behavior. The synthesized series constitutes five members that possess different terminally attached polar groups (X). Their molecular structures were confirmed by elemental analyses and both FT-IR and NMR spectroscopy. Examination of the prepared derivatives was conducted via experimental and theoretical tools. Mesomorphic investigations were carried by polarized optical microscopy (POM) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). DSC and POM measurements indicated that except for the un-substituted analogue, all other derivatives were purely nematogenic, possessing their nematic (N) mesophase enantiotropically. This is to say that insertions of terminal polar substituents on their mesogenic structures induced the N phase. In addition, the location of lateral and terminal polar moieties played a considerable role in achieving good thermal N stability. Computational calculations were investigated to determine the deduced optimized molecular structures. Theoretical data indicated that both size and polarity of the terminal substituent (X) have essential impact on the thermal parameters and optical properties of possible geometries.

Effect of the Relative Positions of Di-Laterally Substituted Schiff Base Derivatives: Phase Transition and Computational Investigations

Two new laterally di-substituted derivatives namely, (E)-4-(((2-Chlorophenyl)imino)methyl)-3-methoxyphenyl 4-(alkoxy)benzoate, were designed and investigated for their mesomorphic properties. Elucidation of their molecular structures was carried out by elemental analyses, NMR and FT-IR, spectroscopy. Phase transitions were examined by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and polarized optical microscopy (POM). The optimized geometrical architectures of both compounds were deduced theoretically using GAUSSIAN 09 program. In order to establish the most probable conformation for each compound, four probable conformations were predicted for their positional isomers which vary according to the orientations of the two lateral groups. The results were used to correlate the experimental measurements with the predicted conformations. The study revealed that the investigated derivatives are non-mesomorphic and the orientations, as well as positions of the two-lateral groups, have a significant effect on the molecular packing of the molecules, their geometrical and thermal parameters.

Synthesis, Optical Characterizations and Solar Energy Applications of New Schiff Base Materials

A new set of laterally OCH₃-substituted photoactive liquid crystalline analogues, 4-hexyloxy phenyl- imino-4ʹ-(3-methoxyphenyl)-4ʹ’-alkoxybenzoates, were synthesized and investigated for their mesomorphic behavior. The prepared set constitutes five analogues that differ from each other by the terminally attached compact polar group. Characterization of the synthesized derivatives is conducted using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), polarized optical microscopy (POM), and UV-spectroscopy. Molecular structures were elucidated by elemental analyses, FT-IR and NMR spectroscopy. DSC and POM investigations indicated that all the prepared derivatives are monomorphic possessing the nematic (N) phase, except for the unsubstituted derivative that is nonmesomorphic. On the other side, the photophysical study and the optical spectra measurements confirm the photoactivity of the present compounds under UV/visible irradiation. The measured optical spectra showed impressive enhancement in the optical absorption and reduction in the optical bandgap from 3.63 to 3.0 eV depending on the terminal group. From the study of the DC electric properties, the lowest resistance, 106.5 GΩ at scan rate 0.1 V/s, was observed for the I6_d film with Cl terminal, which decreased to 49.5 GΩ by increasing the scan rate to 0.5 V/s. Moreover, the electrical conductance is decreased from 9.39 pS to 1.35 pS at scan rate 0.1 V/s by changing the terminal group from Cl to F. The enhanced optical absorption and the reduced energy gap make the optimized samples suitable material for solar energy applications.

