Xanthate-Modified Magnetic Fe3O4@SiO2-Based Polyvinyl Alcohol/Chitosan Composite Material for Efficient Removal of Heavy Metal Ions from Water

Adsorption of Pb(II) in water by modified chitosan-based microspheres and the study of mechanism

In this study, a fresh three-dimensional microsphere adsorbent (CATP@SA3) was successfully synthesized by Attapulgite (ATP) and combining Chitosan (CS), incorporating them into a Sodium alginate (SA) solution, and crosslinking them in a CaCl2 solution. Multiple analyses, including XRD, TGA, FTIR, XPS, SEM-EDS, and BET were utilized to comprehensively characterize the structural makeup of CATP@SA3. These analyses revealed the presence of beneficial functional groups like hydroxyl, amino, and carboxyl groups that enhance the adsorption efficiency in adsorption procedures. CATP@SA3 was evaluated by studying different factors, including material ratio, contact time, dosage, solution pH, Pb(II) concentration, temperature, ionic strength, and aqueous environment. Three adsorption models, including kinetic, isotherm, and thermodynamic, were fitted to the experimental data. The findings demonstrated that the maximum Pb(II) adsorption capacity of CATP@SA3 was 1081.36 mg/g, with a removal rate that exceeded 70 % even after 5 cycles of use. Furthermore, correlation adsorption models revealed that the adsorption process of Pb(II) with CATP@SA3 was driven by a chemical predominantly reaction.

Unravelling the potential of magnetic nanoparticles: a comprehensive review of design and applications in analytical chemistry

The study of nanoparticles has emerged as a prominent research field, offering a wide range of applications across various disciplines. With their unique physical and chemical properties within the size range of 1-100 nm, nanoparticles have garnered significant attention. Among them, magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) exemplify promising super-magnetic characteristics, especially in the 10-20 nm size range, making them ideal for swift responses to applied magnetic fields. In this comprehensive review, we focus on MNPs suitable for analytical purposes. We investigate and classify them based on their analytical applications, synthesis routes, and overall utility, providing a detailed literature summary. By exploring a diverse range of MNPs, this review offers valuable insights into their potential application in various analytical scenarios.

Recent advances in chitosan-based nanocomposites for adsorption and removal of heavy metal ions

Due to the high concentration of various toxic and dangerous pollutants, industrial effluents have imposed increasing threats. Among the various processes for wastewater treatment, adsorption is widely used due to its simplicity, good treatment efficiency, availability of a wide range of adsorbents, and cost-effectiveness. Chitosan (CS) has received great attention as a pollutant adsorbent due to its low cost and many -OH and -NH2 functional groups that can bind heavy metal ions. However, weaknesses such as sensitivity to pH, low thermal stability and low mechanical strength, limit the application of CS in wastewater treatment. The modification of these functional groups can improve its performance via cross-linking and grafting agents. The porosity and specific surface area of CS in powder form are not ideal, so physical modification of CS via integration with other materials (e.g., metal oxide, zeolite, clay, etc.) leads to the creation of composite materials with improved absorption performance. This review provides reports on the application of CS and its nanocomposites (NCs) for the removal of various heavy metal ions. Synthesis strategy, adsorption mechanism and influencing factors on sorbents for heavy metals are discussed in detail.

Development of a label-free impedimetric aptasensor for the detection of Acinetobacter baumannii bacteria

Acinetobacter baumannii (A. baumannii) is responsible for various nosocomial infections, which is known as a clinically crucial opportunistic pathogen. Therefore, rapid detection of this pathogen is critical to prevent the spread of infection and appropriate treatment. Biological detection probes, such as aptamers and synthetic receptors can be used as diagnostic layers to detect bacteria. In this work, an electrochemical aptasensor was developed for the ultrasensitive detection of A. baumannii by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The aptamer was immobilized on the surface of a CSPE modified with the nanocomposite Fe3O4@SiO2@Glyoxal (Gly) for selective and label-free detection of A. baumannii. The charge transfers resistance (Rct) between redox couple [Fe(CN)63-/4-] and the surface of aptasensor in the Nyquist plot of EIS study was used as electroanalytical signal for detection and determination of A. baumannii. The obtained results showed that the constructed aptasensor could specifically detect A. baumannii in the concentration range from 1.0 × 103-1.0 × 108 Colony-forming unit (CFU)/mL and with a detection limit of 150 CFU/mL (S/N = 3). In addition to its sensitivity, the biosensor exhibits high selectivity over some other pathogens. Therefore, a simple, inexpensive, rapid, label-free, selective, and sensitive electrochemical aptasensor was developed to detect A. baumannii.

