Adsorptive Removal of Antibiotic Ciprofloxacin from Aqueous Solution Using Protein-Modified Nanosilica

Effects of Salts and Other Contaminants on Ciprofloxacin Removal Efficiency of Green Synthesized Copper Nanoparticles

Ciprofloxacin (CIP), a broad-spectrum fluoroquinolone antibiotic, is commonly used in aquaculture to prevent and treat bacterial infections in aquatic animals. For this reason, aquatic environments contain CIP and its derivatives, which lead to the development of drug-resistant bacteria. In the present study, copper nanoparticles were prepared using Garcinia mangostana extract (GME-CuNPs) as a reducing agent and evaluated for their CIP removal efficiency (CRE). The results demonstrate that within 20 min, GME-CuNPs at 25 mM possess a CRE of 92.02 ± 0.09% from CIP-containing aqueous media with pH 6-7. The CRE is influenced by both monovalent and divalent salts. A high salt concentration significantly reduces the CRE. Contaminants in fish wastewater can reduce the CRE, but phenolics, flavonoids, tannins, and ammonia do not affect the CRE. Our results reveal that the CRE is controlled by electrostatic attraction between the negatively charged GME-CuNPs and the cationic species of CIP. The CRE is reduced by wastewater with a pH higher than 8.0, in which the CIP molecules have a negative charge, resulting in a repulsive force due to the negative charge of GME-CuNPs. In fish wastewater with a pH lower than 7.0, GME-CuNPs show the potential to achieve a CRE above 80%. Therefore, pH adjustment to a range of 6-7 in fish wastewater before treatment is deemed imperative. It is concluded that the newly developed GME-CuNPs possess excellent activity in CIP elimination from actual fish wastewater samples. Our findings suggest that GME-CuNPs can be a promising tool to effectively eliminate antibiotics from the environment.

Towards sorptive eradication of pharmaceutical micro-pollutant ciprofloxacin from aquatic environment: A comprehensive review

Antibiotics are widely prioritized pharmaceuticals frequently adopted in medication for addressing numerous ailments of humans and animals. However, the non-judicious disposal of ciprofloxacin (CIP) with concentration levels exceeding threshold limit in an aqueous environment has been the matter of growing concern nowadays. CIP is found in various waterways with appreciable mobility due to its limited decay in solidified form. Hence, the effective eradication strategy of this non-steroidal anti-inflammatory antibiotic from aqueous media is pivotal for preventing the users and the biosphere from their hazardous impacts. Reportedly several customary techniques like reverse osmosis, precipitation, cross-filtration, nano-filtration, ion exchange, microbial remediation, and adsorption have been employed to eliminate CIP from water. Out of them, adsorption is ascertained to be a potential method because of lesser preliminary investment costs, ease of operation, greater efficiency, less energy usage, reduced chemical and biological slurry production, and ready availability of precursor materials. Towards remediation of ciprofloxacin-laden water, plenty of researchers have used different adsorbents. However, the present-day challenge is opting the promising sorbent and its application towards industrial scale-up which is vital to get reviewed. In this article, adsorbents of diverse origins are reviewed in terms of their performances in CIP removal. The review stresses the impact of various factors on sorptive assimilation of CIP, adsorption kinetics, isotherms, mechanism of ionic interaction, contrivances for CIP detection, cost estimation and reusability assessments of adsorbents also that may endorse the next-generation investigators to decide the efficacious, environmental appealing and cost-competitive adsorbents for effective riddance of CIP from wastewater.

Bioinspired Stevia rebaudiana Green Zinc Oxide Nanoparticles for the Adsorptive Removal of Antibiotics from Water

