Abstract
Herein, I will review our efforts to develop a comprehensive and robust model for the estimation of the first oxidation potential, Ep1, and antioxidant activity, AA, of flavonoids that would, besides enabling fast and cheap prediction of Ep1 and AA for a flavonoid of interest, help us explain the relationship between Ep1, AA and electronic structure. The model development went forward with enlarging the set of flavonoids and, that way, we had to learn how to deal with the structural peculiarities of some of the 35 flavonoids from the final calibration set, for which the Ep1 measurements were all made in our laboratory. The developed models were simple quadratic models based either on atomic spin densities or differences in the atomic charges of the species involved in any of the three main oxidation mechanisms. The best model takes into account all three mechanisms of oxidation, single electron transfer-proton transfer (SET-PT), sequential proton loss electron transfer (SPLET) and hydrogen atom transfer (HAT), yielding excellent statistics (R2 = 0.970, S.E. = 0.043).

Abstract
The composition of essential oils varies according to culture conditions and climate, which induces a need for simple and inexpensive characterization methods close to the place of extraction. This appears particularly important for developing countries. Herein, we develop an analytical strategy to determine the thymol content in Ocimum Gratissimum, a medicinal plant from Benin. The protocol is based on electrochemical techniques (cyclic and square wave voltammetry) implemented with a low cost potentiostat. Thymol is a phenol derivative and was directly oxidized at the electrode surface. We had to resort to submillimolar concentrations (25-300 μM) in order to minimize production of phenol oligomers that passivate the electrode. We worked first on two essential oils and realized that in one of them the thymol concentration was below our detection method. These results were confirmed by gas chromatography - mass spectrometry. Furthermore, we optimized the detection protocol to analyze an infusion made directly from the leaves of the plant. Finally, we studied whether the cost of the electrochemical cell may also be minimized by using pencil lead as working and counter electrodes.

Abstract
This work reports an environmentally friendly and economically feasible green synthesis of monometallic oxides (SnO2 and WO3) and their corresponding mixed metal oxide (SnO2/WO3-x) nanostructures from the aqueous Psidium guajava leaf extract for light-driven catalytic degradation of a major industrial contaminant, methylene blue (MB). P. guajava is a rich source of polyphenols that acts as a bio-reductant as well as a capping agent in the synthesis of nanostructures. The chemical composition and redox behavior of the green extract were investigated by liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry and cyclic voltammetry, respectively. Results acquired by X-ray diffraction and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy confirm the successful formation of crystalline monometallic oxides (SnO2 and WO3) and bimetallic SnO2/WO3-x hetero-nanostructures capped with polyphenols. The structural and morphological aspects of the synthesized nanostructures were analyzed by transmission electron microscopy and scanning electron microscopy coupled with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. Photocatalytic activity of the synthesized monometallic and hetero-nanostructures was investigated for the degradation of MB dye under UV light irradiation. Results indicate a higher photocatalytic degradation efficiency for mixed metal oxide nanostructures (93.5%) as compared to pristine monometallic oxides SnO2 (35.7%) and WO3 (74.5%). The hetero-metal oxide nanostructures prove to be better photocatalysts with reusability up to 3 cycles without any loss in degradation efficiency or stability. The enhanced photocatalytic efficiency is attributed to a synergistic effect in the hetero-nanostructures, efficient charge transportation, extended light absorption, and increased adsorption of dye due to the enlarged specific surface area.

Abstract
In this paper, I tested our quadratic regression models for the estimation of flavonoid oxidation potentials based on spin populations, the differences in the net atomic charges between a cation and a neutral flavonoid, between a radical and an anion of a flavonoid, and between a radical and a neutral flavonoid on a larger set of flavonoids (N = 35). By including six new flavonoids (5,6,7-trihydroxyflavone, 3,3',4',7-tetrahydroxyflavone, 3,7-dihydroxyflavone, 4',7-dihydroxyflavone, 4',5,7-trihydroxyisoflavone, and 6-hydroxyflavone), we created a respectable calibration set of 35 flavonoids with their oxidation potentials all measured at the same conditions by the same experimentalist. The best model was based on the mean values of the three variables using differences in the net atomic charges (R 2 = 0.970, S.E. = 0.043), which are connected with the three different mechanisms of electrochemical oxidation, SET-PT, SPLET, and HAT.

