Efficiency of Differently Processed Membranes Based on Cellulose as Cationic Dye Adsorbents

Innovative biopolyelectrolytes-based technologies for wastewater treatment

Developing eco-friendly, cost-effective, and efficient methods for treating water pollutants has become paramount in recent years. Biopolyelectrolytes (BPEs), comprising natural polymers like chitosan, alginate, and cellulose, have emerged as versatile tools in this pursuit. This review offers a comprehensive exploration of the diverse roles of BPEs in combating water contamination, spanning coagulation-flocculation, adsorption, and filtration membrane techniques. With ionizable functional groups, BPEs exhibit promise in removing heavy metals, dyes, and various pollutants. Studies showcase the efficacy of chitosan, alginate, and pectin in achieving notable removal rates. BPEs efficiently adsorb heavy metal ions, dyes, and pesticides, leveraging robust adsorption capacity and exceptional mechanical properties. Furthermore, BPEs play a pivotal role in filtration membrane techniques, offering efficient separation systems with high removal rates and low energy consumption. Despite challenges related to production costs and property variability, their environmentally friendly, biodegradable, renewable, and recyclable nature positions BPEs as compelling candidates for sustainable water treatment technologies. This review delves deeper into BPEs' modification and integration with other materials; these natural polymers hold substantial promise in revolutionizing the landscape of water treatment technologies, offering eco-conscious solutions to address the pressing global issue of water pollution.

Utilizing Novel Lignocellulosic Material from Hart's-Tongue Fern (Asplenium scolopendrium) Leaves for Crystal Violet Adsorption: Characterization, Application, and Optimization

In this work, a new lignocellulosic adsorbent was obtained and tested for crystal violet dye removal from water. The material was obtained from hart's-tongue fern (Asplenium scolopendrium) leaves after minimal processing, without chemical or thermal treatment. The surface of the material was characterized using a variety of techniques, including FTIR, SEM, and color analysis. The effect of various factors on the adsorption capacity was then investigated and discussed. The kinetic and equilibrium studies showed that the general-order kinetic model and the Sips isotherm are the most suitable to describe the adsorption process. The equilibrium time was reached after 20 min and the maximum calculated value of the adsorption capacity was 224.2 (mg g-1). The determined values for the thermodynamic parameters indicated physical adsorption as the main mechanism involved in the process. The Taguchi method was used to optimize the adsorption conditions and identify the most influential controllable factor, which was pH. ANOVA (general linear model) was used to calculate the percentage contribution of each controllable factor to dye removal efficiency. Analysis of all the results shows that hart's-tongue fern (Asplenium scolopendrium) leaves are a very inexpensive, readily available, and effective adsorbent for removing crystal violet dye from aqueous solutions.

Nanofibrous/biopolymeric membrane a sustainable approach to remove organic micropollutants: A review

Aquifers are severely polluted with organic and inorganic pollutants, posing a serious threat to the global ecological system's balance. While various traditional methods are available, the development of innovative methods for effluent treatment and reuse is critical. Polymers have recently been widely used in a variety of industry sectors due to their unique properties. Biopolymers are a biodegradable material that is also a viable alternative to synthetic polymers. Biopolymers are preferably obtained from cellulose and carrageenan molecules from various biological sources. While compared with conventional non-biodegradable polymeric materials, the biopolymer possesses unique characteristics such as renewability, cost-effectiveness, biodegradability, and biocompatibility. The improvements towards the biopolymeric (natural) membranes have also been thoroughly discussed. The use of nanofillers to stabilise and improve the effectiveness of biopolymeric membranes in the elimination of organic pollutants is one of the most recent developments. This was discovered that the majority of biopolymeric membranes technology consolidated on organic pollutants. More research should be directed toward against emerging organic/persistent organic pollutants (POP) and micropollutants. Furthermore, processes for regenerating and reusing utilized biopolymer-based carbon - based materials are emphasized.

