Abstract
Depression is one of the most disabling mental disorders worldwide and characterized by symptoms including worthlessness, anhedonia, sleep, and appetite disturbances. Recently, studies have suggested that tryptophan (Trp) metabolism plays a key role in depressed mood through serotonin and kynurenine pathway involving enzyme tryptophan 5-monooxygenase (TPH) and indoleamine-2,3-dioxygenase (IDO) respectively. Moreover, during neuroinflammation, IDO is activated by proinflammatory cytokines and affects neurogenesis, cognition, disturbed hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, and gut homeostasis by altering the gut bacteria and its metabolites like Trp derivatives. Furthermore, over the decades, researchers have focused on understanding communication between the human microbiome, especially gut microbiota, and mental health, called gut-brain-axis (GBA), particularly through Trp metabolism. Supplementation of probiotics in depression has gained attention from researchers and clinicians. However, there is limited information about probiotics supplementation on depression involving enzyme IDO and kynurenine pathway metabolites. This review discussed the potential role of probiotics in depression through the tryptophan/kynurenine pathway.

Abstract
Antibiotic therapy has been the most popular line of treatment for the control of mastitis worldwide during the last few decades. Alternative and sustainable treatments must be developed because pathogens are becoming more resistant to antibiotics, leading to the development and spread of antimicrobial resistance (AMR). The aim of the current investigation was to isolate lactic acid bacteria (LAB) with probiotic potential that can inhibit mastitis-causing pathogens to prevent bovine mastitis. Milk samples were collected from Sahiwal cows, and a total of 150 bacteria were isolated, of which 76 were found to be catalase negative, and resistant to vancomycin. Twenty-three isolates displayed greater acid and bile tolerance, with > 90% survivability, and were molecularly characterized by 16S rRNA partial sequencing. The autoaggregation percentages for SML7 and SML41 were greater (p<0·05) 80.38±0.19% and 80.28±0.04%, respectively. SML10 (92.04±0.26 μmol/mL) had the highest (p<0.05) ferric-reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) activity, while SML20 (52.1±0.99%) had the highest 1,1 diphenyl 2 picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) scavenging activity. All the strains were nonhemolytic or nonmucinolytic. The highest antimicrobial activity was observed in several strains (SML41, SML63, SML76, and SML60) against common mastitis-causing pathogens, namely, E. coli ATCC25922, Staphylococcus aureus ATCC25923, Enterococcus faecalis NCDC114, Streptococcus agalactiae NCDC208, and Enterococcus faecium NCDC124. The coaggregation efficacy of SML20 with S. aureus was the highest (67.69±1.21%), while SML41 showed the highest (69.75±0.29%) coaggregation efficacy with E. faecalis NCDC114 and SML63 (68.078±0.26) with S. agalactiae NCDC208. Overall, seven distinct lactic acid bacterial clusters were identified by cluster analysis of the phylogenetic tree as follows: Enterococcus hirae (1), Limosilactobacillus reuteri (1), Pediococcus acidilactici (4), Weissella confusa (11), Lactobacillus helveticus (3), Limosilactobacillus balticus (2), and Lacticaseibacillus rhamnosus (1). The Lactobacillus helveticus SML41, Lactobacillus helveticus SML60, Weissella confusa SML61, Lacticaseibacillus rhamnosus SML63, Weissella confusa SML64, and Pediococcus acidilactici SML76 isolates were found to possess the most desirable characteristics of potential probiotics based on principal component analysis (PCA). Therefore, the strains chosen in the current investigation demonstrated techno-functional characteristics that rendered them appropriate for probiotic use to treat and prevent intramammary infections in dairy cattle in a sustainable manner.

Abstract
The present research was aimed to isolate potential probiotic organisms from dairy products locally made in and around the Saurashtra region of Gujarat. A total of 224 colonies were screened for primary attributes. Based on the results, 70 isolates were carried further for secondary screening. Out of these, only 23 isolates were further tested for antioxidant activities. Only 6 potential probiotic strains were found to have all the probiotic attributes. These isolates demonstrated survivability up to 4 h at pH ≤ 3, bile concentration ≥ 1.5%, autoaggregation ability ≥ 81.08%, and cell surface hydrophobicity more than 70% while using toluene as the test hydrocarbon. The promising six isolates were subjected to 16S rRNA sequencing for species-level identification and found to be belonging to the genus Bacillus, Enterococcus, and Lactobacillus. The isolates demonstrated higher antioxidant potential as determined by ABTS, DPPH, and FRAP methods. For all three methods, L. rhamnosus was taken as a positive control that showed 85.61%, 39.56%, and 78.18% reduction of free radicals as determined by the ABTS, DPPH, and FRAP methods, respectively. Compared to this, Limosilactobacillus fermentum BAB 7912 demonstrated the highest reduction of ABTS radicals (83.45%), while Bacillus subtilis BAB 7918 reduced 29.95% DPPH free radicals and Bacillus spizizenii BAB 7915 reduced 80.93% ferric ions as determined by the FRAP method. Isolates were subjected to 16S rRNA sequencing for species-level identification and found to be belonging to genus Bacillus, Enterococcus, and Lactobacillus.