Abstract
This study describes a molecular dynamics computational modelling informed bioengineering of nano-scaled 2-D hydronium jarosite. More specifically, a phyto-engineering approach using green nano-chemistry and agro-waste in the form of avocado seed natural extract was utilized as a green, economic, and eco-friendly approach to synthesize this unique mineral at the nanoscale via the reduction of iron (II) sulphate heptahydrate. The nanoproduct which was found to exhibit a quasi-2D structure was characterized using a multi-technique approach to describe its morphological, optical, electrochemical, and magnetic properties. Radial distribution function and electrostatic potential maps revealed that flavone, a phenolic compound within the avocado seed natural extract, has a higher affinity of interaction with the nanoparticle's surface, whilst vanillic acid has a higher wetting tendency and thus a lower affinity for interacting with the hydronium jarosite nanoparticle surface compared to other phytoactive compounds. XRD and HRTEM results indicated that the nanoscale product was representative of crystalline rhombohedral hydronium jarosite in the form of quasi-triangular nanosheets decorated on the edges with nanoparticles of approximately 5.4 nm diameter that exhibited significant electrochemical and electroconductive behaviours. Magnetic studies further showed a diamagnetic behaviour based on the relationship of the inverse susceptibility of the nanomaterial with temperature sweep.

Abstract
The therapeutic potential of medicinal plants is noted because of the presence of varieties of biochemicals. The monoterpenes, like nerol, estragole, and 3,7-dimethyl-1-octanol, have been reported for antimicrobial, antifungal, anthelmintic, and antioxidant activities. This study evaluated the toxic, cytotoxic, and oxidant/antioxidant effects of these compounds by several in vitro (DPPH and ABTS radical scavenging, and ferric reducing potential), ex vivo (hemolysis), and in vivo (Artemia Salina and Saccharomyces cerevisiae) assays. Results suggest that estragole and 3,7-dimethyl-1-octanol at 31.25-500 μg/mL did not exhibit significant cytotoxic effects in the A. Salina and hemolysis tests. Nerol showed significant cytotoxic effects on these test systems at all test concentrations. The monoterpenes showed radical (ABTS•+ and DPPH•) scavenging capacities in a concentration-dependent manner in vitro tests. However, they did not oxidize the genetic material of S. cerevisiae (SODWT, Sod1Δ, Sod2Δ, Sod1/Sod2Δ, Cat1Δ, and Cat1Δ/Sod1Δ) lines. Among the three monoterpenes, nerol may be a good candidate for antioxidant and anti-tumor therapies.

Lemon balm is herbal tea used for soothing stomach cramps, indigestion, and nausea. Rosmarinic acid (RA) is one of its chemical constituents known for its therapeutic potentials against cancer, inflammatory and neuronal diseases such as the treatment of neurofibromatosis or prevention from Alzheimer’s diseases (AD). Despite efforts, recovery and purification of RA in high yields has not been entirely successful. Here, we report its aqueous extraction with optimal conditions and decipher the structure by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. Using various physical–chemical and biological assays, we highlight its anti-aggregation inhibition potentials against the formation of Tau filaments, one of the hallmarks of AD. We then examine its anti-cancer potentials through reduction of the mitochondrial reductase activity in tumor cells and investigate its electrochemical properties by cyclic voltammetry. Our data demonstrates that RA is a prominent biologically active natural product with therapeutic potentials for drug discovery in AD, cancer therapy and inflammatory diseases.

Abstract
The analysis of antioxidants in different foodstuffs has become an active area of research, which has led to many recently developed antioxidant assays. Many antioxidants exhibit inherent electroactivity, and, therefore, the use of electrochemical methods could be a viable approach for evaluating the overall antioxidant activity of a matrix of nutraceuticals without the need for adding reactive species. Green tea is believed to be a healthy beverage due to a number of therapeutic benefits. Catechin, one of its constituents, is an important antioxidant and possesses free radical scavenging abilities. The present paper describes the electrochemical properties of three screen-printed electrodes (SPEs), the first one based on carbon nanotubes (CNTs), the second one based on gold nanoparticles (GNPs) and the third one based on carbon nanotubes and gold nanoparticles (CNTs-GNPs). All three electrodes were modified with the laccase (Lac) enzyme, using glutaraldehyde as a cross-linking agent between the amino groups on the laccase and aldehyde groups of the reticulation agent. As this enzyme is a thermostable catalyst, the performance of the biosensors has been greatly improved. Electro-oxidative properties of catechin were investigated using cyclic voltammetry (CV) and differential pulse voltammetry (DPV), and these demonstrated that the association of CNTs with GNPs significantly improved the sensitivity and selectivity of the biosensor. The corresponding limit of detection (LOD) was estimated to be 5.6 × 10−8 M catechin at the CNT-Lac/SPE, 1.3 × 10−7 M at the GNP-Lac/SPE and 4.9 × 10−8 M at the CNT-GNP-Lac/SPE. The biosensors were subjected to nutraceutical formulations containing green tea in order to study their catechin content, using CNT-GNP-Lac/SPE, through DPV. Using a paired t-test, the catechin content estimated was in agreement with the manufacturer’s specification. In addition, the relationship between the CNT-GNP-Lac/SPE response at a specific potential and the antioxidant activity of nutraceuticals, as determined by conventional spectrophotometric methods (DPPH, galvinoxyl and ABTS), is discussed in the context of developing a fast biosensor for the relative antioxidant activity quantification.

