Microwave Encounters Ionic Liquid: Synergistic Mechanism, Synthesis and Emerging Applications

Progress in microwave (MW) energy application technology has stimulated remarkable advances in manufacturing and high-quality applications of ionic liquids (ILs) that are generally used as novel media in chemical engineering. This Review focuses on an emerging technology via the combination of MW energy and the usage of ILs, termed microwave-assisted ionic liquid (MAIL) technology. In comparison to conventional routes that rely on heat transfer through media, the contactless and unique MW heating exploits the electromagnetic wave-ions interactions to deliver energy to IL molecules, accelerating the process of material synthesis, catalytic reactions, and so on. In addition to the inherent advantages of ILs, including outstanding solubility, and well-tuned thermophysical properties, MAIL technology has exhibited great potential in process intensification to meet the requirement of efficient, economic chemical production. Here we start with an introduction to principles of MW heating, highlighting fundamental mechanisms of MW induced process intensification based on ILs. Next, the synergies of MW energy and ILs employed in materials synthesis, as well as their merits, are documented. The emerging applications of MAIL technologies are summarized in the next sections, involving tumor therapy, organic catalysis, separations, and bioconversions. Finally, the current challenges and future opportunities of this emerging technology are discussed.

Ultrasound-Promoted preparation and application of novel bifunctional core/shell Fe3O4@SiO2@PTS-APG as a robust catalyst in the expeditious synthesis of Hantzsch esters

In this work, D-(-)-α-phenylglycine (APG)-functionalized magnetic nanocatalyst (Fe₃O₄@SiO₂@PTS-APG) was designed and successfully prepared in order to implement the principles of green chemistry for the synthesis of polyhydroquinoline (PHQ) and 1,4-dihydropyridine (1,4-DHP) derivatives under ultrasonic irradiation in EtOH. After preparing of the nanocatalyst, its structure was confirmed by different spectroscopic methods or techniques including Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM) and thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA). The performance of Fe₃O₄@SiO₂@PTS-APG nanomaterial, as a heterogeneous catalyst for the Hantzsch condensation, was examined under ultrasonic irradiation and various conditions. The yield of products was controlled under various conditions to reach more than 84% in just 10 min, which indicates the high performance of the nanocatalyst along with the synergistic effect of ultrasonic irradiation. The structure of the products was identified by melting point as well as FTIR and ¹H NMR spectroscopic methods. The Fe₃O₄@SiO₂@PTS-APG nanocatalyst is easily prepared from commercially available, lower toxic and thermally stable precursors through a cost-effective, highly efficient and environmentally friendly procedure. The advantages of this method include simplicity of the operation, reaction under mild conditions, the use of an environmentally benign irradiation source, obtaining pure products with high efficiency in short reaction times without using a tedious path, which all of them address important green chemistry principles. Finally, a reasonable mechanism is proposed for the preparation of polyhydroquinoline (PHQ) and 1,4-dihydropyridine (1,4-DHP) derivatives in the presence of Fe₃O₄@SiO₂@PTS-APG bifunctional magnetic nanocatalyst.

Solid Lipid Nanoparticles (SLN) and Nanostructured Lipid Carriers (NLC) Prepared by Microwave and Ultrasound-Assisted Synthesis: Promising Green Strategies for the Nanoworld

Many pharmaceutically active molecules are highly lipophilic, which renders their administration and adsorption in patients extremely challenging. Among the countless strategies to overcome this problem, synthetic nanocarriers have demonstrated superb efficiency as drug delivery systems, since encapsulation can effectively prevent a molecules' degradation, thus ensuring increased biodistribution. However, metallic and polymeric nanoparticles have been frequently associated with possible cytotoxic side effects. Solid lipid nanoparticles (SLN) and nanostructured lipid carriers (NLC), which are prepared with physiologically inert lipids, therefore emerged as an ideal strategy to bypass toxicities issues and avoid the use of organic solvents in their formulations. Different approaches to preparation, using only moderate amounts of external energy to facilitate a homogeneous formation, have been proposed. Greener synthesis strategies have the potential to provide faster reactions, more efficient nucleation, better particle size distribution, lower polydispersities, and furnish products with higher solubility. Particularly microwave-assisted synthesis (MAS) and ultrasound-assisted synthesis (UAS) have been utilized in the manufacturing of nanocarrier systems. This narrative review addresses the chemical aspects of those synthesis strategies and their positive influence on the characteristics of SLNs and NLCs. Furthermore, we discuss the limitations and future challenges for the manufacturing processes of both types of nanoparticles.

