Internet Access and Nutritional Intake: Evidence from Rural China

Effects of acceptance and commitment therapy on fatigue interference in patients with advanced lung cancer and caregiving burden: protocol for a pilot randomised controlled trial

INTRODUCTION

Cancer-related fatigue is common in patients with advanced lung cancer. It not only interferes with patients' health-related quality of life, but also increases the caregiving burden of their caregivers. Acceptance and commitment therapy is emerging as a novel way to advocate accepting negative experiences and taking effective actions based on their own values to help patients commit meaningful actions in the course of cancer diseases. This trial aims to test the feasibility, acceptability and preliminary effects of acceptance and commitment therapy for fatigue interference in patients with advanced lung cancer and the caregiver burden.

METHOD AND ANALYSIS

A two-arm, assessor-blind pilot randomised controlled trial will be conducted. A total of 40 advanced lung cancer patient-caregiver dyads, who live in rural areas, will be recruited from a university-affiliated hospital in central China. The participants will be randomised to receive an online six-session acceptance and commitment therapy (i.e. involving metaphors, experiential exercises and mindfulness exercises facilitated by virtual reality technology) plus health education (intervention group, n=20) or health education (control group, n=20). Outcomes will be measured at baseline and 1 week postintervention. The primary outcomes are study feasibility (i.e. eligibility rate, recruitment rate, attrition rate and adherence rate), fatigue interference and caregiver burden. The secondary outcomes are health-related quality of life, meaning in life, psychological flexibility and mindful attention. Semistructured interviews will be conducted to explore the feasibility and experiences of the intervention in a subsample of 10 participants from the intervention group.

ETHICS AND DISSEMINATION

This study has been approved by the Joint Chinese University of Hong Kong-New Territories East Cluster Clinical Research Ethics Committee (CREC Ref. No. 2023.030) and the Medical Ethics Committee of Xiangya Hospital Central South University (No. 202305336). The findings will be disseminated in peer-reviewed journals and through local or international conference presentations.

Improving small-scale fishermen's subjective well-being in Indonesia: Does the internet use play a role?

The expansion of Internet access from urban to rural and coastal areas has changed all aspects of life, including lifestyles and work practices. Although several studies have shown that Internet use is essential in the fisheries sector, more information about the link between Internet usage and subjective well-being among small-scale fishermen is needed. This study is the first attempt to investigate the effect of Internet use on subjective well-being, particularly for small-scale fishers. This study used cross-sectional data from 220 respondents in East Java, Indonesia. Two-stage predictor substitution (2SPS) approaches were used to address the endogeneity issue in the estimation. The results revealed that fishing tools, access to credit, and region positively and significantly influenced small-scale fishers' determination to use the Internet. Savings and off-farm employment significantly and negatively affect adoption decisions. The main findings suggest that Internet use significantly increases small-scale fishermen's subjective well-being (proxied by happiness and life satisfaction). This suggests that improving the Internet infrastructure in coastal areas is needed to support economic activities in the fisheries sector and boost the well-being of small-scale fishers.

The effect of Internet use on nutritional intake and health outcomes: new evidence from rural China

Introduction

Internet use is changing nutritional intake and health outcomes, but the results are mixed, and less attention is given to the rural developing regions. Based on the China Health and Nutrition Survey (CHNS) data from 2004 to 2015, this study seeks to better understand the effect of Internet use on nutritional intake and health outcomes.

Methods

An instrumental variable estimation is used to address endogeneity problem.

Results

The results show that Internet use improves the dietary knowledge of rural residents, and thus has a positive impact on dietary quality, such as healthy eating index (HEI) and dietary diversity score (DDS). The higher the dietary quality, the better the nutritional health status. However, results also show that Internet use increases the risk of overweight, and obesity among rural Chinese residents. Because Internet use has significantly reduced the physical activity of rural residents in China. Interestingly, we also find that the Internet increases the risk of chronic diseases such as diabetes and high blood pressure, but there is a positive causal relationship between Internet use and the self-assessment score of health.

Discussion

Our findings suggest that there may be a serious lack of awareness of the health risks of chronic diseases among Chinese rural residents. Therefore, policymakers are suggested to consider the possible negative effects when promoting digital development.

Shrinking Working-Age Population and Food Demand: Evidence from Rural China

China is facing a rapidly aging population, and the proportion of the working-age population (WAP) is showing a decreasing trend. In this study, we use a two-stage budgeting quadratic almost-ideal demand system framework to estimate the distribution of food demand elasticity under different proportions of the WAP in rural China. The results show that the income elasticities of rural residents' demand for fruits and vegetables, animal products, oils and fats, and grains were 0.73, 0.65, 0.55, and 0.48, respectively. Additionally, the income elasticity of rural residents tended to increase as the household proportion of the WAP decreased. These results can provide a deeper understanding of the food consumption patterns of rural residents in China, and could be used in general or partial equilibrium models to forecast food supply and demand.

Impacts of COVID-19 on Nutritional Intake in Rural China: Panel Data Evidence

The COVID-19 pandemic introduced risks and challenges to global food and nutrition security. In this paper, we examine the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the nutritional intake of China’s rural residents using panel data and a fixed effects model. The data were collected in 2019 and 2020 and covered nine provinces and 2631 households in rural China. The results reveal that an increase of 100 confirmed cases in a county resulted in a 1.30% (p < 0.01), 1.42% (p < 0.01), 1.65% (p < 0.01), and 1.15% (p < 0.01) decrease in per capita intake of dietary energy, carbohydrates, fats, and proteins, respectively. Moreover, the COVID-19 pandemic had a significant and negative effect on dietary macronutrient intake in the low-income group at the 5% level of significance. Our study indicates that the potential insufficient nutrition situation, nutritional imbalance, and dietary imbalance of low-income rural residents should be addressed appropriately.

Does Internet Use Connect Us to a Healthy Diet? Evidence from Rural China

Dietary patterns in China have changed dramatically over the past few decades as the Internet has become rapidly available. Based on data from the China Health and Nutrition Survey (2006–2011), we use a two-way fixed effects model and an instrumental variable approach to determine the impact of Internet use on the dietary quality of rural residents. The results indicate that Internet use could significantly improve the dietary quality of Chinese rural residents, with an increase of about 10.4% in the China Food Pagoda Score (CFPS), mainly due to the increase in the dietary quality score for five food groups: fruits, meats, eggs, oil, and salt. We also found that Internet use significantly increased the consumption amounts of milk and its products (4 g), fruits (31 g), eggs (8 g), and vegetables (34 g), while also decreasing the intake of salts (2 g) and oil (6 g). A possible mechanism is that Internet use improves the dietary knowledge of rural residents, thus optimizing their dietary structure. Moreover, the effect of the Internet was greater among females and those who prepare food for a family. Rural residents without a college degree enjoyed more benefits. In summary, governments should further promote Internet penetration in rural areas for health purposes.
