Abstract
Melioidosis is a severe infectious disease caused by Burkholderia pseudomallei, an intracellular pathogen with a high mortality rate and significant antibiotic resistance. The high mortality rate and resistance to antibiotics have drawn considerable attention from researchers studying melioidosis. This study evaluated the effects of various concentrations (75, 50, and 25 µg/mL) of promethazine hydrochloride (PTZ), a potent antihistamine, on biofilm formation and lipase activity after 24 h of exposure to B. thailandensis E264. A concentration-dependent decrease in both biofilm biomass and lipase activity was observed. RT-PCR analysis revealed that PTZ treatment not only made the biofilm structure loose but also reduced the expression of btaR1, btaR2, btaR3, and scmR. Single gene knockouts of quorum sensing (QS) receptor proteins (∆btaR1, ∆btaR2, and ∆btaR3) were successfully constructed. Deletion of btaR1 affected biofilm formation in B. thailandensis, while deletion of btaR2 and btaR3 led to reduced lipase activity. Molecular docking and biological performance results demonstrated that PTZ inhibits biofilm formation and lipase activity by suppressing the expression of QS-regulated genes. This study found that repositioning PTZ reduced biofilm formation in B. thailandensis E264, suggesting a potential new approach for combating melioidosis.

Abstract
Pseudomonas aeruginosa, a biofilm-forming organism with complex quorum mechanisms (Las, Rhl, PQS, and IQS), poses an imminent danger to the healthcare sector and renders current treatment options for chemotherapy ineffectual. The pathogen's diverse pathogenicity, antibiotic resistance, and biofilms make it difficult to eradicate it effectively. Quorum sensing, a complex system reliant on cell density, controls P. aeruginosa's pathogenesis. Quorum-sensing genes are key components of P. aeruginosa's pathogenic arsenal, and their expression determines how severe the spread of infection becomes. Over the past ten years, there has been a noticeable increase in the quest for and development of new antimicrobial medications. Quorum sensing may be an effective treatment for infections triggered by bacteria. Introducing quorum-sensing inhibitors as an anti-virulent strategy might be an intriguing therapeutic method that can be effectively employed along with current medications. Amongst the several speculated processes, a unique anti-virulence strategy using anti-quorum sensing and antibiofilm medications for targeting pseudomonal infestations seems to be at the forefront. Due to their noteworthy quorum quenching capabilities, biologically active phytochemicals have become more well-known in the realm of science in this context. Recent research showed how different phytochemical quorum quenching actions affect P. aeruginosa's QS-dependent pathogenicity. This review focuses on the most current data supporting the implementation of plant bio-actives to treat P.aeruginosa-associated diseases, as well as the benefits and future recommendationsof employing them in anti-virulence therapies as a supplementary drug development approach towards conventional antibiotic approaches.

Abstract
Despite an overall decrease in occurrence, colorectal cancer (CRC) remains the third most common cause of cancer deaths in the USA. Detection of CRC is difficult in high-risk groups, including those with genetic predispositions, with disease traits, or from certain demographics. There is emerging interest in using engineered bacteria to identify early CRC development, monitor changes in the adenoma and CRC microenvironment, and prevent cancer progression. Novel genetic circuits for cancer therapeutics or functions to enhance existing treatment modalities have been tested and verified in vitro and in vivo. Inclusion of biocontainment measures would prepare strains to meet therapeutic standards. Thus, engineered bacteria present an opportunity for detection and treatment of CRC lesions in a highly sensitive and specific manner.

Abstract
Quorum sensing (QS) is a density-dependent bacterial communication system that uses small molecules as regulatory modulators. Synthetic changes to these molecules can up-or-down-regulate this system, leading to control of phenotypes, like competence and virulence factor production, that have implications in human health. In this chapter, a methodology for library design and screening of synthetic autoinducing peptides (AIPs) to uncover QS SARs is delineated. Additionally, procedures for the synthesis, purification and analysis of linear and cyclic AIPs are detailed. This includes solutions for potential synthetic challenges including diketopiperazine formation when using N-methyl amino acids and cyclization of peptides containing N-terminal cysteine residues. These procedures have and are currently being applied to develop potent QS modulators in Streptococcus pneumoniae, Bacillus cereus, Streptococcus gordonii and Lactiplantibacillus plantarum.