Abstract
The focus of this work was to develop a simple electrochemical method for the determination of vitamin C (VitC) by using a specially constructed microelectrode made from pyrolytic graphite sheet (PGS). A procedure for quantifying VitC in a real sample was established. VitC shows a single quasi-reversible reaction. The method was optimized, and analytical determination was performed by using cyclic voltammetry and square wave voltammetry for electroanalytical purposes. The obtained results show a linear response of the PGS electrode in a wide concentrations range. For the lower concentration range, 0.18–7.04 µg L−1, the sensitivity is 11.7 µAcm−2/mgL−1, while for the higher concentration range, 10.6–70.4 µg L−1, the sensitivity is 134 µAcm−2/mgL−1, preserving the linearity of 0.998 and 0.999. The second objective was to determine the effect of the addition of five different types of “green” biowaste on plant growth, VitC content, and antioxidant activity in arugula (Eruca sativa L.) using the developed method. After three weeks of cultivation, small differences in growth and large differences in certain nutritional characteristics were observed. The addition of black coffee makes the soil slightly alkaline and causes a significant increase in VitC content and antioxidant activity.

Abstract
The purpose of our research was to develop a new enzymatic biosensor, GPH-MnPc-Tyr/SPE, using as a support screen-printed carbon electrode (SPE) modified with graphene, manganese phthalocyanine, and tyrosinase, with the aim of developing sensitive detection of chlorogenic acid (CGA). To immobilise tyrosinase on the sensor surface, crosslinking with the glutaraldehyde technique was used, thus increasing the enzyme bioactivity on this electrode. The modified electrode has a great catalytic effect on the electrochemical redox of chlorogenic acid, compared to the simple, unmodified SPE. The peak current response of the biosensor for CGA was linear in the range of 0.1-10.48 μM, obtaining a calibration curve using cyclic voltammetry (CV) and square-wave voltammetry (SWV). Subsequently, the detection limit (LOD) and the quantification limit (LOQ) were determined, obtaining low values, i.e., LOD = 1.40 × 10-6 M; LOQ = 4.69 × 10-6 M by cyclic voltammetry and LOD = 2.32 × 10-7 M; LOQ = 7.74 × 10-7 M, by square-wave voltammetry (SWV). These results demonstrate that the method is suitable for the detection of CGA in nutraceutical formulations. Therefore, GPH-MnPc-Tyr/SPE was used for the quantitative determination of CGA in three products, by means of cyclic voltammetry. The Folin-Ciocalteu spectrophotometric assay was used for the validation of the results, obtaining a good correlation between the voltammetric method and the spectrophotometric one, at a confidence level of 95%. Moreover, by means of the DPPH method, the antioxidant activity of the compound was determined, thus demonstrating the antioxidant effect of CGA in all nutraceuticals studied.

Abstract
An electrochemical sensor for the determination of some polyphenolic compounds such as Gallic acid (GA) and Galloyl esters was developed using the activated pencil lead electrode (APLE). At first, a study has been made of the optimum conditions for electrochemical activation of the pencil lead electrode. Potentiodynamic and potentiostatic strategies were investigated for activation of the pencil lead electrode and the results show that the potentiodynamic pretreatment gives better performance toward measurement of the polyphenolic compounds. Electrochemical properties of GA were investigated using chronoamperometry and cyclic voltammetry; and some thermodynamic and kinetic variables such as α, n α, and D were calculated. Sensitive differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) technique was applied for the determination of Gallic acid and Galloyl esters in different samples. Enhanced oxidation peak currents of Gallic acid were observed at APLE when compared with non-activated PLE. The calibration graph has two linear ranges of 0.49-24.3 µM and 0.07-0.83 mM, and the obtained limit of detection for S/N = 3 was 0.25 µM. Adsorptive stripping differential pulse voltammetry (AdSDPV) was also conducted to determine Gallic acid and Galloyl esters in sub-micromolar concentration range. Using the AdSDPV method, the limit of detection was improved and calculated to be 5.2 nM. The proposed method was successfully applied for quantification of the total concentration of Gallic acid and Galloyl esters in a variety of real samples such as black and green tea, and mango juice samples, and desirable recovery values indicated the good accuracy of the developed sensor.

