Kinetics and Adsorption Equilibrium in the Removal of Azo-Anionic Dyes by Modified Cellulose

Nanoremediation and Antioxidant Potential of Biogenic Silver Nanoparticles Synthesized Using Leucena's Leaves, Stem, and Fruits

Synthetic dyes are persistent organic environmental pollutants that can cause extensive damage to living beings and to the ecosystem as a whole. Cost-effective, sustainable, and efficient strategies to deal with this type of pollution are necessary as it commonly resists conventional water treatment methods. Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) synthesized using the aqueous extract from the leaves, stem, and fruits of Leucaena leucocephala (Leucena) were produced and characterized through UV-vis, TEM, EDS, SDL, XPS, XRD, and zeta potential, and they proved to be able to promote adsorption to remediate methylene blue and tartrazine pollution in water. The nanoremediation was performed and did not require direct exposure to sunlight or any special lamp or a specific reduction agent. The AgNPs produced using the extract from the leaves exhibited the best performance in nanoremediation and also presented antioxidant activity that surpassed the one from butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT). Consequently, it is an interesting nanotool to use in dye nanoremediation and/or as an antioxidant nanostructure.

Methyl Red Adsorption on Biochar Obtained by Physical Activation of Caraway Seeds with Carbon Dioxide

In this study carbon adsorbents were produced from caraway (Carum carvi L.) seeds, through direct and physical activation by carbon dioxide. The resulting biochar adsorbents were analyzed using low-temperature nitrogen adsorption-desorption isotherms and Boehm titration. Furthermore, the acid-base properties of the biochar samples obtained were examined, and the pH of their aqueous extracts was determined. The obtained adsorbents had a specific surface area ranging between 10 to 70 m2 /g. Resulting carbon materials exhibited a predominance of basic groups on their surfaces. The sorption capacities of methyl red for the samples varied from 3 to 20 mg/g. Conducted adsorption studies determined, that the adsorption kinetics of the dye on biochar materials followed a pseudo-second order model and the adsorption process was best described by the Freundlich isotherm, indicating the development of a multi-layer adsorbate on their surfaces. The effectiveness of adsorption in aqueous solutions of methyl red increased with the rise in process temperature. Moreover, the adsorption process was found to be spontaneous and endothermic based on thermodynamic investigations.

Recent insights into mechanism of modified bio-adsorbents for the remediation of environmental pollutants

Rapid industrialization has exacerbated the hazard to health and the environment. Wide spectrums of contaminants pose numerous risks, necessitating their disposal and treatment. There is a need for further remediation methods since pollutant residues cannot be entirely eradicated by traditional treatment techniques. Bio-adsorbents are gaining popularity due to their eco-friendly approach, broad applicability, and improved functional and surface characteristics. Adsorbents that have been modified have improved qualities that aid in their adsorptive nature. Adsorption, ion exchange, chelation, surface precipitation, microbial uptake, physical entrapment, biodegradation, redox reactions, and electrostatic interactions are some of the processes that participate in the removal mechanism of biosorbents. These processes can vary depending on the particular biosorbent and the type of pollutants being targeted. The systematic review focuses on the many modification approaches used to remove environmental contaminants. Different modification or activation strategies can be used depending on the type of bio-adsorbent and pollutant to be remediated. Physical activation procedures such as ultrasonication and pyrolysis are more commonly used to modify bio-adsorbents. Ultrasonication process improves the adsorption efficiency by 15-25%. Acid and alkali modified procedures are the most effective chemical activation strategies for adsorbent modification for pollution removal. Chemical modification increases the removal to around 95-99%. The biological technique involving microbial culture is an emerging field that needs to be investigated further for pollutant removal. A short evaluation of modified adsorbents with multi-pollutant adsorption capability that have been better eliminated throughout the adsorption process has been provided.