Green zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) synthesized using Stevia rebaudiana as a reducing agent were investigated as ecofriendly adsorbents for the removal of the antibiotics ciprofloxacin (CIP) and tetracycline (TET) from water. Green ZnO NPs were synthesized using a rapid novel approach that did not require annealing or calcination at high temperatures to produce mesoporous NPs with a size range of 37.36-71.33 nm, a specific surface area of 15.28 m2/g, and a negative surface charge of -15 mV at pH 5. The green ZnO NPs exhibited an antioxidant activity of 85.57% at 250 μg/mL and an antibacterial activity with MIC and MBC of 50 and 100 mg/mL, respectively, against both Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus. The best adsorption performance was achieved using a 4 g/L dose and pH 5, yielding, respectively, 86.77 ± 0.82% removal and 27.07 ± 0.26 mg/g adsorption capacity for CIP at 10 mg/L and 67.86 ± 3.41% and 15.88 ± 0.37 mg/g for TET at 25 mg/L. The green ZnO NPs achieved 79.71% ± 0.28 and 61.55% ± 0.53 removal of 10 mg/L CIP and 25 mg/L TET, respectively, in a spiked tap water binary system of the two contaminants. Adsorption of CIP and TET occurred mainly via electrostatic interactions, whereby CIP was bound more strongly than TET by virtue of its charge and size. The synthesis and adsorption processes were evaluated by a stepwise regression statistical model to optimize their parameters. Lastly, the green ZnO NPs were regenerated and reused for 5 cycles, indicating their functionality as simple, reusable, and low-cost adsorbents for the removal of CIP and TET from wastewater, in accordance with SDGs #6 and 12 for the sustainable management of water.

Green Synthesis of Fe-Cu Bimetallic Supported on Alginate-Limestone Nanocomposite for the Removal of Drugs from Contaminated Water

In this study Fe-Cu supported on Alginate-limestone (Fe-Cu/Alg-LS) was prepared. The increase in surface area was the main motivation for the synthesis of ternary composites. Scanning electronic microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) were used to examine the surface morphology, particle size, percentage of crystallinity, and elemental content of the resultant composite. Fe-Cu/Alg-LS was used as an adsorbent for the removal of drugs such as ciprofloxacin (CIP) and levofloxacin (LEV)from contaminated medium. The adsorption parameters were computed using kinetic and isotherm models. The maximum removal efficiency of CIP (20 ppm) and LEV (10 ppm) was found to be 97.3% and 100%, respectively. The optimal conditions were pH 6 and 7 for CIP and LEV, optimum contact time 45, 40 min for CIP and LEV, and temperature of 303 K. The pseudo-second-order model, which confirmed the chemisorption properties of the process, was the most appropriate kinetic model among the ones used, and the Langmuir model, which was the most appropriate isotherm model. Moreover, the parameters of thermodynamics were also assessed. The results imply that the synthesized nanocomposites can be used to remove hazard materials from aqueous solutions.

Synthesis and Characterization of Novel Core-Shell ZnO@SiO2 Nanoparticles and Application in Antibiotic and Bacteria Removal

A novel core-shell nanomaterial, ZnO@SiO₂, based on rice husk for antibiotic and bacteria removal, was successfully fabricated. The ZnO@SiO₂ nanoparticles were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), photoluminescence spectroscopy (PL), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) method, diffuse reflectance ultraviolet-vis (DR-UV-vis) spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Raman spectroscopy, and ζ-potential measurements. β-Lactam antibiotic amoxicillin (AMX) was removed using ZnO@SiO₂ nanoparticles with an efficiency greater than 90%, while Escherichia coli removal was higher than 91%. The optimum effective conditions for AMX removal using ZnO@SiO₂, including solution pH, adsorption time, and ZnO@SiO₂ dosage, were 8, 90 min, and 25 mg/mL, respectively. The maximum adsorption capacity reached 52.1 mg/g, much higher than those for other adsorbents. Adsorption isotherms of AMX on ZnO@SiO₂ were more in accordance with the Freundlich model than the Langmuir model. The electrostatic attraction between negative species of AMX and the positively charged ZnO@SiO₂ surface induced adsorption, while the removal of E. coli was governed by both electrostatic and hydrophobic interactions. Our study demonstrates that ZnO@SiO₂ based on rice husk is a useful core-shell nanomaterial for antibiotic and bacteria removal from water.