Abstract
In the current study, the antioxidant activity of traditional homemade fruit vinegars (HMV) was estimated by measuring the rate of homogeneous redox reaction with 2,2'-azino-bis-3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid radical cation (ABTS•+) using cyclic voltammetry. The antioxidant capacity of six HMV produced using traditional methods and the physicochemical characterization were measured in different vinegar production steps throughout a double spontaneous fermentation process, i.e., without any addition of yeasts or acetic acid bacteria. Their antioxidant capacity was compared with seven fruit commercial vinegars (ComV). Furthermore, the antioxidant capacity was independently measured with the TEAC (Trolox equivalent antioxidant capacity) assay, aiming at correlating with the electrochemical experimental data. Obtained results from both methods, the electrochemical and TEAC assays, interestingly indicated that all HMV have at least 10 times higher antioxidant activity than ComV. Furthermore, the large range of values for antioxidant capacity in samples of commercial vinegars from apples attested the importance of the raw material quality and technological procedures. The positive correlation between total phenolic content and antioxidant capacity measured by the two type of assays indicated that rose hip homemade vinegar (HMV5) has the highest antioxidant capacity. In contrast, the lowest levels of phenolic compounds and antioxidant capacity were found in apple and persimmon homemade vinegars (HMV1 and HMV6, respectively) which indicated that the type of fruit is crucial towards the production of high-quality vinegars. In this way, the use of traditional processes for the production of fruit vinegars proved to be very promising in terms of producing differentiated vinegars and, concomitantly, reaching high levels of health-promoting antioxidant capacities.

Abstract
Every year, large quantities of stems and pits are generated during sweet cherry processing, without any substantial use. Although stems are widely recognized by traditional medicine, detailed and feasible information about their bioactive composition or biological value is still scarce, as well as the characterization of kernels. Therefore, we conducted a study in which bioactivity potential of extracts from stems and kernels of four sweet cherry cultivars (Early Bigi (grown under net cover (C) and without net cover (NC)), Burlat, Lapins, and Van) were examined. The assays included antioxidant (by 2,2′-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic) acid (ABTS), 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and β-carotene-linoleic acid bleaching assays), and antibacterial activities against important Gram negative and Gram positive bacterial human isolates. Profile and individual phenolic composition of each extract were determined by High-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) analysis. Extracts from stems of cv. Lapins and kernels of Early Bigi NC presented high levels of total phenolics, flavonoids, ortho-diphenols and saponins. Excepting for cv. Early Bigi NC, major phenolic compounds identified in stems and kernels were sakuranetin and catechin, respectively. In cv. Early Bigi NC the most abundant compounds were ellagic acid for stems and protocatechuic acid for kernels. In all extracts, antioxidant activities showed a positive correlation with the increments in phenolic compounds. Antimicrobial activity assays showed that only stem’s extracts were capable of inhibiting the growth of Gram positive isolates. This new data is intended to provide new possibilities of valorization of these by-products and their valuable properties.

Abstract
The component profiles of apricot, grape, and black currant pomace extracts have been analyzed using HPLC coupled to diode-array detection and tandem mass spectrometry (HPLC-DAD-MS). The predominant components in grape, apricot, and black currant pomace extracts were phenolic acids and flavonols. The redox behavior of apricot, black currant, and grape pomace water extracts was evaluated by means of cyclic voltammetry. Also, individual substances mainly present in the extracts were analyzed. The results of electrochemical testing were compared to traditional chemical techniques of potassium ferricyanide reduction (FRAP) and phosphomolybdenum assay, and fair agreement was established. The 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging assay and 2,2'-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulphonic acid) (ABTS) radical scavenging assays were applied in order to estimate antioxidant activity. The reducing power of the grape extract was found to be higher than that of the apricot and black currant extracts in both potassium ferricyanide reduction (FRAP) and phosphomolybdenum methods.

Ginkgo biloba is one of the most important sources of active compounds, mainly flavonoids and phenolic compounds. Due to its importance related to pharmaceutical practice, the making of a qualitative and quantitative method for the detection and quantification of active compounds from Ginkgo biloba pharmaceutical products is desirable. In this study, the content of biological active compounds from Ginkgo biloba products was estimated using cyclic voltammetry. The electrochemical determination of active compounds was carried out by using a screen-printed carbon electrode modified with carbon nanotubes. The studies regarding parameter optimization were made using solutions containing potassium ferrocyanide and catechol, respectively. In both cases, the redox processes of studied compounds was observed, which were controlled by the diffusion phenomenon. We analyzed two pharmaceutical products containing Ginkgo biloba, a RX product (recipe medicine requires a medical prescription to be dispensed) and an OTC (Over-The-Counter, which can be obtained without a prescription) product. The cyclic voltammograms of the two products showed two redox processes due to the antioxidant properties of the products. It was found that the RX product had a greater content of active compounds compared to the OTC product. Therefore, the voltammetric method has great utility for the determination of compounds with redox properties from pharmaceutical products containing Ginkgo biloba.

