Interpretation and Physical Meaning of Kinetic Parameters Obtained from Isoconversional Kinetic Analysis of Polymers

Mussel-inspired polydopamine modified mica with enhanced mechanical strength and thermal performance of poly(lactic acid) coating

Polylactic acid (PLA), as a green functional polymer, has been useful in various coating applications. However, due to the low mechanical strength and thermal stability of PLA, it needs to be improved in order to expand its application areas. In this work, a series of polylactic acid (PLA) nanocomposite films were prepared through introducing polydopamine-modified mica (PDA@MICA) as a self-assemble nanofiller to enhance its mechanical and thermal properties. The results demonstrated that PLA/PDA@MICA shows excellent mechanical properties. Tensile tests showed that PLA/PDA@MICA exhibits a 58.3 % increase in tensile strength and a 16.8 % increase in Young's modulus compared to pure PLA. Meanwhile, thermal performance testing shown the introduction of PDA@MICA led to an increase in crystallinities (Xc = 24.78 %). And the thermal decomposition temperature of PLA/PDA@MICA film (374 °C) was slightly higher than that of PLA film (367 °C). The simultaneous improvement of the mechanical and thermal properties was attributed to the formation of hydrogen bonds between PLA and PDA@MICA. In addition, the parallel arrangement of PDA@MICA and PLA macromolecular chains forms a unique "brick and mortar" structure in the coating, which enhances the mechanical properties of PLA/PDA@MICA composite coatings. This study reports a successful approach to simultaneously address the drawbacks of PLA, specifically its low thermal stability and mechanical strength, thereby promoting its widespread application in the coatings industry.

Unravelling the thermal behavior and kinetics of unsaturated polyester resin supplemented with organo-nanoclay

The integration of nanoclays within polymeric systems to develop high-performance materials is an emerging research field that has garnered significant attention. In this context, an organically modified montmorillonite (OMMT) is utilized as a reinforcing agent for unsaturated polyester resin (UPR) with loads of 1%, 3%, and 5 wt%. The modification of montmorillonite nanoclay (MMT) using a quaternary ammonium compound is performed through an effective repetitive modification process under reflux conditions. The curing behavior of the unsaturated polyester resin containing organically modified clay catalyzed with methyl ethyl ketone peroxide (MEKP) initiator and promoted by cobalt naphthenate accelerator is investigated using dynamic differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) followed by kinetic analysis using isoconversional methods. The dynamic DSC curing curves showed a bimodal exothermic peak, where two independent reactions, namely, redox and thermal decomposition of the initiator occurred. In this study, novel insights into the curing reaction of the studied UPR and UPR/OMMT systems have been revealed through the application of the Trache-Abdelaziz-Siwani (TAS) and Sbirrazzuoli (VYA/CE) isoconversional methods. These methods have enabled the elucidation of the intricate mechanisms and phenomena that impact the curing reaction, including the dilution effect in the redox reaction and the diffusion phenomenon at the end of the thermal decomposition reaction. The incorporation of nanoclay into unsaturated polyester resin (UPR) resulted in a reduction in the activation energy for both the redox and thermal reactions. Specifically, the energetic barrier decreased from 93.85 and 101.58 kJ mol-1 for pristine UPR to 60.71 and 72.93 kJ mol-1 for UPR/OMMT-5 in the redox and thermal reactions, respectively. The addition of OMMT caused a significant decrease in the pre-exponential factor. The values of UPR/OMMT-5 were 2.75 × 105 and 5.50 × 106 for the redox and thermal decomposition reactions, respectively, compared to 1.41 × 1012 and 5.13 × 1013 for UPR. The thermogravimetric analysis demonstrated that UPR/OMMT systems were more stable than UPR.

