Directionally-Grown Carboxymethyl Cellulose/Reduced Graphene Oxide Aerogel with Excellent Structure Stability and Adsorption Capacity

Strong, tough, conductive and transparent nanocellulose hydrogel based on Ca2+-induced cross-linked double-networks and its adsorption of methylene blue dye

A novel multi-performance SHNC/SA/CaCl2 hydrogel with multi-performance was prepared via ultra-low-temperature freeze-thaw cycling and Ca2+ cross-linking for the removal of methylene blue (MB) from industrial wastewater. Various methods were used to characterize the structure and properties of hydrogel, and the internal structure of hydrogel showed a three-dimensional network with hydrogen and ester bonds. The SHNC/SA/CaCl2-15 hydrogel exhibited the highest tensile properties (elongation = 800 %), viscoelasticity (90 kPa), compressive strength (0.45 MPa), tensile strength (0.47 MPa) and ionic conductivity (4.34 S/cm). The maximum adsorption capacity of 2 g SHNC/SA/CaCl2-15 hydrogel was 608.49 mg/g at 40 °C, pH = 8 and adsorption 24 h. The adsorption process of hydrogel toward MB was more consistent with the second-order kinetic model and Langmuir isothermal adsorption model. According to the Langmuir isotherm model, the maximum monolayer adsorption capacity of SHNC/SA/CaCl2-15 hydrogel toward MB can reach 613.88 mg/g. Finally, it was found that the removal rate of SHNC/SA/CaCl2-15 hydrogel for MB was still as high as 90 % after five cycles of the adsorption-desorption test, and it could be reused. The hydrogel can be used as cheap and reusable adsorption material for cationic dyes. Our study provides a new perspective for the development of multifunctional cellulose hydrogel adsorbent materials.

Probing capping mechanisms and polymer matrix loading of biogenic vaterite CaCO3-Ag hybrid through X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS)

Despite extensive research in the literature, the synthesis of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) via capping mechanisms remains incompletely understood. This study employs a mechanistic approach to unravel the underlying molecular interactions driving the capping process of biogenic vaterite CaCO3-Ag and explores their interactions with different polymer matrices. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) was used to reveal the capping mechanisms, surface composition alterations, and vaterite polymorph transitions. The oxidation states of AgNPs exhibited distinct changes under different capping agents. The Ag3d spin-orbit splitting profiles revealed the coexistence of Ag+ and Ag0 within CaCO3-Ag, with a significant presence of Ag0 when poly(sodium 4-styrene sulfonate) was employed as the capping agent. Conversely, the use of carboxy methyl cellulose as the capping agent resulted in Ag+ dominance. XPS analysis illuminated the transformation of CaCO3 polymorphs from calcite to vaterite structure, which remained stable following embedding within polymer matrices. Integrating CaCO3-Ag microspheres into polymer matrices and investigating their surface characteristics represents a strategic step toward tailoring material properties for potential applications in active packaging and biomedicine.

Processes occurring in the NaCMC/glauconite suspension under the cold plasma treatment. Influence of plasma on adsorptive and stabilizing properties of the system

The paper presents the studies on the processes at the interface of the colloidal suspensions composed of clay mineral - glauconite (GT) and polysaccharide - sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (NaCMC) with the cold plasma treatment (CPT). The surface composition and chemical binding in NaCMC and GT changes are determined by means of FTIR and XPS (both methods detected the incorporation of oxygen-related functional groups). Moreover, the additional information about both the textural properties and morphological changes on the surfaces before and after CPT are studied using the BET, CHN, SEM HRTEM and STEM-EDS methods. The elemental mapping and scanning electron microscope imaging confirmed the NaCMC adsorption on GT (carbon mapping) and proved the GT surface lost its "house of card structure" after the CPT. As follows the CPT causes the protonation of NaCMC and the polymer cross-linking whereas the GT sample is more oxidized. Moreover, it was found that a significant improvement in the GT/NaCMC system stability and the NaCMC adsorption on the GT surface were a result of the CPT. The obtained data could be used for the colloidal stability of polymer/solid suspensions, thus providing new opportunities for the chemical industry; particularly for preparation of new functionalized materials.