Abstract
In this study, 11 apple cultivars were characterized by their total phenolic content (TPC) and total flavonoid content (TFC) and antioxidant, reducing, and chelating capacity by 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) test, cyclic voltammetry (CV), and ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) assays; and ferrous ion chelating capacity. The phenolic compounds in flesh and peel were determined by liquid chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry and diode array detector (HPLC-DAD-MS/MS) and their electroactivity by CV. The results showed higher TPC, TFC, and antioxidant capacity by DPPH test in the peels of all apple cultivars as compared to the respective flesh. The peel extracts also showed two-fold higher FRAP values as compared to the flesh extracts. The reducing capacity of the peel and flesh determined by CV measurements confirmed the results achieved by spectrophotometric methods of evaluating antioxidant capacity. There was no significant difference in chelating capacity in the peel and flesh. The HPLC-DAD-MS/MS analysis showed the presence of 11 phenolic compounds in the peel and flesh which varied in antioxidant, reducing, and chelating activity. The order of the phenolic compound content in flesh and peel in Quinte cultivar, which showed the highest antioxidant capacity, was as follows: epicatechin > chlorogenic acid > quercetin 3-arabinoside > quercetin 3-glucoside > cyanidin 3-galactoside > quercetin 3-rhamnoside > catechin > phloridzin > rutin > phloretin = quercetin. CV results were highly correlated with those obtained by spectrophotometry and HPLC-DAD-MS/MS, providing evidence to support the use of cyclic voltammetry as a rapid method to determine the phenolic profile and reducing the power of apple flesh and peel. The association between antioxidant assays and phenolic compound content showed that the highest contribution to the antioxidant capacity of apple peel and flesh was provided by catechin, epicatechin, and cyadinin-3-galactoside, while phloretin, phloridzin, and chlorogenic acid were the main contributors to chelating activity. Results from this study clearly indicate that removing the peel from apples may induce a significant loss of antioxidants.

Abstract
Our objective in this review article is to find out relevant information about methods of determination of antioxidant activity of silver nanoparticles. There are many studies dealing with mentioned problem and herein we summarize the knowledge about methods evaluating the antioxidant activity of silver nanoparticles reported so far. Many authors declare better antioxidant activity of silver nanoparticles compared to the extract used for synthesis of them. In this review, we focused on methods of antioxidant activity determination in detail to find out novel and perspective techniques to solve the general problems associated with the determination of antioxidant activity of silver nanoparticles.

Abstract
Antioxidants are molecules that neutralize reactive oxygen species in the human body, reportedly reducing the risk of cancer and cardiovascular diseases. With multiple dietary products being advertised by their assumed high antioxidant concentration, the need for a proper way of analyzing antioxidant containing beverages becomes apparent. In this research, the antioxidant nature of teas, wines and (superfood) juices is investigated using staircase voltammetry (SV). A new parameter is proposed and evaluated to characterize the antioxidant nature, including its antioxidant capacity and activity: the Antioxidant Index (AI). AI showed green tea to have the best antioxidant nature of teas and red wine to be a better antioxidant than white wine. Superfoods did not show better antioxidant behavior than non-superfoods. AI proved to be a promising way of investigating the antioxidant nature of beverages.

Abstract
Numerous studies have shown, rather disappointingly, that isolated bioactive phytochemicals are not as biologically effective as natural plant products. Such a discrepancy may be explained by the concept of food synergy, which was verified in this research for cocoa extract versus its major components with regard to cancer chemoprevention. The evaluation embraced the relationship between redox properties evaluated in cell-free systems with the aid of free radicals scavenging method and differential pulse voltammetry, and redox associated anticarcinogenic activities (cellular antioxidant activity, cytotoxicity, nutrigenomic activity) in human colon adenocarcinoma cell line exposed to either cocoa powder extract or artificial mixtures of cocoa bioactives at matching concentrations. In contrast to expectations, our results showed that the stepwise enrichment with antioxidants caused no gradual increase in the antioxidant activity of the model mixtures; also, these model mixtures did not reach the reducing potential of cocoa in the cell-free systems or cellular model employed. Further, the biological activities examined in colon adenocarcinoma cells did not alter in a stepwise manner that could reflect the gradual changes in composition of bioactive ingredients. In conclusion, the experiments presented here showed that the growing complexity of a mixture of phytochemicals seems to create a new redox bioactive substance rather than enrich the mixture with new activities, characteristic of the compound added. It follows that no simple, predictable relationship can be expected between the chemopreventive potential and the composition of real food items containing a complicated set of non-toxic redox active ingredients. Our observations suggest that the interactions between different bioactive compounds and food matrix components are cooperating factors determining the final bioactivity of foods.

