Synthesis and Dissolution of Metal Oxides in Ionic liquids and Deep Eutectic Solvents

Physicochemical properties of ammonium acetate / propionic acid as a novel deep eutectic solvent and its binary mixtures with water in (298.15-353.15) K range

Emergence of deep eutectic solvents as potential replacements for volatile organic solvents has attracted interest of the scientific community in diverse fields of applications. Compared to ionic liquids, which exhibit similarity in many respects with this new class of green solvents, deep eutectic solvents (DESs) show low toxicity, and are easy to prepare from cheap and abundantly available starting materials. Knowledge of physicochemical properties of DESs is a prerequisite for their safe applications in technological fields and to understand the nature of interactions present in these systems. Although physicochemical properties of choline chloride based DESs are widely investigated, similar information on ammonium acetate based DESs is scant. In this work, a novel ammonium acetate/propionic acid deep eutectic solvent (AA/PA DES) is reported which is prepared by mixing ammonium acetate (AA) and propionic acid (PA) in the 1:3 mol ratio and characterized by FTIR, 1H and 13C NMR, TGA and DSC techniques. The density (ρ), sound velocity (u), viscosity (η) and conductivity (κ) of the pure DES and its binary mixtures with water are investigated over the entire composition range and temperatures (298.15-353.15) K. The excess properties, VmE, KSE, Δη, and ΔG*E are calculated and corelated using Redlich-Kister equation (RKE). Temperature dependence of conductivity and viscosity is satisfactorily described by the Vogel - Fulcher - Tamman (VFT) equation rather than Arrhenius equation. The pure DES shows a wide electrochemical potential window ranging from - 1000 mV to + 1000 mV, which coupled with its better solubilizing characteristics, could be exploited for electrochemical work.

Key to High Performance Ion Hybrid Capacitor: Weakly Solvated Zinc Cations

Zinc ion hybrid capacitors suffer from lack of reversibility and dendrite formation. An electrolyte, based on a solution of a zinc salt in acetonitrile and tetramethylene sulfone, allows smooth zinc deposition with high coulombic efficiency in a Zn||stainless steel cell (99.6% for 2880 cycles at 1.0 mA cm-2 , 1.0 mAh cm-2 ). A Zn||Zn cell operates stably for at least 7940 h at 1.0 mA cm-2 with an area capacity of 10 mAh cm-2 , or 648 h at 90% depth of discharge and 1 mA cm-2 , 9.0 mAh cm-2 . Molecular dynamics simulations reveal the reason for the excellent reversibility: The zinc cation is only weakly solvated than in pure tetramethylene sulfone with the closest atoms at 3.3 to 3.8 Å. With this electrolyte, a zinc||activated-carbon hybrid capacitor exhibits an operating voltage of 2.0 to 2.5 V, an energy-density of 135 Wh kg-1 and a power-density of 613 W kg-1 at 0.5 A g-1 . At the very high current-density of 15 A g-1 , 29.3 Wh kg-1 and 14 250 W kg-1 are achieved with 81.2% capacity retention over 9000 cycles.

Tuneable-by-design copper oxide nanoparticles in ionic liquid nanofluids

In this study, copper oxide nanoparticles (CuO-NPs) were synthesised in an ionic liquid, [C2MIm][CnHnCO2], and the respective copper(II) carboxylate precursors. Heating the solution to 120 °C caused a colour change from blue to red, indicating a change in copper salt coordination and nanoparticle formation. Crystallography and UV-Vis spectroscopy were used to monitor the transition upon temperature changes. The particle formation was characterised using TEM and SWAXS analyses. The results showed that different anion chain lengths led to different particle sizes. When using copper(II) acetate precursors, the transformation resulted in CuO(I,II) clusters (<1 nm), depending on the imidazolium-based cation used. However, using a copper(II) octanoate precursor, small CuO-NPs in the range of 10-25 nm were formed, while larger CuO-NPs were obtained using a copper(II) butanoate precursor in the range of 10-61 nm.

A review on natural based deep eutectic solvents (NADESs): fundamentals and potential applications in removing heavy metals from soil

Natural based deep eutectic solvent (NADES) is a promising green solvent to replace the conventional soil washing solvent due to the environmental benign properties such as low toxicity, high biodegradability, high polarity or hydrophilicity, and low cost of fabrication process. The application of NADES is intensively studied in the extraction of organic compounds or natural products from vegetations or organic matters. Conversely, the use of the solvent in removing heavy metals from soil is severely lacking. This review focuses on the potential application of NADES as a soil washing agent to remove heavy metal contaminants. Hydrophilicity is an important feature of a NADES to be used as a soil washing solvent. In this context, choline chloride is often used as hydrogen bond acceptor (HBA) whereby choline chloride based NADESs showed excellent performance in the extraction of various solutes in the past studies. The nature of NADES along with its chemistry, preparation and designing methods as well as potential applications were comprehensively reviewed. Subsequently, related studies on choline chloride-based NADES in heavy metal polluted soil remediation were also reviewed. Potential applications in removing other soil contaminants as well as the limitations of NADES were discussed based on the current advancements of soil washing and future research directions were also proposed.

