Abstract
Resource depletion and climate changes due to human activities and excessive burning of fossil fuels are the driving forces to explore alternatives clean energy resources. Anaerobic digestion of bio-waste provides a unique opportunity to fulfil this objective through biogas production. The present study aimed to evaluate waste hot-pot oil (WHPO) at different feeding ratios as a novel lipidic waste for anaerobic mono-digestion. The highest recorded maximum biomethane potential (Mmax) was 274.1 L kg-1 VS at 1.2% WHPO, which showed significant differences with those of 0.8% and 1.6% (227.09 and 237.62 L kg-1 VS, respectively). The changes in volatile fatty acids (VFAs), medium chain fatty acids (MCFAs), and long-chain fatty acids (LCFAs) as intermediates of WHPO decomposition were investigated before and after anaerobic digestion. Results showed efficient production and utilization of VFAs at all studied WHPO ratios, whereas the maximum utilization of VFAs (90-95%) was recorded in the reactors with up to 1.2 %WHPO. Although lipid conversion efficiency decreased by increasing the WHPO ratio, 81.2% lipid conversion efficiency was recorded at the highest applied WHPO treatment, which confirms the potential of WHPO as a promising feedstock for anaerobic digestion. The present results will have major implications towards efficient energy recovery and biochemical management of lipidic-waste through efficient anaerobic digestion.

Abstract
The oolong tea aroma is shown to consist of cultivar aroma and technical aroma in this study based on the aroma differences between oolong tea products of cultivars of different suitability, as determined by correlation analysis of olfactory, sensory, electronic nose, and GC-MS data. Human senses were significantly affected by the aroma components, which included eight terpene metabolites (β-Ocimene, (Z)-Furan linalool oxide, linalool, (3E)-4,8-Dimethyl-1,3,7-nonatriene, (E)-Pyranoid linalool oxide, γ-Elemene, Humulene, (Z,E)-α-Farnesene), three carotenoid metabolites (β-Ionone, (Z)-Geranylacetone and 6-methyl-5-Hepten -2-one), three lipid metabolites ((Z)-3-Hexenyl (Z)-3-hexenoate, Butanoic acid hexyl ester, and (Z)-Jasmone), four amino acid metabolites (Methyl salicylate, Geranyl isovalerate, indole, and Phenylethyl alcohol), and six thermal reaction products (2-Pentylfuran, Octanal, Decanal, (E,E)-2,4-Nonadienal, (Z)-2-Decenal, and (E)-2-Undecenal). Meanwhile, several aroma compounds (such as (E)-Nerolidol and α-Farnesene), mainly comprising the “technical aroma” formed in the processing mode, were noted to be less closely related to cultivar suitability. This study sheds light on the aroma characteristics of different tea cultivars for oolong tea processing.

Abstract
Simple Summary In recent decades, remarkable progress in the development of electronic nose (EN) technologies, particularly for disease detection, has been accomplished through the disclosure of novel methods and associated devices, mainly for the detection of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Herein, we assessed the ability of a novel EN technology (MENT-EGAS prototype) to respond to direct sampling and to evaluate the influence of possible error sources that might affect the quality of VOC signatures. Principal Component Analyses (PCA) evidenced the presence in the analyzed samples of sufficient information to consent the discrimination of different environmental backgrounds, feed headspaces and exhalated breath between two groups of cows fed with two different types of feed. Moreover, discrimination was also observed within the same group between exhalated breaths sampled before and after feed intake. Based on these findings, we provided evidence that the MENT-EGAS prototype can identify error sources with accuracy. Livestock precision farming technologies are powerful tools for monitoring animal health and welfare parameters in a continuous and automated way. Abstract Electronic nose devices (EN) have been developed for detecting volatile organic compounds (VOCs). This study aimed to assess the ability of the MENT-EGAS prototype-based EN to respond to direct sampling and to evaluate the influence of possible error sources that might affect the quality of VOC signatures. This study was performed on a dairy farm using 11 (n = 11) multiparous Holstein-Friesian cows. The cows were divided into two groups housed in two different barns: group I included six lactating cows fed with a lactating diet (LD), and group II included 5 non-lactating late pregnant cows fed with a far-off diet (FD). Each group was offered 250 g of their respective diet; 10 min later, exhalated breath was collected for VOC determination. After this sampling, 4 cows from each group were offered 250 g of pellet concentrates. Ten minutes later, the exhalated breath was collected once more. VOCs were also measured directly from the feed’s headspace, as well as from the environmental backgrounds of each. Principal component analyses (PCA) were performed and revealed clear discrimination between the two different environmental backgrounds, the two different feed headspaces, the exhalated breath of groups I and II cows, and the exhalated breath within the same group of cows before and after the feed intake. Based on these findings, we concluded that the MENT-EGAS prototype can recognize several error sources with accuracy, providing a novel EN technology that could be used in the future in precision livestock farming.

