In Situ Synthesis of Hybrid Inorganic⁻Polymer Nanocomposites

Exploring the current landscape of chitosan-based hybrid nanoplatforms as cancer theragnostic

In the last decade, investigators have put significant efforts to develop several diagnostic and therapeutic strategies against cancer. Many novel nanoplatforms, including lipidic, metallic, and inorganic nanocarriers, have shown massive potential at preclinical and clinical stages for cancer diagnosis and treatment. Each of these nano-systems is distinct with its own benefits and limitations. The need to overcome the limitations of single-component nano-systems, improve their morphological and biological features, and achieve multiple functionalities has resulted in the emergence of hybrid nanoparticles (HNPs). These HNPs integrate multicomponent nano-systems with diagnostic and therapeutic functions into a single nano-system serving as promising nanotools for cancer theragnostic applications. Chitosan (CS) being a mucoadhesive, biodegradable, and biocompatible biopolymer, has emerged as an essential element for the development of HNPs offering several advantages over conventional nanoparticles including pH-dependent drug delivery, sustained drug release, and enhanced nanoparticle stability. In addition, the free protonable amino groups in the CS backbone offer flexibility to its structure, making it easy for the modification and functionalization of CS, resulting in better drug targetability and cell uptake. This review discusses in detail the existing different oncology-directed CS-based HNPs including their morphological characteristics, in-vitro/in-vivo outcomes, toxicity concerns, hurdles in clinical translation, and future prospects.

Development of novel antimicrobial acrylic denture modified with copper nanoparticles

PURPOSE

This study aimed to synthesize heat-cured poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) acrylic formulated with copper nanoparticles (nCu) for producing dentures with antimicrobial properties and ability to prevent denture stomatitis (DS).

METHODS

nCu/PMMA nanocomposites were prepared through in situ formation of nCu into methyl methacrylate (MMA). The fabricated material was characterized using scanning electron microscopy, spectroscopy (energy-dispersive X-ray, attenuated total reflectance-Fourier-transform infrared, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy), X-ray diffraction analysis, and mechanical flexural tests (ISO 20795-1:2008). Antimicrobial activity against Candida albicans and oral bacteria was determined. MTS assay (ISO 10993-5:2009) and copper release experiments were conducted to assess cytotoxicity. In the clinical trial, participants wearing nCu/PMMA (n=25) and PMMA (n=25) dentures were compared; specifically, DS incidence and severity and Candida species proliferation were assessed for 12 months. Data were analyzed using analysis of variance with Tukey's post hoc test (α=0.05).

RESULTS

nCu/PMMA nanocomposite loaded with 0.045% nCu exhibited the maximum antimicrobial activity against C. albicans and other oral bacteria without producing cytotoxicity in the wearer. nCu/PMMA dentures retained their mechanical and aesthetic properties as well as inhibited the growth of Candida species on both denture surface and patient palate. DS incidence and severity were lower in the nCu/PMMA denture group than in the PMMA denture group.

CONCLUSIONS

PMMA acrylic produced with copper nanotechnology is antimicrobial, biocompatible, and aesthetic and can reduce DS incidence. Thus, this material may act as a novel preventive alternative for oral infections associated with denture use.

Hybrid Materials: A Metareview

The field of hybrid materials has grown so wildly in the last 30 years that writing a comprehensive review has turned into an impossible mission. Yet, the need for a general view of the field remains, and it would be certainly useful to draw a scientific and technological map connecting the dots of the very different subfields of hybrid materials, a map which could relate the essential common characteristics of these fascinating materials while providing an overview of the very different combinations, synthetic approaches, and final applications formulated in this field, which has become a whole world. That is why we decided to write this metareview, that is, a review of reviews that could provide an eagle's eye view of a complex and varied landscape of materials which nevertheless share a common driving force: the power of hybridization.

