Mechanical Properties and Bioactivity of Poly(Lactic Acid) Composites Containing Poly(Glycolic Acid) Fiber and Hydroxyapatite Particles

The Structural, Thermal and Morphological Characterization of Polylactic Acid/Β-Tricalcium Phosphate (PLA/Β-TCP) Composites upon Immersion in SBF: A Comprehensive Analysis

Biocomposite films based on PLA reinforced with different β-TCP contents (10%, 20%, and 25%wt.) were fabricated via solvent casting and immersed in SBF for 7, 14, and 21 days. The bioactivity, morphological, and thermal behavior of composites with immersion were studied using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX) microanalysis, weight loss (WL), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and gel permeation chromatography (GPC). This broad analysis leads to a deeper understanding of the evolution of the polymer-filler interaction with the degradation of the biocomposites. The results showed that β-TCP gradually evolved into carbonated hydroxyapatite as the immersion time increased. This evolution affected the interaction of β-TCP with PLA. PLA and β-TCP interactions differed from PLA and carbonated hydroxyapatite interactions. It was observed that β-TCP inhibited PLA hydrolysis but accelerated the thermal degradation of the polymer. β-TCP retarded the cold crystallization of PLA and hindered its crystallinity. However, after immersion in SBF, particles accelerated the cold crystallization of PLA. Therefore, considering the evolution of β-TCP with immersion in SBF is crucial for an accurate analysis of the biocomposites' degradation. These findings enhance the comprehension of the degradation mechanism in PLA/β-TCP, which is valuable for predicting the degradation performance of PLA/β-TCP in medical applications.

High-performance and functional fully bio-based polylactic acid/polypropylene carbonate blends by in situ multistep reaction-induced interfacial control

Using a solvent-free radical grafting technique, glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) and maleic anhydride (MAH) were used as functionalized graft monomers, styrene (St) as a copolymer monomer, and grafted onto polylactic acid (PLA). A series of PLA-g-(GMA/MAH-co-St) graft copolymers were prepared by adjusting the GMA/MAH ratio. Subsequently, the prepared graft copolymers were used as a compatibilizer with PLA and polypropylene carbonate (PPC) for melt blending to prepare PLA/PPC/PLA-g-(GMA/MAH-co-St) blends. The effects of changes in the GMA/MAH ratio in the graft copolymer on the thermodynamics, rheology, optics, degradation performance, mechanical properties, and microstructure of the blend were studied. The results found that GMA, MAH, and St were successfully grafted onto PLA, and the PLA-g-(GMA/MAH-co-St) graft copolymer obtained from the reaction had a good toughening effect on the PLA/PPC blend system, which significantly improved the mechanical properties of the PLA/PPC/PLA-g-(GMA/MAH-co-St) blend without reducing its degradation performance, resulting in a biodegradable blend material with excellent comprehensive performance. In the PLA-g-(GMA/MAH-co-St) grafting reaction system, when GMA/MAH = 1.5/1.5 (w/w), the grafting degree of the graft copolymer increased most significantly, from 0.83 phr to 1.51 phr. This composition of graft copolymer can effectively improve the compatibility between PLA and PPC. The resulting PLA/PPC blend can maintain good melt flow properties (MFR of 14.51 g/10 min), high transparency, and low haze (light transmittance of 91.56 %, haze of 20.5 %), while significantly improving its thermal stability (T95%, Tmax, and Et increased by 12.87 °C, 20.33 °C, and 32.00 kJ/mol, respectively). Moreover, when introducing PLA-g-(GMA/MAH-co-St) (GMA/MAH = 1.5/1.5 (wt/wt)) graft copolymer into the system, the toughness of the PLA/PPC/PLA-g-(GMA/MAH-co-St) blend system is optimal, with the notch impact strength and fracture elongation increasing to 184.6 % and 535.4 % of the PLA/PPC blend, respectively, at which point the fracture surface of the impact sample shows a wrinkled fracture feature indicative of toughness.

