A Review of GPS Trajectories Classification Based on Transportation Mode

Estimation of trip purposes in public transport during the COVID-19 pandemic: The case of Santiago, Chile

The COVID-19 pandemic strongly affected the mobility of people. Several studies have quantified these changes, for example, measuring the effectiveness of quarantine measures and calculating the decrease in the use of public transport. Regarding the latter, however, a low level of understanding persists as to how the pandemic affected the distribution of trip purposes, hindering the design of policies aimed at increasing the demand for public transport in a post-pandemic era. To address this gap, in this article, we study how the purposes of trips made by public transport evolved during the COVID-19 pandemic in the city of Santiago, Chile. For this, we develop an XGBoost model using the latest available origin-destination survey as input. The calibrated model is applied to the information from smart payment cards during one week in 2018, 2020, and 2021. The results show that during the week of maximum restriction, that is, during 2020, the distribution of trips by purpose varied considerably, with the proportion of trips to work increasing, recreational trips decreasing, and trips for health purposes remaining unchanged. In sociodemographic terms, in the higher-income communes, the decrease in the proportion of trips for work purposes was much greater than that in the communes with lower income. Finally, with the gradual return to in-person activities in 2021, the distribution of trip purposes returned to values similar to those before the pandemic, although with a lower total amount, which suggests that unless relevant measures are taken, the low use of public transportation could be permanent.

A Study on the Geometric and Kinematic Descriptors of Trajectories in the Classification of Ship Types

The classification of ships based on their trajectory descriptors is a common practice that is helpful in various contexts, such as maritime security and traffic management. For the most part, the descriptors are either geometric, which capture the shape of a ship's trajectory, or kinematic, which capture the motion properties of a ship's movement. Understanding the implications of the type of descriptor that is used in classification is important for feature engineering and model interpretation. However, this matter has not yet been deeply studied. This article contributes to feature engineering within this field by introducing proper similarity measures between the descriptors and defining sound benchmark classifiers, based on which we compared the predictive performance of geometric and kinematic descriptors. The performance profiles of geometric and kinematic descriptors, along with several standard tools in interpretable machine learning, helped us to provide an account of how different ships differ in movement. Our results indicated that the predictive performance of geometric and kinematic descriptors varied greatly, depending on the classification problem at hand. We also showed that the movement of certain ship classes solely differed geometrically while some other classes differed kinematically and that this difference could be formulated in simple terms. On the other hand, the movement characteristics of some other ship classes could not be delineated along these lines and were more complicated to express. Finally, this study verified the conjecture that the geometric-kinematic taxonomy could be further developed as a tool for more accessible feature selection.

Machine learned daily life history classification using low frequency tracking data and automated modelling pipelines: application to North American waterfowl

BACKGROUND

Identifying animal behaviors, life history states, and movement patterns is a prerequisite for many animal behavior analyses and effective management of wildlife and habitats. Most approaches classify short-term movement patterns with high frequency location or accelerometry data. However, patterns reflecting life history across longer time scales can have greater relevance to species biology or management needs, especially when available in near real-time. Given limitations in collecting and using such data to accurately classify complex behaviors in the long-term, we used hourly GPS data from 5 waterfowl species to produce daily activity classifications with machine-learned models using "automated modelling pipelines".

METHODS

Automated pipelines are computer-generated code that complete many tasks including feature engineering, multi-framework model development, training, validation, and hyperparameter tuning to produce daily classifications from eight activity patterns reflecting waterfowl life history or movement states. We developed several input features for modeling grouped into three broad categories, hereafter "feature sets": GPS locations, habitat information, and movement history. Each feature set used different data sources or data collected across different time intervals to develop the "features" (independent variables) used in models.

RESULTS

Automated modelling pipelines rapidly developed easily reproducible data preprocessing and analysis steps, identification and optimization of the best performing model and provided outputs for interpreting feature importance. Unequal expression of life history states caused unbalanced classes, so we evaluated feature set importance using a weighted F1-score to balance model recall and precision among individual classes. Although the best model using the least restrictive feature set (only 24 hourly relocations in a day) produced effective classifications (weighted F1 = 0.887), models using all feature sets performed substantially better (weighted F1 = 0.95), particularly for rarer but demographically more impactful life history states (i.e., nesting).

CONCLUSIONS

Automated pipelines generated models producing highly accurate classifications of complex daily activity patterns using relatively low frequency GPS and incorporating more classes than previous GPS studies. Near real-time classification is possible which is ideal for time-sensitive needs such as identifying reproduction. Including habitat and longer sequences of spatial information produced more accurate classifications but incurred slight delays in processing.

Estimation of the Origin-Destination Matrix for Trucks That Use Highways: A Case Study in Chile

Nowadays, freight transport is crucial in the functioning of cities worldwide. To dig further into the understanding of urban freight transport movements, in this research, we conducted a case study in which we estimated an origin-destination matrix for the trucks traveling on Autopista Central, one of Santiago de Chile’s most important urban highways. To do so, we used full real-world vehicle-by-vehicle information of freight vehicles’ movements along the highway. This data was collected from several toll collection gates equipped with free-flow and automatic vehicle identification technology. However, this data did not include any vehicle information before or after using the highway. To estimate the origins and destinations of these trips, we proposed a multisource methodology that used GPS information provided by SimpliRoute, a Chilean routing company. Nevertheless, this GPS data involved only a small subset of trucks that used the highway. In order to reduce the bias, we built a decision tree model for estimating the trips’ origin, whose input data was complemented by other public databases. Furthermore, we computed trip destinations using proportionality factors obtained from SimpliRoute data. Our results showed that most of the estimated origins belonged to outskirt municipalities, while the estimated destinations were mainly located in the downtown area. Our findings might help improve freight transport comprehension in the city, enabling the implementation of focused transport policies and investments to help mitigate negative externalities, such as congestion and pollution.