Efficient strategies for controlled release of nanoencapsulated phytohormones to improve plant stress tolerance

Climate change due to different human activities is causing adverse environmental conditions and uncontrolled extreme weather events. These harsh conditions are directly affecting the crop areas, and consequently, their yield (both in quantity and quality) is often impaired. It is essential to seek new advanced technologies to allow plants to tolerate environmental stresses and maintain their normal growth and development. Treatments performed with exogenous phytohormones stand out because they mitigate the negative effects of stress and promote the growth rate of plants. However, the technical limitations in field application, the putative side effects, and the difficulty in determining the correct dose, limit their widespread use. Nanoencapsulated systems have attracted attention because they allow a controlled delivery of active compounds and for their protection with eco-friendly shell biomaterials. Encapsulation is in continuous evolution due to the development and improvement of new techniques economically affordable and environmentally friendly, as well as new biomaterials with high affinity to carry and coat bioactive compounds. Despite their potential as an efficient alternative to phytohormone treatments, encapsulation systems remain relatively unexplored to date. This review aims to emphasize the potential of phytohormone treatments as a means of enhancing plant stress tolerance, with a specific focus on the benefits that can be gained through the improved exogenous application of these treatments using encapsulation techniques. Moreover, the main encapsulation techniques, shell materials and recent work on plants treated with encapsulated phytohormones have been compiled.

Shall We Tune? From Core-Shell to Cloud Type Nanostructures in Heparin/Silica Hybrids

Heparin plays multiple biological roles depending on the availability of active sites strongly influenced by the conformation and the structure of polysaccharide chains. Combining different components at the molecular scale offers an extraordinary chance to easily tune the structural organization of heparin required for exploring new potential applications. In fact, the combination of different material types leads to challenges that cannot be achieved by each single component. In this study, hybrid heparin/silica nanoparticles were synthesized, and the role of silica as a templating agent for heparin supramolecular organization was investigated. The effect of synthesis parameters on particles compositions was deeply investigated by Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA). Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) reveals a different supramolecular organization of both components, leading to amazing organic-inorganic nanoparticles with different behavior in drug encapsulation and release. Furthermore, favorable biocompatibility for healthy human dermal fibroblasts (HDF) and tumor HS578T cells has been assessed, and a different biological behavior was observed, ascribed to different surface charge and morphology of synthesized nanoparticles.

Polymer-Magnetic Semiconductor Nanocomposites for Industrial Electronic Applications

Nanocomposite materials have acquired great importance, as have similar composite materials on a macroscopic scale, because the reinforcement complements the defects in the properties of the matrix, thus obtaining materials with better mechanical, thermal, and electrical properties, among others. At the same time, the importance and research of polymeric nanocomposites reinforced with nanoparticles of various types have grown. Among those that have stood out the most in the electronics industry are polymeric matrices reinforced with nanoparticles that present dual behavior, that is, both magnetic and semiconductor. This property has been very well used in developing electronic devices such as televisions, computers, and smartphones, which are part of everyday life. In this sense, this review presents a compilation of the synthetic methods to produce polymer nanocomposites with dual magnetic and semiconductor behavior and their potential applications within electronic fields and new relevant trends.

Functionalization of 2D MoS2 Nanosheets with Various Metal and Metal Oxide Nanostructures: Their Properties and Application in Electrochemical Sensors

Two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenides (2D TMDs) have gained considerable attention due to their distinctive properties and broad range of possible applications. One of the most widely studied transition metal dichalcogenides is molybdenum disulfide (MoS₂). The 2D MoS₂ nanosheets have unique and complementary properties to those of graphene, rendering them ideal electrode materials that could potentially lead to significant benefits in many electrochemical applications. These properties include tunable bandgaps, large surface areas, relatively high electron mobilities, and good optical and catalytic characteristics. Although the use of 2D MoS₂ nanosheets offers several advantages and excellent properties, surface functionalization of 2D MoS₂ is a potential route for further enhancing their properties and adding extra functionalities to the surface of the fabricated sensor. The functionalization of the material with various metal and metal oxide nanostructures has a significant impact on its overall electrochemical performance, improving various sensing parameters, such as selectivity, sensitivity, and stability. In this review, different methods of preparing 2D-layered MoS₂ nanomaterials, followed by different surface functionalization methods of these nanomaterials, are explored and discussed. Finally, the structure-properties relationship and electrochemical sensor applications over the last ten years are discussed. Emphasis is placed on the performance of 2D MoS₂ with respect to the performance of electrochemical sensors, thereby giving new insights into this unique material and providing a foundation for researchers of different disciplines who are interested in advancing the development of MoS₂-based sensors.