Improvement of properties of polylactic acid/polypropylene carbonate blends using epoxy soybean oil as an efficient compatibilizer

Epoxidized soybean oil (ESO) was used as a compatibilizer and blended with polylactic acid (PLA) and polypropylene carbonate (PPC) resin to prepare a series of PLA/PPC/ESO blends with varying compositions. The influence of the variation in the amount of ESO added to the blend system on the thermal properties, optical properties, rheological properties, mechanical properties, and microscopic morphology of the blends was studied. The research indicates that ESO can react with PLA and PPC to form a chemical bond interface, which improves the compatibility of PLA and PPC to a certain extent. With the increase in the amount of ESO added to the blend (1- 5 phr), the complete decomposition temperature, storage modulus, loss modulus, complex viscosity, notched impact strength, and elongation at break of the blend all show a trend of continuous increase. At the same time, the melt flow rate, light transmittance, and tensile strength of the blend do not show significant fluctuations. When the amount of ESO in the system is 5 phr, compared with the PLA/PPC blend, the notched impact strength and elongation at break of the PLA/PPC/ESO blend increase from 4270.3 J/m2, 43.89 % to 8560.4 J/m2, 211.28 %, respectively, and its tensile strength and transmittance still remain around 63 MPa, 92 %. This improves the toughness of the blend while maintaining its rigidity, demonstrating excellent mechanical and optical properties. At this time, the microscopic morphology of the fracture surface of the impact sample also shows obvious characteristics of tough fracture. However, when the amount of ESO added to the blend is excessive (6 phr), the compatibility of the blending system decreases, which will degrade the performance of the blending material and ultimately destroy the phase morphology of the blend and reduce its mechanical properties.

PRP significantly promotes the adhesion and migration of vascular smooth muscle cells on stent material

BACKGROUND

The adhesion and survival state of cells on scaffold material is a major problem in tissue-engineered blood vessel (TEBV) culture. Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) contains a large amount of biologically active factors and fibrin, which is expected to play an important role in TEBV culture.

PURPOSE

To combine PRP with cells and scaffold material to promote cell adhesion and biological activity on the scaffold material.

METHODS

The adhesion status and migration of SMCs under the optimal concentration suitable for SMC growth and the optimal concentration of PRP were examined by scanning electron microscopy, HE staining, CCK-8 assays, qPCR, WB, and other experimental methods and compared with those under the conventional culture (20% FBS); finally, the effect of PRP on the deposition of ECM in vascular tissue engineering culture was verified by three-dimensional culture.

RESULTS

PRP at 20% is a suitable concentration for SMCs. Compared with the control group, the 20% PRP group had better migration, and the number of SMC adhesions was significantly higher than that of the control group. In addition, collagen deposition in the experimental group was significantly higher than that in the control group.

CONCLUSION

PRP (20%) can promote SMC adhesion, migration, and collagen deposition on the scaffold material.

Synthesis of L-Ornithine- and L-Glutamine-Linked PLGAs as Biodegradable Polymers

L-ornithine and L-glutamine are amino acids used for ammonia and nitrogen transport in the human body. Novel biodegradable synthetic poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) derivatives were synthesized via conjugation with L-ornithine or L-glutamine, which were selected due to their biological importance. L-ornithine or L-glutamine was integrated into a PLGA polymer with EDC coupling reactions as a structure developer after the synthesis of PLGA via the polycondensation and ring-opening polymerization of lactide and glycolide. The chemical, thermal, and degradation property-structure relationships of PLGA, PLGA-L-ornithine, and PLGA-L-glutamine were identified. The conjugation between PLGA and the amino acid was confirmed through observation of an increase in the number of carbonyl carbons in the range of 170-160 ppm in the 13C NMR spectrum and the signal of the amide carbonyl vibration at about 1698 cm-1 in the FTIR spectrum. The developed PLGA-L-ornithine and PLGA-L-glutamine derivatives were thermally stable and energetic materials. In addition, PLGA-L-ornithine and PLGA-L-glutamine, with their unique hydrophilic properties, had faster degradation times than PLGA in terms of surface-type erosion, which covers their requirements. L-ornithine- and L-glutamine-linked PLGAs are potential candidates for development into biodegradable PLGA-derived biopolymers that can be used as raw materials for biomaterials.

