The Reasons for Doing Physical Exercise Mediate the Effect of Self-Esteem on Uncontrolled Eating Amongst Nursing Personnel

The causal associations between interoception, self-regulation, non-purposeful eating behaviors, and weight status in college women: a longitudinal cross-lagged model analysis

AIMS

Excessive weight gain has led to increased obesity and mortality risk among college students. Issues with maintaining a healthy weight may be attributed to poor internal awareness and unhealthy eating behaviors. The study's purpose was to determine the longitudinal effects among interoception, self-regulation, nonpurposeful eating behaviors, and weight status (BMI) among college women.

METHODS

Data from 103 females were collected via Qualtrics over 3 timepoints (T1, T2, T3) during an academic semester. Repeated measures ANOVA and cross-lagged model analyses were used. Significant changes were found in interoceptive responsiveness, external, and uncontrolled eating throughout 3 timepoints.

RESULTS

Longitudinally, significant causal effects were found among the study measures. Among all models, higher interoceptive responsiveness (T1) predicted increased self-regulation (T2). Higher non-purposeful eating behaviors (T1) predicted reduced self-regulation (T2). Higher BMI (T1) predicted reduced non-purposeful eating behaviors (T2), however higher BMI (T2) predicted increased non-purposeful eating (T3) and reduced interoceptive responsiveness (T3). Significant causal effects were found within each non-purposeful eating behavior models.

CONCLUSION

Overall, the research study provided foundational evidence of the importance of self-regulatory skills to help prevent unhealthy eating behaviors and increased weight status in college women. Future interventions educating college women to become more internally aware and better self-regulate are needed.

Enablers and barriers to healthy eating among hospital nurses: A systematic review

BACKGROUND

Nurses are the largest health professional body globally. Despite the significant role they play in healthcare, nurses exhibit poor dietary habits and have high rates of chronic diseases. Understanding the factors underlying healthy eating for nurses in the workplace is important to implement effective interventions.

OBJECTIVE

To identify enablers and barriers related to healthy eating among nurses employed in a hospital setting.

DESIGN

A systematic literature review of qualitative, quantitative, and mixed methods research (PROSPERO ID: CRD42021290913).

DATA SOURCES

A comprehensive systematic search was conducted across PubMed, CINAHL, Embase, Web of Science and ProQuest databases for papers published after January 2015.

METHODS

Two authors independently screened titles and abstracts of 4139 deduplicated studies, performed critical appraisals on eligible studies using the Mixed Methods Appraisal Tool and extracted data relevant to the research question. This review includes papers that examined nurses' eating behaviours specifically, were conducted in a hospital setting and distinguished healthy eating from other behaviours. Data synthesis was conducted through descriptive summarisation of studies and enablers and barriers were classified according to the socio-ecological model.

RESULTS

A total of 29 studies were identified with 8024 participants. 8 studies were qualitative, 18 quantitative, and 3 were mixed method design. At an environmental level, barriers were high accessibility and availability of unhealthy foods, high cost and low availability of healthy foods and lack of storage and preparation facilities, while an enabler was close proximity to healthy options. Novel organisational enablers were considered roster planning which allowed for established routines around meals, and structured workplace programs that encouraged improvement in health behaviours, while barriers were shift work, inconsistent rosters and high work demands. An interpersonal enabler was supportive networks while barriers were work culture, social norms of celebrations and gifts of food from patients. Finally, intrapersonal barriers were stress and fatigue, personal values, beliefs, attitudes, and individual characteristics, with the latter two also acting as enablers.

CONCLUSIONS

This review identifies the complexity and interconnectedness of enablers and barriers to healthy eating across four domains of the socio-ecological model. Multi-faceted strategies which address factors across several domains are recommended for healthcare organisations to facilitate healthy eating among nurses. Further research is needed to assess these strategies and understand the extent to which eating behaviours can be improved.

