Synthesis and Characterization of Renewable Polyester Coil Coatings from Biomass-Derived Isosorbide, FDCA, 1,5-Pentanediol, Succinic Acid, and 1,3-Propanediol

An integrated cofactor and co-substrate recycling pathway for the biosynthesis of 1,5-pentanediol

BACKGROUND

1,5-pentanediol (1,5-PDO) is a linear diol with an odd number of methylene groups, which is an important raw material for polyurethane production. In recent years, the chemical methods have been predominantly employed for synthesizing 1,5-PDO. However, with the increasing emphasis on environmentally friendly production, it has been a growing interest in the biosynthesis of 1,5-PDO. Due to the limited availability of only three reported feasible biosynthesis pathways, we developed a new biosynthetic pathway to form a cell factory in Escherichia coli to produce 1,5-PDO.

RESULTS

In this study, we reported an artificial pathway for the synthesis of 1,5-PDO from lysine with an integrated cofactor and co-substrate recycling and also evaluated its feasibility in E.coli. To get through the pathway, we first screened aminotransferases originated from different organisms to identify the enzyme that could successfully transfer two amines from cadaverine, and thus GabT from E. coli was characterized. It was then cascaded with lysine decarboxylase and alcohol dehydrogenase from E. coli to achieve the whole-cell production of 1,5-PDO from lysine. To improve the whole-cell activity for 1,5-PDO production, we employed a protein scaffold of EutM for GabT assembly and glutamate dehydrogenase was also validated for the recycling of NADPH and α-ketoglutaric acid (α-KG). After optimizing the cultivation and bioconversion conditions, the titer of 1,5-PDO reached 4.03 mM.

CONCLUSION

We established a novel pathway for 1,5-PDO production through two consecutive transamination reaction from cadaverine, and also integrated cofactor and co-substrate recycling system, which provided an alternative option for the biosynthesis of 1,5-PDO.

Synthesis of Bio-Based Polyester Resins for Vat Photopolymerization 3D Printing

Driven by environmental considerations, the scientific community has directed great effort towards the synthesis of new materials derived from renewable resources. However, for photocurable resins, most commercially available building blocks still rely on petroleum-based precursors. Herein, we present a simple synthesis route for bio-based acrylate-modified polyester resins, whose viscosity is sufficiently low for processing them with vat photopolymerization 3D printing. The established synthesis route enables the gradual substitution of fossil-based raw materials with bio-based alternatives. The acid number, color and viscosity of the bio-based acrylic resins are characterized and photocurable formulations are prepared by adding a radical photoinitiator. The photopolymerization kinetics, and thermomechanical and mechanical properties of the photopolymers are investigated as a function of the resin structure and benchmarked against a commercially available petroleum-based counterpart. Finally, the processability of the new bio-based resins via digital light processing 3D printing is demonstrated and test specimens are successfully 3D printed with a resolution in the millimeter range.

Polymers without Petrochemicals: Sustainable Routes to Conventional Monomers

Access to a wide range of plastic materials has been rationalized by the increased demand from growing populations and the development of high-throughput production systems. Plastic materials at low costs with reliable properties have been utilized in many everyday products. Multibillion-dollar companies are established around these plastic materials, and each polymer takes years to optimize, secure intellectual property, comply with the regulatory bodies such as the Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals and the Environmental Protection Agency and develop consumer confidence. Therefore, developing a fully sustainable new plastic material with even a slightly different chemical structure is a costly and long process. Hence, the production of the common plastic materials with exactly the same chemical structures that does not require any new registration processes better reflects the reality of how to address the critical future of sustainable plastics. In this review, we have highlighted the very recent examples on the synthesis of common monomers using chemicals from sustainable feedstocks that can be used as a like-for-like substitute to prepare conventional petrochemical-free thermoplastics.