Abstract
Machine learning algorithms play an important role in fault detection and fault diagnosis of gas sensor arrays. Because the gas sensor array will see stability degradation and a shift in output signal amplitude under long-term operation, it is very important to detect the abnormal output signal of the gas sensor array in time and achieve accurate fault location. In order to solve the problem of low detection accuracy of micro-faults in gas sensor arrays, this paper adopts the serial principal component analysis (SPCA) method, which combines the advantages of principal component analysis (PCA) in the linear part and the advantages of kernel principal component analysis (KPCA) in the nonlinear part. The experimental results show that this method is more sensitive to micro-faults and has better fault detection accuracy than the fault detection methods of PCA and KPCA. In addition, in order to solve the current problem of low accuracy of multiple-fault isolation, a SPCA-based reconstruction contribution fault isolation method is proposed in this paper. The experimental results show that this method has higher fault isolation accuracy than the method based on contribution graph.

Abstract
Development of electronic technologies for precise identification of fruit crop cultivars in agricultural production provides an effective means for assuring product quality and authentication. The capabilities of discriminating between grape (Vitis vinifera L.) cultivars is essential for assuring certification of varieties sold in world markets. Machine olfaction, based on electronic-nose (e-nose) technologies, is readily available for rapid identification of fruit and vegetative agricultural products. This technology relies on detection of and discrimination between volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions from plant parts. It may be used in all stages of agricultural production to facilitate crop maintenance, cultivation, and harvesting decisions prior to marketing. An experimental e-nose device was constructed and tested in combination with five chemometric methods, including PCA, LDA, QDA, SVM, and ANN, as rapid, non-destructive tools for identification and classification of grape cultivars. An e-nose instrument equipped with nine metal oxide semiconductor (MOS) sensors was utilized to identify and classify five grape cultivars based on leaf VOC emissions using supervised and non-supervised methods. Grape leaf samples were first identified as belonging to specific cultivar types using PCA analyses, which are non-supervised classification methods, with the first two principal components (PC-1 and PC-2) accounting for 89% of the total variance. Four supervised statistical methods were further tested, including DA, QDA, SVM, and ANN, and provided effective discrimination accuracies of 98%, 99%, 92%, and 99%, respectively. These findings confirmed the suitable applicability of an MOS e-nose sensor array with supervised methods for accurate identification of grape cultivars, which is useful for authentication of vine cultivar types for commercial markets.

Abstract
The aim of the study was to analyze the process of roasting coffee beans in a convection–conduction roaster (CC) without a heat exchanger and a convection–conduction–radiation roaster (CCR) with a heat exchanger for determination of the aroma profile. The aroma profile was analyzed using the SPME/GC-MS technique, and an Agrinose electronic nose was used to determine the aroma profile intensity. Arabica coffee beans from five regions of the world, namely, Peru, Costa Rica, Ethiopia, Guatemala, and Brazil, were the research material. The chemometric analyses revealed the dominance of azines, alcohols, aldehydes, hydrazides, and acids in the coffee aroma profile. Their share distinguished the aroma profiles depending on the country of origin of the coffee beans. The high content of pyridine from the azine group was characteristic for the coffee roasting process in the convection–conduction roaster without a heat exchanger, which was shown by the PCA analysis. The increased content of pyridine resulted from the appearance of coal tar, especially in the CC roaster. Pyridine has an unpleasant and bitter plant-like odor, and its excess is detrimental to the human organism. The dominant and elevated content of pyridine is a defect of the coffee roasting process in the CC roaster compared to the process carried out in the CCR machine. The results obtained with the Agrinose showed that the CC roasting method had a significant effect on the sensor responses. The effect of coal tar on the coffee beans resulted in an undesirable aroma profile characterized by increased amounts of aromatic volatile compounds and higher responses of Agrinose sensors.

