Calcium Oxalates in Lichens on Surface of Apatite-Nepheline Ore (Kola Peninsula, Russia)

Crystal Chemistry of the Copper Oxalate Biomineral Moolooite: The First Single-Crystal X-ray Diffraction Studies and Thermal Behavior

Moolooite, Cu(C₂O₄)·nH₂O, is a typical biomineral which forms due to Cu-bearing minerals coming into contact with oxalic acid sources such as bird guano deposits or lichens, and no single crystals of moolooite of either natural or synthetic origin have been found yet. This paper reports, for the first time, on the preparation of single crystals of a synthetic analog of the copper-oxalate biomineral moolooite, and on the refinement of its crystal structure from the single-crystal X-ray diffraction (SCXRD) data. Along with the structural model, the SCXRD experiment showed the significant contribution of diffuse scattering to the overall diffraction data, which comes from the nanostructural disorder caused by stacking faults of Cu oxalate chains as they lengthen. This type of disorder should result in the chains breaking, at which point the H₂O molecules may be arranged. The amount of water in the studied samples did not exceed 0.15 H₂O molecules per formula unit. Apparently, the mechanism of incorporation of H₂O molecules governs the absence of good-quality single crystals in nature and a lack of them in synthetic experiments: the more H₂O content in the structure, the stronger the disorder will be. A description of the crystal structure indicates that the ideal structure of the Cu oxalate biomineral moolooite should not contain H₂O molecules and should be described by the Cu(C₂O₄) formula. However, it was shown that natural and synthetic moolooite crystals contain a significant portion of "structural" water, which cannot be ignored. Considering the substantially variable amount of water, which can be incorporated into the crystal structure, the formula Cu(C₂O₄)·nH₂O for moolooite is justified.

A review on the use of lichens as a biomonitoring tool for environmental radioactivity

Lichens have been widely used as a biomonitoring tool to record the distribution and concentration of airborne radioactivity and pollutants such as metals. There are limitations, however: although pollutants can be preserved in lichen tissues for long periods of time, not all radioactive and inert elements behave similarly. The chemical species of elements at the source, once captured, and the mode of storage within lichens play a role in this biomonitoring tool. Lichens are a symbiotic association of an algal or cyanobacterial partner (photobiont) with a fungal host (mycobiont). Lichens grow independently of the host substrates, including rocks, soils, trees and human-made structures. Lacking a root system, lichen nutrient or contaminant uptake is mostly through direct atmospheric inputs, mainly as wet and dry deposition. As lichens grow in a large variety of environments and are resilient in harsh climates, they are adapted to capture and retain nutrients from airborne sources. The context of this review partially relates to future deployment of small modular reactors (SMRs) and mining in remote areas of Canada. SMRs have been identified as a future source of energy (electricity and heat) for remote off-grid mines, potentially replacing diesel fuel generation facilities. For licensing purposes, SMR deployment and mine development requires capabilities to monitor background contaminants (natural radioactivity and metals) before, during and after deployment, including for decommissioning and removal. Key aspects reviewed herein include: (1) how lichens have been used in the past to monitor radioactivity; (2) radiocontaminants capture and storage in lichens; (3) longevity of radiocontaminant storage in lichen tissues; and (4) limitations of lichens use for monitoring radiocontaminants and selected metals.

Biofilm Medium Chemistry and Calcium Oxalate Morphogenesis

The present study is focused on the effect of biofilm medium chemistry on oxalate crystallization and contributes to the study of the patterns of microbial biomineralization and the development of nature-like technologies, using the metabolism of microscopic fungi. Calcium oxalates (weddellite and whewellite in different ratios) were synthesized by chemical precipitation in a weakly acidic environment (pH = 4-6), as is typical for the stationary phase of micromycetes growth, with a ratio of Ca2+/C2O42- = 4.0-5.5, at room temperature. Additives, which are common for biofilms on the surface of stone in an urban environment (citric, malic, succinic and fumaric acids; and K+, Mg2+, Fe3+, Sr2+, SO42+, PO43+ and CO32+ ions), were added to the solutions. The resulting precipitates were studied via X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDXS). It was revealed that organic acids, excreted by micromicetes, and some environmental ions, as well as their combinations, significantly affect the weddellite/whewellite ratio and the morphology of their phases (including the appearance of tetragonal prism faces of weddellite). The strongest unique effect leading to intensive crystallization of weddellite was only caused by the presence of citric acid additive in the medium. Minor changes in the composition of the additive components can lead to significant changes in the weddellite/whewellite ratio. The effect of the combination of additives on this ratio does not obey the law of additivity. The content of weddellite in the systems containing a representative set of both organic acids and environmental ions is ~20 wt%, which is in good agreement with natural systems.

