Biosynthesis of MgO Nanoparticles and Their Impact on the Properties of the PVA/Gelatin Nanocomposites for Smart Food Packaging Applications

Fabricating active and intelligent packaging materials has become the highest demand for catering to market needs, especially after the COVID-19 pandemic, for ensuring food safety. Thus, the wider objective of this article was to promote active and smart packaging biofilms possessing antibacterial and humidity-sensing properties for sustainable poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA)/gelatin (Ge) reinforced with biosynthesized magnesium nanoparticles (MgO NPs) by a solvent-casting route. The UV-visible spectrum has been utilized to determine the optimized biosynthesized MgO NPs and then the nanostructure of optimized MgO NPs investigated by varying techniques such as XRD, SEM-EDX, TEM, FT-IR, and thermogravimetric analysis. Four MgO NPs proportions (i.e., 1, 3, 5, and 10 wt %) were used to fabricate PVA/Ge biofilms. In the biofilms system, the tensile results showcased that the nanocomposite film containing 5 wt % of MgO NPs had the highest tensile strength value (i.e., 22.10 MPs) compared to the other biofilms or the unfilled blank (i.e., 6.30 MPs). Correspondingly, the humidity-sensing data revealed that the PVA/Ge-1% MgO NPs sensor had higher sensitivity over a broad range of relative humidity from (7-97% RH) and at 100 Hz. Additionally, the hydrophobicity of biofilms, measured by water contact angle, UV-stability, and antioxidant and antibacterial properties was also analyzed to possibly use these biofilms in active food packaging with extended shelf life of foodstuffs. However, the PVA/Ge-1% MgO NPs biofilm was predominately found to possess attractive sensing properties and could be considered as a sensor for intelligent food packaging.

Characterization and Application of Guar Gum/Polyvinyl Alcohol-Based Food Packaging Films Containing Betacyanins from Pokeweed (Phytolacca acinosa Roxb.) Berries and Silver Nanoparticles

Food packaging films were prepared by using guar gum/polyvinyl alcohol (GP) as the film matrix, 2% Ag nanoparticles (AgNPs) as reinforcing filler and antimicrobial agent, and 1%, 2% and 3% pokeweed betacyanins (PB) as the colorant and antioxidant agent. The structures and color-changing, barrier, mechanical, thermal and antioxidant/antibacterial properties of different films were measured. The results show that the PB were pH-sensitive pigments with pink, purple and yellow colors at pH 3-8, pH 9-11 and pH 12, respectively. PB improved the compatibility of guar gum and polyvinyl alcohol through hydrogen bonds. The films with PB showed a color-changing capacity under ammonia vapor and good color stability in chilled storage. AgNPs and PB elevated the barrier capacity of GP film to light, water vapor and oxygen gas. Meanwhile, AgNPs and PB improved the stiffness, thermal stability and antioxidant/antibacterial activity of GP film. The film with AgNPs and 3% PB showed the highest barrier capacity, stiffness, thermal stability and antioxidant/antimicrobial activity. In shrimp spoilage test, the films with AgNPs and 2% and 3% PB indicated shrimp freshness through film color changes. The results reveal the potential use of the prepared films in active and smart packaging.

Bioactive Materials Based on Hydroxypropyl Methylcellulose and Silver Nanoparticles: Structural-Morphological Characterization and Antimicrobial Testing

The progress achieved in recent years in the biomedical field justifies the objective evaluation of new techniques and materials obtained by using silver in different forms as metallic silver, silver salts, and nanoparticles. Thus, the antibacterial, antiviral, antifungal, antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory activity of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) confers to newly obtained materials characteristics that make them ideal candidates in a wide spectrum of applications. In the present study, the use of hydroxypropyl methyl cellulose (HPMC) in the new formulation, by embedding AgNPs with antibacterial activity, using poly(N-vinylpyrrolidone) (PVP) as a stabilizing agent was investigated. AgNPs were incorporated in HPMC solutions, by thermal reduction of silver ions to silver nanoparticles, using PVP as a stabilizer; a technique that ensures the efficiency and selectivity of the obtained materials. The rheological properties, morphology, in vitro antimicrobial activity, and stability/catching of Ag nanoparticles in resulting HPMC/PVP-AgNPs materials were evaluated. The obtained rheological parameters highlight the multifunctional roles of PVP, focusing on the stabilizing effect of new formulations but also the optimization of some properties of the studied materials. The silver amount was quantified using the spectroscopy techniques (energy-dispersive X-ray fluorescence (XRF), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX)), while formation of the AgNPs was confirmed using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and dynamic light scattering (DLS). Also, the morphological examination (Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) and Scanning electron microscopy (SEM)) by means of the texture roughness parameters has evidenced favorable characteristics for targeted applications. Antibacterial activity was tested against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus and was found to be substantially improved was silver was added in the studied systems.