Abstract
Major depressive disorder (MDD) represents a complex and challenging mental health condition with multifaceted etiology. Recent research exploring the gut-brain axis has shed light on the potential influence of gut microbiota on mental health, offering novel avenues for therapeutic intervention. This paper reviews current evidence on the role of prebiotics and probiotics in the context of MDD treatment. Clinical studies assessing the effects of prebiotic and probiotic interventions have demonstrated promising results, showcasing improvements in depression symptoms and metabolic parameters in certain populations. Notably, prebiotics and probiotics have shown the capacity to modulate inflammatory markers, cortisol levels, and neurotransmitter pathways linked to MDD. However, existing research presents varied outcomes, underscoring the need for further investigation into specific microbial strains, dosage optimization, and long-term effects. Future research should aim at refining personalized interventions, elucidating mechanisms of action, and establishing standardized protocols to integrate these interventions into clinical practice. While prebiotics and probiotics offer potential adjunctive therapies for MDD, continued interdisciplinary efforts are vital to harnessing their full therapeutic potential and reshaping the landscape of depression treatment paradigms.

Abstract
Extra-articular manifestations (EAM), which are associated with rheumatoid arthritis (RA), affect the quality of life of patients and are one of the critical causes of early mortality. This study was aimed at investigating whether Bacillus subtilis NMCC-path-14 (1 × 108 CFU/animal/day) could serve as a valuable therapeutic agent in managing EAM using complete Freund's adjuvant (CFA) induced arthritis during acute and sub-acute phases. Arthritis was induced using intra-dermal administration of CFA in the right hind paw of mice on day 1. Dexamethasone (Dexa) (5 mg/kg/day/animal) was used as a standard treatment. Animals in Dexa and Bacillus subtilis concurrent treatment (BS-CT) received treatments on day 1. The Bacillus subtilis pre-treatment (BS-PT) group received a probiotic dose 7 days before arthritis induction. Parameters like body weight, relative organ weight, colon length, hematology, serum biochemistry, antioxidant capacity, and histopathology of liver, kidney, spleen, colon, stress-related behavioral changes, and cortisol levels were evaluated on days 7 (acute) and 14 (sub-acute). Dexa failed to manage the EAM in arthritic mice and instead exacerbated them. On the other hand, B. subtilis NMCC-path-14 significantly declined EAM with no notable side effects, highlighting its safety and effectiveness. The current data show that B. subtilis NMCC-path-14 may be an alternative option for arthritis treatment that can reduce systemic symptoms associated with arthritis. More studies are required to comprehend the underlying mechanisms of mitigating the EAM by B. subtilis NMCC-path-14.

Abstract
Aging often accompanies cognitive and mood disturbances. Emerging evidence indicates that specific probiotics mitigate cognitive and mood dysfunctions. Strains within Lactococcus, a subgroup of probiotics, including Lactococcus lactis and Lactococcus cremoris are shown beneficial effects on brain functions via the gut microbiota-brain axis (GBA). Our previous study identified two Lactococcus strains (L. lactis WHH2078 and L. cremoris WHH2080) with the ability to promote the secretion of gut 5-hydroxytryptophan (5-HTP), the precursor of the GBA mediator 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT). In this study, the modulatory effects of WHH2078 and WHH2080 on cognitive and mood alternations were investigated in aged mice. Oral administration of WHH2078 and WHH2080 (1 × 109 CFU/mL/day) in aged mice (12-month-old) for 12 weeks significantly improved cognitive and depressive-and anxiety-like behaviors. The neuronal loss, the 5-HT metabolism dysfunction, and the neuroinflammation in the hippocampus of aged mice were restored by WHH2078 and WHH2080. the disturbances in the serum tryptophan metabolism in aged mice were unveiled by metabolomics, notably with decreased levels of 5-HT and 5-HTP, and increased levels of kynurenine, 3-hydroxykynurenine, and indolelactic acid, which were reversed by WHH2078 and WHH2080. Regarding the gut microbial community, WHH2078 and WHH2080 restored the increased abundance of Firmicutes, Desulfobacterota, and Deferribacterota and the decreased abundance of Bacteroidota and Actinobacteriota in aged mice. The beneficial effects of the two strains were linked to the modulation of 5-HT metabolism and gut microbiota. Our findings point to the potential role of Lactococcus strains with 5-HTP-promoting abilities as therapeutic approaches for age-related cognitive and mood disorders.