Abstract
The type and concentration of dissolved gases in transformer insulating oil are used to assess transformer conditions. In this paper, an online detection setup for measuring the concentration of multicomponent gases dissolved in transformer insulating oil is developed, which consists of an oil-gas separation system and an optical system for acquiring the transformer status in real time. The oil-gas separation system uses low pressure, constant temperature, and low-frequency stirring as working conditions for degassing large-volume oil samples based on modified headspace degassing. The optical system uses tunable diode laser absorption spectroscopy (TDLAS) to determine the gas concentration. Six target gases (methane, ethylene, ethane, acetylene, carbon monoxide, and carbon dioxide) were detected by three near-infrared lasers (1569, 1684, and 1532 nm). The stability of the optical system was improved by the common optical path formed by time-division multiplexing (TDM) technology. The calibration experiments show that the second harmonics and the concentrations of the six gases are linear. A comparison experiment with gas chromatography (GC) demonstrates that the error of acetylene reaches the nL/L level, while the other gases reach the μL/L level. The data conforms to the power industry testing standards, and the state of the transformer is analyzed by the detected six characteristic gases. The setup provides an effective basis for the online detection of dissolved gas in transformer insulating oil.

Abstract
Californian-style black olives require a sterilization treatment that produces a carcinogenic contaminant, acrylamide. Thus, this compound was evaluated in two different olive cultivars using an electronic nose (E-nose). The sterilization intensity had a significant influence on the final phenol concentrations, acrylamide content, and volatile compounds. Increasing the sterilization intensity from 10 to 26 min (F0) reduced the phenol content, but it promoted acrylamide synthesis, leading to a wide range of this toxic substance. The Ester and phenol groups of volatile compounds decreased their content when the sterilization treatment increased; however, aldehyde and other volatile compound groups significantly increased their contents according to the thermal treatments. The compounds 4-ethenyl-pyridine, benzaldehyde, and 2,4-dimethyl-hexane are volatile compounds with unpleasant odours and demonstrated a high amount of influence on the differences found after the application of the thermal treatments. The “Manzanilla Cacereña” variety presented the highest amount of phenolic compounds and the lowest acrylamide content. Finally, it was found that acrylamide content is correlated with volatile compounds, which was determined using multiple linear regression analysis (R2 = 0.9994). Furthermore, the aroma of table olives was analysed using an E-nose, and these results combined with Partial Least Square (PLS) were shown to be an accurate method (range to error ratio (RER) >10 and ratio of performance to deviation (RPD) >2.5) for the indirect quantification of this toxic substance.

Abstract
Machine learning methods enable the electronic nose (E-Nose) for precise odor identification with both qualitative and quantitative analysis. Advanced machine learning methods are crucial for the E-Nose to gain high performance and strengthen its capability in many applications, including robotics, food engineering, environment monitoring, and medical diagnosis. Recently, many machine learning techniques have been studied, developed, and integrated into feature extraction, modeling, and gas sensor drift compensation. The purpose of feature extraction is to keep robust pattern information in raw signals while removing redundancy and noise. With the extracted feature, a proper modeling method can effectively use the information for prediction. In addition, drift compensation is adopted to relieve the model accuracy degradation due to the gas sensor drifting. These recent advances have significantly promoted the prediction accuracy and stability of the E-Nose. This review is engaged to provide a summary of recent progress in advanced machine learning methods in E-Nose technologies and give an insight into new research directions in feature extraction, modeling, and sensor drift compensation.

Abstract
The lipid oxidation of fats and oils leads to volatile organic compounds, having a decisive influence on the sensory quality of foods. To understand formation and degradation pathways and to evaluate the suitability of lipid-derived aldehydes as marker substances for the oxidative status of foods, the formation of secondary and tertiary lipid oxidation compounds was investigated with gas chromatography in rapeseed oils. After 120 min, up to 65 compounds were detected. In addition to secondary degradation products, tertiary products such as alkyl furans, ketones, and aldol condensation products were also found. The comparison of rapeseed oils, differing in their initial peroxide values, showed that the formation rate of secondary compounds was higher in pre-damaged oils. Simultaneously, a faster degradation, especially of unsaturated aldehydes, was observed. Consequently, the formation of tertiary products (e.g., alkyl furans, aldol adducts) from well-known lipid oxidation products (i.e., propanal, hexanal, 2-hexenal, and 2-nonenal) was investigated in model systems. The experiments showed that these compounds form the new substances in subsequent reactions, especially, when other compounds such as phospholipids are present. Hexanal and propanal are suitable as marker compounds in the early phase of lipid oxidation, but at an advanced stage they are subject to aldol condensation. Consequently, the detection of tertiary degradation products needs to be considered in advanced lipid oxidation.