Silver Nanoparticles Densely Grafted with Nitroxides as a Recyclable Green Catalyst in the Selective Oxidation of Alcohols

The selective oxidation of alcohols, leading to appropriate aldehydes, is widely recognised as one of the most important reactions in organic synthesis. With ever-increasing environmental concerns, much attention has been directed toward developing catalytic protocols that use molecular oxygen as an oxidant. An ideal green oxidation process should employ a highly active, selective and recyclable catalyst that can work with oxygen under mild conditions. This paper presents a successful application of densely grafted silver nanostructures with stable nitroxide radicals (N-AgNPs) as an effective, easily-recovered and regenerable catalyst for the selective oxidation of alcohols. The fabricated ultra-small and narrow dispersive silver nanoparticles have been fully characterised using physicochemical methods (TEM, DLS, XPS, TGA). N-AgNPs have been successfully applied to oxidise several model alcohols: benzyl alcohol, 4-pyridinemethanol, furfuryl alcohol, 1-phenyl ethanol, n-heptanol and allyl alcohol under mild conditions using oxygen as a stoichiometric oxidant. Notably, the fabricated nitroxide grafted silver nanoparticles (N-AgNPs) were reused more than ten times in the oxidation of a series of primary alcohols to corresponding aldehydes under mild conditions with very high yields and a selectivity close to 100%.

Biosynthesis of silver nanoparticles with antimicrobial and anticancer properties using two novel yeasts

AgNPs are nanomaterials with many potential biomedical applications. In this study, the two novel yeast strains HX-YS and LPP-12Y capable of producing biological silver nanoparticles were isolated. Sequencing of ribosomal DNA-ITS fragments, as well as partial D1/D2 regions of 26S rDNA indicated that the strains are related to species from the genus Metschnikowia. The BioAgNPs produced by HX-YS and LPP-12Y at pH 5.0-6.0 and 26 °C ranged in size from 50 to 500 nm. The antibacterial activities of yeast BioAgNPs against five pathogenic bacteria were determined. The highest antibacterial effect was observed on P. aeruginosa, with additional obvious effects on E. coli ATCC8099 and S. aureus ATCC10231. Additionally, the BioAgNPs showed antiproliferative effects on lung cancer cell lines H1975 and A579, with low toxicity in Beas 2B normal lung cells. Therefore, the AgNPs biosynthesized by HX-YS and LPP-12Y may have potential applications in the treatment of bacterial infections and cancer.

Polymeric Materials with Antibacterial Activity: A Review

Infections caused by bacteria are one of the main causes of mortality in hospitals all over the world. Bacteria can grow on many different surfaces and when this occurs, and bacteria colonize a surface, biofilms are formed. In this context, one of the main concerns is biofilm formation on medical devices such as urinary catheters, cardiac valves, pacemakers or prothesis. The development of bacteria also occurs on materials used for food packaging, wearable electronics or the textile industry. In all these applications polymeric materials are usually present. Research and development of polymer-based antibacterial materials is crucial to avoid the proliferation of bacteria. In this paper, we present a review about polymeric materials with antibacterial materials. The main strategies to produce materials with antibacterial properties are presented, for instance, the incorporation of inorganic particles, micro or nanostructuration of the surfaces and antifouling strategies are considered. The antibacterial mechanism exerted in each case is discussed. Methods of materials preparation are examined, presenting the main advantages or disadvantages of each one based on their potential uses. Finally, a review of the main characterization techniques and methods used to study polymer based antibacterial materials is carried out, including the use of single force cell spectroscopy, contact angle measurements and surface roughness to evaluate the role of the physicochemical properties and the micro or nanostructure in antibacterial behavior of the materials.

Development of Multifunctional Coating of Textile Materials Using Silver Microencapsulated Compositions

The efficiency of the method for the synthesis of silver nanoparticles using a system containing oxalic dialdehyde as a reducing agent, and polyguanidine as a stabilizer is shown. An analysis of the data of photon correlation spectroscopy characterizing the sizes of the formed particles in the Ag-polyelectrolyte system is presented. It has been established that the synthesized silver nanoparticles have a stable biocidal effect. The system of biodegradable polyelectrolytes chitosan-xanthan gum for the synthesis of the capsule shell including silver nanoparticles is selected. This will allow the formation of stable polyelectrolyte capsule shells containing oyster mushroom mycelium extract. A protocol for the synthesis of microcapsules by the method of sequential adsorption of chitosan polyelectrolytes and xanthan gum on calcium carbonate templates was developed. Silver nanoparticles are included in the capsule shell, and a biologically active drug (oyster mushroom mycelium extract) is included in the core. The technological mode of complex capsules immobilization on a textile material by the layer-by-layer method is described. The immobilization of multilayer microcapsules on a fibrous substrate is provided by a system of polyelectrolytes: positively charged chitosan and negatively charged xanthan gum. The developed multifunctional coatings make it possible to impart multifunctional properties to textile materials: antibacterial, antimycotic, high hygroscopic properties.