Advanced polymeric/inorganic nanohybrids: An integrated platform for gas sensing applications

Rapid industrial development, vehicles, domestic activities and mishandling of garbage are the main sources of pollutants, which are destroying the atmosphere. There is a need to continuously monitor these pollutants for the safety of the environment and human beings. Conventional instruments for monitoring of toxic gases are expensive, bigger in size and time-consuming. Hybrid materials containing organic and inorganic components are considered potential candidates for diverse applications, including gas sensing. Gas sensors convert the information regarding the analyte into signals. Various polymeric/inorganic nanohybrids have been used for the sensing of toxic gases. Composites of different polymeric materials like polyaniline (PANI), poly (4-styrene sulfonate) (PSS), poly (3,4-ethylene dioxythiophene) (PEDOT), etc. with various metal/metal oxide nanoparticles have been reported as sensing materials for gas sensors because of their unique redox features, conductivity and facile operation at room temperature. Polymeric nanohybrids showed better performance because of the larger surface area of nanohybrids and the synergistic effect between polymeric and inorganic materials. This review article focuses on the recent developments of emerging polymeric/inorganic nanohybrids for sensing various toxic gases including ammonia, hydrogen, nitrogen dioxide, carbon oxides and liquefied petroleum gas. Advantages, disadvantages, operating conditions and prospects of hybrid composites have also been discussed.

In Situ Grown Nanohydroxyapatite Hybridized Graphene Oxide: Enhancing the Strength and Bioactivity of Polymer Scaffolds

Graphene oxide (GO) and nanohydroxyapatite (nHA) are usually used for improving the strength and bioactivity of polymer scaffolds. However, due to the nano-aggregation effect, these applications often face the problems of uneven dispersion and poor interface bonding. In this work, their hybrids (GO@nHA) were constructed by combining chemical modification and in situ growth methods, realizing the perfect combination of nHA and GO. First, the functionalization of GO was realized through oxidative self-polymerization of dopamine (DA), and the product was denoted GO@DA. Furthermore, the in situ growth of nHA on GO@DA was induced by hydrothermal reactions to prepare GO@nHA hybrids. Then, the obtained hybrid was added to the polymer matrix, and a composite scaffold was prepared through a selective laser sintering process. The results demonstrated that with the addition of GO@DA and GO@nHA, the ultimate strength was increased to 16.8 and 18.6 MPa, respectively, which is 66 and 84% higher than the 10.1 MPa of the polylactic acid (PLA) scaffold. In addition, composite scaffolds exhibited good biomineralization ability in vitro and also promoted the adhesion and proliferation of MG63 cells.

An Overview of Polymer-Supported Catalysts for Wastewater Treatment through Light-Driven Processes

In recent years, alarm has been raised due to the presence of chemical contaminants of emerging concern (CECs) in water. This concern is due to the risks associated with their exposure, even in small amounts. These complex compounds cannot be removed or degraded by existing technologies in wastewater treatment plants. Therefore, advanced oxidation processes have been studied, with the objective of developing a technology capable of complementing the conventional water treatment plants. Heterogenous photocatalysis stands out for being a cost-effective and environmentally friendly process. However, its most common form (with suspended catalytic particles) requires time-consuming and costly downstream processes. Therefore, the heterogeneous photocatalysis process with a supported catalyst is preferable. Among the available supports, polymeric ones stand out due to their favorable characteristics, such as their transparency, flexibility and stability. This is a relatively novel process; therefore, there are still some gaps in the scientific knowledge. Thus, this review article aims to gather the existing information about this process and verify which questions are still to be answered.

Polymeric Nanocomposites for Environmental and Industrial Applications

Polymeric nanocomposites (PNC) have an outstanding potential for various applications as the integrated structure of the PNCs exhibits properties that none of its component materials individually possess. Moreover, it is possible to fabricate PNCs into desired shapes and sizes, which would enable controlling their properties, such as their surface area, magnetic behavior, optical properties, and catalytic activity. The low cost and light weight of PNCs have further contributed to their potential in various environmental and industrial applications. Stimuli-responsive nanocomposites are a subgroup of PNCs having a minimum of one promising chemical and physical property that may be controlled by or follow a stimulus response. Such outstanding properties and behaviors have extended the scope of application of these nanocomposites. The present review discusses the various methods of preparation available for PNCs, including in situ synthesis, solution mixing, melt blending, and electrospinning. In addition, various environmental and industrial applications of PNCs, including those in the fields of water treatment, electromagnetic shielding in aerospace applications, sensor devices, and food packaging, are outlined.

