Polyelectrolyte-Surfactant Complex Nanofibrous Membranes for Antibacterial Applications

Polyelectrolyte-surfactant complexes (PESCs) have garnered significant attention due to their extensive range of biological and industrial applications. Most present applications are predominantly used in liquid or emulsion states, which limits their efficacy in solid material-based applications. Herein, pre-hydrolyzed polyacrylonitrile (HPAN) and quaternary ammonium salts (QAS) are employed to produce PESC electrospun membranes via electrospinning. The formation process of PESCs in a solution is observed. The results show that the degree of PAN hydrolysis and the varying alkyl chain lengths of surfactants affect the rate of PESC formation. Moreover, PESCs/PCL hybrid electrospun membranes are fabricated, and their antibacterial activities against both Gram-negative Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Gram-positive Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) are investigated. The resulting electrospun membranes exhibit high bactericidal efficacy, which enables them to serve as candidates for future biomedical and filtration applications.

Electrospinning Photocatalysis Meet In Situ Irradiated XPS: Recent Mechanisms Advances and Challenges

Producing solar fuels over photocatalysts under light irradiation is a considerable way to alleviate energy crises and environmental pollution. To develop the yields of solar fuels, photocatalysts with broad light absorption, fast charge carrier migration, and abundant reaction sites need to be designed. Electrospun 1D nanofibers with large specific areas and high porosity have been widely used in the efficient production of solar fuels. Nevertheless, it is challenging to do in-depth mechanism research on electrospun nanofiber-based photocatalysts since there are multiple charge transfer routes and various reaction sites in these systems. Here, the basic principles of electrospinning and photocatalysis are systemically discussed. Then, the different roles of electrospun nanofibers played in recent research to boost photocatalytic efficiency are highlighted. It is noteworthy that the working principles and main advantages of in situ irradiated photoelectron spectroscopy (ISI-XPS), a new technique to investigate migration routes of charge carriers and identify active sites in electrospun nanofibers based photocatalysts, are summarized for the first time. At last, a brief summary on the future orientation of photocatalysts based on electrospun nanofibers as well as the perspectives on the development of the ISI-XPS technique are also provided.

Laccase immobilized on nanocomposites for wastewater pollutants degradation: current status and future prospects

The bio-enzyme degradation technology is a promising approach to sustainably remove pollution in the water and laccase is one of the most widely used enzymes in this area. Nevertheless, the further industrial application of laccase is limited by low stability, short service, low reusability and high price. The immobilization technology can significantly improve the stability and reusability of enzymes and thus promoting their industrial applications. Nanocomposite materials have been developed and applied in the efficient immobilization of laccase due to their superior physical, chemical, and biological performance. This paper presents a comprehensive review of various nanocomposite immobilization methods for laccase and the consequent changes in enzymatic properties post-immobilization. Additionally, a comprehensive analysis is conducted on the factors that impact laccase immobilization and its water removal efficiency. Furthermore, this review examines the effectiveness of common contaminants' removal mechanisms while summarizing and discussing issues related to laccase immobilization on nanocomposite carriers. This review aims to provide valuable guidance for enhancing laccase immobilization efficiency and enzymatic water pollutant removal.

Assessment of the Wanyu River (China) based on a water, sediment and hydrobiont framework

Due to the striving for the development of economy and agriculture, anthropogenic activities in many countries dramatically alter natural hydrology. These activities are primarily responsible for river deterioration. Thus, we need to assess the river environment and take measures for remediation. According to the survey data, the study identified the critical factors causing water quality deterioration and evaluated the aquatic biodiversity in the Wanyu River. First, based on the monitoring data of water (dissolved oxygen (DO), chemical oxygen demand (COD), total phosphorus (TP), and ammonia nitrogen (NH3-N)), sediment (copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), lead (Pb), arsenic (As), nickel (Ni), mercury (Hg), cadmium (Cd), and chromium (Cr)), and aquatic biodiversity (fish and hydrophyte), the study identified the critical factors causing river quality deterioration. Second, the study provided some recommendations that would consolidate the restoration efforts. Consequently, because of the government's efforts in building the municipal sewage treatment plant, dredging, and other measures, the river environment improved during the 2020-2021 period. The maximum concentrations of COD, NH3-N, and TP in water were reduced by 17.76%, 26.17%, and 20.93%, respectively. The sediment had no risk of heavy metal pollution in the past 2 years. And we could utilize sludge as garden soil or compost resource. However, reducing agricultural pollution, internal nutrient loading, and cost-effective restoration and evaluation represent significant challenges in the efforts to recover the river ecosystem.

Electrospun Nanofiber Membranes with Various Structures for Wound Dressing

Electrospun nanofiber membranes (NFMs) have high porosity and a large specific surface area, which provide a suitable environment for the complex and dynamic wound healing process and a large number of sites for carrying wound healing factors. Further, the design of the nanofiber structure can imitate the structure of the human dermis, similar to the natural extracellular matrix, which better promotes the hemostasis, anti-inflammatory and healing of wounds. Therefore, it has been widely studied in the field of wound dressing. This review article overviews the development of electrospinning technology and the application of electrospun nanofibers in wound dressings. It begins with an introduction to the history, working principles, and transformation of electrospinning, with a focus on the selection of electrospun nanofiber materials, incorporation of functional therapeutic factors, and structural design of nanofibers and nanofiber membranes. Moreover, the wide application of electrospun NFMs containing therapeutic factors in wound healing is classified based on their special functions, such as hemostasis, antibacterial and cell proliferation promotion. This article also highlights the structural design of electrospun nanofibers in wound dressing, including porous structures, bead structures, core-shell structures, ordered structures, and multilayer nanofiber membrane structures. Finally, their advantages and limitations are discussed, and the challenges faced in their application for wound dressings are analyzed to promote further research in this field.

