Promising sensors for pharmaceutical pollutant adsorption using Clar's goblet-based 2D membranes

This study focuses on the design of new 2D membranes from connected Clar's Goblet as a potential sensor for pharmaceutical pollutants, specifically the painkiller drugs aspirin, paracetamol, ibuprofen, and diclofenac. The electronic, optical, and interaction properties are investigated using density functional theory calculations. The Clar's Goblet membranes (CGMs) that were chosen are semiconductors with an energy gap of around 1.5 eV, according to energy gap calculations and density of states. Molecular electrostatic potential (ESP) analysis shows that CGMs have electrophilic and nucleophilic sites, suggesting their suitability for interacting with pharmaceutical pollutants. The adsorption energies confirm the chemical adsorption of pharmaceutical pollutants with diclofenac showing the strongest adsorption. The UV-Vis absorption spectra of CGMs-drug complexes are analyzed, revealing a redshift compared to the absorption spectrum of CGMs alone, confirming the adsorption of these drugs. Further analysis using hole/electron examinations indicates that the type of excitation is local excitation rather than charge transfer excitation. This study quantitatively characterized hole and electron distribution in excited states using various indices. The analysis revealed local excitation transitions and significant charge transfer between the CGMs molecule and pharmaceutical pollutants. Additionally, non-covalent interaction analysis indicates the presence of van der Waals interactions, highlighting the adsorption behavior of the drugs. These results demonstrate the potential of CGMs as a highly sensitive sensor for pharmaceutical pollutants.

Guidance document on the impact of water treatment processes on residues of active substances or their metabolites in water abstracted for the production of drinking water

This guidance document provides a tiered framework for risk assessors and facilitates risk managers in making decisions concerning the approval of active substances (AS) that are chemicals in plant protection products (PPPs) and biocidal products, and authorisation of the products. Based on the approaches presented in this document, a conclusion can be drawn on the impact of water treatment processes on residues of the AS or its metabolites in surface water and/or groundwater abstracted for the production of drinking water, i.e. the formation of transformation products (TPs). This guidance enables the identification of actual public health concerns from exposure to harmful compounds generated during the processing of water for the production of drinking water, and it focuses on water treatment methods commonly used in the European Union (EU). The tiered framework determines whether residues from PPP use or residues from biocidal product use can be present in water at water abstraction locations. Approaches, including experimental methods, are described that can be used to assess whether harmful TPs may form during water treatment and, if so, how to assess the impact of exposure to these water treatment TPs (tTPs) and other residues including environmental TPs (eTPs) on human and domesticated animal health through the consumption of TPs via drinking water. The types of studies or information that would be required are described while avoiding vertebrate testing as much as possible. The framework integrates the use of weight-of-evidence and, when possible alternative (new approach) methods to avoid as far as possible the need for additional testing.

Homogeneous and Heterogeneous Catalytic Ozonation of Textile Wastewater: Application and Mechanism

This paper presents an overview of textile wastewater treatment by catalytic ozonation, highlighting the parameters of the process and accompanying mechanisms. Since more than 800,000 tons of dyes are produced annually and thousands of cubic meters of highly polluted textile wastewater have been emitted into the environment every day, this issue has become an environmental concern. Due to the high oxidative potential of ozone (2.08 V) and hydroxyl radical (2.80 V), the main reactive species in catalytic ozonation, the burdensome organic pollutants, including textile dyes, can be successfully decomposed. The paper shows the main groups of catalysts, emphasizing novel structural, nano-structured, and functionalized materials. The examples of catalytic ozonation in the industrial application for real textile wastewater were specially highlighted.

Industrial Textile Wastewater Ozone Treatment: Catalyst Selection

One of the recent trends in textile wastewater treatment has become catalytic ozonation. The necessity of effective color removal in a short treatment time is a standard during industrial implementation. At the same time, efficient chemical oxygen demand (COD), total organic carbon (TOC), and toxic by-product removal are highly expected. This study presents the results of a catalytic ozonation treatment. Three types of catalysts: a metal oxide (TiO2 as P25 by Degussa), activated carbon (nano-powder by Sigma, AC), and metal particles (platinum, 1% wt. supported on AC matrix by Sigma, Pt–AC) have been applied. The investigations were conducted for real industrial wastewater originated in textile dyeing with Reactive Black 5 dye (RB5). The experiments ran for the raw wastewater (without pretreatment), exposed blocking of the catalytic action by all used catalysts. The catalytic effect could be observed when catalytic ozonation was used as a polishing step after electrocoagulation (EC). Although the catalytic effect could be observe for all catalysts then, especially in the removal of colorless by-products, the AC was exposed as the most effective. This contributed to 35% and 40% of TOC and COD removal. While only 18% and 23% of TOC and COD were removed in the same process without AC. The decrease in toxicity was 30%. The results of the study revealed the complexity of the issue and resulted in an extensive discussion devoted to the basis of the catalytic activity of each catalyst.

Use of alternating current for colored water purification by anodic oxidation with SS/PbO2 and Pb/PbO2 electrodes

This paper suggests a new alternative for the acceleration of dye removal by adopting alternating current instead of direct current in the treatment of methylene blue solutions and industrials effluents, using anodic oxidation on Pb/PbO₂ and stainless steel (SS)/PbO₂ anodes. A comparative study of the influence of electrolyte support (NaCl, NaNO₃, and Na₂SO₄) on the anodic oxidation performance and the anode stability was performed. The best results were obtained in presence of NaCl where the color removal percentage reached about 80.13% and 55.8%, for Pb/PbO₂ anodes, and 89.5% and 60.4% for the SS/PbO₂ anodes for alternating and direct current, respectively. Treatment in alternating current conditions enhanced the removal speed. Atomic absorption analysis confirmed the decrease of the release of (Pb²⁺) ions to much lower values compared with direct current and to those allowed by the Standards. LC/MS and phytotoxicity analyses confirmed the non-toxicity of the generated by-products during the anodic oxidation of methylene blue and the possibility of the reuse of the treated water.