Highly adsorptive protein inorganic nanohybrid of Moringa seeds protein and rice husk nanosilica for effective adsorption of pharmaceutical contaminants

The present study aims to investigate adsorption characteristics and mechanisms of Moringa (MO) seeds protein on nanosilica rice husk and their applications in removal of pharmaceutical residues including the fluoroquinolone antibiotic levofloxacin (LFX) and the nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug diclofenac (DCF) in aquatic environment. Molecular weight of MO protein was determined by gel-permeation chromatography (GPC) method while its amino acids were quantified by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). The number-(M_n) and weight-average molecular weights (M_w) of MO protein were 1.53 × 10⁴ and 1.61 × 10⁴ g/mol, respectively. Different effective conditions on adsorption protein on nanosilica including contact time, pH, adsorbent dosage, and ionic strength were systematically optimized and found to be 180 min, 10, 10 mg/mL and 1 mM KCl, respectively. The surface charge change by zeta potential, surface modification by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and adsorption isotherms demonstrated that protein adsorption on nanosilica was governed by both electrostatic and non-electrostatic interactions. Application of protein functionalized nanosilica (ProFNS) in LFX and DCF removal were also thoroughly studied. The selected conditions for LFX and DCF removal using ProFNS were 1 mM KCl for both LFX and DCF; pH 8 and pH 6; contact time 90 and 120 min, and adsorption dosage 10 and 5 mg/ml for LFX and DCF, respectively. Adsorption isotherms of protein on nanosilica as well as LFX and DCF onto ProFNS at different ionic strengths were reasonably fitted by the two-step model while a pseudo-second-order model could fit adsorption kinetic well. The removal of LFX and DCF using ProFNS significantly increased from 51.51% to 87.35%, and 7.97%-50.02%, respectively. High adsorption capacities of 75.75 mg/g for LFX and 59.52 mg/g for DCF, indicate that ProFNS is a great performance for pharmaceutical residues removal in water environment.

Removal of beta-lactam antibiotic in water environment by adsorption technique using cationic surfactant functionalized nanosilica rice husk

This study aims to investigate the adsorption characteristics of cationic surfactant, cetyltrimethylamonium bromide (CTAB) onto negatively nanosilica rice husk surface and the application for antibiotic treatment in water environment. Adsorption of CTAB onto nanosilica increased with an increase of solution pH, due to an enhancement of the electrostatic attraction between cationic methylamomethylamonium groups and negatively charged nanosilica surface enhanced at higher pH. Adsorption of CTAB decreased with a decrease of ionic strength while a common intersection point (CIP) was observed for adsorption isotherm at different ionic strengths, suggesting that hydrophobic interactions between alkyl chains in CTAB molecules significantly induced adsorption and admicelles with bilayer formation were dominant than monolayer of hemimicelles. The CTAB functionalized nanosilica (CFNS) was applied for removal of beta-lactam amoxicillin (AMX). The best conditions for AMX treatment using CFNS were selected as pH 10, contact time 60 min and CFNS dosage 10 mg/mL. Removal efficiency of AMX using CFNS reached to 100% under optimum conditions while it was only 25.01% using nanosilica without CTAB. The maximum AMX adsorption capacity using CFNS of about 25 mg/g was much higher than other adsorbents. The effects of different organics such as humic acid, anionic surfactant, and other antibiotics on AMX removal using CFNS were also studied. A two-step model can fit CTAB uptake isotherms onto nanosilica and AMX onto CFNS well at different KCl concentrations. Based on the desorption of CTAB with AMX adsorption as well as adsorption isotherms, the change in surface charge and functional vibration groups after adsorption, we indicate that AMX adsorption onto CFNS was mainly controlled by electrostatic interaction. We reveal that CFNS is an excellent adsorbent for antibiotic treatment from aqueous solution.

Synthesizing and Evaluating the Photocatalytic and Antibacterial Ability of TiO2/SiO2 Nanocomposite for Silicate Coating

The TiO₂/SiO₂ nanocomposite has been synthesized by a sol-gel method and investigated the effect of the SiO₂ content (0, 5, 10, 15, 20, and 50%) on the rutile-to-anatase phase transition of TiO₂ NPs. In order to increase the photocatalytic efficiency of the nanocomposite and decrease the price of material, the TiO₂/SiO₂ Nc with content SiO₂ of 15% sample is chosen for preparing silicate coating. The efficiency of photocatalytic MB and antibacterial ability in the air of W silicate coating (adding TiO₂/SiO₂ Nc (15%)) achieve almost 100% for 60 h and 94.35% for 3 h, respectively. While the efficiency of photocatalytic MB and antibacterial ability of WO silicate coating (adding commercial TiO₂/SiO₂) is about 25–30% for 60 h and 6.02% for 3 h, respectively. The presence of TiO₂/SiO₂ Nc (15%) with a larger surface area in W silicate coating can provide increased centers for absorption, photocatalytic reaction, and the contact between sample and bacteria lead to enhance the photocatalytic and antibacterial ability of W silicate coating.

