Abstract
Factors contributing to variations in the quality and microbiota of ensiled forages and in bulk tank microbiota in milk from cows fed different forages were investigated. Nutritional quality, fermentation parameters and hygiene quality of forage samples and corresponding bulk tank milk samples collected in 3 periods from 18 commercial farms located in northern Sweden were compared. Principal coordinates analysis revealed that the microbiota in forage and bulk milk, analyzed using 16S rRNA gene-based amplicon sequencing, were significantly different. The genera Lactobacillus, Weissella and Leuconostoc dominated in forage samples, whereas Pseudomonas, Staphylococcus and Streptococcus dominated in bulk milk samples. Forage quality and forage-associated microbiota were affected by ensiling method and by use of silage additive. Forages stored in bunker and tower silos (confounded with use of additive) were associated with higher levels of acetic and lactic acid and Lactobacillus. Forage ensiled as bales (confounded with no use of additive) was associated with higher dry matter content, water-soluble carbohydrate content, pH, yeast count and the genera Weissella, Leuconostoc and Enterococcus. For bulk tank milk samples, milking system was identified as the major factor affecting the microbiota and type of forage preservation had little impact. Analysis of common amplicon sequence variants (ASVs) suggested that forage was not the major source of Lactobacillus found in bulk tank milk.

Abstract
This study investigated the effect of co-ensiled rice straw (RS) with whole sugar beet (SB) on lactating cows' performance. Ensiled rice straw (ERS) as control (CGS) was incorporated with immersed corn grains (CG) for 24 h, while the 2nd and 3rd ensiled RS (LSB and HSB) contained SB substituted of 50 and 100% of CG on an energy basis (total digestible nutrients, TDN), respectively. In the experimental diets, D1, D2, and D3, which include CGS, LSB, and HSB provided ad-libitum, respectively, while a concentrated feed mixture (2% of body weight) was offered. The population of lactic acid bacteria was slightly higher with fed HSB, relative to LSB and CGS. The OM, CP, EE, NFC, and TCH contents of CGS were slightly higher than LSB and HSB, while the opposite happened with the aNDFom, and ADFom contents. The digestibility of DM, OM, aNDFom, and ADFom of the D3 group was higher (P < 0.05) than in D1 and D2. The D3 recorded the highest values (P < 0.05) of silage consumption, and palatability. Milk production, fat-corrected milk (FCM), and energy-corrected milk (ECM) were (P < 0.05) higher for cows fed D3 compared with D1 and D2. Fat, protein, lactose, and total solids were trending on the same track. The feed conversion ratio (FCR) of cows fed diet D3 was better than cows fed D1 diet. The level of glucose in the blood increased (P < 0.05) significantly with feeding on HSB than LSB, which was significantly (P < 0.05) higher compared to CGS. In conclusion, co-ensiling of RS with the whole SB plant consider a good method to improve its nutritional value.

Abstract
Objective This study aimed to investigate the promoting effect of a Bacillus velezensis (BV) strain on lactic acid bacteria (LAB) and determine its influence on the fermentation quality and aerobic stability of silage. Methods Flat colony counting method was used to evaluate the effect of BV on the growth of LAB. Freshly harvested whole-plant corn was inoculated separately with BV and L. plantarum (LP), along with an uninoculated control group (CK), and assessed at 1, 3, 5, 7, 15, and 30 days of ensiling. Results The results indicated that BV exhibited a proliferative effect on Weissella confusa, Lactobacillus plantarum L-2, and Pediococcus pentosaceus. And exhibited a more rapid pH reduction in BV-inoculated silage compared with that in CK and LP-inoculated silage during the initial stage of ensiling. Throughout ensiling, the BV and LP experimental groups showed enhanced silage fermentation quality over CK. Additionally, relative to LP-inoculated silage, BV-inoculated silage displayed reduced pH and propionic acid. BV also prolonged aerobic stability under aerobic conditions. The microbial community in BV-inoculated silage showed greater stability than that in LP-inoculated silage. Additionally, Firmicutes and Lactobacillus exhibited more rapid elevation initially in BV versus LP-inoculated silage, but reached comparable levels between the two inoculation groups in the later stage. Conclusion In summary, BV enhanced the efficacy and aerobic stability of whole-plant corn silage fermentation by stimulating LAB proliferation.