Abstract
Background Lactic acid bacteria (LAB) are utilized as a starter culture in the manufacturing of fermented dairy items, as a preservative for various food products, and as a probiotic. In our country, some research has been carried out, even if LAB plays a principal role in food preservation and improves the texture and taste of fermented foods, that is why we tried to evaluate their probiotic effect. The objective of this research was to determine the antibacterial activity of Lactococcus lactis (L. lactis) against Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) ATCC 29213, investigate their antioxidant activity, and characterize their sensitivity against 18 antibiotics. Methods A total of 23 LAB (L. lactis subsp. cremoris, L. lactis subsp. Lactis diacetylactis, L. lactis subsp. lactis) were isolated from cow's raw milk. The antibacterial activity was performed using two techniques, competition for nutrients and a technique utilizing components nature, using the disk diffusion method. The sensitivity of the studied LAB to different antibiotics was tested on Man rogosa sharp (MRS) agar using commercial antibiotic disks. All strains of LAB were examined for their antioxidant activity. The antioxidant activity of L. lactis was tested by 2,2-diphenyl-1 picrylhydrazyl (DPPH). Results The results showed that the MRS medium was more adapted than Muller Hinton Agar (MHA) to investigate the antibacterial activity of L. lactis against S. aureus ATCC 29213. Also, L. lactis exhibited a notable degree of antibacterial activity against S. aureus ATCC 29213. L. Lactis subsp. Lactis displayed higher antibacterial activities, followed by L. lactis ssp. lactis biovar. diacetylactis, and lastly, L. lactis ssp. cremoris against S. aureus ATCC 29213. Lc 26 among all strains of L. lactis showed a high potential antibacterial activity reaching 40 ± 3 mm against S. aureus ATCC 29213. All strains of L. lactis showed a slightly moderate antioxidant activity (10.56 ± 1.28%-26.29 ± 0.05 %). The results of the antibiotic resistance test indicate that all strains of L. lactis were resistant to cefotaxime, sulfamethoxazole-trimethoprim, and streptomycin and were sensitive to Ampicillin, Amoxicillin, Penicillin G, Teicoplanin, Vancomycin, Gentamicin 500, Tetracycline, and Chloramphenicol. These test results indicate that this strain falls within the criteria of not posing any harmful effects on human health. The important antibacterial properties recorded for all L. Lactis strains were derived from the production of antibacterial active metabolites, such as protein, diacetyl, hydrogen peroxide, and lactic acid, together with the fight for nutrients. Conclusion This study suggests that the strains of L. lactis could be added as an antibacterial agent against S. aureus ATCC 29213 and can provide an important nutritional property for their antioxidant potential.

Abstract
This review aims to argue how using probiotics can improve anxiety and depressive behaviour without adverse effects, also exploring the impact of postbiotics on it. Specifically, probiotics have drawn more attention as effective alternative treatments, considering the rising cost of antidepressant and anti-anxiety drugs and the high risk of side effects. Depression and anxiety disorders are among the most common mental illnesses in the world's population, characterised by low mood, poor general interest, and cognitive or motor dysfunction. Thus, this study analysed published literature on anxiety, depression, and probiotic supplementation from PubMed and Scopus, focusing on the last twenty years. This study focused on the effect of probiotics on mental health as they have drawn more attention because of their extensive clinical applications and positive impact on various diseases. Numerous studies have demonstrated how the gut microbiota might be critical for mood regulation and how probiotics can affect host health by regulating the gut-brain axis. By comparing the different works analysed, it was possible to identify a strategy by which they are selected and employed and, at the same time, to assess how the effect of probiotics can be optimised using postbiotics, an innovation to improve mental well-being in humans.

Abstract
For sustainable development, better performance, and less gas pollution during rumen fermentation, there is a need to find a green and safe feed additive for ruminants. Cysteamine (CS) is a biological compound naturally produced in mammalian cells. It is widely used as a growth promoter in ruminants because of its ability to control hormone secretions. It mainly controls the circulating concentration of somatostatin and enhances growth hormone production, leading to improved growth performance. CS modulates the rumen fermentation process in a way beneficial for the animals and environment, leading to less methane production and nutrients loss. Another beneficial effect of using CS is that it improves the availability of nutrients to the animals and enhances their absorption. CS also works as an antioxidant and protects the cells from oxidative damage. In addition, CS has no adverse effects on bacterial and fungal alpha diversity in ruminants. Dietary supplementation of CS enhances the population of beneficial microorganisms. Still, no data is available on the use of CS on reproductive performance in ruminants, so there is a need to evaluate the effects of using CS in breeding animals for an extended period. In this review, the action mode of CS was updated according to recently published data to highlight the beneficial effects of using CS in ruminants.

Abstract
Nowadays, the bacteriocin industries have seen significant growth, supplanting chemical preservatives in its ability to improve the shelf-life and safety of food. The increasing customer desire to use natural preservatives has fueled advancing bacteriocin research. The objective of this study was to identify lactic acid bacteria (LAB) that produce bacteriocin-like inhibitory substance (BLIS) and have strong anti-listerial activity. We have identified and analyzed a LAB obtained from chhurpi samples, a popular milk-derived product in the Himalayan regions of India and Nepal. The strain was studied and identified based on its morphological, biochemical, and physiological characteristics. Furthermore, the molecular 16s-rDNA analysis suggests that the strain was Lactococcus sp. RGUAM1 (98.2% similar to Lactococcus lactis subsp. hordniae NBRC 100931T). The isolated strain can produce a potent BLIS, which has shown efficacy against three gram-positive bacteria responsible for food spoilage, such as Listeria monocytogenes (MTCC 657), Staphylococcus aureus subsp. aureus (MTCC 87), Lactobacillus plantarum (MTCC 1407), Lactobacillus paraplantarum (MTCC 12904). The scanning electron microscope (SEM) image illustrates that the crude cell-free supernatant (CFS) disrupts the cell envelope, leading to the release of cellular contents and the clustering of cells. In addition, this BLIS can easily withstand a wide range of pH (2-12), temperature (up to 100 °C for 15 min), bile salt (0.3% W/V), salinity (4% W/V), and enzyme activity of 1600 AU/ml against Listeria monocytogenes. Our research offers a robust framework and valuable insights into bio-preservation and its potential applications in diverse food products.

