Abstract
Global warming has led to rising water temperatures, posing a significant threat to fish survival. Understanding the mechanisms by which fish respond to and adapt to temperature variations is thus of considerable importance. This study employed high-throughput 16S rRNA gene sequencing and bioinformatics to investigate changes in the intestinal microbiota of the kaluga sturgeon (Huso dauricus) under four temperature conditions (19 °C, 25 °C, 28 °C, and 31 °C) and its relationship with adaptation to high-temperature stress. The results indicated that temperature variations caused significant changes in the intestinal microbiota. Over time, differences in the microbiota structure became more pronounced under different temperature conditions, and within-group variability gradually decreased. At higher temperatures, the relative abundance of Sphingomonas significantly decreased, while that of Clostridium sensu stricto 1, Cetobacterium, and Plesiomonas exhibited a significant increase in relative abundance. Upon the cessation of rapid mortality under various high-temperature conditions, the intestinal microbiota structure and composition became highly similar, with Clostridium sensu stricto 1 dominating both in terms of composition and relative abundance, suggesting a central role in adaptation to high-temperature stress. This study preliminarily confirms that the high-temperature adaptability of Huso dauricus is closely related to the structure and composition of its intestinal microbiota, with bacteria such as Clostridium sensu stricto 1 playing an important role. These findings provide new scientific insights into enhancing fish adaptability to high-temperature stress.

Abstract
Marine organisms' lipid metabolism contributes to marine ecosystems by producing a variety of lipid molecules. Historically, research focused on the lipid metabolism of the organisms themselves. Recent microbiome studies, however, have revealed that gut microbial communities influence the amount and type of lipids absorbed by organisms, thereby altering the organism's lipid metabolism. This has highlighted the growing importance of research on gut microbiota. This review highlights mechanisms by which gut microbiota facilitate lipid digestion and diversify the lipid pool in aquatic animals through the accelerated degradation of exogenous lipids and the transformation of lipid molecules. We also assess how environmental factors and pollutants, along with the innovative use of probiotics, interact with the gut microbiome to influence lipid metabolism within the host. We aim to elucidate the complex interactions between lipid metabolism and gut microbiota in aquatic animals by synthesizing current research and identifying knowledge gaps, providing a foundation for future explorations.

Abstract
Environmental temperature affects the composition, structure, and function of the gut microbial communities in host animals. To elucidate the role of gut microbiota in thermal adaptation, we designed a 2 species × 3 temperatures experiment, whereby we acclimated adult males of two agamid lizard species (warm-climate Leiolepis reevesii and cold-climate Phrynocephalus przewalskii) to 20, 28, and 36°C for 2 weeks and then collected their fecal and small-intestinal samples to analyze and compare the microbiota using 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing technology. The fecal microbiota displayed more pronounced interspecific differences in microbial community than the small-intestinal microbiota in the two species occurring in thermally different regions. The response of fecal and small-intestinal microbiota to temperature increase or decrease differed between the two species, with more bacterial taxa affected by acclimation temperature in L. reevesii than in P. przewalskii. Both species, the warm-climate species in particular, could cope with temperature change by adjusting the relative abundance of functional categories associated with metabolism and environmental information processing. Functional genes associated with carbohydrate metabolism were enhanced in P. przewalskii, suggesting the contribution of the fecal microbiota to cold-climate adaptation in P. przewalskii. Taken together, our results validate the two hypotheses tested, of which one suggests that the gut microbiota should help lizards adapt to thermal environments in which they live, and the other suggests that microbial communities should be thermally more sensitive in warm-climate lizards than in cold-climate lizards.