Removal of Methyl Red from Aqueous Solution Using Biochar Derived from Fennel Seeds

In this study, fennel (Foeniculum vulgare) seeds were used as a precursor to obtain carbon adsorbents through physical activation with carbon dioxide and chemical activation by impregnating the precursor with sodium carbonate. The physical activation involved the carbonization of the precursor at a temperature of 600 °C for 60 min and activation at a temperature of 800 °C for 30 min with carbon dioxide. Chemical activation included impregnation of the precursor with sodium carbonate at a mass ratio of a precursor to activator of 1:2. The mixture was activated in a nitrogen atmosphere with a flow rate at a temperature of 700 °C for 45 min. The resulting biochar samples were washed with 5% hydrochloric acid and subsequently rinsed with boiling distilled water. The biochar adsorbents were characterized using low-temperature nitrogen adsorption-desorption isotherms, Boehm titration, and pH measurements of their aqueous extracts. The specific surface area of the obtained adsorbents ranged from 89 to 345 m2/g. Biochar adsorbents exhibit a predominance of acidic groups over basic groups on their surfaces. The sorption capacities of the obtained samples towards an aqueous solution of methyl red range from 26 to 135 mg/g. Based on adsorption studies, it was found that the adsorption of the dye on the obtained biochar materials follows a pseudo-second-order model. The Freundlich isotherm best describes the studied process, indicating the formation of a multilayer of adsorbate on the adsorbent surface. The efficacy of adsorption in aqueous solutions of methyl red was found to increase with the elevation of the process temperature. Moreover, thermodynamic studies have shown that the adsorption process is spontaneous and endothermic. Consequently, this work provides a description of the physicochemical parameters of two biochars obtained by physical and chemical activation of a little-studied precursor-fennel seeds-and studies on their potential use as adsorbents for contaminants from the aqueous phase.

Fluorescent molecularly imprinted polymer nanocomposite for solid-phase extraction and fluorimetric determination of hydrochlorothiazide

We report herein a fluorescent molecularly imprinted polymer (FMIP) for the solid-phase extraction (SPE) and fluorimetric determination of hydrochlorothiazide (HCTZ) in water. The FMIP is based on fluorescent polystyrene nanoparticles embedded within a molecularly imprinted polyaniline (PANI) matrix. The operational adsorption parameters such as the initial HCTZ concentration, incubation time and the solution pH were found to influence the removal efficiency. At optimum conditions, a high adsorption capacity of the FMIP was found (2.08 mg g-1). Evidence of the adsorption process was confirmed by the change in the FMIP physicochemical properties measured by FTIR absorption spectroscopy and electron microscopy. Based on the regression R2 values and the consistently low values of the adsorption statistical error functions, equilibrium data were best fitted to both Freundlich and Temkin isotherms. Moreover, the pseudo-second-order kinetic model described the adsorption kinetics, and the mechanism of the adsorption process was explained by the intraparticle diffusion model. Upon studying adsorption thermodynamics, negative ΔG values (-26.18 kJ mol-1 at room temperature) were obtained revealing that the adsorption process is spontaneous. Interestingly, the maximum adsorption capacity was obtained at 298 K, pH 7.0, and using a high HCTZ concentration, thus revealing the suitability of the proposed FMIP for easy and fast SPE of HCTZ. The FMIP showed an imprinting factor of 1.19 implying the selectivity over the corresponding FNIP. Eventually, the proposed FMIP was successfully applied to the spectrofluorimetric determination of HCTZ in aqueous samples with %recovery values close to 100%.

High biosorption of cationic dye onto a novel material based on paper mill sludge

The valorization of paper mill sludge (PMS) is the main goal of this study. The emissions of PMS continue to increase at global scale, especially from packaging paper and board sectors. The raw sludge was used to prepare an adsorbent to remove toxic pollutants from wastewater, the methylene blue (MB), an organic dye. Firstly, the physico-chemical characterization of PMS was done determining the crystalline phases of PMS fibers, the content of main elements, and the pH zero point charge, which was determined at around pH 7. The adsorption of MB on PMS powder was studied at 18 °C with an agitation of 200 rpm, being the best operating conditions 30 min of contact time, 250 mg L-1 of initial MB concentration and 0.05 g in 25 mL of adsorbent dose. Experimental data of MB adsorption was fitted to Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm equations. The Langmuir model was more accurate for the equilibrium data of MB adsorption at pH 5.1. The PFOM and PSOM were adjusted to experimental adsorption kinetics data, being PSOM, which describes better the MB adsorption by PMS powder. This was confirmed by calculating the maximum adsorption capacity with PSOM, which was 42.7 mg g-1, being nearly similar of the experimental value of 43.5 mg g-1. The analysis of adsorption thermodynamics showed that the MB was adsorbed exothermically with a ΔH0 = - 20.78 kJ mol-1, and spontaneously with ΔG0 from - 0.99 to - 6.38 kJ mol-1 in the range of temperature from 291 to 363 K, respectively. These results confirm that the sludge from paper industry can be used as biosorbent with remarkable adsorption capacity and low cost for the treatment of wastewater. PMS can be applied in the future for the depollution of the effluents from the textile industry, which are highly charged with dyes.

