Abstract
AIMS Chronic metabolic acidosis has been shown to be associated with cardiometabolic risk factors. The aim of the currently updated meta-analysis was to explore the association between Potential Renal Acid Load (PRAL) and Net Endogenous Acid Production (NEAP) with these risk factors. DATA SYNTHESIS Databases were searched up to May 2023. The mean of waist circumference (WC), body mass index (BMI), high- and low-density lipoprotein-cholesterol (HDL-C and LDL-C), triglyceride (TG), total cholesterol (TC), fasting blood sugar (FBS), and systolic- and diastolic blood pressure (SBP and DBP) in highest category vs lowest categories of NEAP and PRAL were recorded. Effect sizes were generated as weighted mean difference (WMD). Results showed that SBP, DBP, and WC had a significant difference in the upper and lower categories of PRAL (WMDSBP: 1.466 mmHg; 95% CI: 2.121, -0.811; P<0.001, WMDDBP: 0.710 mmHg; 95 % CI: 1.170, -0.249; P=0.003, and WMDWC: 0.819 cm; 95% CI: 1.446, -0.192; P=0.010) or NEAP (WMDSBP: 1.690 mmHg; 95% CI: 2.789, -0.591; P=0.003, WMDDBP: 1.076 mmHg, and WMDWC: 1.325 cm; 95% CI: 1.901, -0.749; P<0.001; 95% CI: 1.938, -0.214; P =0.014). The lowest versus highest categories of dietary PRAL were associated with lower BMI (WMDPRAL: 0.297 kg/m2; 95 % CI: 0.440, -0.154; P<0.001) and TG (WMD: 2.280 mg/dl; 95%CI: 3.828, -0.732; P=0.004; I2=99.4 %; P<0.001). CONCLUSIONS High DAL can be considered as an independent risk factor for increasing anthropometric indices, blood pressure, and TG. This study registered in the PROSPERO database (Registration No. CRD42023402985).

Abstract
Background Undiagnosed diabetes is a significant public health concern in India, considering the accumulative burden of diabetes and its long-term complications. We have estimated the prevalence and factors associated with undiagnosed diabetes in India. Methods We used data from the fifth round of the National Family Health Survey (NFHS-5, 2019-21) to estimate undiagnosed diabetes prevalence aged under 50 (15-49) years. A log-binomial model with survey-adjusted Poisson regression was used to estimate the prevalence risk ratio (PR) between undiagnosed diabetes and various factors. Multinomial logistic regression analysis was performed to examine the factors associated with diagnosed diabetes (vs. healthy) and undiagnosed diabetes (vs. healthy). All the analyses were survey-weighted and stratified by gender and reported with 95% confidence intervals. Results The prevalence of diabetes for individuals aged 15-49 years was found to be 4.90% (4.80 to 5.00%) from the NFHS-5. Among them, the proportion of individuals with undiagnosed diabetes was 24.82% (24.07 to 25.59%), with higher among males (28.82% (26.45 to 31.30%)) than females (24.22% (23.44 to 25.01%)). The overall prevalence of undiagnosed diabetes was 1.22% (1.18 to 1.26%), with a higher prevalence among males (1.60% (1.46 to 1.76%)) than females (1.17% (1.13 to 1.21%)). Individuals who are middle-aged (45-49), have a higher body mass index (BMI), and are in a lower wealth index group, or live in the southern regions of India are at a higher risk of being undiagnosed for diabetes. Conclusion One in every four having diabetes is undiagnosed. The study highlights the need for public health interventions to improve diabetes screening and access to health care, particularly among middle-aged individuals, and those with higher BMI, as well as addressing lifestyle and dietary factors. The findings also reveal disparities in diabetes burden among population subgroups in India, underscoring the need for targeted efforts.

Abstract
Obesity is a global health problem. In developing countries such as Zimbabwe, obesity is both an emerging health problem and a grey area, particularly among adolescents. This study assessed the prevalence of obesity and factors associated with low obesity awareness among adolescents. METHOD A cross-sectional survey was performed using an interviewer-administered questionnaire. The participants were 423 adolescents aged 14-19 years recruited from 10 schools in Harare using a stratified random sampling technique. Data were analyzed using SPSS software (version 23) and binary logistics regression was used to examine the factors associated with low obesity awareness. The level of significance was set at p < 0.05. RESULTS The median± IQR age was 16 (14-18) years, and overweight and obesity affected 15.8% of the participants with higher proportions among girls (73.1%, p = 0.002). Low obesity awareness was observed in 27.1% of the adolescents with a higher proportion among girls (67.0%, p = 0.001), 14-16-year-olds (51.3%, p = 0.317), and obese adolescents (56.7%, p = 0.001). Significant factors associated with low obesity awareness were household heads lacking formal education [OR = 9.41 (2.20-40.36), p = 0.003] and inadequate (poor) food habits [OR = 2.58 (1.33-5.01), p = 0.005]. CONCLUSIONS Our study showed that adolescents had different obesity awareness levels and diverse perceptions in terms of obesity causes, and a range of potential solutions. Obesity awareness and nutrition education should address adolescents' poor eating habits while taking cognizance of the different education levels of household heads.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES We sought to fill the research gap on the effects of statins on the risks of ischemic stroke and heart disease among individuals with human immunodeficiency virus infection, influenza, and severe acute respiratory syndrome associated-coronavirus (HIS) disorders. METHODS We enrolled a HIS cohort treated with statins (n = 4921) and a HIS cohort not treated with statins (n = 4921). The cumulative incidence of ischemic stroke and heart disease was analyzed using a time-dependent Cox proportional regression analysis. We analyzed the adjusted hazard ratio (aHR) and 95% confidence interval (CI) of ischemic stroke and heart disease for statins users relative to nonusers based on sex, age, comorbidities and medications. RESULTS The aHR (95% CI) was 0.38 (0.22-0.65) for ischemic stroke. The aHR (95% CI) of heart disease was 0.50 (0.46-0.55). The aHRs (95% CI) of statin users with low, medium, and high adherence (statin use covering <33%, 33%-66%, and >66%, respectively, of the study period) for the risks of ischemic stroke were 0.50 (0.27-0.92), 0.31 (0.10-1.01), and 0.16 (0.04-0.68) and for heart disease were 0.56 (0.51-0.61), 0.40 (0.33-0.48), and 0.44 (0.38-0.51), respectively, compared with statin nonusers. CONCLUSION Statin use was associated with lower aHRs for ischemic stroke and heart disease in those with HIS disorders with comorbidities.

Abstract
Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), a non-specific chronic idiopathic inflammatory condition of the digestive system, requires lifelong treatment in which drugs are the mainstay, along with surgery when necessary. In adjuvant therapies, the diet is considered to be an essential, controllable, and economical component. However, the majority of recent nutrition research has focused on the general effects of nutrients on IBD, with little attention given to the advantages and negative aspects of individual foods and dietary combinations. To cover these shortcomings, we surveyed the benefits and drawbacks of typical foods and their chemical compositions on intestinal pathophysiology by comparing nutrients existing in the foods in Eastern and Western countries. Moreover, for Eastern and Western patients with IBD, we innovatively propose a 3-step dietary recommendation based on modified customary eating habits, including lowering the triggering foods, modifying dietary advice to control disease progression, and improving surgery prognosis.