Silica-Supported Styrene-Co-Divinylbenzene Pickering Emulsion Polymerization: Tuning Surface Charge and Hydrophobicity by pH and Co-Aid Adsorption

In this work, polymerizations of styrene (St) in the presence of divinylbenzene (DVB) as a crosslinking agent and sodium 4-vinylbenzenesulfonate (VBS) have been performed in Pickering emulsions, using silica nanoparticles (SNps) as stabilizing agents and ammonium persulfate as a hydrophilic initiator. In oil-in-water Pickering emulsions with alkaline continuous phase (pH = 9) at 1, 2, and 3 wt% DVB (relative to St), polydisperse spheroid copolymer submicronic nanoparticles were obtained. Comparatively, polymerizations performed in Pickering emulsions with acidic continuous phase (pH = 5) allowed preparing St-co-DVB microspheres with core–shell structures at 1 wt% DVB and St-co-DVB hybrid monoliths with bi-continuous morphologies at 2 and 3 wt% DVB. It is noteworthy that this work reports Pickering emulsion polymerization as a new strategy for preparing hybrid percolated scaffolds with bi-continuous porosity. The proposed mechanisms originated by pH, DVB, and VBS and the drastic impact caused on the final morphology obtained, either hybrid particles or monoliths, are discussed herein.

Templated Synthesis and Assembly of Two-, Three- and Six-Patch Silica Nanoparticles with a Controlled Patch-to-Particle Size Ratio

We report a fabrication route of silica nanoparticles with two, three or six patches with an easily tunable patch-to-particle size ratio. The synthetic pathway includes two main stages: the synthesis of silica/polystyrene multipod-like templates and the selective growth of their silica core through an iterative approach. Electron microscopy of the dimpled nanoparticles obtained after dissolution of the polystyrene nodules of the multipod-like nanoparticles provides evidence of the conformational growth of the silica core. Thanks to the presence of some polymer chains, which remained grafted at the bottom of the dimples after the dissolution of the PS nodules, the solvent-induced assembly of the patchy nanoparticles is performed. Chains, hexagonal suprastructures and cubic lattices are obtained from the assembly of two-, three- and six-patch silica nanoparticles, respectively. Our study can guide future work in both patchy nanoparticle synthesis and self-assembly. It also opens new routes towards the fabrication of specific classes of one-, two- and three-dimensional colloidal lattices, including complex tilings.

Nanoscale mechanical and electrical characterization of the interphase in polyimide/silicon nitride nanocomposites

Polymer nanocomposites (pNC) have attracted wide interests in electrical insulation applications. Compared to neat matrices or microcomposites, pNC provide significant improvements in combined electrical, mechanical and thermal properties. In the understanding of the reasons behind these improvements, a major role was attributed to the interphase, the interaction zone between the nanoparticles (NP) and the matrix. Because of their nanoscale dimensions, the interphase properties are mostly theoretically described but rarely experimentally characterized. The aim of this study is to propose a nanoscale measurement protocol in order to probe mechanical (Young modulus) and electrical (dielectric permittivity) interphase features using, respectively, the peak force quantitative nanomechanical (PF-QNM) and the electrostatic force microscopy (EFM) modes of the atomic force microscopy. Measurements are performed on polyimide/silicon nitride (Si₃N₄) nanocomposite and the effect of a silane coupling agent treatment of Si₃N₄NP is considered. In order to accurately probe mechanical properties in PF-QNM mode, the impacting parameters such as the applied force, the deformation and the topography are taken into account. The interphase region has shown a higher elastic modulus compared to the matrix and a higher width (W_I) value for treated NP. From EFM measurements combined to a finite element model feeded with theW_Ivalues obtained from PF-QNM, the interphase permittivity is determined. The corresponding values are lower than the matrix one and similar for untreated and treated NP. This is in total agreement with its higher elastic modulus and implies that the interphase is a region around the NP where the polymer chains present a better organization and thus, a restricted mobility.