Abstract
Traditional autoclaving, slow degradation rate and preservation of biomass treated by fungi are the main factors restricting biological treatment. In our previous studies, strains with high efficiency and selective lignin degradation ability were obtained. To further solve the limiting factors of biological treatment, this paper proposed a composite treatment technology, which could replace autoclaves for fungal treatment and improve the preservation and utilization of fungal-pretreated straw. The autoclaved and expanded buckwheat straw were, respectively, degraded by Irpex lacteus for 14 days (CIL, EIL), followed by ensiling of raw materials (CK) and biodegraded straw of CIL and EIL samples with Lactobacillus plantarum for different days, respectively (CP, CIP, EIP). An expansion led to lactic acid bacteria, mold, and yeast of the samples below the detection line, and aerobic bacteria was significantly reduced, indicating a positive sterilization effect. Expansion before I. lacteus significantly enhanced lignin selective degradation by about 6%, and the absolute content of natural detergent solute was about 5% higher than that of the CIL. Moreover, EIL decreased pH by producing higher organic acids. The combination treatment created favorable conditions for ensiling. During ensiling, EIP silage produced high lactic acid about 26.83 g/kg DM and the highest acetic acid about 22.35 g/kg DM, and the pH value could be stable at 4.50. Expansion before I. lacteus optimized the microbial community for ensiling, resulting in EIP silage co-dominated by Lactobacillus, Pediococcus and Weissella, whereas only Lactobacillus was always dominant in CP and CIP silage. Clavispora gradually replaced Irpex in EIP silage, which potentially promoted lactic acid bacteria growth and acetic acid production. In vitro gas production (IVGP) in EIL was increased by 30% relative to CK and was higher than 24% in CIL. The role of expansion was more significant after ensiling, the IVGP in EIP was increased by 22% relative to CP, while that in CIP silage was only increased by 9%. Silage of fungal-treated samples reduced methane emissions by 28% to 31%. The study demonstrated that expansion provides advantages for fungal colonization and delignification, and further improves the microbial community and fermentation quality for silage, enhancing the nutrition and utilization value. This has practical application value for scaling up biological treatment and preserving the fungal-treated lignocellulose.

Abstract
Silage as the main forage for ruminants could be a reservoir for antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) through which these genes got access into the animals' system causing a latent health risk. This study employed metagenomics and investigated the ARGs' fate and transmission mechanism in high-moisture alfalfa silage treated with formic acid bactericide. The results showed that there were 22 ARGs types, in which multidrug, macrolide-lincosamide-streptogramine, bacitracin, beta-lactam, fosmidomycin, kasugamycin, and polymycin resistance genes were the most prevalent ARGs types in the ensiled alfalfa. The natural ensiling process increased ARGs enrichment. Intriguingly, after 5 days of ensiling, formic acid-treated silage reduced ARGs abundances by inhibiting host bacterial and plasmids. Although formic acid bactericide enhanced the fermentation characteristics of the high-moisture alfalfa by lowering silage pH, butyric acid concentration, dry matter losses and proteolysis, it increased ARGs abundances in alfalfa silage owing to increases in abundances of ARGs carriers and transposase after 90 days of ensiling. Notably, several pathogens like Staphylococcus, Clostridium, and Pseudomonas were inferred as potential ARGs hosts in high-moisture alfalfa silage, and high-moisture alfalfa silage may harbor a portion of the clinical ARGs. Fundamentally, microbes were distinguished as the foremost driving factor of ARGs propagation in ensiling microecosystem. In conclusion, although formic acid bactericide improved the fermentation characteristics of high-moisture alfalfa during ensiling and reduced ARGs enrichment at the initial ensiling stage, it increased ARGs enrichment at the end of ensiling.

Abstract
Maize silage is produced to alleviate the effects of forage shortages on ruminant animals, particularly during the dry season. Microorganisms play a significant role in silage fermentation and thus, to a large extent, determine the silage quality. The modulation of silage microorganisms may help to inhibit undesirable bacteria and improve the silage quality. Therefore, condensed tannin extract from Vachellia mearnsii bark was used as an additive in maize silage during ensiling. Hence, this study evaluated the effects of a tannin extract (condensed tannin) additive on the fermentative quality, aerobic stability, and bacterial composition of maize silage. A mini-silo experiment on maize with five treatments was conducted for 75 days. The silage treatments were as follows: (T1) maize forage with no inoculation (negative control); (T2) maize forage inoculated with LAB and 1% tannin extract; (T3) maize forage inoculated with LAB only (positive control); (T4) and maize forage inoculated with LAB and 2% tannin extract; (T5) maize forage inoculated with LAB and 3% tannin extract. The results showed that the additives modulated the silage microorganism composition. However, this was without affecting the silage's fermentative quality and aerobic stability. All the silages recorded a pH below 4.2, which indicated well-fermented silage. The tannin extract suppressed the growth of undesirable bacteria, such as Dysgonomonas, Gluconacetobacter and Clostridium genera, while promoting desirable bacteria, such as Lactobacillus and Weissella genera, which were attributed to the silage quality. It is thus concluded that tannins can be strategically used as silage additives to modulate the microbial composition of silage and improve the silage quality by promoting the dominance of the desirable bacteria in the silage.

Abstract
AIMS To investigate the epiphytic microbiota in grass-clover herbage harvested at different sites and occasions and to explore the effect of different silage additives on the resulting silage microbiota. METHODS AND RESULTS Herbage was harvested from grass-clover leys at geographically distributed sites in a long-term field experiment in Sweden, in early and late season of two consecutive years. Different silages were made from the herbage using: (1) no additive, (2) acid-treatment, and (3) inoculation by starter culture. Herbages were analysed for botanical and chemical composition, and the resulting silages for products of fermentation. Bacterial DNA was extracted from herbage and silage samples, followed by sequencing using Illumina 16S rRNA amplicon sequencing. Herbage microbiota showed no clear correlation to site or harvesting time. Silage additives had a major effect on the ensiling process; inoculation resulted in well fermented silages comprising a homogenous microbiota dominated by the genera Lactobacillus and Pediococcus. A minor effect of harvest time was also observed, with generally a more diverse microbiota in second-harvest silages. Untreated silages showed a higher relative abundance (RA) from non-lactic acid bacteria compared to acid-treated silages. In most silages, only a few bacterial amplicon sequence variants contributed to most of the RA. CONCLUSIONS The epiphytic microbiota in grass-clover herbage were found to be random and not dependent on site. From a microbial point of view, the most predictable and preferable silage outcome was obtained by inoculation with a starter culture. Acid-treatment with formic- and propionic acid surprisingly resulted in a less preferable silage. Silage making without additives cannot be recommended based on our results.