Recent advances in the development of green furan ring-containing polymeric materials based on renewable plant biomass

Fossil resources are rapidly depleting, forcing researchers in various fields of chemistry and materials science to switch to the use of renewable sources and the development of corresponding technologies. In this regard, the field of sustainable materials science is experiencing an extraordinary surge of interest in recent times due to the significant advances made in the development of new polymers with desired and controllable properties. This review summarizes important scientific reports in recent times dedicated to the synthesis, construction and computational studies of novel sustainable polymeric materials containing unchanged (pseudo)aromatic furan cores in their structure. Linear polymers for thermoplastics, branched polymers for thermosets and other crosslinked materials are emerging materials to highlight. Various polymer blends and composites based on sustainable polyfurans are also considered as pathways to achieve high-value-added products.

Isosorbide and 2,5-Furandicarboxylic Acid Based (Co)Polyesters: Synthesis, Characterization, and Environmental Degradation

Poly(2,5-furandicarboxylate)s incorporating aliphatic moieties represent a promising family of polyesters, typically entirely based on renewable resources and with tailored properties, notably degradability. This study aims to go beyond by developing poly(isosorbide 2,5-furandicarboxylate-co-dodecanedioate) copolyesters derived from isosorbide (Is), 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA), and 1,12-dodecanedioic acid (DDA), and studying their degradation under environmental conditions, often overlooked, namely seawater conditions. These novel polyesters have been characterized in-depth using ATR-FTIR, ¹H, and ¹³C NMR and XRD spectroscopies and thermal analysis (TGA and DSC). They showed enhanced thermal stability (up to 330 °C), and the glass transition temperature increased with the content of FDCA from ca. 9 to 60 °C. Regarding their (bio)degradation, the enzymatic conditions lead to the highest weight loss compared to simulated seawater conditions, with values matching 27% vs. 3% weight loss after 63 days of incubation, respectively. Copolymerization of biobased FDCA, Is, and DDA represents an optimal approach for shaping the thermal/(bio)degradation behaviors of these novel polyesters.

Recent Progress on Bio-Based Polyesters Derived from 2,5-Furandicarbonxylic Acid (FDCA)

The big challenge today is the upgrading of sustainable materials to replace miscellaneous ones from petroleum resources. Thus, a generic bio-based building block lays the foundation of the huge bio-market to green economy. 2,5-Furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA), a rigid diacid derived from lignocellulose or fructose, represents a great potential as a contender to terephthalic acid (TPA). Recently, studies on the synthesis, modification, and functionalization of bio-based polyesters based on FDCA have attracted widespread attention. To apply furanic polyesters on engineering plastics, packaging materials, electronics, etc., researchers have extended the properties of basic FDCA-based homo-polyesters by directional copolymerization and composite preparation. This review covers the synthesis and performance of polyesters and composites based on FDCA with emphasis bedded on the thermomechanical, crystallization, barrier properties, and biodegradability. Finally, a summary of what has been achieved and the issues waiting to be addressed of FDCA-based polyester materials are suggested.

Chemocatalytic value addition of glucose without carbon-carbon bond cleavage/formation reactions: an overview

As the monomeric unit of the abundant biopolymer cellulose, glucose is considered a sustainable feedstock for producing carbon-based transportation fuels, chemicals, and polymers. The chemocatalytic value addition of glucose can be broadly classified into those involving C-C bond cleavage/formation reactions and those without. The C6 products obtained from glucose are particularly satisfying because their syntheses enjoy a 100% carbon economy. Although multiple derivatives of glucose retaining all six carbon atoms in their moiety are well-documented, they are somewhat dispersed in the literature and never delineated coherently from the perspective of their carbon skeleton. The glucose-derived chemical intermediates discussed in this review include polyols like sorbitol and sorbitan, diols like isosorbide, furanic compounds like 5-(hydroxymethyl)furfural, and carboxylic acids like gluconic acid. Recent advances in producing the intermediates mentioned above from glucose following chemocatalytic routes have been elaborated, and their derivative chemistry highlighted. This review aims to comprehensively understand the prospects and challenges associated with the catalytic synthesis of C6 molecules from glucose.