Fabrication of CuO-NP-Doped PVDF Composites Based Electrospun Triboelectric Nanogenerators for Wearable and Biomedical Applications

A flexible and portable triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) based on electrospun polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) doped with copper oxide (CuO) nanoparticles (NPs, 2, 4, 6, 8, and 10 wt.-% w.r.t. PVDF content) was fabricated. The structural and crystalline properties of the as-prepared PVDF-CuO composite membranes were characterized using SEM, FTIR, and XRD. To fabricate the TENG device, the PVDF-CuO was considered a tribo-negative film and the polyurethane (PU) a counter-positive film. The output voltage of the TENG was analyzed using a custom-made dynamic pressure setup, under a constant load of 1.0 kgf and 1.0 Hz frequency. The neat PVDF/PU showed only 1.7 V, which further increased up to 7.5 V when increasing the CuO contents from 2 to 8 wt.-%. A decrease in output voltage to 3.9 V was observed for 10 wt.-% CuO. Based on the above results, further measurements were carried out using the optimal sample (8 wt.-% CuO). Its output voltage performance was evaluated as a function of varying load (1 to 3 kgf) and frequency (0.1 to 1.0 Hz) conditions. Finally, the optimized device was demonstrated in real-time wearable sensor applications, such as human motion and health-monitoring applications (respiration and heart rate).

Overview of Electrospinning for Tissue Engineering Applications

Tissue engineering (TE) is an emerging field of study that incorporates the principles of biology, medicine, and engineering for designing biological substitutes to maintain, restore, or improve tissue functions with the goal of avoiding organ transplantation. Amongst the various scaffolding techniques, electrospinning is one of the most widely used techniques to synthesise a nanofibrous scaffold. Electrospinning as a potential tissue engineering scaffolding technique has attracted a great deal of interest and has been widely discussed in many studies. The high surface-to-volume ratio of nanofibres, coupled with their ability to fabricate scaffolds that may mimic extracellular matrices, facilitates cell migration, proliferation, adhesion, and differentiation. These are all very desirable properties for TE applications. However, despite its widespread use and distinct advantages, electrospun scaffolds suffer from two major practical limitations: poor cell penetration and poor load-bearing applications. Furthermore, electrospun scaffolds have low mechanical strength. Several solutions have been offered by various research groups to overcome these limitations. This review provides an overview of the electrospinning techniques used to synthesise nanofibres for TE applications. In addition, we describe current research on nanofibre fabrication and characterisation, including the main limitations of electrospinning and some possible solutions to overcome these limitations.

Fabrication of covalent organic frameworks modified nanofibrous membrane for efficiently enriching and detecting the trace polychlorinated biphenyls in water

Enriching and detecting the trace pollutants in actual matrices are critical to evaluating the water quality. Herein, a novel nanofibrous membrane, named PAN-SiO₂@TpPa, was prepared by in situ growing β-ketoenamine-linked covalent organic frameworks (COF-TpPa) on the aminated polyacrylonitrile (PAN) nanofibers, and adopted for enriching the trace polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in various natural water body (river, lake and sea water) through the solid-phase micro-extraction (SPME) process. The resulted nanofibrous membrane owned abundant functional groups (-NH-, -OH and aromatic groups), outstandingly thermal and chemical stability, and excellent ability in extracting PCBs congeners. Based on the SPME process, the PCBs congeners could be quantitatively analyzed by the traditional gas chromatography (GC) method, with the satisfactory linear relationship (R²>0.99), low detection limit (LODs, 0.1∼5 ng L^-1), high enrichment factors (EFs, 2714∼3949) and multiple recycling (>150 runs). Meanwhile, when PAN-SiO₂@TpPa was adopted in the real water samples, the low matrix effects on the enrichment of PCBs at both 5 and 50 ng L^-1 over PAN-SiO₂@TpPa membrane firmly revealed the feasibility of enriching the trace PCBs in real water. Besides, the related mechanism of extracting PCBs on PAN-SiO₂@TpPa mainly involved the synergistic effect of hydrophobic effect, π-π stacking and hydrogen bonding.

A review on polysaccharides mediated electrospun nanofibers for diabetic wound healing: Their current status with regulatory perspective

The current treatment strategies for diabetic wound care provide only moderate degree of effectiveness; hence new and improved therapeutic techniques are in great demand. Diabetic wound healing is a complex physiological process that involves synchronisation of various biological events such as haemostasis, inflammation, and remodelling. Nanomaterials like polymeric nanofibers (NFs) offer a promising approach for the treatment of diabetic wounds and have emerged as viable options for wound management. Electrospinning is a powerful and cost-effective method to fabricate versatile NFs with a wide array of raw materials for different biological applications. The electrospun NFs have unique advantages in the development of wound dressings due to their high specific surface area and porosity. The electrospun NFs possess a unique porous structure and biological function similar to the natural extracellular matrix (ECM), and are known to accelerate wound healing. Compared to traditional dressings, the electrospun NFs are more effective in healing wounds owing to their distinct characteristics, good surface functionalisation, better biocompatibility and biodegradability. This review provides a comprehensive overview of the electrospinning procedure and its operating principle, with special emphasis on the role of electrospun NFs in the treatment of diabetic wounds. This review discusses the present techniques applied in the fabrication of NF dressings, and highlights the future prospects of electrospun NFs in medicinal applications.

Anchoring black phosphorous quantum dots on Bi2WO6 porous hollow spheres: A novel 0D/3D S-scheme photocatalyst for efficient degradation of amoxicillin under visible light

Reasonable regulation of the micro-morphology of material can significantly enhance the related performance. Herein, bismuth tungstate (Bi₂WO₆, simplified as BWO) porous hollow spheres with flower-like surface were prepared successfully, and this unique morphology endowed BWO with improved photocatalytic performance by reflecting and absorbing the light multiple times inside the cavity. To inhibit the rapid recombination of photogenerated e^--h⁺ pairs within BWO itself, black phosphorous quantum dots (BPQDs) were anchored onto the nanosheets of BWO sphere closely by a facile self-assembly process, which will not shade the pores of BWO owing to the small size of BPQDs, but the BP nanosheets have the chance to do that. The band gap of BPQDs expanded much after exfoliation due to the quantum confinement effects, which matched the energy band of BWO well to form S-scheme heterojunction, achieving more efficient separation of photogenerated charges. As a result, the BPQDs/BWO exhibited attractive photocatalytic performance in the degradation of amoxicillin (AMX) and other antibiotics. Besides, the operation conditions were optimized, specifically, 94.5 % of AMX (20 mg/L, 200 mL) can be removed in 60 min when 50 mg of 2BPQDs/BWO was used as catalyst with solution pH = 11. Moreover, a possible degradation pathway of AMX was proposed based on the detected intermediates.