Structural Investigation of Technetium Dibutylphosphate Species Using X-ray Absorption Fine Structure Spectroscopy

The speciation of Tc after the extraction of Tc(IV) from H2O and 1 M HNO3 by dibutylphosphoric acid (HDBP) in dodecane has been studied by X-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS) spectroscopy. Results show the formation of dimeric species with Tc2O2 and Tc2O units, and the formulas [Tc2O2(DBP·HDBP)4] (1) and [Tc2O(NO3)2(DBP)2(DBP·HDBP)2] (2) were, respectively, proposed for the species extracted from H2O and 1 M HNO3. The interatomic Tc-Tc distances found in the Tc2O2 and Tc2O units [2.55(3) and 3.57(4) Å, respectively] are similar to the ones found in Tc(IV) dinuclear species. It is likely that the speciation of Tc(IV) in dodecane is due to the extraction of a species with a Tc2O unit for (2) and to the redissolution of a Tc(IV)-DBP solid for (1). The XAFS results for (1) and (2) were compared to that obtained for the extraction of Tc(IV) with TBP/HDBP/dodecane from 0.5 M HNO3, (3) which highlight the formation of Tc mononuclear nitrate species {i.e., [Tc(NO3)3(DBP)] or [Tc(NO3)2(DBP·HDBP)]}. These results confirm the importance of the preparation and speciation of the Tc(IV) aqueous solutions prior to extraction and how much this influences and drives the final Tc speciation in organic extraction. These studies outline the complexity of Tc separation chemistry and provide insights into the behavior of Tc during the reprocessing of used nuclear fuel.

Critical Investigation of Betaine Hydrochloride-Based Deep Eutectic Solvent for Ionometallurgical Metal Production

The applicability of a deep eutectic solvent (DES) consisting of betainium hydrochloride, urea and glycerol is examined with respect to ionometallurgical metal extraction and compared with the ionic liquid (IL) betainium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide ([Hbet][NTf2 ]). The DES dissolves numerous metal oxides, where not only betaine and chloride act as stabilizing ligands, but also nascent ammonia seems to be essential. From such solutions, cobalt, copper, zinc, tin, lead, and even vanadium can be electrodeposited, demonstrating the feasibility of ionometallurgy. However, repeated recycling of the DES is not conceivable. NMR spectroscopy and mass spectrometry identify numerous decomposition reactions taking place at 60 °C already. The by-products that are formed not only make recycling more difficult, but also pose a toxicity problem. The opportunities and obstacles of DESs and ILs for their application in ionometallurgy are critically discussed. It is shown that a thorough understanding of the underlying chemical processes is critical.

Cobalt Deposition from Ionothermally Dissolved Cobalt Oxides

Owing to the environmental problems of numerous metal production processes, there is a growing need for more energy-efficient approaches. Cobalt is considered a strategic element that is extracted not only from ores but also from spent Li-ion batteries. One promising new approach is ionometallurgy, which is the extraction of metal oxides by ionic liquids (ILs). This study concerns new investigations into ionometallurgical processing of CoO, Co₃ O₄ , and LiCoO₂ in the IL betainium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide, [Hbet][NTf₂ ]. Three crystal structures of cobalt-betaine complex compounds and combined spectroscopic and diffraction studies provide insights into the dissolution process. In addition, an optimized dissolution procedure for metal oxides is presented, avoiding the previously reported decomposition of the IL. Subsequent cobalt electrodeposition is only possible from cationic complex species, highlighting the importance of a thorough understanding of the complex equilibria. The presented method is also compared to other recently reported approaches.

N-heterocyclic carbene-mediated oxidation of copper(I) in an imidazolium ionic liquid

The aerobic oxidation of copper(I) to copper(II) was studied in the ionic liquid (IL) 1-n-butyl-3-methylimidazolium acetate [BMIm][OAc]. Temperatures above 100 °C promote the deprotonation of the C2 atom of the imidazolium ring and the dissolution of CuCl. 1H and 13C NMR spectra indicate the formation of the N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) complex [NHC] CuICl under inert conditions. Upon aerobic oxidation, air-stable blue-green crystals of [BMIm]2[CuII 2(OAc)4Cl2] precipitate in high yield and the NHC is recovered. X-ray diffraction on a single-crystal of the complex salt revealed a monoclinic structure with space group P21/n. The centrosymmetric dinuclear acetate complex [Cu2(OAc)4Cl2]2– has the paddle-wheel motif and is weakly paramagnetic.