Gellan gum/bacterial cellulose hydrogel crosslinked with citric acid as an eco-friendly green adsorbent for safranin and crystal violet dye removal

In this study, ex-situ crosslinked gellan gum (GG)/bacterial cellulose (BC) hydrogels have been investigated as good absorbents for the removal of safranin and crystal violet dye pollutants. The preparation involves a cost-effective and easy-to-perform crosslinking procedure, using citric acid (CA) as a green crosslinker. The physicochemical and mechanical properties of the crosslinked hydrogels were examined by FTIR, TGA, SEM, XRD, and unconfined compression analyses. The swelling capacity of the hydrogels as a function of pH was investigated. CA depicted to improve structural stability as a crosslinker. The dye removal capacity of the hydrogels as good adsorbents was explored and showed higher efficiency in the removal of safranin dye as compared to crystal violet with optimum adsorption capacities obtained as 17.57 and 13.49 mg/g, respectively. Adsorption kinetics and isotherm models as well as thermodynamics examined. Results showed the adsorption process well fitted the pseudo 2nd-order kinetic and Langmuir-Freundlich models while temperature dependence study depicted to be exothermic. Furthermore, no significant loss of removal efficiency of the hydrogel adsorbent was observed even after five adsorption-desorption cycles. Based on the revealed results, the prepared hydrogel may serve as an effective adsorbent for the removal of dyes from the aqueous phase.

A comprehensive review on recent advances in preparation, physicochemical characterization, and bioengineering applications of biopolymers

Biopolymers are mainly the polymers which are created or obtained from living creatures such as plants and bacteria rather than petroleum, which has traditionally been the source of polymers. Biopolymers are chain-like molecules composed of repeated chemical blocks derived from renewable resources that may decay in the environment. The usage of biomaterials is becoming more popular as a means of reducing the use of non-renewable resources and reducing environmental pollution produced by synthetic materials. Biopolymers' biodegradability and non-toxic nature help to maintain our environment clean and safe. This study discusses how to improve the mechanical and physical characteristics of biopolymers, particularly in the realm of bioengineering. The paper begins with a fundamental introduction and progresses to a detailed examination of synthesis and a unique investigation of several recent focused biopolymers with mechanical, physical, and biological characterization. Biopolymers' unique non-toxicity, biodegradability, biocompatibility, and eco-friendly features are boosting their applications, especially in bioengineering fields, including agriculture, pharmaceuticals, biomedical, ecological, industrial, aqua treatment, and food packaging, among others, at the end of this paper. The purpose of this paper is to provide an overview of the relevance of biopolymers in smart and novel bioengineering applications.

Preparation and Characterization of an Electrospun Whey Protein/Polycaprolactone Nanofiber Membrane for Chromium Removal from Water

Chromium pollution represents a worldwide concern due to its high toxicity and bioaccumulation in organisms and ecosystems. An interesting material to remove metal ions from water is a whey-protein-based material elaborated by electrospinning, which is an emerging method to produce adsorbent membranes with diverse applications. The aim of this study was to prepare an adsorbent membrane of whey protein isolate (WPI) and polycaprolactone (PCL) by electrospinning to remove chromium ions from water. The adsorbent membrane was synthesized by a central composed design denaturing WPI using 2-Mercaptoethanol and mixing it with PCL to produce electrospun nanofibers. The adsorbent membrane was characterized by denaturation, Scanning Electron Microscope, Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy, Contact Angle, Thermogravimetric Analysis, and X-ray Photoelectron Spectrometry. The adsorption properties of this membrane were assessed in the removal of chromium. The removal performance of the membrane was enhanced by an increase in temperature showing an endothermic adsorption process. The adsorption process of chromium ions onto the nanofiber membrane followed the Sips adsorption isotherm, while the adsorption kinetics followed a pseudo-second kinetics where the maximum adsorption capacity was 31.0 mg/g at 30 °C and pH 2. This work provides a novel method to fabricate a hybrid membrane with amyloid-type fibrils of WPI and PCL, which is a promising adsorbent to remove heavy metal ions from water.