An achieved strategy for magnetic biochar for removal of tetracyclines and fluoroquinolones: Adsorption and mechanism studies

In this study, poplar wood biochar modified with Fe₃O₄ (MPBC) was prepared using poplar wood as carbon source applied to remove tetracyclines and fluoroquinolones. The adsorption behavior was investigated by batch experiments, and a series of characterization techniques were used to study the corresponding mechanism. Characterizations indicated that pore filling, electrostatic interactions, π-π interaction, surface complexation, and hydrogen bond contributed to the adsorption of antibiotics on MPBC. Most importantly, the thermodynamic experiment results showed that the adsorption capacity of MPBC for tetracyclines (70.28-89.58 mg⋅g^-1) was significantly higher than fluoroquinolones (35.54-60.31 mg⋅g^-1), which was further explained by hydrogen bond interactions calculated from Conductor-like screening model for real solvents (COSMO-RS). In addition, the adsorption between MPBC and antibiotics was favorable at lower ionic strengths and neutral conditions. Conclusively, this study could provide a promising approach to controlling the pollution of tetracyclines and fluoroquinolones.

Experimental design by response surface methodology for efficient cefixime uptake from hospital effluents using anion exchange membrane

The excessive use of antibiotics and their ultimate routes to the environment have prompted the drug resistance, which is becoming a major ecological issue. In this work, we have evaluated the performance of quaternary ammonium poly (2, 6-dimethyl-1,4-phenylene oxide) and polyvinyl alcohol (QPPO/PVA) based anion exchange membrane against cefixime (a third generation cephalosporin antibiotic) present in hospital effluents. The membrane's surface morphology was studied through scanning electron microscopy. The optimization of experimental parameters through Response Surface Methodology helped to evaluate the inter parameter dependence and predict maximum uptake capacity (qe). The speculated value of qe (6.72 mg g-1) obtained through central composite design was close to the experimental value of 7.01 mg g-1 with percent relative error of 4.31%. Further, the evaluation of experimental data using isotherms (Langmuir and Freundlich) and kinetic models (pseudo-first-order and second-order) proposed that the interactions between cefixime and the membrane were physisorptive in nature. The intra-day and inter-day assays exhibited lower %RSD values of 0.4% (n = 5) and 0.3% (n = 5). Furthermore, a percentage recovery of 98.2% (n = 9) and limit of detection 1 × 10-5 μg mL-1 was observed. The chromatogram of the treated water samples presented only negligible amount of cefixime indicating a great potential of QPPO/PVA membrane for the removal of cefixime from real water samples. The membrane could be regenerated for three consecutive cycles without any prominent loss in efficiency.

Electrospun fibers as carriers for topical drug delivery and release in skin bandages and patches for atopic dermatitis treatment

The skin is a complex layer system and the most important barrier between the environment and the organism. In this review, we describe some widespread skin problems, with a focus on eczema, which are affecting more and more people all over the world. Most of treatment methods for atopic dermatitis (AD) are focused on increasing skin moisture and protecting from bacterial infection and external irritation. Topical and transdermal treatments have specific requirements for drug delivery. Breathability, flexibility, good mechanical properties, biocompatibility, and efficacy are important for the patches used for skin. Up to today, electrospun fibers are mostly used for wound dressing. Their properties, however, meet the requirements for skin patches for the treatment of AD. Active agents can be incorporated into fibers by blending, coaxial or side-by-side electrospinning, and also by physical absorption post-processing. Drug release from the electrospun membranes is affected by drug and polymer properties and the technique used to combine them into the patch. We describe in detail the in vitro release mechanisms, parameters affecting the drug transport, and their kinetics, including theoretical approaches. In addition, we present the current research on skin patch design. This review summarizes the current extensive know-how on electrospun fibers as skin drug delivery systems, while underlining the advantages in their prospective use as patches for atopic dermatitis. Advances in the Preparation of Nanofiber Dressings by Electrospinning for Promoting Diabetic Wound Healing

Chronic diabetic wounds are one of the main complications of diabetes, manifested by persistent inflammation, decreased epithelialization motility, and impaired wound healing. This will not only lead to the repeated hospitalization of patients, but also bear expensive hospitalization costs. In severe cases, it can lead to amputation, sepsis or death. Electrospun nanofibers membranes have the characteristics of high porosity, high specific surface area, and easy functionalization of structure, so they can be used as a safe and effective platform in the treatment of diabetic wounds and have great application potential. This article briefly reviewed the pathogenesis of chronic diabetic wounds and the types of dressings commonly used, and then reviewed the development of electrospinning technology in recent years and the advantages of electrospun nanofibers in the treatment of diabetic wounds. Finally, the reports of different types of nanofiber dressings on diabetic wounds are summarized, and the method of using multi-drug combination therapy in diabetic wounds is emphasized, which provides new ideas for the effective treatment of diabetic wounds.

Ofloxacin Removal from Aqueous Media by Means of Magnetoactive Electrospun Fibrous Adsorbents

Functionalized electrospun polymer microfibrous membranes were fabricated by electrospinning and further surface-functionalized with magnetic iron oxide (Fe_xO_y) nanoparticles to yield magnetoactive nanocomposite fibrous adsorbents. The latter were characterized in respect to their morphology, mechanical properties and magnetic properties while they were further evaluated as substrates for removing Ofloxacin (OFL) from synthetic aqueous media and secondary urban wastewater (UWW) under varying physicochemical parameters, including the concentration of the pharmaceutical pollutant, the solution pH and the membranes' magnetic content. The magnetic-functionalized fibrous adsorbents demonstrated significantly enhanced adsorption efficacy in comparison to their non-functionalized fibrous analogues while their magnetic properties enabled their magnetic recovery and regeneration.