Zinc Electrode Cycling in Deep Eutectic Solvent Electrolytes: An Electrochemical Study

Among post-lithium ion battery technologies, rechargeable chemistries with Zn anodes bear notable technological promise owing to their high theoretical energy density, lower manufacturing cost, availability of raw materials and inherent safety. However, Zn anodes, when employed in aqueous electrolytes, suffer from hydrogen evolution, passivation, and shape changes. Alternative electrolytes can help tackle these issues, preserving the green and safe characteristics of aqueous-based ones. Deep eutectic solvents (DESs) are promising green and low-cost non-aqueous solvents for battery electrolytes. Specifically, the cycling of Zn anodes in DESs is expected to be reversible, chiefly owing to their dendrite-suppression capability. Nevertheless, apart from a few studies on Zn plating, insight into the cathodic-anodic electrochemistry of Zn in DESs is still very limited. In view of developing DES-based battery electrolytes, it is crucial to consider that a potential drawback might be their low ionic conductivity. Water molecules can be added to the eutectic mixtures by up to 40% to increase the diffusion coefficient of the electroactive species and lower the electrolyte viscosity without destroying the eutectic nature. In this study, we address the electrochemistry of Zn in two different hydrated DESs (ChU and ChEG with ~30% H₂O). Fundamental electrokinetic and electrocrystallization studies based on cyclic voltammetry and chronoamperometry at different cathodic substrates are completed with a galvanostatic cycling test of Zn|Zn symmetric CR2032 coin cells, SEM imaging of electrodes and in situ SERS spectroscopy. This investigation concludes with the proposal of a specific DES/H₂O/ZnSO₄-based electrolyte that exhibits optimal functional performance, rationalized on the basis of fundamental electrochemical data, morphology evaluation and modeling of the cycling response.

Natural Deep Eutectic Solvents in the Synthesis of Inorganic Nanoparticles

Natural deep eutectic solvents (NDESs), as a new type of green solvent, are used in many fields, including industry in extraction processes, medicine, pharmaceuticals, metallurgy, electrodeposition, separations, gas capture, biocatalysis and nanotechnology. Mainly due to their properties, such as simple preparation, environmental friendliness, biocompatibility and multifunctionality, they are being used in various fields of industry. This review aims to provide insight into the applications of natural deep eutectic solvents, specifically in nanotechnology processes. It focuses on the description of NDES and how their physicochemical properties are used to obtain functional nanomaterials, including metals, metal oxides and salts. It highlights how the use of NDESs to obtain a wide range of inorganic nanoparticles enables the elimination of disadvantages of traditional methods of obtaining them, including reducing energy consumption and functionalising nanoparticles in situ. In conclusion, recent advances and future directions in the development and applications of NDESs in nanotechnology are discussed with the aim of identifying unexplained scientific questions that can be investigated in the future.

Tetrahalidometallate(II) Ionic Liquids with More than One Metal: The Effect of Bromide versus Chloride

Fifteen N-butylpyridinium salts - five monometallic [C₄ Py]₂ [MBr₄ ] and ten bimetallic [C₄ Py]₂ [M_0.5 ^a M_0.5 ^b Br₄ ] (M=Co, Cu, Mn, Ni, Zn) - were synthesized, and their structures and thermal and electrochemical properties were studied. All the compounds are ionic liquids (ILs) with melting points between 64 and 101 °C. Powder and single-crystal X-ray diffraction show that all ILs are isostructural. The electrochemical stability windows of the ILs are between 2 and 3 V. The conductivities at room temperature are between 10^-5 and 10^-6  S cm^-1 . At elevated temperatures, the conductivities reach up to 10^-4  S cm^-1 at 70 °C. The structures and properties of the current bromide-based ILs were also compared with those of previous examples using chloride ligands, which illustrated differences and similarities between the two groups of ILs.

Deep eutectic solvent for spent lithium-ion battery recycling: comparison with inorganic acid leaching

Deep eutectic solvents (DESs) as novel green solvents are potential options to replace inorganic acids for hydrometallurgy. Compared with inorganic acids, the physicochemical properties of DESs and their applications in recycling of spent lithium-ion batteries were summarized. The viscosity, metal solubility, toxicological properties and biodegradation of DESs depend on the hydrogen bond donor (HBD) and acceptor (HBA). The viscosity of ChCl-based DESs increased according to the HBD in the following order: alcohols < carboxylic acids < sugars < inorganic salts. The strongly coordinating HBDs increased the solubility of metal oxide via surface complexation reactions followed by ligand exchange for chloride in the bulk solvent. Interestingly, the safety and degradability of DESs reported in the literature are superior to those of inorganic acids. Both DESs and inorganic acids have excellent metal leaching efficiencies (>99%). However, the reaction kinetics of DESs are 2-3 orders of magnitude slower than those of inorganic acids. A significant advantage of DESs is that they can be regenerated and recycled multiple times after recovering metals by electrochemical deposition or precipitation. In the future, the development of efficient and selective DESs still requires a lot of attention.