Temperature Influence on PI/Si3N4 Nanocomposite Dielectric Properties: A Multiscale Approach

The interphase area appears to have a great impact on nanocomposite (NC) dielectric properties. However, the underlying mechanisms are still poorly understood, mainly because the interphase properties remain unknown. This is even more true if the temperature increases. In this study, a multiscale characterization of polyimide/silicon nitride (PI/Si₃N₄) NC dielectric properties is performed at various temperatures. Using a nanomechanical characterization approach, the interphase width was estimated to be 30 ± 2 nm and 42 ± 3 nm for untreated and silane-treated nanoparticles, respectively. At room temperature, the interphase dielectric permittivity is lower than that of the matrix. It increases with the temperature, and at 150 °C, the interphase and matrix permittivities reach the same value. At the macroscale, an improvement of the dielectric breakdown is observed at high temperature (by a factor of 2 at 300 °C) for NC compared to neat PI. The comparison between nano- and macro-scale measurements leads to the understanding of a strong correlation between interphase properties and NC ones. Indeed, the NC macroscopic dielectric permittivity is well reproduced from nanoscale permittivity results using mixing laws. Finally, a strong correlation between the interphase dielectric permittivity and NC breakdown strength is observed.

Structure-Function Relationships of Nanocarbon/Polymer Composites for Chemiresistive Sensing: A Review

Composites of organic compounds and inorganic nanomaterials provide novel sensing platforms for high-performance sensor applications. The combination of the attractive functionalities of nanomaterials with polymers as an organic matrix offers promising materials with tunable electrical, mechanical, and chemisensitive properties. This review mainly focuses on nanocarbon/polymer composites as chemiresistors. We first describe the structure and properties of carbon nanofillers as reinforcement agents used in the manufacture of polymer composites and the sensing mechanism of developed nanocomposites as chemiresistors. Then, the design and synthesizing methods of polymer composites based on carbon nanofillers are discussed. The electrical conductivity, mechanical properties, and the applications of different nanocarbon/polymer composites for the detection of different analytes are reviewed. Lastly, challenges and the future vision for applications of such nanocomposites are described.

The Structure, Morphology, and Complex Permittivity of Epoxy Nanodielectrics with In Situ Synthesized Surface-Functionalized SiO2

Epoxy nanocomposites have demonstrated promising properties for high-voltage insulation applications. An in situ approach to the synthesis of epoxy-SiO2 nanocomposites was employed, where surface-functionalized SiO2 (up to 5 wt.%) is synthesized directly in the epoxy. The dispersion of SiO2 was found to be affected by both the pH and the coupling agent used in the synthesis. Hierarchical clusters of SiO2 (10-60 nm) formed with free-space lengths of 53-105 nm (increasing with pH or SiO2 content), exhibiting both mass and surface-fractal structures. Reducing the amount of coupling agent resulted in an increase in the cluster size (~110 nm) and the free-space length (205 nm). At room temperature, nanocomposites prepared at pH 7 exhibited up to a 4% increase in the real relative permittivity with increasing SiO2 content, whereas those prepared at pH 11 showed up to a 5% decrease with increasing SiO2 content. Above the glass transition, all the materials exhibited low-frequency dispersion effect resulting in electrode polarization, which was amplified in the nanocomposites. Improvements in the dielectric properties were found to be not only dependent on the state of dispersion, but also the structure and morphology of the inorganic nanoparticles.

Thermoelectric Performance of Mechanically Mixed BixSb2-xTe3-ABS Composites

In the current study, polymer-based composites, consisting of Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene (ABS) and Bismuth Antimony Telluride (Bi_xSb_2−xTe₃), were produced using mechanical mixing and hot pressing. These composites were investigated regarding their electrical resistivity and Seebeck coefficient, with respect to Bi doping and Bi_xSb_2-xTe₃ loading into the composite. Experimental results showed that their thermoelectric performance is comparable—or even superior, in some cases—to reported thermoelectric polymer composites that have been produced using other complex techniques. Consequently, mechanically mixed polymer-based thermoelectric materials could be an efficient method for low-cost and large-scale production of polymer composites for potential thermoelectric applications.