Abstract
Bacterial virulence factors and biofilm development can be controlled by the quorum-sensing (QS) system, which is also intimately linked to antibiotic resistance in bacteria. In previous studies, many researchers found that quorum-sensing inhibitors (QSIs) can affect the development of bacterial biofilms and prevent the synthesis of many virulence factors. However, QSIs alone have a limited ability to suppress bacteria. Fortunately, when QSIs are combined with antibiotics, they have a better therapeutic effect, and it has even been demonstrated that the two together have a synergistic antibacterial effect, which not only ensures bactericidal efficiency but also avoids the resistance caused by excessive use of antibiotics. In addition, some progress has been made through in vivo studies on the combination of QSIs and antibiotics. This article mainly expounds on the specific effect of QSIs combined with antibiotics on bacteria and the combined antibacterial mechanism of some QSIs and antibiotics. These studies will provide new strategies and means for the clinical treatment of bacterial infections in the future.

Abstract
Hafnia alvei, a specific spoilage microorganism, has a strong capacity to destroy food protein and lead to spoilage. The aim of this study was to evaluate the phase-dependent regulation of lux-type genes on the spoilage characteristics of H. alvei H4. The auto-inducer synthase gene luxI and a regulatory gene luxR of the quorum sensing systems in H. alvei H4 were knocked out to construct the mutant phenotypes. On this basis, the research found that the luxI and luxR genes had a strong positive influence on not only flagella-dependent swimming ability and biofilm formation but also the production of putrescine and cadaverine. The luxR gene could downregulate putrescine production. The maximum accumulation of putrescine in wild type, ΔluxI, ΔluxR and ΔluxIR were detected at 24 h, reaching up to 695.23 mg/L, 683.02 mg/L, 776.30 mg/L and 724.12 mg/L, respectively. However, the luxI and luxR genes have a potential positive impact on the production of cadaverine. The maximum concentration of cadaverine produced by wild type, ΔluxI, ΔluxR and ΔluxIR were 252.7 mg/L, 194.5 mg/L, 175.1 mg/L and 154.2 mg/L at 72 h. Moreover, the self-organizing map analysis revealed the phase-dependent effects of two genes on spoilage properties. The luxI gene played a major role in the lag phase, while the luxR gene mainly acted in the exponential and stationary phases. Therefore, the paper provides valuable insights into the spoilage mechanisms of H. alvei H4.

Abstract
Fermentation is one of the most effective methods of food preservation. Since ancient times, food has been fermented using lactic acid bacteria (LAB). Fermented milk is a very intricate fermentation ecosystem, and the microbial metabolism of fermented milk largely determines its metabolic properties. The two most frequently used dairy starter strains are Streptococcus thermophilus (S. thermophilus) and Lactobacillus delbrueckii subsp. bulgaricus (L. bulgaricus). To enhance both the culture growth rate and the flavor and quality of the fermented milk, it has long been customary to combine S. thermophilus and L. bulgaricus in milk fermentation due to their mutually beneficial and symbiotic relationship. On the one hand, the symbiotic relationship is reflected by the nutrient co-dependence of the two microbes at the metabolic level. On the other hand, more complex interaction mechanisms, such as quorum sensing between cells, are involved. This review summarizes the application of LAB in fermented dairy products and discusses the symbiotic mechanisms and interactions of milk LAB starter strains from the perspective of nutrient supply and intra- and interspecific quorum sensing. This review provides updated information and knowledge on microbial interactions in a fermented milk ecosystem.