Abstract
Objective The objectives of this study were to evaluate the effects of different forage proportions in the fermented total mixed ration (FTMR) on growth performance, muscle fatty acid profile, and rumen microbiota of lambs. Methods Thirty 6-month-old small tail Han sheep × Ujumqin lambs with initial body weight (BW) of 27.8 ± 0.90 kg were selected for the test and divided into two groups of 15 sheep in each treatment (three pens per treatment and five lambs per pen) according to the principle of homogeneity. Two isoenergetic and isonitrogenous diets were formulated according to the NRC. The diet treatments were designed as (1) OH treatment containing 25% alfalfa hay and 35% oat hay, and (2) AH treatment containing 35% alfalfa hay with 25% oat hay. The forage-to-concentrate ratio for both diets was 65: 35 (DM basis). Three replicates were randomly selected from each treatment to determine growth performance, fatty acid profile and rumen bacterial communities in lambs. Results Results revealed no statistically significant (p > 0.05) differences in dry matter intake and average daily gain between the two diet groups. Cholesterol and intramuscular fat were significantly (p > 0.05) higher in the AH group, while no statistically significant difference (p > 0.05) was found in pH24 value. The muscle fatty acid compositions of lambs were obviously (p < 0.05) influenced by the diet treatments. Compared with the OH group, the C16:1, C17:0, and C20:3n6 contents were higher (p < 0.05) in the AH group, whereas the content of C18:1n9c, C20:1, C18:3n3, and C22:6n3 was obviously (p < 0.05) increased in the OH group. The monounsaturated fatty acid (MUFA) contents were significantly higher in the OH group, whereas no significant differences (p > 0.05) were detected in saturated fatty acid (SFA) and polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) contents among the two diet treatments. Bacterial composition was generally separated into two clusters based on principal coordinate analysis, and the OH group had a higher Shannon index. The relative abundance at the genes level of the Rikenellaceae_RC9_gut_group was obviously (p < 0.05) increased in the AH group and the relative abundances of Prevotella_1, Fibrobacter, and Bacteroidales_UCG_001_unclassified were obviously (p < 0.05) enriched in the OH group. Integrated correlation analysis also underscored a possible link between the muscle fatty acid compositions and significantly altered rumen microbiota. Conclusion Overall, oat-based roughage in FTMR could promote a beneficial lipid pattern in the Longissimus lumborum muscles of lambs. These findings provide a potential insight into diet effects on fatty acid profile and the rumen microbiome of lambs, which may help make decisions regarding feeding.

Abstract
BACKGROUND With its high nutritional value and productivity, Italian ryegrass as a biomass feedstock constantly supplies rumen degradable nitrogen and digestible fiber to ruminants. However, biofuel production is easily reduced during ensiling due to the high-moisture content of Italian ryegrass, leading to economic losses. Lactic acid bacteria inoculants could improve lignocellulosic degradation and fermentation quality and decrease dry matter loss during the bioprocessing of silage. Therefore, this study analyzed the effects of Lactobacillus buchneri TSy1-3 (HE), Lactobacillus rhamnosus BDy3-10 (HO), and the combination of HE and HO (M) on fermentation quality, bacterial community and metabolome in high-moisture Italian ryegrass silage during ensiling. RESULTS The results showed that the pH value was significantly lower in the HO groups than in the other treatments at the end of ensiling, and the dry matter and acetic acid contents were significantly higher in the HO group than in the other inoculated groups. All inoculants decreased the diversity of the bacterial community and significantly increased the relative abundance of Lactobacillus. Inoculation with HO significantly improved the concentrations of organic acids, dipeptides, ferulic acid, apigenin, and laricitrin. Compared with Lactobacillus buchneri TSy1-3 (HE), HO significantly upregulated the flavonoid compounds in the flavone and flavonol biosynthesis pathway. CONCLUSIONS Overall, these findings suggest that inoculation with HO was beneficial for the development of Italian ryegrass as a biomass feedstock, improving fermentation quality, accelerating changes in bacterial community composition and increasing biofunctional metabolites in high-moisture Italian ryegrass silage.