Synthesis, Optical and DFT Characterizations of Laterally Fluorinated Phenyl Cinnamate Liquid Crystal Non-Symmetric System

A new laterally fluorinated unsymmetric liquid crystalline homologous series, based on cinnamate linkage, named 2-fluoro-4-(4-(alkoxy)phenyl)diazenyl)phenyl cinnamate (In), was synthesized and evaluated via different experimental and computational tools. The series had different terminal alkoxy-chain lengths with a lateral F atom in the meta position with respect to the azo moiety. The experimental mesomorphic and optical investigations were carried out using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and polarized optical microscopy (POM). Theoretical calculations and geometrical parameter predictions were conducted using the DFT program method at B3LYP/6-311G** level of theory. The results revealed that all the designed compounds exhibited the nematic (N) mesophase enantiotropically. The nematic stability and temperature range were impacted by the terminal alkoxy chain length. Compounds with the shortest chains (I6 and I8) showed a monotropic smectic A (SmA) phase, while the longest chain derivative, I16, possessed enantiotropic Sm A phase. Theoretical density functional theory (DFT) predictions were correlated with the practically observed data from the mesomorphic investigations. Data revealed that the terminal alkoxy and lateral F groups had an essential impact on the total energy of possible geometrical structures and their physical and thermal parameters.

Optical and Thermal Investigations of New Schiff Base/Ester Systems in Pure and Mixed States

New mesomorphic series, 4-hexadecyloxy phenyl-imino-4'-(3-methoxyphenyl)-4″-alkoxybenzoates (An), were prepared and investigated with different thermal and mesomorphic techniques. The synthesized homologous series constitutes four members that differ from each other in the terminal length of flexible chain (n) attached to phenyl ester moiety, which varies between n = 6, 8, 10, and 12 carbons. A lateral CH3O group is attached to the central benzene ring in the meta position with respect to the ester moiety. Molecular structures of all newly prepared homologues were elucidated via FT-IR, 1H and 13C NMR spectroscopy. Mesomorphic and thermal properties were examined by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and the mesophases identified by polarized optical microscopy (POM). DSC and POM examinations revealed that all members of the present series (An) exhibit a purely enantiotropic nematic (N) phase. Comparative evaluations and binary phase diagrams were established between the present homologues and their corresponding shorter one (Bn). The examination revealed that, the length of the flexible alkoxy chain incorporated into the phenylimino moiety is highly effective on the temperature range and stability of the mesophase observed. With respect to the binary mixtures An/Bn, the exhibited N phase showed to cover the whole composition range with eutectic behavior.

Novel sulphonic acid liquid crystal derivatives: experimental, computational and optoelectrical characterizations

A novel liquid crystal homologous series based on the benzene sulphonic acid moiety, namely (E)-4-((4-((4-(alkoxy)benzoyl)oxy)benzylidene)amino)benzenesulfonic acid (Sn), was synthesized and examined via different experimental and theoretical measurements. The four synthesized members have terminally connected alkoxy chain groups, which vary between 6 and 12 carbons. FT-IR and NMR spectroscopy, as well as elemental analyses, were used to confirm their molecular structures. Mesomorphic and optical investigations of the prepared homologues were also conducted using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and polarized optical microscopy (POM). The DSC and POM characterization revealed that all of the synthesized sulphonic acid members are monomorphic, exhibiting a pure smectic A (SmA) mesophase with enantiotropic properties. Moreover, all compounds in the group have high thermal transition temperatures. The terminal electron-withdrawing group –SO₃H plays a considerable role in the stabilization of the molecule, which in return resulted in high thermal SmA stability. Furthermore, the experimental data relating to the mesophase behavior were substantiated via computational studies using the DFT approach. In addition, the terminal –SO₃H moiety has an essential impact on the thermal and physical parameters of possible geometries. All members of the synthesized Sn series exhibit ohmic behavior with electrical resistance in the GΩ range, as revealed by electrical measurements. The S10 electrode had the highest electrical conductivity: 35.16 pS. It also showed two direct optical band gaps of 3.58 and 3.23 eV with Urbach energies of 1261.1 and 502.4 meV. Upon decreasing the number of carbon atoms to n = 6, the main bandgap for S6 reduced to 3.3 eV. The highest conductivity, good absorption, and two large bandgaps recorded for the chain derivative S10 make it suitable for investigations relating to energy-based applications.