Perspectives of Using DES-Based Systems for Solid–Liquid and Liquid–Liquid Extraction of Metals from E-Waste

In recent years, the linear economic model and global warming have shown that it is necessary to move toward a circular economic model. In this scenario, the recycling of waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) with green processes is one of the pending tasks; thus, in the present review, advances in the solid–liquid and liquid–liquid extraction processes, processes among the most important for the recovery of metals from ores or WEEE, with green solvents such as deep eutectic solvents (DES) are presented and analyzed, identifying the present and future challenges. To date, most articles focused on one of the processes, be it solid–liquid or liquid–liquid extraction, while few reports included the entire hydrometallurgical process, which could be due to heterogeneity of the WEEE, a characteristic that influences determining the leaching kinetic and the leaching mechanisms. A deeper understanding of the phenomenon would help improve this process and the next stage of liquid–liquid extraction. This also leads to the fact that, at the liquid–liquid extraction stage, most articles considered synthetic pregnant leach solutions to evaluate each of the variables, whereas the stripping of the ions and the recycling of the DESs in continuous processes is a challenge that should be addressed in future work. From the analysis, for WEEE leaching, it was identified that acid DESs are those achieving the best extraction percentages in the leaching of copper, lithium, and cobalt, among others, where the most studied hydrogen bond acceptor (HBA) is choline chloride with an acid (e.g., citric or lactic acid) as the hydrogen bond donor (HBD). For the liquid–liquid extraction of ions is a greater variety of HBAs (e.g., lidocaine, trioctylphosphine oxide and triphenyl phosphate) and HBDs (e.g., decanoic acid, thenoyltrifluoroacetone, and benzoyltrifluoroacetone) used; however, studies on the extraction of cobalt, lithium, copper, and nickel stand out, where the pH and temperature parameters have great influence.

Ultrasound-assisted deep eutectic solvent-based liquid-liquid microextraction for simultaneous determination of Ni (II) and Zn (II) in food samples

A new approach was developed for the simultaneous pre-concentration and determination of Ni (II) and Zn (II) in food samples. This method is based on ultrasound-assisted liquid-liquid micro extraction using hydrophobic deep eutectic solvent (DES) and 1,10-phenanthroline as chelating agent. The effect of several parameters, such as pH, selection and volume of DES, amount of chelating agent, time of sonication and centrifugation, was studied. Under optimized conditions, the developed procedure offered exceptional sensitivity and linearity. The limit of detection was approximately 0.029 µg/Kg and 1.5 µg/Kg for Ni (II) and Zn (II), respectively. The proposed method was applied for the pre-concentration and determination of Ni (II) and Zn (II) in hydrogenated edible oils, fishes, and milk samples. The results of this study were compared with reported methods in the literature revealing its advantages.

A Kinetically Superior Rechargeable Zinc-Air Battery Derived from Efficient Electroseparation of Zinc, Lead, and Copper in Concentrated Solutions

Zinc electrodeposition is currently a hot topic because of its widespread use in rechargeable zinc-air batteries. However, Zn deposition has received little attention in organic solvents with much higher ionic conductivity and current efficiency. In this study, a Zn-betaine complex is synthesized by using ZnO and betainium bis[(trifluoromethyl)sulfonyl]imide and its electrochemical behavior for six organic solvents and electrodeposited morphology are studied. Acetonitrile allowed dendrite-free Zn electrodeposition at room temperature with current efficiencies of up to 86 %. From acetonitrile solutions in which Zn, Pb, and Cu complexes are dissolved in high concentrations, Zn and Pb/Cu are efficiently separated electrolytically under potentiostatic control, allowing the purification of solutions prepared directly from natural ores. Additionally, a highly flexible Zn anode with excellent kinetics is obtained by using a carbon fabric substrate. A rechargeable zinc-air battery with these electrodes shows an open-circuit voltage of 1.63 V, is stable for at least 75 cycles at 0.5 mA cm^-2 or 33 cycles at 20 mA cm^-2 , and allows intermediate cycling at 100 mA cm^-2 .