Abstract
Anthropogenically driven climate change is predicted to increase average sea surface temperatures, as well as the frequency and intensity of marine heatwaves in the future. This increasing temperature is predicted to have a range of negative physiological impacts on multiple life-stages of coral reef fish. Nevertheless, studies of early-life stages remain limited, and tissue-specific transcriptomic studies of post-larval coral reef fish are yet to be conducted. Here, in an aquaria-based study we investigate the tissue-specific (brain, liver, muscle, and digestive tract) transcriptomic response of post-larval (20 dph) Amphiprion ocellaris to temperatures associated with future climate change (+3 °C). Additionally, we utilized metatranscriptomic sequencing to investigate how the microbiome of the digestive tract changes at +3 °C. Our results show that the transcriptional response to elevated temperatures is highly tissue-specific, as the number of differentially expressed genes (DEGs) and gene functions varied amongst the brain (102), liver (1785), digestive tract (380), and muscle (447). All tissues displayed DEGs associated with thermal stress, as 23 heat-shock protein genes were upregulated in all tissues. Our results indicate that post-larval clownfish may experience liver fibrosis-like symptoms at +3 °C as genes associated with extracellular matrix structure, oxidative stress, inflammation, glucose transport, and metabolism were all upregulated. We also observe a shift in the digestive tract microbiome community structure, as Vibrio sp. replace Escherichia coli as the dominant bacteria. This shift is coupled with the dysregulation of various genes involved in immune response in the digestive tract. Overall, this study highlights post-larval clownfish will display tissue-specific transcriptomic responses to future increases in temperature, with many potentially harmful pathways activated at +3 °C.

Abstract
The gut microbiome is known to influence and have regulatory effects in diverse physiological functions of host animals, but only recently has the relationship between host thermal biology and gut microbiota been explored. Here, we examined how early-life manipulations of the gut microbiota in larval amphibians influenced their critical thermal maximum (CTmax) at different acclimation temperatures. We stripped the resident microbiome from egg masses of wild-caught wood frogs (Lithobates sylvaticus) via an antibiotic wash, and then inoculated the eggs with pond water (control), no inoculation, or the intestinal microbiota of another species that has a wider thermal tolerance - green frogs (Lithobates clamitans). We predicted that this cross-species transplant would increase the CTmax of the recipient wood frog larvae relative to the other treatments. In line with this prediction, green frog microbiome-recipient larvae had the highest CTmax while those with no inoculum had the lowest CTmax. Both the microbiome treatment and acclimation temperature significantly influenced the larval gut microbiota communities and α-diversity indices. Green frog microbiome-inoculated larvae were enriched in Rikenellaceae relative to the other treatments, which produce short-chain fatty acids and could contribute to greater energy availability and enhanced heat tolerance. Larvae that received no inoculation had a higher relative abundance of potentially pathogenic Aeromonas spp., which negatively affects host health and performance. Our results are the first to show that cross-species gut microbiota transplants alter heat tolerance in a predictable manner. This finding has repercussions for the conservation of species that are threatened by climate change and demonstrates a need to further explore the mechanisms by which the gut microbiota modulate host thermal tolerance.

Abstract
Salinity is an important environmental stress factor in mariculture. Shrimp intestines harbor dense and diverse microbial communities that maintain host health and anti-pathogen capabilities under salinity stress. In this study, 16s amplicon and transcriptome sequencing were used to analyze the intestine of Fenneropenaeus chinensis under low-salinity stress (15 ppt). This study aimed to investigate the response mechanisms of the intestinal microbiota and gene expression to acute low-salinity stress. The intestinal tissues of F. chinensis were analyzed using 16S microbiota and transcriptome sequencing. The microbiota analysis demonstrated that the relative abundances of Photobacterium and Vibrio decreased significantly, whereas Shewanella, Pseudomonas, Lactobacillus, Ralstonia, Colwellia, Cohaesibacter, Fusibacter, and Lachnospiraceae_NK4A136_group became the predominant communities. Transcriptome sequencing identified numerous differentially expressed genes (DEGs). The DEGs were clustered into many Gene Ontology terms and further enriched in some immunity- or metabolism-related Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes pathways, including various types of N-glycan biosynthesis, amino acid sugar and nucleotide sugar metabolism, and lysosome and fatty acid metabolism. Correlation analysis between microbiota and DEGs showed that changes in Pseudomonas, Ralstonia, Colwellia, and Cohaesibacter were positively correlated with immune-related genes such as peritrophin-1-like and mucin-2-like, and negatively correlated with caspase-1-like genes. Low-salinity stress caused changes in intestinal microorganisms and their gene expression, with a close correlation between them.