Eco-friendly rice husk pre-treatment for preparing biogenic silica: Gluconic acid and citric acid comparative study

Carboxylic acid leaching has been established eco-friendly pre-treatment method for producing biogenic silica (BSi) from rice husk. The most urgent issue is for carboxylic acid to promote new readily biodegradable acids and enhance carboxylic acid sustainability in BSi preparation. This research investigates gluconic acid (GA) applicability for biogenic silica preparation from rice husk compared with citric acid (CA). The results demonstrated that GA was preferable to CA on BSi recovery with 89.91% efficiency. Although GA leaching promoted slightly higher silica loss, the primary metal alkali impurities, such as K₂O, Na₂O, and Al₂O_3, were effectively removed at 92-93%, 89-93%, 95-97%, respectively. The combination effect of silica loss and high removal impurities resulted in lower rice husk thermal decomposition activation energy. The characteristics of BSi prepared by GA leaching were comparable with CA leaching, mainly mesoporous with 114.06 m²/g of specific surface area and 0.23 cm³/g of the pore volume. In addition, GA leaching was environmentally better than CA leaching, indicated by minor contribution to all environmental impact indices. The findings suggested that GA could be a potential replacement for prevalent carboxylic acids in BSi preparation.

Effective removal of doxycycline from aqueous solution using CuO nanoparticles decorated poly(2-acrylamido-2-methyl-1-propanesulfonic acid)/chitosan

The primary focus of the present study was to synthesize CuO nanoparticles decorated poly(2-acrylamido-2-methyl-1-propanesulfonic acid)/chitosan to explore its potential for uptake of doxycycline (DXN) from water. The composite material was characterized using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction and thermogravimetric analysis-differential thermal analysis. Central composite design under response surface methodology was opted to optimize the process variables (pH, adsorbent dosage, contact time and initial concentration of DXN) for obtaining the highest removal efficiency. The removal of DXN reached 98.84% at 303 K under the optimum conditions of pH 7.0, equilibrating time of 70 min, adsorbent dose of 20 mg/25 mL and initial concentration of 50 mg L-1. The Langmuir isotherm and pseudo-second-order kinetic models fitted best with the experimental data. The values of ΔG° (- 29.159 to - 31.997 kJ mol-1), ΔH° (56.768 kJ mol-1) and ΔS° (283.382 J mol-1 K-1) demonstrated the spontaneous and endothermic nature of adsorption process. The adsorption/desorption study revealed the reusability of the prepared composite material for DXN uptake up to six cycles.

Synthesis and surface modification of magnetic Fe3O4@SiO2 core-shell nanoparticles and its application in uptake of scandium (III) ions from aqueous media

The main objective of this work is to produce an eco-friendly and economically nano-adsorbent which can separate scandium metal ions Sc from a model aqueous phase prior to applying these adsorbents in industrial filed. The magnetic core-shell structure Fe3O4@SiO2 nanoparticles were synthesized by modified Stöber method and functionalized with (3-aminopropyl) triethoxysilane APTES as a coupling agent and ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) as a ligand. Magnetic nano support adsorbents exhibit many attractive opportunities due to their easy removal and possibility of reusing. The ligand grafting was chemically robust and does not appreciably influence the morphology or the structure of the substrate. To evaluate the potential, the prepared hybrid nanoparticles were used as nano-adsorbent for Sc ions from model aqueous solutions due to the fact that rare earth elements (REEs) have a strong affinity for oxygen and nitrogen donors. The iron oxide nanoparticles were prepared by co-precipitation method at pH 10 and pH 11 to get the best morphology and nanoscale dimensions of iron oxide magnetic nanoparticles. The particle size, morphology, specific surface area, and surface modification were characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM), and X-ray powder diffraction (XRD). The results showed that the Fe3O4 nanoparticles with average particle size of 15 ± 3 nm were successfully synthesized at pH 11, and 25 °C. Moreover, the prepared Fe3O4 nanoparticles were coated with amorphous SiO2 and functionalized with amino and carboxyl groups. The adsorption study conditions of Sc are as follows: the initial concentrations of the Sc model solution varied 10-50 mg/L, 20 mL volume, 20-80 mg of the Fe3O4@SiO2-COO adsorbent, pH range of 1-5, and 5 h contact time at 25 °C temperature. The adsorption equilibrium was represented with Langmuir, Freundlich, and Temkin isotherm models. Langmuir model was found to have the correlation coefficient value in good agreement with experimental results. However, the adsorption process followed pseudo-second-order kinetics.

