Aquatic Environment Exposure and Toxicity of Engineered Nanomaterials Released from Nano-Enabled Products: Current Status and Data Needs

Molecular characterization of heat shock protein 70 and 90 genes and their expression analysis in air-breathing magur catfish (Clarias magur) while exposed to zinc oxide nanoparticles

The air-breathing magur catfish (Clarias magur) are frequently challenged with high environmental pollutants, including that of various metal nanoparticles (NPs) in their natural habitats. Heat shock proteins (HSPs) are essential molecular chaperones for preserving intracellular protein homeostasis in eukaryotic cells. In aquatic animals, HSPs are known to play important defensive roles associated with various environmental stress-related cellular damages. In the present investigation, we characterized the molecular and structural organization of distinct HSPs and their potential induction of HSP genes in multiple magur catfish tissues while exposed to ZnO NPs for 14 days. The sequence alignment of four HSP genes (hsp70, hsc70, hsp90a, and hsp90b) of magur catfish demonstrated evolutionary parallels with bony fishes and total conservation of active sites across the amphibia, fish, and mammals. From the architectural analysis of HSP70, HSC70, HSP90a, and HSP90b proteins, a structural similarity with mammals was observed, suggesting the functional resemblances of the studied HSPs in chaperone mechanisms. In the examined tissues, the mRNAs of HSP genes expressed constitutively. Exposure of C. magur to ZnO NPs (10 mg/L) in situ led to a considerable increase in the levels of mRNAs for several HSP genes and translated proteins, with HSP70 exhibiting the highest level of expression. Thus, it can be contemplated that HSPs may be involved in defending the magur catfish against the ZnO NP- and other metal NP-mediated cellular damages. The results provide new insights into the involvement of HSP machinery during adaptation to the ZnO NP-induced stress in magur catfish.

Impact of nanopollution on plant growth, photosynthesis, toxicity, and metabolism in the agricultural sector: An updated review

Nanotechnology provides distinct benefits to numerous industrial and commercial fields, and has developed into a discipline of intense interest to researchers. Nanoparticles (NPs) have risen to prominence in modern agriculture due to their use in agrochemicals, nanofertilizers, and nanoremediation. However, their potential negative impacts on soil and water ecosystems, as well as plant growth and physiology, have caused concern for researchers and policymakers. Concerns have been expressed regarding the ecological consequences and toxicity effects associated with nanoparticles as a result of their increased production and usage. Moreover, the accumulation of nanoparticles in the environment poses a risk, not only because of the possibility of plant damage but also because nanoparticles may infiltrate the food chain. In this review, we have documented the beneficial and detrimental effects of NPs on seed germination, shoot and root growth, plant biomass, and nutrient assimilation. Nanoparticles exert toxic effects by inducing ROS generation and stimulating cytotoxic and genotoxic effects, thereby leading to cell death in several plant species. We have provided possible mechanisms by which nanoparticles induce toxicity in plants. In addition to the toxic effects of NPs, we highlighted the importance of nanomaterials in the agricultural sector. Thus, understanding the structure, size, and concentration of nanoparticles that will improve plant growth or induce plant cell death is essential. This updated review reveals the multifaceted connection between nanoparticles, soil and water pollution, and plant biology in the context of agriculture.

Ecotoxicity studies of two atrazine nanoformulations: From the evaluation of stability in media to the effects on aquatic organisms