A Strategy to Valorize a By-Product of Pine Wood (Pinus pinaster) for Copper Removal from Aqueous Solutions

This study describes the valorization of a pine wood by-product (Pinus pinaster) in the form of individualized fibers to a complex copper or more broadly metals present in an aqueous solution using a batch process. The adsorption results show that pine fibres activated by sodium carbonate are effective in recovering copper ions from monocontaminated or polycontaminated solutions of varying concentrations in a few minutes. One gram of material captures 2.5 mg of copper present in 100 mL of solution at pH 5 in less than 10 min. The results are perfectly reproducible and independent of pH between 3 and 5. The presence of the Na+ cation at concentrations of 0.1 M has no impact on material performance, unlike that of Ca2+ ions, which competes with Cu2+ ions for active sites. The adsorption process can be considered as rapid, as most of the copper is adsorbed within the first 10 min of exposure. Investigation of modeling possibilities shows some limitations. Indeed, the Weber and Morris and Elovich models show poor possibilities to describe all the kinetic data for copper adsorption on fibres. This may prove that the mechanism is far more complex than simple physisorption, chemisorption and/or diffusion. Complexation by wood fibers can be extended to solutions containing several types of metals. The results of this study show that the field of selective metal recovery could be a new way of valorizing by-products from the wood industry.

Preparation and Application of Magnetic Composites Using Controllable Assembly for Use in Water Treatment: A Review

The use of magnetic composites in wastewater treatment has become widespread due to their high flocculating characteristics and ferromagnetism. This review provides an analysis and summary of the preparation and application of magnetic composites through controllable assembly for use in wastewater treatment. The applications of magnetic composites include the treatment of dye wastewater, heavy metal wastewater, microalgae suspensions, and oily wastewater. Additionally, the recycling and regeneration of magnetic composites have been investigated. In the future, further research could be focused on improving the assembly and regeneration stability of magnetic composites, such as utilizing polymers with a multibranched structure. Additionally, it would be beneficial to explore the recycling and regeneration properties of these composites.

Fe3O4 modified chitosan based co-polymeric magnetic composite hydrogel: Synthesis, characterization and evaluation for the removal of methylene blue from aqueous solutions

The present research comprises the fabrication of magnetic Fe₃O₄ incorporated chitosan grafted acrylamide and N-vinylimidazole composite hydrogels (CANFe-1 to CANFe-7) via water mediated free radical polymerization technique using ammonium persulfate/tetramethyl ethylenediamine as initiator. The prepared magnetic composite hydrogel was characterized by FT-IR, TGA, SEM, XRD, and VSM analysis. A swelling study was performed to understand the swelling behavior and found CANFe-4 to be more efficient with maximum swelling hence entire removal studies were performed with CANFe-4. pH_PZC analysis was performed to determine pH sensitive adsorptive removal of cationic dye (methylene blue). pH dependent adsorption of methylene blue was dominant at pH = 8 with a maximum adsorption capacity of 860 mg/g. After the adsorptive removal of methylene blue from aqueous media, a composite hydrogel can conveniently be separated from the solution with the use of an external magnet. Adsorption of methylene blue is well explained with the Langmuir adsorption isotherm and Pseudo-Second-Order kinetic model that validates chemisorption. Moreover, it was found that CANFe-4 could be frequently applied for the adsorptive removal of methylene blue for 5 consecutive adsorption-desorption cycles with 92.4 % removal efficiency. Hence, CANFe-4 offers a promising recyclable, sustainable, robust, and efficient adsorbent for wastewater treatment.

Application of polyvinyl alcohol/chitosan copolymer hydrogels in biomedicine: A review

Hydrogels is a hydrophilic, cross-linked polymer of three-dimensional network structures. The application of hydrogels prepared from a single polymer in the biomedical field has many drawbacks. The functional blend of polyvinyl alcohol and chitosan allows hydrogels to have better and more desirable properties than those produced from a single polymer, which is a good biomaterial for development and design. In this paper, we have reviewed the progress in the application of polyvinyl alcohol/chitosan composite hydrogels in various medical fields, the different cross-linking agents and cross-linking methods, and the research progress in the optimization of composite hydrogels for their subsequent wide range of biomedical applications.