Abstract
With the gradual decrease in freshwater resources, the available space for freshwater aquaculture is diminishing. As a result, saline-alkaline water aquaculture has emerged as a crucial method to fulfill the increasing demand. This study investigates the impact of alkaline water on the growth performance, tissues (gill, liver, and kidney), digestive enzyme activity, and intestinal microbiology in grass carp (Ctenopharyngodon idella). The aquarium conditions were set with sodium bicarbonate (18 mmol/L (LAW), 32 mmol/L (HAW)) to simulate the alkaline water environment. A freshwater group was the control (FW). The experimental fish were cultured for 60 days. The findings revealed that NaHCO3 alkaline stress significantly reduced growth performance, caused alterations in the structural morphology of gill lamellae, liver, and kidney tissues, and led to decreased activity of intestinal trypsin and lipase amylase (P < 0.05). Analysis of 16S rRNA sequences demonstrated that alkalinity influenced the abundance of dominant bacterial phyla and genera. Proteobacteria showed a significant decrease under alkaline conditions, while Firmicutes exhibited a significant increase (P < 0.05). Furthermore, alkalinity conditions significantly reduced the abundance of bacteria involved in protein, amino acid, and carbohydrate metabolism, cell transport, cell decomposition, and environmental information processing. Conversely, the abundance of bacteria associated with lipid metabolism, energy metabolism, organic systems, and disease functional flora increased significantly under alkalinity conditions (P < 0.05). In conclusion, this comprehensive study indicates that alkalinity stress adversely affected the growth performance of juvenile grass carp, likely due to tissue damage, reduced activity of intestinal digestive enzymes, and alterations in intestinal microorganisms.

Abstract
The environment is crucial for fish as their mucosal surfaces face continuous challenges in the water. Fish mucosal surfaces harbor the microbiome and mucosal immunity. Changes in the environment could affect the microbiome, thus altering mucosal immunity. Homeostasis between the microbiome and mucosal immunity is crucial for the overall health of fish. To date, very few studies have investigated mucosal immunity and its interaction with the microbiome in response to environmental changes. Based on the existing studies, we can infer that environmental factors can modulate the microbiome and mucosal immunity. However, we need to retrospectively examine the existing literature to investigate the possible interaction between the microbiome and mucosal immunity under specific environmental conditions. In this review, we summarize the existing literature on the effects of environmental changes on the fish microbiome and mucosal immunity. This review mainly focuses on temperature, salinity, dissolved oxygen, pH, and photoperiod. We also point out a gap in the literature and provide directions to go further in this research field. In-depth knowledge about mucosal immunity-microbiome interaction will also improve aquaculture practices by reducing loss during environmental stressful conditions.

Abstract
Climate change is dramatically increasing the frequency and severity of marine heatwaves (MHWs) in the Mediterranean basin, strongly affecting marine food production systems. However, how it will shape the ecology of aquaculture systems, and the cascading effects on productivity, is still a major knowledge gap. The present work aims to increase our understanding of future impacts, caused by raising water temperatures, on the interaction between water and fish microbiotas, and consequential effects upon fish growth. Thus, the bacterial communities present in the water tanks, and mucosal tissues (skin, gills and gut), of greater amberjack farmed in recirculatory aquaculture systems (RAS), at three different temperatures (24, 29 and 33 °C), were characterized in a longitudinal study. The greater amberjack (Seriola dumerili) is a teleost species with high potential for EU aquaculture diversification due to its fast growth, excellent flesh quality and global market. We show that higher water temperatures disrupt the greater amberjack's microbiota. Our results demonstrate the causal mediation exerted by this bacterial community shifts on the reduction of fish growth. The abundance of members of the Pseudoalteromonas is positively correlated with fish performance, whereas members of the Psychrobacter, Chryseomicrobium, Paracoccus and Enterovibrio are suggested as biomarkers for dysbiosis, at higher water temperatures. Hence, opening new evidence-based avenues for the development of targeted microbiota-based biotechnological tools, designed to increase the resilience and adaptation to climate change of the Mediterranean aquaculture industry.