Abstract
Natural phenolic compounds are abundant in the vegetable kingdom, occurring mainly as secondary metabolites in a wide variety of chemical structures. Around 10,000 different plant phenolic derivatives have been isolated and identified. This review provides an exhaustive overview concerning the electron transfer reactions in natural polyphenols, from the point of view of their in vitro antioxidant and/or pro-oxidant mode of action, as well as their identification in highly complex matrixes, for example, fruits, vegetables, wine, food supplements, relevant for food quality control, nutrition, and health research. The accurate assessment of polyphenols' redox behavior is essential, and the application of the electrochemical methods in routine quality control of natural products and foods, where the polyphenols antioxidant activity needs to be quantified in vitro, is of the utmost importance. The phenol moiety oxidation pathways and the effect of substituents and experimental conditions on their electrochemical behavior will be reviewed. The fundamental principles concerning the redox behavior of natural polyphenols, specifically flavonoids and other benzopyran derivatives, phenolic acids and ester derivatives, quinones, lignins, tannins, lignans, essential oils, stilbenes, curcuminoids, and chalcones, will be described. The final sections will focus on the electroanalysis of phenolic antioxidants in natural products and the electroanalytical evaluation of in vitro total antioxidant capacity.

Abstract
Abstract In this work, it was evaluated the phenolic content, redox behavior and antioxidant capacity of several selected teas and tisanes from Brazilian market. The samples were classified as simple (single herb) or composed (blend of two or more herbs). In addition, complementary multivariate statistical approaches were used to identify the correlation and interdependence between the amount of major phytocomponents, such as phenols and flavonoids, as well as the antioxidant activity of the products. Results showed that the total polyphenol and total flavonoid concentrations are correlated to thermodynamic feasibility of reactive oxygen species reduction. The statistical modeling differentiated the results datasets in principal components, whose flavonoid content presented itself as the main parameter to segregate data between simple and composed products. On the other hand, the whole polyphenol content, in both teas and tisanes, was more relevant regarding their antioxidant capacity than the flavonoids content. Considering that the manufactures do not display the real amount of each herb in the labels of the composed products, it was not possible to confirm whether the blends of several species lead to a substantial enhancement on their antioxidant capacity. Furthermore, the redox profile and overall polyphenol content suggest that the consumption of green and black teas as well as traditional yerba mate may be worthwhile in preventing ailments associated with oxidative stress in Brazilian population. Notwithstanding, further clinical studies are required to validate this hypothesis.

Abstract
Unreliable terminology and incompatible units of antioxidant activity/concentration expression lead to the failure of antioxidant clinical trials, ambiguity of conclusions about the effect of a chosen therapy in medicine and evaluation of food quality, diet, difficulties using information in monitoring the training process in sports, etc. Many different terms (antiradical activity, antioxidant activity, antioxidant capacity, antioxidant power, antioxidant ability) and methods: Trolox equivalent capacity assay (TEAC), Ferric Reducing Antioxidant Power assay (FRAP), Cupric Reducing Antioxidant Capacity assay (CUPRAC), antioxidative activity assay (ABTS), the oxygen radical absorbance capacity (ORAC), and different options of electrochemical ones) proposed for the determination of antioxidants are described. Possible approaches to the development of this field of science and practice are considered.

Abstract
Polyphenols are important to human health thus making it interesting and necessary to identify and assess methods for their detection. Gallic acid (GA) is a well-known antioxidant compound, found in tea leaves, various fruits, fruit seeds and in fruit-derived foods and beverages. In this study, to electrochemically detect this compound and assess the potential for GA detection, different analytical conditions at pH values of 5.8, 7 and 8 were tried. Two types of device were used for GA detection: (1) Lazar ORP-146C reduction-oxidation microsensors, coupled with a Jenco device, for estimation of antioxidant capacities of different electroactive media, and (2) screen-printed carbon sensors coupled with a mobile PalmSens device using differential pulse voltammetry (qualitative and quantitative GA determination). These proposed methods were validated by analysing some real samples: wine, green tea, apple juice and serum fortified with GA. Detection was evaluated in terms of specific calibration curves, with low limit of detection (LOD) and limit of quantification (LOQ), low response time, and high sensitivities. The analytical characteristics obtained recommend these methods to be tested on more other types of real samples. Our proposed methods, used in the established conditions of pH, may have further application in other clinical, food or environmental samples analyses in which the results of total antioxidants contents are usually expressed in GA equivalents.