Abstract
This study aimed to isolate and characterize probiotic Lactobacilli from human faecal samples of Jammu region of India and evaluation of their antioxidative properties. A total of 29 Lactobacillus strains were isolated and tested for their ability to withstand different pH levels, high concentrations of bile salt and lysozyme along with their adhesion ability to different hydrocarbons and auto-aggregation. Selected probiotic Lactobacillus isolates were further examined for their antioxidant potential using ABTS, DPPH methods, and the ability to scavenge superoxide and hydroxyl radicals. The results showed that Lactobacillus LpJ1 (7.93 ± 0.23) and LpJ5 (7.93 ± 0.59) had the highest cell viability at a pH of 2.5, while Lactobacillus LpJ16 (7.91 ± 0.48) had the highest resistance to bile salts. Many of the isolates also demonstrated good tolerance to lysozyme. The adhesion abilities of these isolates were characterized by cell surface hydrophobicity and auto aggregation which ranged between 50.32% to 77.8% and 51.02% to 78.95% respectively. In addition, Lactobacillus LpJ5 and LpJ8 showed excellent antioxidant activity. Based on these findings, the selected probiotic strains could be potential candidates for use in functional food to reduce oxidative stress. Graphical abstract

Abstract
This literature review aimed to collect investigations on the in vivo evidence for bacteria associated with fermented dairy foods to behave as probiotics with beneficial effects in the prevention and treatment of various diseases. All main bacterial groups commonly present in high numbers in fermented milks or cheeses were taken into account, namely starter lactic acid bacteria (SLAB) Lactobacillus delbrueckii subsp. bulgaricus and lactis, L. helveticus, Lactococcus lactis, Streptococcus thermophilus, non-starter LAB (NSLAB) Lacticaseibacillus spp., Lactiplantibacillus plantarum, dairy propionibacteria, and other less frequently encountered species. Only studies regarding strains of proven dairy origin were considered. Studies in animal models and clinical studies showed that dairy bacteria ameliorate symptoms of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), mucositis, metabolic syndrome, aging and oxidative stress, cancer, bone diseases, atopic dermatitis, allergies, infections and damage caused by pollutants, mild stress, and depression. Immunomodulation and changes in the intestinal microbiota were the mechanisms most often involved in the observed effects. The results of the studies considered indicated that milk and dairy products are a rich source of beneficial bacteria that should be further exploited to the advantage of human and animal health.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Probiotics are live microorganisms that provide beneficial effects on the host's health when exploited in adequate amounts. This study aimed at carrying out whole-genome sequence analysis and in vitro potential probiotic characteristics of Lactococcus lactis subsp. lactis strain Lac3 isolated from the spontaneously fermented buffalo milk named Dadih. RESULTS The results from de novo assembly indicated that the assembled genome consisted of 55 contigs with a genome size of 2,441,808 bp ~ (2.44 Mb), and GC % content of 34.85%. The evolution history result showed that the strain Lac3 was closely related to Lactococcus lactis species deposited in NCBI with a sequence similarity ≥ 99.93%. L. lactis subsp. lactis Lac3 was non-pathogenic with a probability of 0.21 out of 1 and had a pathogenicity score of zero (0), and neither harbored virulence factors nor acquired antibiotic resistance phenotypes. L. lactis subsp. lactis Lac3 exhibited the potential probiotic characteristics to tolerate acid at pH (2.0 and 5.0), salinity (1-5% NaCl), bile salt of (0.3-1.0%) and had auto-aggregation capacity increased from 6.0 to 13.1%. CONCLUSION This study described a novel strain of Lactococcus lactis subsp. lactis called Lac3, which exhibits probiotic properties that could be beneficial in the development of probiotics.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The microbiota-gut-brain axis plays an important role in the development of depression. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of 5-HT on cognitive function, learning and memory induced by chronic unforeseeable mild stress stimulation (CUMS) in female mice. CUMS mice and TPH2 KO mice were used in the study. Lactococcus lactis E001-B-8 fungus powder was orally administered to mice with CUMS. METHODS We used the open field test, Morris water maze, tail suspension test and sucrose preference test to examine learning-related behaviours. In addition, AB-PAS staining, immunofluorescence, ELISA, qPCR, Western blotting and microbial sequencing were employed to address our hypotheses. RESULTS The effect of CUMS was more obvious in female mice than in male mice. Compared with female CUMS mice, extracellular serotonin levels in TPH2 KO CUMS mice were significantly reduced, and cognitive dysfunction was aggravated. Increased hippocampal autophagy levels, decreased neurotransmitter levels, reduced oxidative stress damage, increased neuroinflammatory responses and disrupted gut flora were observed. Moreover, L. lactis E001-B-8 significantly improved the cognitive behaviour of mice. CONCLUSIONS These results strongly suggest that L. lactis E001-B-8 but not FLX can alleviate rodent depressive and anxiety-like behaviours in response to CUMS, which is associated with the improvement of 5-HT metabolism and modulation of the gut microbiome composition.

