Optimization of Food Waste and Biochar In-Vessel Co-Composting

Effect of forest-based biochar on maturity indices and bio-availability of heavy metals during the composting process of organic fraction of municipal solid waste (OFMSW)

The main objective of this study was to investigate the effect of biochar on the composting process of the organic fraction of municipal solid waste (OFMSW) under real conditions. Different doses of biochar (1%, 3%, and 5%) were mixed with compost piles to evaluate the variation of temperature, moisture content (MC), organic matter (OM), carbon (C), nitrogen (N), C/N ratio, and heavy metal (HM) contents in comparison with the control treatment (with 0% biochar addition). The results of this study showed that the compost piles combined with different doses of biochar had higher MC. The use of biochar as an additive, even at low doses (1%), was able to increase the compost quality through the reduction of N losses during the composting process. The highest reduction of OM during the composting process was observed in the control pile (without biochar addition) by 48.06%, whereas biochar affected the biodegradability of OM and prevented the reduction of nutrients during the composting process under real conditions. The contents of HMs (Pb, Zn, Ni, Cd, and Cu) showed a significant reduction in all of the compost piles combined with biochar in comparison with the control treatment. Considering that in terms of all compost quality indicators, the piles combined with biochar can regarded as high standard product, the composts obtained from combining the OFMSW with different biochar doses have desirable features to be used as an amendment agent to improve agricultural soil quality.

Biochar as smart organic catalyst to regulate bacterial dynamics during food waste composting

The impact of wheat straw biochar (WSB) on bacterial dynamics succession during food waste (FW) composting was analyzed. Six treatments [0(T1), 2.5(T2), 5 (T3), 7.5 (T4), 10 (T5), and 15 %(T6)] dry weight WSB were used with FW and saw dust for composting. At the highest thermal peak at 59 ℃ in T6, the pH varied from 4.5 to 7.3, and electrical conductivity among the treatments varied from 1.2 to 2.0 mScm¹. Firmicutes (25-97 %), Proteobacteria (8-45 %), and Bacteroidota (5-50 %) were among the dominate phyla of the treatments. Whereas, Bacillus (5-85 %), Limoslactobacillus (2-40 %), and Sphingobacterium (2-32 %) were highest among the identified genus in treatments but surprisingly Bacteroides was in greater abundance in the control treatments. Moreover, heatmap constructed with 35 various genera in all the treatments showed that Gammaproteobacterial genera contributed in large proportion after 42 days in T6. Additionally, a dynamic shift from Lactobacillus fermentum to higher abundance of Bacillus thermoamylovorans was reported on 42 days of FW composting. Biochar 15 % amendment can improve FW composting by influencing bacterial dynamics.

Feasibility of sewage sludge and food waste aerobic co-composting: Physicochemical properties, microbial community structures, and contradiction between microbial metabolic activity and safety risks

Co-composting of sludge and food waste eliminates the disadvantages of composting these waste products separately. Specifically, co-composing neutralizes the pollutants and improves the organic matter that occur in sewage sludge, and solves the problem of the low pH values and high moisture content of food waste. However, little is known about the functional microorganisms, microbial metabolic capacity, and biosecurity risks involved in sewage sludge and food waste co-composting. Therefore, this study established four lab-scale composting reactors [T1 (separate composting of food waste), T2 (separate composting of sewage sludge), T3 (sewage sludge and food waste co-composting at a C/N ratio of 25), and T4 (equal proportions composting of sewage sludge and food waste)] to assess the feasibility of sewage sludge and food waste aerobic co-composting. Our findings indicated that polysaccharides and proteins in T3 could be effectively degraded, and the total nutrient levels in T3 were higher than those in the other groups. After composting, the microbial diversity and richness of T3 were higher than that of T1. In later composting stages, the functional microorganisms in T1 maintained higher metabolic activity, however, it also had a higher biosecurity risk than T3 due to the presence of pathogenic bacteria such as Enterococcus_faecalis and Bacillus_circulan. Although the product of T3 could not be used as a microbial fertilizer, its biosecurity risk was lower than that of T1 and could therefore be used as an organic fertilizer. Redundancy analysis (RDA) results indicated that changing the microbial community structure by adjusting key environmental factors could improve composting quality and reduce microbial safety risks. Collectively, our results provide a theoretical basis for the development of co-composting strategies for the biodegradation of perishable solid organic waste, in addition to proposing the risk of pathogenic bacteria exposure that could endanger human and animal health.