Electrospun nanofiber-based glucose sensors for glucose detection

Diabetes is a chronic, systemic metabolic disease that leads to multiple complications, even death. Meanwhile, the number of people with diabetes worldwide is increasing year by year. Sensors play an important role in the development of biomedical devices. The development of efficient, stable, and inexpensive glucose sensors for the continuous monitoring of blood glucose levels has received widespread attention because they can provide reliable data for diabetes prevention and diagnosis. Electrospun nanofibers are new kinds of functional nanocomposites that show incredible capabilities for high-level biosensing. This article reviews glucose sensors based on electrospun nanofibers. The principles of the glucose sensor, the types of glucose measurement, and the glucose detection methods are briefly discussed. The principle of electrospinning and its applications and advantages in glucose sensors are then introduced. This article provides a comprehensive summary of the applications and advantages of polymers and nanomaterials in electrospun nanofiber-based glucose sensors. The relevant applications and comparisons of enzymatic and non-enzymatic nanofiber-based glucose sensors are discussed in detail. The main advantages and disadvantages of glucose sensors based on electrospun nanofibers are evaluated, and some solutions are proposed. Finally, potential commercial development and improved methods for glucose sensors based on electrospinning nanofibers are discussed.

Formation of Nano-Fibrous Patterns on Aluminum Substrates via Photolithographic Fabrication of Electrospun Photosensitive Polyimide Fibrous Membranes

The formation of polymeric micro-patterns on various substrates via a photolithography procedure has been widely used in semiconductor fabrication. Standard polymer patterns are usually fabricated via photosensitive polymer varnishes, in which large amounts of potentially harmful solvents with weight ratios over 50 wt% have to be removed. In the current work, a novel pattern-formation methodology via solvent-free electrospun photosensitive polymeric fibrous membranes (NFMs) instead of the conventional photosensitive solutions as the starting photoresists was proposed and practiced. For this purpose, a series of preimidized negative auto-photosensitive polyimide (PSPI) resins were first prepared via the two-step chemical imidization procedure from the copolymerization reactions of 3,3',4,4'-benzophenonetetracarboxylic- dianhydride (BTDA) and two ortho-methyl-substituted aromatic diamines, including 3,3',5,5'-tetramethyl-4,4'-diaminodiphenylmethane (TMMDA) and 3,7-diamino-2,8-dimethyl- dibenzothiophene sulfone (TSN). The derived homopolymer PI-1 (BTDA-TMMDA) and the copolymers, including SPI-2~SPI-6, with the molar ratio of 5~25% for TSN in the diamine units, showed good solubility in polar solvents. Then, a series of PSPI NFMs were fabricated via standard electrospinning procedure with the developed PSPI solutions in N,N-dimethylacetamide (DMAc) with a solid content of 25 wt% as the starting materials. The derived PSPI NFMs showed good thermal stability with 5% weight loss temperatures higher than 500 °C in nitrogen. Meanwhile, the derived PSPIs showed good photosensitivity to the ultraviolet (UV) emitting wavelengths of i-line (365 nm), g-line (405 nm) and h-line (436 nm) of the high-pressure mercury lamps in both forms of transparent films and opaque NFMs. Fine micro-patterns with a line width of around 100 μm were directly obtained from the representative SPI-4 NFM via standard photolithography procedure.

Electrospinning of PLA Nanofibers: Recent Advances and Its Potential Application for Food Packaging

Poly(lactic acid), also abbreviated as PLA, is a promising biopolymer for food packaging owing to its environmental-friendly characteristic and desirable physical properties. Electrospinning technology makes the production of PLA-based nanomaterials available with expected structures and enhanced barrier, mechanical, and thermal properties; especially, the facile process produces a high encapsulation efficiency and controlled release of bioactive agents for the purpose of extending the shelf life and promoting the quality of foodstuffs. In this study, different types of electrospinning techniques used for the preparation of PLA-based nanofibers are summarized, and the enhanced properties of which are also described. Moreover, its application in active and intelligent packaging materials by introducing different components into nanofibers is highlighted. In all, the review establishes the promising prospects of PLA-based nanocomposites for food packaging application.

Preparation and Recognition Properties of Molecularly Imprinted Nanofiber Membrane of Chrysin

The separation and extraction of chrysin from active ingredients of natural products are of great significance, but the existing separation and extraction methods have certain drawbacks. Here, chrysin molecularly imprinted nanofiber membranes (MINMs) were prepared by means of electrospinning using chrysin as a template and polyvinyl alcohol and natural renewable resource rosin ester as membrane materials, which were used for the separation of active components in the natural product. The MINM was examined using Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The adsorption performance, adsorption kinetics, adsorption selectivity, and reusability of the MINM were investigated in static adsorption experiments. The analysis results show that the MINM was successfully prepared with good morphology and thermal stability. The MINM has a good adsorption capacity for chrysin, showing fast adsorption kinetics, and the maximum adsorption capacity was 127.5 mg·g⁻¹, conforming to the Langmuir isotherm model and pseudo-second-order kinetic model. In addition, the MINM exhibited good selectivity and excellent reusability. Therefore, the MINM proposed in this paper is a promising material for the adsorption and separation of chrysin.

A Review on Electrospun Poly(amino acid) Nanofibers and Their Applications of Hemostasis and Wound Healing

The timely and effective control and repair of wound bleeding is a key research issue all over the world. From traditional compression hemostasis to a variety of new hemostatic methods, people have a more comprehensive understanding of the hemostatic mechanism and the structure and function of different types of wound dressings. Electrospun nanofibers stand out with nano size, high specific surface area, higher porosity, and a variety of complex structures. They are high-quality materials that can effectively promote wound hemostasis and wound healing because they can imitate the structural characteristics of the skin extracellular matrix (ECM) and support cell adhesion and angiogenesis. At the same time, combined with amino acid polymers with good biocompatibility not only has high compatibility with the human body but can also be combined with a variety of drugs to further improve the effect of wound hemostatic dressing. This paper summarizes the application of different amino acid electrospun wound dressings, analyzes the characteristics of different materials in preparation and application, and looks forward to the development of directions of poly(amino acid) electrospun dressings in hemostasis.

