Designing SERS nanotags for profiling overexpressed surface markers on single cancer cells: A review

This review focuses on the chemical design and the use of Surface-Enhanced Raman Scattering (SERS)-active nanotags for measuring surface markers that can be overexpressed at the surface of single cancer cells. Indeed, providing analytical tools with true single-cell measurements capabilities is capital, especially since cancer research is increasingly leaning toward single-cell analysis, either to guide treatment decisions or to understand complex tumor behaviour including the single-cell heterogeneity and the appearance of treatment resistance. Over the past two decades, SERS nanotags have triggered significant interest in the scientific community owing their advantages over fluorescent tags, mainly because SERS nanotags resist photobleaching and exhibit sharper signal bands, which reduces possible spectral overlap and enables the discrimination between the SERS signals and the autofluorescence background from the sample itself. The extensive efforts invested in harnessing SERS nanotags for biomedical purposes, particularly in cancer research, highlight their potential as the next generation of optical labels for single-cell studies. The review unfolds in two main parts. The first part focuses on the structure of SERS nanotags, detailing their chemical composition and the role of each building block of the tags. The second part explores applications in measuring overexpressed surface markers on single-cells. The latter encompasses studies using single nanotags, multiplexed measurements, quantitative information extraction, monitoring treatment responses, and integrating phenotype measurements with SERS nanotags on single cells isolated from complex biological matrices. This comprehensive review anticipates SERS nanotags to persist as a pivotal technology in advancing single-cell analytical methods, particularly in the context of cancer research and personalized medicine.

Ultrasensitive Optical Fingerprinting of Biorelevant Molecules by Means of SERS-Mapping on Nanostructured Metasurfaces

The most relevant technique for portable (on-chip) sensors is Surface Enhanced Raman Scattering (SERS). This strategy crashes in the case of large (biorelevant) molecules and nano-objects, whose SERS spectra are irreproducible for "homeopathic" concentrations. We suggested solving this problem by SERS-mapping. We analyzed the distributions of SERS parameters for relatively "small" (malachite green (MG)) and "large" (phthalocyanine, H₂Pc*) molecules. While fluctuations of spectra for "small" MG were negligible, noticeable distribution of spectra was observed for "large" H₂Pc*. We show that the latter is due to a random arrangement of molecules with respect to "hot spot" areas, which have limited sizes, thus amplifying the lines corresponding to vibrations of different molecule parts. We have developed a method for engineering low-cost SERS substrates optimized for the best enhancement efficiency and a measurement protocol to obtain a reliable Raman spectrum, even for a countable number of large molecules randomly distributed over the substrate.

Rapid Fabrication of Fe and Pd Thin Films as SERS-Active Substrates via Dynamic Hydrogen Bubble Template Method

Fe and Pd thin film samples have been fabricated in a rapid fashion utilizing the versatile technique of dynamic hydrogen bubble template (DHBT) method via potentiostatic electrodeposition over a copper substrate. The morphology of the samples is dendritic, with the composition being directly proportional to the deposition time. All the samples have been tested as SERS substrates for the detection of Rhodamine 6G (R6G) dye. The samples perform very well, with the best performance shown by the Pd samples. The lowest detectable R6G concentration was found to be 10^-6 M (479 μgL^-1) by one of the Pd samples with the deposition time of 180 s. The highest enhancement of signals noticed in this sample can be attributed to its morphology, which is more nanostructured compared to other samples, which is extremely conducive to the phenomenon of localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR). Overall, these samples are cheaper, easy to prepare with a rapid fabrication method, and show appreciable SERS performance.

A review of cardiac troponin I detection by surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy: Under the spotlight of point-of-care testing

Cardiac troponin I (cTnI) is a biomarker widely related to acute myocardial infarction (AMI), one of the leading causes of death around the world. Point-of-care testing (POCT) of cTnI not only demands a short turnaround time for its detection but the highest accuracy levels to set expeditious and adequate clinical decisions. The analytical technique Surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) possesses several properties that tailor to the POCT format, such as its flexibility to couple with rapid assay platforms like microfluidics and paper-based immunoassays. Here, we analyze the strategies used for the detection of cTnI by SERS considering POCT requirements. From the detection ranges reported in the reviewed literature, we suggest the diseases other than AMI that could be diagnosed with this technique. For this, a section with information about cardiac and non-cardiac diseases with cTnI release, including their release kinetics or cut-off values are presented. Likewise, POCT features, the use of SERS as a POCT technique, and the biochemistry of cTnI are discussed. The information provided in this review allowed the identification of strengths and lacks of the available SERS-based point-of-care tests for cTnI and the disclosing of requirements for future assays design.