Kinetics and mechanistic details of bulk ZnO dissolution using a thiol-imidazole system

Oxide dissolution is important for metal extraction from ores and has become an attractive route for the preparation of inks for thin film solution deposition; however, oxide dissolution is often kinetically challenging. While binary "alkahest" systems comprised of thiols and N-donor species, such as amines, are known to dissolve a wide range of oxides, the mechanism of dissolution and identity of the resulting solute(s) remain unstudied. Here, we demonstrate facile dissolution of both bulk synthetic and natural mineral ZnO samples using an "alkahest" that operates via reaction with thiophenol and 1-methylimidazole (MeIm) to give a single, pseudotetrahedral Zn(SPh)2(MeIm)2 molecular solute identified by X-ray crystallography. The kinetics of ZnO dissolution were measured using solution 1H NMR, and the reaction was found to be zero-order in the presence of excess ligands, with more electron withdrawing para-substituted thiophenols resulting in faster dissolution. A negative entropy of activation was measured by Eyring analysis, indicating associative ligand binding in, or prior to, the rate determining step. Combined experimental and computational surface binding studies on ZnO reveal stronger, irreversible thiophenol binding compared to MeIm, leading to a proposed dissolution mechanism initiated by thiol binding to the ZnO surface with the liberation of water, followed by alternating MeIm and thiolate ligand additions, and ultimately cleavage of the ligated zinc complex from the ZnO surface. Design rules garnered from the mechanistic insight provided by this study should inform the dissolution of other bulk oxides into inks for solution processed thin films.

Exploration of metal sulfide syntheses and the dissolution process of antimony sulfide in phosphonium-based ionic liquids

Ionic liquids (ILs), especially task-specific ILs, are capable of dissolving various solids at moderate temperatures without the need for special reaction vessels. Direct synthesis of binary sulfides of B, Bi, Ge, Mo, Cu, Au, Sn, In, Ti, V, Fe, Co, Ga, Ni, Al, Zn, and Sb in [P₆₆₆₁₄]Cl was tested at 100 °C, i.e. below the melting point of sulfur. Under these conditions, substantial sulfide formation occurred only for nickel (Ni₃S₄, Ni₃S₂, NiS) and copper (Cu₂S, CuS). Sb showed no formation of crystalline sulfide, but after addition of EtOH, an orange material precipitated which was identified as amorphous metastibnite. Subsequently, the dissolution of antimony sulfide (Sb₂S₃), the main source of antimony production, in the phosphonium-based ILs [P₆₆₆₁₄][OAc] and [P₆₆₆₁₄]Cl at 100 °C was studied in detail. The dissolution proceeds without H₂S evolution, and amorphous Sb₂S₃ can be precipitated from these solutions. Heating Sb₂S₃ in the Lewis-acidic IL [BMIm]Cl·4.7AlCl₃ led to the crystallization of [Sb₁₃S₁₆Cl₂][AlCl₄]₅, which contains a new quadruple heterocubane cation.

Ionothermal Synthesis of Sulfidobismuth spiro-Dicubane Cations

Bi2 S3 was dissolved in the presence of NaCl in the ionic liquid [BMIm]Cl ⋅ 4AlCl3 (BMIm=1-n-butyl-3-methylimidazolium) through annealing the mixture at 180 °C. Upon cooling to room temperature, orange, air-sensitive crystals of Na(Bi7 S8 )[S(AlCl3 )3 ]2 [AlCl4 ]2 (1) precipitated. X-ray diffraction on single-crystals of 1 revealed a triclinic crystal structure that contains (Bi7 S8 )5+ spiro-dicubanes, [S(AlCl3 )3 ]2- tetrahedra triples, isolated [AlCl4 ]- tetrahedra, and sodium cations.

Modelling of the Erosive Dissolution of Metal Oxides in a Deep Eutectic Solvent—Choline Chloride/Sulfosalicylic Acid—Assisted by Ultrasonic Cavitation

Here we report on the results concerning the influence of ultrasound on the dissolution process of metal oxides CoO, Ni2O3 and Mn2O3 in choline chloride/sulfosalicylic acid as a deep eutectic solvent. The mechanism of dissolution under cavitation conditions with ultrasonic assistance is described. Theoretical research resulted in equations describing the dissolution process kinetics and linking its basic parameters. Optimal conditions for the most effective ultrasound application were found. Experimental data on dissolution kinetics of metal oxides in deep eutectic solvents was also obtained. It was discovered that experimental data correlates well with theoretical calculations, which confirms the correctness of developing a picture about the physicochemical nature of the process under study.

Inorganic Synthesis Based on Reactions of Ionic Liquids and Deep Eutectic Solvents

Ionic liquids and deep eutectic solvents are of growing interest as solvents for the resource‐efficient synthesis of inorganic materials. This Review covers chemical reactions of various deep eutectic solvents and types of ionic liquids, including metal‐containing ionic liquids, [BF₄]⁻‐ or [PF₆]⁻‐based ionic liquids, basic ionic liquids, and chalcogen‐containing ionic liquids. Cases in which cations, anions, or both are incorporated into the final products are also included. The purpose of this Review is to raise caution about the chemical reactivity of ionic liquids and deep eutectic solvents and to establish a guide for their proper use.