Electrospun nanofibrous membrane for biomedical application

Electrospinning is a simple, cost-effective, flexible, and feasible continuous micro-nano polymer fiber preparation technology that has attracted extensive scientific and industrial interest over the past few decades, owing to its versatility and ability to manufacture highly tunable nanofiber networks. Nanofiber membrane materials prepared using electrospinning have excellent properties suitable for biomedical applications, such as a high specific surface area, strong plasticity, and the ability to manipulate their nanofiber components to obtain the desired properties and functions. With the increasing popularity of nanomaterials in this century, electrospun nanofiber membranes are gradually becoming widely used in various medical fields. Here, the research progress of electrospun nanofiber membrane materials is reviewed, including the basic electrospinning process and the development of the materials as well as their biomedical applications. The main purpose of this review is to discuss the latest research progress on electrospun nanofiber membrane materials and the various new electrospinning technologies that have emerged in recent years for various applications in the medical field. The application of electrospun nanofiber membrane materials in recent years in tissue engineering, wound dressing, cancer diagnosis and treatment, medical protective equipment, and other fields is the main topic of discussion in this review. Finally, the development of electrospun nanofiber membrane materials in the biomedical field is systematically summarized and prospects are discussed. In general, electrospinning has profound prospects in biomedical applications, as it is a practical and flexible technology used for the fabrication of microfibers and nanofibers.

This review summarizes recent research on the application of electrospun nanofiber membranes as tissue engineering materials for the cardiovascular system, motor system, nervous system, and other clinical aspects.

Stretchable skin hydrating PVB patches with controlled pores' size and shape for deliberate evening primrose oil spreading, transport and release

With the increasing number of skin problems such as atopic dermatitis and the number of affected people, scientists are looking for alternative treatments to standard ointment or cream applications. Electrospun membranes are known for their high porosity and surface to volume area, which leads to a great loading capacity and their applications as skin patches. Polymer fibers are widely used for biomedical applications such as drug delivery systems or regenerative medicine. Importantly, fibrous meshes are used as oil reservoirs due to their excellent absorption properties. In our study, nano- and microfibers of poly (vinyl butyral-co-vinyl alcohol-co-vinyl acetate) (PVB) were electrospun. The biocompatibility of PVB fibers was confirmed with the keratinocytes culture studies, including cells' proliferation and replication tests. To verify the usability and stretchability of electrospun membranes, they were tested in two forms as-spun and elongated after uniaxially stretched. We examine oil transport through the patches for as-spun fibers and compare it with the numerical simulation of oil flow in the 3D reconstruction of nano- and microfiber networks. Evening primrose oil spreading and water vapor transmission rate (WVTR) tests were performed too. Finally, for skin hydration tests, manufactured materials loaded with evening primrose oil were applied to the forearm of volunteers for 6 h, showing increased skin moisture after using patches. This study clearly demonstrates that pore size and shape, together with fiber diameter, influence oil transport in the electrospun patches allowing to understand the key driving process of electrospun PVB patches for skin hydration applications. The oil release improves skin moisture and can be designed regarding the needs, by manufacturing different fibers' sizes and arrangements. The fibrous based patches loaded with oils are easy to handle and could remain on the altered skin for a long time and deliver the oil, therefore they are an ideal material for overnight bandages for skin treatment.

Drug Delivery Systems for Photodynamic Therapy: The Potentiality and Versatility of Electrospun Nanofibers

Recently, photodynamic therapy (PDT) has become a promising approach for the treatment of a broad range of diseases, including oncological and infectious diseases. This minimally invasive and localized therapy is based on the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) able to destroy cancer cells and inactivate pathogens by combining the use of photosensitizers (PSs), light and molecular oxygen. To overcome the drawbacks of drug systemic administration, drug delivery systems (DDS) can be used to carrier the PSs, allowing higher therapeutic efficacy and minimal toxicological effects. Polymeric nanofibers produced by electrospinning emerged as powerful platforms for drug delivery applications. Electrospun nanofibers exhibit outstanding characteristics, such as large surface area to volume ratio associated with high drug loading, high porosity, flexibility, ability to incorporate and release a wide variety of therapeutic agents, biocompatibility and biodegradability. Due to the versatility of this technique, fibers with different morphologies and functionalities, including drug release profile can be produced. The possibility of scalability makes electrospinning even more attractive for the development of DDS. This review aims to explore and show an up to date of the huge potential of electrospun nanofibers as DDS for different PDT applications and discuss the opportunities and challenges in this field. Advanced catalytic ozonation for degradation of pharmaceutical pollutants-A review

Various chemical treatment techniques are involved in removing refractory organic compounds from water and wastewater using the oxidation reaction of hydroxyl radicals (^•OH). The use of catalysts in advanced catalytic ozonation is likely to improve the decomposition of molecular ozone to generate highly active free radicals that facilitate the rapid and efficient mineralization and degradation of numerous organics. For the degradation of toxic organic pollutants in wastewater, the advanced catalytic ozonation process has been widely applied in recent years. Low utilization efficiency of ozone and ineffective mineralization of organic contaminants by ozone can be remedied with advanced catalytic ozonation. Advanced catalytic ozonation has gained popularity because of these merits. However, homogeneous catalytic ozonation has the disadvantage of producing secondary contaminants from the addition of metallic ions. Heterogeneous catalytic ozonation can overcome this drawback by utilizing metals, metallic oxides, and carbon materials as a catalyst of efficacy and stability. This review discusses various aspects of catalytic ozonation in wastewater treatment of pharmaceutical pollutants, application of catalytic ozonation process in typical wastewater, and prospects in advancing the techniques in heterogeneous catalytic ozonation.

Efficient, rapid and simple adsorption method by polydopamine polystyrene nanofibers mat for removal of multi-class antibiotic residues in environmental water

Polydopamine polystyrene nanofibers mat (PDA-PS NFsM) was prepared as an adsorbent for the simultaneous removal of multiple antibiotic residues in environmental water for the first time. PDA-PS NFsM can directly be used to adsorb 18 antibiotic residues belonging to 8 classes without any pretreatment of water samples. The adsorption process was completed within 5 min. All antibiotics could be removed at the same time, and the removal rate of each target was above 85%. Moreover, the used PDA-PS NFsM can be easily separated from the environmental water by taking out directly, and can be reused for 10 times after simple regeneration. The thermodynamic and kinetic properties of PDA-PS NFsM adsorption of antibiotic residues were further investigated consequently. It was found that the adsorptions of PDA-PS NFsM to the targets were spontaneous and endothermic process (ΔG<0, ΔH>0, ΔS>0). The results of adsorption kinetic experiments illustrated that the adsorption process was rapid, the adsorption equilibrium of which can be reached in 5 min. Adsorption isotherm experiments proved that the adsorption process of PDA-PS NFsM was consistent with Langmuir adsorption (R² > 0.994), and the maximum adsorption capacity of PDA-PS NFsM towards all targets were 123.76 mg g^-1. The developed method is rapid and simple, and can efficiently adsorb and remove a variety of antibiotics in environmental water, which has good practical application prospect.

