Mechanochemistry: Fundamental Principles and Applications

Mechanochemistry is an emerging research field at the interface of physics, mechanics, materials science, and chemistry. Complementary to traditional activation methods in chemistry, such as heat, electricity, and light, mechanochemistry focuses on the activation of chemical reactions by directly or indirectly applying mechanical forces. It has evolved as a powerful tool for controlling chemical reactions in solid state systems, sensing and responding to stresses in polymer materials, regulating interfacial adhesions, and stimulating biological processes. By combining theoretical approaches, simulations and experimental techniques, researchers have gained intricate insights into the mechanisms underlying mechanochemistry. In this review, the physical chemistry principles underpinning mechanochemistry are elucidated and a comprehensive overview of recent significant achievements in the discovery of mechanically responsive chemical processes is provided, with a particular emphasis on their applications in materials science. Additionally, The perspectives and insights into potential future directions for this exciting research field are offered.

Development of Interpolyelectrolyte Complex Based on Chitosan and Carboxymethylcellulose for Stabilizing Sandy Soil and Stimulating Vegetation of Scots Pine (Pinus sylvestris L.)

The issue of water and wind erosion of soil remains critically important. Polymeric materials offer a promising solution to this problem. In this study, we prepared and applied an interpolyelectrolyte complex (IPEC) composed of the biopolymers chitosan and sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (Na-CMC) for the structuring of forest sandy soils and the enhancement of the pre-sowing treatment of Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) seeds. A nonstoichiometric IPEC [Chitosan]:[Na-CMC] = [3:7] was synthesized, and its composition was determined using gravimetry, turbidimetry, and rheoviscosimetry methods. Soil surface treatment with IPEC involved the sequential application of a chitosan polycation (0.006% w/w) and Na-CMC polyanion (0.02% w/w) relative to the air-dry soil weight. The prepared IPEC increased soil moisture by 77%, extended water retention time by sixfold, doubled the content of agronomically valuable soil fractions > 0.25 mm, enhanced soil resistance to water erosion by 64% and wind erosion by 81%, and improved the mechanical strength of the soil-polymer crust by 17.5 times. Additionally, IPEC application resulted in slight increases in the content of humus, mobile potassium, mobile phosphorus, ammonium nitrogen, and mineral salts in the soil while maintaining soil solution pH stability and significantly increasing nitrate nitrogen levels. The novel application technologies of biopolymers and IPEC led to a 16-25% improvement in Scots pine seed germination and seedling growth metrics.

Multifunctional chitosan-based gel sponge with efficient antibacterial, hemostasis and strong adhesion

Developing wound dressings with solid adhesive properties that enable efficient, painless hemostasis and prevent wound infection remain a huge challenge. Herein, the tris(hydroxymethyl) methyl glycine-modified chitosan derivative (CTMG) was prepared and freeze-dried after simply adjusting the concentration of CTMG to obtain the chitosan-based gel sponge with desired multi-hollow structure, special antibacterial and biocompatibility. The adhesion strength on porcine skin was impressive up to 113 KPa, much higher than fibrin glue. It can withstand the pressure that far exceeds blood pressure. CTMG exhibits bacteriostatic abilities as demonstrated in a bacteriostatic assay, and alongside biocompatibility, as shown in cytotoxicity and hemolytic assays. Moreover, CTMG gel sponge showed hemostatic properties in both in vivo and in vitro hemostasis experiments. During an experiment on liver hemorrhage in rats, CTMG gel sponge proved to be more effective in controlling bleeding than other hemostatic sponges available on the market, indicating its promising hemostatic properties. CTMG gel sponge possesses the potential to function as a wound dressing and hemostatic material, making it suitable for various clinical applications.

Research on Integrated 3D Printing of Microfluidic Chips

Microfluidic chips have the advantages of miniaturization, integration, and portability, and are widely used in the early diagnosis of major diseases, personalized medical treatment, environmental detection, health quarantine, and other fields. The existing microfluidic chip manufacturing process is difficult to operate because of complex three-dimensional channels, complicated manufacturing steps, limited printing materials, the difficulty of operating the bonding process, and the need to purchase expensive new equipment. In this paper, an integrated molding method for microfluidic chips that integrates 3D printing and polymer dissolution technology is proposed. First, the channel mold of poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) or high impact polystyrene (HIPS) is dissolved to complete the manufacturing of the microfluidic chip channel. The integrated 3D-forming method of microfluidic chips proposed in this paper can manufacture microchannels inside the microfluidic chip, avoid the bonding process, and eliminate the need for rapid alignment of microchannels, material modification, and other operations, thus improving the stability of the process. Finally, by comparing the microchannels made by PVA and HIPS, it is concluded that the quality of the microchannels made by HIPS is obviously better than that made by PVA. This paper provides a new idea for the fabrication of microfluidic chips and the application of HIPS.

Self-Healing, Robust, Liquid-Repellent Coatings Exploiting the Donor-Acceptor Self-Assembly

Liquid-repellent coatings with rapid self-healing and strong substrate adhesion have tremendous potential for industrial applications, but their formulation is challenging. We exploit synergistic chemistry between donor-acceptor self-assembly units of polyurethane and hydrophobic metal-organic framework (MOF) nanoparticles to overcome this challenge. The nanocomposite features a nanohierarchical morphology with excellent liquid repellence. Using polyurethane as a base polymer, the incorporated donor-acceptor self-assembly enables high strength, excellent self-healing property, and strong adhesion strength on multiple substrates. The interaction mechanism of donor-acceptor self-assembly was revealed via density functional theory and infrared spectroscopy. The superhydrophobicity of polyurethane was achieved by introducing alkyl-functionalized MOF nanoparticles and post-application silanization. The combination of the self-healing polymer and nanohierarchical MOF nanoparticles results in self-cleaning capability, resistance to tape peel and high-speed liquid jet impacts, recoverable liquid repellence over a self-healed notch, and low ice adhesion up to 50 icing/deicing cycles. By exploiting the porosity of MOF nanoparticles in our nanocomposites, fluorine-free, slippery liquid-infused porous surfaces with stable, low ice adhesion strengths were also achieved by infusing silicone oil into the coatings.