Ionometallurgical Step-Electrodeposition of Zinc and Lead and its Application in a Cycling-Stable High-Voltage Zinc-Graphite Battery

Ionometallurgy is a new development aiming at the sustainable low-temperature conversion of naturally occurring metal ores and minerals to their metals or valuable chemicals in ionic liquids (ILs) or deep eutectic solvents. The IL betainium bis((trifluoromethyl)sulfonyl)imide, [Hbet][NTf₂ ], is especially suited for this process due to its redox-stability and specific-functionalization. The potentiostatic electrodeposition of zinc and lead starting directly from ZnO and PbO, which dissolve in [Hbet][NTf₂ ] in high concentrations is reported. The initial reduction potentials of zinc(II) and lead(II) are about -1.5 and -1.0 V, respectively. The ionic conductivity of the solution of ZnO in [Hbet][NTf₂ ] is measured and the effect of various temperatures and potentials on the morphology of the deposited material is explored. The IL proves to be stable under the chosen conditions. From IL-solutions, where ZnO, PbO, and MgO have been dissolved, metallic Zn and Pb are deposited under potentiostatic control either consecutively by step-electrodeposition or together in a co-electrodeposition. Using the method, Zn is also deposited on 3D copper foam and assembles into high-voltage zinc-graphite battery. It exhibits a working-voltage up to 2.7 V, an output midpoint discharge-voltage of up to 2.16 V, up to 98.6% capacity-retention after 150 cycles, and good rate performance.

In Situ Preconcentration during the Di-(2-ethylhexyl) Phosphoric Acid-Assisted Dissolution of Uranium Trioxide in an Ionic Liquid: Spectroscopic, Electrochemical, and Theoretical Studies

Dissolution of uranium oxide was carried out using a solution of HD2EHP in C₈mim·NTf₂, which was apparently facilitated by the in situ generation of water during the complex formation reaction. The dissolved complex in the ionic liquid phase led to splitting of the latter into a light phase and a heavy phase where the former contained predominantly the UO₂(HL₂)₂ complex (HL = HD2EHP), while the latter contained the ionic liquid as supported by FTIR and UV-Visible spectral analyses. The complexation of the uranyl ion was suggested to take place in the equatorial plane where two dimeric units of the H-bonded HD2EHP molecules took part in complexation. An increase in temperature facilitated the dissolution rate with an activation energy of 31.0 ± 2.8 kJ/mol. The cyclic voltammetry studies indicated potential chances of recovery of the dissolved uranium by electrodeposition at the cathode. The proposed dimeric structure of HD2EHP in the complexation with U(VI) was supported by DFT studies also.

Sustainable recycling of LiCoO2 cathode scrap on the basis of successive peroxymonosulfate activation and recovery of valuable metals

Increasing demand and waste of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) has adversely affected resources and the environment. Multistage utilization of spent LIBs is essential to their sustainable development. Here, we propose a simple recycling method of LiCoO₂ cathode scrap, based on the first use of the cathode scrap as a catalyst to degrade organic pollutants via peroxymonosulfate activation, and subsequent recovery of valuable metals from the used catalyst. Compared with pristine LiCoO₂, the LiCoO₂ cathode scrap exhibits excellent catalytic performance due to the active sites generated, such as the vacancy generation and electronic structure modulation by the degradation of LiCoO₂ during the continuous lithiation and delithiation processes. The removal efficiency of cathode scrap to the o-phenylphenol exceeds 98% within 60 min, and the degradation efficiency is still above 95% after the 10th use because its unique sandwich and porous structure ensure the stability and recyclability. After multiple catalytic reactions, due to the generation of crack, the separation of the sandwich structure, and further degradation of active materials, the leaching efficiency of transition metals from the cathode scrap in deep eutectic solvent is promoted. 86% of lithium and 95% of cobalt are leached from the used catalyst respectively. This study provides a promising strategy for the sustainable development of LIBs and promotes the utilization of spent LIBs in multiaspect.

Metal-Based Ionic Liquids in Oxidative Desulfurization: A Critical Review

Ionic liquids (ILs) as novel functional desulfurization materials have attracted increasing attentions. Metal-based ionic liquids (MILs) are classified into three types of metal chloride ILs, metal oxide ILs, and metal complex ILs based on the definition and basic structure of MILs in this critical review. On the basis of the properties of ILs such as structure designability, super dissolution performance, good thermal and chemical stability, nonflammability, and wide electrochemical window, MILs exhibit unique advantages on hydrophobicity, oxidation performance, and Brönsted-Lewis acidity. Therefore, MILs possess both the absorption and oxidation centers for the intramolecular adsorption and oxidation to improve the oxidative desulfurization (ODS) process. During the novel nonaqueous wet oxidative desulfurization process (Nasil), H₂S can be oxidized into elemental sulfur with hydrophobic MILs, which can be regenerated by oxygen for recycle, to solve the problems of low sulfur capacity, low sulfur quality, and severe secondary pollution in the aqueous Lo-Cat wet oxidative desulfurization process. Another outstanding feature of MILs in ODS is biomimetic catalysis, which has the function of activating molecular oxygen and improving the oxidation performance. Metal oxide ILs and metal complex ILs are used in combination with hydrogen peroxide or oxygen with the existing water to generate a Fenton-like reaction to convert hydrophobic organic sulfur or SO₂ into hydrophilic sulfoxide/sulfone or sulfur acid, respectively. However, the corrosion of Cl^- to the equipment and emulsification phenomenon in the extraction process of sulfoxide/sulfone separation still need further study. Furthermore, the promising strategies to construct highly efficient and green desulfurization processes for large-scale applications are provided.