Abstract
This study assessed the effects of Lactiplantibacillus plantarum (ZZU203), cellulase-producing Bacillus methylotrophicus (CB), or their combination (ZZU203_CB) on the fermentation parameters of alfalfa after 10 and 60 days of ensiling. Additionally, the bacterial community compositions were analyzed using absolute quantification 16S-seq (AQS). The results showed that CB silage displayed a higher lactic acid (LA) concentration at 10 d, a higher abundance of Lactobacillus, and lower abundance of Pediococcus, Enterococcus, and Weissella than those in the control (CK) silage. Compared with CK silage, the ZZU203 silage increased LA concentration, fructose and rhamnose concentrations, and the abundance of Lactobacillus, and decreased pH value, ammoniacal nitrogen, acetic acid, neutral detergent fiber and acid detergent fiber concentrations, and the abundance of Pediococcus, Enterococcus, Weissella, Hafnia, and Garciella after 60 days of ensiling. In addition, ZZU203 and ZZU203_CB silage had a similar silage quality and bacterial community, while the inoculation of ZZU203_CB significantly promoted LA accumulation and the numbers of Lactobacillus at 10 d compared with ZZU203 silage. Therefore, ZZU203 or a combination of ZZU203 and CB can be used as potential silage additives to improve the silage quality of alfalfa.

Abstract
Oat (Avena sativa L.) is one of the important forage crops in the world. However, oat grown in Southwest China has higher moisture content and their preservation face significant challenges. In addition, existing commercial lactic acid bacteria (LAB) have poor fermentation effects in hot and humid regions. Consequently, the current study investigated the response of oat fermentation quality and microbial community to self-selected LAB inoculation. The treatments were: CK, sterilized water; LP694, Lactobacillus plantarum 694; LR753, Lactobacillus rhamnosus 753; and LPLR, LP694 combined with LR753, followed by 1, 3, 7, 14, and 60 days (d) of fermentation. The results showed that LAB inoculation significantly raised the lactic acid content, and decreased the level of pH value, acetic acid, and ammonia-N in oat silage. The LR753 group had a significantly higher (p < 0.05) lactic acid content (60.95 g kg-1 DM), and lower pH value (3.95) and ammonia-N content (10.1 g kg-1 DM) followed by the LPLR group. The LR753 showed lower NDF (54.60% DM) and ADF (39.73% DM) contents than other groups. The Lactobacillus was a prevalent genus in LAB-treated groups, and its relative abundance reached maximum in LP694 (69%) on day 3, while in the LR753 group (72%) on 60 days. The Lactobacillus rhamnosus, Lactobacillus plantarum, and Lactobacillus fermentum became the dominant species in LAB-treated groups with fermentation time. The Lactobacillus genus was positively correlated with WSC (R = 0.6, p < 0.05), while negatively correlated with pH (R = -0.5, p < 0.05), and BA (R = -0.5, p < 0.01). Overall, the LR753 group had better fermentation quality and preservation of nutritional components providing theoretical support and guidance for future oat silage production in Southwest China.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The use of alfalfa is a promising response to the increasing demand for squalene. Ensiling could enhance the squalene content of fresh alfalfa and silage. To investigate and exploit the anaerobic fermentation of forage as a new squalene source, alfalfa was ensiled without (CON) or with molasses (ML) and sunflower seed oil (SSL) for 10, 40, and 70 days. RESULTS Naturally ensiled alfalfa was of poor quality but had up to 1.93 times higher squalene content (P < 0.001) than fresh alfalfa. The squalene-producing bacteria were found to be cocci lactic acid bacteria (LAB). Adding ML and SSL decreased squalene content (P = 0.002 and P < 0.001) by 6.89% and 11.6%, respectively. Multiple linear regression models and correlation analysis indicated that squalene synthase was the key enzyme for squalene synthesis. The addition of ML and SSL altered the structure of LAB communities, mainly decreasing the relative abundance of cocci LAB, which was responsible for squalene synthesis, and changing the fermentation products (lactic acid, propionic acid, and ammonia-N) influencing the squalene-related enzymes, thereby decreasing squalene production. Compared with squalene production from the reference bacteria (Pediococcus acidilactici Ch-2, Rhodopseudomonas palustris, Bacillus subtilis, engineered Escherichia coli), alfalfa silage had the potential to be a new squalene source. CONCLUSION Natural ensiled alfalfa was a promising source for squalene, and ensiling was a potential pathway to obtain novel high-yield squalene bacteria. © 2022 Society of Chemical Industry.

Abstract
Silage fermentation is naturally carried out by lactic acid bacteria (LAB) to mainly produce lactic acid (LA) and other organic acids as preservatives. Along with fermentation time, the growth of LAB will replace and suppress undesirable microorganisms. This meta-analysis study aimed to explore silage microbiome differentiated by LAB inoculants and type of raw materials. A total of 37 articles with 185 studies and 475 datasets were used for building up the meta-database. Data were subjected to the mixed model methodology. The parameters observed were silage quality and silage microbiome post-ensiling process. Results revealed that four bacterial genera along with Weissella dominated the post-ensiling process. The addition of lactic acid inoculants in the silage has increased the abundance of Lactobacillus spp. and decreased the Shannon index significantly. Moreover, the abundance of both L. plantarum and L. buchneri increased, and subsequently, Weissella, Pseudomonas, Proteobacteria, pH value, ammoniacal nitrogen (NH3-N), coliforms, and the yeasts were decreased significantly due to the addition of LAB inoculants in silage (p < 0.05). Environmental factors such as temperature affected the existence of Pseudomonas, Exiguobacterium, and Acinetobacter. However, the dry matter, LA, acetic acid (AA), the ratio of LA to AA, and the LAB population were enhanced significantly (p < 0.05). Among the LAB types, the lowest abundance of Pseudomonas was due to the LAB group, while the lowest abundance of Weissella and Proteobacteria was due to the addition of the combined LAB group. In conclusion, the addition of LAB is effectively enhancing the silage microbiome and silage quality by altering bacterial diversity and the metabolic products of the silage materials for safe preservation.