Barium/Cobalt@Polyethylene Glycol Nanocomposites for Dye Removal from Aqueous Solutions

Dyes are known as one of the most dangerous industrial pollutants which can cause skin diseases, allergy, and provoke cancer and mutation in humans. Therefore, one of the important environmental issues is the effective removal of dyes from industrial wastewater. In the current work, BaFe₁₂O₁₉/CoFe₂O₄@polyethylene glycol (abbreviated as BFO/CFO@PEG) nanocomposite was synthesized and evaluated regarding its capacity for adsorptive removal of a model dye Acid Blue 92 (denoted as AB92) from aqueous solutions. The characteristics of the prepared nanocomposite was determined by tests such as X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM), vibration sample magnetization (VSM), and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The effects of conditional parameters including pH (2–12), initial concentration of dye (20–100 mg/L), adsorbent dosage (0.02–0.1 g/L) and contact time (0-180 min) on the adsorption of dye were investigated and then optimized. The results indicated that with the increase of the adsorbent dosage from 0.02 to 0.1 g/L, the removal efficiency increased from 74.1% to 78.6%, and the adsorbed amount decreased from 148.25 to 31.44 mg/g. The maximum removal efficiency (77.54%) and adsorption capacity (31.02 mg/g) were observed at pH 2. Therefore, the general optimization conditions revealed that the maximum adsorption efficiency of dye was obtained in condition of initial concentration of 20 mg/L, contact time of 1 h and pH of solution equal 2. The adsorption isotherm and kinetic data were evaluated using a series of models. The pseudo-second order kinetic model and Freundlich isotherm model show the best fitting with experimental data with R²∼0.999.

Synthesis and Characterization of Novel Hybridized CeO2@SiO2 Nanoparticles Based on Rice Husk and Their Application in Antibiotic Removal

This work aims to synthesize a core-shell material of CeO₂@SiO₂ based on rice husk as a novel hybridized adsorbent for antibiotic removal. The phase structures of CeO₂@SiO₂ and CeO₂ nanoparticles that were fabricated by a simple procedure were examined by X-ray diffraction (XRD), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), and Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, while their interfacial characterizations were performed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), the Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) method, and ζ-potential measurements. The removal efficiency of the antibiotic amoxicillin (AMX) using CeO₂@SiO₂ nanoparticles was much greater than that using SiO₂ and CeO₂ materials in solutions of different pH values. The optimum conditions for AMX removal using CeO₂@SiO₂ including contact time and adsorbent dosage were 120 min and 5 mg/mL, respectively. The maximum AMX removal using CeO₂@SiO₂ reached 100% and the adsorption capacity was 12.5 mg/g. Adsorption isotherms of AMX onto CeO₂@SiO₂ were fitted by Langmuir, Freundlich, and two-step adsorption models, while the adsorption kinetics of AMX achieved a better fit by the pseudo-second-order model than the pseudo-first-order model. The electrostatic and nonelectrostatic interactions between the zwitterionic form of AMX and the positively charged CeO₂@SiO₂ surface were controlled by adsorption. The effects of different organics such as humic acid, ionic surfactants, and pharmaceutical substances on AMX removal using CeO₂@SiO₂ were also thoroughly investigated. The high AMX removal efficiencies of about 75% after four regenerations and about 70% from an actual water sample demonstrate that CeO₂@SiO₂-based rice husk is a hybrid nanomaterial for antibiotic removal from water environments.

