Sediment-Water Exchange, Spatial Variations, and Ecological Risk Assessment of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) in the Songhua River, China

Multimedia distribution, dynamics, and seasonal variation of PAHs in Songhua wetland: Implications for ice-influenced conditions

The knowledge of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in wetlands remains limited. There is a research need for the dynamics between interfaces of multimedia when ice is present in this fragile ecosystem. In this study, sediment, open-water, sub-ice water, and ice samples were collected from the Songhua wetland to study the behaviors of PAHs with and without influences from ice. The concentration of all individual PAHs in sub-ice water (370-1100 ng/L) were higher than the open-water collected from non-ice-covered seasons (50-250 ng/L). Enrichment of PAHs in the ice of wetland was found, particularly for high-molecular-weight PAHs (HMW). This could be attributed to the relatively lower polarity of hydrocarbons compounds, making them more likely to remain in the ice layer during freezing. Source assessments reveal common sources for sub-ice water and ice, which differ from those in the open water in non-ice-covered seasons. This difference is primarily attributed to heating activities in the Harbin during winter. The average percentage contributions were 79% for sub-ice water and 36% for ice related to vehicle exhausts and coal combustion. Additionally, wood burning contributed 25% to sub-ice water and 62% to ice. Sediment in the wetland was found to serve as a final deposit particularly for heavier PAHs, especially those with 6 rings. Sediment also has the potential to act as a source for the secondary emission of low-molecular-weight PAHs (LMW) congeners into the water. PAHs in wetland displayed low ecological risk, while HMW PAHs with relative higher ecological risk is recommended to be further monitored.

Occurrence and ecological risks of flonicamid and its metabolites in multiple substrates from intensive rice-vegetable rotations in tropical China

Rice-vegetable rotations are dominant in (sub)-tropical agriculture worldwide. However, fate and risks of the insecticide flonicamid (FLO) and its main degradates (collectively called FLOMs) in multiple substrates from those cropping systems remain largely unknown. In this study, we characterized residual concentrations, driving factors, transport, and potential ecological risks of FLOMs in different substrates in 28 tropical rice-vegetable rotations. Concentrations (median) of FLOMs were 0.013-3.03 (0.42) ng g-1 in plants, 0.012-1.92 (0.23) ng g-1 in soil, 0.029-0.63 (0.126) μg L-1 in water, and 0.002-0.398 (0.055) ng g-1 in sediments. Flonicamid and its metabolite N-(4-trifluoromethylnicotinoyl) glycine were the dominant species in the four substrates (84.1 % to 88.5 %). Plants had the highest levels of FLOMs, with the highest bioconcentration factor in peppers. According to boosted regression trees coupled with a partial least squares structural equation model, levels and composition of FLOMs showed high spatiotemporal and crop-related patterns in different substrates, with patterns highly codetermined by agricultural practices (e.g., crop type and FLO/neonicotinoid/pyrethroid applications), substrate parameters (e.g., pH, organic matter or total organic carbon), and climate features (e.g., wet/dry seasons). Moreover, a fugacity method indicated differences in transport and partitioning patterns in different substrates during rice and vegetable planting periods. Integrated substrate risk assessment of FLOMs contamination was conducted based on species-sensitive distributions and substrate weight index. Although overall risks of FLOM contamination in tropical rice-vegetable rotations were negligible to low, the highest risks were in soils, vegetable planting periods, and a central intensively planted area.

Spatiotemporal distribution and particle-water partitioning of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in Bohai Sea, China

