Production of Organic Fertilizers from Rocket Seed (Eruca Sativa L.), Chicken Peat and Moringa Oleifera Leaves for Growing Linseed under Water Deficit Stress

Organic amendment-mediated reclamation and build-up of soil microbial diversity in salt-affected soils: fostering soil biota for shaping rhizosphere to enhance soil health and crop productivity

Soil salinization is a serious environmental problem that affects agricultural productivity and sustainability worldwide. Organic amendments have been considered a practical approach for reclaiming salt-affected soils. In addition to improving soil physical and chemical properties, organic amendments have been found to promote the build-up of new halotolerant bacterial species and microbial diversity, which plays a critical role in maintaining soil health, carbon dynamics, crop productivity, and ecosystem functioning. Many reported studies have indicated the development of soil microbial diversity in organic amendments amended soil. But they have reported only the development of microbial diversity and their identification. This review article provides a comprehensive summary of the current knowledge on the use of different organic amendments for the reclamation of salt-affected soils, focusing on their effects on soil properties, microbial processes and species, development of soil microbial diversity, and microbial processes to tolerate salinity levels and their strategies to cope with it. It also discusses the factors affecting the microbial species developments, adaptation and survival, and carbon dynamics. This review is based on the concept of whether addition of specific organic amendment can promote specific halotolerant microbe species, and if it is, then which amendment is responsible for each microbial species' development and factors responsible for their survival in saline environments.

Impact of Different Fertilizer Sources under Supplemental Irrigation and Rainfed Conditions on Eco-Physiological Responses and Yield Characteristics of Dragon's Head (Lallemantia iberica)

The effects of the irrigation regime and different fertilizer sources on the eco-physiological responses and yield characteristics of dragon's head were explored in a factorial experiment based on a randomized complete block design with 12 treatments and 3 replications in the 2019 growing season. The treatments included six different fertilizer sources (animal manure, vermicompost, poultry manure, biofertilizer, chemical fertilizer, and control) and two irrigation regimes (rainfed and supplemental irrigation). The results indicated the positive effects of supplementary irrigation and the application of vermicompost, poultry manure, and animal manure by increasing the absorption of nutrients (phosphorus and potassium) and improving relative water contents, chlorophyll and carotenoid contents, and the fixed oil percentage of dragon's head. The activities of catalase, ascorbate peroxidase, and superoxide dismutase decreased in the rainfed plants, whereas organic fertilizer application increased the antioxidant enzyme activity. The highest grain yield (721 kg ha^-1), biological yield (5858 kg ha^-1), total flavonoids (1.47 mg g^-1 DW), total phenol (27.90 mg g^-1 DW), fixed oil yield (200.17 kg ha^-1), and essential oil yield (1.18 kg ha^-1) were noted in plants that were treated with vermicompost under supplemental irrigation. Therefore, it is recommended that organic fertilizers such as vermicompost and poultry manure be used to substitute chemical fertilizers. These practices can help popularize organic crops using rainfed and supplementary irrigation.

Seed Germination and Seed Bank Dynamics of Eruca sativa (Brassicaceae): A Weed on the Northeastern Edge of Tibetan Plateau

As a versatile cruciferous species, Eruca sativa is widely cultivated, but in some areas, it has become an invasive weed. There are few studies on its seed dormancy and soil seed bank. This research examined seed dormancy, germination, and dynamics of the soil seed bank of E. sativa, with a view to provide support for its prevention and control. We tested the effects of temperature, light, storage, water, and salinity stress on seed germination and burial depth on seedling emergence of E. sativa. Dynamics of the soil seed bank were determined with a 24 month in situ seed-burial study. Seeds of E. sativa can germinate in a temperature range of 5-35°C; moreover, they exhibited non-deep physiological dormancy (NDPD) at maturity, which can be broken by dry storage or exposure to low temperature in winter. Germination of E. sativa seeds was sensitive to water and salinity stress, and most seeds did not germinate at -0.3 MPa. When buried in soil in the field, seeds exhibited an annual dormancy/non-dormancy cycle and formed at least a short-term persistent soil seed bank. Seeds buried deeper than 5 cm can hardly emerge. Seeds of E. sativa have a wide germination temperature range and exhibited dormancy cycling, which promotes the formation of a persistent soil seed bank and enables it to better adapt to the harsh low-temperature climate of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. No-tillage would be a good management strategy for this species.

Hegemony of Network Capabilities, Frugal Innovation and Innovation Strategies: The Innovation Performance Perspective

The emergence of advanced technologies has brought new challenges and opportunities for all kinds of business organizations. In a technologically advanced era, innovation plays a dominant role for the successful operation of the commercial landscape. Therefore, the current study was conducted to investigate the impact of network capabilities (NC) and frugal innovation (FI) on innovation performance (IP). Furthermore, the mediating role of FI and moderating role of innovation strategies has also been tested on the link between NC and IP. Small and medium enterprises (SMEs) registered with small and medium enterprises development authorities (SMEDA) were approached for the completion of the current study. Only 509 owner/managers agreed to participate. A quantitative research design was employed for the current study. During the two–three months process of data collection only 387 complete responses were received from the SMEs working in Pakistan’s big cities. Correlation, regression and bootstrap methods were applied to test the study hypotheses. The findings revealed that NC positively affect FI and IP. Furthermore, the findings also confirmed the mediating effect of FI between NC and IP link. The performance of SMEs working in emerging economies is largely based on their innovative activities. In this dynamic scenario SMEs’ survival is attached to continuous IP in their products and services.

Expatiating the impact of anthropogenic aspects and climatic factors on long-term soil monitoring and management

This article is an extensive collection of scientific literature related to the impact of fertilizers on soil microbial and enzymatic activity. Due to the significance of technology in quantitative and qualitative evaluation of agricultural production, this is a basic problem for the present and future of mankind, where the scientific data being of utmost importance related to the topic. The comparison, including pedo-enzymological evaluation of minerals along with organic fertilization, highlights significant differences between mineral and organic fertilizers, confirming the superiority of complex mineral-organic fertilization. Enzymatic indicators that describe and define the soil quality resulted from enzymatic activities value and provide valuable information regarding the soil fertility status. Moreover, soil enzyme responds to soil management as well as to environmental pollutants. Changes of environmental conditions and pollutants like heavy metals and other toxic substances result in a shift in the biological activity of the soil. These changes can destabilize the soil system and cause a decrease in the nutrient pools. To ensure the improvement of fertilization techniques, the properties of nanoparticles are exploited that can efficiently release nutrients to plant cells. Numerous researches were performed in order to follow the long-term effects of incorporating nanofertilizers into the soil, obtaining an exhaustive overview of this new technology over the development of sustainable agriculture.