Microcontact printing of gold nanoparticle at three-phase interface as flexible substrate for SERS detection of MicroRNA

The rigidity of traditional solid-state surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) substrate hampers their application in the curved structure for nonplanar surface test and in-situ detection. Traditionally, the flexible Raman substrates are often prepared by transferring printing of patterned nanoparticles on the flexible materials such as polymer, paper, etc. However，the replicate patterns are often produced by high-cost instruments. In this study, a low-cost and flexible SERS substrate is prepared by using a microcontact printing technology to transfer three-phase-assembled nanoparticles on a polydimethylsiloxane film, which can stabilize the assembled nanoparticles. Combining with the endonuclease Nt.BbvCI assisted amplification method, a SERS biosensor is constructed for microRNA 21 (miRNA 21) assay. This platform presents a wide dynamic range (100 fM ∼1 nM), achieving a fabulous sensitivity with limit of detection of 11.96 fM for miRNA 21. Furthermore, after being bent 90° for 50 times, the Raman intensity of the flexible substrate shows a negligible change. This versatile flexible substrate exhibits considerable potential for SERS analysis, which also opens a new avenue for preparing flexible devices.

Recent Advances in Silver Nanostructured Substrates for Plasmonic Sensors

Noble metal nanostructures are known to confine photon energies to their dimensions with resonant oscillations of their conduction electrons, leading to the ultrahigh enhancement of electromagnetic fields in numerous spectroscopic methods. Of all the possible plasmonic nanomaterials, silver offers the most intriguing properties, such as best field enhancements and tunable resonances in visible-to-near infrared regions. This review highlights the recent developments in silver nanostructured substrates for plasmonic sensing with the main emphasis on surface plasmon resonance (SPR) and surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) over the past decade. The main focus is on the synthesis of silver nanostructured substrates via physical vapor deposition and chemical synthesis routes and their applications in each sensing regime. A comprehensive review of recent literature on various possible silver nanostructures prepared through these methodologies is discussed and critically reviewed for various planar and optical fiber-based substrates.

Combination Effect of Novel Bimetallic Ag–Ni Nanoparticles with Fluconazole against Candida albicans

The increasing frequency of antifungal drug resistance among pathogenic yeast “Candida” has posed an immense global threat to the public healthcare sector. The most notable species of Candida causing most fungal infections is Candida albicans. Furthermore, recent research has revealed that transition and noble metal combinations can have synergistic antimicrobial effects. Therefore, a one-pot seedless biogenic synthesis of Ag-Ni bimetallic nanoparticles (Ag–Ni NPs) using Salvia officinalis aqueous leaf extract is described. Various techniques, such as UV–vis, FTIR, XRD, SEM, EDX, and TGA, were used to validate the production of Ag-Ni NPs. The antifungal susceptibility of Ag-Ni NPs alone and in combination with fluconazole (FLZ) was tested against FLZ-resistant C. albicans isolate. Furthermore, the impacts of these NPs on membrane integrity, drug efflux pumps, and biofilms formation were evaluated. The MIC (1.56 μg/mL) and MFC (3.12 μg/mL) results indicated potent antifungal activity of Ag-Ni NPs against FLZ-resistant C. albicans. Upon combination, synergistic interaction was observed between Ag-Ni NPs and FLZ against C. albicans 5112 with a fractional inhibitory concentration index (FICI) value of 0.31. In-depth studies revealed that Ag-Ni NPs at higher concentrations (3.12 μg/mL) have anti-biofilm properties and disrupt membrane integrity, as demonstrated by scanning electron microscopy results. In comparison, morphological transition was halted at lower concentrations (0.78 μg/mL). From the results of efflux pump assay using rhodamine 6G (R6G), it was evident that Ag-Ni NPs blocks the efflux pumps in the FLZ-resistant C. albicans 5112. Targeting biofilms and efflux pumps using novel drugs will be an alternate approach for combatting the threat of multi-drug resistant (MDR) stains of C. albicans. Therefore, this study supports the usage of Ag-Ni NPs to avert infections caused by drug resistant strains of C. albicans.