Abstract
Largemouth bass (Micropterus salmoides), one of the most important freshwater commercial fish species has been widely cultivated in China. In recent years, the nocardiosis caused by Nocardia seriolae has greatly damaged the M. salmoides industry and there is no effective treatment at present. Currently, Cetobacterium somerae, the predominant bacteria in the gut of many freshwater fishes has been reported to be associated with fish health. However, whether the native C. somerae could protect the host from N. seriolae is unclear. In this study, M. salmoides were fed with three different diets, including control diet (CD), low C. somerae diet (106 CFU/g as LD) and high C. somerae diet (108 CFU/g as HD). After 8-week feeding, growth performance, gut health index, serum enzyme activities and the expression of inflammation-related genes were tested. Results showed that the LD and HD diets had no adverse effects on the growth performance. Moreover, dietary HD enhanced gut barrier and reduced intestinal ROS and ORP, as well as increased serum enzyme activities including ACP, AKP, SOD and LZM compared to the CD group. In addition, the HD diet significantly up-regulated the expression of TNF-α, IL8, IL-1β and IL15, while down-regulating the expression of TGF-β1 and IL10 in kidney. Moreover, the expression of antibacterial genes was significantly increased in HD group after being challenged by N. seriolae. And the fish fed HD diet exhibited higher survival rate (57.5%) than that in CD (37.5%) and LD groups (42.5%). To summarize, our study demonstrates that dietary HD can enhance gut health, improve immune response and strengthen pathogen resistance, suggesting that C. somerae is a potential probiotic for defending against N. seriolae infection in M. salmoides.

Abstract
Temperature variation structures the composition and diversity of gut microbiomes in ectothermic animals, key regulators of host physiology, with potential benefit to host or lead to converse results (i.e., negative). So, the significance of either effect may largely depend on the length of time exposed to extreme temperatures and how rapidly the gut microbiota can be altered by change in temperature. However, the temporal effects of temperature on gut microbiota have rarely been clarified. To understand this issue, we exposed two juvenile fishes (Cyprinus carpio and Micropterus salmoides), which both ranked among the 100 worst invasive alien species in the world, to increased environmental temperature and sampled of the gut microbiota at multiple time points after exposure so as to determine when differences in these communities become detectable. Further, how temperature affects the composition and function of microbiota was examined by comparing predicted metagenomic profiles of gut microbiota between treatment groups at the final time point of the experiment. The gut microbiota of C. carpio was more plastic than those of M. salmoides. Specifically, communities of C. carpio were greatly altered by increased temperature within 1 week, while communities of M. salmoides exhibit no significant changes. Further, we identified 10 predicted bacterial functional pathways in C. carpio that were temperature-dependent, while none functional pathways in M. salmoides was found to be temperature-dependent. Thus, the gut microbiota of C. carpio was more sensitive to temperature changes and their functional pathways were significantly changed after temperature treatment. These results showed the gut microbiota of the two invasive fishes differ in response to temperature change, which may indicate that they differ in colonization modes. Broadly, we have confirmed that the increased short-term fluctuations in temperatures are always expected to alter the gut microbiota of ectothermic vertebrates when facing global climate change.

Abstract
Marine water temperatures are increasing globally, with eastern Australian estuaries warming faster than predicted. There is growing evidence that this rapid warming of coastal waters is increasing the abundance and virulence of pathogenic members of the Vibrionaceae, posing a significant health risk to both humans and aquatic organisms. Fish disease, notably outbreaks of emerging pathogens in response to environmental perturbations such as heatwaves, have been recognised in aquaculture settings. Considerably less is known about how rising sea surface temperatures will impact the microbiology of wild fish populations, particularly those within estuarine systems that are more vulnerable to warming. We used a combination of Vibrio-specific quantitative PCR and amplicon sequencing of the 16S rRNA and hsp60 genes to examine seawater and fish (Pelates sexlineatus) gut microbial communities across a quasi-natural experimental system, where thermal pollution from coal-fired power stations creates a temperature gradient of up to 6 °C, compatible with future predicted temperature increases. At the warmest site, fish hindgut microbial communities were in a state of dysbiosis characterised by shifts in beta diversity and a proliferation (71.5% relative abundance) of the potential fish pathogen Photobacterium damselae subsp. damselae. Comparable patterns were not identified in the surrounding seawater, indicating opportunistic proliferation within estuarine fish guts under thermal stress. A subsequent evaluation of predicted future warming-related risk due to pathogenic Vibrionaceae in temperate estuarine fish demonstrated that warming is likely to drive opportunistic pathogen increases in the upper latitudinal range of this estuarine fish, potentially impacting adaptations to future warming. These findings represent a breakthrough in our understanding of the dynamics of emerging pathogens in populations of wild aquatic organisms within environments likely to experience rapid warming under future climate change.

