Metal Organic Framework Derived MnO2-Carbon Nanotubes for Efficient Oxygen Reduction Reaction and Arsenic Removal from Contaminated Water

Preparation of MnO2-Carbon Materials and Their Applications in Photocatalytic Water Treatment

Water pollution is one of the most important problems in the field of environmental protection in the whole world, and organic pollution is a critical one for wastewater pollution problems. How to solve the problem effectively has triggered a common concern in the area of environmental protection nowadays. Around this problem, scientists have carried out a lot of research; due to the advantages of high efficiency, a lack of secondary pollution, and low cost, photocatalytic technology has attracted more and more attention. In the past, MnO₂ was seldom used in the field of water pollution treatment due to its easy agglomeration and low catalytic activity at low temperatures. With the development of carbon materials, it was found that the composite of carbon materials and MnO₂ could overcome the above defects, and the composite had good photocatalytic performance, and the research on the photocatalytic performance of MnO₂-carbon materials has gradually become a research hotspot in recent years. This review covers recent progress on MnO₂-carbon materials for photocatalytic water treatment. We focus on the preparation methods of MnO₂ and different kinds of carbon material composites and the application of composite materials in the removal of phenolic compounds, antibiotics, organic dyes, and heavy metal ions in water. Finally, we present our perspective on the challenges and future research directions of MnO₂-carbon materials in the field of environmental applications.

Coordination Polymer Framework-Derived Ni-N-Doped Carbon Nanotubes for Electro-Oxidation of Urea

Electrochemical oxidation of urea (UOR) is critical in the removal of urea from wastewater and energy conservation and storage. Nickel-based catalysts are widely used for urea-ORR, but in all cases, the nickel must be hybridized with carbon materials to improve its conductivity. In this manuscript, we demonstrate the synthesis of a nickel-decorated carbon nanotube (Ni-NCNT) by simple microwave pyrolysis of Dabco (1,4-diazabicyclo[2.2.2]octane)-based coordination polymer frameworks (CPF). The surface structure, morphology and chemical composition of Ni-NCNT were characterized by Raman spectrum, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) analysis. SEM studies showed micrometer-long bamboo-shaped CNTs with nickel nanoparticles anchored to the walls and inside the nanotubes. A structural study by TEM and Raman spectra showed that carbon nanotubes are rich in defects due to the presence of nitrogen, and this was confirmed by energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) maps. When applied as electrocatalysts in urea oxidation reactions (UOR), our newly developed Ni-NCNT shows excellent electrocatalytic activity and stability, making it a versatile catalyst in energy generation and mitigating water contamination.

Degradations of endocrine-disrupting chemicals and pharmaceutical compounds in wastewater with carbon-based nanomaterials: a critical review

Although water occupies 75% of the earth's surface, only 0.0067% of the total water is available for human activities. These statistics further decline with the population growth and consequent multiplication in the amount of annual waste produced. The demand for clean and safe drinking water has always been a prime concern in the global scenario. Among various types of waste materials, endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) and pharmaceutical effluents have become a constant threat to the aquatic ecosystem and possess challenges worldwide. Endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) are a mixed group of emerging concern chemicals with the ability to mimic the mechanisms of biosynthesis, transport, and metabolism of hormones. These chemicals pose various health threats such as early puberty, infertility, obesity, diabetes, reproductive disorders, cancerous tumors, and related disorders (immune cells, hormones' activity, and various organs). On the other hand, pharmaceutical compounds such as antibiotics also harm the natural environment, human health, and soil microbiology. Their low concentration, ranging from a few ng/L to μg/L, gives rise to a micro-pollution phenomenon, which makes it difficult to detect, analyze, and degrade in wastewater treatment plants. Activated carbons (ACs) and other adsorbents, including naturally occurring materials (wood, keratin) are considered as nanomaterials (NMs) reference for the separation of organic pollutants. It is generally acknowledged that mass-transfer phenomena control sorption kinetics at the liquid/solid interface, with retention controlled by the sorbent/sorbate properties. Therefore, the type of interaction (strong or weak van der Waals forces) and the hydrophilic/hydrophobic properties of the adsorbent are two crucial factors. Besides, EDCs and pharmaceutical compound sorption on such kinds of nanoporous solids depend on both the molecule size and charge density. The applications of nanomaterials on non-conservative methods, like advanced oxidation processes or AOPs (e.g., photocatalysis and Fenton reaction), are contemplated as more apt in comparison to conservative technology like reverse osmosis nanofiltration, and adsorption, etc. One of the reasons is that AOPs generate free radicals (hydroxyls), which are strong oxidants for the demineralization of organic compounds and the extreme case that hydroxyl radicals can attack any kinds of pollutants with the generation of only water and carbon dioxide as final products. AOPs may imply the use of NMs as either catalysts or photocatalysts, which improve the selective removal of the target pollutant. Therefore, various literature reviews have revealed that there is a timely need to upgrade the efficiency of the remediation approaches to protect the environment against EDCs and pharmaceuticals adequately. There is currently a lack of definitive risk assessment tools due to their complicated detection and associated insufficiency in the health risk database. Hence, our present review focuses on applying carbon-based nanomaterials to remove EDCs and pharmaceuticals from aqueous systems. The paper covers the effect of these pollutants and photocatalytic methods for treating these compounds in wastewater, along with their limitations and challenges, plausible solutions, and prospects of such techniques.

A Facile Method to Realize Oxygen Reduction at the Hydrogen Evolution Cathode of an Electrolytic Cell for Energy-Efficient Electrooxidation

Electrochemical oxidation, widely used in green production and pollution abatement, is often accompanied by the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), which results in a high consumption of electricity and is a potential explosion hazard. To solve this problem, we report here a method for converting the original HER cathode into one that enables the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) without having to build new electrolysis cells or be concerned about electrolyte leakage from the O₂ gas electrode. The viability of this method is demonstrated using the electrolytic production of ammonium persulfate (APS) as an example. The original carbon black electrode for the HER is converted to an ORR electrode by first undergoing in situ anodization and then contacting O₂ or air bubbled from the bottom of the electrode. With this sole change, APS production can achieve an electric energy saving of up to 20.3%. Considering the ease and low cost of this modification, such significant electricity savings make this method very promising in the upgrade of electrochemical oxidation processes, with wide potential applications.

Metal Organic Frameworks Derived Fe-N-C Nanostructures as High-Performance Electrodes for Sodium Ion Batteries and Electromagnetic Interference (EMI) Shielding

Metal organic framework (MOF)-derived carbon nanostructures (MDC) synthesized by either calcinations or carbonization or pyrolysis are emerging as attractive materials for a wide range of applications like batteries, super-capacitors, sensors, water treatment, etc. But the process of transformation of MOFs into MDCs is time-consuming, with reactions requiring inert atmospheres and reaction time typically running into hours. In this manuscript, we report the transformation of 1,4-diazabicyclo[2.2.2]octane, (DABCO)-based MOFs into iron nitride nanoparticles embedded in nitrogen-doped carbon nanotubes by simple, fast and facile microwave pyrolysis. By using graphene oxide and carbon fiber as microwave susceptible surfaces, three-dimensional nitrogen-doped carbon nanotubes vertically grown on reduced graphene oxide (MDNCNT@rGO) and carbon fibers (MDCNT@CF), respectively, were obtained, whose utility as anode material in sodium-ion batteries (MDNCNT@rGO) and for EMI (electromagnetic interference) shielding material (MDCNT@CF) is reported.