Bimetallic Pd/Sn-based Nanoparticles and their Catalytic Properties in the Semihydrogenation of Diphenylacetylene

Multimetallic nanoparticles often enhance the catalytic performance of their monometallic counterparts by increasing reaction rates, catalyst selectivity, and/or stability. A prerequisite for understanding structure- and composition-associated properties, however, is the careful design of multimetallic nanoparticles with various structures and compositions. Here, bimetallic Pd/Sn-based nanoparticles are prepared with a tunable composition and structure exploiting ionic liquids (ILs) as reaction medium (i. e., methyltrioctylammonium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide). The nanoparticles are obtained in a one-pot synthetic procedure by reducing the metal salt precursors with triethylborohydride in the IL. The results show that the reaction parameters, in particular the nature and ratio of the Pd2+ /Sn2+ precursors as well as the reaction temperature, influence NP formation and composition. X-ray diffraction with Rietveld analysis and transmission electron microscopy are employed to determine NP size and phase composition. Under optimized reaction conditions Pd2 Sn or PdSn nanocrystals are formed as single-phase products after introducing an additional annealing step at 200 °C. Nanocrystals with intermetallic composition reveal enhanced catalytic properties in the semihydrogenation of diphenylacetylene which was used as a model reaction.

Speciation of Copper(II)-Betaine Complexes as Starting Point for Electrochemical Copper Deposition from Ionic Liquids

The application of ionic liquids for the dissolution of metal oxides is a promising field for the development of more energy- and resource-efficient metallurgical processes. Using such solutions for the production of valuable chemicals or electrochemical metal deposition requires a detailed understanding of the chemical system and the factors influencing it. In the present work, several compounds are reported that crystallize after the dissolution of copper(II) oxide in the ionic liquid [Hbet][NTf2 ]. Dependent on the initial amount of chloride, the reaction temperature and the purity of the reagent, copper crystallizes in complexes with varying coordination geometries and ligands. Subsequently, the influence of these different complex species on electrochemical properties is shown. For the first time, copper is deposited from the ionic liquid [Hbet][NTf2 ], giving promising opportunities for more resource-efficient copper plating. The copper coatings were analyzed by SEM and EDX measurements. Furthermore, a mechanism for the decomposition of [Hbet][NTf2 ] in the presence of chloride is suggested and supported by experimental evidence.

Ionic Liquid-Driven Formation of and Cation Exchange in Layered Sulfido Stannates - a CH2 Group Makes the Difference

Two types of layered sulfido stannates or a molecular cluster compound are obtained upon ionothermal treatment of the simple sulfido stannate salt K4 [SnS4 ]  ·  4H2 O that is based on binary tetrahedral [SnS4 ]4- anions. The formation of the respective products, novel compounds (C4 C1 C1 Im)2 [Sn3 S7 ] (1 a), (C4 C1 C2 Im)2 [Sn3 S7 ] (1 b), and (C4 C1 C2 Im)2 [Sn4 S9 ] (2) with layered anionic substructures, or the recently reported compound (C4 C1 C1 Im)4+x [Sn10 O4 S16 (SMe)4 ][An]x (A) comprising a molecular cluster anion, is controlled by both the choice of the ionic liquid cation and the reaction temperature. We report the scale-up of the syntheses by a factor of 100 with regard to other reported ionothermal syntheses of related compounds, and a procedure of how to isolate them in phase-pure form - both being rare observations in chalcogenido stannate chemistry in ionic liquids. Moreover, the synthesis of compound 1 a can be achieved by rapid cation exchange starting out from 1 b, which has not been reported for organic cations in any chalcogenido stannate salt to date.