The influence of SiO₂/TiO₂ nanocomposites (STNCs) content on non-radiative energy transfer (Förster-type) from poly (9,9′-dioctylfluorene-2,7-diyl) (PFO) to poly [2-methoxy-5-(2-ethylhexyloxy)-1,4-phenylenevinylene] (MEH-PPV) using steady-state and time-resolved photoluminescence spectroscopies was investigated at room temperature. The improved energy transfer from PFO to MEH-PPV upon an increment of the STNCs was achieved by examining absorbance, emission (PL) and photoluminescence excitation (PLE) spectra. The shorter values of the quantum yield (φ_DA) and lifetime (τ_DA) of the PFO in the hybrid thin films compared with the pure PFO, indicating efficient energy transfer from PFO to MEH-PPV with the increment of STNCs in the hybrid. The energy transfer parameters can be tuned by increment of the STNCs in the hybrid of PFO/MEH-PPV. The Stern–Volmer value (k_SV), quenching rate value (k_q), Förster radius (R₀), distance between the molecules of PFO and MEH-PPV (R_DA), energy transfer lifetime (τ_ET), energy transfer rate (k_ET), total decay rate of the donor (TDR), critical concentration (A_o), and conjugation length (A_π) were calculated. The gradually increasing donor lifetime and decreasing acceptor lifetime, upon increasing the STNCs content, prove the increase in conjugation length and meanwhile enhance in the energy transfer.

The changing climatic conditions have led to the concurrent emergence of virulent microbial pathogens that attack crop plants and exhibit yield and quality deterring impacts on the affected crop. To counteract, the widespread infections of fungal pathogens and post-harvest diseases it is highly warranted to develop sustainable techniques and tools bypassing traditional agriculture practices. Nanotechnology offers a solution to the problems in disease management in a simple lucid way. These technologies are revolutionizing the scientific/industrial sectors. Likewise, in agriculture, the nano-based tools are of great promise particularly for the development of potent formulations ensuring proper delivery of agrochemicals, nutrients, pesticides/insecticides, and even growth regulators for enhanced use efficiency. The development of novel nanocomposites for improved management of fungal diseases can mitigate the emergence of resilient and persistent fungal pathogens and the loss of crop produce due to diseases they cause. Therefore, in this review, we collectively manifest the role of nanocomposites for the management of fungal diseases.

A promising drug delivery candidate (CS-g-PMDA-CYS-fused gold nanoparticles) for inhibition of multidrug-resistant uropathogenic Serratia marcescens

Antibiotic resistance amongst microbial pathogens is a mounting serious issue in researchers and physicians. Various alternatives to overcome the multidrug-resistant bacterial infections are under search, and biofilm growth inhibition is one of them. In this investigation, a polymeric drug delivery system loaded with multi-serratial drugs to improve the delivery of drugs against urinary tract infection causative Serratia marcescens. The chitosan grafted pyromellitic dianhydride - cysteine (CS-g-PMDA-CYS) was conjugated with AuNPs by using the -SH group of CYS and RF (rifampicin) and INH (isoniazid) were loaded in AuNPs-fused CS-g-PMDA-CYS system. Several physicochemical techniques characterized this fabricated AuNPs/RF/INH/CS-g-PMDA-CYS system. The successful encapsulation of RF and INH in AuNPs-fused CS-g-PMDA-CYS polymer had confirmed, and it observed the loading capacity for RF and INH was 9.02% and 13.12%, respectively. The in vitro drug discharge pattern was perceived high in pH 5.5 compared with pH 7.4. The AuNPs/RF/INH/CS-g-PMDA-CYS escalates 74% of Caenorhabditis elegans survival during Serratia marcescens infection by aiming biofilm development and virulence in S. marcescens. Author postulate that the fabricated system is a promising drug carrier and delivery system for inhibition of multidrug-resistant bacterias like S. marcescens.