Determination of Sudan I and II in Food by High-Performance Liquid Chromatography after Simultaneous Adsorption on Nanosilica

Analytical techniques for analyte quantification are often complex, time-consuming, and costly. Further, samples must be carefully prepared to make them suitable for each analytical technique, thus increasing complexity and cost and often requiring toxic solvents. In this paper, we propose a simple and quick method for the pre-concentration of analytes using a nonporous adsorbent: nanosilica, which is prepared from rice husks, an ecofriendly waste material. Subsequently, analysis using high-performance liquid chromatography with a photodiode array detector was used for accurate analyte quantification. To test our method, Sudan I and II dyes were selected because these are potential carcinogens that are often used to adulterate foods because of their bright colors. Although nanosilica has been used as an adsorbent before, the adsorption of hydrophobic organic dyes has not been investigated to date. Thus, the optimal conditions for dye adsorption on nanosilica were systematically studied and found to be 1 mM KCl, pH 3.0, and an adsorption time of 120 min, and the maximum adsorption capacities of the nanosilica for Sudan I and II were 0.619 and 0.699 mg·g^-1, respectively. The adsorption of the dyes on the nanosilica is discussed in detail with respect to the surface area, functional groups, zeta potential, and adsorption isotherms. Under optimal conditions, the extraction efficiencies of Sudan I and Sudan II reached 98.3% and 92.8%, respectively, and the proposed method was applied for the analysis of several foods and achieved high recoveries (80-100%).

Remarkable enhancement of thermal stability of epoxy resin through the incorporation of mesoporous silica micro-filler

For the first time, we incorporated mesoporous micro-silica (5 μm, pore size = 50 nm) as a filler in epoxy resin aiming to enter polymer into the pore of the silica. As expected, the thermal stability of the composite increased remarkably, followed by noteworthy thermal degradation kinetics when compared to the controlled cured epoxy resin. Composites were prepared by the direct dispersion of modified nano-silica, modified mesoporous micro-silica, unmodified mesoporous micro-silica, non-porous micro-silica, and irregular micro-silica of various pore sizes as fillers in diglycidyl ether of bisphenol-A epoxy resin via ultra-sonication and shear mixing, followed by oven-curing with 4,4-diaminodiphenyl sulfone. DSC and TGA analyses demonstrated a higher glass transition temperature (increased by 3.65–5.75 °C) and very high activation energy for thermal degradation (average increase = 46.2%) was obtained for the same unmodified silica composite compared to pure epoxy, respectively.

Occurrence, fate and removal of SARS-CoV-2 in wastewater: Current knowledge and future perspectives

The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), a pandemic of global concern, is caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). Recently, many studies have documented the detection of SARS-CoV-2 in human excreta and wastewater. The presence of SARS-CoV-2 in human excreta and wastewater poses serious implications for wastewater treatment. Thus, this review aims to understand the fate of SARS-CoV-2 in the urban water cycle and its inactivation in different stages of treatment in wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) for effective control to prevent any recurrence of the outbreak. The viral load of SARS-CoV-2 in feces of individuals tested positive has been reported to be in the range of 10⁴-10⁸ copies/L depending on the infection stages. In the wastewater, dilution of feces results in the decrease of the viral load in the range of 10²-10^6.5 copies/L. Monitoring of SARS-CoV-2 in WWTP samples following the wastewater-based epidemiology (WBE) can complement real epidemiological data from clinical testing to help to monitor disease outbreaks in a community. Though promising, high uncertainty involved with the WBE technique warrants further research for reliable and quantitative information. Inactivation of SARS-CoV-2 in WWTPs depends on the operational parameters and is generally enhanced by the tertiary treatment and disinfection techniques with a higher dosage. However, the risk of SARS-CoV-2 dissemination by the treated effluent intended to be disposed of or reused in the urban water cycle needs to be assessed with respect to the extent of viral infectivity.

Adsorption Evaluation for the Removal of Nickel, Mercury, and Barium Ions from Single-Component and Mixtures of Aqueous Solutions by Using an Optimized Biobased Chitosan Derivative

In this experimental study, the use of 5-hydroxymethyl-furfural (HMF) organic compound as a grafting agent to chitosan natural polymer (CS) was examined. One optimized chitosan derivative was synthesized, and then tested (CS-HMF), in order to uptake nickel, mercury, and barium metal ions from single- and triple-component (multi-component) aqueous solutions. The characterization of the material before and after the metal uptake was achieved by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The ability of the adsorption of CS-HMF was tested at pH = 6. The adjusting of temperature from 25 to 65 °C caused the increase in the adsorption capacity. The equilibrium data were fitted to the models of Langmuir and Freundlich, while the data from kinetic experiments were fitted to pseudo-1st and pseudo-2nd order models. The best fitting was achieved for the Langmuir model (higher R²). The adsorption capacity for nickel, mercury, and barium removal at 25 °C (single component) was 147, 107, and 64 (mg/g), respectively. However, the total adsorption capacity for the multi-component was 204 mg/g. A thermodynamic study was also done, and the values of ΔG⁰, ΔH⁰, and ΔS⁰ were evaluated.