Impacts of gasification biochar and its particle size on the thermal behavior of organic waste co-composting process

This work investigates the effects of gasification biochar on the thermal behavior of organic municipal waste composting. Two different biochar granulometries were mixed in a 3% w/w share with the organic fraction of municipal waste and tested in nine (three per thesis and three as control) reactors of 1 m³ of volume, designed to simulate full-scale aerated static piles. The temperatures of each composter were monitored for 31 days of the active composting phase and used as key parameters for air flow tuning. After the active phase was completed, the air was turned off and the temperatures were monitored for an additional 31 days during compost maturation. Results show that biochar-aided composters run 4 °C hotter and are more stable in temperature compared to the control thesis. Experimental data were used as a basis for thermal energy modeling: the addition of fine biochar to composting material increased the thermal energy production by 0.5 MJ kg^-1 compared to the control thesis; coarse biochar increased the thermal energy production by 0.4 MJ kg^-1. The standard composting process, without biochar, produced 2.5 MJ kg^-1. Results might serve as a starting point for further considerations in terms of composting time reduction, improvement of the final product and reduction of process related issues, such as undesired anaerobic decomposition, leachate production and temperature instability.

Dynamics of fungal species related to nitrogen transformation and their network patterns during cattle manure-corn straw with biochar composting

Fungi are reputed to play a significant role in the composting matrix as decomposers of recalcitrant organic materials like cellulose and lignin. However, information on the fungi communities' roles in nitrogen transformation under a compost-biochar mixture is scarce. This study investigated shifts in fungal species mediating N transformation and their network patterns in cattle manure-corn straw (CMCS) and CMCS plus biochar (CMCB) composting using high-throughput sequencing data. The results revealed that the addition of biochar altered fungal richness and diversity and significantly influenced their compositions during composting. Biochar also altered the compost fungal network patterns; CMCS had a more complex network with higher positive links than CMCB, suggesting stable niche overlap. The consistent agreement of multivariate analyses (redundancy, network, regression, Mantel and path analyses) indicated that Ciliophora_sp in CMCS and unclassified_norank_Pleosporales in CMCB were the key fungal species mediating total N transformation, whereas Scedosporium_prolificans in CMCS and unclassified_Microascaceae in CMCB were identified as major predictive indices determining NO₃^--N transformation. Also, Coprinopsis cinerea and Penicillium oxalicum were the predictive factors for NH₄⁺-N transformation in CMCS and CMCB during composting. These results indicated that the effects of biochar on N conversions in composting could be unraveled using multivariate analyses on fungi community evolution, network patterns, and metabolism.

Valorization of food waste and poultry manure through co-composting amending saw dust, biochar and mineral salts for value-added compost production

The present study proposes a system for co-composting food waste and poultry manure amended with rice husk biochar at different doses (0, 3, 5, 10%, w/w), saw dust, and salts. The effect of rice husk biochar on the characteristics of final compost was evaluated through stabilization indices such as electrical conductivity, bulk density, total porosity, gaseous emissions and nitrogen conservation. Results indicated that when compared to control, the biochar amendment extended the thermophilic stage of the composting, accelerated the biodegradation and mineralization of substrate mixture and helped in the maturation of the end product. Carbon dioxide, methane and ammonia emissions were reduced and the nitrogen conservation was achieved at a greater level in the 10% (w/w) biochar amended treatments. This study implies that the biochar and salts addition for co-composting food waste and poultry manure is beneficial to enhance the property of the compost.