Functional Ionic Liquids Decorated Carbon Hybrid Nanomaterials for the Electrochemical Biosensors

Ionic liquids are gaining high attention due to their extremely unique physiochemical properties and are being utilized in numerous applications in the field of electrochemistry and bio-nanotechnology. The excellent ionic conductivity and the wide electrochemical window open a new avenue in the construction of electrochemical devices. On the other hand, carbon nanomaterials, such as graphene (GR), graphene oxide (GO), carbon dots (CDs), and carbon nanotubes (CNTs), are highly utilized in electrochemical applications. Since they have a large surface area, high conductivity, stability, and functionality, they are promising in biosensor applications. Nevertheless, the combination of ionic liquids (ILs) and carbon nanomaterials (CNMs) results in the functional ILs-CNMs hybrid nanocomposites with considerably improved surface chemistry and electrochemical properties. Moreover, the high functionality and biocompatibility of ILs favor the high loading of biomolecules on the electrode surface. They extremely enhance the sensitivity of the biosensor that reaches the ability of ultra-low detection limit. This review aims to provide the studies of the synthesis, properties, and bonding of functional ILs-CNMs. Further, their electrochemical sensors and biosensor applications for the detection of numerous analytes are also discussed.

Lanthanide-Doped Luminescent Nanophosphors via Ionic Liquids

Lanthanide (Ln3+) ion(s)-doped or rare-earth ion(s)-doped nanomaterials have been considered a very important class of nanophosphors for various photonic and biophotonic applications. Unlike semiconductors and organic-based luminescent particles, the optical properties of Ln3+-doped nanophosphors are independent of the size of the nanoparticles. However, by varying the crystal phase, morphology, and lattice strain of the host materials along with making core-shell structure, the relaxation dynamics of dopant Ln3+ ions can be effectively tuned. Interestingly, a judicious choice of dopant ions leads to unparallel photophysical dynamics, such as quantum cutting, upconversion, and energy transfer. Recently, ionic liquids (ILs) have drawn tremendous attention in the field of nanomaterials synthesis due to their unique properties like negligible vapor pressure, nonflammability, and, most importantly, tunability; thus, they are often called "green" and "designer" solvents. This review article provides a critical overview of the latest developments in the ILs-assisted synthesis of rare-earth-doped nanomaterials and their subsequent photonic/biophotonic applications, such as energy-efficient lighting and solar cell applications, photodynamic therapy, and in vivo and in vitro bioimaging. This article will emphasize how luminescence dynamics of dopant rare-earth ions can be tuned by changing the basic properties of the host materials like crystal phase, morphology, and lattice strain, which can be eventually tuned by various properties of ILs such as cation/anion combination, alkyl chain length, and viscosity. Last but not least, different aspects of ILs like their ability to act as templating agents, solvents, and reaction partners and sometimes their "three-in-one" use in nanomaterials synthesis are highlighted along with various photoluminescence mechanisms of Ln3+ ion like up- and downconversion (UC and DC).

One-Step Microwave-Assisted Synthesis of PtNiCo/rGO Electrocatalysts with High Electrochemical Performance for Direct Methanol Fuel Cells

Platinum (Pt) is widely used as an activator in direct methanol fuel cells (DMFCs). However, the development of Pt catalyst is hindered due to its high cost and CO poisoning. A multi-metallic catalyst is a promising catalyst for fuel cells. We develop a simple and rapid method to synthesize PtNiCo/rGO nanocomposites (NCs). The PtNiCo/rGO NCs catalyst was obtained by microwave-assisted synthesis of graphene oxide (GO) with Pt, Ni, and Co precursors in ethylene glycol (EG) solution after heating for 20 min. The Pt-Ni-Co nanoparticles showed a narrow particle size distribution and were uniformly dispersed on the reduced graphene oxide without agglomeration. Compared with PtNiCo catalyst, PtNiCo/rGO NCs have superior electrocatalytic properties, including a large electrochemical active surface area (ECSA), the high catalytic activity of methanol, excellent anti-toxic properties, and high electrochemical stability. The ECSA can be up to 87.41 m2/g at a scan rate of 50 mV/s. They also have the lowest oxidation potential of CO. These excellent electrochemical performances are attributed to the uniform dispersion of PtNiCo nanoparticles, good conductivity, stability, and large specific surface area of the rGO carrier. The synthesized PtNiCo/rGO nanoparticles have an average size of 17.03 ± 1.93 nm. We also investigated the effect of catalyst material size on electrocatalytic performance, and the results indicate that PtNiCo/rGO NC catalysts can replace anode catalyst materials in fuel cell applications in the future.

Preparation and Chiral Applications of Optically Active Polyamides

Chirality is omnipresent in nature and plays vital roles in living organism, and has become a hot research topic across multidisciplinary fields including chemistry, biology, physics, and material science. Meanwhile, polyamides constitute an important class of polymers and have received significant attention owing to their outstanding properties and wide-ranging applications in many areas. Judiciously introducing chirality into polyamides will undoubtedly obtain attractive chiral polymers, namely, optically active polyamides. This review describes the preparation methods of chiral polyamides, including solution polycondensation, interfacial polycondensation, ring-open polymerization, and others; the newly emerging categories of chiral polyamides, i.e., helical polyamides, chiral polyamide-imides, are also presented. The applications of optically active polyamides in chiral research fields including asymmetric catalysis, membrane separation, and enantioselective crystallization are also summarized. In addition, current challenges in chiral polyamides are further presented and future perspectives in the field are proposed.