Abstract
Background and Aim Antimicrobial resistance is an emerging public health threat. Foodborne illnesses are typically caused by bacteria, such as Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Bacillus cereus, and Staphylococcus aureus, which are frequently resistant to common antimicrobial agents. Rice is a staple grain in most parts of the world. Our previous work showed that Phatthalung Sangyod rice seed protein hydrolysates (SYPs), especially SYP4, exhibit antifungal activity against several fungal species that are pathogenic for both humans and animals and are non-cytotoxic to animal red blood cells. In this study, we aimed to determine the effects of the bioactive peptides in SYPs against several pathogenic bacteria in humans and animals. Materials and Methods After isolating SYP1, it was treated as follows: heated (SYP2), and hydrolyzed using pepsin (SYP3), and proteinase K (SYP4). Then, we used 500 μg of protein to evaluate the antibacterial effects on four pathogenic bacteria, including E. coli, P. aeruginosa, B. cereus, and S. aureus, using agar well diffusion. Using a broth microdilution assay, we determined the minimum inhibitory and bactericidal concentration (MIC and MBC, respectively) values of active SYPs. Using the agar well diffusion and microtube incubation methods, we also assessed the inhibitory effects of SYPs on the bacterial quorum sensing (QS) activity of Chromobacterium violaceum. Sangyod rice seed protein hydrolysates were evaluated for their ability to inhibit the biofilm formation of bacterial cells by a crytal violet assay. Furthermore, using the dropping method, we tested the inhibitory effects of SYPs on the bacterial pigments pyocyanin in P. aeruginosa and staphyloxanthin in S. aureus. Results Our results showed that the crude protein lysate (SYP1) did not exhibit antibacterial activity against any of the test bacteria. Intriguingly, after boiling (SYP2) and enzymatic hydrolysis (SYP3 and SYP4), the protein hydrolysates were transformed into bioactive peptides and displayed antibacterial properties against all of the test bacteria at a concentration of 500 μg as determined by agar well diffusion. SYP4 demonstrated the highest antibacterial activity as it completely inhibited all test strains, with inhibition zones ranging from 16.88 ± 0.25 to 21.25 ± 0.5 mm, and also yielded the highest MIC/MBC values against P. aeruginosa, B. cereus, and E. coli, at 256 and >256 μg/mL, respectively. We observed that at least 256 μg/mL of SYP4 is required to exhibit optimal antibacterial activity. At 16-128 μg/mL, it exhibited antibiofilm activity against S. aureus. Furthermore, at 256 μg/mL, SYP4 inhibited pyocyanin in P. aeruginosa and staphyloxanthin in S. aureus. Although SYP2 and SYP3 displayed weak antibacterial activity and their MIC values could not be obtained for all bacteria, they showed strong QS inhibition in C. violaceum at 256 μg protein. Moreover, SYP2 and SYP3, at a minimum concentration of 32 μg/mL, significantly reduced violacein production. SYP3 also showed biofilm reduction activity on S. aureus at least 16-512 μg/mL. Conclusion Sangyod Phatthalung protein hydrolysates exerted excellent inhibitory effects against the growth of bacteria and their virulence factors, such as QS, biofilm formation, and/or pigment production. These factors include zoonotic and foodborne pathogens. Therefore, daily consumption of Sangyod Phatthalung rice might reduce the risk of bacterial pathogenesis and foodborne diseases. In conclusion, functional foods or alternate methods of treating bacterial illnesses may be developed in humans and animals.

Abstract
The development of bacterial resistance to chemical therapy poses a severe danger to efficacy of treating bacterial infections. One of the key factors for resistance to antimicrobial medications is growth of bacteria in biofilm. Quorum sensing (QS) inhibition was created as an alternative treatment by developing novel anti-biofilm medicines. Cell-cell communication is impeded by QS inhibition, which targets QS signaling pathway. The goal of this work is to develop newer drugs that are effective against Pseudomonas aeruginosa by decreasing QS and acting as anti-biofilm agents. In this investigation, N-(benzo[d]thiazol-2-yl)benzamide/N-(thiazol-2-yl)benzamide derivatives 3a-h were designed and synthesized in good yields. Further, molecular docking analyses revealed that binding affinity values were founded -11.2 to -7.6 kcal/mol that were moderate to good. The physicochemical properties of these prepared compounds were investigated through in-silico method. Molecular dynamic simulation was also used to know better understanding of stability of the protein and ligand complex. Comparing N-(benzo[d]thiazol-2-yl)benzamide 3a to salicylic acid (4.40±0.10) that was utilised as standard for quorum sensing inhibitor, the anti-QS action was found greater for N-(benzo[d]thiazol-2-yl)benzamide 3a (4.67±0.45) than salicylic acid (4.40±0.10). Overall, research results suggested that N-(benzo[d]thiazol-2-yl)benzamide/N-(thiazol-2-yl)benzamide derivatives 3a-h may hold to develop new quorum sensing inhibitors.