The Bohai Sea is one of the most polluted marine areas in China with polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) due to its unique hydrological and geographical environment. To investigate differences in PAH concentrations, composition, and particle-water partitioning before and after the rainy reason, water samples were collected during two surveying voyages covering most of the area of the Bohai Sea. Total and dissolved PAH concentrations were higher during the June voyage (total PAHs: 32.29 ± 15.18 ng/L, dissolved PAHs: 31.25 ± 15.26 ng/L) than the August voyage (total PAHs: 15.98 ± 6.39 ng/L, dissolved PAHs: 11.21 ± 5.59 ng/L). The opposite trend was observed for particulate PAHs (June: 1.04 ± 1.01 ng/L, August: 4.78 ± 2.96 ng/L). Among particulate PAHs, an unusually high proportion (65.07%) of low-molecular-weight (LMW) PAHs was observed during the August voyage, which was significantly higher than the proportion during the June voyage (21.86%). This high proportion was inconsistent with the general distribution of PAHs in the aquatic environment according to their physicochemical properties. The excess LMW PAHs adsorbed on suspended particulate matter arose mainly from soil affected by the petrochemical industry of the Bohai Economic Rim, and were carried with particles on runoff into the Bohai Sea during the rainy season. An estimated 5.49 t of LMW PAHs transitioned from the particulate phase to the dissolved phase during the rainy season. This transfer of LMW PAHs from coastal soil to the water column may be an important source of PAHs in the Bohai Sea.

Occurrence and water-sediment exchange of systemic insecticides and their transformation products in an agriculture-dominated basin

Neonicotinoids (NEOs) and fipronil (FIP) are ubiquitous in aquatic environment, yet the transformation and water-sediment exchange are largely unknown for these systemic insecticides and their transformation products (TPs). Herein, occurrence, field-based partitioning coefficients, and fugacity fractions (ff) of NEOs, FIP, and their TPs were analyzed in the drainage and receiving rivers near a rice paddy field. NEOs and FIPs were frequently detected in the sediments with concentrations of TPs being often higher than the parent compounds. Average ff values of NEOs (0.944-1.00) were larger than those of FIPs (0.399-0.716), indicating NEOs had a greater tendency to diffuse from sediment into water. Similar as well-studied hydrophobic compounds, hydrophobicity was the main factor impacting the water-sediment exchange of moderately hydrophobic FIPs. Alternatively, electrostatic interactions governed the fate of hydrophilic NEOs in water-sediment system. The log Kd values of NEOs were positively correlated with their N/C ratios (p < 0.05), possibly because the negatively charged sediments (zeta potential were from -19.1 ± 0.6 to -5.84 ± 0.57 mV) generated electrostatic attraction with amino functional group. Our study highlighted the ubiquitousness of TPs and distinct water-sediment interaction for moderately hydrophobic and hydrophilic insecticides in an agriculture-dominated watershed.

Organochlorine Compounds in the Amur (Heilong) River Basin (2000-2020): A Review

Persistent organic pollutants (POPs) are well-known contaminants that raise serious concerns, even more than 20 years after they were banned. Their worldwide distribution and persistence necessitate continuous monitoring in all components of the environment. The most challenging issues of POP regulation are associated with international water resources because their solutions require international cooperation in environment protection. This review provides data on various POPs (DDT, HCH, endrin, dieldrin, and PCBs) and their concentrations in aquatic organisms inhabiting the Amur River basin, one of the most poorly explored regions of Northeast Asia. Most studies have been conducted in the Songhua River (China), a tributary of the Amur River, which indicates that large inland bodies of water, especially those of international importance, require more extensive research.

Temporal-spatial variation, source forensics of PAHs and their derivatives in sediment from Songhua River, Northeastern China

The distribution patterns and health risk assessment of nitrated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (NPAHs), hydroxy polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (OH-PAHs), and regular 16 priority polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in sediment from the Songhua River in northeastern China were investigated in this research. During dry seasons, concentrations of 16 USEPA priority PAHs, OH-PAHs, and NPAHs were extremely high, with average values of 1220 ± 288, 317 ± 641, 2.54 ± 3.98, and 12.2 ± 22.1 ng/g (dry weight, dw). The dry period level was confirmed to be 4 times greater than the wet period concentration. Modeling with positive matrix factorization (PMF) and estimation of diagnostic isomeric ratios were applied for identifying sources, according to the positive matrix factorization model: vehicle emissions (38.1%), biomass burning (25%), petroleum source (23.4%), and diesel engines source (13.5%) in wet season as well as wood combustion (44.1%), vehicle source (40.2%), coke oven (10.8%), and biomass burning (4.9%) in the dry season. The greatest seasonal variability was attributed to high molecular weight compounds (HMW PAHs). BaP was confirmed to be 81% carcinogenic in this study, which offers convincing proof of the escalating health issues.