Microwave irradiation coupled with zero-valent iron that enhances the composite geopolymerization of chromite ore processing residue and its mechanisms

In this work, microwave (MW) irradiation was employed to enhance the zero-valent iron (ZVI)-dominated de-contamination of chromite ore processing residue (COPR). A coupling system and the traditional two-step procedure were both conducted to evaluate the effects of MW irradiation on the reduction and the incorporation of COPR into the composite materials-based geopolymers. The factors including the ratios of liquid to solid, the mass ratios of ZVI to COPR, and the acid dosage had some obvious influence on the reduction of COPR in the MW system. The compressive strengths of 31.54 and 41.56 MPa were determined from the two-step procedure and the coupling system at the COPR dosage of 10% (mass ratio), respectively. The employment of MW irradiation not only strengthened the formation of the geopolymer matrices but also improved the chemical stabilization of Cr species in the solidified blocks. The coupled process was more conducive to incorporating the treated COPR into the geopolymer-based crystalline microstructures compared with the subsequent usage of ZVI reduction and MW irradiation.

Nanomaterial Synthesis in Ionic Liquids and Their Use on the Photocatalytic Degradation of Emerging Pollutants

The unique properties of ionic liquids make them suitable candidates to prepare nanoscale materials. A simple method that uses exclusively a corresponding bulk material and an ionic liquid—in this case, [P_6,6,6,14]Cl—was used to prepare AgCl nanoparticles and AgCl@Fe₃O₄ or TiO₂@Fe₃O₄ magnetic nanocomposites. The prepared nanomaterials were characterized by X-ray powder diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, ultraviolet–visible spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The photodegradation of atenolol as a model pharmaceutical pollutant in wastewater was investigated under ultraviolet–visible light irradiation using the different synthesized nanocatalysts. In the presence of 0.75 g·L⁻¹ AgCl nanoparticles, a practically complete degradation of 10 ppm of atenolol was obtained after 30 min, following pseudo-first-order reaction kinetics. The effect of different variables (concentrations, pH, oxidant agents, etc.) was analyzed. The recyclability of the nanocatalyst was tested and found to be successful. A degradation mechanism was also proposed. In order to improve the recovery stage of the nanocatalyst, the use of magnetic nanocomposites is proposed. Under the same experimental conditions, a slightly lower and slower degradation was achieved with an easier separation. The main conclusions of the paper are the suitability of the use of ionic liquids to prepare different nanocatalysts and the effectiveness of these at degrading an emerging pollutant in wastewater treatment.

Metal Sulfide Nanoparticle Synthesis with Ionic Liquids - State of the Art and Future Perspectives

Metal sulfides are among the most promising materials for a wide variety of technologically relevant applications ranging from energy to environment and beyond. Incidentally, ionic liquids (ILs) have been among the top research subjects for the same applications and also for inorganic materials synthesis. As a result, the exploitation of the peculiar properties of ILs for metal sulfide synthesis could provide attractive new avenues for the generation of new, highly specific metal sulfides for numerous applications. This article therefore describes current developments in metal sulfide nanoparticle synthesis as exemplified by a number of highlight examples. Moreover, the article demonstrates how ILs have been used in metal sulfide synthesis and discusses the benefits of using ILs over more traditional approaches. Finally, the article demonstrates some technological challenges and how ILs could be used to further advance the production and specific property engineering of metal sulfide nanomaterials, again based on a number of selected examples.

Microwave-assisted nucleophilic degradation of organophosphorus pesticides in propylene carbonate

Propylene carbonate is becoming a suitable green alternative to volatile organic solvents in the study of chemical reactions. In this study, an efficient method for nucleophilic degradation of five organophosphorus pesticides, fenitrothion, malathion, diazinon, parathion, and paraoxon, using propylene carbonate as a solvent is proposed. The effect of changing the nature of the nucleophile and the influence of microwave (MW) heating were investigated. A screening of temperatures (50 °C-120 °C) was performed under microwave heating. The pesticide degradation was followed by 31P NMR, and the extent of conversion (%) was calculated by the integration of phosphorus signals. Keeping in mind that recently it has been reported that some ionic liquids play a nucleophilic role, in this work we report for the first time the degradation of organophosphorus pesticides by using an amino acid-based ionic liquid such as Bmim[Ala] as a nucleophile and a bio-based solvent (propylene carbonate) as a reaction medium in combination with microwave heating.

A two-dimensional crystal growth in anatase titania nanostructures driven by trigonal hydronium ions

Two-dimensional growth or high-energy faceting during a wet-chemical nanocrystal growth involves a dynamic surfactant functionalization that selectively allows a particular crystal plane to grow and simultaneously, passivates others from evolving. Here, by simply controlling the concentration of hydronium ions in a liquid-phase deposition reaction, the two-dimensional growth of a few atoms thick and (001) facet in anatase titania nanostructures can be achieved. The morphology can be modified from nanocube to nanobelt and nanosheet by increasing the hydronium ion concentration. Raman analysis reveals that the trigonal hydronium ions attach to the growing planes of anatase TiO₂via a dative bonding, projecting atom-thick and large-scale (001) faceted nanobelts and nanosheets.