Abstract
The key aroma compounds in the pre- and postrigor roasted mutton were studied in this study. The results showed that 33 and 30 odorants were detected in the pre- and postrigor roasted mutton, respectively. Eight aroma compounds, including 3-methylbutanal, pentanal, hexanal, heptanal, octanal, nonanal, 1-octen-3-ol, and 2-pentylfuran, were confirmed as key odorants by aroma recombination and omission experiments. The aroma profiles of pre- and postrigor roasted mutton both presented great fatty, roasty, meaty, grassy, and sweet odors. Particularly, the concentrations of hexanal, heptanal, octanal, nonanal, 1-octen-3-ol, and 2-pentylfuran in postrigor roasted mutton were significantly higher (p < 0.05) than those in the prerigor roasted mutton. The postrigor back strap was more suitable for roasting than the prerigor back strap. The pre- and postrigor roasted mutton could be obviously discriminated based on the aroma compounds by orthogonal partial least squares discrimination analysis (OPLS-DA) and principal component analysis (PCA). Hexanal and 1-octen-3-ol might potential markers for the discrimination of the pre- and postrigor roasted mutton.

Abstract
Volatile sulfur-containing compounds (VSCs) provide an important contribution to foods due to their special odors. In this study, VSCs in 21 cold-pressed rapeseed oils (CROs) from 9 regions in China were extracted and separated by headspace solid-phase microextraction combined with gas chromatography coupled with sulfur chemiluminescence detection. 19 VSCs were identified by authentic standards, and the total concentration of VSCs in all CROs ranged from 49.0 to 18129 μg/kg. Dimethyl sulfide (DMS), with its high odor activity value (7-14574), was the most significant aroma contributor to the CROs. Furthermore, S-methylmethionine (SMM) in rapeseed was first affirmed by ultra-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry and isotope quantitation. The positive correlation coefficient between DMS and SMM was 0.793 (p < 0.05), which confirmed SMM as a crucial precursor of DMS in CROs. This study provided a theoretical basis for selecting rapeseed materials by the distribution of essential VSCs and the source of DMS.

Abstract
The organoleptic profile of a Virgin Olive Oil is a key quality parameter that is currently obtained by human sensory panels. The development of an instrumental technique capable of providing information about this profile quickly and online is of great interest. This work employed a general purpose e-nose, in lab conditions, to predict the level of fruity aroma and the presence of defects in Virgin Olive Oils. The raw data provided by the e-nose were used to extract a set of features that fed a regressor to predict the level of fruity aroma and a classifier to detect the presence of defects. The results obtained were a mean validation error of 0.5 units for the prediction of fruity aroma using lasso regression; and 88% accuracy for the defect detection using logistic regression. Finally, the identification of two out of ten specific sensors of the e-nose that can provide successful results paves the way to the design of low-cost specific electronic noses for this application.

Abstract
The aim of the study was to determine the correlation between the mechanical resistance of iris seed capsules and seeds to Mononychus punctumalbum foraging. The principal component analysis (PCA) demonstrated that the first main component referred to the variety type in 68%, and the second main component described the stage of the ontogenetic development of the plant in 26%. As indicated by the values of each parameter measured, all the parameters were found to exert a strong impact on the variability of the analyzed system. The occurrence of weevil infestation was also strongly but negatively correlated with seed wall thickness and capsule wall thickness. There was a correlation of seed max load and seed mass with the occurrence of the weevil. The analysis of the mechanical resistance of iris seed capsules (in June 9.28 N and September 6.27 N for I. sibirica and in June 6.59 N and September 2.94 N for I. aphylla) and seeds (in June 15.97 N and September 344.90 N for I. sibirica and in June 16.60 N and September 174.46 N for I. aphylla) showed significant differences between the terms and species. The PCA analysis revealed that the first variable was correlated with the occurrence of weevil foraging.