Accumulation of Elements in Biodeposits on the Stone Surface in Urban Environment. Case Studies from Saint Petersburg, Russia

The pattern of elements accumulation in biodeposits formed by living organisms and extracellular products of their metabolism (biofouling, primary soils) on different bedrocks (of the monuments of Historical necropoleis in Saint Petersburg) were studied by a complex of biological and mineralogical methods (optical microscopy, SEM, EDX, XRD, ICP MS, XRFS). The content of 46 elements in biodeposits with various communities of microorganisms is determined. The model recreating the picture of the input and selective accumulation of elements in biodeposits on the stone surface in outdoor conditions is assumed. It is shown that the main contribution to the elemental composition of biodeposits is made by the environment and the composition of the microbial community. The contribution of leaching under the action of microbial metabolites of mineral grains, entering biodeposits from the environment, is significantly greater than that of the underlying rock.

Calcium has protective impact on cadmium-induced toxicity in lichens

Eventual protective action of calcium (Ca, 100 or 1000 μM) against cadmium (Cd, 10 or 100 μM) toxicity in common lichen Hypogymnia physodes after 24 h of exposure was studied. Total Cd reached 482 and 2801 μg/g DW in 10 and 100 μM Cd treatments while Ca content reached over 23 mg/g DW in 1000 μM Ca treatment. Ca suppressed Cd accumulation by 23 and 38% in total fraction and completely in absorbed fraction. Fluorescence microscopy of Cd and Ca ions revealed good correlation with quantitative data. Cd stimulated increase in ROS formation and lipid peroxidation as detected using fluorescent reagents and quantification of H₂O₂ while co-application of Ca suppressed these effects. Formation of nitric oxide was mainly affected by cadmium. Cd depleted amount of amino acids but proteins or phenols remained unaffected by Cd or Ca. On the contrary, sum of thiols, reduced glutathione and ascorbic acid were depleted by Cd but reversed mainly by higher Ca dose. Among organic acids, only Cd-induced depletion of citric acid content was reversed by Ca. Data indicate that ameliorative effect of Ca under Cd excess in lichens is comparable with effect in plants and metabolic responses in various life lineages are discussed.

Biodeterioration Patterns and Their Interpretation for Potential Applications to Stone Conservation: A Hypothesis from Allelopathic Inhibitory Effects of Lichens on the Caestia Pyramid (Rome)

The colonisation of stone by different organisms often leaves biodeterioration patterns (BPs) on the surfaces even if their presence is no longer detectable. Peculiar weathering patterns on monuments and rocks, such as pitting phenomena, were recognised as a source of information on past colonisers and environmental conditions. The evident inhibition areas for new bio-patinas observed on the marble blocks of the Caestia Pyramid in Rome, recognisable as tracks of previous colonisations, seem a source for developing new natural products suitable for restoration activities. To hypothesise past occurring communities and species, which gave rise to such BPs, we carried out both in situ observations and analyses of the rich historical available iconography (mainly photographs). Moreover, we analysed literature on the lichen species colonising carbonate stones used in Roman sites. Considering morphology, biochemical properties and historical data on 90 lichen species already reported in Latium archaeological sites, we suppose lichen species belonging to the genus Circinaria (Aspicilia s.l.) to be the main aetiological agent of such peculiar BPs. These results seem relevant to highlight the long-lasting allelopathic properties of some lichen substances potentially applicable as a natural product to control colonisation, improving the environmental and economical sustainability of stone restoration.

Synthesis and Characterization of (Ca,Sr)[C2O4]∙nH2O Solid Solutions: Variations of Phase Composition, Crystal Morphologies and in Ionic Substitutions

To study strontium (Sr) incorporation into calcium oxalates (weddellite and whewellite), calcium-strontium oxalate solid solutions (Ca,Sr)[C2O4]∙nH2O (n = 1, 2) are synthesized and studied by a complex of methods: powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) spectroscopy. Two series of solid solutions, isomorphous (Ca,Sr)[C2O4]·(2.5 − x)H2O) (space group I4/m) and isodimorphous Ca[C2O4]·H2O(sp.gr. P21/c)–Sr[C2O4]·H2O(sp.gr. P 1 - ), are experimentally detected. The morphogenetic regularities of their crystallization are revealed. The factors controlling this process are discussed.