Adsorption isotherms and kinetics for Pb(ii) ion removal from aqueous solutions with biogenic metal oxide nanoparticles

This study investigates the sorption removal of lead(ii) ions using zinc oxide (ZnO) and copper(ii) oxide (CuO) nanoparticles synthesized through a wet burning method with the aid of plant extract from Serratula coronata L. The effect of plant collection time on polyphenol content was investigated and optimal conditions were determined. The structural and chemical properties of the nanoparticles were studied by scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive analysis, X-ray phase analysis, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. A comparative analysis of lead ion sorption on the surface of synthesized nanoparticles was conducted. The kinetic study revealed that the sorption process follows a pseudo-second-order mechanism, and the Freundlich sorption model provides a better fit for the experimental data. ZnO and CuO nanoparticles exhibited significant sorption capacities, with values of 163.6 and 153.8 mg g-1, respectively.

Removal of Methylene Blue and Methyl Red from Aqueous Solutions Using Activated Carbons Obtained by Chemical Activation of Caraway Seed

In this study, activated carbons were produced through the chemical activation of caraway seeds using three different activators: Na2CO3, K2CO3, and H3PO4. A 1:2 weight ratio of precursor to activator was maintained in every instance. Comprehensive analyses were conducted on the resultant activated carbons, including elemental analysis, textural parameters determination, Boehm titration for surface oxygen functional groups, pH assessment of aqueous extracts, and quantification of ash content. The produced materials were subjected to adsorption tests for methylene blue and methyl red sodium salt from the liquid phase and the effects of adsorbent dosage, pH of the aqueous dye solution, process temperature, and adsorbent-adsorbate contact time on sorption capacity obtained. To characterize the adsorption model of the examined pollutants, both the Langmuir and Freundlich equations were employed. In addition, the sorption capacity of the obtained carbon materials against an iodine aqueous solution was assessed. The specific surface area of the obtained adsorbents ranged from 269 to 926 m2/g. By employing potassium carbonate to chemically activate the starting substance, the resulting activated carbons show the highest level of specific surface area development and the greatest sorption capacity against the tested impurities-296 mg/g for methylene blue and 208 mg/g for methyl red sodium salt. The adsorption rate for both dyes was determined to align with a pseudo-second-order kinetic model. The experimental adsorption data for methylene blue were well-described by the Langmuir model, whereas the Freundlich model was found to be congruent with the data pertaining to methyl red sodium salt.

Propensity of a low-cost adsorbent derived from agricultural wastes to interact with cationic dyes in aqueous solutions

Ash collected from thrown-away by-products while preparing a popular traditional food additive, kolakhar of the Assamese community of North East, India, was used as an alternate cost-effective, porous bioadsorbent option from the conventional activated carbon for the purification of carcinogenic dyes laden water. The base material for kolakhar preparation was taken from the discarded banana stem waste to stimulate agricultural waste management. Methylene blue (MB) and basic fuchsin (BF) dyes were used as model cationic dyes. Characterization techniques like CHN, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), field emission-scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM), energy dispersive X-ray (EDX), and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) analysis of the prepared banana stem ash (BSA) reveal the presence of high inorganic contents and functional groups in the irregular, porous bioadsorbent with surface area 55.534 m2 g-1. Various regulating parameters studied to optimize the adsorption capacity of BSA were bioadsorbent dose (0.1-3 g/L), temperature (298-318 K), contact time (0-150 min), pH (2-9), and initial dye concentrations (10-40 mg/L). Non-linear kinetic models suggested Elovich for both MB and BF adsorption, while the non-linear isotherm model suggested Langmuir and Temkin for MB and BF adsorption, respectively, as best-fitted curves. The monolayer adsorption capacity (qm) for MB and BF was 15.22 mg/g and 24.08 mg/g at 318 K, respectively, with more than 95% removal efficiency for both dyes. The thermodynamic parameters studied indicated that the adsorption is spontaneous. The ∆H0 values of MB and BF adsorptions were 2.303 kJ/mol (endothermic) and - 29.238 kJ/mol (exothermic), respectively.