Removal of Methylene Blue from Aqueous Solutions Using a New Natural Lignocellulosic Adsorbent-Raspberry (Rubus idaeus) Leaves Powder

In this work, raspberry (Rubus idaeus) leaves were converted to powder and used as a new natural lignocellulosic low-cost adsorbent for methylene blue removal from aqueous solutions. Different techniques (FTIR, SEM, color analysis, and pH_PZC determination) were applied for adsorbent characterization. The effects of pH, ionic strength, contact time, adsorbent dose, initial deconcentration, and temperature on adsorption capacity were investigated. Equilibrium, kinetic, and thermodynamic studies have shown that the adsorption is best described by the Sips isotherm and pseudo-second-order kinetic model and that the process is spontaneous, favorable, and endothermic, involving physisorption as the main mechanism. The maximum adsorption capacity was 244.6 (mg g⁻¹) higher compared to other adsorbents based on plant leaves. The Taguchi method and the ANOVA analysis were used to optimize the adsorption conditions. The contact time was the factor with the highest influence on the process, while the temperature had the lowest influence. A desorption study was also performed to determine the possibility of adsorbent regeneration.

The Use of Bilberry Leaves (Vaccinium myrtillus L.) as an Efficient Adsorbent for Cationic Dye Removal from Aqueous Solutions

In this study, a new lignocellulosic bioadsorbent, bilberry (Vaccinium myrtillus L.) leaves powder, was used to remove the methylene blue dye from aqueous solutions. The characterization of the adsorbent was performed by FTIR, SEM and color analysis. The influence of pH, contact time, adsorbent dose, initial dye concentration, temperature and ionic strength on the adsorption process were followed. Equilibrium, kinetic, and thermodynamic studies were conducted in order to understand the adsorption process mechanism. Process optimization was performed using the Taguchi method. Sips isotherm and general order kinetic model characterize the adsorption process. The maximum adsorption capacity, 200.4 (mg g^-1), was better compared with other similar bioadsorbents. Thermodynamic parameters indicated that the adsorption process is spontaneous, favorable and endothermic and also that physisorption is involved in the process. The factor with the highest influence on the dye removal process was pH, followed by contact time, temperature, adsorbent dose, ionic strength and initial dye concentration. The obtained results revealed that the bioadsorbent material based on bilberry (Vaccinium myrtillus L.) leaves is highly efficient for cationic dyes removal from aqueous solutions.

Recent Advances in Biopolymeric Membranes towards the Removal of Emerging Organic Pollutants from Water

Herein, this paper details a comprehensive review on the biopolymeric membrane applications in micropollutants' removal from wastewater. As such, the implications of utilising non-biodegradable membrane materials are outlined. In comparison, considerations on the concept of utilising nanostructured biodegradable polymeric membranes are also outlined. Such biodegradable polymers under considerations include biopolymers-derived cellulose and carrageenan. The advantages of these biopolymer materials include renewability, biocompatibility, biodegradability, and cost-effectiveness when compared to non-biodegradable polymers. The modifications of the biopolymeric membranes were also deliberated in detail. This included the utilisation of cellulose as matrix support for nanomaterials. Furthermore, attention towards the recent advances on using nanofillers towards the stabilisation and enhancement of biopolymeric membrane performances towards organic contaminants removal. It was noted that most of the biopolymeric membrane applications focused on organic dyes (methyl blue, Congo red, azo dyes), crude oil, hexane, and pharmaceutical chemicals such as tetracycline. However, more studies should be dedicated towards emerging pollutants such as micropollutants. The biopolymeric membrane performances such as rejection capabilities, fouling resistance, and water permeability properties were also outlined.

A Facile Synthesis of Bi2O3/CoFe2O4 Nanocomposite with Improved Synergistic Photocatalytic Potential for Dye Degradation

Semiconductor-based photocatalysis is a probable approach to overcoming many pollution problems and eradicating toxic organic materials from wastewater. This research endeavor aimed to explore the synergistic potential of different semiconductor nanocomposites for photocatalytic degradation of organic pollutants in contaminated water. A facile hydrothermal approach was employed to synthesize bismuth oxide and cobalt ferrite nanoparticles from their precursors—bismuth nitrate pentahydrate, ferric chloride hexahydrate and cobalt chloride hexahydrate—with various concentrations and conditions to optimize the product. Subsequently, nanocomposites of bismuth oxide and cobalt ferrite were prepared by solid-state mixing in varying concentrations followed by calcination. UV/visible diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy and elemental dispersive X-ray spectroscopic techniques have corroborated the successful synthesis of nanocomposites. The energy gaps of bismuth oxide and cobalt ferrite nanocomposites were computed in the range of 1.58–1.62 eV by Tauc plots. These nanocomposite materials were ascertained for photocatalytic potential to degrade methyl orange organic dye in water. A nanocomposite with equiquantic proportions has shown the best photocatalytic degradation activity, which may be attributed to the type-II band configuration and a synergistic effect, because Bi2O3 acts as an electron sink. This synergism has reduced the cogent band gap, hindered electron hole recombination and increased electron hole availabilities for photodegradation reactions, thus ensuing an efficient photodegradation co-work of Bi2O3/CoFe2O4 nanocomposites.