Bioremediation of Wastewater Using Yeast Strains: An Assessment of Contaminant Removal Efficiency

The main goal of wastewater treatment is to significantly reduce organic compounds, micronutrients (nitrogen and phosphorus) and heavy metals and other contaminants (pathogens, pharmaceuticals and industrial chemicals). In this work, the efficiency of removing different contaminants (COD, NO₃^-, NO₂^-, NH₄⁺, PO₄^3-, SO₄^2-, Pb²⁺, Cd²⁺) from synthetic wastewater was tested using five different yeast strains: Kluyveromyces marxianus CMGBP16 (P1), Saccharomyces cerevisiae S228C (P2), Saccharomyces cerevisiae CM6B70 (P3), Saccharomyces cerevisiae CMGB234 (P4) and Pichia anomala CMGB88 (P5). The results showed a removal efficiency of up to 70% of COD, 97% of nitrate, 80% of nitrite, 93% of phosphate and 70% of sulfate ions for synthetic wastewater contaminated with Pb²⁺ (43 mg/L) and Cd²⁺ ions (39 mg/L). In contrast, the results showed an increase in ammonium ions, especially in the presence of Pb²⁺ ions. The yeast strains showed a high capacity to reduce Pb²⁺ (up to 96%) and Cd²⁺ (up to 40%) ions compared to the initial concentrations. In presence of a crude biosurfactant, the removal efficiency increased up to 99% for Pb²⁺ and 56% for Cd²⁺ simultaneously with an increase in yeast biomass of up to 11 times. The results, which were obtained in the absence of aeration and in neutral pH conditions, proved a high potential for practical applications in the biotreatment of the wastewater and the recovery of Pb and Cd ions, with a high benefit-cost ratio.

Adsorption of Heavy Metal Ions Copper, Cadmium and Nickel by Microcystis aeruginosa

To investigate the treatment effect of algae biosorbent on heavy metal wastewater, in this paper, the adsorption effect of M. aeruginosa powder on heavy metal ions copper, cadmium and nickel was investigated using the uniform experimental method, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and TG-DSC comprehensive thermal analysis. The experimental results showed that the initial concentration of copper ion solution was 25 mg/L, the temperature was 30 °C, the pH value was 8 and the adsorption time was 5 h, which was the best condition for the removal of copper ions by algae powder adsorption, and the removal rate was 83.24%. The initial concentration of cadmium ion solution was 5 mg/L, the temperature was 35 °C, the pH value was 8 and the adsorption time was 4 h, which was the best condition for the adsorption of cadmium ion by algae powder, and the removal rate was 92.00%. The initial nickel ion solution concentration of 15 mg/L, temperature of 35 °C, pH value of 7 and adsorption time of 1 h were the best conditions for the adsorption of nickel ions by algae powder, and the removal rate was 88.67%. The spatial structure of algae powder changed obviously before and after adsorbing heavy metals. The functional groups such as amino and phosphate groups on the cell wall of M. aeruginosa enhanced the adsorption effect of heavy metal ions copper, cadmium and nickel. Additionally, M. aeruginosa adsorption of heavy metal ions copper, cadmium, nickel is an exothermic process. The above experiments show that M. aeruginosa can be used as a biological adsorbent to remove heavy metals, which lays a theoretical foundation for the subsequent treatment of heavy metal pollution by algae.

Synthesis of Gum Arabic Magnetic Nanoparticles for Adsorptive Removal of Ciprofloxacin: Equilibrium, Kinetic, Thermodynamics Studies, and Optimization by Response Surface Methodology