The Influence of Oxidation and Nitrogenation on the Physicochemical Properties and Sorption Capacity of Activated Biocarbons Prepared from the Elderberry Inflorescence

The main objective of the study was to prepare a series of new activated biocarbons by means of physical and chemical activation of elderberry inflorescence. The influence of carbon matrix nitrogenation/oxidation on the physicochemical properties and sorption abilities of the carbonaceous materials was investigated. The impact of initial dye concentration, pH and temperature of the system on methylene blue and rhodamine B removal efficiency was checked. It was shown that activation of elderberry inflorescences with CO₂ or H₃PO₄, and their further modification by introducing nitrogen or oxygen functional groups, allowed us obtain a wide range of materials that differ significantly in terms of the chemical nature of the surface, degree of specific surface development and the type of porous structure generated. The samples prepared by chemical activation proved to be very effective in terms of cationic dyes adsorption. The maximum sorption capacity toward methylene blue and rhodamine B reached the level of 277.8 and 98.1 mg/g, respectively. A better fit to the experimental data was achieved with a Langmuir isotherm than a Freundlich one. It was also shown that the efficiency of methylene blue and rhodamine B adsorption from aqueous solutions decreased with increasing temperature of the system.

Thermodynamics, kinetics and isothermal studies of tartrazine adsorption onto microcline/MWCNTs nanocomposite and the regeneration potentials

The quest for a cheap, effective, and eco-friendly wastewater treatment technique that is free of secondary toxic byproducts, calls for the fabrication of a nature-friendly adsorbent with a robust capacity to decontaminate polluted water sources and be recycled. To this end, we report the fabrication of novel nanocomposite (KMCM) from microcline (KMC) and multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs). The adsorbents (KMC and KMCM) were characterized using XRD, BET, SEM, TGA and FTIR. The novel and low-cost nano sorbent were designed for the elimination of tartrazine (Tatz) from wastewater. The adsorption of Tatz onto KMC and KMCM was influenced by adsorbent dose, initial Tatz concentration, contact time and solution pH. Experimental data acquired from the equilibrium studies were well addressed by the Langmuir isotherm model. The maximum uptake capacity of 37.96 mg g^-1 and 67.17 mg g^-1 were estimated for KMC and KMCM. The kinetics for the adsorption of Tatz onto KMC and KMCM was best expressed by pseudo-second-order and Elovich models. The thermodynamic parameters revealed that the uptake of Tatz onto KMC and KMCM was an endothermic (ΔH: KMC = 35.0 kJ mol^-1 and KMCM = 42.91 kJ mol^-1), entropy-driven (ΔS: KMC = 177.6 J K^-1 mol^-1 and KMCM = 214.2 J K^-1 mol^-1) and spontaneous process. Meanwhile, KMCM demonstrated good reusability potential and superior adsorption efficiency when compared to other adsorbents.

Eco-Friendly Electroless Template Synthesis of Cu-Based Composite Track-Etched Membranes for Sorption Removal of Lead(II) Ions

This paper reports the synthesis of composite track-etched membranes (TeMs) modified with electrolessly deposited copper microtubules using copper deposition baths based on environmentally friendly and non-toxic reducing agents (ascorbic acid (Asc), glyoxylic acid (Gly), and dimethylamine borane (DMAB)), and comparative testing of their lead(II) ion removal capacity via batch adsorption experiments. The structure and composition of the composites were investigated by X-ray diffraction technique and scanning electron and atomic force microscopies. The optimal conditions for copper electroless plating were determined. The adsorption kinetics followed a pseudo-second-order kinetic model, which indicates that adsorption is controlled by the chemisorption process. A comparative study was conducted on the applicability of the Langmuir, Freundlich, and Dubinin-Radushkevich adsorption models to define the equilibrium isotherms and the isotherm constants for the prepared composite TeMs. Based on the regression coefficients R², it has been shown that the Freundlich model better describes the experimental data of the composite TeMs on the adsorption of lead(II) ions.