Application of Optimization and Modeling for the Enhancement of Composting Processes

Composting is a more environmentally friendly and cost-effective alternative to digesting organic waste and turning it into organic fertilizer. It is a biological process in which polymeric waste materials contained in organic waste are biodegraded by fungi and bacteria. Temperature, pH, moisture content, C/N ratio, particle size, nutrient content and oxygen supply all have an impact on the efficiency of the composting process. To achieve optimal composting efficiency, all of these variables and their interactions must be considered. To this end, statistical optimization techniques and mathematical modeling approaches have been developed over the years. In this paper, an overview of optimization and mathematical modeling approaches in the field of composting processes is presented. The advantages and limitations of optimization and mathematical modeling for improving composting processes are also addressed.

Critical Factors and Emerging Opportunities in Food Waste Utilization and Treatment Technologies

Globally, approximately one-third of food produced for human consumption is lost or discarded, comprising 1. 3 billion tons annually. Factors contributing to food waste from the food manufacturer to the consumer level are numerous. Events that may result in food waste include, but are not limited to, manufacturing food by-products, improper handling within the supply chain (e.g., cold chain deviations), misunderstood food date labels, over-purchasing, and consumer-level temperature abuse. From the manufacturer to consumer, each node in the food supply requires concerted efforts to divert food waste from entering municipal landfills. Depending on the state of the food waste, it is diverted to various outlets, from food donation for consumption to composting for soil amendment. To better understand the opportunities in the United States to divert food waste from landfills, current and emerging federal policies as well as the causes of food waste generation must be understood. Unfortunately, information on both the composition of food waste in the U.S. and how it impacts critical factors in food waste treatment, especially in food waste composting, is limited. Specifically, this review aims to: (1) discuss and compare critical factors that impact the fate of food waste and (2) examine emerging opportunities to advance the processing and products of food waste.

Feasibility of Coupling Anaerobic Digestion and Hydrothermal Carbonization: Analyzing Thermal Demand

Anaerobic digestion is a biological process with wide application for the treatment of high organic-containing streams. The production of biogas and the lack of oxygen requirements are the main energetic advantages of this process. However, the digested stream may not readily find a final disposal outlet under certain circumstances. The present manuscript analyzed the feasibility of valorizing digestate by the hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) process. A hypothetical plant treating cattle manure and cheese whey as co-substrate (25% v/w, wet weight) was studied. The global performance was evaluated using available data reported in the literature. The best configuration was digestion as a first stage with the subsequent treatment of digestate in an HTC unit. The treatment of manure as sole substrate reported a value of 752 m3/d of biogas which could be increased to 1076 m3/d (43% increase) when coupling an HTC unit for digestate post-treatment and the introduction of the co-substrate. However, the high energy demand of the combined configurations indicated, as the best alternative, the valorization of just a fraction (15%) of digestate to provide the benefits of enhancing biogas production. This configuration presented a much better energy performance than the thermal hydrolysis pre-treatment of manure. The increase in biogas production does not compensate for the high energy demand of the pre-treatment unit. However, several technical factors still need further research to make this alternative a reality, as it is the handling and pumping of high solid slurries that significantly affects the energy demand of the thermal treatment units and the possible toxicity of hydrochar when used in a biological process.

Effect of biochar amendment on compost quality, gaseous emissions and pathogen reduction during in-vessel composting of chicken manure

Because of rapid development in the livestock industry, the production of chicken manure has subsequently increased, which may contribute to environmental pollution. In this regard, in-vessel composting of biochar amended chicken manure and sawdust mixtures was investigated to find out the effect of biochar at the ratios of 0% (control), 3% (T1), 5% (T2), and 10% (T3) on ammonia and greenhouse gases (GHGs) emission, compost quality, pathogenic contaminants and phytotoxicity. The composting process was performed in 100-L, pilot-scale, plastic, cylindrical vessels for 50 days. The addition of biochar (3%, 5%, and 10%) increased the thermophilic temperature with a significant reduction in gaseous emissions (ammonia and CO₂), microbial pathogens (Escherichia coli and Salmonella sp.), and phytotoxicity (Lepidium sativum seed germination assay) compared with that of the control compost products. However, according to the obtained results with in-vessel composting, the amendment of 10% biochar showed the most significant effects concerning the quality of the compost nutrients. The study reveals that the addition of biochar during in-vessel chicken manure composting is beneficial in the reduction of gaseous emissions and pathogenic microorganisms apart from improvement in plant nutrients.

