Abstract
Vitamin B12 (VB12) plays a crucial role as an enzymatic cofactor in hemoglobin synthesis. Its deficiency can lead to serious neurological disorders. Despite its importance, current methods of VB12 delivery face challenges, including degradation in the gastrointestinal tract. Therefore, the development of a pH-responsive material for the controlled release of VB12 is crucial. This study aimed to synthesize hydrogels using xanthan gum (XG) and N,N-dimethyl acrylamide (DMA) as a pH-responsive system for VB12 delivery. The XG was vinyl-modified with GMA and characterized by FTIR and NMR. The hydrogels were synthesized through polymerization of modified XG with DMA. We evaluated these materials for their fragility, swelling degree in simulated gastrointestinal fluid, transport mechanism, and cell viability. SEM results revealed that the hydrogels had a porous structure with a diameter of 20 μm, sufficient for retaining and releasing VB12. Cytotoxic assay suggests that the hydrogels have no toxicity being considered biocompatible. In drug release tests, the hydrogels exhibited controlled release of VB12, with equilibrium reached within 2 h in gastric fluid and 8 h in intestinal fluid. These findings suggest that the hydrogels are promising candidates for safe and effective VB12 delivery, with good compatibility and responsiveness to pH changes.

Abstract
Obesity is a significant contributor to various metabolic diseases such as heart disease and diabetes. Due to the adverse effects of synthetic anti-obesity drugs, natural products from functional food plants, which mimic the effects of synthetic chemicals, present promising alternatives. However, many natural plant-derived compounds are poorly soluble in water, resulting in low bioavailability within the gastrointestinal tract, a key limitation for the effectiveness of many hydrophobic substances. In this study we developed a microemulsion-based drug delivery system in Drosophila, which effectively enhanced the solubility of hydrophobic compounds without noticeable effects on food intake or survival in fruit flies. This system consisted of cremophor EL, ethanol and ethyl oleate (7:6:1), which enabled the establishment of an emulsion-based liquid high-fat diet (LHFD) model, followed by a pilot screening of 161 standard substances from traditional Chinese medicine. We found that piperine (PIP), an alkaloid derived from black pepper, significantly decreased triacylglycerol (TAG) levels in both the intestine and in whole flies. We demonstrated that piperine (1 mg/ml) significantly elevated cytosolic Ca2+ levels in enterocytes by activating Transient receptor potential (TRP) channels. TRPV1 agonists such as capsaicin and evodiamine (another alkaloid identified during the screening) also exhibited anti-obesity effects. Increased Ca2+ levels resulted in the suppression of dietary lipase Magro expression through the activation of the transcription factor cAMP response element binding protein (CREB). Furthermore, hydrophobic compounds in the microemulsion were successfully delivered to distal tissues including liver and brain blood vessels in mice, and PIP in the microemulsion was sufficient to reduce body weight in mice. In conclusion, we have developed a microemulsion-based U-GLAD platform for drug delivery, and piperine is identified as a weight-controlling compound, providing a novel approach to the treatment of obesity and its associated symptoms.

Abstract
ABSTRACTThe goal of this study was to fabricate gelatin cross‐linked Locust bean gum (LBG)/guar gum–based hydrogels with microwave assistance for diabetic wound healing applications and evaluate it for physicochemical properties. In the last few years, microwave irradiation has gained acceptance as a reliable technique for quickening and streamlining chemically modified reactions. In order to achieve this, metformin‐loaded LBG and guar gum–based hydrogel were formulated employing microwave radiation. Moreover, the microwave‐assisted–based metformin hydrogel are microwave‐assisted reaction sudden increase in temperature may led to distortion of molecules, very vigorous and which may be hazardous, but environmental sustainability and friendly chemistry concepts are supported by microwave irradiation. The optimized formulation (F3) showed significantly improved physicochemical properties, with a swelling capacity of 480.4% ± 2.5%. The results indicate an appropriate duration for adequate drugs diffusion and nutrition exchange. Controlled disintegrate and sustained release of embedded drug molecules from F3 may have an impact on antibacterial activity. The study indicated that microwave‐assisted polymer blend hydrogels had adequately improved physical qualities, making them a promising candidate for improving diabetic wound healing and hastening skin tissue regeneration.

