Self-Assembly of Discrete Metallocycles versus Coordination Polymers Based on Cu(I) and Ag(I) Ions and Flexible Ligands: Structural Diversification and Luminescent Properties

The Methylene Spacer Matters: The Structural and Luminescent Effects of Positional Isomerism of n-Methylpyridyltriazole Carboxylate Semi-Rigid Ligands in the Structure of Zn(II) Based Coordination Polymers

Two Zn(II) coordination polymers (CPs) based on n-methylpyridyltriazole carboxylate semi-rigid organic ligands (n-MPTC), with n = 3 (L1) and 4 (L2), have been prepared at the water n-butanol interphase by reacting Zn(NO₃)₂·4H₂O with NaL1 and NaL2. This allows us to systematically investigate the influence of the isomeric positional effect on their structures. The organic ligands were obtained by saponification from their respective ester precursors ethyl-5-methyl-1-(pyridin-3-ylmethyl)-1H-1,2,3-triazole-4-carboxylate (P1) and ethyl-5-methyl-1-(pyridin-4-ylmethyl)-1H-1,2,3-triazole-4-carboxylate (P2), resulting in their corresponding sodium salt forms, 3-MPTC, and 4-MPTC. The structure of the Zn(II) CPs determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction reveals that both CPs have 2D supramolecular hydrogen bond networks. The 2D supramolecular network of [Zn(L1)]n (1) is built up by hydrogen bond interactions between oxygen and hydrogen atoms between neighboring n-methylpyridyltriazole molecules, whereas in [Zn(L2)·4H₂O]n (2) the water molecules link 1D polymeric chains forming a 2D supramolecular aggregate. The structures of 1 and 2 clearly show that the isomeric effect in the semi-rigid ligands plays a vital role in constructing the Zn(II) coordination polymers, helped by the presence of the methylene spacer group, in the final structural conformation. The structures of 1 and 2 significantly affect their luminescent properties. Thus, while 2 shows strong emission at room temperature centered at 367 nm, the emission of 1 is quenched substantially.

A study of structure-activity relationship and anion-controlled quinolinyl Ag(I) complexes as antimicrobial and antioxidant agents as well as their interaction with macromolecules

In this communication, we feature the synthesis and in-depth characterization of a series of silver(I) complexes obtained from the complexation of quinolin-4-yl Schiff base ligands ((E)-2-((quinolin-4-ylmethylene)amino)phenol L_a, 2-(quinolin-4-yl)benzo[d]thiazole L_b, (E)-N-(2-fluorophenyl)-1-(quinolin-4-yl)methanimine L_c, (E)-N-(4-chlorophenyl)-1-(quinolin-4-yl)methanimine L_d, (E)-1-(quinolin-4-yl)-N-(p-tolyl)methanimine L_e, (E)-1-(quinolin-4-yl)-N-(thiophen-2-ylmethyl)methanimine L_f) and three different silver(I) anions (nitrate, perchlorate and triflate). Structurally, the complexes adopted different coordination geometries, which included distorted linear or distorted tetrahedral geometry. The complexes were evaluated in vitro for their potential antibacterial and antioxidant activities. In addition, their interactions with calf thymus-DNA (CT-DNA) and bovine serum albumin (BSA) were evaluated. All the complexes had a wide spectrum of effective antibacterial activity against gram-positive and gram-negative bacterial and good antioxidant properties. The interactions of the complexes with CT-DNA and BSA were observed to occur either through intercalation or through a minor groove binder, while the interaction of the complexes with BSA reveals that some of the complexes can strongly quench the fluorescence of BSA through the static mechanism. The molecular docking studies of the complexes were also done to further elucidate the modes of interaction with CT-DNA and BSA.