Potential of windrow food and green waste composting in Tunisia

Solid waste management and disposal is one of the most significant challenges facing urban communities around the world. There is a wide range of alternative waste management options and strategies available for dealing with the notable increase in the waste stream. Composting is one of the most viable and efficient waste treatment options in terms of the reduction in the negative effects from the application of organic waste to soil. The experimental research aimed to examine the potential of producing compost from different organic waste streams in Tunisia. Two experimental windrow piles made from cooked and uncooked food and garden wastes were initiated and temporally monitored. The composting process was controlled in terms of temperature and moisture. Sampling was carried out over the period of the composting process. All of the collected samples were analyzed in terms of their physical, chemical, and biological properties; pH, C:N ratio, nitrification index (NI), microbiological tests, respiration activity (AT4), and heavy metal content. The quality of the final product was determined and compared with Tunisian and German standards. The findings demonstrated a significant reduction in the initial C:N ratio to about 15 by the end of the process. Additionally, the results showed that the compost produced appeared to be stable and was deemed to be class V finished compost; the NI was found to be around 1, while the AT4 was estimated to be lower than 6 mg O2/g TS. Regarding the heavy metal content, the final products were characterized as having a lower concentration than those values set by Tunisian and German standards.

From anaerobic to aerobic treatment: upcycling of digestate as a moisturizing agent for in-vessel composting process

In Tunisia, there are crucial challenges facing both urban and rural areas, the most prominent of which are the production of organic waste, the need for waste treatment, the demand for water and energy and the need for a circular economy. To this end, the study was designed to develop a technical concept on closed cycle ‘biowaste to bioenergy’ treating, basically food waste (FW) through combined biological processes. In this approach, the generated digestate from FW anaerobic reactors was used successfully as a moisturizing agent for FW in-vessel composting. Four types of digestate were examined to be used as moisturizing agent (MA). The selection of the appropriate MA was achieved based on technical criteria; moisture content (MC), C:N ratio and heavy metals concentrations. The findings showed that the digestate obtained from anaerobic co-digestion of food waste and wheat straw (D1) was the most efficient AD-effluent to be added. In terms of composting process performance, the thermophilic phase of the amended reactor (A1) lasted 16 days and reached higher temperatures of about 72 °C, while the unamended one (A1) was characterized by a thermophilic temperature of around 66 °C indicating that the end products were of a pathogen-free compost. When it comes to the physico-chemical factors examined demonstrating that the biological conditions were sufficiently developed. The findings showed overall decreasing profiles during the composting period for moisture, C:N ratio as well as nitrification index (NI). From the quality-point of view, it was found that heavy metal concentrations had lower limits than those values set by German standards. Moreover, all the compost samples appeared to be stable and classified as class IV and V end product.

Continuous Anaerobic Co-Digestion of Biowaste with Crude Glycerol under Mesophilic Conditions

A persistent topic of the anaerobic digestion of biowaste is the efficient use of co-substrates. According to Renewable Energy Sources Act the co-substrate input is limited to 10 percent of the average daily substrate feed in Germany. In this concern, the primary focus of this paper is to understand the suitability of crude glycerol in anaerobic digestion of biowaste. Two identical lab-scale anaerobic digester units were added with crude glycerol, and each unit was equipped with four identical fermenters. Unit A was fed with an average organic loading rate of 4.5 kg VS m−3 d−1, and the average organic loading rate of unit B was set at 5.5 kg VS m−3 d−1. The share of crude glycerol in the total feed was 0.77 percent of the fresh matter. The abort criterion is a ratio of the volatile organic acids and buffer capacity (FOS/TAC) in the fermenter above 1.2. The abort criterion was reached after 16 days. In summary, the results lead us to the conclusion crude glycerol is not suitable as a co-substrate for anaerobic digestion for several reasons.