Colloidal Multiscale Assembly via Photothermally Driven Convective Flow for Sensitive In-Solution Plasmonic Detections

The assembly of metal nanoparticles and targets to be detected in a small light probe volume is essential for achieving sensitive in-solution surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS). Such assemblies generally require either chemical linkers or templates to overcome the random diffusion of the colloids unless the aqueous sample is dried. Here, a facile method is reported to produce 3D multiscale assemblies of various colloids ranging from molecules and nanoparticles to microparticles for sensitive in-solution SERS detection without chemical linkers and templates by exploiting photothermally driven convective flow. The simulations suggest that colloids sub 100 nm in diameter can be assembled by photothermally driven convective flow regardless of density; the assembly of larger colloids up to several micrometers by convective flow is significant only if their density is close to that of water. Consistent with the simulation results, the authors confirm that the photothermally driven convective flow is mainly responsible for the observed coassembly of plasmonic gold nanorods with either smaller molecules or larger microparticles. It is further found that the coassembly with the plasmonic nanoantennae leads to dramatic Raman enhancements of molecules, microplastics, and microbes by up to fivefold of magnitude compared to those measured in solution without the coassembly.

Assembly of long silver nanowires into highly aligned structure to achieve uniform "Hot Spots" for Surface-enhanced Raman scattering detection

Silver nanowires (AgNWs) as a promising surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) substrate could be used in the analytical science due to its high sensitivity. However, it is difficult for the randomly-distributed silver nanowires to offer uniform "hot spots" to achieve the SERS signal reproducibility of small molecules detection. Herein, the evaporation-induced aggregation had been used to assemble long silver nanowires into highly aligned structure to achieve uniform "hot spots" for SERS detection. The normal glass slide with well-aligned silver nanowires could act as a high sensitivity and excellent reproducibility SERS substrate to provide a versatile platform for detecting analytes. Rhodamine 6G (R6G) is used to evaluate the sensitivity and reproducibility of these AgNWs SERS substrates. Even the low concentration of the R6G was 10^-10 mol/L, the SERS features of R6G could be still observed clearly, and the uniform distribution of enhancement factor (EF) was higher than 0.8 × 10⁴ accounting for about 75 % in the observed mapping area. Moreover, the relative standard deviation (RSD) of SERS intensity at the band of 610 cm^-1 was used to estimate the signal reproducibility, and the calculated RSD value of aligned AgNWs substrate was about 3.6%, which was much higher than that of the randomly distributed AgNWs (26.8%) because of the highly aligned structure of silver nanowires with abundant and uniform inherent "hot spots". In addition, potential SERS detection of other small molecule, e.g. melamine was also demonstrated in the micromolar range.

Nanotechnology-Assisted Cell Tracking

The usefulness of nanoparticles (NPs) in the diagnostic and/or therapeutic sector is derived from their aptitude for navigating intra- and extracellular barriers successfully and to be spatiotemporally targeted. In this context, the optimization of NP delivery platforms is technologically related to the exploitation of the mechanisms involved in the NP–cell interaction. This review provides a detailed overview of the available technologies focusing on cell–NP interaction/detection by describing their applications in the fields of cancer and regenerative medicine. Specifically, a literature survey has been performed to analyze the key nanocarrier-impacting elements, such as NP typology and functionalization, the ability to tune cell interaction mechanisms under in vitro and in vivo conditions by framing, and at the same time, the imaging devices supporting NP delivery assessment, and consideration of their specificity and sensitivity. Although the large amount of literature information on the designs and applications of cell membrane-coated NPs has reached the extent at which it could be considered a mature branch of nanomedicine ready to be translated to the clinic, the technology applied to the biomimetic functionalization strategy of the design of NPs for directing cell labelling and intracellular retention appears less advanced. These approaches, if properly scaled up, will present diverse biomedical applications and make a positive impact on human health.

Two-step formulation of magnetic nanoprobes for microRNA capture

MicroRNAs (miRs) belong to a family of short non-coding endogenous RNAs. Their over-expression correlates with various pathologies: for instance, miRNA-155 (miR-155) is over-expressed upon the development of breast cancers. However, the detection of miRs as disease biomarkers suffers from insufficient sensitivity. In the present study, we propose a protocol for a rapid and efficient generation of magnetic nanoprobes able to capture miR-155, with the aim of increasing its concentration. As a nanoprobe precursor, we first synthesized superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (SPIONs) coated with covalently attached polyethylene glycol carrying a free biotin terminus (PEG-bi). Using streptavidin–biotin interactions, the nanoprobes were formulated by functionalizing the surface of the nanoparticles with the miR sequence (CmiR) complementary to the target miR-155 (TmiR). The two-step formulation was optimized and validated using several analytical techniques, in particular with Size-Exclusion High Performance Liquid Chromatography (SE-HPLC). Finally, the proof of the nanoprobe affinity to TmiR was made by demonstrating the TmiR capture on model solutions, with the estimated ratio of 18 : 22 TmiR : CmiR per nanoprobe. The nanoprobes were confirmed to be stable after incubation in serum.