On the Challenges and Potential of Using Barometric Sensors to Track Human Activity

Barometers are among the oldest engineered sensors. Historically, they have been primarily used either as environmental sensors to measure the atmospheric pressure for weather forecasts or as altimeters for aircrafts. With the advent of microelectromechanical system (MEMS)-based barometers and their systematic embedding in smartphones and wearable devices, a vast breadth of new applications for the use of barometers has emerged. For instance, it is now possible to use barometers in conjunction with other sensors to track and identify a wide range of human activity classes. However, the effectiveness of barometers in the growing field of human activity recognition critically hinges on our understanding of the numerous factors affecting the atmospheric pressure, as well as on the properties of the sensor itself-sensitivity, accuracy, variability, etc. This review article thoroughly details all these factors and presents a comprehensive report of the numerous studies dealing with one or more of these factors in the particular framework of human activity tracking and recognition. In addition, we specifically collected some experimental data to illustrate the effects of these factors, which we observed to be in good agreement with the findings in the literature. We conclude this review with some suggestions on some possible future uses of barometric sensors for the specific purpose of tracking human activities.

Magnetic Field Gradient-Based EKF for Velocity Estimation in Indoor Navigation

This paper proposes an advanced solution to improve the inertial velocity estimation of a rigid body, for indoor navigation, through implementing a magnetic field gradient-based Extended Kalman Filter (EKF). The proposed estimation scheme considers a set of data from a triad of inertial sensors (accelerometer and gyroscope), as well as a determined arrangement of magnetometers array. The inputs for the estimation scheme are the spatial derivatives of the magnetic field, from the magnetometers array, and the attitude, from the inertial sensors. As shown in the literature, there is a strong relation between the velocity and the measured magnetic field gradient. However, the latter usually suffers from high noises. Then, the novelty of the proposed EKF is to develop a specific equation to describe the dynamics of the magnetic field gradient. This contribution helps to filter, first, the magnetic field and its gradient and second, to better estimate the inertial velocity. Some numerical simulations that are based on an open source database show the targeted improvements. At the end of the paper, this approach is extended to position estimation in the case of a foot-mounted application and the results are very promising.

GPS Trajectory Completion Using End-to-End Bidirectional Convolutional Recurrent Encoder-Decoder Architecture with Attention Mechanism

GPS datasets in the big data regime provide rich contextual information that enable efficient implementation of advanced features such as navigation, tracking, and security in urban computing systems. Understanding the hidden patterns in large amount of GPS data is critically important in ubiquitous computing. The quality of GPS data is the fundamental key problem to produce high quality results. In real world applications, certain GPS trajectories are sparse and incomplete; this increases the complexity of inference algorithms. Few of existing studies have tried to address this problem using complicated algorithms that are based on conventional heuristics; this requires extensive domain knowledge of underlying applications. Our contribution in this paper are two-fold. First, we proposed deep learning based bidirectional convolutional recurrent encoder-decoder architecture to generate the missing points of GPS trajectories over occupancy grid-map. Second, we interfaced attention mechanism between enconder and decoder, that further enhance the performance of our model. We have performed the experiments on widely used Microsoft geolife trajectory dataset, and perform the experiments over multiple level of grid resolutions and multiple lengths of missing GPS segments. Our proposed model achieved better results in terms of average displacement error as compared to the state-of-the-art benchmark methods.

Feature-First Add-On for Trajectory Simplification in Lifelog Applications

Lifelog is a record of one’s personal experiences in daily lives. User’s location is one of the most common information for logging a human’s life. By understanding one’s spatial mobility we can figure out other pieces of context such as businesses and activities. With GPS technology we can collect accurate spatial and temporal details of a movement. However, most GPS receivers generate a huge amount of data making it difficult to process and store such data. In this paper, we develop a generic add-on algorithm, feature-first trajectory simplification, to simplify trajectory data in lifelog applications. It is based on a simple sliding window mechanism counting occurrence of certain conditions. By automatically identifying feature points such as signal lost and found, stall, and turn, the proposed scheme provides rich context more than spatio-temporal information of a trajectory. In experiments with a case study of commuting in personal vehicles, we evaluate the effectiveness of the scheme. We find the proposed scheme significantly enhances existing simplification algorithms preserving much richer context of a trajectory.

Interactive, Multiscale Urban-Traffic Pattern Exploration Leveraging Massive GPS Trajectories

Urban traffic pattern reflects how people move and how goods are transported, which is crucial for traffic management and urban planning. With the development of sensing techniques, accumulated sensor data are captured for monitoring vehicles, which also present the opportunities of big transportation data, especially for real-time interactive traffic pattern analysis. We propose a three-layer framework for the recognition and visualization of multiscale traffic patterns. The first layer computes the middle-tier synopses at fine spatial and temporal scales, which are indexed and stored in a geodatabase. The second layer uses synopses to efficiently extract multiscale traffic patterns. The third layer supports real-time interactive visual analytics for intuitive explorations by end users. An experiment in Shenzhen on taxi GPS trajectories that were collected over one month was conducted. Multiple traffic patterns are recognized and visualized in real-time. The results show the satisfactory performance of proposed framework in traffic analysis, which will facilitate traffic management and operation.