Abstract
Despite the diverse industrial applications and health benefits of plant gums, significant variations in quality among different types remain underexplored. This study investigates the differences in antioxidant activity, mineral elements, and metabolic profiles among peach, acacia, and karaya gums. Our findings reveal significant differences in total phenol content, with peach gum exhibiting the highest (20.41 μmol/g), followed by acacia gum (3.94 μmol/g) and karaya gum (1.24 μmol/g). Metabolomics and ionomics show that these gums were rich in a variety of small molecular metabolites, including amino acids, organic acids, flavonoids, and lipids, as well as numerous mineral elements. However, the concentrations of these compounds varied significantly across the different gum types. Specifically, peach gum contained higher levels of small-molecule organic acids (such as citric, quinic, and azelaic acids) and flavonoids. In contrast, acacia gum was characterized by a higher content of central amino acids (glutamic and aspartic acids), aromatic amino acids (tyrosine, phenylalanine and tryptophan) and alkaloids (trigonelline, spermidine and spermine). Karaya gum exhibited higher levels of lipids (including palmitic, linoleic, and tetradecanoic acids) and minerals (such as Ca, S, Mg and Fe). Notably, pesticide residues, including thiamethoxam, propiconazole, and difenoconazole, were detected in peach gum, indicating potential health risks. These findings provide valuable insights into the quality analysis of plant gums and the exploration of their functional components.

Abstract
Modern bioeconomy and sustainability demands lead food technology in the development of novel biobased edible food preservatives. Herein, the development and characterization of novel polysaccharide (xanthan gum and kappa-carrageenan)-based nanoemulgels (NGs) enhanced with essential oil derivatives; pure citral (CT); pure carvacrol (CV); and various CT:CV ratios (25:75, 50:50, and 75:25) are presented. The obtained NGs are applied as active edible coatings for extending the shelf life of Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) green table olives of Chalkidiki. The zeta potential demonstrated the high stability of the treatments, while light scattering measurement and scanning electron microscopy images confirmed the <100 nm droplet size. EC50 indicated high antioxidant activity for all the tested samples. The fractional inhibitory concentration (FIC) confirmed the synergistic effect of NG with a CT:CV ratio at 50:50 against Staphylococcus aureus and at CT:CV ratios 25:75 and 75:25 against E. coli O157:H7. NG coatings with CT:CV ratios at 50:50 and at 25:75 effectively controlled the weight loss at 0.5%, maintained stable pH levels, and preserved the visual quality of green olives on day 21. The synergistic effect between CT and CV was confirmed as they reduced the spoilage microorganisms of yeasts and molds by 2-log [CFU/g] compared to the control and almost 1 log [CFU/g] difference from pure CT and CV-based NGs without affecting the growth of beneficial lactic acid bacteria crucial for fermentation. NGs with CT:CV ratios at 50:50 and at 25:75 demonstrated superior effectiveness in preventing discoloration and maintaining the main sensory attributes. Overall, shelf life extension was achieved in 21 compared to only 7 of the uncoated ones. Finally, this study demonstrates the potential of polysaccharide-based NGs in mixtures of CT and CV for the shelf life extension of fermented food products.

Abstract
Anthocyanins (ACNs) possess strong antioxidants, anti-cancer, anti-obesity, anti-diabetic, and anti-inflammatory properties but are limited use by their susceptibility to environmental factors. This study aims to overcome these limitations by developing and assessing a novel coacervate system, consisting of potato protein isolate (PPI) combined with various polysaccharides, to stabilize and encapsulate anthocyanins from black carrot concentrate The polysaccharides included in this system include inulin, gum Arabic, guar gum, pectin, and soluble fiber. The coacervate system's effectiveness in maintaining stability and increasing the bioavailability of anthocyanins was evaluated compared to conventional soybean protein-based systems. The results show that pH considerably influences potato protein solubility, with maximum solubility at strongly acidic (pH 2) conditions. Hygroscopicity and moisture content analysis of the coacervates showed significant variations, with potato protein-guar gum (PPIGG) microcapsules having the lowest moisture content and potato protein gum Arabic (PPIGA) microcapsules having the highest moisture content. SEM imaging illustrated distinct microcapsule morphologies, while FT-IR measurement verified the successful integration of proteins and polysaccharides. The significance of the research reflects its proof that potato protein isolate (PPI) based coacervate systems consists of potato protein with polysaccharides, particularly those containing gum Arabic and pectin, have significant potential for improving anthocyanin stability and bioavailability. These findings guide future studies to investigate other polysaccharides, improve coacervation processes, and explore applications in the food and nutraceutical sectors. It also offers valuable insights for creating efficient encapsulation techniques for bioactive substances.