Abstract
Information about the relationships between preservation characteristics and main bacterial communities of fermented feeds can guide decision making during feed preservation and silage additive development. The objective was to evaluate fermentation quality, aerobic stability, microbial quality and bacterial profile of crimped barley grains ensiled under three moisture contents (MC): 228 (low MC), 287 (medium MC) and 345 (high MC) g/kg fresh matter; and using four additive treatments: 1. Control (CONT), 2. Formic and propionic acid-based additive (FPA), 3. Inoculation with homofermentative and heterofermentative strains of lactic acid bacteria (LAB), and 4. Salt-based additive (SALT). There was a quadratic effect (p < 0.05) of incremental MC on pH where greater decline happened from low (5.81) to medium (4.83) MC than from medium to high (4.28) MC, while lactic acid concentration and aerobic stability increased in a linear manner (p < 0.05). Ammonia-N and acetic acid concentrations increased quadratically (p < 0.05) with increasing levels of MC. The effects of additives depended on MC so that improvements in preservation characteristics in response to LAB and SALT were observed at medium and high MC, while FPA was effective at all MC levels. A minor shift was observed in bacterial ecology from raw material towards low MC samples, with Erwiniaceae sp., Enterobacterales spp. and Pseudomonas dominating the fermentation. A major change occurred in medium and high MC materials, where Fructilactobacillus dominated the fermentation in CONT, FPA and SALT silages. LAB-treated silages at medium and high MC resulted in a distinguished pattern with dominance of Lentilactobacillus followed by Lactiplantibacillus. Most abundant communities in the samples, such as Fructilactobacillus, Erwiniaceae sp., Enterobacterales spp. and Pseudomonas, were correlated with several fermentation characteristics. Our results showed that crimped barley grains could be successfully ensiled under various MC and additive treatments. Low MC feeds had higher risk to be aerobically unstable while high MC resulted in more extensive fermentation, with potentially poor fermentation quality. The suitable additive depends on the raw material characteristics as LAB and SALT require relatively high MC to be effective, while FPA showed consistent improvements over all MC levels used in the current study. Awareness of the MC of grain prior to ensiling allows to identify the risks to preservation quality and provides information for choosing an effective additive.

Abstract
Introduction Alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) silage is one of the major forages with high protein for ruminants. Methods The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of lactobacilli inoculants on protein and carbohydrate fractions, ensiling characteristics and bacterial community of alfalfa silage. Wilted alfalfa (35% dry matter) was inoculated without (control) or with Lactobacillus coryniformis, Lactobacillus casei, Lactobacillus plantarum, and Lactobacillus pentosus and ensiled for 7, 15, and 60 days. Results and discussion Silage inoculated with L. pentosus was superior to L. coryniformis, L. casei, L. plantarum in improving the fermentation quality of alfalfa silage, as indicated by the lowest ammonia nitrogen content and silage pH during ensiling. There was minor difference in water soluble carbohydrates content among all silages, but L. pentosus inoculants was more efficient at using xylose to produce lactic acid, with lower xylose content and higher lactic acid content than the other inoculants. Compared with the control, L. pentosus inoculants did not affect true protein content of silage, but increased the proportions of buffer soluble protein and acid detergent soluble protein. The L. pentosus inoculants reduced the bacterial diversity In alfalfa silage with lower Shannon, Chao1, and Ace indices, and promoted relative abundance of lactobacillus and decreased the relative abundance of Pediococcus compared with the control. As well as L. pentosus inoculants up-regulated amino acid, carbohydrate, energy, terpenoids, and polypeptides metabolism, and promoted lactic acid fermentation process. Abstract
Ensiling legume with cereal is an effective method to ensure the energy rich-feed, but no information is available on the microbial fermentation mechanism of intercropped Lablab purpureus (Lablab) and sweet sorghum in the saline-alkaline region. Therefore, the present study investigated the silage quality and microbial community of intercropped Lablab and sweet sorghum silages grown in the saline-alkaline region with or without inoculation of Lactobacillus plantarum (LP). The experimental treatments were prepared according to the Lablab and sweet sorghum planting patterns: Lablab and sweet sorghum sowing seed ratios were 1:1 (L), 5:1 (M), and 9:1 (H). After harvesting, each mixture was treated with LP or sterilized water (CK), followed by 60 days of fermentation. Results showed that both LP inoculation and intercropping significantly raised the lactic acid (LA) content and decreased the pH value, acetic acid (AA), and ammonia-N in intercropped silages. The LP addition and intercropping also improved the relative feed value by reducing structural carbohydrates. Moreover, LP silages had a greater relative abundance of Lactobacillus than CK silages, and its relative abundance increased with an increased seed-sowing ratio of Lablab in intercropping. LP was the prevalent species in LP silages compared to CK silages, and its relative abundance also increased with an increased seed-sowing ratio of Lablab in intercropping. The genus Lactobacillus was negatively correlated with ammonia-N (R = -0.6, p = 0.02) and AA (R = -0.7, p < 0.01) and positively correlated with LA (R = 0.7, p < 0.01) and crude protein (R = 0.6, p = 0.04). Overall, the intercropped seeding ratios of Lablab and sweet sorghum of ≥ 5:1 with LP inoculation resulted in better fermentation quality and preservation of nutritional components providing theoretical support and guidance for future intercropped protein-rich silage production in the saline-alkaline region.