Abstract
Quorum sensing (QS) is a communication mechanism used among microorganisms that regulate the population density and behavior by sensing the concentration of signaling molecules. Quorum quenching (QQ), a novel, eco-friendly, and efficient method for disease control, interferes with QS by disturbing the production and enzymatic degradation of signaling molecules, blocking communication among microorganisms, and thus has deep potential for use in plant disease control. Pectobacterium carotovorum can cause bacterial soft rot, resulting in yield reduction in a variety of crops worldwide, and can be mediated and regulated by the N-acyl homoserine lactones (AHLs), which are typical signaling molecules. In this study, a novel quenching strain of Pseudomonas multiresinivorans QL-9a was isolated and characterized, and it showed excellent degradation ability against AHLs, degrading 98.20% of N-(-3-oxohexanoyl)-L-homoserine lactone (OHHL) within 48 h. Based on the results of the gas chromatography-mass spectrometer (GC-MS) analysis, a possible pathway was proposed to decompose OHHL into fatty acids and homoserine lactone, in which AHL acylase was involved. Additionally, it has been demonstrated that the QL-9a strain and its crude enzyme are promising biocontrol agents that can considerably reduce the severity of the soft rot disease brought on by P. carotovorum, consequently preventing the maceration of a variety of host plant tissues. All of these results suggest promising applications of the QL-9a strain and its crude enzyme in the control of various plant diseases mediated by AHLs.

Abstract
Enterococcus faecium (E. faecium) is widely used in foods and is known as a probiotic to treat or prevent diarrhea in pets and livestock. However, the poor resistance of E. faecium to high temperature processing procedures limits its use. Strain domestication is a low-cost and effective method to obtain high-temperature-resistant strains. In this study, heat treatment was performed from 45 °C to 70 °C and the temperature was gradually increased by 5 °C every 3 days. After domestication, the survival rates of the high temperature adaptation strain RS047-wl under 65 °C water bath for 40 min was 11.5 times higher than WT RS047. Moreover, the saturated fatty acid (SFA) contents in cell membrane and the cell volume significantly increased in the RS047-wl. The combined transcriptomic, metabolomic, and proteomics analysis results showed a significant enhancement of cell wall and membrane synthesis ability in the RS047-wl. In conclusion, one of the main factors contributing to the improved high temperature resistance of RS047-wl was its enhanced ability to synthesize cell wall and membrane, which helped maintain normal cell morphology. Developing a high-temperature-resistant strain and understanding its mechanism enables it to adapt to high temperatures. This lays the groundwork for its future development and application.

Abstract
Multiple drug resistance poses a significant threat to public health worldwide, with a substantial increase in morbidity and mortality rates. Consequently, searching for novel strategies to control microbial pathogenicity is necessary. With the aid of auto-inducers (AIs), quorum sensing (QS) regulates bacterial virulence factors through cell-to-cell signaling networks. AIs are small signaling molecules produced during the stationary phase. When bacterial cultures reach a certain level of growth, these molecules regulate the expression of the bound genes by acting as mirrors that reflect the inoculum density.Gram-positive bacteria use the peptide derivatives of these signaling molecules, whereas Gram-negative bacteria use the fatty acid derivatives, and the majority of bacteria can use both types to modulate the expression of the target gene. Numerous natural and synthetic QS inhibitors (QSIs) have been developed to reduce microbial pathogenesis. Applications of QSI are vital to human health, as well as fisheries and aquaculture, agriculture, and water treatment. Video Abstract.