Abstract
Dental fluorosis (DF) is a widely prevalent disease caused by excessive fluoride with limited awareness of its underlying pathogenesis. Here, a pilot population study was conducted to explore the pathogenesis of DF from the perspective of intestinal microbiome changes, and verified it in animal experiments combining intestinal microbiome and metabolomics. A total of 23 children were recruited in 2017 in China and divided into DF (n = 9) and control (n = 14) groups (DFG and CG, respectively). The SD rat model was established by drinking water containing sodium fluoride (NaF). Gut microbiome profiles of children and rats were analyzed by16S rDNA V3-V4 sequencing, and the intestinal metabolomics analysis of rats was performed by LC-MS methods. The 16 S rDNA sequencing revealed that the gut microbiome composition was significantly perturbed in children in DFG compared to that in CG. Acidobacteria and Thermi were specifically observed in DFG and CG, respectively. Besides, 15 fecal microbiotas were significantly altered at the genus level in DFG. Furthermore, only the expression of annotated genes for pentose and glucuronate interconversion pathway was significant lower in DFG than that in CG (P = 0.04). Notably, in NaF-treated rats, we also observed the changes of some key components of pentose and glucuronate interconversion pathway at the level of microorganisms and metabolites. Our findings suggested that the occurrence of DF is closely related to the alteration of intestinal microorganisms and metabolites annotated in the pentose and glucuronate interconversion pathway.

Abstract
Fermented foods are gaining popularity due to health-promoting properties with high levels of nutrients, phytochemicals, bioactive compounds, and probiotic microorganisms. Due to its unique fermentation process, Lactococcus lactis plays a key role in the food business, notably in the manufacturing of dairy products. The superior biological activities of L. lactis in these functional foods include anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory capabilities. L. lactis boosted growth performance, controlled amino acid profiles, intestinal immunology, and microbiota. Besides that, the administration of L. lactis increased the rate of infection clearance. Innate and acquired immune responses would be upregulated in both local and systemic compartments, resulting in these consequences. L. lactis is often employed in the food sector and is currently being exploited as a delivery vehicle for biological research. These bacteria are being eyed as potential candidates for biotechnological applications. With this in mind, we reviewed the immunomodulatory effects of different L. lactis strains.

Abstract
Introduction It is well known that the intestinal bacteria substantially affect physiological processes in many body organs. Especially, through a bidirectional communication called as gut-microbiota-brain axis, the gut microbiota deeply influences development and function of the nervous system. Hippocampus, as a part of medial temporal lobe, is known to be involved in cognition, emotion, and anxiety. Growing evidence indicates that the hippocampus is a target of the gut microbiota. We used a broad search linking the hippocampus with the gut microbiota and probiotics. Methods All experimental studies and clinical trials published until end of 2021 were reviewed. Influence of the gut microbiota on the behavioral, electrophysiological, biochemical and histological aspects of the hippocampus were evaluated in this review. Results The effect of disrupted gut microbiota and probiotic supplements on the microbiota-hippocampus link is also considered. Studies show that a healthy gut microbiota is necessary for normal hippocampus dependent learning and memory and synaptic plasticity. The known current mechanisms are production and modulation of neurotrophins, neurotransmitters and receptors, regulation of intracellular molecular processes, normalizing the inflammatory/anti-inflammatory and oxidative/antioxidant factors, and histological stability of the hippocampus. Activity of the hippocampal neuronal circuits as well as behavioral functions of the hippocampus positively respond to different mixtures of probiotic bacteria. Discussion Growing evidence from animal researches indicate a close association between the hippocampus with the gut microbiota and probiotic bacteria as well. However, human studies and clinical trials verifying such a link are scant. Since the most of papers on this topic have been published over the past 3 years, intensive future research awaits.

Abstract
This study aimed to assess the potential antidepressant- and anxiolytic-like effects of huauzontle fermented by Lactiplantibacillus plantarum Lp22. The possible association between oxidative stress/inflammation biomarkers and unconditional behavioural tests was also evaluated. Red light-induced stress mice C57Bl/6 (n = 5 per group) received orally either fermented or unfermented huauzontle, diazepam or fluoxetine. A non-stressed group which received saline solution was also included. Then, anxiety-related and depression-related behaviour tests were performed; after that, blood and tissues samples were collected to determine oxidative stress/inflammation biomarkers. The mice receiving both fermented and unfermented huauzontle spent more time (94 s) in open arms in the elevated plus maze test p < 0.05; besides, travelled longer distance (p < 0.05) and increased by more than 50% the exploration time for the open field, as well as the time spent in the illuminated zone (197 s) in the light/dark test. Furthermore, reduced immobility time in the tail suspension and forced swim tests (23.1 and 15.85, respectively), and anhedonia was no detected in the sucrose preference test. The oxidative stress index was lower in the liver of fermented huauzontle-treated mice, while enhanced levels of IL-10, MCP-1 and BDNF in plasma, and lipoxygenase (LOX) activity in the hippocampus were found. Finally, PCA revealed a positive correlation among LOX and BDNF and parameters determined in the anxiety tests, as between catalase activity and immobility time in the depression test. These findings indicate the novel potential therapeutic applications of fermented huauzontle on depression and anxiety-like behaviours possibly mediated by antioxidant and anti-inflammatory mechanisms.