Abstract
This study examined the effects of different additives on the fermentation quality, nutrient composition, microbial communities, and rumen degradation of ensiled alfalfa. Six treatments were employed in which additives were applied to alfalfa on a fresh weight basis: CK (no additive), FA (0.6% formic acid), CaO (3% calcium oxide and 3% urea), LB (1 × 106 cfu/g Lentilactobacillus buchneri), GLB (2% glucose and 1 × 106 cfu/g L. buchneri), and FLB (2% fucoidan and 1 × 106 cfu/g L. buchneri). After 60 days of ensiling, all treatments altered the bacterial communities, improved the fermentation quality, reduced dry matter (DM) and crude protein (CP) losses, and enhanced the rumen degradation of nutrients. The addition of LB increased the relative abundance of Lactobacillus spp. (p < 0.05), whereas GLB reduced (p < 0.05) the NH3-N:TN ratio and elevated (p < 0.05) the concentrations of Lactobacillus and lactic acid content. The FA treatment reduced (p < 0.05) the pH, as well as the DM and CP degradations, while the CaO treatment increased the degradations of DM, acid detergent fiber, and neutral detergent fiber. We concluded that FA, LB, GLB, and FLB had beneficial effects on alfalfa fermentation, and that CaO increased alfalfa silage rumen degradation.

Abstract
Once improperly managed, the citric acid production industry generates waste, which contributes to pollution and other environmental issues. We proposed that, with sufficient quality improvement, citric acid by-product (CAP) might be used for animal feed, thereby reducing the environmental impact. The aim of the present study was to ferment citric acid by-product (CAP) by inoculation with lactic acid bacteria (LAB) and a fibrolytic enzyme mixture for quality improvement and crude fiber reduction in the waste products. LAB inoculants were L. casei TH14, and the additive enzyme used was a fibrolytic enzyme mixture (glucanase, pectinase, and carboxymethylcellulase) of a small-scale fermentation method. The seven treatments employed in this study were as follows: (1) control (untreated), (2) CAP-inoculated L. casei TH14 at 0.01% DM, (3) CAP-inoculated L. casei TH14 at 0.05% DM, (4) CAP-inoculated enzymes at 0.01% DM, (5) CAP-inoculated enzymes at 0.05% DM, (6) CAP-inoculated L. casei TH14 at 0.01% DM with enzymes at 0.01% DM, and (7) CAP-inoculated L. casei TH14 at 0.05% DM with enzymes at 0.05% DM. The samples were taken on days 1, 7, 14, 21, and 28 of ensiling, both before and after. Four replications were used. The results of the chemical composition of the CAP before and after ensilage inoculated with L. casei TH14 did not show any differences in crude protein, ether extract, ash, or gross energy, but the enzymes significantly (p < 0.05) decreased crude fiber and increased nitrogen-free extract. The combination was especially effective at improving the characteristics of CAP, with a reduction in crude fiber from 21.98% to 22.69%, of neutral detergent fiber (NDF) from 16.01% to 17.54%, and of acid detergent fiber (ADF) from 13.75% to 16.19%. Furthermore, the combination of L. casei TH14 and the enzyme increased crude protein from 1.75% to 2.24% at 28 days of ensiling. Therefore, CAP-inoculated L. casei TH14 did not change in chemical composition, while crude fiber, NDF, and ADF decreased when CAP was inoculated with enzyme. The combination of L. casei TH14 and the enzyme is more effective at improving chemical composition and reducing crude fiber and enhancing carbohydrate breakdown in the CAP. Finally, by enhancing the CAP’s quality, it may be possible to use it in animal feed and minimize its impact on the environment.

Abstract
Ensiling has long been as a mainstream technology of preserving forage for ruminant production. This study investigated the effects of bioaugmented ensiling with laccase and Pediococcus pentosaceus on the fermentation quality, nutritive value, enzymatic hydrolysis, and bacterial community of alfalfa. The application of laccase and Pediococcus pentosaceus combination was more potent in modulating the fermentation quality of silage than laccase and Pediococcus pentosaceus alone, as indicated by higher lactic acid contents and lactic acid to acetic acid ratios, and lower pH, dry matter losses, and ammonia nitrogen contents. Moreover, treatments with additive enhanced protein preservation and structural carbohydrate degradation, while increasing true protein and water-soluble carbohydrate contents. By promoting lignin degradation, treatments containing laccase further facilitated the release of sugars from cellulose compared with treatment with Pediococcus pentosaceus alone. The additive treatments reduced the bacterial diversity and optimized the bacterial community composition of silage, with an increase in the relative abundance of desirable Lactobacillus and a decrease in the relative abundance of undesirable Enterobacter and Klebsiella. PICRUSt functional prediction based on Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) databases revealed that PL and LPL treatments increased the metabolism of membrane transport, carbohydrate, and terpenoids and polyketides related to fermentation activities. It can be concluded that bioaugmented ensiling with laccase and Pediococcus pentosaceus combination can be an effective and practical strategy to improve silage fermentation and nutrient preservation of alfalfa silage.

