Machine learning-based models for the qualitative classification of potassium ferrocyanide using electrochemical methods

Iron is one of the trace elements that plays a vital role in the human immune system, especially against variants of SARS-CoV-2 virus. Electrochemical methods are convenient for the detection due to the simplicity of instrumentation available for different analyses. The square wave voltammetry (SQWV) and differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) are useful electrochemical voltammetric techniques for diverse types of compounds such as heavy metals. The basic reason is the increased sensitivity by lowering the capacitive current. In this study, machine learning models were improved to classify concentrations of an analyte depending on the voltammograms obtained alone. SQWV and DPV were used to quantify the concentrations of ferrous ions (Fe+ 2 ) in potassium ferrocyanide (K4 Fe(CN)6 ), validated by machine learning models for the data classifications. The greatest classifier algorithms models Backpropagation Neural Networks, Gaussian Naive Bayes, Logistic Regression, K-Nearest Neighbors Algorithm, K-Means clustering, and Random Forest were used as data classifiers, based on the data sets obtained from the measured chemical. Once competed to other algorithms models used previously for the data classification, ours get greater accuracy, maximum accuracy of 100% was obtained for each analyte in 25 s for the datasets.

Water-Swellable Cellulose Nanofiber Aerogel for Control of Hemorrhage from Penetrating Wounds

Uncontrolled hemorrhage from wounds with deep and irregular cavities is short of efficient hemostats. Here we report a citric acid-cross-linked carboxymethyl cellulose nanofiber (CA-CMCNF) aerogel for the control of bleeding from penetrating wounds. The compressed CA-CMCNF aerogel could quickly swell into its original shape in water in seconds. The maximum mass and volume expansion ratios were over 6800 and 3000%, respectively. The water-swellable property allows the aerogel to self-expand and fill in the cavities of wounds. The in situ-generated expansion pressure resisted the systolic blood pressure, and the plentiful carboxyl groups triggered the active coagulation pathway, both contributing to the hemostatic capability of the aerogel. Additionally, the aerogel had good biocompatibility and excellent antibacterial capability. The animal experiments revealed that the aerogels significantly reduced both the hemostasis time and the amount of bleeding in a liver penetrating model. Therefore, this study provides a safe and robust hemostatic aerogel for controlling bleeding from penetrating wounds.

A review on plant polysaccharide based on drug delivery system for construction and application, with emphasis on traditional Chinese medicine polysaccharide

Carbohydrate polymers with unique chemical composition, molecular weight and functional chemical groups show multiple potentials in drug delivery. Most carbohydrate polymers such as plant polysaccharides exhibit advantages of biodegradability, ease of modification, low immunogenicity and low toxicity. They can be conjugated, cross-linked or functionally modified, and then used as nanocarrier materials. Polysaccharide drug delivery system can avoid the phagocytosis of the reticuloendothelial system, prevent the degradation of biomolecules, and increase the bioavailability of small molecules, thus exerting effective therapeutic effects. Therefore, they have been fully explored. In this paper, we reviewed the construction methods of drug delivery systems based on carbohydrate polymers (astragalus polysaccharide, angelica polysaccharide, lycium barbarum polysaccharide, ganoderma lucidum polysaccharide, bletilla polysaccharide, glycyrrhiza polysaccharide, and epimedium polysaccharides, etc). The application of polysaccharide drug delivery systems to deliver small molecule chemotherapeutic drugs, gene drugs, and metal ion drugs was also briefly introduced. At the same time, the role of the polysaccharide drug delivery system in tumor treatment, targeted therapy, and wound healing was discussed. In addition, the research of polysaccharide delivery systems based on the therapeutic efficacy of traditional Chinese medicine was also summarized and prospected.

Antibacterial Activity and Iron Release of Organic-Inorganic Hybrid Biomaterials Synthesized via the Sol-Gel Route

The aim of this work was the synthesis of hybrid materials of iron (II)-based therapeutic systems via the sol-gel method. Increasing amounts of polyethylene glycol (PEG 6, 12, 24, 50 wt%) were added to SiO2/Fe20 wt% to modulate the release kinetics of the drug from the systems. Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy was used to study the interactions between different components in the hybrid materials. The release kinetics in a simulated body fluid (SBF) were investigated, and the amount of Fe2+ released was detected via ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy (UV-Vis) after reaction with ortho-phenanthroline. Furthermore, biological characterization was carried out. The bioactivity of the synthesized hybrid materials was evaluated via the formation of a layer of hydroxyapatite on the surface of samples soaked in SBF using spectroscopy. Finally, the potential antibacterial properties of seven different materials against two different bacteria—E. coli and S. aureus—were investigated.

Iron-Enriched Nutritional Supplements for the 2030 Pharmacy Shelves

Iron deficiency (ID) affects people of all ages in many countries. Due to intestinal blood loss and reduced iron absorption, ID is a threat to IBD patients, women, and children the most. Current therapies can efficiently recover normal serum transferrin saturation and hemoglobin concentration but may cause several side effects, including intestinal inflammation. ID patients may benefit from innovative nutritional supplements that may satisfy iron needs without side effects. There is a growing interest in new iron-rich superfoods, like algae and mushrooms, which combine antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties with iron richness.

Enhanced Arsenic (III and V) Removal in Anoxic Environments by Hierarchically Structured Citrate/FeCO3 Nanocomposites

Novel citrate/FeCO₃ nanocomposites (CF-NCs) were synthesized for effective arsenic (III and V) sorption with constant addition of Fe²⁺ into HCO₃⁻ solution in the presence of citrate. This paper is the first report on the formation of CF-NCs, and in this study we investigate the mechanisms of arsenic uptake by the sorbent under anoxic conditions through various solid- and liquid-phase spectroscopic methods, including X-ray absorption spectroscopy. In CF-NCs, citrate was found to be incorporated into the structure of siderite (up to 17.94%) through (Fe²⁺citrate)⁻ complexes. The crystal morphology of rhombohedral siderite was changed into hierarchically nanostructured spherical aggregates composed of several sheet-like crystals, which improved the surface reactivity in the presence of sufficient citrate. Compared to pure siderite (15.2%), enhanced removal of As(III) in the range of 19.3% to 88.2% was observed, depending on the amount of incorporated citrate. The maximum sorption capacities of CF-NCs for As(III) and As(V) were 188.97 and 290.22 mg/g, respectively, which are much higher than those of previously reported siderite-based adsorbents. It was found that arsenic (III and V) sorption on CF-NCs occurred via bidentate corner-sharing surface complexation, predominantly without changes in the arsenic oxidation states. These results suggest that arsenic (III and V) can be attenuated by siderite in anoxic environments, and this attenuation can be even more effective when siderite is modified by incorporation of organic compounds such as citrate.