Cellulose Acetate Incorporating Organically Functionalized CeO2 NPs: Efficient Materials for UV Filtering Applications

One of the major issues faced when constructing various materials incorporating inorganic nanoparticles (NPs) is aggregation leading to loss of their final activity. In our work, cellulose acetate (CA) has been used to serve as matrix for the synthesis of UV-shielding and transparent films containing various amounts (1-5 wt.%) of cerium oxide (CeO2) NPs. In order to attain an improved dispersion and a better connectivity between NPs and the cellulose matrix, the surface of CeO2 NPs have been previously functionalized by the reaction with 3-aminopropyl(diethoxy)methylsilane (APDMS). The uniform dispersion of the NPs in the homogeneous thin films has been evidenced by using Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) and Fourier Transformation Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) characterization. The investigation of the optical properties for the hybrid films through UV-Vis spectroscopy revealed that the presence of CeO2 NPs in the CA matrix determined the appearance of strong UV absorption bands in the region 312-317 nm, which supports their use as efficient UV absorbers. This study has shown that UV shielding ability of the nanocomposites can be easily tuned by adjusting the numberof inorganic NPs in the CA template.

Absorbable nanocomposites composed of mesoporous bioglass nanoparticles and polyelectrolyte complexes for surgical hemorrhage control

Absorbable polyelectrolyte complexes-based hemostats are promising for controlling hemorrhage in iatrogenic injuries during surgery, whereas their hemostatic efficacy and other performances require further improvement for clinical application. Herein, spherical mesoporous bioglass nanoparticles (mBGN) were fabricated, and mBGN-polyelectrolyte complexes (composed of carboxymethyl starch and chitosan oligosaccharide) nanocomposites (BGN/PEC) with different mBGN contents were prepared via in situ coprecipitation followed by lyophilization. The effect of various mBGN content (10 and 20 wt%) on morphology, zeta potential, water absorption, degradation behavior and ion release were systematically evaluated. The in vitro degradability was dramatically promoted and a more neutral environment was achieved with the incorporation of mBGN, which is preferable for surgical applications. The in vitro coagulation test with whole blood demonstrated that the incorporation of mBGN facilitated blood clotting process. The plasma coagulation evaluation indicated that BGN/PEC had increased capability to accelerate coagulation cascade via the intrinsic pathway than that of the PEC, while have inapparent influence on the extrinsic and common pathway. The in vivo hemostatic evaluation in a rabbit hepatic hemorrhage model revealed that BGN/PEC with 10 wt% mBGN (10BGN/PEC) treatment group had the lowest blood loss, although its hemostatic time is close to that of 20BGN/PEC treatment group. The cytocompatibility evaluation with MC3T3-L1 fibroblasts indicated that 10BGN/PEC induced a ~25% increase of cell viability compared to the PEC at days 4 and 7, indicating improved biocompatibility. These findings support the promising application of absorbable BGN/PEC with optimized mBGN content as internal hemostats and present a platform for further development of PEC-based hemostats.

Hierarchy of Hybrid Materials-The Place of Inorganics-in-Organics in it, Their Composition and Applications

Hybrid materials, or hybrids incorporating both organic and inorganic constituents, are emerging as a very potent and promising class of materials due to the diverse, but complementary nature of the properties inherent of these different classes of materials. The complementarity leads to a perfect synergy of properties of desired material and eventually an end-product. The diversity of resultant properties and materials used in the construction of hybrids, leads to a very broad range of application areas generated by engaging very different research communities. We provide here a general classification of hybrid materials, wherein organics-in-inorganics (inorganic materials modified by organic moieties) are distinguished from inorganics-in-organics (organic materials or matrices modified by inorganic constituents). In the former area, the surface functionalization of colloids is distinguished as a stand-alone sub-area. The latter area-functionalization of organic materials by inorganic additives-is the focus of the current review. Inorganic constituents, often in the form of small particles or structures, are made of minerals, clays, semiconductors, metals, carbons, and ceramics. They are shown to be incorporated into organic matrices, which can be distinguished as two classes: chemical and biological. Chemical organic matrices include coatings, vehicles and capsules assembled into: hydrogels, layer-by-layer assembly, polymer brushes, block co-polymers and other assemblies. Biological organic matrices encompass bio-molecules (lipids, polysaccharides, proteins and enzymes, and nucleic acids) as well as higher level organisms: cells, bacteria, and microorganisms. In addition to providing details of the above classification and analysis of the composition of hybrids, we also highlight some antagonistic yin-&-yang properties of organic and inorganic materials, review applications and provide an outlook to emerging trends.