Abstract
To obtain high-quality silage and better understand the mechanism underlying silage fermentation, a study was conducted to investigate the effects of konjac flour (KF), Lactiplantibacillus plantarum (LP) and their combination on fermentation quality, aerobic stability, and microbial community of high-moisture forage rape after 60 days of ensiling. Results showed that the KF and LP treatments increased the lactic acid content, decreased the pH value, and inhibited the production of butyric acid in ensiled forage rape (p < 0.05). The additives also altered the bacterial community of forage rape silages, showing reduced Shannon and Simpson indexes (p < 0.05), while the abundance of desirable Lactobacillus was increased, and the abundance of undesirable bacteria, such as enterobacteria and clostridia, was decreased (p < 0.05). In addition, their combination significantly improved the aerobic stability (96 h vs. 28 h, p < 0.05) and exhibited notable influence on the bacterial community, with the highest abundance of Lactobacillus. These results indicated that KF and LP improved the silage quality of high-moisture forage rape, and their combination displayed a beneficial synergistic effect.

Abstract
To characterize the effects of time of day for harvest on the fermentation parameters, bacterial community, and metabolic characteristics of sorghum-sudangrass hybrid (SSG) silage, SSG (vegetative stage) harvested at 7:00 (AM), 12:00 (M), and 17:00 (PM) on three sunny days were ensiled for 1, 3, 7, 14, 30, and 60 days. Compared to AM silage, M and PM silages were characterized by delayed fermentation, unnormal lower final pH, and lower acetic acid production. In addition, PM silage contained higher residual water-soluble carbohydrates than other silages. After 60 days of ensiling, AM silage was dominated by Lactobacillus, whereas the bacterial communities of M and PM silages were complex and mainly composed of bacteria such as Delftia, Methylobacterium-Methylorubrum, Enhydrobacter, Acinetobacter, and Bacillus. The harvest time affected a wide range of metabolic pathways including "Metabolism" and "Cellular Processes" and "Organismal Systems" in SSG silage. Particularly, at the late stage of ensiling M silage exhibited highest relative abundances of amino acid metabolisms including "glycine, serine, and threonine metabolism," "phenylalanine metabolism," and lowest relative abundances of "lysine biosynthesis." These results suggest that the time of day for harvest could affect the fermentation parameters, bacterial community, and metabolic characteristics of SSG silage. Better SSG silage characteristics could be achieved through morning harvest. IMPORTANCE Ensiling is a common way for preserving green forages worldwide. Silage fermentation quality can vary greatly depending on the chemical and microbial characteristics of forage crop being ensiled. It is well documented that forages exhibit considerable variations in chemical composition and epiphytic microbiota during daylight. However, the effects of the time of day for harvest on silage fermentation is less investigated. Our results demonstrate that the time of day for harvest could affect the fermentation parameters, bacterial community, and metabolic characteristics of SSG hybrid silage. Harvesting SSG late in the day delayed fermentation process, lowered acetic acid production and final pH, and increased the residual water-soluble carbohydrates content in silage. Moreover, the delayed harvest time increased the relative abundances of bacteria such as Delftia, Methylobacterium-Methylorubrum, Acinetobacter, Enhydrobacter, and Bacillus, and amino acid metabolisms at the late stage of SSG ensiling. This study highlights the importance of diurnal changes in forage to fermentation characteristics, providing a strategy to improve silage quality through optimizing the harvest time.