Strength of Flocs Formed by the Complexation of Lysozyme with Leonardite Humic Acid

Aggregation and aggregates properties of natural organic and nanosized macromolecules such as humic substances and proteins are crucial to explore so-called colloid-mediated transport and the fate of substances in soil and water environments. Therefore, the aggregation and dispersion, charging, and floc strength of lysozyme (LSZ)–leonardite humic acid (LHA) flocs were experimentally investigated. The experiments were performed in different salt concentrations and LSZ to LHA mass ratios as a function of pH. We obtained the stronger flocs at pH 4.4, where the isoelectric point (IEP) of the complex with the mass ratio 2.5 was confirmed. Thus, the aggregation of LSZ–LHA flocs is mainly caused by charge neutralization. We obtained the floc strength of 4.7 nN around IEP at low salt concentration of 3 mM, which was stronger than 2.8 nN in high salt concentration of 50 mM. The effect of salt concentration can be rationalized by charge-patch attraction at low salt concentration. With increasing mass ratio, the IEP shifted to higher pH. This is due to the increase in positive charge from LSZ in the mixture. The effect of the LSZ to LHA mass ratio on the maximum strength was weak in the range studied.

Adsorption Behavior of Polyelectrolyte onto Alumina and Application in Ciprofloxacin Removal

This study aims to investigate the adsorption behavior of a strong polyelectrolyte poly(styrenesulfonate) (PSS) onto alumina particles. Adsorption of PSS onto positively charged alumina surface increased with increasing ionic strength, indicating that non-electrostatic and electrostatic interaction controlled the adsorption. The removal of an emerging antibiotic ciprofloxacin (CFX) from water environment using PSS-modified alumina (PMA) was also studied. The removal of CFX using PMA was much higher than that using alumina particles without PSS modification in all pH ranges of 2–11. The removal of CFX reached 98% under the optimum conditions of pH 6, contact time of 120 min, adsorbent dosage of five milligrams per milliliter and ionic strength 10⁴-M NaCl. The adsorption isotherms of CFX at different salt concentrations fit well with a two-step adsorption model, while the adsorption kinetic fit well with a pseudo-second-order model with a good correlation coefficient (R² > 0.9969). The CFX-removal from a hospital wastewater using PMA was more than 75%. Our study demonstrates that adsorption of PSS onto alumina to modify the particle surface is important to form a novel adsorbent PMA for CFX-removal from water environments.

Polystyrene Magnetic Nanocomposites as Antibiotic Adsorbents

There are different ways for antibiotics to enter the aquatic environment, with wastewater treatment plants (WWTP) considered to be one of the main points of entrance. Even treated wastewater effluent can contain antibiotics, since WWTP cannot eliminate the presence of antibiotics. Therefore, adsorption can be a sustainable option, compared to other tertiary treatments. In this direction, a versatile synthesis of poly(styrene-block-acrylic acid) diblock copolymer/Fe3O4 magnetic nanocomposite (abbreviated as P(St-b-AAc)/Fe3O4)) was achieved for environmental applications, and particularly for the removal of antibiotic compounds. For this reason, the synthesis of the P(St-b-AAc) diblock copolymer was conducted with a reversible addition fragmentation transfer (RAFT) method. Monodisperse superparamagnetic nanocomposite with carboxylic acid groups of acrylic acid was adsorbed on the surface of Fe3O4 nanoparticles. The nanocomposites were characterized with scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM) analysis. Then, the nanoparticles were applied to remove ciprofloxacin (antibiotic drug compound) from aqueous solutions. The effects of various parameters, such as initial drug concentration, solution pH, adsorbent dosage, and contact time on the process were extensively studied. Operational parameters and their efficacy in the removal of Ciprofloxacin were studied. Kinetic and adsorption isothermal studies were also carried out. The maximum removal efficiency of ciprofloxacin (97.5%) was found at an initial concentration of 5 mg/L, pH 7, adsorbent's dosage 2 mg/L, contact time equal to 37.5 min. The initial concentration of antibiotic and the dose of the adsorbent presented the highest impact on efficiency. The adsorption of ciprofloxacin was better fitted to Langmuir isotherm (R2 = 0.9995), while the kinetics were better fitted to second-order kinetic equation (R2 = 0.9973).

