Abstract
Chrononutrition, an emerging body of evidence on the relationship between biological rhythms and metabolism, has been established to be associated with glycemic responses. However, the available evidence is inconsistent, due to protocol variations. Therefore, this review aims to summarize the findings on chrononutrition characteristics and their association with glycemic responses among adults. Systematic searches were conducted across six databases (PubMed, EBSCO Host, ProQuest Central, MEDLINE & Ovid, Scopus and Web of Science) to identify all relevant studies published from January 2012. Two reviewers independently screened the abstracts and full-text articles based on the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Details about population characteristics, study methods and key findings were extracted following the PRISMA-ScR guideline. The quality of selected studies was evaluated using the mixed methods appraisal tool. The searchers identified 49 studies eligible for analysis. The results showed that meal timing, particularly night-time eating and snacking were associated with glycemic responses. Regarding meal regularity, skipping breakfast may affect glycemic responses, but no clear conclusion was drawn about its effect on insulin. The association between meal frequency and glycemic responses was inconclusive. Night fasting duration and restricted eating window are potentially associated with glycemic responses. The current review extensively investigates the association between chrononutrition factors and glycemic responses in adults. However, more prospective cohort and interventional studies are needed to better understand this causal-effect relationship.

Abstract
This study explored the relationship between the Korean Healthy Eating Index (KHEI) and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). This cross-sectional study included 34,174 Korean adults. The KHEI was composed of three subcomponents (adequacy, moderation, and energy balance) and calculated based on a 24 h dietary recall. The total score ranged from 0 to 100, with a higher score indicating a greater adherence to the Korean dietary guidelines. The total KHEI scores were categorized into quartiles (Q1-Q4). NAFLD was classified using the hepatic steatosis index. Logistic regressions were used to estimate odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs). The adjusted OR (95% CI) of NAFLD was 0.95 (0.87-1.03) for the Q2 group, 0.90 (0.83-0.98) for the Q3 group, and 0.79 (0.72-0.87) for the Q4 group, compared with the Q1 group. Among the subcomponents of the KHEI, individuals with high scores in the adequacy component, characterized by an abundant consumption of fruits, vegetables, and dairy products, exhibited the most pronounced association with NAFLD. A higher KHEI score was negatively associated with NAFLD in Korean adults. Therefore, the promotion of healthy dietary patterns can play a beneficial role in the prevention or management of NAFLD.

Abstract
This study was to evaluate the relationship between blood hormone levels and suicidal behaviour. We reviewed Web of Science, PubMed and Embase for literature published up to 10 April 2022. Studies were restricted to English-language articles. Studies measuring blood hormone levels in suicidal and non-suicidal subjects were eligible. Standardized mean differences (SMDs) were applied to evaluate group differences. Overall, 57 studies were eligible, of which 51 evaluated suicide attempts, and 9 assessed suicidal ideation. Random-effects meta-analysis indicated that levels of thyrotropin stimulating hormone (TSH) (SMD = 0.50; 95% CI, 0.27-0.72), leptin (SMD = -1.16; 95% CI, -1.94 to -0.38) and dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate (DHEAS) (SMD = -0.67; 95% CI, -1.13 to -0.21) were related to suicide attempts, whereas progesterone levels (SMD = 0.22; 95% CI, 0.03-0.41) were related to suicidal ideation. This analysis offers evidence linking abnormalities of blood hormones with suicidal behaviour, which may be essential for identifying individuals with suicide attempts and suicidal ideation. Large prospective studies are needed for further clarification of roles of hormones in suicidal behaviour.

