Abstract
The chemical composition of wine samples comprises numerous bioactive compounds responsible for unique flavor and health-promoting properties. Thus, it's important to have a complete overview of the metabolic profile of new wine products in order to obtain peculiar information in terms of their phytochemical composition, quality, and traceability. To achieve this aim, in this work, a mass spectrometry-based phytochemical screening was performed on seven new wine products from Villa D'Agri in the Basilicata region (Italy), i.e., Aglianico Bianco, Plavina, Guisana, Giosana, Malvasia ad acino piccolo, Colata Murro and Santa Sofia. Ultra-high-resolution mass spectrometry data were processed into absorption mode FT-ICR mass spectra, in order to remove artifacts and achieve a higher resolution and lower levels of noise. Accurate mass-to-charge ratio (m/z) values were converted into putative elemental formulas. Therefore, 2D van Krevelen diagrams were used as a tool to obtain molecular formula maps useful to perform a rapid and more comprehensive analysis of the wine sample metabolome. The presence of important metabolite classes, i.e., fatty acid derivatives, amino acids and peptides, carbohydrates and phenolic derivatives, was assessed. Moreover, the comparison of obtained metabolomic maps revealed some differences among profiles, suggesting their employment as metabolic fingerprints. This study shed some light on the metabolic composition of seven new Italian wine varieties, improving their value in terms of related bioactive compound content. Moreover, different metabolomic fingerprints were obtained for each of them, suggesting the use of molecular maps as innovative tool to ascertain their unique metabolic profile.

Abstract
The aim of the present study was to develop a rapid, simple and reliable method for the identification and quantification of six mycotoxins in wine using liquid chromatography with electrospray ionization tandem mass spectrometry. The analytical method was fully validated, and calibration curves were made with correlation coefficients >0.9970. A short analysis time and acceptable extraction efficiency were achieved by a direct extraction method of analytes (ochratoxin A, aflatoxin B1, B2, G1, G2 and Zearalenone) with acetonitrile. LOD values were from 0.03 to 0.27 μg kg−1, and LOQ values were from 0.08 to 0.81 μg kg−1, with recoveries at various values from 77 to 108%. The expanded uncertainty was 5–21% expressed at a coverage level of k = 2, at a confidence level of approximately 95%. The performance criteria of the method were fully met according to European legislation (EC) 401/2006. The method was successfully applied to wine samples from Cyprus. The method was simple, low cost, quick, accurate, and sensitive.

Abstract
Few scientific reports have suggested the possibility of using natural phenolic acids as functional substances, such as stabilizers for polymeric materials. The replacement of commercial stabilizers in the polymer industry can be beneficial to human health and the environment. The aim of this study was to obtain biodegradable composition of polylactide (PLA) and polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA) with natural amber (succinic) acid. The materials were subjected to controlled thermooxidation and solar aging. The research methodology included thermal analysis, examination of surface energy, mechanical properties and spectrophotometric analysis of the color change after aging. The samples of aliphatic polyesters containing from 1 to 2 parts by weight of succinic acid were characterized by increased resistance to oxidation (DSC analysis). Natural acid, preferably at a concentration of 1–1.5 parts by weight, acted as a stabilizer in the polymer compositions. On the other hand, materials that had amber acid above 2 parts by weight added were more susceptible to oxidation (DSC). They also showed the lowest aging coefficients (K). The addition of acid at 2.5–4 parts by weight caused a pro-oxidative effect and accelerated aging. By adding amber acid to PLA and PHA, it is possible to design their time in service and their overall lifetime.

Abstract
(1) Background: polyphenols are a broad class of molecules extracted from plants and have a large repertoire of biological activities. Biomimetic inspiration from the effects of tea or red wine on the surface of cups or glass lead to the emergence of versatile surface chemistry with polyphenols. Owing to their hydrogen bonding abilities, coordination chemistry with metallic cations and redox properties, polyphenols are able to interact, covalently or not, with a large repertoire of chemical moieties, and can hence be used to modify the surface chemistry of almost all classes of materials. (2) Methods: the use of polyphenols to modify the surface properties of dental materials, mostly enamel and dentin, to afford them with better adhesion to resins and improved biological properties, such as antimicrobial activity, started more than 20 years ago, but no general overview has been written to our knowledge. (3) Results: the present review is aimed to show that molecules from all the major classes of polyphenolics allow for low coast improvements of dental materials and engineering of dental tissues.