Evaluation of Physicochemical Properties of a Hydroxyapatite Polymer Nanocomposite for Use in Fused Filament Fabrication

Over the last decade, there has been an increasing interest in the use of bioceramics for biomedical purposes. Bioceramics, specifically those made of calcium phosphate, are commonly used in dental and orthopaedic applications. In this context, hydroxyapatite (HA) is considered a viable option for hard tissue engineering applications given its compositional similarity to bioapatite. However, owing to their poor mechanobiology and biodegradability, traditional HA-based composites have limited utilisation possibilities in bone, cartilage and dental applications. Therefore, the efficiency of nano HA (nHA) has been explored to address these limitations. nHA has shown excellent remineralising effects on initial enamel lesions and is widely used as an additive for improving existing dental materials. Furthermore, three-dimensional printing (3DP) or fused deposition modelling that can be used for creating dental and hard tissue scaffolds tailored to each patient's specific anatomy has attracted considerable interest. However, the materials used for producing hard tissue with 3DP are still limited. Therefore, the current study aimed to develop a hybrid polymer nanocomposite composed of nHA, nanoclay (NC) and polylactic acid (PLA) that was suitable for 3DP. The nHA polymer nanocomposites were extruded into filaments and their physiochemical properties were evaluated. The results showed that the addition of nHA and NC to the PLA matrix significantly increased the water absorption and contact angle. In addition, the hardness increased from 1.04 to 1.25 times with the incorporation of nHA. In sum, the nHA-NC-reinforced PLA could be used as 3DP filaments to generate bone and dental scaffolds, and further studies are needed on the biocompatibility of this material.

VEGF-modified PLA/HA nanocomposite fibrous membrane for cranial defect repair in rats

A major obstacle to bone tissue repair is the difficulty in establishing a rapid blood supply areas of bone defects. Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF)-infused tissue-engineered scaffolds offer a possible therapeutic option for these types of injuries. Their role is to accelerate angiogenesis and improve bone healing. In this study, we used electrostatic spinning and biofactor binding to construct polylactic acid (PLA)/hydroxyapatite (HA)-VEGF scaffold materials and clarify their pro-vascular role in bone defect areas for efficient bone defect repair. PLA/HA nanocomposite fibrous membranes were manufactured by selecting suitable electrostatic spinning parameters. Heparin and VEGF were bound sequentially, and then the VEGF binding and release curves of the fiber membranes were calculated. A rat cranial defect model was constructed, and PLA/HA fiber membranes bound with VEGF and unbound with VEGF were placed for treatment. Finally, we compared bone volume recovery and vascular recovery in different fibrous membrane sites. A VEGF concentration of 2.5 µg/mL achieved the maximum binding and uniform distribution of PLA/HA fibrous membranes. Extended-release experiments showed that VEGF release essentially peaked at 14 days. In vivo studies showed that PLA/HA fibrous membranes bound with VEGF significantly increased the number of vessels at the site of cranial defects, bone mineral density, bone mineral content, bone bulk density, trabecular separation, trabecular thickness, and the number of trabeculae at the site of defects in rats compared with PLA/HA fibrous membranes not bound with VEGF. VEGF-bound PLA/HA fibrous membranes demonstrate the slow release of VEGF. The VEGF binding process does not disrupt the morphology and structure of the fibrous membranes. The fibrous membranes could stimulate both osteogenesis and angiogenesis. Taken together, this research provides a new strategy for critical-sized bone defects repairing.

A comparative analysis of 3D printed scaffolds consisting of poly(lactic-co-glycolic) acid and different bioactive mineral fillers: aspects of degradation and cytocompatibility

Their excellent mechanical properties, degradability and suitability for processing by 3D printing technologies make the thermoplastic polylactic acid and its derivatives favourable candidates for biomaterial-based bone regeneration therapies. In this study, we investigated whether bioactive mineral fillers, which are known to promote bone healing based on their dissolution products, can be integrated into a poly(L-lactic-co-glycolic) acid (PLLA-PGA) matrix and how key characteristics of degradation and cytocompatibility are influenced. The polymer powder was mixed with particles of CaCO3, SrCO3, strontium-modified hydroxyapatite (SrHAp) or tricalcium phosphates (α-TCP, β-TCP) in a mass ratio of 90 : 10; the resulting composite materials have been successfully processed into scaffolds by the additive manufacturing method Arburg Plastic Freeforming (APF). Degradation of the composite scaffolds was investigated in terms of dimensional change, bioactivity, ion (calcium, phosphate, strontium) release/uptake and pH development during long-term (70 days) incubation. The mineral fillers influenced the degradation behavior of the scaffolds to varying degrees, with the calcium phosphate phases showing a clear buffer effect and an acceptable dimensional increase. The amount of 10 wt% SrCO3 or SrHAp particles did not appear to be appropriate to release a sufficient amount of strontium ions to exert a biological effect in vitro. Cell culture experiments with the human osteosarcoma cell line SAOS-2 and human dental pulp stem cells (hDPSC) indicated the high cytocompatibility of the composites: For all material groups cell spreading and complete colonization of the scaffolds over the culture period of 14 days as well as an increase of the specific alkaline phosphatase activity, typical for osteogenic differentiation, were observed.