Abstract
Biofilm is a complex consortium of microorganisms attached to biotic or abiotic surfaces and live in self-produced or acquired extracellular polymeric substances (EPSs). EPSs are mainly formed by lipids, polysaccharides, proteins, and extracellular DNAs. The adherence to the surface of microbial communities is seen in food, medical, dental, industrial, and environmental fields. Biofilm development in food processing areas challenges food hygiene, and human health. In addition, bacterial attachment and biofilm formation on medical implants inside human tissue can cause multiple critical chronic infections. More than 30 years of international research on the mechanisms of biofilm formation have been underway to address concerns about bacterial biofilm infections. Antibiofilm strategies contain cold atmospheric plasma, nanotechnological, phage-based, antimicrobial peptides, and quorum sensing inhibition. In the last years, the studies on environmentally-friendly techniques such as essential oils and bacteriophages have been intensified to reduce microbial growth. However, the mechanisms of the biofilm matrix formation are still unclear. This review aims to discuss the latest antibiofilm therapeutic strategies against biofilm-forming bacteria.

Abstract
Quorum sensing (QS) is a chemical communication system by which bacteria coordinate gene expression and social behaviors. Quorum quenching (QQ) refers to processes of inhibiting the QS pathway. Deep-sea hydrothermal vents are extreme marine environments, where abundant and diverse microbial communities live. However, the nature of chemical communication in bacteria inhabiting the hydrothermal vent is poorly understood. In this study, the QS and QQ activities with N-acyl homoserine lactones (AHLs) as the autoinducer were detected in bacteria isolated from hydrothermal vents in the Okinawa Trough. A total of 18 and 108 isolates possessed AHL-producing and AHL-degrading abilities, respectively. Bacteria mainly affiliated with Rhodobacterales, Hyphomicrobiales, Enterobacterales and Sphingomonadales showed QS activities; QQ was mainly associated with Bacillales, Rhodospirillales and Sphingomonadales. The results showed that the bacterial QS and QQ processes are prevalent in hydrothermal environments in the Okinawa Trough. Furthermore, QS significantly affected the activities of extracellular enzymes represented by β-glucosidase, aminopeptidase and phosphatase in the four isolates with higher QS activities. Our results increase the current knowledge of the diversity of QS and QQ bacteria in extreme marine environments and shed light on the interspecific relationships to better investigate their dynamics and ecological roles in biogeochemical cycling.

Abstract
Indiscriminate use of antibiotics to treat microbial pathogens has caused emergence of multiple drug resistant strains. Most infectious diseases are caused by microbes that are capable of intercommunication using signaling molecules, which is known as quorum sensing (QS). Such pathogens express their pathogenicity through various QS-regulated virulence factors. Interference of QS could lead to decisive results in controlling such pathogenicity. Hence, QS inhibition has become an attractive new approach for the development of novel drugs. Many quorum sensing inhibitors (QSIs) of diverse origins have been reported. It is imperative that more such anti-QS compounds be found and studied, as they have significant effect on microbial pathogenicity. This review attempts to give a brief account of QS mechanism, its inhibition and describes some compounds with anti-QS potential. Also discussed is the possibility of emergence of quorum sensing resistance.

Abstract
Bacteria utilize a cell density-dependent communication system called quorum sensing (QS) to coordinate group behaviors. In Gram-positive bacteria, QS involves the production of and response to auto-inducing peptide (AIP) signaling molecules to modulate group phenotypes, including pathogenicity. As such, this bacterial communication system has been identified as a potential therapeutic target against bacterial infections. More specifically, developing synthetic modulators derived from the native peptide signal paves a new way to selectively block the pathogenic behaviors associated with this signaling system. Moreover, rational design and development of potent synthetic peptide modulators allows in depth understanding of the molecular mechanisms that drive QS circuits in diverse bacterial species. Overall, studies aimed at understanding the role of QS in microbial social behavior could result in the accumulation of significant knowledge of microbial interactions, and consequently lead to the development of alternative therapeutic agents to treat bacterial infectivity. In this review, we discuss recent advances in the development of peptide-based modulators to target QS systems in Gram-positive pathogens, with a focus on evaluating the therapeutic potential associated with these bacterial signaling pathways.