Surface Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy: Applications in Agriculture and Food Safety

Recent global warming has resulted in shifting of weather patterns and led to intensification of natural disasters and upsurges in pests and diseases. As a result, global food systems are under pressure and need adjustments to meet the change—often by pesticides. Unfortunately, such agrochemicals are harmful for humans and the environment, and consequently need to be monitored. Traditional detection methods currently used are time consuming in terms of sample preparation, are high cost, and devices are typically not portable. Recently, Surface Enhanced Raman Scattering (SERS) has emerged as an attractive candidate for rapid, high sensitivity and high selectivity detection of contaminants relevant to the food industry and environmental monitoring. In this review, the principles of SERS as well as recent SERS substrate fabrication methods are first discussed. Following this, their development and applications for agrifood safety is reviewed, with focus on detection of dye molecules, melamine in food products, and the detection of different classes of pesticides such as organophosphate and neonicotinoids.

DNA Structure-Stabilized Liquid-Liquid Self-Assembled Ordered Au Nanoparticle Interface for Sensitive Detection of MiRNA 155

Au nanoparticles (Au NPs) can be self-assembled in a bottom-up orderly manner at the oil-water interface, which is widely used as SERS platforms, but the stability of the Au NP interface needs to be improved due to shaking or shifting and the Brownian motion. The DNA structure with unique sequence specificity, excellent programmability, and flexible end-group modification capability owns good potential to precisely control the plasmonic structure's distance. In this study, a large area of the SERS substrate is obtained from the DNA structure-stabilized self-assembled ordered Au NPs on the cyclohexane-water interface. Combining with the exonuclease III (exo III)-assisted DNA recycling amplification strategy, we construct a liquid-phase SERS biosensor for efficient detection of microRNA 155 (miRNA 155). Compared with the traditional randomly assembled Au NPs on the two-phase interface, the SERS signal is significantly enhanced and more stable. The detection limit of the SERS biosensor for miRNA 155 reached 1.45 fmol/L, which has a very wide linear range (100 fmol/L-5 nmol/L). This work gives an efficient approach to stabilize the self-assembly Au NPs on the liquid-liquid interface, which can broaden the application of SERS analysis.

Three-Dimensional Au/Ag Nanoparticle/Crossed Carbon Nanotube SERS Substrate for the Detection of Mixed Toxic Molecules

Research on engineering "hotspots" in the field of surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) is at the forefront of contributing to the best sensing indicators. Currently, there is still an urgent need to design a high-strength and large-scale electric field distribution method in order to obtain an ideal SERS sensor. Here, we designed a three-dimensional (3D) Au/Ag nanoparticle (NP)/crossed carbon nanotube film SERS substrate. The proposed structure formed by the simple preparation process can perfectly coordinate the interaction between the SERS substrates, lasers, and molecules. The denser "hotspots" can be induced and then distributed in holes enclosed by Au/AgNPs and the gaps between them. This process was verified by numerical simulations. The experimental results show that the proposed SERS substrate possesses an excellent sensitivity of 10^-12 M (rhodamine 6G (R6G)), an enhancement factor of 1.60 × 10⁹, and a good signal reproducibility (the relative standard deviation is ~6.03%). We further use a Au/AgNP/crossed CNT substrate to detect complex solutions composed of toxic molecules, which shows that our proposed SERS substrate has a wide range of application potentials, especially in food safety.

Molybdenum Oxide/Tungsten Oxide Nano-heterojunction with Improved Surface-Enhanced Raman Scattering Performance