Polymer-Based Nanofiber-Nanoparticle Hybrids and Their Medical Applications

The search for higher-quality nanomaterials for medicinal applications continues. There are similarities between electrospun fibers and natural tissues. This property has enabled electrospun fibers to make significant progress in medical applications. However, electrospun fibers are limited to tissue scaffolding applications. When nanoparticles and nanofibers are combined, the composite material can perform more functions, such as photothermal, magnetic response, biosensing, antibacterial, drug delivery and biosensing. To prepare nanofiber and nanoparticle hybrids (NNHs), there are two primary ways. The electrospinning technology was used to produce NNHs in a single step. An alternate way is to use a self-assembly technique to create nanoparticles in fibers. This paper describes the creation of NNHs from routinely used biocompatible polymer composites. Single-step procedures and self-assembly methodologies are used to discuss the preparation of NNHs. It combines recent research discoveries to focus on the application of NNHs in drug release, antibacterial, and tissue engineering in the last two years.

Multifunctional Membranes-A Versatile Approach for Emerging Pollutants Removal

This paper presents a comprehensive literature review surveying the most important polymer materials used for electrospinning processes and applied as membranes for the removal of emerging pollutants. Two types of processes integrate these membrane types: separation processes, where electrospun polymers act as a support for thin film composites (TFC), and adsorption as single or coupled processes (photo-catalysis, advanced oxidation, electrochemical), where a functionalization step is essential for the electrospun polymer to improve its properties. Emerging pollutants (EPs) released in the environment can be efficiently removed from water systems using electrospun membranes. The relevant results regarding removal efficiency, adsorption capacity, and the size and porosity of the membranes and fibers used for different EPs are described in detail.

Zein as a versatile biopolymer: different shapes for different biomedical applications

In recent years, the interest regarding the use of proteins as renewable resources has deeply intensified. The strongest impact of these biomaterials is clear in the field of smart medicines and biomedical engineering. Zein, a vegetal protein extracted from corn, is a suitable biomaterial for all the above-mentioned purposes due to its biodegradability and biocompatibility. The controlled drug delivery of small molecules, fabrication of bioactive membranes, and 3D assembly of scaffold for tissue regeneration are just some of the topics now being extensively investigated and reported in the literature. Herein, we review the recent literature on zein as a biopolymer and its applications in the biomedical world, focusing on the different shapes and sizes through which it can be manipulated.

Zein a versatile biomaterial in the biomedical field. Easy to chemically functionalize with good emulsification properties, can be employed in drug delivery, fabrication of bioactive membranes and 3D scaffolds for tissue regeneration.

Elastic Nanofibrous Membranes for Medical and Personal Protection Applications: Manufacturing, Anti-COVID-19, and Anti-Colistin Resistant Bacteria Evaluation

Herein, in the present work two series of thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) nanofibers were manufactured using the electrospinning techniques with ZnO and CuO nanoparticles for a potential use as an elastic functional layer in antimicrobial applications. Percentages of 0%, 2 wt%, and 4 wt% of the nanoparticles were used. The morphological characterization of the electrospun TPU and TPU/NPs composites nanofibers were observed by using scanning electron microscopy to show the average fiber diameter and it was in the range of 90-150 nm with a significant impact of the nanoparticle type. Mechanical characterization showed that TPU nanofiber membranes exhibit excellent mechanical properties with ultra-high elastic properties. Elongation at break reached up to 92.5%. The assessment of the developed nanofiber membranes for medical and personal protection applications was done against various colistin resistant bacterial strains and the results showed an increment activity by increasing the metal oxide concentration up to 83% reduction rate by using TPU/ZnO 4% nanofibers against K. pneumoniae strain 10. The bacterial growth was completely eradicated after 8 and 16 h incubation with TPU/ZnO and TPU/CuO nanofibers, respectively. The nanofibers SEM study reveals the adsorption of the bacterial cells on the metal oxides nanofibers surface which led to cell lysis and releasing of their content. Finally, in vitro study against Spike S-protein from SARS-CoV-2 was also evaluated to investigate the potent effectiveness of the proposed nanofibers in the virus deactivation. The results showed that the metal oxide concentration is an effective factor in the antiviral activity due to the observed pattern of increasing the antibacterial and antiviral activity by increasing the metal oxide concentration; however, TPU/ZnO nanofibers showed a potent antiviral activity in relation to TPU/CuO.

Electrospinning Preparation of GaN:ZnO Solid Solution Nanorods with Visible-Light-Driven Photocatalytic Activity toward H2 Production

The development of a facile method for the synthesis of GaN:ZnO solid solution, an attractive material with a wurtzite-type structure, is vital to enhance its photocatalytic activity toward H2 evolution. Herein, GaN:ZnO solid solution nanorods with diameters of around 180 nm were fabricated by combining the electro-spun method with a sequentially calcinating process. Photocatalytic water-splitting activities of the as-obtained samples loaded with Rh2−yCryO3 co-catalyst were estimated by H2 evolution under visible-light irradiation. The as-prepared GaN:ZnO nanorods at a nitridation temperature of 850 °C showed the optimal performance. Careful characterization of the GaN:ZnO solid solution nanorods indicated that the nitridation temperature is an important parameter affecting the photocatalytic performance, which is related to the specific surface area and the absorbable visible-light wavelength range. Finally, the mechanism of the GaN:ZnO solid solution nanorods was also investigated. The proposed synthesis strategy paves a new way to realize excellent activity and recyclability of GaN:ZnO solid solution nanorod photocatalysts for hydrogen generation.