Biocarbons Obtained from Fennel and Caraway Fruits as Adsorbents of Methyl Red Sodium Salt from Water System

The aim of this study was to prepare biocarbons by biomass activation with carbon(IV) oxide. Fennel and caraway fruits were used as the precursors of bioadsorbents. The impact of the precursor type and temperature of activation on the physicochemical properties of the obtained biocarbons and their interaction with methyl red sodium salt upon adsorption process have been checked. The obtained bioadsorbents were characterized by determination of-low temperature nitrogen adsorption/desorption, elemental analysis, ash content, Boehm titration, and pH of water extracts. The biocarbons have surface area varying from 233-371 m²/g and basic in nature with acidic/basic oxygen-containing functional groups (3.23-5.08 mmol/g). The adsorption capacity varied from 63 to 141 mg/g. The influence of different parameters, such as the effectiveness of methyl red sodium salt adsorption, was evaluated. The adsorption kinetics was well fitted using a pseudo-second-order model. The Freundlich model best represented the equilibrium data. The amount of adsorbed dye was also found to increase with the increasing temperature of the process.

Hybrid PET Track-Etched Membranes Grafted by Well-Defined Poly(2-(dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate) Brushes and Loaded with Silver Nanoparticles for the Removal of As(III)

Nanoporous track-etched membranes (TeM) are promising materials as adsorbents to remove toxic pollutants, but control over the pore diameter and density in addition to precise functionalization of nanochannels is crucial for controlling the surface area and efficiency of TeMs. This study reported the synthesis of functionalized PET TeMs as high-capacity sorbents for the removal of trivalent arsenic, As(III), which is more mobile and about 60 times more toxic than As(V). Nanochannels of PET-TeMs were functionalized by UV-initiated reversible addition fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT)-mediated grafting of 2-(dimethyamino)ethyl methacrylate (DMAEMA), allowing precise control of the degree of grafting and graft lengths within the nanochannels. Ag NPs were then loaded onto PDMAEMA-g-PET to provide a hybrid sorbent for As(III) removal. The As(III) removal efficiency of Ag@PDMAEMA-g-PET, PDMAEMA-g-PET, and pristine PET TeM was compared by adsorption kinetics studies at various pH and sorption times. The adsorption of As(III) by Ag@DMAEMA-g-PET and DMAEMA-g-PET TeMs was found to follow the Freundlich mechanism and a pseudo-second-order kinetic model. After 10 h, As(III) removal efficiencies were 85.6% and 56% for Ag@PDMAEMA-g-PET and PDMAEMA-g-PET, respectively, while PET template had a very low arsenic sorption capacity of 17.5% at optimal pH of 4.0, indicating that both PDMAEMA grafting and Ag-NPs loading significantly increased the As(III) removal capacity of PET-TeMs.

Serratula coronata L. Mediated Synthesis of ZnO Nanoparticles and Their Application for the Removal of Alizarin Yellow R by Photocatalytic Degradation and Adsorption

In this study, the potential of biogenic zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) in the removal of alizarin yellow R (AY) from aqueous solutions by photocatalytic degradation, as well as adsorption, was investigated. The synthesized ZnO NPs were prepared by the simple wet-combustion method using the plant extract of Serratula coronata L. as a reducing and stabilizing agent and characterized by powder X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Photocatalytic degradation of AY was monitored by UV-visible spectroscopy and the effects of parameters, such as light source type (UV-, visible- and sunlight), incubation time, pH, catalyst dosage and temperature on degradation were investigated. It was demonstrated that the source of light plays an important role in the efficiency of the reaction and the UV-assisted degradation of AY was the most effective, compared to the others. The degradation reaction of AY was found to follow the Langmuir-Hinshelwood mechanism and a pseudo-first-order kinetic model. The degradation kinetics of AY accelerated with increasing temperature, and the lowest activation energy (E_a) was calculated as 3.4 kJ/mol for the UV-light irradiation system, while the E_a values were 4.18 and 7.37 kJ/mol for visible light and sunlight, respectively. The dye removal by the adsorption process was also affected by several parameters, such as pH, sorbent amount and contact time. The data obtained in the kinetics study fit the pseudo-second-order equation best model and the rate constant was calculated as 0.001 g/mg·min. The isotherm analysis indicated that the equilibrium data fit well with the Freundlich isotherm model. The maximum adsorption capacity of AY on biogenic ZnO NPs was 5.34 mg/g.