Circular and Linear Dichroism for the Analysis of Small Noncoding RNA Properties

Useful structural information about the conformation of nucleic acids can be quickly acquired by circular and linear dichroism (CD/LD) spectroscopy. These techniques, rely on the differential absorption of polarised light and are indeed extremely sensitive to subtle changes in the structure of chiral biomolecules. Many CD analyses of DNA or DNA:protein complexes have been conducted with substantial data acquisitions. Conversely, CD RNA analysis are still scarce, despite the fact that RNA plays a wide cellular function. This chapter seeks to introduce the reader to the use of circular, linear dichroism and in particular the use of Synchrotron Radiation for such samples. The use of these techniques on small noncoding RNA (sRNA) will be exemplified by analyzing changes in base stacking and/or helical parameters for the understanding of sRNA structure and function, especially by translating the dynamics of RNA:RNA annealing but also to access RNA stability or RNA:RNA alignment. The effect of RNA remodeling proteins will also be addressed. These analyses are especially useful to decipher the mechanisms by which sRNA will adopt the proper conformation thanks to the action of proteins such as Hfq or ProQ in the regulation of the expression of their target mRNAs.

Kinetic Study of the Effective Thermal Polymerization of a Prebiotic Monomer: Aminomalononitrile

Aminomalononitrile (AMN), the HCN formal trimer, is a molecule of interest in prebiotic chemistry, in fine organic synthesis, and, currently, in materials science, mainly for bio-applications. Herein, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) measurements by means of non-isothermal experiments of the stable AMN p-toluenesulfonate salt (AMNS) showed successful bulk AMN polymerization. The results indicated that this thermally stimulated polymerization is initiated at relatively low temperatures, and an autocatalytic kinetic model can be used to appropriately describe, determining the kinetic triplet, including the activation energy, the pre-exponential factor, and the mechanism function (E_α, A and f(α)). A preliminary structural characterization, by means of Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, supported the effective generation of HCN-derived polymers prepared from AMNS. This study demonstrated the autocatalytic, highly efficient, and straightforward character of AMN polymerization, and to the best of our knowledge, it describes, for the first time, a systematic and extended kinetic analysis for gaining mechanistic insights into this process. The latter was accomplished through the help of simultaneous thermogravimetry (TG)-DSC and the in situ mass spectrometry (MS) technique for investigating the gas products generated during these polymerizations. These analyses revealed that dehydrocyanation and deamination processes must be important elimination reactions involved in the complex AMN polymerization mechanism.

The invasive Egeria densa macrophyte and its potential as a new renewable energy source: A study of degradation kinetics and thermodynamic parameters

The increase in global demand, along with environmental concerns, has led to the need for new sources that can supply the energy needed for socioeconomic development while reducing pollutant emissions. Aquatic biomasses, especially those of invasive aquatic macrophytes, can be potential energy sources, and this study evaluated the thermal degradation of the invasive Egeria densa macrophytes (EDM) in an inert environment at four heating rates to evaluate its potential as a low-cost biomass and bioenergy source. Pyrolysis experiments were performed using a thermogravimetric analyzer. The thermal profile of invasive EDM has three main events (multiple stages). Stages (i) and (ii) occur at a temperature range of 125-395 °C and represent the decomposition of carbohydrates such as hemicellulose and cellulose. Stage (iii) occurs between 395 and 500 °C and mainly relates to the decomposition of lignin. Thermal data have been used to analyze kinetic parameters through isoconversional methods, and the activation energy (E_a) value of EDM showed variation at different conversion points. The highest E_a values were observed for conversion rates of 0.3-0.6 due to the increased energy required to break down the lignocellulosic chains during decomposition. The small difference between the enthalpy change and E_a values for the different isoconversional methods can be due to a small potential energy barrier, which reflects the feasibility that the reaction can occur under the expected conditions. Gibbs free energy (137-145 kJ mol^-1) and high heating value (13.40 MJ/kg) revealed a significant bioenergy potential for EDM biomass.

Curing and Molecular Dynamics Simulation of MXene/Phenolic Epoxy Composites with Different Amine Curing Agent Systems

Herein, the curing kinetics and the glass transition temperature (T_g) of MXene/phenolic epoxy composites with two curing agents, i.e., 4,4-diaminodiphenyl sulfone (DDS) and dicyandiamine (DICY), are systematically investigated using experimental characterization, mathematical modeling and molecular dynamics simulations. The effect of MXene content on an epoxy resin/amine curing agent system is also studied. These results reveal that the MXene/epoxy composites with both curing agent systems conform to the SB(m,n) two-parameter autocatalytic model. The addition of MXene accelerated the curing of the epoxy composite and increased the T_g by about 20 K. In addition, molecular dynamics were used to simulate the T_g of the cross-linked MXene/epoxy composites and to analyze microstructural features such as the free volume fraction (FFV). The simulation results show that the introduction of MXene improves the T_g and FFV of the simulated system. This is because the introduction of MXene restricts the movement of the epoxy/curing agent system. The conclusions are in good agreement with the experimental results.