Nanocellulose Based Filtration Membrane in Industrial Waste Water Treatment: A Review

In the field of industrial wastewater treatment, membrane separation technology, as an emerging separation technology, compared with traditional separation technology such as precipitation, adsorption, and ion exchange, has advantages in separation efficiency, low energy consumption, low cost, simple operation, and no secondary pollution. The application has been expanding in recent years, but membrane fouling and other problems have seriously restricted the development of membrane technology. Natural cellulose is one of the most abundant resources in nature. In addition, nanocellulose has characteristics of high strength and specific surface area, surface activity groups, as well as being pollution-free and renewable, giving it a very wide development prospect in many fields, including membrane separation technology. This paper reviews the current status of nanocellulose filtration membrane, combs the widespread types of nanocellulose and its derivatives, and summarizes the current application of cellulose in membrane separation. In addition, for the purpose of nanocellulose filtration membrane in wastewater treatment, nanocellulose membranes are divided into two categories according to the role in filtration membrane: the application of nanocellulose as membrane matrix material and as a modified additive in composite membrane in wastewater treatment. Finally, the advantages and disadvantages of inorganic ceramic filtrations and nanocellulose filtrations are compared, and the application trend of nanocellulose in the filtration membrane direction is summarized and discussed.

Factors Affecting Synthetic Dye Adsorption; Desorption Studies: A Review of Results from the Last Five Years (2017-2021)

The primary, most obvious parameter indicating water quality is the color of the water. Not only can it be aesthetically disturbing, but it can also be an indicator of contamination. Clean, high-quality water is a valuable, essential asset. Of the available technologies for removing dyes, adsorption is the most used method due to its ease of use, cost-effectiveness, and high efficiency. The adsorption process is influenced by several parameters, which are the basis of all laboratories researching the optimum conditions. The main objective of this review is to provide up-to-date information on the most studied influencing factors. The effects of initial dye concentration, pH, adsorbent dosage, particle size and temperature are illustrated through examples from the last five years (2017-2021) of research. Moreover, general trends are drawn based on these findings. The removal time ranged from 5 min to 36 h (E = 100% was achieved within 5-60 min). In addition, nearly 80% efficiency can be achieved with just 0.05 g of adsorbent. It is important to reduce adsorbent particle size (with Φ decrease E = 8-99%). Among the dyes analyzed in this paper, Methylene Blue, Congo Red, Malachite Green, Crystal Violet were the most frequently studied. Our conclusions are based on previously published literature.

Effective Removal of Crystal Violet Dye Using Neoteric Magnetic Nanostructures Based on Functionalized Poly(Benzofuran-co-Arylacetic Acid): Investigation of the Adsorption Behaviour and Reusability

Synthetic dyes represent a significant class of contaminants released in the environment. Crystal violet is a triarylmethane dye used in several fields such as printing inks, the textile or paper industries, as well as in cell histology. Coating magnetic nanoparticles with functionalized polymers has been proved to improve their efficiency, offering unique properties for applications in wastewater treatment. The current paper focuses on preparing and characterising magnetic core-shell nanoparticles coated with poly(benzofuran-co-arylacetic acid) functionalized with folic acid as an organic shell. The new polymer-based magnetic nanostructures were applied for crystal violet extraction from aqueous solutions. The nanostructures were structurally and morphologically investigated by Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). While thermal and magnetic properties of the magnetic nanostructures were determined by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and magnetization measurements (VSM). At the same time, crystal violet concentrations were determined by UV-VIS spectroscopy. The influence of initial dye concentration and contact time on the removal efficiency has been studied to achieve the optimum adsorption conditions. The dye adsorbent neoteric magnetic nanostructure was easily desorbed and reused, the adsorption capacity decreasing from 100% to 97.63% in the first five cycles, reaching a minimum of 88.74% after the 10th recycling step.