Green Synthesis of Zinc Oxide Nanoparticles Using Red Seaweed for the Elimination of Organic Toxic Dye from an Aqueous Solution

This study aims to produce green zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO-NPs) derived from red seaweed (Pterocladia Capillacea) and evaluate their potential to absorb Ismate violet 2R (IV2R) ions from an aqueous solution. UV-vis spectrophotometry, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and a Brunauer-Emmett-Teller surface area analysis (BET) were used to analyze the structural, morphological, and optical features of the synthesized nanoparticles. The change in color of the chemical solution revealed the formation of zinc oxide nanoparticles. The FTIR examination confirmed the synthesis of both Zn and ZnO nanoparticle powder, with a BET surface area of 113.751 m² g^-1 and an average pore size of 2.527 nm for the synthesized adsorbent. Furthermore, the maximum removal effectiveness of IV2R was 99% when 0.08 g ZnO-NPs was applied at a pH of 6, a temperature of 55 °C, and a contact time of 120 min. The dye adsorption capacity of the ZnO-NPs was 72.24 mg g^-1. The adsorption process was also controlled by the Freundlich adsorption model and pseudo-second-order reaction kinetics. The adsorption of IV2R ions onto the ZnO-NPs could be represented as a nonideal and reversible sorption process of a nonuniform surface, according to Freundlich adsorption isotherms. In addition, the constant values of the model parameters were determined using various nonlinear regression error functions. Moreover, thermodynamic parameters such as entropy change, enthalpy change, and free energy change were investigated; the adsorption process was spontaneous and endothermic. The high capacity of the ZnO-NPs synthesized by red seaweed promotes them as promising substances for applications in water treatment for the removal of IV2R dye from aqueous systems.

Recent Advancements in Cyclodextrin-Based Adsorbents for the Removal of Hazardous Pollutants from Waters

Water is an essential substance for the survival on Earth of all living organisms. However, population growth has disturbed the natural phenomenon of living, due to industrial growth to meet ever expanding demands, and, hence, an exponential increase in environmental pollution has been reported in the last few decades. Moreover, water pollution has drawn major attention for its adverse effects on human health and the ecosystem. Various techniques have been used to treat wastewater, including biofiltration, activated sludge, membrane filtration, active oxidation process and adsorption. Among the mentioned, the last method is becoming very popular. Moreover, among the sorbents, those based on cyclodextrin have gained worldwide attention due to their excellent properties. This review article overviewed recent contributions related to the synthesis of Cyclodextrin (CD)-based adsorbents to treat wastewater, and their applications, especially for the removal of heavy metals, dyes, and organic pollutants (pharmaceuticals and endocrine disruptor chemicals). Furthermore, new adsorption trends and trials related to CD-based materials are also discussed regarding their regenerative potential. Finally, this review could be an inspiration for new research and could also anticipate future directions and challenges associated with CD-based adsorbents.

Modified Polymeric Biosorbents from Rumex acetosella for the Removal of Heavy Metals in Wastewater

The contamination of water resources by effluents from various industries often contains heavy metals, which cause irreversible damage to the environment and health. The objective was to evaluate different biosorbents from the weed Rumex acetosella to remove metal cations in wastewater. Drying, grinding and sieving of the stems was carried out to obtain the biomass, retaining the fractions of 250 to 500 µm and 500 to 750 µm, which served to obtain the biosorbents in natura (unmodified), acidic, alkaline, and mixed. Proximal analysis, PZC, TOC, removal capacity, influence of pH, functional groups, thermal analysis, structural characteristics, adsorption isotherms, and kinetic study were evaluated. The 250 µm mixed treatment was the one that presented the highest removal percentages, mainly due to the OH, NH, -C-H, COOH, and C-O functional groups achieving the removal of up to 96.14% of lead, 36.30% of zinc, 34.10% of cadmium and 32.50% of arsenic. For contact times of 120 min and an optimum pH of 5.0, a loss of cellulose mass of 59% at 328 °C and a change in the surface of the material were also observed, which allowed for obtaining a topography with greater chelating capacity, and the Langmuir and pseudo-second order models were better fitted to the adsorption data. The new biosorbents could be used in wastewater treatment economically and efficiently.