Abstract
Cysteamine (CS), as a feed supplement, can increase the level of growth hormone (GH) in the blood, promote animal growth. However, little attention has been paid to the effects of CS on the rumen microbiome and metabolic profile in cashmere goats. This study aimed to assess the effects of rumen microbiota, metabolites, and plasma antioxidative capacity induced by CS supplementation in cashmere goats. We selected 30 Inner Mongolia white cashmere goat ewes (aged 18 months), and randomly separate the goats into three groups (n = 10 per group) to experiment for 40 days. Oral 0 (control group, CON), 60 (low CS, LCS), or 120 mg/kg BW-1 (high CS, HCS) coated CS hydrochloride every day. Using 16S and internal transcribed spacer (ITS) rRNA gene amplicon sequencing, we identified 12 bacterial and 3 fungal genera with significant changes among the groups, respectively. We found a significant increase in rumen NH3-N and total volatile fatty acid (TVFA) concentrations in the LCS and HCS groups compared with the CON. With untargeted LC-MS/MS metabolomics, we screened 59 rumen differential metabolites. Among the screened metabolites, many unsaturated and saturated fatty acids increased and decreased with CS treatment, respectively. CS supplementation increased the levels of plasma total antioxidant capacity (T-AOC), glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px), superoxide dismutase (SOD), GH, and insulin-like growth factor-1(IGF-1). Spearman correlation analysis revealed that the abundance of U29-B03, Lactococcus, and Brochothrix were positively associated with the levels of δ2-THA, TVFA and antioxidant capacity. In conclusion, CS significantly affected rumen microbiota and fermentation parameters, and ultimately inhibited the biohydrogenation of rumen metabolites, enhanced plasma antioxidant capacity, and regulated some hormones of the GH-IGF-1 axis. This study provides an overall view into the CS application as a strategy to improve health production in cashmere goats.

Abstract
Antioxidants are often associated with a variety of anti-aging compounds that can ensure human and animal health longevity. Foods and diet supplements from animals and plants are the common exogenous sources of antioxidants. However, microbial-based products, including probiotics and their derivatives, have been recognized for their antioxidant properties through numerous studies and clinical trials. While the number of publications on probiotic antioxidant capacities and action mechanisms is expanding, that of synbiotics combining probiotics with prebiotics is still emerging. Here, the antioxidant metabolites and properties of synbiotics, their modes of action, and their different effects on human and animal health are reviewed and discussed. Synbiotics can generate almost unlimited possibilities of antioxidant compounds, which may have superior performance compared to those of their components through additive or complementary effects, and especially by synergistic actions. Either combined with antioxidant prebiotics or not, probiotics can convert these substrates to generate antioxidant compounds with superior activities. Such synbiotic-based new routes for supplying natural antioxidants appear relevant and promising in human and animal health prevention and treatment. A better understanding of various component interactions within synbiotics is key to generating a higher quality, quantity, and bioavailability of antioxidants from these biotic sources.

Abstract
Acute kidney injury (AKI) describes a sudden loss of kidney function and is associated with a high mortality. Pediococcus acidilactici is a potent producer of bacteriocin and inhibits the growth of pathogens during fermentation and food storage; it has been used in the food industry for many years. In this study, the potential of P. acidilactici GKA4 (GKA4) to ameliorate AKI was investigated using a cisplatin-induced animal model. First, mice were given oral GKA4 for ten days and intraperitoneally injected with cisplatin on the seventh day to create an AKI mode. GKA4 attenuated renal histopathological alterations, serum biomarkers, the levels of inflammatory mediators, and lipid oxidation in cisplatin-induced nephrotoxicity. Moreover, GKA4 significantly decreased the expression of inflammation-related proteins and mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) in kidney tissues. Eventually, GKA4 also increased the levels of related antioxidant enzymes and pathways. Consistently, sirtuin 1 (SIRT1) upregulated the level of autophagy-related proteins (LC3B, p62, and Beclin1). Further studies are needed to check our results and advance our knowledge of the mechanism whereby PI3K inhibition (wortmannin) reverses the effect of GKA4 on cisplatin-treated AKI. Taken together, GKA4 provides a therapeutic target with promising clinical potential after cisplatin treatment by reducing oxidative stress and inflammation via the MAPK, AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK)/SIRT1/nuclear factor kappa B (NF-κB), and phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase (PI3K)/protein kinase B (AKT) axes.

Abstract
Clinical evidence suggests that neuroinflammation, activation of the immune system, and the composition of the intestinal microbiota are involved in the pathology of depression. This study evaluated the effectiveness of a probiotic intervention using Lactococcus lactis subsp. cremoris LL95 in ameliorating mood disorders in a lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced depression-like mouse model. C57BL/6 mice were randomly divided into four groups and treated with 5 mg/kg LPS via intraperitoneal injection to induce depression-like symptoms, followed by oral administration of LL95 for one week (1 × 109 CFU/mouse). The animals were then subjected to a series of behavioral assessments, including open field, sucrose preference, and forced swimming tests. In addition, we evaluated the levels of reactive oxygen species, tumor necrosis factor-α, and interleukin-1β in the hippocampal tissues of these animals, and also determined their fecal lactic acid bacteria (LAB) content. LL95 intervention improved LPS-induced depression-like behaviors in mice, including decreased sucrose preference and increased immobility time in the forced swim test. LL95 treatment reversed the LPS-induced increase in hippocampal levels of reactive oxygen species and tumor necrosis factor-α, and of interleukin-1β to a lesser extent. Furthermore, LL95 intervention increased the fecal LAB content in these animals, suggesting changes in the gut microbiota. These findings suggest that LL95 exerts antidepressant-like effects in LPS-induced depression, which may be attributed to modulation of the oxidative status and pro-inflammatory cytokine expression in the hippocampus and alteration in the LAB content of the gut microbiota.