Physicochemical Characterization of Candlenut (Aleurites moluccana)-derived Biodiesel Purified with Deed Eutectic Solvents

A high-oil candlenut (Aleurites moluccana)-derived biodiesel was purified using new generation solvents called Deep eutectic solvents (DESs) and physicochemical properties of the purified biodiesel were assessed according to the accepted international standards for biodiesel (ASTM D6751; EN 14214). Binary and ternary choline chloride-based DESs containing glycerol and ethylene glycol as hydrogen bond donors were synthesized. The results of the investigation showed that the quality of DESs-purified biodiesel generally improved compared with the unpurified biodiesel and fulfilled the accepted standard limits for biodiesel except carbon residue and oxidation stability properties. Choline chloride/ethylene glycol (ChCl/Eg, 1:2 molar ratio) having a DES/biodiesel ratio of 1:1 (DES2-11) has enhanced the Fatty Acid Methyl Ester (FAME) content of unpurified biodiesel from 81.89% to 98.13%, and the oxidation stability from 2.36 h to 3.06 h. ¹H NMR examination showed the successful synthesis of DESs; GC-MS analysis of candlenut oil and its biodiesel revealed oil and fatty acid methyl ester compositions, respectively. The similarity in FAME compositions between DESs-purified and unpurified biodiesel as revealed through GC-MS examination suggests the selective removal of impurities and the efficiency of DESs in improving the quality of candlenut-derived biodiesel.

Deep eutectic solvents for the preparation and post-synthetic modification of metal- and covalent organic frameworks

The use of deep eutectic solvents (DES) as media for the preparation of metal- and covalent organic frameworks (MOFs and COFs) and their post-synthetic modification towards composites is reviewed.

Ionic Liquids with More than One Metal: Optical and Electrochemical Properties versus d-Block Metal Combinations

Thirteen N-butylpyridinium salts, including three monometallic [C4 Py]2 [MCl4 ], nine bimetallic [C4 Py]2 [M1-x a Mx b Cl4 ] and one trimetallic compound [C4 Py]2 [M1-y-z a My b Mz c Cl4 ] (M=Co, Cu, Mn; x=0.25, 0.50 or 0.75 and y=z=0.33), were synthesized and their structure and thermal and electrochemical properties were studied. All compounds are ionic liquids (ILs) with melting points between 69 and 93 °C. X-ray diffraction proves that all ILs are isostructural. The conductivity at room temperature is between 10-4 and 10-8  S cm-1 . Some Cu-based ILs reach conductivities of 10-2  S cm-1 , which is, however, probably due to IL dec. This correlates with the optical bandgap measurements indicating the formation of large bandgap semiconductors. At elevated temperatures approaching the melting points, the conductivities reach up to 1.47×10-1  S cm-1 at 70 °C. The electrochemical stability windows of the ILs are between 2.5 and 3.0 V.

Study on Physicochemical and Thermal Properties of Tetrabutylammonium-Based Cation Ionic Salts Induced by Al2O3 Additive for Thermal Energy Storage Application

The physicochemical and thermal properties of tetrabutylammonium bromide (TBA-Br) and tetrabutylammonium hexafluorophosphate (TBA-PF6), and their change with the addition of Al2O3, were investigated using infrared (IR) spectroscopy and by simultaneously conducting thermal thermogravimetric (TG) analysis and differential thermal analysis (DTA) to obtain the differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) thermogram. The change in the IR data is characterized by the growth of a large peak in the range of 3500 cm−1 and the reduction of peaks below 1000 cm−1 with the additive concentration. The decomposition temperature determined from the peak in the DTG curve is nearly constant for TBA-Br, and it decreases with the addition of Al2O3 for TBA-PF6, although it does not depend on the concentration of the additives. The DTA curve of ionic salts with the addition of Al2O3 shows additional peaks, which indicates a change in the sample’s temperature at disorder or phase transitions. The variation in the melting temperature with additive concentration is similar to that of decomposition temperature. The maximum heat of fusion value was approximately 67 kJ kg−1 for the doped TBA-Br and TBA-PF6 but was achieved at a different additive concentration. This is due to the additional disorder in the system induced by the dissolution of Al2O3.

One-pot resource-efficient synthesis of SnSb powders for composite anodes in sodium-ion batteries

SnSb alloy, which can be used as an anode in a sodium-ion cell, was synthesized following a resource-efficient route at low temperature. This one-pot approach greatly reduces the energy consumption and maximizes the efficient use of raw materials. The reaction of elemental tin and antimony in the ionic liquid (IL) trihexyltetradecylphosphonium chloride ([P66614]Cl) at 200 °C led to a microcrystalline powder of single-phase SnSb within 10 h with very high yield (95%). Liquid-state nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy revealed that the IL remains essentially stable during the reaction. It was recovered almost quantitatively by distilling off the organic solvent used for product separation. Composites of SnSb powder and carbon nanotubes (CNTs) were fabricated by a simple ball milling process. Electrochemical measurements demonstrate that the Na‖SnSb/CNTs cell retains close to 100% of its initial capacity after 50 cycles at a current of 50 mA g-1, which is much better than the Na‖SnSb cell. The greatly increased capacity retainability can be attributed to the conductive network formed by CNTs inside the SnSb/CNTs electrode, providing 3D effective and fast electronic pathways during sodium intercalation and de-intercalation.