By virtue of their high uniformity and stability, metal oxide-based surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) substrates have attracted enormous attention for molecular trace detection. However, strategies for further enhancing the SERS sensitivity are still desired. Herein, MoO_x/WO_x nano-heterojunctions are constructed by mixing MoO_x and WO_x together (MoO_x/WO_x hybrid) with diverse weight ratios. Using a 532 nm laser as the excitation source and R6G as the Raman reporter, it is shown that the Raman signal intensity (for the peak @ 1360 cm^-1) obtained on the optimal MoO_x/WO_x hybrid (MoO_x/WO_x = 1:1/3) is twice that observed on a pure MoO_x or WO_x substrate. Moreover, a limit of detection of 10^-8 M and an enhancement factor of 10⁸ are achieved. In the SERS enhancement mechanism investigation, it is revealed that MoO_x and WO_x form a staggered band structure. During the SERS measurement, electron-hole pairs are generated in the nano-heterojunction using the incident laser. They are then separated by the built-in potential with the electrons moving toward WO_x. The accumulated electrons on WO_x are further transferred to the R6G molecules through the coupling of orbitals. Consequently, the molecular polarizability is amplified, and SERS performance is enhanced. The abovementioned explanation is supported by the evidence that the contribution of the chemical enhancement mechanism in the optimal MoO_x/WO_x hybrid substrate is about 2.5 times or 5.9 times that in the pure WO_x or MoO_x substrate.

Study of the interaction mechanism between hydrophilic thiol capped gold nanoparticles and melamine in aqueous medium

In the last years, intense efforts have been made in order to obtain colloidal-based systems capable of pointing out the presence of melamine in food samples. In this work, we reported about the recognition of melamine in aqueous solution, using gold nanoparticles stabilized with 3-mercapto-1-propanesulfonate (AuNPs-3MPS), with the aim of deepening how the recognition process works. AuNPs were synthesized using a wet chemical reduction method. The synthesized AuNPs-3MPS probe was fully characterized, before and after the recognition process, by both physicochemical (UV-vis, FT-IR, ¹H-NMR, DLS and ζ-potential) and morphostructural techniques (AFM, HR-TEM). The chemical and electronic structure was also investigated by SR-XPS. The sensing method is based on the melamine-induced aggregation of AuNPs; the presence of melamine was successfully detected in the range of 2.5-500 ppm. The results achieved also demonstrate that negatively charged AuNPs-3MPS are potentially useful for determining melamine contents in aqueous solution. SR-XPS measurements allowed to understand interaction mechanism between the probe and the analyte. The presence of sulfonate groups allows a mutual interaction mediated by electrostatic bonds between nanoparticles surface thiols and positively charged amino groups of melamine molecules.

Synthesis and defect engineering of molybdenum oxides and their SERS applications

Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) spectroscopy has been developed into a cross-disciplinary analytical technology through exploring various materials' Raman vibrational modes with ultra-high sensitivity and specificity. Although conventional noble-metal based SERS substrates have achieved great success, oxide-semiconductor-based SERS substrates are attracting researchers' intensive interest due to their merits of facile fabrication, high uniformity and tunable SERS characteristics. Among all the SERS active oxide semiconductors, molybdenum oxides (MoO_x) possess exceptional advantages of high Raman enhancement factor, environmental stability, recyclable detection, etc. More interestingly, the SERS effect of the MoO_x SERS substrates may involve both the electromagnetic enhancement mechanism and the chemical enhancement mechanism, which is determined by the stoichiometry and morphology of the material. Therefore, the focus of this review will be on two critical points: (1) synthesis and material engineering methods of the functional MoO_x material and (2) MoO_x SERS mechanism and performance evaluation. First, we review recent works on the MoO_x preparation and material property tuning approaches. Second, the SERS mechanism and performance of various MoO_x substrates are surveyed. In particular, the performance uniformity, enhancement factor and recyclability are evaluated. In the end, we discuss several challenges and open questions related to further promoting the MoO_x as the SERS substrate for monitoring extremely low trace molecules and the theory for better understanding of the SERS enhancement mechanism.

Synthesis, Electrocatalytic and Gas Transport Characteristics of Pentagonally Structured Star-Shaped Nanocrystallites of Pd-Ag