Electrospun PVP-Core/PHBV-Shell Fibers to Eliminate Tailing Off for an Improved Sustained Release of Curcumin

Tailing off release in the sustained release of water-insoluble curcumin (Cur) is a significant challenge in the drug delivery system. As a novel solution, core-shell nanodrug containers have aroused many interests due to their potential improvement in drug-sustained release. In this work, a biodegradable polymer, poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyvalerate) (PHBV), and hydrophilic polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) were exploited as drug delivery carriers by coaxial electrospinning, and the core-shell drug-loaded fibers exhibited improved sustained release of Cur. A cylindrical morphology and a clear core-shell structure were observed by scanning and transmission electron microscopies. The X-ray diffraction pattern and infrared spectroscopy revealed that Cur existed in amorphous form due to its good compatibility with PHBV and PVP. The in vitro drug release curves confirmed that the core-shell container manipulated Cur in a faster drug release process than that in the traditional PHBV monolithic container. The combination of the material and structure forms a novel nanodrug container with a better sustained release of water-insoluble Cur. This strategy is beneficial for exploiting more functional biomedical materials to improve the drug release behavior.

Perspective on Nanofiber Electrochemical Sensors: Design of Relative Selectivity Experiments

The use of nanofibers creates the ability for non-enzymatic sensing in various applications and greatly improves the sensitivity, speed, and accuracy of electrochemical sensors for a wide variety of analytes. The high surface area to volume ratio of the fibers as well as their high porosity, even when compared to other common nanostructures, allows for enhanced electrocatalytic, adsorptive, and analyte-specific recognition mechanisms. Nanofibers have the potential to rival and replace materials used in electrochemical sensing. As more types of nanofibers are developed and tested for new applications, more consistent and refined selectivity experiments are needed. We applied this idea in a review of interferant control experiments and real sample analyses. The goal of this review is to provide guidelines for acceptable nanofiber sensor selectivity experiments with considerations for electrocatalytic, adsorptive, and analyte-specific recognition mechanisms. The intended presented review and guidelines will be of particular use to junior researchers designing their first control experiments, but could be used as a reference for anyone designing selectivity experiments for non-enzymatic sensors including nanofibers. We indicate the importance of testing both interferants in complex media and mechanistic interferants in the selectivity analysis of newly developed nanofiber sensor surfaces.

Electrospun Medicated Nanofibers for Wound Healing: Review

With the increasing demand for wound care and treatment worldwide, traditional dressings have been unable to meet the needs of the existing market due to their limited antibacterial properties and other defects. Electrospinning technology has attracted more and more researchers' attention as a simple and versatile manufacturing method. The electrospun nanofiber membrane has a unique structure and biological function similar to the extracellular matrix (ECM), and is considered an advanced wound dressing. They have significant potential in encapsulating and delivering active substances that promote wound healing. This article first discusses the common types of wound dressing, and then summarizes the development of electrospun fiber preparation technology. Finally, the polymers and common biologically active substances used in electrospinning wound dressings are summarized, and portable electrospinning equipment is also discussed. Additionally, future research needs are put forward.

The Drug Release Kinetics and Anticancer Activity of the GO/PVA-Curcumin Nanostructures: The Effects of the Preparation Method and the GO Amount

The Graphene Oxide (GO) incorporated polyvinyl alcohol/sodium alginate (PVA-SA) composites with curcumin were prepared by the solvent casting and electro-spinning techniques. The GO was incorporated into PVA-SA nano-fiber and film matrixes, and the performance of these nano-composites as drug carriers was investigated. The effects of production method (film or mat) and GO amount on the water absorption properties and delivery of curcumin behaviors were investigated. The swelling and releasing were studied at the specific interval times in deionized water and phosphate buffer solution (pH = 7.4), respectively. The release kinetics was evaluated to find a suitable mechanism of the release. Finally, the anticancer activity of composite nano-fibers on the cancer cells was investigated. The XRD and FTIR analyses confirmed nanocomposites structures, and the successful incorporation was shown by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The results showed that addition of the GO to PVA/SA decreased swelling ratio of the films (up to 31%) and increased the swelling ratio of the mats (up to 37.5%). However, for both film and mat, increasing of the GO amount reduced the curcumin release. Drug release decreasing up to 22.5% was observed for film, while a very high release decreasing up to about 70% was seen for mat. Also, both film and mat structures showed significant anti-cancer activity on MCF-7 cells. The lower cell viability was about 40 and 30% for film and mat, respectively. The kinetics evaluations suggested a Korsmeyer-Peppas model and Fickian controlled drug release.

Preparation and Physicochemical Characterization of a Diclofenac Sodium-Dual Layer Polyvinyl Alcohol Patch

The aim of this study is to prepare a dual layer polyvinyl (PVA) patch using a combination of electrospinning techniques and cryogelation (freeze-thaw process) then subsequently to investigate the effect of freeze-thaw cycles, nanofiber thickness, and diclofenac sodium (DS) loading on the physicochemical and mechanical properties and formulation of dual layer PVA patches composed of electrospun PVA nanofibers and PVA cryogel. After the successful preparation of the dual layer PVA patch, the prepared patch was subjected to investigation to assess the effect of freeze-thaw cycles, nanofiber thickness and percentages of DS loading on the morphology, physiochemical and mechanical properties. Various spectroscopic techniques such as scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), water contact angle, and tensile tests were used to evaluate the physicochemical and mechanical properties of prepared dual layer PVA patches. The morphological structures of the dual layer PVA patch demonstrated the effectiveness of both techniques. The effect of freeze-thaw cycles, nanofiber thickness, and DS percentage loading on the crystallinity of a dual layer PVA patch was investigated using XRD analysis. The presence of a distinct DS peak in the FTIR spectrum indicates the compatibility of DS in a dual layer PVA patch through in-situ loading. All prepared patches were considered highly hydrophilic because the data obtained was less than 90°. The increasing saturation of DS within the PVA matrix increases the tensile strength of prepared patches, however decreased its elasticity. Evidently, the increasing of electrospun PVA nanofibers thickness, freeze-thaw cycles, and the DS saturation has improved the physicochemical and mechanical properties of the DS medicated dual layer PVA patches, making them a promising biomaterial for transdermal drug delivery applications.