Abstract
The growing interest in the chemistry of unsaturated ring-fused 1,3-heterocycles, in this particular case 1,3-oxazines, arise in part from their versatile pharmacological applications. In the present article, the evaluation of the in vitro and ex vivo antioxidant activity of two cyclohexene-fused oxazines is discussed. The in vitro antioxidant activity was evaluated by trapping the ABTS and hydroxyl radicals as well as the inhibition of the enzyme acetyl-cholinesterase and hemolysis of erythrocytes by 2,2'-Azobis(2-amidinopropane) dihydrochloride (AAPH). The results suggest that both unsaturated 1,3-oxazines are auspicious sources of biologically active compounds with good antioxidant properties. In addition, a comprehensive analysis of the interaction between these heterocycles with 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and 2,2'-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulphonic acid) (ABTS) radicals, as well as the measurements of redox potential, provided evidence for a mechanism of antioxidant activity that takes place through electron transfer (ET) processes.

Abstract
Satureja kitaibelii Wierzb. ex Heuff. has a great importance in Serbian ethnopharmacology/herbal traditional medicine, as well as a flavoring food additive. Ethanol extract of aerial parts of Satureja kitaibelii analyzed by liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry revealed the presence of 18 compounds among which the most abundant were phenolic acids, flavonoids, jasmonic acid derivatives and rosmanol. The extracts were rich in total phenolics and flavonoid contents, while rosmarinic acid was the dominant compound (18.30-29.52 mg/g). As assessments of antioxidant properties of natural extracts are important because of their growing use in medicine and food industry, antioxidant activity of ethanol extracts of Satureja kitaibelii was analyzed by several assays. The half maximal scavenging capacity (SC50) of 2,2'-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl ranging from 71.20 to 125.65 μg/mL, the total antioxidant capacity from 272.37 to 714.12 mg ascorbic acid/g, and ferric ion reducing antioxidant power ranging from 0.74 to 1.94 μmol Fe/mg, clearly imply a significant antioxidant potential of Satureja kitaibelii. The extracts inhibit growth of Micrococcus luteus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa with inhibition zones 20-30 and 16-26 mm, respectively. Antioxidant and antibacterial activity of compounds identified in extracts suggest a great potential for Satureja kitaibelii application as valuable food ingredient.

Abstract
I have shown that by averaging antioxidant activity (AA) values measured by different methods it is possible to obtain an excellent correlation (R2=0.960) between the first electrochemical oxidation potential, Ep1, and AA. Separate correlations using the AA values obtained with each of the four methods [R2 were 0.561 for diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH), 0.849 for Folin Ciocalteu reagent (FCR), 0.848 for the ferric-reducing ability of plasma (FRAP), and 0.668 for the Trolox equivalent antioxidant capacity (TEAC)] were all worse, and in some cases not useful at all, such as the one for DPPH. Also, the sum of atomic orbital spin populations on the carbon atoms in the skeleton of radicals ( s(C) Σ AOSPRad), calculated with the semi-empirical parameterisation method 6 (PM6) in water, was used to correlate both Ep1 and AA, yielding R2=0.926 and 0.950, respectively. This showed to be a much better variable for the estimation of Ep1 and AA than the bond dissociation energy (BDE), R2=0.854 and 0.901 for Ep1 and AA, respectively, and especially the ionisation potential (IP), R2=0.445 and 0.435 for Ep1 and AA, respectively.

Abstract
In this work, we demonstrated proof-of-concept for the use of ion-selective electrodes (ISEs) as a promising tool for the assessment of total antioxidant capacity (TAC). Novel membrane sensors for 2,6-dichlorophenolindophenolate (DCPIP) ions were prepared and characterized. The sensors membranes were based on the use of either CuII-neocuproin/2,6-dichlorophenolindo-phenolate ([Cu(Neocup)2][DCPIP]2) (sensor I), or methylene blue/2,6-dichlorophenolindophenolate (MB/DCPIP) (sensor II) ion association complexes in a plasticized PVC matrix. The sensors revealed significantly enhanced response towards DCPIP ions over the concentration range 5.13 × 10−5–1.0 × 10−2 and 5.15 × 10−5–1.0 × 10−2 M at pH 7 with detection limits of 6.3 and 9.2 µg/mL with near-Nernstian slope of −56.2 ± 1.7 and −51.6 ± 2 mV/decade for sensors I and II, respectively. The effects of plasticizers and various foreign common ions were also tested. The sensors showed enhanced selectivity towards DCPIP over many other phenolic and inorganic ions. Long life span, high potential stability, high reproducibility, and fast response were also observed. Method validation was also verified by measuring the detection limit, linearity range, accuracy, precision, repeatability and between-day-variability. The sensors were introduced for direct determination of TAC in fresh and canned juice samples collected from local markets. The obtained results agreed fairly well with the data obtained by the standard method.