The method of synthesis of bimetallic Pd-Ag pentagonally structured catalyst "nanostar" on the surface of Pd-23%Ag alloy films has been developed. The resulting catalyst was studied as a highly active functional layer for methanol oxidation reaction (MOR) in alkaline media and the intensification of hydrogen transport through the Pd-23%Ag membrane in the processes of hydrogen diffusion purification. A modifying layer with a controlled size, composition and excellent electrocatalytic activity was synthesized by electrochemical deposition at a reduced current density compared to classical methods. The low deposition rate affects the formation of pentagonally structured nanocrystallites, allowing Pd and Ag particles to form well-defined structures due to the properties of the surfactant used. Electrochemical studies have demonstrated that the catalyst synthesized by the "nanostar" method shows better electrocatalytic activity in relation to MOR and demonstrates a higher peak current (up to 17.82 µA cm^-2) in comparison with one for the catalyst synthesized by the "nanoparticle" method (up to 10.66 µA cm^-2) in a cyclic voltammetric study. The nanostar catalyst electrode releases the highest current density (0.25 µA cm^-2) for MOR and demonstrates higher catalytic activity for the oxidation of possible intermediates such as sodium formate in MOR. In the processes of diffusion membrane purification of hydrogen, a multiple increase in the density of the penetrating flux of hydrogen through the membranes modified by the "nanostar" catalyst (up to 10.6 mmol s^-1 m^-2) was demonstrated in comparison with the membranes modified by the "nanoparticles" method (up to 4.49 mmol s^-1 m^-2). Research data may indicate that the properties of the developed pentagonally structured catalyst "nanostar" and its enhanced activity with respect to reactions involving hydrogen increase the desorption activity of the membrane, which ultimately accelerates the overall stepwise transfer of hydrogen across the membrane.

Influence of SERS Activity of SnSe2 Nanosheets Doped with Sulfur

The application of 2D semiconductor nanomaterials in the field of SERS is limited due to its weak enhancement effect and the unclear enhancement mechanism. In this study, we changed the surface morphology and energy level structure of 2D SnSe₂ nanosheets using different amounts of S dopant. This caused the vibration coupling of the substrate and the adsorbed molecules and affects the SERS activities of the SnSe₂ nanosheets. SERS performance of the 2D semiconductor substrate can effectively be improved by suitable doping, which can effectively break the limitation of 2D semiconductor compounds in SERS detection and will have very important significance in the fields of chemical, biological, and materials sciences. In this work, the intensities of SERS signals for R6G molecules on SnSe_0.93S_0.94 are 1.3 to 1.7 times stronger than those on pure SnSe₂ substrate. It not only provides a new way to effectively improve the SERS activity of a semiconductor SERS substrates but also helps to design more efficient and stable semiconductor SERS substrates for practical application.

Bioelectrocatalysis of Hemoglobin on Electrodeposited Ag Nanoflowers toward H2O2 Detection

Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) is a partially reduced metabolite of oxygen that exerts a diverse array of physiological and pathological activities in living organisms. Therefore, the accurate quantitative determination of H2O2 is crucial in clinical diagnostics, the food industry, and environmental monitoring. Herein we report the electrosynthesis of silver nanoflowers (AgNFs) on indium tin oxide (ITO) electrodes for direct electron transfer of hemoglobin (Hb) toward the selective quantification of H2O2. After well-ordered and fully-grown AgNFs were created on an ITO substrate by electrodeposition, their morphological and optical properties were analyzed with scanning electron microscopy and UV-Vis spectroscopy. Hb was immobilized on 3-mercaptopropionic acid-coated AgNFs through carbodiimide cross-linking to form an Hb/AgNF/ITO biosensor. Electrochemical measurement and analysis demonstrated that Hb retained its direct electron transfer and electrocatalytic properties and acted as a H2O2 sensor with a detection limit of 0.12 µM and a linear detection range of 0.2 to 3.4 mM in phosphate-buffered saline (PBS). The sensitivity, detection limit, and detection range of the Hb/AgNF/ITO biosensor toward detection H2O2 in human serum was also found to be 0.730 mA mM-1 cm-2, 90 µM, and 0.2 to 2.6 mM, indicating the clinical application for the H2O2 detection of the Hb/AgNF/ITO biosensor. Moreover, interference experiments revealed that the Hb/AgNF/ITO sensor displayed excellent selectivity for H2O2.

Highly Sensitive and Tunable Plasmonic Sensor Based on a Nanoring Resonator with Silver Nanorods

We numerically and theoretically investigate a highly sensitive and tunable plasmonic refractive index sensor that is composed of a metal-insulator-metal waveguide with a side-coupled nanoring, containing silver nanorods using the finite element method. Results reveal that the presence of silver nanorods in the nanoring has a significant impact on sensitivity and tunability performance. It gives a flexible way to tune the system response in the proposed structure. Our designed sensor has a sensitivity of 2080 nm/RIU (RIU is the refractive index unit) along with a figure of merit and a quality factor of 29.92 and 29.67, respectively. The adequate refractive index sensitivity can increase by adding the silver nanorods in a nanoring, which can induce new surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) modes that cannot be found by a regular nanoring. For a practical application, a valid introduction of silver nanorods in the nanoring can dramatically reduce the dimension of the proposed structure without sacrificing performance.