Abstract
Background and objectives: Obesity among adolescents is a significant public health concern in the United States. The prevalence of obesity has increased from 13.0% in 2011 to 15.5% in 2019. The association between breakfast skipping and obesity is still controversial, and a mediator role of depression in this association is limited. The purpose of this study was to investigate the independent association between breakfast skipping and obesity and to investigate the mediator role of depressive symptomology between breakfast skipping and obesity prevalence.
Materials and methods: In this cross-sectional study, data were extracted from the CDC's Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance System (YRBSS) for 9th to 12th graders from 2011 through 2020. SAS version 9.4 was used to analyze the data using proc survey frequency and proc survey logistic regression models. The adjusted odds ratios (aORs) with 95% confidence intervals (CI) were estimated. The Sobel test also was performed to test the mediator role of self-reported depression.
Results: Of the 56,320 adolescents, 13.7% did not eat breakfast, 14.1% were obese, and 15.1% had depressive symptomology. Breakfast non-eaters was associated with a 24% increased odds of obesity (aOR: 1.24; 95% CI: 1.14 to 1.36) after adjusting for race/ethnicity, gender, grade level, and behavioral risk factors. A mediator role of self-reported depression was noted using the regression model and Sobel test (z = 3.90, S.E. = 0.02, p< 0.0001) between breakfast skipping and obesity.
Conclusions: Breakfast skipping was independently associated with obesity. Self-reported depression was identified as a mediator factor. Therefore, the mental health condition also needs to be addressed in the prevention of obesity among adolescents.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Balancing calorie control to prevent cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) by skipping breakfast while guarding against its potential risks is a challenge. AIMS To explore the association between skipping breakfast and cardiovascular mortality in individuals with metabolic dysfunction-associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD). METHODS A total of 9926 individuals (including 3004 MAFLD participants) aged 20 years or older were enrolled in the Third National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey and followed for up to 27 years. All participants were classified according to the frequency of breakfast consumption (every day, some days, rarely and never). Cox proportional hazards models were used to estimate the hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for cardiovascular mortality. RESULTS During the 212 239 person-years of follow-up, we documented a total of 2595 deaths including 603 deaths from CVDs. Of these, 1039 deaths including 253 deaths from CVDs were recorded in MAFLD individuals. MAFLD individuals showed higher cardiovascular mortality than MAFLD-free controls (P < 0.001). Furthermore, skipping breakfast was independently associated with high cardiovascular mortality risk (adjusted HR: 2.850, 95% CI: 1.490-5.452; P = 0.002), and a high cerebrovascular disease mortality risk (adjusted HR: 5.570, 95% CI: 1.814-17.099; P = 0.003) in participants with MAFLD. However, skipping breakfast was not associated with cardiovascular mortality in MAFLD-free individuals (adjusted HR: 1.526, 95% CI: 0.701-3.326; P = 0.280). CONCLUSIONS In this US population-based study, skipping breakfast was associated with a high risk of cardiovascular mortality in MAFLD but not MAFLD-free individuals.

Abstract
Introduction There is an increasing awareness regarding the effects of chrono-nutrition on glycemic control and weight regulation. Therefore, this study aimed to determine the relationship between breakfast skipping and late-night eating to body mass index and glycemic control among patients with type 2 diabetes. Subjects and methods This cross-sectional study was conducted among 310 patients with diabetes in Tabuk City, Saudi Arabia during the period from December 2020 to April 2021. A structured questionnaire was used to interview the participants, the following were reported: demographic data, breakfast skipping, late-night eating, smoking, level of exercise, family history of diabetes, and diabetes complications. Weight and height were measured to calculate the body mass index (BMI), and the last glycated hemoglobin was collected to estimate the degree of glycemic control. Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS Statistics, IBM Corp., Armonk, USA) was used for data analysis. The ethical committee of the University of Tabuk approved the research. Results Out of 310 patients with diabetes (54.8% women), nearly half (45.2%) were breakfast-skippers and 20% eat late at night. Breakfast skipping was correlated with BMI (Wald, 5.481, 95% CI, 0.154-0.847, P-value, 0.019). A positive direct correlation was evident between late dinner intake, BMI, and HbA1c (Wald, 4.210, 95% CI, 0.743-0.993, P-value, 0.04 for HbA1c, and Wald, 6.777, 95% CI, 1.0221-1.165, P-value, 0.009 for BMI). Conclusion Breakfast skipping and late dinner intake were associated with obesity, while only late dinner consumption was associated with poor glycemic control. Further larger multi-center studies investigating the chronotype and glycemic index are recommended.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Leptin is known to regulate pathways of energy metabolism, reproduction, and control appetite. Whether plasma leptin levels reflect changes in metabolites of these pathways is unknown. OBJECTIVES We aimed to find whether there is an association between leptin levels and levels of metabolites of energy and hormone metabolism. METHODS We performed an untargeted metabolomics analysis of plasma from 110 healthy adults (men: women = 1:1; aged 18-40 years), using liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry. Blood samples were collected from all the study subjects in the fasting state. Clinical features and markers of obesity and Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) were assessed in all. The association between levels of metabolites and clinical and biochemical parameters was identified using the multivariable-adjusted linear regression model and PLS-DA analysis. RESULTS The leptin level was found to have a significant association with a substantial number of metabolites in women and men. Leptin level was positively associated with glycocholic acid and arachidic acid, metabolites related to energy metabolisms, pregnanediol-3-glucuronide, a metabolite of progesterone metabolism, and quercetin 3'-sulfate, a diet-derived metabolite. Leptin level was negatively associated with ponasteroside A and barringtogenol C levels. Leptin level was positively correlated with adiponectin and negatively with total calorie intake and levels of triglyceride and very-low-density lipoprotein. Leptin levels were associated with lipid and sex hormone metabolism in women, while metabolites involved in amino acid metabolism were correlated to leptin in men. CONCLUSION Our study indicates that leptin level reflects metabolome alterations and hence could be a useful marker to detect early changes in energy and hormone metabolisms.