Abstract
Pacific salmon experience prolonged elevation in corticosteroid hormones during important life history events including migration, reproduction, and senescence. These periods of elevated corticosteroids correspond with changes to immunity and energy metabolism; therefore, fish may be particularly vulnerable to mortality at these times. Recent studies found that stress-induced cortisol release associated with microbial community shifts in salmonids, raising the question of how longer-term corticosteroid dynamics that accompany life history transitions affect salmonid microbiomes. In this work, we experimentally evaluated the relationships between gut microbiome composition, chronically elevated corticosteroids, and mortality in juvenile Chinook salmon (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha). We found that treatment with slow-release implants of the corticosteroids cortisol or dexamethasone resulted in changes to the gut microbiome. Morbidity was also associated with microbiome composition, suggesting that the gut microbiome reflects individual differences in susceptibility to opportunistic pathogens. Additionally, we analyzed a small number of samples from adult fish at various stages of senescence. Results from these samples suggest that microbiome composition associated with gut integrity, and that the microbial communities of corticosteroid treated juveniles shift in composition toward those of senescent adults. Overall, findings from this work indicate that the gut microbiome correlates with mortality risk during periods of chronic corticosteroid elevation.

Abstract
Transport is essential in cross-regional culturing of juvenile fish. Largemouth bass (Micropterus salmoides) often exhibit decreased vitality and are susceptible to disease after transportation. To study the effects of transport stress on juvenile largemouth bass, juveniles (average length: 8.42 ± 0.44 cm, average weight 10.26 ± 0.32 g) were subjected to a 12 h simulated transport, then subsequently, allowed to recover for 5 d. Liver and intestinal tissues were collected at 0, 6 and 12 h after transport stress and after 5 d of recovery. Oxidative and immunological parameters and the gut microbiome were analyzed. Hepatocytic vacuolization and shortened intestinal villi in the bass indicated liver and intestinal damage due to transport stress. Superoxide dismutase, lysozyme and complement C3 activities were significantly increased during transport stress (p < 0.05), indicating that transport stress resulted in oxidative stress and altered innate immune responses in the bass. With the transport stress, the malondialdehyde content first increased, then significantly decreased (p < 0.05) and showed an increasing trend in the recovery group. 16S rDNA analysis revealed that transport stress strongly affected the gut microbial compositions, mainly among Proteobacteria, Firmicutes, Cyanobacteria and Spirochaetes. The Proteobacteria abundance increased significantly after transport. The Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes functional analysis revealed that most gut microbes played roles in membrane transport, cell replication and repair. Correlation analyses demonstrated that the dominant genera varied significantly and participated in the measured physiological parameter changes. With 5 days of recovery after 12 h of transport stress, the physiological parameters and gut microbiome differed significantly between the experimental and control groups. These results provide a reference and basis for studying transport-stress-induced oxidative and immune mechanisms in juvenile largemouth bass to help optimize juvenile largemouth bass transportation.

Abstract
The yellow catfish (P. fulvidraco), as one of the economically-relevant freshwater fish found in China, cannot tolerate cold stress. Understanding the physiological and biochemical mechanisms under cold stress may provide insights for improving yellow catfish management in the cold. Therefore, we investigated the metabolic and intestinal microbiota changes in cold stress in response to induced cold stress. We found that cold stress in yellow catfish lead to a significant increase in the consumption of glucose and triglycerides, as well as increased use of cholesterol as an alternate energy source. Moreover, cold stress also activated several significant biological processes in the fish such as thermogenesis, oxidative phosphorylation, the spliceosome machinery, RNA transport, protein processing that occurs in the ER, and purine and pyrimidine metabolism pathways involved in energy production. On the other hand, many other mechanisms like insulin resistance, starch and sucrose metabolism, and the glyoxylate and dicarboxylate metabolic pathways that also served as energy production pathways were weakened. Furthermore, organic acids and their derivatives as well as the lipids and lipid-like molecules were mainly altered in cold stress; prenol lipids, steroids, and their derivatives were significantly upregulated, while fatty acyls and glycerophospholipids were significantly downregulated. Transcriptomic and metabolomic integrated analysis data revealed that carbohydrate metabolism, lipid metabolism, amino acid metabolism, and nucleotide metabolism were involved in cold stress resistance. In addition, the intestinal microbiota abundance was also reduce and the pathogenic bacteria of plesiomonas was rapidly appreciation, which suggesting that cold stress also impaired intestinal health. This research study could offer insights into winter management or the development of feed to promote cold resistance in yellow catfish.