Potential of Sustainable Concept for Handling Organic Waste in Tunisia

Nowadays, Tunisia is seeking to implement cost-efficient and sustainable solutions in relation to the treatment of organic waste which, at up to 65%, makes up the largest proportion of total waste generated in the country. Therefore, an efficient tool for decision makers is needed to provide a clear approach about the potential of organic waste as well as the treatment concept, which can be adapted based on technical requirements and local conditions. Results revealed that there is a high variation in terms of the nature of the collected biowaste, which affects the selection of the adopted bioprocess for each geographical zone of the study area. Three main categories of biowaste are produced along the coastline of Tunisia: food waste (FW) (102.543 t/a); green waste (GW) (1.326.930 t/a); and cattle manure (CM) (1.548.350 t/a). Based on the results of similar projects and laboratory-scale research work, anaerobic and aerobic digestion were examined. Regarding aerobic digestion, the monitoring of several physicochemical parameters ascertained that the co-composting of FW and GW at different ratios (GW: FW = 100:0, 75:25, 50:50, and 25:75) allowed the production of a stable and mature compost. A highly qualified end-product was generated from each trial categorized as a finished compost of class V with reference to German Standards of compost. Regarding the anaerobic process, different feedstock mixtures (FW:CM = 0:1, 1:1, 2:1, and 3:1) were prepared to feed semi-continuous anaerobic reactors. However, a significant improvement in the process development was recorded for digesters including a higher fraction of FW, which produced 0.846 LN/kg VSin as the maximum biogas production. Therefore, biological treatments of food waste and different co-substrates seems to be a suitable technique for Tunisia in terms of waste management, environmental, and energy aspects. However, the evaluation of the efficiency of the proposed biological treatments was also verified by a draw-up of a technical and economic feasibility analysis. Although the cost–benefit estimations proved that the profits from both the compost and biogas plants would be very modest, the feasibility of such sustainable projects should not only be evaluated on an economic basis, but also by taking into account socio-environmental considerations including decreasing environmental threats, providing work opportunities, increasing incomes, stimulating public awareness as well as reducing the operating costs linked to landfilling.

Response of process performance and microbial community to ammonia stress in series batch experiments

To further clarify the key stage and microorganisms responsible for ammonia inhibition instability, three sequential batch experiments were conducted with various ammonia concentrations and different exposure modes. Acetate metabolism was most sensitive to ammonia, however, after continuous ammonia exposure, acetate metabolism was well restored by a shift in dominant microorganisms. In contrast, the metabolism of longer-chain volatile fatty acids (LCVFAs, C₃-C₅) was only inhibited under a high ammonia concentration (≥6000 mg/L), however, once inhibited, continuous exposure neither restored the abundance of functional microbes nor induced new microorganisms to perform metabolic functions. Therefore, LCVFA metabolism was the key stage responsible for process instability under ammonia stress. Moreover, the deterioration of LCVFA metabolism was caused by the inhibition of syntrophic acetogenic bacteria (SAB) induced by total ammonia nitrogen, rather than the feedback inhibition from methanogenesis. That is, SAB were the key microorganisms involved in process instability.

Food Waste Composting and Microbial Community Structure Profiling

Over the last decade, food waste has been one of the major issues globally as it brings a negative impact on the environment and health. Rotting discharges methane, causing greenhouse effect and adverse health effects due to pathogenic microorganisms or toxic leachates that reach agricultural land and water system. As a solution, composting is implemented to manage and reduce food waste in line with global sustainable development goals (SDGs). This review compiles input on the types of organic composting, its characteristics, physico-chemical properties involved, role of microbes and tools available in determining the microbial community structure. Composting types: vermi-composting, windrow composting, aerated static pile composting and in-vessel composting are discussed. The diversity of microorganisms in each of the three stages in composting is highlighted and the techniques used to determine the microbial community structure during composting such as biochemical identification, polymerase chain reaction denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (PCR-DGGE), terminal restriction fragment length polymorphism (T-RFLP) and single strand-conformation polymorphism (SSCP), microarray analysis and next-generation sequencing (NGS) are discussed. Overall, a good compost, not only reduces waste issues, but also contributes substantially to the economic and social sectors of a nation.