Abstract
The objective of this study was to assess the effect of harvesting time on the fermentation characteristics, chemical composition, and microbial community of king grass silage. King grass was harvested at three growth periods of 90 days (KN90S), 110 days (KN110S), and 130 days (KN130S); chopped into 2-3-cm particle size; and ensiled in polyethylene bags (20 × 30 cm). The fermentation quality and chemical composition of silages were analyzed after 1, 3, 7, 14, 30, and 60 days of ensiling. Bacterial community of silage ensiled for 60 days was profiled using next generation sequencing (NGS) technology. The KN110S showed the most extensive lactic acid (LA) fermentation during 7 days of fermentation compared to KN90S and KN130S. After 60 days of fermentation, the KN110S showed the lowest pH and the highest lactic acid content among the three treatments. The butyric acid and ammonia nitrogen contents of KN90S and KN130S were significantly greater than those of KN110S (p < 0.05). After a timespan of 60 days of ensiling, the bacterial community of king grass silage was predominantly populated by Proteobacteria in phylum level, whereas unclassified Enterobacteriaceae genus remained dominant in all silages. A higher relative abundance of Clostridium was observed in KN90S and KN130S, but not in KN110S, and greater abundance of Lactococcus appeared in KN110S and KN130S silages than KN90S. It is concluded that harvesting time had an important effect on the fermentation quality and microbial community of king grass silage.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to determine the effects of six common commercial lactic acid bacteria (LAB) additives [A1, Lactobacillus plantarum, L. buchneri, and Enterococcus faecalis; A2, L. plantarum and L. casei; A3, L. plantarum and L. buchneri; A4, L. plantarum, L. buchneri, L. casei, and Pediococcus acidilactici; A5, L. plantarum (producing feruloyl esterase); and A6, L. buchneri, P. acidilactici, β-glucanase, and xylanase] on the bacterial community and fermentation quality of alfalfa silage. Alfalfa was harvested at the squaring stage, wilted in the field for 24 h, and ensiled without any additives (Control) or with A1, A2, A3, A4, A5, or A6. Microbial counts, bacterial community, fermentation parameters, and nutritional composition were determined after ensiling for 90 days. The total abundance of LAB genera on alfalfa pre-ensiling was 0.38% in bacterial community. The abundances of Lactobacillus, Enterococcus, and Pediococcus in the Control silage were 42.18, 40.18, and 8.09% of abundance, respectively. The abundances of Lactobacillus in A1-, A2-, A3-, A4-, and A5-treatments were 89.32, 92.93, 92.87, 81.12, and 80.44%, respectively. The abundances of Pediococcus and Lactobacillus in A6-treatment were 70.14 and 24.86%, respectively. Compared with Control silage, LAB-treated silage had lower pH and less ammonia nitrogen and water-soluble carbohydrates concentrations (p < 0.05). Further, the A5- and A6-treatments contained lower neutral detergent fiber, acid detergent fiber, and hemicellulose than other treatments (p < 0.05). Overall, LAB genera were presented as minor taxa in alfalfa pre-ensiling and as dominant taxa in alfalfa silage. Adding LAB additives improved the fermentation quality and altered the bacterial community of alfalfa silage. The main bacterial genera in Control silage were Lactobacillus, Enterococcus, and Pediococcus. Lactobacillus dominated the bacterial communities of A1-, A2-, A3-, A4-, and A5-treatments, while Pediococcus and Lactobacillus were dominant bacterial genera in A6-treatment. Inoculating A5 and A6 degraded the fiber in alfalfa silage. It is necessary to ensile alfalfa with LAB inoculants.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES Mahyaveh is a traditional Iranian fish sauce produced by fermentation and hydrolysis. The main production of Mahyaveh has been traditionally and scientific research and industrial measures has not been done on it with the aim to achieve a production with less microbial load. Therefore, the aim of this research was to study the type of fish, salt concentration and fermentation time on the bacterial population of Iranian fish sauce (Mahyaveh). MATERIALS AND METHODS For this purpose, the effects of fish type (tuna, anchovy and sardine), salt concentration (15%, 25% and 35%) and fermentation time (30, 75 and 120 days) on the total microbial count, Micrococcus, Enterobacteriaceae and Bacillus were investigated. 15 treatments were designed according to the Box-Behnken Response Surface Methodology. RESULTS Simultaneous optimization to achieve the minimum total microbial count, Micrococcus, Enterobacteriaceae and Bacillus in the Mahyaveh sauce was obtained with 99.49% desirability at the time of 103.63 days of fermentation with the third type of fish (Sardine) and at a salt concentration of 29.38%. CONCLUSION By optimizing the conditions of producing Mahyaveh sauce, fish sauce can be produced with the least amount of microbial load with more health safety.

Abstract
This study aimed to investigate the effect of epiphytic microbiota from alfalfa and red clover on the fermentative products, bacterial community compositions, and their predicted functional characteristics in Italian ryegrass silage. By microbiota transplantation and γ-ray irradiation sterilization, the irradiated Italian ryegrass was treated as follows: (1) sterile distilled water (STIR); (2) epiphytic microbiota on Italian ryegrass (IRIR); (3) epiphytic microbiota on alfalfa (IRAL); and (4) epiphytic microbiota on red clover (IRRC). The irradiated Italian ryegrass was ensiled for 1, 3, 7, 15, 30, and 60 days. STIR had similar chemical components with fresh Italian ryegrass. IRAL had higher lactic acid concentrations [64.0 g/kg dry matter (DM)] than IRIR (22.3 g/kg DM) and IRRC (49.4 g/kg DM) on day 3. IRRC had the lowest lactic acid concentrations (59.7 g/kg DM) and the highest pH (4.64), acetic acid (60.4 g/kg DM), ethanol (20.4 g/kg DM), and ammonia nitrogen (82.6 g/kg DM) concentrations and Enterobacteriaceae [9.51 log10 cfu/g fresh weight (FW)] populations among treatments on day 60. On days 3 and 60, Lactobacillus was dominant in both IRIR (42.2%; 72.7%) and IRAL (29.7%; 91.6%), while Hafnia-Obesumbacterium was predominant in IRRC (85.2%; 48.9%). IRIR and IRAL had lower abundances of "Membrane transport" than IRRC on day 3. IRIR and IRAL had lower abundances of phosphotransacetylase and putative ATP-binding cassette transporter and higher abundances of arginine deiminase on day 3. IRAL had the highest abundance of fructokinase on day 3. Overall, inoculating epiphytic microbiota from different legume forages changed the fermentative products, bacterial community compositions, and their predicted functional characteristics in Italian ryegrass silage. The microbial factors that result in the differences in fermentative profiles between legume forage and grass were revealed. Knowledge regarding the effect of epiphytic microbiota could provide more insights into the improvement of silage quality.