Consolidation of cellulose nanofibrils with lignosulphonate bio-waste into excellent flame retardant and UV blocking membranes

The use of biomass to produce value-adding materials is a core objective of the circular economy, which has attracted great research interest in recent decades. In this context, we present here a simple dispersion-casting process for consolidation of cellulose nanofibrils (CNF), lignosulphonate (LS)-rich bio-waste and CaCl₂ in composite membranes. The addition of CaCl₂ to CNF and LS dispersions reduces the ζ potential, due to an electrostatic screening, which promotes the aggregation of CNF, increases its moisture content and promotes LS deposition on CNFs already in the dispersion phase. Addition of both the LS and CaCl₂ to CNF dispersion has an adverse effect on the mechanical properties of the final membranes. The effectiveness of the new composite membranes has been described in terms of their passive (charring) flame retardancy and 100 % UVA/UVB shielding capacity, both identified for membranes with the highest LS content, as well as high electronic resistance.

Improved Dye Removal Ability of Modified Rice Husk with Effluent from Alkaline Scouring Based on the Circular Economy Concept

To improve the ability of the rice husk to purify colored wastewater, effluent from the alkaline scouring of cotton yarn was used immediately after the scouring (without cooling and additionally added chemicals) in order to remove the non-cellulosic silicon-lignin shield from the rice husk’s surface. This rice husk, with 93.8 mg/g adsorption capacity, behaves similarly as the rice husk treated with an optimized alkaline scouring recipe consisting of 20 g/L NaOH, 2 mL/L Cotoblanc HTD-N and 1 mL/L Kemonecer NI at 70 °C for 30 min with an adsorption capacity of 88.9 mg/g of direct Congo red dye. Treating one form of waste (rice husk) with another (effluent from the alkaline scouring of cellulosic plant fibers), in an effort to produce a material able to purify colored effluent, is an elegant environment-friendly concept based on the circular economy strategy. This will result in a closed-loop energy-efficient process of the pre-treatment of cotton (alkaline scouring), modification of rice husk using effluent from the alkaline scouring, dyeing cotton fabrics and cleaning its colored effluents with modified rice husk without adding chemicals and energy for heating.

Bacterial Cellulose as a Versatile Platform for Research and Development of Biomedical Materials

The unique pool of features found in intracellular and extracellular bacterial biopolymers attracts a lot of research, with bacterial cellulose (BC) being one of the most versatile and common. BC is an exopolysaccharide consisting solely of cellulose, and the variation in the production process can vary its shape or even its composition when compounding is applied in situ. Together with ex situ modification pathways, including specialised polymers, particles or exclusively functional groups, BC provides a robust platform that yields complex multifunctional compounds that go far beyond ultra-high purity, intrinsic hydrophilicity, mechanical strength and biocompatibility to introduce bioactive, (pH, thermal, electro) responsive, conductive and ‘smart’ properties. This review summarises the research outcomes in BC-medical applications, focusing mainly on data from the past decade (i.e., 2010–2020), with special emphasis on BC nanocomposites as materials and devices applicable in medicine. The high purity and unique structural/mechanical features, in addition to its capacity to closely adhere to irregular skin surfaces, skin tolerance, and demonstrated efficacy in wound healing, all stand as valuable attributes advantageous in topical drug delivery. Numerous studies prove BC compatibility with various human cells, with modifications even improving cell affinity and viability. Even BC represents a physical barrier that can reduce the penetration of bacteria into the tissue, but in its native form does not exhibit antimicrobial properties, therefore carious modifications have been made or specific compounds added to confer antimicrobial or anti-inflammatory properties. Progress in the use of BC-compounds as wound dressings, vascular grafts, and scaffolds for the treatment of cartilage, bone and osteochondral defects, the role as a basement membrane in blood-brain barrier models and many more are discussed to particular extent, emphasising the need for BC compounding to meet specific requirements.