Abstract
5-bromo-2-(prop-2-yn-1-yloxy)benzaldehyde (compound 3) and 3,5-di-tert-butyl-2-(prop-2-
yn-1-yloxy)benzaldehyde (compound 5) were synthesized via nucleophilic substitution reactions.
Compound 5 showed higher antioxidant capacity with respect to compound 3 in all the four different
antioxidant activity methods used. Moreover, in phosphomolybdenum assay, compound 5, with 1.1
proportion value, showed almost the same total antioxidant capacity compared to universal trolox
standard. Furthermore, Broth microdilution method and agar disc diffusion tests demonstrated that the
same compound also exhibited good antibacterial activity towards the bacteria Bacillus subtilis. Finally,
both of the benzaldehyde compounds showed high antifungal activity against Aspergillus niger. In
this study, compound 5 (IC50: 54.3 µg/ml) showed significant cytotoxic activity against breast adenocarcinoma
cell line MCF-7 with respect to compound 3 (IC50: 173.4 µg/ml).

Abstract
Background:
Antioxidants are one of the important additives in food samples due to their
role in protecting human cells against the effects of free radicals. The analysis of antioxidants is
essential due to the role of antioxidants in improving body health.
Objective:
A square wave voltammetric sensor was fabricated for the determination of tert-butylhydroxyanisole
(TBHA) based on the application of CdO/SWCNTs and 1-methyl-3-butylimidazolium
chloride as mediators for the modification of carbon paste electrode (MBCl/CdO/SWCNTs/CPE). The
MBCl/CdO/SWCNTs/CPE improved the sensitivity of TBHA ~ 6.7 times and showed a linear dynamic
range 0.07-600 µM with detection limit 0.02 µA for the analysis of TBHA. The pH investigation confirmed
that electro-oxidation of TBHA occurred by exchanging two electrons and two protons. In addition,
the MBCl/CdO/SWCNTs/CPE was used for determination of TBHA in food samples.

Abstract
Analytical methodology for direct investigation of antioxidant systems continues to be a pressing research area. Consumer demand for natural products requires an increase in natural antioxidants; thus, fast, high-throughput, and cost-effective screening methods are in demand. In this study, square-wave voltammetry and gas chromatography with flame ionization detection (GC-FID) were used in conjunction to monitor antioxidant and fatty acid degradation, respectively, during the accelerated degradation of an omega-3 fatty acid sample. Butylated hydroxytoluene, sesamol, and rosemary extract were investigated as antioxidants. It was determined that voltammetry could be used to monitor the reduction in oxidation current, which provides a direct assessment method for the reduction of native antioxidant concentration throughout the accelerated degradation. Furthermore, results showed that voltammetry could be used to monitor fatty acid degradation similarly to the fatty acid methyl ester analysis routinely performed using gas chromatography separation. Both voltammetry and GC-FID methods reached similar conclusions about antioxidant quality and efficiency for omega-3 fatty acid protection.

Abstract
A simple, rapid and non-expensive method is proposed to determine phenolic monoterpenes such as thymol and carvacrol in essential oils of thyme and oregano. The linear sweep voltammetry based on glassy carbon electrodes was the electrochemical technique used. Thymol and carvacrol have one main oxidation peak in non-aqueous media centered at about 1.3 V vs. Ag/AgCl. The electron transfer process is mainly diffusion controlled. The calibration plots generated using the commercial standards of thymol and carvacrol were used to estimate the total content in real samples. The calibration plots were linear in the concentration range from 8.5 × 10-5 to 1.3 × 10-3 mol L-1 and 7.9 × 10-5 to 1.2 × 10-3 mol L-1 for thymol and carvacrol, respectively. Results obtained with the electrochemical method are in good agreement with those of the official method (gas chromatography). In addition, the analytical procedure does not require previous preparation of the sample or modification of the electrode surface. The electrochemical technique used is very simple to apply. Under these conditions, the methodology proposed is a good, simple and fast option to perform a quality control of essential oils.

Abstract
Electrochemical bioinspired sensor devices combined with chemometric tools have experienced great advances in the last years, being extensively used for food qualitative and quantitative evaluation, namely for olive oil analysis. Olive oil plays a key role in the Mediterranean diet, possessing unique and recognized nutritional and health properties as well as highly appreciated organoleptic characteristics. These positive attributes are mainly due to olive oil richness in bioactive compounds such as phenolic compounds. In addition, these compounds enhance their overall sensory quality, being mainly responsible for the usual olive oil pungency and bitterness. This review aims to compile and discuss the main research advances reported in the literature regarding the use of electrochemical sensor based-devices for assessing bioactive compounds in olive oil. The main advantages and limitations of these fast, accurate, bioinspired voltammetric, potentiometric and/or amperometric sensor green-approaches will be addressed, aiming to establish the future challenges for becoming a practical quality analytical tool for industrial and commercial applications.