Catalytic C-H Bond Activation and Knoevenagel Condensation Using Pyridine-2,3-Dicarboxylate-Based Metal-Organic Frameworks

Three 1D coordination polymers (CPs) [M(pdca)(H2O)2] n (M = Zn, Cd, and Co; 1-3), and a 3D coordination framework {[(CH3)2NH2][CuK(2,3-pdca)(pa)(NO3)2]} n (4) (2,3-pdca = pyridine-2,3-dicarboxylate and pa = picolinic acid), have been synthesized adopting a solvothermal reaction strategy. The CPs have been thoroughly characterized using various spectral techniques, that is, elemental analyses, FT-IR, TGA, DSC, UV/vis, and luminescence. Structural information on 1-4 was obtained by PXRD and X-ray single-crystal analyses, whereas morphological insights were attained through FESEM, AFM, EDX, HRTEM, and BET surface area analyses. Roughness parameters were calculated from AFM analysis, whereas dimensions of small domains and interplanar spacing were defined with the aid of HRTEM. CPs 1-3 are 1D isostructural networks, whereas 4 is a 3D framework. Moreover, 1-4 display moderate luminescence at rt. In addition, 1-4 have been applied as economic and efficient porous catalysts for the Knoevenagel condensation reaction and C-H bond activation under mild conditions with good yields (95-98 and 97-99%), respectively. Notably, 1-3 can be reused up to seven cycles, whereas 4 can be reused up to five catalytic cycles with retained catalytic efficiency. Relative catalytic efficacy toward the Knoevenagel condensation reaction follows in the order 2 > 1 > 3 > 4, whereas 2 > 4 > 1 > 3 for C-H activation. The present result demonstrates synthetic, structural, optical, morphological, and catalytic aspects of 1-4.

Quinoline Functionalized Schiff Base Silver (I) Complexes: Interactions with Biomolecules and In Vitro Cytotoxicity, Antioxidant and Antimicrobial Activities

A series of fifteen silver (I) quinoline complexes Q1-Q15 have been synthesized and studied for their biological activities. Q1-Q15 were synthesized from the reactions of quinolinyl Schiff base derivatives L1-L5 (obtained by condensing 2-quinolinecarboxaldehyde with various aniline derivatives) with AgNO₃, AgClO₄ and AgCF₃SO₃. Q1-Q15 were characterized by various spectroscopic techniques and the structures of [Ag(L1)₂]NO₃Q1, [Ag(L1)₂]ClO₄Q6, [Ag(L2)₂]ClO₄Q7, [Ag(L2)₂]CF₃SO₃Q12 and [Ag(L4)₂]CF₃SO₃Q14 were unequivocally determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. In vitro antimicrobial tests against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria revealed the influence of structure and anion on the complexes' moderate to excellent antibacterial activity. In vitro antioxidant activities of the complexes showed their good radical scavenging activity in ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP). Complexes with the fluorine substituent or the thiophene or benzothiazole moieties are more potent with IC₅₀ between 0.95 and 2.22 mg/mL than the standard used, ascorbic acid (2.68 mg/mL). The compounds showed a strong binding affinity with calf thymus-DNA via an intercalation mode and protein through a static quenching mechanism. Cytotoxicity activity was examined against three carcinoma cell lines (HELA, MDA-MB231, and SHSY5Y). [Ag(L2)₂]ClO₄Q7 with a benzothiazole moiety and [Ag(L4)₂]ClO₄Q9 with a methyl substituent had excellent cytotoxicity against HELA cells.

Aryl variation and anion effect on CT-DNA binding and in vitro biological studies of pyridinyl Ag(I) complexes