In the field of agriculture, nanopesticides have been developed as an alternative to the conventional pesticides, being more efficient for pest control. However, before their widespread application it is essential to evaluate their safe application and no environmental impacts. In this paper, we evaluated the toxicological effects of two kinds of atrazine nanoformulations (ATZ NPs) in different biological models (Raphidocelis subcapitata, Danio rerio, Lemna minor, Artemia salina, Lactuca sativa and Daphnia magna) and compared the results with nanoparticle stability over time and the presence of natural organic matter (NOM). The systems showed different characteristics for Zein (ATZ NPZ) (184 ± 2 nm with a PDI of 0.28 ± 0.04 and zeta potential of (30.4 ± 0.05 mV) and poly(epsilon-caprolactone (ATZ PCL) (192 ± 3 nm, polydispersity (PDI) of 0.28 ± 0.28 and zeta potential of -18.8 ± 1.2 mV) nanoparticles. The results showed that there is a correlation between nanoparticles stability and the presence of NOM in the medium and Environmental Concentrations (EC) values. The stability loss or an increase in nanoparticle size result in low toxicity for R. subcapitata and L. minor. For D. magna and D. rerio, the presence of NOM in the medium reduces the ecotoxic effects for ATZ NPZ nanoparticles, but not for ATZ NPs, showing that the nanoparticles characteristics and their interaction with NOM can modulate toxic effects. Nanoparticle stability throughout the evaluation must be considered and become an integral part of toxicity protocol guidelines for nanopesticides, to ensure test quality and authentic results regarding nanopesticide effects in target and non-target organisms.

Individual and binary exposure to nanoscales of silver, titanium dioxide, and silicon dioxide alters viability, growth, and reproductive system: Hidden indices to re-establish artemia as a toxicological model in saline waters

This study evaluated and compared the individual and combined toxicity of AgNPs, TiO₂NPs, and SiO₂NPs to life cycle of A. salina. To this end, both stability and toxicity of AgNPs were determined in the presence of TiO₂NPs and SiO₂NPs. The colloidal stability of AgNPs decreased in the presence of the other two NPs, especially SiO₂NPs. AgNPs displayed acute toxicity to A. salina, whereas SiO₂NPs and TiO₂NPs chronically induced toxicity in a concentration- and time-dependent manner during 28-day exposure. The experimental NPs significantly decreased the weight and length of A. salina and induced reproductive toxicity through perturbation in first brood timespan, sexual maturity, egg development time, egg pouch area, offspring quality, and fecundity. Exposure to AgNPs shifted the mode of reproduction in brine shrimp from ovoviviparity to oviparity, and also co-presence of AgNPs with SiO₂NPs or TiO₂NPs caused infertility. Generally, their individual toxicity was in order of AgNPs > TiO₂NPs > SiO₂NPs, and binary exposure to AgNPs-SiO₂NPs appear to be more threatening than AgNPs-TiO₂NPs to A. salina. Together, this study highlights that these nanoparticles could disrupt reproductive health of A. salina and lead to alterations in population dynamics and aquatic ecosystem balance.

A Content Review of Life Cycle Assessment of Nanomaterials: Current Practices, Challenges, and Future Prospects

This paper provides a comprehensive review of 71 previous studies on the life cycle assessment (LCA) of nanomaterials (NMs) from 2001 to 2020 (19 years). Although various studies have been carried out to assess the efficiency and potential of wastes for nanotechnology, little attention has been paid to conducting a comprehensive analysis related to the environmental performance and hotspot of NMs, based on LCA methodology. Therefore, this paper highlights and discusses LCA methodology’s basis (goal and scope definition, system boundary, life cycle inventory, life cycle impact assessment, and interpretation) to insights into current practices, limitations, progress, and challenges of LCA application NMs. We found that there is still a lack of comprehensive LCA study on the environmental impacts of NMs until end-of-life stages, thereby potentially supporting misleading conclusions, in most of the previous studies reviewed. For a comprehensive evaluation of LCA of NMs, we recommend that future studies should: (1) report more detailed and transparent LCI data within NMs LCA studies; (2) consider the environmental impacts and potential risks of NMs within their whole life cycle; (3) adopt a transparent and prudent characterization model; and (4) include toxicity, uncertainty, and sensitivity assessments to analyze the exposure pathways of NMs further. Future recommendations towards improvement and harmonization of methodological for future research directions were discussed and provided. This study’s findings redound to future research in the field of LCA NMs specifically, considering that the release of NMs into the environment is yet to be explored due to limited understanding of the mechanisms and pathways involved.