Abstract
Introduction There is an increasing awareness regarding meal timing and chronotype. The present study aimed to assess breakfast skipping, late dinner intake, and chronotype among Saudi medical students. Methods A cross-sectional study was conducted among 169 clinical phase medical students during the period from January to May 2017. A self-administered questionnaire was used to report the frequency and timing of breakfast and dinner. In addition, the previous cumulative grade average, bedtime, wake-up time, and sleep duration during working days and weekends were reported. The chronotype was calculated from mid-sleep and wakeup time during weekends and sleep dept. The student's weight and height were measured to assess the body mass index (BMI). Participants also completed a diary detailing their sleep habits for two weeks before filling out the questionnaire. The chi-square and Pearson's correlation were used for the statistical analysis. Results Out of 169 medical students (48.5% males), their age was 22.90±1.27 years, 42% were breakfast-skippers, while 49.7% were late dinner consumers. No correlation was found between the previous cumulative grades (GPA), BMI, chronotype, and time lag in wakeup and bedtime between weekdays and weekends (p>0.005). No significant statistical differences between breakfast-skippers and late dinner consumers and their counterparts regarding GPA and chronotype. Conclusion Breakfast skipping and late dinner consumption were prevalent among medical students in Tabuk, Saudi Arabia, future large sample case-control studies to assess the impact of meal timing, and chronotype on academic performance are highly recommended.

Abstract
In addition to the caloric and macronutrient composition of meals, timing of energy consumption may be important for optimal glucose metabolism. Our goal was to examine whether the habitual timing of energy intake was associated with insulin sensitivity in healthy volunteers. Volunteers without diabetes aged 21–50 years completed a 3-day food diary and underwent an oral glucose tolerance test to estimate insulin sensitivity (n = 44). From the food diary, we calculated the proportions of the total energy and macronutrients consumed in the morning and evening, and the clock time at which 25%, 50% and 75% of total energy was consumed. A greater proportion of energy intake in the morning was significantly associated with higher insulin sensitivity estimated by Matsuda Index (B = 2.8 per 10%; 95%CI: 0.3, 5.2). The time at which 25% of energy was consumed was associated with insulin sensitivity estimated by Matsuda Index (B = −1.6 per hour; 95%CI: −3.0, −0.3) and QUICKI (B = −1.4 per hour, 95%CI: −2.8, −0.1). The timing of carbohydrate consumption demonstrated similar associations. Greater energy intake earlier in the day was associated with higher insulin sensitivity in individuals without diabetes.

Abstract
Skipping breakfast has been reported to decrease daily energy and nutrient intake. We aimed to investigate whether habitual breakfast intake frequency is associated with fat-free mass (FFM) in healthy young subjects. We hypothesized that skipping breakfast and the subsequent negative energy balance may be risk factors for reduced muscle mass. This cross-sectional study included 270 healthy young subjects (152 men, 118 women). We collected information on habitual breakfast intake frequency, sleep quality according to the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, circadian rhythm type using the Morningness-Eveningness Questionnaire, and physical activity using the International Physical Activity Questionnaire. According to the definition of National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey in Japan, the subjects were asked to report habitual breakfast intake frequency over the preceding month (excluding consumption of tablets, energy drinks, confectionary, fruits, dairy products, or sweetened beverages alone). FFM was assessed using dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry; then, appendicular FFM (AppFFM) was calculated. We also calculated appendicular skeletal muscle mass index (kg AppFFM/m2) and %AppFFM (% body weight) to adjust body size between individuals. Multiple regression analysis showed that habitual breakfast intake frequency was positively associated with appendicular skeletal muscle mass index (β = .087, P = .031) and %AppFFM (β = .086, P = .045) after adjusting for age, sex, living conditions, Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, Morningness-Eveningness Questionnaire, and International Physical Activity Questionnaire scores as covariates. These findings suggest that skipping breakfast is a risk factor for lower muscle mass in healthy young subjects, irrespective of strong confounders, such as age, sex, and physical activity.

Abstract
The effect of skipping breakfast on health, especially in adults, remains a controversial topic. A secondary data analysis was conducted to examine associations between breakfast eating patterns and weight loss, nutrient intake, and metabolic parameters among participants with metabolic syndrome (MetS) (n = 240). Three randomly selected 24-h dietary recalls were collected from each participant at baseline and at the one-year visit. Skipped breakfast was seen in 32.9% at baseline and in 17.4% at the one-year visit, respectively. At baseline, after adjustment for demographics and physical activity, participants who ate breakfast had a higher thiamin, niacin, and folate intake than did breakfast skippers (p < 0.05); other selected parameters including body weight, dietary quality scores, nutrient intake, and metabolic parameters showed no significant differences between the two groups (p ≥ 0.05). From baseline to one year, after adjustment for covariates, mean fat intake increased by 2.7% (95% confidence intervals (CI): -1.0, 6.5%) of total energy in breakfast skippers in comparison to the 1.2% decrease observed in breakfast eaters (95% CI: -3.4, 1.1%) (p = 0.02). Mean changes in other selected parameters showed no significant differences between breakfast skippers and eaters (p > 0.05). This study did not support the hypothesis that skipping breakfast has impact on body weight, nutrient intakes, and selected metabolic measures in participants with MetS.
