Viscoelastic Polyurethane Foam with Keratin and Flame-Retardant Additives

The Effect of Rapeseed Oil Biopolyols and Cellulose Biofillers on Selected Properties of Viscoelastic Polyurethane Foams

This paper presents the results of research on polyurethane viscoelastic foams (PUVFs) modified with biomaterials. This investigation looked at the effect of the biomaterials on the foaming processes, as well as the acoustical and selected physical-mechanical properties of the foams. Various types of rapeseed oil biopolyols and microcellulose were used to modify the materials. The analysis of properties covered a reference biopolyol-free sample and materials containing 10 wt.%, 20 wt.%, and 30 wt.% of different types of biopolyols in the mixture of polyol components. The biopolyols differed in terms of functionality and hydroxyl value (OHv). Next, a selected formulation was modified with various microcellulose biofillers in the amount of 0.5-2 wt.%. The PUVFs, with apparent densities of more than 210 kg/m3 and open-cell structures (more than 85% of open cells), showed a slow recovery to their original shape after deformation when the pressure force was removed. They were also characterized by a tensile strength in the range of 156-264 kPa, elongation at break of 310-510%, hardness of 8.1-23.1 kPa, and a high comfort factor of 3.1-7.1. The introduction of biopolyols into the polyurethane system resulted in changes in sound intensity levels of up to 31.45%, while the addition of fillers resulted in changes in sound intensity levels of up to 13.81%.

Formation of an Ammonium Nitrate Fuel Oil Similar Type of Explosive under Fire Conditions: Materials Based on Selected Polymers (PUR)

Polyurethanes (PURs) are a group of polymers with the most versatile properties and the broadest spectrum of application. Their name comes from the urethane group. PURs were introduced to the market on a large-scale basis by Bayer in 1942, in the form of Perlon U and Igamid U fibers produced by gradual polyaddition of diisocyanates and polyols. The development of PURs-production technology and the multitude of applications resulted in their widespread use. This group is so extensive that polyurethanes alone accounted for about 6% of the global production of polymers (2019)—most of them in the form of foam. Therefore, polyurethane can be found in a huge number of products—some of them stored in the vicinity of ammonium nitrate (AN). In the previous two articles, we showed that polymers and AN—stored within the same building—in fire conditions may, under certain circumstances, spontaneously transform into a material of explosive properties. The aim of this article is to check whether PUR, when in contact with AN, creates additional hazards, similarly to the previously tested polymers.

Viscoelastic Behavior of Drug-Loaded Polyurethane

Drug-eluting stents are desirable platforms for local medicine delivery. However, the incorporation of drugs into polymers can influence the mechanical and physicochemical properties of said matrix, which is a topic that is still poorly understood. In fact, this is more noticeable since the apposition is most often accompanied by mechanical stresses on the polymer coating, which can induce therapeutic failure that can result in death. It is therefore necessary to better understand their behavior by examining their properties in conditions such as those in living beings. We studied polyurethane drug carriers made in-house. Diclofenac epolamine was chosen as a model hydrophilic medicine. We used thermal measurements (DMTA) and tensile tests. The aim was to establish the influence of the loading and release of the drug on the physicochemical properties of this polymer in the presence of a stagnant or circulating fluid medium, phosphate-buffered saline (PBS). For the two PU/drug loadings studied, the effect of the initial drug load was more marked. The free volume fraction and the number of pores in the samples increased with the increasing percent of the drug and with release time. The kinetic profiles were accelerated with the loading ratio and with the presence of flow. Young's modulus and ultimate stress were not significantly influenced by the release time. A relevant relationship between the tensile properties and the viscoelastic behavior of the samples was developed. Our results have implications for optimizing the performance of drug coatings for stents.