Psychosocial determinants of physical activity among workers: an integrative review

Knowledge of the psychosocial determinants of physical activity is critical to informing preventive and therapeutic interventions in the workplace. This study reviewed available evidence on psychosocial factors that have been associated with physical activity among workers. Studies were selected in December 2019 from the Scopus, Web of Science, and PubMed databases, with no date limits, using the following search terms: “physical activity”, “physical exercise”, “psychosocial”, “workers”, and “working-age”. Thirty-nine studies published between 1991 and 2019 were evaluated. The determinants of physical activity investigated among workers were smoking status, stress, psychosocial working conditions, depression, anxiety, social relationships, work ability, job satisfaction, burnout, and self-efficacy. Some consistencies and controversies were observed in the associations among these determinants and physical activity and are discussed, as are suggestions for future studies. The findings of this review may be of interest to physical activity interventions designed to reduce psychosocial risks factors in work environments.

Role of Global Self-Esteem in Predicting Life Satisfaction of Nursing Students in Poland, Spain and Slovakia

Background: This study analyzed the role of global self-esteem and selected sociodemographic variables in predicting life satisfaction of nursing students in Poland, Spain and Slovakia. Methods: The study subjects were full-time nursing students from three European countries. A diagnostic survey was used as a research method, while the Rosenberg self-esteem scale (SES) and the satisfaction with life scale (SWLS) were used to collect data. Results: The research was performed on a group of 1002 students. The mean age of those surveyed was 21.6 (±3.4). The results showed significant differences both in the level of the global self-esteem index (F = 40.74; p < 0.0001) and in the level of general satisfaction with life (F = 12.71; p < 0.0001). A comparison of the structure of results demonstrated that there were significantly fewer students with high self-esteem in Spain (11.06%) than in Poland (48.27%) and in Slovakia (42.05%), while more students with a high sense of life satisfaction were recorded in Spain (64.90%) than in Poland (37.87%) or in Slovakia (47.44%). A positive, statistically significant correlation was found between global self-esteem and satisfaction with life in the group of Slovak students (r = 0.37; p < 0.0001), Polish students (r = 0.31; p < 0.0001) and Spanish students (r = 0.26; p < 0.0001). Furthermore, a regression analysis proved that three variables explaining a total of 12% output variation were the predictors of life satisfaction in Polish students. The regression factor was positive (ßeta = 0.31; R² = 0.12), which indicates a positive correlation and the largest share was attributed to global self-esteem (9%). In the group of Spanish students, global self-esteem explained 7% (ßeta = 0.27; R² = 0.07) of the output variation and 14% in the group of Slovak students (ßeta = 0.38; R² = 0.14). Conclusions: The global self-esteem demonstrates the predictive power of life satisfaction of nursing students, most clearly marked in the group of Slovak students. The measurement of the variables under consideration may facilitate the planning and implementation of programs aimed at increasing self-esteem among young people and promoting the well-being of nursing students.

Role of Global Self-Esteem, Professional Burnout and Selected Socio-Demographic Variables in the Prediction of Polish Nurses' Quality of Life - A Cross-Sectional Study

Purpose

The aim of the study was to analyze the role of global self-esteem and professional burnout in predicting Polish nurses’ quality of life.

Materials and Methods

The research involved 1806 nurses who were employed in 23 hospitals in north-eastern Poland. Forty-seven percent of nurses, aged ≤44 years, were qualified to Group 1, while 53% of nurses, aged ≥45 years, were included in Group 2. A diagnostic survey was applied as a research method. For the collection of data, the WHOQoL-Bref questionnaire, the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale and the Copenhagen Professional Burnout Inventory were used. For the statistical analysis, the significance level of P < 0.05 was adopted.

Results

Global self-esteem had a positive orientation towards the prediction of the quality of life among the younger nurse group in the psychological and social domains by explaining 20% (ßeta = 0.33; R² = 0.20) and 15% (ßeta = 0.28; R² = 0.15) of the result variation, respectively. In the older nurse group, personal burnout, which took a negative orientation in the somatic (ßeta = −0.33 R² = 0.19), social (ßeta = −0.37; R² = 0.17) and environmental domains (ßeta = −0.28; R² = 0.32), had the greatest share in predicting the quality of life.

Conclusion

There is a need for the implementation of professional burnout prevention programs, as professional burnout adversely affects the quality of life in the somatic, social and environmental domain, particularly in the older nurse group.