Dispersant and Protective Roles of Amphiphilic Poly(ethylene phosphate) Block Copolymers in Polyester/Bone Mineral Composites

Composites of synthetic bone mineral substitutes (BMS) and biodegradable polyesters are of particular interest for bone surgery and orthopedics. Manufacturing of composite scaffolds commonly uses mixing of the BMS with polymer melts. Melt processing requires a high homogeneity of the mixing, and is complicated by BMS-promoted thermal degradation of polymers. In our work, poly(L-lactide) (PLLA) and poly(ε-caprolactone) (PCL) composites reinforced by commercial β-tricalcium phosphate (βTCP) or synthesized carbonated hydroxyapatite with hexagonal and plate-like crystallite shapes (hCAp and pCAp, respectively) were fabricated using injection molding. pCAp-based composites showed advanced mechanical and thermal characteristics, and the best set of mechanical characteristics was observed for the PLLA-based composite containing 25 wt% of pCAp. To achieve compatibility of polyesters and pCAp, reactive block copolymers of PLLA or PCL with poly(tert-butyl ethylene phosphate) (C1 and C2, respectively) were introduced to the composite. The formation of a polyester-b-poly(ethylene phosphoric acid) (PEPA) compatibilizer during composite preparation, followed by chemical binding of PEPA with pCAp, have been proved experimentally. The presence of 5 wt% of the compatibilizer provided deeper homogenization of the composite, resulting in a marked increase in strength and moduli as well as a more pronounced nucleation effect during isothermal crystallization. The use of C1 increased the thermal stability of the PLLA-based composite, containing 25 wt% of pCAp. In view of positive impacts of polyester-b-PEPA on composite homogeneity, mechanical characteristics, and thermal stability, polyester-b-PEPA will find application in the further development of composite materials for bone surgery and orthopedics.

Hydrothermally synthesized titanium/hydroxyapatite as photoactive and antibacterial biomaterial

The present work investigated hydrothermal synthesis of titanium/hydroxyapatite (Ti/HA) nanocomposite at varied Ti content. The synthesis was performed by coprecipitation method using CaO, ammonium dihydrogen phosphate and titanium oxide chloride precursor with the additional cetyl trimethyl ammonium chloride as templating agent, followed by hydrothermal treatment at 150 °C. The derived materials were characterized by x-ray diffraction, x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy analyses. The photocatalytic properties of materials were tested on methyl violet (MV) photocatalytic oxidation, meanwhile the antibacterial testing was performed against Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Klebsiella pneumonia, and Streptococcus pyogenes. In addition, cytotoxicity evaluation of the materials as potential biomaterial was also conducted. The results showed that physicochemical character of Ti/HA exhibits exhibit the excellent properties to be photocatalyst along with antibacterial activity. From the detail study of effect of varied titanium content ranging from 5 to 10 %wt., the increasing crystallite size of anatase phase of about 25.81 nm and 38.22 nm for Ti content of 5 and 10 % wt., respectively. In other side, the band gap energy value increases as the increasing Ti content, i.e. the values are 3.08; 3.18; and 3.20 eV for Ti content of 5, 10, 20 % wt., respectively. The band gap energy is correlated with the photocatalytic activity which the highest MV degradation was 96.46% over Ti/HA with 20% wt. of Ti (Ti20/HA). The nanocomposites also express the antibacterial activity with comparable minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) with other similar Ti/HA nanocomposites. The MIC values of Ti20/HA against E. coli, S. aureus, K. pneumonia, and S. pyogenes are 25; 25; 50 and 50 μg/mL, respectively. In addition, the cytotoxicity test revealed the potency to be a biomimetic material as shown by severe toxicity.