The Optimization of Alternating Current Electrospun PA 6 Solutions Using a Visual Analysis System

The electrospinning process that produces fine nanofibrous materials have a major disadvantage in the area of productivity. However, alternating current (AC) electrospinning might help to solve the problem via the modification of high voltage signal. The aforementioned productivity aspect can be observed via a camera system that focuses on the jet creation area and that measures the average lifespan. The paper describes the optimization of polyamide 6 (PA 6) solutions and demonstrates the change in the behavior of the process following the addition of a minor dose of oxoacid. This addition served to convert the previously unspinnable (using AC) solution to a high-quality electrospinning solution. The visual analysis of the AC electrospinning of polymeric solutions using a high-speed camera and a programmable power source was chosen as the method for the evaluation of the quality of the process. The solutions were exposed to high voltage applying two types of AC signal, i.e., the sine wave and the step change. All the recordings presented in the paper contained two sets of data: firstly, camera recordings that showed the visual expression of electrospinning and, secondly, signal recordings that provided information on the data position in the signal function.

A New Nanocomposite Packaging Based on LASiS-Generated AgNPs for the Preservation of Apple Juice

Designing bioactive materials, with controlled metal ion release, exerting a significant biological action and associated to low toxicity for humans, is nowadays one of the most important challenges for our community. The most looked-for nanoantimicrobials are capable of releasing metal species with defined kinetic profiles, either by slowing down or inhibiting bacterial growth and pathogenic microorganism diffusion. In this study, laser ablation synthesis in solution (LASiS) has been used to produce bioactive Ag-based nanocolloids, in isopropyl alcohol, which can be used as water-insoluble nano-reservoirs in composite materials like poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyvalerate). Infrared spectroscopy was used to evaluate the chemical state of pristine polymer and final composite material, thus providing useful information about synthesis processes, as well as storage and processing conditions. Transmission electron microscopy was exploited to study the morphology of nano-colloids, along with UV-Vis for bulk chemical characterization, highlighting the presence of spheroidal particles with average diameter around 12 nm. Electro-thermal atomic absorption spectroscopy was used to investigate metal ion release from Ag-modified products, showing a maximum release around 60 ppb, which ensures an efficient antimicrobial activity, being much lower than what recommended by health institutions. Analytical spectroscopy results were matched with bioactivity tests carried out on target microorganisms of food spoilage.

Hybrid Nanofibrous Membranes as a Promising Functional Layer for Personal Protection Equipment: Manufacturing and Antiviral/Antibacterial Assessments

In this research work, nanofibrous hybrids are manufactured, characterized, and assessed as active antiviral and antibacterial membranes. In more detail, both polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) nanofibrous (NF) membranes and their composites with embedded silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) are manufactured by an electrospinning process. Their morphological structures have been investigated by a scanning electron microscope (SEM) which revealed a homogenous distribution and almost beads-free fibers in all manufactured samples. Characterization with spectroscopic tools has been performed and proved the successful manufacturing of Ag-incorporated PVA and TPU hybrid nanofibers. The crystalline phase of the nanofibers has been determined using an X-ray diffractometer (XRD) whose patterns showed their crystalline nature at an angle value (2θ) of less than 20°. Subsequent screening of both antiviral and antibacterial potential activities of developed nanohybrid membranes has been explored against different viruses, including SARS-Cov-2 and some bacterial strains. As a novel approach, the current work highlights potential effects of several polymeric hybrids on antiviral and antibacterial activities particularly against SARS-Cov-2. Moreover, two types of polymers have been tested and compared; PVA of excellent biodegradable and hydrophilic properties, and TPU of excellent mechanical, super elasticity, hydrophobicity, and durability properties. Such extreme polymers can serve a wide range of applications such as PPE, filtration, wound healing, etc. Consequently, assessment of their antiviral/antibacterial activities, as host matrices for Ag NPs, is needed for different medical applications. Our results showed that TPU-Ag was more effective than PVA-Ag as HIV-1 antiviral nanohybrid as well as in deactivating spike proteins of SARS-Cov-2. Both TPU-Ag and PVA-Ag nanofibrous membranes were found to have superior antimicrobial performance by increasing Ag concentration from 2 to 4 wt.%. Additionally, the developed membranes showed acceptable physical and mechanical properties along with both antiviral and antibacterial activities, which can enable them to be used as a promising functional layer in Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) such as (surgical gowns, gloves, overshoes, hair caps, etc.). Therefore, the developed functional membranes can support the decrease of both coronavirus spread and bacterial contamination, particularly among healthcare professionals within their workplace settings.

Synthesis of rifaximin loaded chitosan-alginate core-shell nanoparticles (Rif@CS/Alg-NPs) for antibacterial applications

The present work aims to synthesize the rifaximin loaded chitosan-alginate core-shell nanoparticles (Rif@CS/Alg-NPs) for antibacterial applications. The core-shell nanoparticles (Rif@CS/Alg-NPs) were characterized by Fourier Transform Infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM), X-rays diffraction (XRD) and zeta analyzer. The antibacterial activities of Rif@CS/Alg-NPs were investigated against three species of bacteria namely Escherichia coli (E. coli), Pseudomonas aeruginosa (PA) and Bacillus haynesii (BH). Rif@CS/Alg-NPs exhibited outstanding antibacterial activities against E. coli, P. aeroginosa and Bacillus haynesii (BH) with 24 mm, 30 mm and 34 mm zone of inhibitions, respectively. Cytotoxicity of Rif@CS/Alg-NPs was also evaluated against human lung adenocarcinoma cell line A549 and found to be nontoxic. The drug release behavior of Rif@CS/Alg-NPs was investigated at different pH levels and maximum drug release (80%) was achieved at pH (7.2). The drug release kinetic data followed the Higuchi (R² = 0.9963) kinetic model, indicating the drug release from Rif@CS/Alg-NPs as a square root of time-dependent process and diffusion controlled. Current research provides a cost-effective and green approach toward the synthesis of Rif@CS/Alg-NPs for its antibacterial applications.