Abstract
Gut microbiota have been shown to be useful in treating gastrointestinal diseases, cancer, obesity, infections, and, more recently, neuropsychiatric conditions such as degenerative diseases and depression. There has also been recent expansion in testing probiotics and prebiotics on anxiety-like behaviors in animals. Current results indicate that probiotic substances of the Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium type are effective in reducing anxiety-like behaviors in mice or rats evaluated in the elevated plus-maze, the open-field, the light-dark box, and conditioned defensive burying. Probiotics are also effective in reducing serum or plasma corticosterone levels after acute stress. It is hypothesized that probiotics cause anxiolytic-like effects via vagal influences on caudal solitary nucleus, periaqueductal gray, central nucleus of the amygdala, and bed nucleus of the stria terminalis. Further experimentation is needed to trace the neurochemical anatomy underlying anxiolytic-like behaviors of gut microbiata exerting effects via vagal or nonvagal pathways.

Emerging evidence suggests that certain probiotics that modulate 5-HT metabolism confer beneficial effects on depression. In this study, in vitro enterochromaffin RIN14B cells were used for screening potential antidepressant probiotic Lactococcus lactis strains. The L. lactis strain WHH2078 increased to high levels the 5-HT precursor 5-hydroxytryptophan (5-HTP) and the expression of tryptophan hydroxylase 1 (Tph1), which converts tryptophan to 5-HTP in RIN14B cells. The oral administration of WHH2078 (1 × 109 CFU mL-1) in mice with induced chronic unpredictable mild stress (CUMS) for 5 weeks significantly ameliorated depressive and anxiety-like behaviors in the tail suspension test, forced swim test, sucrose preference test, and open field test. Besides, WHH2078 significantly reduced the serum corticosterone level and restored the central levels of 5-HT, 5-HTP, and brain-derived neurotrophic factor in CUMS-induced mice. Moreover, WHH2078 also reversed the 5-HTP levels in the serum and colon, accompanied by an upregulation in colonic Tph1 gene expression. Using 16S rRNA high-throughput sequencing of feces, WHH2078 was shown to improve the CUMS-induced gut microbial dysbiosis, through restoring alpha diversity and the abundances of Firmicutes and Bacteroidetes. In summary, these results indicate that WHH2078 can alleviate rodent depressive and anxiety-like behaviors in response to CUMS, which is associated with the improvement of 5-HT metabolism and modulation of the gut microbiome composition. Therefore, supplementation of the L. lactis strain WHH2078 with antidepressant properties may serve as a promising therapeutic strategy for chronic stress-induced depression.

Abstract
Nanoencapsulation is an attractive technique used for incorporating essential oils in foods. Thus, our main goal was to formulate a novel nanoemulsion (NE) with nanoscale droplet size and lowest interfacial tension in the oil–water interface, contributing positively to the stability and the enhancement of essential oil potential. Thereby, response surface methodology (RSM), with mixture design was used to optimize the composition of the NE lipid phase. The essential oil combinations were encapsulated through high-pressure homogenization (HPH) with the binary emulsifier system (Tween 80: Gum Arabic). Then, the electrophoretic and physical properties were evaluated. We also conducted a follow-up stability and antimicrobial study that examined the stabilization mechanism of optimal NE. Thereafter, the effect of nanoencapsulation on the essential oil composition was assessed. The RSM results were best fitted into polynomial models with regression coefficient values of more than 0.95. The optimal NE showed a nanometer-sized droplet (270 nm) and lower interfacial tension (~11 mN/m), favoring negative ζ-potential (−15 mV), showing good stability under different conditions—it synergistically enhances the antimicrobial potential. GC-MS analysis showed that the use of HPH affected the active compounds, consistent with the differences in linalool and 2-Caren-10-al content. Hence, the novel nanometric delivery system contributes to food industry fortification.

Abstract
The multiple health benefits attributed to the bioactive compound γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) have prompted the food industry to investigate the development of functional GABA-rich foods via the use of GABA-producing microorganisms. This study reports the isolation of six GABA-producing Lactococcus lactis strains from camel’s milk; this is the first time that such microorganisms have been isolated from milk. The sequencing and in silico analysis of their genomes, and the characterisation of their technological and safety properties, confirmed their potential as starters. Experimental cheeses made with all six strains (individually) accumulated GABA at concentrations of up to 457 mg/kg. These GABA-producing L. lactis strains could be used as starter cultures for the manufacture of functional GABA-enriched cheeses that provide health benefits to consumers.