Abstract
Thermophilic members of the genus Aneurinibacillus constitute a remarkable group of microorganisms that exhibit extraordinary flexibility in terms of polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA) synthesis. In this study, we demonstrate that these Gram-positive bacteria are capable of the utilization of selected lactones, namely, γ-valerolactone (GVL), γ-hexalactone (GHL), and δ-valerolactone (DVL) as the structural precursors of related PHA monomers. In the presence of GVL, a PHA copolymer consisting of 3-hydroxybutyrate, 3-hydroxyvalerate, and also 4-hydroxyvalerate was synthesized, with a 4 HV fraction as high as 53.1 mol%. Similarly, the application of GHL resulted in the synthesis of PHA copolymer containing 4-hydroxyhexanaote (4HHx) (4HHx fraction reached up to 11.5 mol%) and DVL was incorporated into PHA in form of 5-hydroxyvalerate (5 HV) (maximal 5 HV content was 44.2 mol%). The produced materials were characterized by thermoanalytical and spectroscopic methods; the results confirmed extremely appealing material properties of produced copolymers. Further, due to their unique metabolic features and capability of incorporating various PHA monomers into the PHA chain, thermophilic Aneurinibacillus spp. can be considered not only promising chassis for PHA production but also potential donors of PHA-relevant genes to improve PHA production in other thermophiles by using approaches of synthetic biology.

Abstract
Quorum sensing (QS) is a system of communication of bacterial cells by means of chemical signals called autoinducers, which modulate the behavior of entire populations of Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria. Three classes of signaling molecules have been recognized, Al-1, Al-2, Al-3, whose functions are slightly different. However, the phenomenon of quorum sensing is not only concerned with the interactions between bacteria, but the whole spectrum of interspecies interactions. A growing number of research results confirm the important role of QS molecules in the growth stimulation and defense responses in plants. Although many of the details concerning the signaling metabolites of the rhizosphere microflora and plant host are still unknown, Al-1 compounds should be considered as important components of bacterial-plant interactions, leading to the stimulation of plant growth and the biological control of phytopathogens. The use of class 1 autoinducers in plants to induce beneficial activity may be a practical solution to improve plant productivity under field conditions. In addition, researchers are also interested in tools that offer the possibility of regulating the activity of autoinducers by means of degrading enzymes or specific inhibitors (QSI). Current knowledge of QS and QSI provides an excellent foundation for the application of research to biopreparations in agriculture, containing a consortia of AHL-producing bacteria and QS inhibitors and limiting the growth of phytopathogenic organisms.

Abstract
Dental caries is a biofilm-mediated disease that represents a worldwide oral health issue. Streptococcus mutans has been ascertained as the main cariogenic pathogen responsible for human dental caries, with a high ability to form biofilms, regulated by the quorum sensing. Diarylureas represent a class of organic compounds that show numerous biological activities, including the antimicrobial one. Two small molecules belonging to this class, specifically to diphenylureas, BPU (1,3-bis[3,5-bis(trifluoromethyl)phenyl]urea) and DMTU (1,3-di-m-tolyl-urea), showed interesting results in studies regarding the antimicrobial activity against the cariogenic bacterium S. mutans. Since there are not many antimicrobials used for the prevention and treatment of caries, further studies on these two interesting compounds and other diarylureas against S. mutans may be useful to design new effective agents for the treatment of caries with generally low cytotoxicity.

Abstract
Introduction Lactobacilli are avid producers of antimicrobial compounds responsible for their adaptation and survival in microbe-rich matrices. The bactericidal or bacteriostatic ability of lactic acid bacteria (LAB) can be exploited for the identification of novel antimicrobial compounds to be incorporated in functional foodstuffs or pharmaceutical supplements. In this study, the antimicrobial and antibiofilm properties of Lactiplantibacillus pentosus L33, Lactiplantibacillus plantarum L125 and Lacticaseibacillus paracasei SP5, previously isolated form fermented products, were examined, against clinical isolates of Staphylococcus aureus, Salmonella enterica subsp. enterica serovar Enteritidis and Escherichia coli. Methods The ability of viable cells to inhibit pathogen colonization on HT-29 cell monolayers, as well as their co-aggregation capacity, were examined utilizing the competitive exclusion assay. The antimicrobial activity of cell-free culture supernatants (CFCS) was determined against planktonic cells and biofilms, using microbiological assays, confocal microscopy, and gene expression analysis of biofilm formation-related genes. Furthermore, in vitro analysis was supplemented with in silico prediction of bacteriocin clusters and of other loci involved in antimicrobial activity. Results The three lactobacilli were able to limit the viability of planktonic cells of S. aureus and E. coli in suspension. Greater inhibition of biofilm formation was recorded after co-incubation of S. enterica with the CFCS of Lc. paracasei SP5. Predictions based on sequence revealed the ability of strains to produce single or two-peptide Class II bacteriocins, presenting sequence and structural conservation with functional bacteriocins. Discussion The efficiency of the potentially probiotic bacteria to elicit antimicrobial effects presented a strain- and pathogen-specific pattern. Future studies, utilizing multi-omic approaches, will focus on the structural and functional characterization of molecules involved in the recorded phenotypes.