Abstract
To investigate the impacts of sub-lethal concentrations of antibiotic agents in mariculture, culturable approach and DNA based detection were employed to isolate and analyse resistant bacteria and resistant genes in this study. Milkfish (Chanos chanos), the target rearing animal was exposed to sulfamethoxazole (SMX; 2 mg/L) for 8 weeks and resulted in reduced survival rate and weight gain to 61.9 % and 28.4 %, respectively compared to control milkfish (p < 0.001). The composition of SMX-resistant bacteria isolated from the culture water and the gastrointestinal tracts of milkfish underwent changes in response to SMX treatment with a reduced diversity. The prevalence of SMX resistant genes sul in bacterial isolates was elevated from 2.8 % of control to 100 % of SMX-administrated water. Exposure to SMX at a sub-lethal dosage enhanced the prevalence of resistance genes sul1 and sul2 in resistant bacteria, thus implying high frequency of resistance dissemination in the marine environment and surrounding ecosystems.

Abstract
The gut microbiome is vital to the physiological and biochemical functions of the host, and changes in the composition of these microbial communities may affect growth and adaptability to the environment. Pomacea canaliculata is an invasive freshwater snail which has become a serious agricultural pest. Temperature adaptation is considered an important reason for the widespread distribution of this species. To date, the contribution of the gut microbes to host fitness of P. canaliculata during long-term temperature stress is not well understood. In this study, the morphological changes and intestinal microbiome of P. canaliculata under long-term stress at low temperature (15°C) and high temperature (35°C) were investigated with laboratory experiments. Compared with control group (25°C), the alpha diversity increased and pathogenic bacteria enriched changed under high and low temperature stress. The effect of high temperature stress on the intestinal microbiome of P. canaliculata was more significant than that of low temperature stress. A sustained high temperature environment led to an increase in the abundance of pathogenic bacteria, such as Aeromonas and Enterobacter, and a decrease in the abundance of immune-related bacteria such as Bacteroidetes, Firmicutes, and Lactococcus. These intestine microbiome changes can increase the risk of diseases like intestinal inflammation, and lead to more deaths at high temperature environments. In addition, with the extension of stress time from 14 to 28 days, the beneficial bacteria such as Bacteroidetes, Firmicutes, and Lactococcus were significantly enriched, while potential pathogenic bacteria such as Pseudomonas, Acinetobacter, Shivalella, and Flavobacterium decreased, suggesting that intestinal microbiota may play an important role in host response to heat stress. These results are consistent with previously reported results that the survival rate of both male and female P. canaliculata no longer significantly reduced after 21 days of high temperature stress, suggesting that the surviving P. canaliculata had gradually adapted to high temperature environments under long-term high temperature stress.

Abstract
The composition of gut microbiota is not a static state in humans but fluctuates in response to changes in environments, diet, and lifestyle factors. Here, we explored differences in gut microbiota between populations worked offshore and onshore and further studied microbiota-associated variables in offshore workers (OFWs). We investigated the gut microbiota of 168 healthy subjects (offshore: 145 and onshore: 23) using 16S rRNA sequencing. Our results indicated that the marine environment caused significant changes in intestinal microbial structure, which was mainly reflected in the increase in bacterial diversity, changes in composition, and the emergence of more specific bacteria in OFWs. In addition, characteristics of gut microbiota in OFWs were further explored, and the genus Holdemanella was considered a potential contributor to the stable state of health. Besides, some dietary factors, namely, duck, mutton, dairy products, and algae vegetables were identified as the gut microbial covariates in the OFWs cohort and were positively correlated with the genus Holdemanella. This suggests the positive intervention of diet on Holdemanella. Our data highlight, for the first time to our knowledge, that the marine geographical environment plays an important role in shaping the gut mycobiome composition. And diet could be considered as the targeted intervention that alters the composition of the microbiome to improve host health.

