Radical Scavenging Activities of Novel Cationic Inulin Derivatives

Engineered inulin-based hybrid biomaterials for augmented immunomodulatory responses

Modified biopolymers that are based on prebiotics have been found to significantly contribute to immunomodulatory events. In recent years, there has been a growing use of modified biomaterials and polymer-functionalized nanomaterials in the treatment of various tumors by activating immune cells. However, the effectiveness of immune cells against tumors is hindered by several biological barriers, which highlights the importance of harnessing prebiotic-based biopolymers to enhance host defenses against cancer, thus advancing cancer prevention strategies. Inulin, in particular, plays a crucial role in activating immune cells and promoting the secretion of cytokines. Therefore, this mini-review aims to emphasize the importance of inulin in immunomodulatory responses, the development of inulin-based hybrid biopolymers, and the role of inulin in enhancing immunity and modifying cell surfaces. Furthermore, we discuss the various approaches of chemical modification for inulin and their potential use in cancer treatment, particularly in the field of cancer immunotherapy.

Phytochemical composition and in vitro antioxidant and antimicrobial activities of Bersama abyssinica F. seed extracts

Medicinal plants can be potential sources of therapeutic agents. Traditional healers use a medicinal plant from Ethiopia, Bersama abyssinica Fresen, to treat various diseases. This study aimed to investigate the phytochemical components and antioxidant and antimicrobial activities of B. abyssinica seed extracts (BASE). Gas chromatography coupled to mass spectroscopy (GC-MS) analysis was used to determine the phytochemical compositions of BASE. The antioxidant activities were assessed by using 2, 2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) assay, thiobarbituric acid-reactive species (TBARS) assay, ferric chloride reducing assay and hydroxyl scavenging capacity assay. Antimicrobial activity was investigated using the agar well diffusion method. Phytochemical screening showed the presence of saponins, glycosides, tannins, steroids, phenols, flavonoids, terpenoids, and alkaloids. GC-MS analysis revealed the presence of 30 volatile compounds; α-pinene (23.85%), eucalyptol (20.74%), β-pinene (5.75%), D-limonene (4.05%), and o-cymene (5.02%). DPPH-induced free radical scavenging (IC50 = 8.78), TBARS (IC50 = 0.55 µg/mL), and hydroxyl radicals' scavenging capacities assays (IC50 = 329.23) demonstrated high antioxidant effects of BASE. Reducing power was determined based on Fe3+-Fe2+ transformation in the presence of extract. BASE was found to show promising antibacterial activity against S. aureus, E. coli, and P. aeruginosa (zone of inhibition 15.7 ± 2.5 mm, 16.0 ± 0.0 mm, and 16.7 ± 1.5 mm, respectively), but excellent antifungal activities against C. albican and M. furfur (zone of inhibition 22.0 ± 2.0 mm and 22.0 ± 4.0 mm, respectively). The seeds of B. abyssinica grown in Ethiopia possess high antioxidant potential, promising antibacterial and superior antifungal activity. Therefore, seeds of B. abyssinica provide a potential source for drug discovery.

Cationic inulin as a new surface decoration hydrocolloid for improving the stability of liposomal nanocarriers

The aim of the present study was to investigate the cationization of inulin with Williamson's etherification method, and compare cationic inulin with unmodified inulin coatings for stabilizing nanoliposomes (NLPs). The synthetized cationic inulin was characterized by Fourier transforms infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, carbon hydrogen nitrogen (CHN) elemental analysis, and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. Three concentrations of inulin and cationic inulin (1, 2, and 4 mg/mL) were used for the coating of NLPs. The concentration of 4 mg/mL was found to be optimal for inulin and cationic inulin as surface coating, on the basis of particle size, zeta potential, and microstructural morphology. The lowest values of particle size (93.41 nm), polydispersity index (0.25), and negative zeta potential (-24.41 mV) were related to the coated NLPs with cationic inulin at a concentration of 4 mg/mL. The transmission electron microscopy image of the coated NLPs with cationic inulin exhibited a spherical and core-shell structure. The coated NLPs with cationic inulin showed the highest thermal stability, physical stability, and oxidative stability. In conclusion, cationic inulin coating conferred a stronger protection than the unmodified inulin coating of NLPs. The technique developed here can be applied for surface decoration of NLPs to improve their stability.

Coating of betanin and carvone Co-loaded nanoliposomes with synthesized cationic inulin: A strategy for enhancing the stability and bioavailability

Betanin (BET) and carvone (CAR) as antioxidant and antibacterial compounds were co-loaded in the coated nanoliposomes (NLPs) with cationic inulin to improve their stability and bioavailability. A cationic inulin was successfully synthesized and used for surface coating of the NLPs. The zeta potential, particle size, and PDI values of the coated NLPs were 21.70 ± 7.00 mV, 143.5 ± 15.2 nm, and 0.35 ± 0.03 respectively. The encapsulation efficiency values of the coated NLPs for BE and CAR were 86.1 ± 3.9 and 77.2 ± 5.2 %, respectively. Electron microscopy results showed that the coated NLPs had spherical and core-shell structures. The slowest sustained release profile in the simulated gastrointestinal condition was obtained for the coated NLPs. The physical and oxidative stability of NLPs, as well as the physical stability of loaded compounds were improved by surface coating. In conclusion, the developed nanocarrier is a suitable platform to use all benefits of BET and CAR in the food industry.