Abstract
Disrupting bacterial quorum sensing (QS) signaling is a promising strategy to combat pathogenic biofilms without the development of antibiotic resistance. Here, we report that food-associated bacteria can interfere with the biofilm formation of a Gram-negative pathogenic bacterium by targeting its AHL (acyl-homoserine lactone) QS system. This was demonstrated by screening metabolic end-products of different lactobacilli and propionibacteria using Gram-negative and biofilm-forming Chromobacterium violaceum as the QS reporter and our anti-QS microscale screening platform with necessary modifications. The method was optimized in terms of the inoculation technique and the concentrations of D-glucose and L-tryptophan, two key factors controlling the synthesis of violacein, a purple pigment indicating the activation of the QS system in C. violaceum. These improvements resulted in ca. 16-times higher violacein yields and enabled revealing anti-QS effects of Lactobacillus acidophilus, Lentilactobacillus kefiri, Lacticaseibacillus rhamnosus and Propionibacterium freudenreichii, including new cheese-associated strains. Our findings also suggest that acetate and propionate excreted by these species are the main factors that interrupt the QS-mediated signaling and subsequent biofilm growth without affecting the cell viability of the C. violaceum reporter. Thus, the present study reports a revised anti-QS screening method to accurately define new bacteria with an ability to combat pathogens in a safe and sustainable way.

Abstract
Experience-based knowledge has shown that bacteria can communicate with each other through a cell-density-dependent mechanism called quorum sensing (QS). QS controls specific bacterial phenotypes, such as sporulation, virulence and pathogenesis, the production of degrading enzymes, bioluminescence, swarming motility, and biofilm formation. The expression of these phenotypes in food spoiling and pathogenic bacteria, which may occur in food, can have dramatic consequences on food production, the economy, and health. Due to the many reports showing that the use of conventional methods (i.e., antibiotics and sanitizers) to inhibit bacterial growth leads to the emergence of antibiotic resistance, it is necessary to research and exploit new strategies. Several studies have already demonstrated positive results in this direction by inhibiting autoinducers (low-molecular-weight signaling compounds controlling QS) and by other means, leading to QS inhibition via a mechanism called quorum quenching (QQ). Thus far, several QS inhibitors (QSIs) have been isolated from various sources, such as plants, some animals from aqueous ecosystems, fungi, and bacteria. The present study aims to discuss the involvement of QS in food spoilage and to review the potential role of probiotics as QSIs.

Abstract
The gut microbiota can change to varying degrees because of changes in the environment. In the present study, we performed microbial amplicon sequencing on the feces of people who had long-term exposure to swine farms (F) and that of people living in normal environments (S) to investigate the impact of the environment on the human gut microbiota. A total of 1,283,503 high-quality ordered sequences were obtained, which provided different levels of microbial classification and statistics. We found that different environments did not alter the richness and diversity of the microbial communities in participants, but caused significant changes in the proportion of some bacteria. The main bacterial phyla found in group F participants were Firmicutes (69.44-89.03%), Actinobacteria (1.7-18.95%), and Bacteroidetes (1.17-22.35%); those found in group S participants were Firmicutes (49.93-95.04%), Bacteroidetes (0.62-39.59%), and Proteobacteria (0.98-11.95%). Additionally, because of changes in phylum proportions, the Bugbase phenotypic classification predicted an increase in the proportion of Gram-positive bacteria in group F and an increase in the proportion of Gram-negative bacteria in group S. In conclusion, our findings suggest that human exposure to swine farms can reshape the gut microbiota, resulting in changes in the microbial abundances. This change can potentially reduce the odds of developing bowel disease and contribute to the prevention of intestinal diseases, providing a theoretical basis for improving human health.