Characterization of PLA/PCL/Green Mussel Shells Hydroxyapatite (HA) Biocomposites Prepared by Chemical Blending Methods

Recently, there has been an increase in the number of studies conducted on the process of developing hydroxyapatite (HA) to use in biocomposites. HA can be derived from natural sources such as bovine bone. The HA usage obtained from green mussel shells in biocomposites in this study will be explored. The research goal is to investigate the composition effect of biomaterials derived from polycaprolactone (PCL), polylactic acid (PLA), as well as HA obtained from green mussel shells with a chemical blending method on mechanical properties and degradation rate. First, 80 mL of chloroform solution was utilized to immerse 16 g of the PLA/PCL mixture with the ratios of 85:15 and 60:40 for 30 min. A magnetic stirrer was used to mix the solution for an additional 30 min at a temperature and speed of 50 °C and 300 rpm. Next, the hydroxyapatite (HA) was added in percentages of 5%, 10%, and 15%, as well as 20% of the PLA/PCL mixture's total weight. It was then stirred for 1 h at 100 rpm at 65 °C to produce a homogeneous mixture of HA and polymer. The biocomposite mixture was then added into a glass mold as per ASTM D790. Following this, biocomposite specimens were tested for their density, biodegradability, and three points of bending in determining the effect of HA and polymer composition on the degradation rate and mechanical properties. According to the findings of this study, increasing the HA and PLA composition yields a rise in the mechanical properties of the biocomposites. However, the biocomposite degradation rate is increasing.

Design Strategies and Biomimetic Approaches for Calcium Phosphate Scaffolds in Bone Tissue Regeneration

Bone is a complex biologic tissue, which is extremely relevant for various physiological functions, in addition to movement, organ protection, and weight bearing. The repair of critical size bone defects is a still unmet clinical need, and over the past decades, material scientists have been expending efforts to find effective technological solutions, based on the use of scaffolds. In this context, biomimetics which is intended as the ability of a scaffold to reproduce compositional and structural features of the host tissues, is increasingly considered as a guide for this purpose. However, the achievement of implants that mimic the very complex bone composition, multi-scale structure, and mechanics is still an open challenge. Indeed, despite the fact that calcium phosphates are widely recognized as elective biomaterials to fabricate regenerative bone scaffolds, their processing into 3D devices with suitable cell-instructing features is still prevented by insurmountable drawbacks. With respect to biomaterials science, new approaches maybe conceived to gain ground and promise for a substantial leap forward in this field. The present review provides an overview of physicochemical and structural features of bone tissue that are responsible for its biologic behavior. Moreover, relevant and recent technological approaches, also inspired by natural processes and structures, are described, which can be considered as a leverage for future development of next generation bioactive medical devices.

Applications of Polymers for Organ-on-Chip Technology in Urology

Organ-on-chips (OOCs) are microfluidic devices used for creating physiological organ biomimetic systems. OOC technology brings numerous advantages in the current landscape of preclinical models, capable of recapitulating the multicellular assemblage, tissue-tissue interaction, and replicating numerous human pathologies. Moreover, in cancer research, OOCs emulate the 3D hierarchical complexity of in vivo tumors and mimic the tumor microenvironment, being a practical cost-efficient solution for tumor-growth investigation and anticancer drug screening. OOCs are compact and easy-to-use microphysiological functional units that recapitulate the native function and the mechanical strain that the cells experience in the human bodies, allowing the development of a wide range of applications such as disease modeling or even the development of diagnostic devices. In this context, the current work aims to review the scientific literature in the field of microfluidic devices designed for urology applications in terms of OOC fabrication (principles of manufacture and materials used), development of kidney-on-chip models for drug-toxicity screening and kidney tumors modeling, bladder-on-chip models for urinary tract infections and bladder cancer modeling and prostate-on-chip models for prostate cancer modeling.