Synthesis and spectroscopic characterization of five ligands ((E)-2-((pyridin-2-ylmethylene)amino)phenol L1, 2-(pyridin-2-yl)benzo[d]thiazole L2, (E)-N-(2-fluorophenyl)-1-(pyridin-2-yl)methanimine L3, (E)-1-(pyridin-2-yl)-N-(p-tolyl)methanimine L4 and (E)-1-(pyridin-2-yl)-N-(thiophen-2-ylmethyl)methanimine L5 along with fifteen silver(I) complexes of L1 - L5, with a general formula [AgL₂]⁺X^- (L = Schiff base and X = NO₃^-, ClO₄^- or CF₃SO₃^-) is reported. The structures of complexes [Ag(L4)₂]NO₃, [Ag(L5)₂]NO₃, [Ag(L3)₂]ClO₄, [Ag(L4)₂]ClO₄ and [Ag(L5)₂]CF₃SO₃ were determined unequivocally by single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. Calf-thymus deoxyribonucleic acid (CT-DNA), bovine serum albumin (BSA) binding studies, antioxidant, and antibacterial studies were performed for all complexes. Complexes [Ag(L2)₂]NO₃, [Ag(L5)₂]NO₃, [Ag(L1)₂]ClO₄ and [Ag(L3)₂]ClO₄ whose ligands have an OH^- and F^- as substituents or with a thiophene or thiazole moiety showed better antibacterial activities with lower minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) values compared to the standard ciprofloxacin, against most of the bacterial strains tested. Similarly, complexes [Ag(L1)₂]NO_3,[Ag(L2)₂]NO_3,[Ag(L3)₂]NO₃ and [Ag(L5)₂]NO₃ with the NO₃^- anion, [Ag(L1)₂]ClO₄ and [Ag(L2)₂]ClO₄ with ClO₄^- anion, and [Ag(L5)₂]CF₃SO₃ with CF₃SO₃^- anion showed higher activities for antioxidant studies. Complexes [Ag(L4)₂]ClO₄ and [Ag(L4)₂]CF₃SO₃ with the Methyl substituent and CF₃SO₃^- as the anion, displayed high antioxidant activities in FRAP (ferric reducing antioxidant power) than the standard ascorbic acid. Spectroscopic studies of all the complexes revealed their moderate to high interaction with calf thymus DNA via an intercalation mode. In addition, the relatively moderate interaction of most of the complexes with BSA was through a static quenching mechanism.

Crystallization Induced Enhanced Emission in Two New Zn(II) and Cd(II) Supramolecular Coordination Complexes with the 1-(3,4-Dimethylphenyl)-5-Methyl-1H-1,2,3-Triazole-4-Carboxylate Ligand

Two new d¹⁰ metal supramolecular metal-organic frameworks (SMOFs) with general formula [ML₂(H₂O)₂]_n (M = Zn, Cd) have been synthetized using the sodium salt of the anionic 1-(3,4-dimethylphenyl)-5-methyl-1H-1,2,3-triazole-4-carboxylate ligand (Na⁺L^-). Both SMOFs have been structurally characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis and IR spectroscopy. The compounds are isostructural and form supramolecular aggregates via hydrogen bonds with the presence of less common dihydrogen bonds. Interestingly, they show ionic conductivity and porosity. The luminescent properties have been also studied by means of the excitation and emission spectra. Periodic DFT and molecular TD-DFT calculations have been used to unravel the emergence of luminescence in the otherwise non-emitting 1-(3,4-dimethylphenyl)-5-methyl-1H-1,2,3-triazole-4-carboxylate ligand once incorporated in the SMOFs. Our results also illustrate the importance of considering the dielectric environment in the crystal when performing excited state calculations for isolated fragments to capture the correct electronic character of the low-lying states, a practice which is not commonly adopted in the community.

Effects of non-covalent interactions on the electronic and electrochemical properties of Cu(i) biquinoline complexes

A Cu(i) complex {[Cu^I(biq)₂]ClO₄-biq} with biq = 2,2'-biquinoline was prepared, fully characterized and its properties compared with those of the well-known [Cu^I(biq)₂]ClO₄ complex. The crystal structures were obtained for both complexes (crystal structure for [Cu^I(biq)₂]ClO₄ has not been previously reported). Complex [Cu^I(biq)₂]ClO₄ crystallizes as a racemate where each enantiomer has a different τ₄ value while compound {[Cu^I(biq)₂]ClO₄-biq} crystallizes as a non-chiral supramolecular aggregate with an uncoordinated biq molecule forming a π-π stacking interaction with a coordinated biq. ¹H-NMR spectroscopy in non-coordinating solvents reveals that structures in solution are similar to those in the solid phase, confirming the presence of a supramolecular arrangement for compound {[Cu^I(biq)₂]ClO₄-biq}. The stability of the non-covalent aggregate in solution of {[Cu^I(biq)₂]ClO₄-biq} causes significant differences between the spectroscopic and electrochemical properties of {[Cu^I(biq)₂]ClO₄-biq} and [Cu^I(biq)₂]ClO₄.