Chitosan Grafted with Biobased 5-Hydroxymethyl-Furfural as Adsorbent for Copper and Cadmium Ions Removal

This work investigates the application of 5-hydroxymethyl-furfural (HMF) as a grafting agent to chitosan (CS). The material produced was further modified by cross-linking. Three different derivatives were tested with molecular ratios CS/HMF of 1:1 (CS-HMF1), 2:1 (CS-HMF2) and 10:1 mol/mol (CS-HMF3)) to remove Cu²⁺ and Cd²⁺ from aqueous solutions. CS-HMF derivatives were characterized both before, and after, metal ions adsorption by using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), as well as Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and X-Ray diffraction analysis (XRD). The CS-HMF derivatives were tested at pH = 5 and showed higher adsorption capacity with the increase of temperature. Also, the equilibrium data were fitted to Langmuir (best fitting) and Freundlich model, while the kinetic data to pseudo-first (best fitting) and pseudo-second order equations. The Langmuir model fitted better (higher R²) the equilibrium data than the Freundlich equation. By increasing the HMF grafting from 130% (CS-HMF1) to 310% (CS-HMF3), an increase of 24% (26 m/g) was observed for Cu²⁺ adsorption and 19% (20 mg/g) for Cd²⁺. By increasing from T = 25 to 65 °C, an increase of the adsorption capacity (metal uptake) was observed. Ten reuse cycles were successfully carried out without significant loss of adsorption ability. The reuse potential was higher of Cd²⁺, but more stable desorption reuse ability during all cycles for Cu²⁺.

Study on Adsorption and Aggregation in the Mixed System of Polyacrylamide, Cu(II) Ions and Innovative Carbon-Silica Composite

The paper presents an original study on adsorption and aggregation phenomena in a mixed system consisting of a macromolecular compound, heavy metal ions and an innovative adsorbent. The authors used ionic polyacrylamides (PAM), Cu(II) ions and carbon–silica composite (C-SiO₂) in the experiments. Such a system has not yet been described in the literature and therefore, the article is of significant novelty and great importance. The composite was prepared by mixing phenol–formaldehyde resin with silica and pyrolysis at 800 °C. The adsorbed amounts of Cu(II) ions and PAM were determined spectrophotometrically. C-SiO₂ was characterized using potentiometric titration, microelecrophoresis and Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) analysis. In turn, the C-SiO₂ aggregation was established turbidimetrically as well as using a particle size analyzer. The obtained results indicated that both Cu(II) ions and ionic polyacrylamide were adsorbed on the composite surface at pH 6. The highest noted adsorbed amounts were 9.8 mg/g for Cu(II) and 35.72 mg/g for CT PAM-25%. Cu(II) ions increased the anionic PAM adsorbed and reduced the cationic PAM one. The adsorption of anionic PAM (50 ppm) stimulated the solid aggregation significantly. What is more, Cu(II) ions enhanced this process. The size of particles/aggregates formed without additives equaled 0.44 μm, whereas in the mixed Cu(II)/AN PAM system, they were even at 1.04 μm.

Constructed Wetland Revealed Efficient Sulfamethoxazole Removal but Enhanced the Spread of Antibiotic Resistance Genes

Constructed wetlands (CWs) could achieve high removal efficiency of antibiotics, but probably stimulate the spread of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs). In this study, four CWs were established to treat synthetic wastewater containing sulfamethoxazole (SMX). SMX elimination efficiencies, SMX degradation mechanisms, dynamic fates of ARGs, and bacterial communities were evaluated during the treatment period (360 day). Throughout the whole study, the concentration of SMX in the effluent gradually increased (p < 0.05), but in general, the removal efficiency of SMX remained at a very high level (>98%). In addition, the concentration of SMX in the bottom layer was higher compared with that in the surface layer. The main byproducts of SMX degradation were found to be 4-amino benzene sulfinic acid, 3-amino-5-methylisoxazole, benzenethiol, and 3-hydroxybutan-1-aminium. Temporally speaking, an obvious increase of sul genes was observed, along with the increase of SMX concentration in the bottom and middle layers of CWs. Spatially speaking, the concentration of sul genes increased from the surface layer to the bottom layer.