Abstract
Active pharmaceutical ingredients present a substantial risk when they reach the environment and drinking water sources. As a new type of dangerous pollutants with high chemical resistance and pronounced biological effects, they accumulate everywhere, often in significant concentrations (μg/L) in ecological environments, food chains, organs of farm animals and humans, and cause an intense response from the aquatic and soil microbiota. Rhodococcus spp. (Actinomycetia class), which occupy a dominant position in polluted ecosystems, stand out among other microorganisms with the greatest variety of degradable pollutants and participate in natural attenuation, are considered as active agents with high transforming and degrading impacts on pharmaceutical compounds. Many representatives of rhodococci are promising as unique sources of specific transforming enzymes, quorum quenching tools, natural products and novel antimicrobials, biosurfactants and nanostructures. The review presents the latest knowledge and current trends regarding the use of Rhodococcus spp. in the processes of pharmaceutical pollutants’ biodegradation, as well as in the fields of biocatalysis and biotechnology for the production of targeted pharmaceutical products. The current literature sources presented in the review can be helpful in future research programs aimed at promoting Rhodococcus spp. as potential biodegraders and biotransformers to control pharmaceutical pollution in the environment.

Abstract
Hafnia alvei is receiving increasing attention from both a medical and veterinary point of view, but the diversity of molecules it produces has made the interest in this bacterium extend to the field of probiotics, the microbiota, and above all, to its presence and action on consumer foods. The production of Acyl Homoserine Lactones (AHLs), a type of quorum-sensing (QS) signaling molecule, is the most often-studied chemical signaling molecule in Gram-negative bacteria. H. alvei can use this communication mechanism to promote the expression of certain enzymatic activities in fermented foods, where this bacterium is frequently present. H. alvei also produces a series of molecules involved in the modification of the organoleptic properties of different products, especially cheeses, where it shares space with other microorganisms. Although some strains of this species are implicated in infections in humans, many produce antibacterial compounds, such as bacteriocins, that inhibit the growth of true pathogens, so the characterization of these molecules could be very interesting from the point of view of clinical medicine and the food industry. Lastly, in some cases, H. alvei is responsible for the production of biogenic amines or other compounds of special interest in food health. In this article, we will review the most interesting molecules that produce the H. alvei strains and will discuss some of their properties, both from the point of view of their biological activity on other microorganisms and the properties of different food matrices in which this bacterium usually thrives.

Abstract
Viral infections are a major cause of severe, fatal diseases worldwide. Recently, these infections have increased due to demanding contextual circumstances, such as environmental changes, increased migration of people and product distribution, rapid demographic changes, and outbreaks of novel viruses, including the COVID-19 outbreak. Internal variables that influence viral immunity have received attention along with these external causes to avert such novel viral outbreaks. The gastrointestinal microbiome (GIM), particularly the present probiotics, plays a vital role in the host immune system by mediating host protective immunity and acting as an immune regulator. Bacteriocins possess numerous health benefits and exhibit antagonistic activity against enteric pathogens and immunobiotics, thereby inhibiting viral infections. Moreover, disrupting the homeostasis of the GIM/host immune system negatively affects viral immunity. The interactions between bacteriocins and infectious viruses, particularly in COVID-19, through improved host immunity and physiology are complex and have not yet been studied, although several studies have proven that bacteriocins influence the outcomes of viral infections. However, the complex transmission to the affected sites and siRNA defense against nuclease digestion lead to challenging clinical trials. Additionally, bacteriocins are well known for their biofunctional properties and underlying mechanisms in the treatment of bacterial and fungal infections. However, few studies have shown the role of probiotics-derived bacteriocin against viral infections. Thus, based on the results of the previous studies, this review lays out a road map for future studies on bacteriocins for treating viral infections.