Catalytic Transformation of Biomass-Derived Furfurals to Cyclopentanones and Their Derivatives: A Review

Furfural (FF) and 5-(hydroxymethyl)furfural (HMF) are well-recognized biomass-derived chemical building blocks with established applications and markets for several of their derivatives. Attaining a wide spectrum of petrochemicals is the primary target of a biorefinery that employs FF and HMF as the chemical feedstock. In this regard, cyclopentanone (CPN) is a crucial petrochemical intermediate used for synthesizing a diverse range of compounds with immense commercial prospects. The hydrogenative ring rearrangement of FF to CPN in an aqueous medium under catalytic hydrogenation conditions was first reported in 2012, whereas the first report on the catalytic conversion of HMF to 3-(hydroxymethyl)cyclopentanone (HCPN) was published in 2014. Over the past decade, several investigations have been undertaken in converting FF and HMF to CPN and HCPN, respectively. The research studies aimed to improve the scalability, selectivity, environmental footprint, and cost competitiveness of the process. A blend of theoretical and experimental studies has helped to develop efficient, inexpensive, and recyclable heterogeneous catalysts that work under mild reaction conditions while providing excellent yields of CPN and HCPN. The time is ripe to consolidate the data in this area of research and analyze them rigorously in a review article. This work will assist both beginners and experts of this field in acknowledging the accomplishments to date, recognize the challenges, and strategize the way forward.

Pinene-Based Oxidative Synthetic Toolbox for Scalable Polyester Synthesis

Generation of renewable polymers is a long-standing goal toward reaching a more sustainable society, but building blocks in biomass can be incompatible with desired polymerization type, hampering the full implementation potential of biomaterials. Herein, we show how conceptually simple oxidative transformations can be used to unlock the inherent reactivity of terpene synthons in generating polyesters by two different mechanisms starting from the same α-pinene substrate. In the first pathway, α-pinene was oxidized into the bicyclic verbanone-based lactone and subsequently polymerized into star-shaped polymers via ring-opening polymerization, resulting in a biobased semicrystalline polyester with tunable glass transition and melting temperatures. In a second pathway, polyesters were synthesized via polycondensation, utilizing the diol 1-(1'-hydroxyethyl)-3-(2'-hydroxy-ethyl)-2,2-dimethylcyclobutane (HHDC) synthesized by oxidative cleavage of the double bond of α-pinene, together with unsaturated biobased diesters such as dimethyl maleate (DMM) and dimethyl itaconate (DMI). The resulting families of terpene-based polyesters were thereafter successfully cross-linked by either transetherification, utilizing the terminal hydroxyl groups of the synthesized verbanone-based materials, or by UV irradiation, utilizing the unsaturation provided by the DMM or DMI moieties within the HHDC-based copolymers. This work highlights the potential to apply an oxidative toolbox to valorize inert terpene metabolites enabling generation of biosourced polyesters and coatings thereof by complementary mechanisms.

Effects of Methyl Branching on the Properties and Performance of Furandioate-Adipate Copolyesters of Bio-Based Secondary Diols

Furandioate-adipate copolyesters are an emerging class of bio-based biodegradable polymers with great potential to replace fossil-derived terephthalic acid-based copolyesters such as poly(butylene adipate-co-terephthalate) (PBAT). Furandioate-adipate polyesters have almost exclusively been prepared with conventional primary (1°) alcohol diols, while secondary (2°) alcohol diol monomers have largely been overlooked until now, despite preliminary observations that using methyl-branched diols increases the T g of the resultant polyesters. Little is known of what impact the use of 2° alcohol diols has on other properties such as material strength, hydrophobicity, and rate of enzymatic hydrolysis-all key parameters for performance and end-of-life. To ascertain the effects of using 2° diols on the properties of furandioate-adipate copolyesters, a series of polymers from diethyl adipate (DEA) and 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid diethyl ester (FDEE) using different 1° and 2° alcohol diols was prepared. Longer transesterification times and greater excesses of diol (diol/diester molar ratio of 2:1) were found to be necessary to achieve M ws > 20 kDa using 2° alcohol diols. All copolyesters from 2° diols were entirely amorphous and exhibited higher T gs than their linear equivalents from 1° diols. Compared to linear poly(1,4-butyleneadipate-co-1,4-butylenefurandioate), methyl-branched, poly(2,5-hexamethyleneadipate-co-2,5-hexamethylenefurandioate) (0:7:0.3 furandioate/adipate ratio) displayed both higher modulus (67.8 vs 19.1 MPa) and higher extension at break (89.7 vs 44.5 mm). All other methyl-branched copolyesters displayed lower modulus but retained higher extension at break compared with their linear analogues. Enzymatic hydrolysis studies using Humicola insolens cutinase revealed that copolyesters from 2° alcohol diols have significantly decreased rates of biodegradation than their linear equivalents synthesized using 1° alcohol diols, allowing for fine-tuning of polymer stability. Hydrophobicity, as revealed by water contact angles, was also found to generally increase through the introduction of methyl branching, demonstrating potential for these materials in coatings applications.