Abstract
In the context of advanced nanomaterials research, nanogels (NGs) have recently gained broad attention for their versatility and promising biomedical applications. To date, a significant number of NGs have been developed to meet the growing demands in various fields of biomedical research. Summarizing preparation methods, physicochemical and biological properties, and recent applications of NGs may be useful to help explore new directions for their development. This article presents a comprehensive overview of the latest NG synthesis methodologies, highlighting advances in formulation with different types of hydrophilic or amphiphilic polymers. It also underlines recent biomedical applications of NGs in drug delivery and imaging, with a short section dedicated to biosafety considerations of these innovative nanomaterials. In conclusion, this article summarizes recent innovations in NG synthesis and their numerous applications, highlighting their considerable potential in the biomedical field.

Abstract
Already used in the food, pharmaceutical, cosmetic, and agrochemical industries, encapsulation is a strategy used to protect active ingredients from external degradation factors and to control their release kinetics. Various encapsulation techniques have been studied, both to optimise the level of protection with respect to the nature of the aggressor and to favour a release mechanism between diffusion of the active compounds and degradation of the barrier material. Biopolymers are of particular interest as wall materials because of their biocompatibility, biodegradability, and non-toxicity. By forming a stable hydrogel around the drug, they provide a 'smart' barrier whose behaviour can change in response to environmental conditions. After a comprehensive description of the concept of encapsulation and the main technologies used to achieve encapsulation, including micro- and nano-gels, the mechanisms of controlled release of active compounds are presented. A panorama of natural polymers as wall materials is then presented, highlighting the main results associated with each polymer and attempting to identify the most cost-effective and suitable methods in terms of the encapsulated drug.

Abstract
Biofilm formation on the inner surfaces of pipes poses significant threats to water distribution systems, increasing maintenance costs and public health risks. To address this immense issue, we synthesized a nanogel formulation comprising acacia gum (AG) and chitosan (Cs), loaded with varying concentrations of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs), for using as an antimicrobial coating material. AgNPs were synthesized using AG as a reducing and stabilizing agent, exhibiting absorbance at 414 nm. The preparation of AgNPs was proved using TEM. Bactericidal efficacy was assessed against E. coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Enterococcus faecalis, and Bacillus subtilis. Using the dipping coating method, two pipe materials (polypropylene (PP) and ductile iron (DI)) were successfully coated. Notably, AgNPs2@AGCsNG nanogel exhibited potent antibacterial action against a wide range of pathogenic bacteria. Toxicity tests confirmed nanogel safety, suggesting broad applications. High EC50% values underscored their non-toxic nature. This research proposes an effective strategy for biofilm prevention in water systems, offering excellent antibacterial properties and biocompatibility. AG and Cs nanogels loaded with AgNPs promise to enhance water quality, reduce maintenance prices, and protect human public health in water distribution networks.

Abstract
As an important signaling pathway in multicellular eukaryotes, the Wnt signaling pathway participates in a variety of physiological processes. Recent studies have confirmed that the Wnt signaling pathway plays an important role in neurological disorders such as stroke, Alzheimer's disease, and Parkinson's disease. The regulation of Wnt signaling by natural compounds in herbal medicines and nutraceuticals has emerged as a potential strategy for the development of new drugs for neurological disorders. Purpose: The aim of this review is to evaluate the latest research results on the efficacy of natural compounds derived from herbs and nutraceuticals in the prevention and treatment of neurological disorders by regulating the Wnt pathway in vivo and in vitro. A manual and electronic search was performed for English articles available from PubMed, Web of Science, and ScienceDirect from the January 2010 to February 2023. Keywords used for the search engines were "natural products,″ "plant derived products,″ "Wnt+ clinical trials,″ and "Wnt+,″ and/or paired with "natural products″/″plant derived products", and "neurological disorders." A total of 22 articles were enrolled in this review, and a variety of natural compounds from herbal medicine and nutritional foods have been shown to exert therapeutic effects on neurological disorders through the Wnt pathway, including curcumin, resveratrol, and querctrin, etc. These natural products possess antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and angiogenic properties, confer neurovascular unit and blood-brain barrier integrity protection, and affect neural stem cell differentiation, synaptic formation, and neurogenesis, to play a therapeutic role in neurological disorders. In various in vivo and in vitro studies and clinical trials, these natural compounds have been shown to be safe and tolerable with few adverse effects. Natural compounds may serve a therapeutic role in neurological disorders by regulating the Wnt pathway. This summary of the research progress of natural compounds targeting the Wnt pathway may provide new insights for the treatment of neurological disorders and potential targets for the development of new drugs.