Development of carboxymethyl cellulose-graphene oxide biobased composite for the removal of methylene blue cationic dye model contaminate from wastewater

Utilizing Glutaraldehyde crosslinked sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC-GA) hydrogel and its nanographene oxide composite (CMC-GA-GOx), an effective carboxymethyl cellulose-graphene oxide biobased composites adsorbent was developed for the adsorption removal of methylene blue (MB) cationic dye contaminate from industrial wastewater. The CMC-GA-GOx composites developed were characterized using FTIR, RAMAN, TGA, SEM, and EDX analysis instruments. Through batch experiments, several variables affecting the removal of MB dye, including the biocomposites GO:CMC composition, adsorption time, pH and temperature, initial MB concentration, adsorbent dosage, and NaCl concentration, were investigated under different conditions. The maximum dye removal percentages ranged between 93 and 98%. They were obtained using biocomposites CMC-GA-GO102 with 20% GO weight percent, adsorption time 25 min, adsorption temperature 25 °C, MB concentrations 10-30 ppm, adsorption pH 7.0, and 0.2 g adsorbent dose. The experimental data of the adsorption process suit the Langmuir isotherm more closely with a maximal monolayer adsorption capacity of 76.92 mg/g. The adsorption process followed the kinetic model of pseudo-second order. The removal of MB was exothermic and spontaneous from a thermodynamic standpoint. In addition, thermodynamic results demonstrated that adsorption operates most effectively at low temperatures. Finally, the reusability of the developed CMC-GA-GO102 has been proved through 10 successive cycles where only 14% of the MB dye removal percentage was lost. These results suggest that the developed CMC-GA-GO102 composite may be an inexpensive and reusable adsorbent for removing organic cationic dyes from industrial wastewater.

Template-directed growth of sustainable carboxymethyl cellulose-based aerogels decorated with ZIF-67 for activation peroxymonosulfate degradation of organic dyes

A novel 3D advanced oxidation catalyst ZIF-67@C-CMC/rGO based on carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) and reduced graphene oxide (rGO) was successfully synthesized by facile in-situ growth of Zeolitic imidazolate framework-67 (ZIF-67). C-CMC/rGO aerogel crosslinked by poly (methyl vinyl ether-alt-maleic acid)/polyethylene glycol system (PMVEMA/PEG) as the host material was prepared through a template-directed growth model and exhibited outstanding mechanical properties. The sustainable composite was successfully used as an efficient catalyst for activating peroxymonosulfate (PMS) to generate SO₄^-· and ·OH, then leads to the removal of organic contaminants. As a result, almost 100 % of 10 ppm MB/RhB solution can be degraded within 5 min due to the combination of catalyst aerogel and PMS. What's more, the aerogel showed a wide pH tolerance range from 4 to 9 and maintained up to 93 % of the contaminant removal rate compared to the initial value after four cycles. The ZIF-67@C-CMC/rGO aerogel with high load rate and excellent catalytic degradation performance not only solved the problem of dispersion and recovery of ZIF-67 particles, but also provided a new idea for the compound wastewater purification in sulfate radical-based advanced oxidation processes (SR-AOPs).

Graphene oxide modified with carboxymethyl cellulose for high adsorption capacities towards Nd(III) and Ce(III) from aqueous solutions

This work addresses a simple method to functionalize graphene oxide with sodium carboxymethyl cellulose using tetraethyl orthosilicate as a linker for rapid and significant removal of Nd(III) and Ce(III) from aqueous solutions. The prepared composite (GO–CMC) was characterized by different techniques to confirm the modification and adsorption process. The sorption performance of the GO–CMC was evaluated using Nd(III) and Ce(III) as absorbent materials. The experimental results demonstrated that the sorption process was excellently fitted by the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. The adsorption results were also analyzed by different isotherm models. According to the Langmuir isotherm model, the experimental sorption capacities at pH 3.0 was 661.21 and 436.55 mg/g for Nd(III) and Ce(III), respectively. The thermodynamic results indicated that the sorption process of the two examined metal ions was endothermic and spontaneous. The regenerated GO–CMC composite has a similar removal percentage to the original composite. These results confirmed that the prepared composite (GO–CMC) could be used as an effective adsorbent for Nd(III) and Ce(III) from certain multielement solutions.

Preparation of Bio-Based Aerogel and Its Adsorption Properties for Organic Dyes

The effective utilization of biomass and the purification of dye wastewater are urgent problems. In this study, a biomass aerogel (CaCO3@starch/polyacrylamide/TEMPO-oxidized nanocellulose, CaCO3@STA/PAM/TOCN) was prepared by combining nanocellulose with starch and introducing calcium carbonate nanoparticles, which exhibited a rich three-dimensional layered porous structure with a very light mass. Starch and nanocellulose can be grafted onto the molecular chain of acrylamide, while calcium carbonate nanopores can make the gel pore size uniform and have excellent swelling properties. Here, various factors affecting the adsorption behavior of this aerogel, such as pH, contact time, ambient temperature, and initial concentration, are investigated. From the kinetic data, it can be obtained that the adsorption process fits well with the pseudo-second-order. The Langmuir isotherm model can fit the equilibrium data well. The thermodynamic data also demonstrated the spontaneous and heat-absorbing properties of anionic and cationic dyes on CaCO3@STA/PAM/TOCN aerogels. The adsorption capacity of Congo red (CR) and methylene blue (MB) by CaCO3@STA/PAM/TOCN was 277.76 mg/g and 101.01 mg/g, respectively. Therefore, cellulose and starch-based aerogels can be considered promising adsorbents for the treatment of dye wastewater.