Given the increasing risks that antibiotic abuse poses to microecology and human health, it is imperative to develop incredibly powerful adsorbents. This study investigated the use of environmentally sustainable polymeric nanocomposite based on gum arabic (GA) and magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) synthesized via co-precipitation method to form gum arabic magnetitic nanoparticles (GA-MNPs) as an efficient adsorbent for ciprofloxacin (CIP) removal from aqueous solution. The physicochemical properties and morphology of the synthesized GA-MNPs were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and Energy Dispersive X-Ray Analysis (EDX). The experiment was designed by response surface methodology (RSM) and the Central Composite Design (CCD) was utilized to optimize the operating variables: contact time (0–120 min), pH (3–10), adsorbent dosage (0.10–0.40 g/L), and concentration of adsorbate (5–100 mg/L). Results showed that 96.30% was the maximum percentage of CIP removed. The adsorption effect of the CIP molecule on the surface of the GA-MNPs was investigated using regression analysis and analysis of variance. Furthermore, Freundlich Isotherm and Pseudo Second order kinetic equations have the highest consistency with experimental investigations suggesting double-layer adsorption. This implies that chemisorption was the mechanism involved. In addition, the calculated thermodynamic parameters were postulating an exothermic and spontaneous method in nature. Owing to its adsorption selectivity and recyclability, GA-MNPs could be classified as an environmentally friendly, less expensive, and highly efficient promising adsorbent for remediation of CIP from aqueous solution.

Characterization and Mechanistic Study of Heavy Metal Adsorption by Facile Synthesized Magnetic Xanthate-Modified Chitosan/Polyacrylic Acid Hydrogels

A simple method was used to synthesize magnetic xanthate-modified chitosan/polyacrylic acid hydrogels that were used to remove heavy metal ions from an aqueous solution. Xanthate modification of chitosan significantly improved adsorption performance: individual adsorption capacities of the hydrogel for Cu(II), Cd(II), Pb(II), and Co(II) ions were 206, 178, 168, and 140 mg g^-1, respectively. The magnetic hydrogels had good regeneration ability and were effectively separated from the solution by use of a magnet. Adsorption kinetic data showed that the removal mechanism of heavy metal ions from the solution by magnetic hydrogels occurs mainly by chemical adsorption. The equilibrium adsorption isotherms were well-described by the Freundlich and Langmuir equations. Positive values were found for the Gibbs standard free energy and enthalpy, indicating an increase in the disorder at the solid-liquid interface during adsorption. Magnetic xanthate-modified chitosan-based hydrogels that exhibit high adsorption efficiency, regeneration, and easy separation from a solution have broad development prospects in various industrial sewage and wastewater treatment fields.

Extraction of Palladium(II) with a Magnetic Sorbent Based on Polyvinyl Alcohol Gel, Metallic Iron, and an Environmentally Friendly Polydentate Phosphazene-Containing Extractant

In this work, a highly efficient and environmentally friendly method for extracting palladium from hydrochloric acid media was developed. The method uses a magnetic sorbent carrying an organophosphorus extractant, which is not washed from the sorbent into the aqueous phase. The extractant was characterized by 1H, 13C, and 31P NMR spectroscopy and MALDI TOF mass spectrometry, and the palladium complex based on it was characterized by IR spectroscopy. According to an in vitro microbiological study, the extractant was non-toxic to soil microflora. It was established that the water uptake and saturation magnetization of the magnetic sorbent were sufficient for use in sorption processes. The sorption efficiency of palladium(II) with the developed sorbent can reach 71% in one cycle. After treatment of the spent sorbent with 5 M hydrochloric acid, palladium was completely extracted from the sorbent. The new sorbent is proposed for the extraction of palladium from hydrochloric acid media obtained by the leaching of electronic waste.

Granulation of Nickel-Aluminum-Zirconium Complex Hydroxide Using Colloidal Silica for Adsorption of Chromium(VI) Ions from the Liquid Phase

We combined a nickel-aluminum-zirconium complex hydroxide (NAZ) with colloidal silica as a binder to prepare a granulated agent for adsorbing heavy metals from aqueous media. Three samples with different particle diameters were prepared to evaluate the effects on the properties: small (NAZ-S), medium (NAZ-M), and large (NAZ-L). We confirmed the granulation of the prepared samples at a binder content of 25%. NAZ-S had the largest specific surface area and number of hydroxyl groups, followed by NAZ-M and then NAZ-L. Regarding the adsorption capacity, NAZ-S adsorbed the most chromium(VI) ions followed by NAZ-M and then NAZ-L. The binding energy of Cr(2p) at 575-577 eV was detected after adsorption, and the effects of the temperature, contact time, and pH on the adsorption of chromium(VI) ions were evaluated. We identified the following adsorption mechanism: ion exchange with sulfate ions in the interlayer region of the NAZ samples. Finally, the chromium(VI) ions adsorbed by the NAZ samples were easily desorbed using a desorption solution. The results showed that NAZ offers great potential for the removal of chromium(VI) ions from aqueous solutions.