Abstract
Numerous studies have shown that thermal tolerance and intestinal heat resistance are strongly associated with temperature acclimation. However, few reports have successfully conducted similar research on fishes from the Qinghai–Tibetan Plateau, an area that is facing the threat of climate warming. Therefore, the present study determined the growth, thermal tolerance, and intestinal heat stress (exposure to 30°C) responses in juveniles of a Tibetan fish, Oxygymnocypris stewarti, acclimated to three temperature levels (10°C, 15°C, and 20°C, named as T10, T15, and T20, respectively) for 30 days. The fastest growth was recorded in the T15 group. At 1°C/30 min heating rate, the critical thermal maximum (CTMax) ranged from 31.3°C to 32.3°C, and the lethal thermal maximum (LTMax) ranged from 31.8°C to 32.6°C among the three acclimation temperatures. According to the results of thermal tolerance tests, the heat stress temperature was set to 30°C. When the water temperature reached 30°C, the expression of the intestinal heat shock protein 70 (HSP70) gene as well as the intestinal microbiome and histology of experimental fish were monitored at 0, 2, 6, and 12 h. The expression of HSP70 reached the highest level at 2 h in all three temperature treatments. The histological analysis showed damage to intestinal cells, including diffuse infiltration of lymphocytes, villi epithelial cell swelling, decrease of intestinal villi length, and cytoplasmic light staining at 2 h in all three temperature treatments. In terms of the intestinal microbiome, phyla Proteobacteria and Firmicutes dominated the treatments at each monitored time in the T10 and T15 groups and at 0 h in T20 group, while phyla Fusobacteria, Proteobacteria, and Cyanobacteria were dominant in treatments at 2, 6, and 12 h in the T20 group. The overall results indicated that acclimation temperature could affect the growth, thermal tolerance, and intestinal heat stress response of O. stewarti juveniles. As the first report on intestinal heat stress response associated with temperature acclimation in a Tibetan fish, this study will help to understand the potential effects of climate change on highland fishes.

Abstract
The physiology of males and females can be vastly different, complicating interpretation of toxicological and physiological data. The objectives of this study were to elucidate the sex differences in the microbiome-gastrointestinal (GI) transcriptome of adult zebrafish. We compared microbial composition and diversity in both males and females fed the same diet and housed in the same environment. There were no sex-specific differences in weight gain nor gastrointestinal morphology based on histopathology. There was no difference in gut microbial diversity, richness (Shannon and Chao1 index) nor predicted functional composition of the microbiome between males and females. Prior to post-hoc correction, male zebrafish showed higher abundance for the bacterial families Erythrobacteraceae and Lamiaceae, both belonging to the phyla Actinobacteria and Proteobacteria. At the genus level, Lamia and Altererythrobacter were more dominant in males and an unidentified genus in Bacteroidetes was more abundant in females. There were 16 unique differentially expressed transcripts in the gastrointestinal tissue between male and female zebrafish (FDR corrected, p < 0.05). Relative to males, the mRNA expression for trim35-9, slc25a48, chchd3b, csad, and hsd17b3 were lower in female GI while cyp2k6, adra2c, and bckdk were higher in the female GI. Immune and lipid-related gene network expression differed between the sexes (i.e., cholesterol export and metabolism) as well as networks related to gastric motility, gastrointestinal system absorption and digestion. Such data provide clues as to putative differences in gastrointestinal physiology between male and female zebrafish. This study identifies host-transcriptome differences that can be considered when interpreting the microgenderome of zebrafish in studies investigating GI physiology and toxicology of fishes.

Abstract
The gut microbiomes of rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) reared at 16° and 22 °C were determined using formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded tissues (FFPE) and compared to fresh frozen tissue. The data revealed microbiomes could be successfully determined using FFPE tissue opening a new horizon in studying intestinal microbiota using archived histological samples.

Abstract
Over the last decades, aquaculture production increased rapidly. The future development of the industry highly relies on the sustainable utilization of natural resources. The need for improving disease resistance, growth performance, food conversion, and product safety for human consumption has stimulated the application of probiotics in aquaculture. Probiotics increase growth and feed conversion, improve health status, raise disease resistance, decrease stress susceptibility, and improve general vigor. Currently, most probiotics still originate from terrestrial sources rather than fish. However, host-associated (autochthonous) probiotics are likely more persistent in the gastrointestinal tract of fish and may, therefore, exhibit longer-lasting effects on the host. Probiotic candidates are commonly screened in in vitro assays, but the transfer to in vivo assessment is often problematic. In conclusion, modulation of the host-associated microbiome by the use of complex probiotics is promising, but a solid understanding of the interactions involved is only in its infancy and requires further research. Probiotics could be used to explore novel ingredients such as chitin-rich insect meal, which cannot be digested by the fish host alone. Most importantly, probiotics offer the opportunity to improve stress and disease resistance, which is among the most pressing problems in aquaculture.