Oxidative upgrade of furfural to succinic acid using SO3H-carbocatalysts with nitrogen functionalities based on polybenzoxazine

SO₃H-carbocatalysts with nitrogen functionalities were prepared using the carbonization of polybenzoxazine derived from four different amines (aniline, ethylenediamine, triethylenetetramine, and tetraethylenepentamine) and then sulfonation. The obtained SO₃H-carbocatalysts underwent catalytic testing for furfural oxidation with H₂O₂ to produce succinic acid. The effects of nitrogen functionalities were reported for the first time. The results showed that all carbon samples exhibited a microporous characteristic with comparable textural properties and contained various nitrogen functionalities (N-6, N-5, N-Q, and N-X). After sulfonation, the SO₃H-carbocatalyst prepared from tetraethylenepentamine-based polybenzoxazine had the highest amount of sulfonic acid groups (1.45 mmol g^-1) and a high nitrogen content (4.23%), providing a maximum succinic acid yield of 93.0% within a rapid reaction time of 60 min under the optimized conditions. This was higher than from Amberlyst-type catalysts and SO₃H-carbocatalyst without nitrogen functionalities and was ascribed to the synergistic activity of the sulfonic acid groups and nitrogen functionalities. The XPS spectra and computational study confirmed that such nitrogen functionalities, especially N-5, are capable of forming hydrogen bonding with furfural, facilitating the formation of an intermediate compound and thereby enhancing the catalytic efficiency. However, after four cycles, the succinic acid yield decreased to 40% due to leaching of the sulfonic acid groups.

Influence of asymmetric substituent group 2-methyl-1,3-propanediol on bio-based poly(propylene furandicarboxylate) copolyesters

A series of bio-based poly(propylene-co-2-methyl-1,3-propanediol 2,5-furandicarboxylate) (PPMF) copolyesters, with various compositions from poly(propylene 2,5-furandicarboxylate) (PPF) to poly(2-methyl-1,3-propylene 2,5-furandicarboxylate) (PMePF), were synthesized by conventional melt polymerization. The effects of the substituent group to PPF on the thermal properties, mechanical properties, and gas barrier properties were analyzed by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA), tensile testing, and the oxygen permeation test. The introduction of the methyl group with a hydrogen atom altered the thermal behavior and gas barrier properties of copolyesters, suggesting that the glass temperature (Tg) and the melting temperature (Tm) were decreased as the 2-methyl-1,3-propanediol (MPO) content increased. PPF exhibited the highest Tm and Tg of 175.9 °C and 83.0 °C with a melting enthalpy (ΔHm) of 38.6 J g-1, and poly(2-methyl-1,3-propylene 2,5-furandicarboxylate) formed as an amorphous polyester. Moreover, the effect of a substituent methyl group on the barrier properties was attributed to β relaxation and fraction free volume, which could be raised by replacing the methyl group with a hydrogen atom for PPF, weakening the barrier properties.

We summarise the most recent advances in the synthesis and characterisation of degradable thermosetting polyester and polycarbonates, including partially degradable systems derived from itaconic acid and isosorbide.