Thermal Kinetics of Monocationic and Dicationic Pyrrolidinium-Based Ionic Liquids

This work presents an in-depth kinetic thermal degradation comparison between traditional monocationic and the newly developed dicationic ionic liquid (IL), both coupled with a bromide (Br⁻) anion by using non-isothermal thermogravimetric analysis. Thermal analyses of 1-butyl-1-methylpyrrolidinium bromide [C₄MPyr][Br] and 1,4-bis(1-methylpyrrolidinium-1-yl)butane dibromide [BisC₄MPyr][Br₂] were conducted at a temperature range of 50–650 °C and subjected to various heating rates, which are 5, 10, 15, 20 and 25 °C/min. Thermogravimetric analysis revealed that dicationic IL, [BisC₄MPyr][Br₂] is less thermally stable compared to monocationic [C₄MPyr][Br]. A detailed analysis of kinetic parameters, which are the activation energy (E_a) and pre-exponential factor (log A), was calculated by using Kissinger-Akahira-Sunose (KAS), Flynn-Wall-Ozawa (FWO) and Starink. This study revealed that the average E_a and log A of [BisC₄MPyr][Br₂] are lower than [C₄MPyr][Br], which may be contributed to by its low thermal stability. Conclusively, it proved that the E_a and log A of ILs are strongly related to the thermal stability of ILs.

Pyrolysis of de-oiled yeast biomass of Rhodotorula mucilaginosa IIPL32: Kinetics and thermodynamic parameters using thermogravimetric analysis

The increasing demand for natural resources has highlighted the need to search for unutilized carbon resource that satisfy the demand and pose a minor threat to the environment. Yeast is a microbe with large industrial applications, and the biomass leftover after fermentation needs utilization for achieving increased efficiency. De-oiled yeast biomass (DYB), the residue after yeast lipid extraction, has not yet been evaluated for its potential application in the pyrolysis process. The present study was performed to understand its detailed pyrolysis kinetics. The observed activation energy (87-216 KJ/mol), random nucleation mechanism, pre-exponential factor (7.87 × 10³¹-3.24 × 10³¹/min), and thermodynamic profile showed the DYB pyrolysis process to be feasible. .

Novel methacrylate copolymers functionalized with fluoroarylamide; copolymerization kinetics, thermal stability and antimicrobial properties

In the first step of this study, 2-oxo-2-[(2,4,6-trifluorophenyl)amino]ethyl-2-methylprop-2-enoate(OTFAMA) monomer was synthesized and characterized. Then, a series copolymers were obtained by free-radical copolymerization method of OTFAMA and glycidyl methacrylate (GMA), which is a commercial monomer at 65 °C in 1,4-dioxane solvent. Structural characterizations of synthesized monomer and copolymers were carried out using FTIR, ¹H-¹³C-NMR instruments. The composition of the copolymers was estimated by elemental analysis. The reactivity ratios (r₁ and r₂) were obtained from the various linear graphical methods. The values of r₁ (OTFAMA) = 0.33 and r₂ (GMA) = 0.45 were found from the same graphical methods. The thermal behaviors of all the polymers have been investigated using the differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and the thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). A kinetic study of the thermal decompostion of copolymers was investigated using thermogravimetric analyzer with non-isothermal methods selected for analyzing solid-state kinetics data. The average activation energy values were calculated via Kissinger and Ozawa models in a period of α = 0.10-0.80. Photo stability of the copolymers was investigated. Also, the biological activity of the copolymers against different bacterial and fungal species has been investigated.

New insensitive high-energy dense biopolymers from giant reed cellulosic fibers: their synthesis, characterization, and non-isothermal decomposition kinetics

Renewable giant reed has been explored for the first time to develop new advanced high-energy dense biopolymers through carbamate surface functionalization and nitration of native cellulose and cellulose microcrystals.