Constructing Cellulose Diacetate Aerogels with Pearl-Necklace-like Skeleton Networking Structure

Cellulose and its derivative aerogels have attracted much attention due to their renewable and biodegradable properties. However, the significant shrinkage in the supercritical drying process causes the relatively high thermal conductivity and low mechanical property of cellulose and its derivatives aerogels. Considering the pearl-necklace-like skeleton network of silica aerogels, which can improve thermal insulation property and mechanical property. Herein, we propose a new strategy for fabricating cellulose diacetate aerogels (CDAAs) with pearl-necklace-like skeletons by using tert-butanol (TBA) as exchange solvent after experiencing the freezing-drying course. CDAAs obtained have the low density of 0.09 g cm^-3, the nanopore size in the range of 10-40 nm, the low thermal conductivity of 0.024 W m^-1 K^-1 at ambient conditions, and the excellent mechanical properties (0.18 MPa at 3% strain, 0.38 MPa at 5% strain). Ultimately, CDAAs with moderate mechanical property paralleled to cellulose-derived aerogels obtained from supercritical drying process are produced, only simultaneously owning the radial shrinkage of 6.2%. The facile method for fabricating CDAAs could provide a new reference for constructing cellulose/cellulose-derived aerogels and other biomass aerogels.

Nanocellulose-Graphene Derivative Hybrids: Advanced Structure-Based Functionality from Top-down Synthesis to Bottom-up Assembly

There is an emerging endeavor of advanced structure-based functionality in the next-generation advanced functional materials inspired by hierarchical architecture for future technical applications. This review provides an impressive range roadmap for constructing advanced functional materials based on the nanocellulose-graphene derivative hybrids, from the top-down synthesis of their hierarchical materials to the bottom-up assembly of their nanoscale building blocks. First, the roadmap started from the top-down synthesis routes of nanocellulose-graphene hierarchical materials into their derivatives, where the pristine properties of nanoscale building blocks are still accessible and processable. Then, the stable-strong synergistic interfacial interactions between nanocellulose chains and graphene derivative nanosheets are uniquely well-suited in this roadmap for constructing scalable hybrid materials with interesting emergent properties. After that, the roadmap presented the bottom-up assembly approaches of these versatile nanoscale building blocks through self-assembly, templating, and mimicking of the bioinspired hierarchical structures toward advanced functional materials. Thereafter, toward understanding the specificity, superiority, and functionality of such hybrid materials, the roadmap discussed the properties and potential applications so far. Finally, the roadmap pointed out the key challenges and future outlooks, paving the way for comprehensive understanding and ideal designing of hybrid structures from nanocellulose and graphene derivatives.

Porous Aerogels and Adsorption of Pollutants from Water and Air: A Review

Aerogels are open, three-dimensional, porous materials characterized by outstanding properties, such as low density, high porosity, and high surface area. They have been used in various fields as adsorbents, catalysts, materials for thermal insulation, or matrices for drug delivery. Aerogels have been successfully used for environmental applications to eliminate toxic and harmful substances-such as metal ions or organic dyes-contained in wastewater, and pollutants-including aromatic or oxygenated volatile organic compounds (VOCs)-contained in the air. This updated review on the use of different aerogels-for instance, graphene oxide-, cellulose-, chitosan-, and silica-based aerogels-provides information on their various applications in removing pollutants, the results obtained, and potential future developments.

Recent Progress in Polysaccharide Aerogels: Their Synthesis, Application, and Future Outlook

Porous polysaccharides have recently attracted attention due to their porosity, abundance, and excellent properties such as sustainability and biocompatibility, thereby resulting in their numerous applications. Recent years have seen a rise in the number of studies on the utilization of polysaccharides such as cellulose, chitosan, chitin, and starch as aerogels due to their unique performance for the fabrication of porous structures. The present review explores recent progress in porous polysaccharides, particularly cellulose and chitosan, including their synthesis, application, and future outlook. Since the synthetic process is an important aspect of aerogel formation, particularly during the drying step, the process is reviewed in some detail, and a comparison is drawn between the supercritical CO2 and freeze drying processes in order to understand the aerogel formation of porous polysaccharides. Finally, the current applications of polysaccharide aerogels in drug delivery, wastewater, wound dressing, and air filtration are explored, and the limitations and outlook of the porous aerogels are discussed with respect to their future commercialization.