Abstract
For the drug delivery system, drug carriers' selection is critical to the drug's success in reaching the desired target. Drug carriers from natural biopolymers are preferred over synthetic materials due to their biocompatibility. The use of polysaccharide gums in the drug delivery system has received considerable attention in recent years. Polysaccharide gums are renewable resources and abundantly found in nature. They could be isolated from marine algae, microorganisms, and higher plants. In terms of carbohydrates, the gums are water-soluble, non-starch polysaccharides with high commercial value. Polysaccharide gums are widely used for controlled-release products, capsules, medicinal binders, wound healing agents, capsules, and tablet excipients. One of the essential applications of polysaccharide gum is drug delivery systems. The various kinds of polysaccharide gums obtained from different plants, marine algae, and microorganisms for the drug delivery system application are discussed comprehensively in this review paper.

Abstract
Natural gums are macro compounds containing monosaccharide (sugar) units bonded by glycosidic to form long polymeric sugar chains of considerably high molecular weight. Natural gums are multifaceted in applications with the main areas being the food and pharmaceutical industries. The recent research interest in corrosion inhibitors is considering natural gums because of their abundance and ecological compatibility. Hence, this review takes a look at the use of natural gums in pure and modified forms in metals protection. The review establishes that the corrosion-protecting ability of natural gums has a direct connotation with their macromolecular weights, chemical composition, and molecular and electronic structures. Immersion duration and temperature are other factors found to affect the inhibition performance of natural gums considerably. The inhibition of natural gums in pure form is found not to be excellent due to their high hydration rate, algal and microbial contamination, solubility that depends on pH, and thermal instability. Common modification techniques adopted by corrosion inhibitor scientists are copolymerization, mixing with chemicals to induce synergism, crosslinking, and insertion of inorganic nanomaterials into the polymer matrix. Infusion of biosynthesized nanoparticles approach towards enhancing the corrosion inhibition efficiency of natural gums is recommended for future studies because of the unique characteristics of nanoparticles.

Abstract
Non-invasive routes for insulin delivery are emerging as alternatives to currently painful subcutaneous injections. For pulmonary delivery, formulations may be in powdered particle form, using carriers such as polysaccharides to stabilise the active principle. Roasted coffee beans and spent coffee grounds (SCG) are rich in polysaccharides, namely galactomannans and arabinogalactans. In this work, the polysaccharides were obtained from roasted coffee and SCG for the preparation of insulin-loaded microparticles. The galactomannan and arabinogalactan-rich fractions of coffee beverages were purified by ultrafiltration and separated by graded ethanol precipitations at 50% and 75%, respectively. For SCG, galactomannan-rich and arabinogalactan-rich fractions were recovered by microwave-assisted extraction at 150 °C and at 180 °C, followed by ultrafiltration. Each extract was spray-dried with insulin 10% (w/w). All microparticles had a raisin-like morphology and average diameters of 1-5 µm, which are appropriate for pulmonary delivery. Galactomannan-based microparticles, independently of their source, released insulin in a gradual manner, while arabinogalactan-based ones presented a burst release. The microparticles were seen to be non-cytotoxic for cells representative of the lung, specifically lung epithelial cells (A549) and macrophages (Raw 264.7) up to 1 mg/mL. This work shows how coffee can be a sustainable source of polysaccharide carriers for insulin delivery via the pulmonary route.