Abstract
The natural process of aging gradually causes changes in living organisms, leading to the deterioration of organs, tissues, and cells. In the case of osteoarthritis (OA), the degradation of cartilage is a result of both mechanical stress and biochemical factors. Natural products have already been evaluated for their potential role in the prevention and treatment of OA, providing a safe and effective adjunctive therapeutic approach. This review aimed to assess the therapeutic potential of natural products and their derivatives in osteoarthritis via a systematic search of literature after 2008, including in vitro, in vivo, ex vivo, and animal models, along with clinical trials and meta-analysis. Overall, 170 papers were obtained and screened. Here, we presented findings referring to the preventative and therapeutic potential of 17 natural products and 14 naturally occurring compounds, underlining, when available, the mechanisms implicated. The nature of OA calls to initially focus on the management of symptoms, and, in that context, several naturally occurring compounds have been utilized. Underlying a global need for more sustainable natural sources for treatment, the evidence supporting their chondroprotective potential is still building up. However, arriving at that kind of solution requires more clinical research, targeting the implications of long-term treatment, adverse effects, and epigenetic implications.

Abstract
The aim of this work was to extract phenolic compounds from Chardonnay grape marc employing a microwave-assisted extraction (MAE). Firstly, the effect of solvent concentration (30-60%), solid mass (1.0-2.0 g) and extraction time (5-15 min) on the recovery of phenolic content and antioxidant capacity was evaluated using a response surface methodology (RSM). The optimal parameters found by RSM were 48% ethanol for the solvent content, 10 min for the extraction time, and 1.77 g for the solid mass. The extraction was carried out at room temperature to increase scaling-up opportunities at industrial level. It was found that the phenolic profile was mainly composed of flavanols, such as procyanidins, catechin and epicatechin. Furthermore, the polyphenols obtained by MAE showed a DPPH· inhibition value of 87 ± 5% and the total phenolic content was 1.21 ± 0.04 mg GAE/mL. Finally, it was observed that the degradation temperature of the extract (≈ 200 °C) was above the temperature commonly used for the manufacture of protein films by thermo-mechanical processes. This highlights the potential use of this extract as a bioactive additive in protein film forming formulations for food and pharmaceutical applications.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE As an approach to prevent biofilm infections caused by Candida tropicalis on various surfaces, determination of effect of biodegradable polycaprolactone nanofibers (PCLNFs) with different concentrations of two different essential oils were tested in this study. RESULTS Both of the tested essential oils exhibited antifungal effect (minimal inhibitory concentration; 0.25-0.49 µL/mL, minimal fungicidal concentration; 0.25-0.49 µL/mL, depending on the C. tropicalis strain) (Zone of inhibition caused by 500 μL/mL concentration of oils; 28-56 mm). 0, 2, 4% clove oil PCLNFs and 0, 2, 4% red thyme oil-PCLNFs were free from bead formation and uniform in diameter. Diameters of all essential oil containing PCLNFs were ranged from 760 to 1100 nm and were significantly different from 0% essential oil-PCLNF (P < 0.05). 0, 2, 4% clove oil-PCLNFs were significantly more hydrophobic compared to 8% clove oil-PCLNF (P < 0.01), whereas 0% and 2% red thyme oil-PCLNFs were significantly more hydrophobic compared to 4% and 8% red thyme oil PCLNFs (P < 0.01). Highest amount of biofilm inhibition was observed by 4% clove oil-PCLNF and by 4% red thyme oil-PCLNF. CONCLUSIONS Clove and red thyme oils may be used not only as antifungals but also as biofilm inhibitive agents on surfaces of biomaterials that are frequently contaminated by C. tropicalis, when they are incorporated into PCLNFs.

Abstract
Polyphenols are secondary plant metabolites which have been studied extensively for their health-promoting properties, and which could also exert pharmacological activities ranging from anti-inflammatory effects, to cytotoxic activity against cancer cells. The main mechanism for programmed cell death is represented by apoptosis, and its dysregulation is involved in the etiopathology of cancer. As such, substances able to induce apoptosis in cancer cells could be used as new anticancer agents. The aim of this paper is to review literature data on the apoptotic effects of polyphenols and the molecular mechanisms through which they induce these effects in cancer cells. In addition, a brief summary of the new delivery forms used to increase the bioavailability, and clinical impact of polyphenols is provided. The studies reported show that many polyphenol rich plant extracts, originating from food and herbal medicine, as well as isolated polyphenols administered individually or in combination, can regulate cell apoptosis primarily through intrinsic and extrinsic mechanisms of action in in vitro conditions. Due to these promising results, the use of polyphenols in the treatment of cancer should therefore be deeply investigated. In particular, because of the low number of clinical trials, further studies are required to evaluate the anticancer activity of polyphenols in in vivo conditions.

Abstract
Biofilm has been recognized as a well-protected form of living for bacteria, contributing to bacterial pathogenicity, particularly for opportunistic species. Biofilm-associated infections are marked by their persistence. Extensive research has been devoted to the formation and composition of biofilms. The immune response against biofilms remains rather unexplored, but there is the notion that bacteria within a biofilm are protected from host defences. Here we glance at the mechanisms by which neutrophils recognize and face biofilms in implant infections and discuss the implications of this interplay, as well as speculate on its significance.