Abstract
Yarrowia lipolytica has been widely used in food industry but scarcely explored as probiotics. Thus, the aims of this study were to characterize in vitro the probiotic potential, antioxidant capacity, and antimicrobial activity of the marine yeast Y. lipolytica D-1 and N-6 strains. Dietary administration effect was evaluated in vivo on immunological parameters in serum, skin-mucus, intestine, and fish leukocytes upon challenge with Vibrio parahaemolyticus. The results showed that Y. lipolytica D-1 and N-6 strains grew with NaCl or bile salts but were sensitive to low pH. Each of the Y. lipolytica strains had a distinctive antioxidant capacity and fatty acid profile, but their antimicrobial activity was similar against fish bacterial pathogens. Fish (Lutjanus peru) supplemented with Y. lipolytica strains showed normal intestinal morphology, high IgM levels, and antioxidant enzyme activities. Immune-related genes were modulated in fish fed Y. lipolytica in a strain-dependent fashion. In addition, leucocytes from fish fed Y. lipolytica challenged with V. parahaemolyticus increased innate immune and antioxidant parameters compared with the control groups. In conclusion, the marine yeast Y. lipolytica D-1 and N-6 strains may be potential probiotics for fish by exerting free-radical scavenging, antimicrobial activity, and improved immune-protective responses against V. parahaemolyticus infection.

Abstract
This study aimed to screen a potential anti-diarrheal probiotic for pigs to meet the growing demand for antibiotic alternatives in livestock. Six intestinal pathogens, Escherichia coli (O157: H7) ATCC 43888, Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 6538, Listeria monocytogenes ATCC 19115, Salmonella Typhimurium ATCC 14028, Shigella boydii ATCC 9207, and Staphylococcus haemolyticus ZSY2 were employed as indicator bacteria. Our result showed that Lactobacillus animalis pZL8a isolated from pig feces had extensive and higher antibacterial activity against indicator pathogens among 9 tested strains. In addition, valuable attributes of pZL8a such as great tolerance of low pH (3.0) and bile salts (0.3%), high-level adhesion to Caco-2 cells, and similar susceptibility to the reference strain Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG (LGG) were observed. Compared with control, pZL8a supplement significantly improved the level of immunoglobulin G (IgG), immunoglobulin M (IgM), and interleukin-2 (IL-2) in mouse serum. Therefore, L. animalis pZL8a was proposed as a potential probiotic for further research and hope to reduce or replace the application of antibiotics in animal production.

Abstract
Background and Purpose The mechanism underlying the pathology of neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorders (NMOSD) remains unclear even though antibodies to the water channel protein aquaporin-4 (AQP4) on astrocytes play important roles. Our previous study showed that dysbiosis occurred in the fecal microbiota of NMOSD patients. In this study, we further investigated whether the intestinal barrier and mucosal flora balance are also interrupted in NMOSD patients. Methods Sigmoid mucosal biopsies were collected by endoscopy from six patients with NMOSD and compared with samples from five healthy control (HC) individuals. These samples were processed for electron microscopy and immunohistochemistry to investigate changes in ultrastructure and in the number and size of intestinal inflammatory cells. Changes in mucosal flora were also analyzed by high-throughput 16S ribosomal RNA gene amplicon sequencing. Results The results from bacterial rRNA gene sequencing showed that bacterial diversity was decreased, but Streptococcus and Granulicatella were abundant in the colonic mucosa specimens of NMOSD patients compared to the HC individuals. The intercellular space between epithelia of the colonic mucosa was wider in NMOSD patients compared to the HC subjects (p < 0.01), and the expression of tight junction proteins [occludin, claudin-1 and zonula occludens-1 (ZO-1)] in NMOSD patients significantly decreased compared to that in the HC subjects. We also found numerous activated macrophages with many inclusions within the cytoplasm, mast cells with many particles in their cytoplasm, and enlarged plasma cells with rich developed rough endoplasmic reticulum in the lamina propria of the mucosa of the patients with NMOSD. Quantitative analysis showed that the percentages of small CD38+ and CD138+ cells (plasma cells) were lower, but the percentage of larger plasma cells was higher in NMOSD patients. Conclusion The present study demonstrated that the intestinal barrier was disrupted in the patients with NMOSD, accompanied by dysbiosis and inflammatory activation of the gut. The mucosal microbiota imbalance and inflammatory responses might allow pathogens to cross the damaged intestinal barrier and participate in pathological process in NMOSD. However, further study on the pathological mechanism of NMOSD underlying gut dysbiosis is warranted in the future.

Abstract
Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a progressive neurodegeneration characterized by neuron death ending in memory and cognitive decline. A major concern in AD research is the identification of new therapeutics that could prevent or delay the onset of the disorder, with current treatments being effective only in reducing symptoms. In this perspective, the use of engineered probiotics as therapeutic tools for the delivery of molecules to eukaryotic cells is finding application in several disorders. This work introduces a new strategy for AD treatment based on the use of a Lactobacilluslactis strain carrying one plasmid (pExu) that contains a eukaryotic expression cassette encoding the human p62 protein. 3xTg-AD mice orally administered with these bacteria for two months showed an increased expression of endogenous p62 in the brain, with a protein delivery mechanism involving both lymphatic vessels and neural terminations, and positive effects on the major AD hallmarks. Mice showed ameliorated memory, modulation of the ubiquitin-proteasome system and autophagy, reduced levels of amyloid peptides, and diminished neuronal oxidative and inflammatory processes. Globally, we demonstrate that these extremely safe, non-pathogenic and non-invasive bacteria used as delivery vehicles for the p62 protein represent an innovative and realistic therapeutic approach in AD.