Effects of drug concentration and PLGA addition on the properties of electrospun ampicillin trihydrate-loaded PLA nanofibers

The aim of this study was to produce ampicillin trihydrate-loaded poly(lactic acid) (PLA) and PLA/poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLA/PLGA) polymeric nanofibers via electrospinning using 1,1,1,3,3,3-hexafluoro-2-propanol (HFIP) as the solvent for local application in tissue engineering. The effects of ampicillin trihydrate concentration (4-12%) and addition of PLGA (20-80%) on the spinnability of the solutions, morphology, average nanofiber diameter, encapsulation efficiency, drug release, and mechanical properties of PLA and PLA/PLGA nanofibers were examined. All nanofibers were bead-free and uniform. They had favorable encapsulation efficiency (approx. 90%) and mechanical properties. The increase in the amount of ampicillin trihydrate caused an increase in the diameter and burst effect of the nanofibers. The drug release ended on the 7th and 3rd day with nanofibers containing 4% and 12% of drug, respectively. The prolonged and controlled drug release for ten days was obtained with nanofibers containing 8% of drug. Thus, the ideal drug concentration was determined to be 8%. Nanofibers containing PLA/PLGA had a larger diameter than those including PLA. In addition, both the strength and elongation of nanofibers decreased depending on the increase in nanofiber size with the addition of PLGA, increased amount of drug, and ratios of PLGA. Drug release studies showed that PLA/PLGA nanofibers exhibited a lower burst effect and a decrease in drug release when compared to PLA nanofibers. Finally, PLA/PLGA nanofibers can be produced with enhanced encapsulation efficiency and mechanical properties, resulting in controlled and tailored release of ampicillin trihydrate for at least ten days. In conclusion, it was demonstrated that the addition of PLGA in different ratios and the amount of drug can be manipulated to obtain the desired properties (average nanofiber diameter, morphology, in vitro drug release, and mechanical properties) of PLA nanofibers.

Effect of In-Mold Annealing on the Properties of Asymmetric Poly(l-lactide)/Poly(d-lactide) Blends Incorporated with Nanohydroxyapatite

The proper choice of a material system for bioresorbable synthetic bone graft substitutes imposes strict requirements for mechanical properties, bioactivity, biocompatibility, and osteoconductivity. This study aims to characterize the effect of in-mold annealing on the properties of nanocomposite systems based on asymmetric poly(l-lactide) (PLLA)/Poly(d-lactide) (PDLA) blends at 5 wt.% PDLA loading, which was incorporated with nano-hydroxyapatite (HA) at various concentrations (1, 5, 10, 15 wt.%). Samples were melt-blended and injection molded into “cold” mold (50 °C) and hot mold (100 °C). The results showed that the tensile modulus, crystallinity, and thermal-resistance were enhanced with increasing content of HA and blending with 5 wt.% of PDLA. In-mold annealing further improved the properties mentioned above by achieving a higher degree of crystallinity. In-mold annealed PLLA/5PDLA/15HA samples showed an increase of crystallinity by ~59%, tensile modulus by ~28%, and VST by ~44% when compared to neat hot molded PLLA. On the other hand, the % elongation values at break as well as tensile strength of the PLLA and asymmetric nanocomposites were lowered with increasing HA content and in-mold annealing. Moreover, in-mold annealing of asymmetric blends and related nanocomposites caused the embrittlement of material systems. Impact toughness, when compared to neat cold molded PLLA, was improved by ~44% with in-mold annealing of PLLA/1HA. Furthermore, fracture morphology revealed fine dispersion and distribution of HA at 1 wt.% concentration. On the other hand, HA at a high concentration of 15 wt.% show agglomerates that worked as stress concentrators during impact loading.

A new cancellous bone material of silk fibroin/cellulose dual network composite aerogel reinforced by nano-hydroxyapatite filler

Composites materials comprised of biopolymeric aerogel matrices and inorganic nano-hydroxyapatite (n-HA) fillers have received considerable attention in bone engineering. Although with significant progress in aerogel-based biomaterials, the brittleness and low strengths limit the application. The improvements in toughness and mechanical strength of aerogel-based biomaterials are in great need. In this work, an alkali urea system was used to dissolve, regenerate and gelate cellulose and silk fibroin (SF) to prepare composite aerosol. A dual network structure was shaped in the composite aerosol materials interlaced by sheet-like SF and reticular cellulose wrapping n-HA on the surface. Through uniaxial compression, the density of the composite aerogel material was close to the one of natural bone, and mechanical strength and toughness were high. Our work indicates that the composite aerogel has the same mechanical strength range as cancellous bone when the ratio of cellulose, n-HA and SF being 8:1:1. In vitro cell culture showed HEK-293T cells cultured on composite aerogels had high ability of adhesion, proliferation and differentiation. Totally, the presented biodegradable composite aerogel has application potential in bone tissue engineering.