A review of spatiotemporal patterns of neonicotinoid insecticides in water, sediment, and soil across China

Neonicotinoid insecticides (NNIs) have been widely used to control insect pests, while their environmental residues and associated hazardous impacts on human and ecosystem health have attracted increasing attention worldwide. In this study, we examined the current levels and associated spatial and temporal patterns of NNIs in multiple environmental media across China. Concentrations of NNIs in surface water, sediment, and soil were in the range of 9.94-755 ng·L^-1, 0.07-8.30 ng·g^-1 DW, and 0.009-356 ng·g^-1 DW, respectively. The high levels of NNIs in surface water, such as in Yangtze River (755 ng·L^-1), North River (539 ng·L^-1), Nandu River (519 ng·L^-1), and Minjiang River (514 ng·L^-1), were dominated by imidacloprid, thiamethoxam, and acetamiprid due to their extensive use. The levels of NNIs in sediments were relatively low, and the highest concentration (8.30 ng·g^-1 DW) was observed in Dongguan ditch. Sediment-water exchange calculated from fugacity fraction indicated that NNIs in sediment can be released back into the water due to their high solubility and low K_OW. Soils from agricultural zones contained the largest residual NNIs, with imidacloprid concentrations in cultivated soil reaching 119 ng·g^-1 DW. The calculated leaching potential showed that clothianidin has the highest migration potential to deep soil or groundwater. The monitored data of NNIs presented a decreasing trend from 2016 to 2018, which might be caused by the implementation of relevant control policies for NNI applications. The high levels of NNIs mainly occurred in southern China due to frequent agricultural activities and warm and humid meteorological conditions. The results from this study improve our understanding of the pollution levels and environmental behavior of NNIs in different environmental media across China and provide new knowledge that is needed for making future control policies for NNIs production and application.

Multimedia distribution of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in the Wang Lake Wetland, China

The Wang Lake Wetland is a highly valued area that is protected due to its high biodiversity. The wetland has a complicated hydrological regime and is subject to frequent human disturbance. We hypothesize that fluctuating hydrology and human activities have varied contributions to the temporal and spatial variations of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in the wetland. Soil (SS), sediment (SD), and water, to acquire dissolved phase (DP) and suspended particulate matter (SPM), samples were collected from eight locations during low- and high-flow periods to elucidate multimedia phase distribution and transport of PAHs. Following the onset of the rainy season, the concentration of SPM-associated PAHs increased significantly, while the DP PAHs remained stable. Individual PAH ratios showed that, although pyrogenic sources are common, petrogenic derived compounds are the main source of PAHs in the Wang Lake Wetland. During the high-flow period, the empirical values for logarithms of the organic carbon-normalized partition coefficients (log K_OC) of individual PAH-congeners were lower than the corresponding field-observed log K_OC values from the SPM-DP and SD-DP systems, reflecting the complexity in evaluating multi-phase PAH partitioning. During the high-flow period, temperature-driven changes may have changed the sediment from a sink to a source for some high molecular weight PAHs. It was determined that human activities governed the PAH loading in the low-flow period, whereas during high-flow conditions, increased rainfall, higher temperatures, and fishery activity are the main factors controlling PAH input to the Wang Lake Wetland.

Ecological and AhR-mediated risk assessment of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and polybrominated diphenyl ethers on multiple aquatic species in river water: A combined chemical analysis and in silico approach

Assessing the adverse health risks at molecular endpoints to various aquatic organisms could be an urgent issue. In this manuscript, the ecological and AhR-mediated risk of sixteen polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and six polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) in surface water of Dongjiang River, Southern China was evaluated using chemical analysis and in silico approaches. Average concentrations of ∑₁₆PAHs and ∑₆PBDEs were 586.3 ng/L and 2.672 ng/L in the dry season (DS), and 366.8 ng/L and 2.554 ng/L in the wet season (WS). Concentrations of PAHs during the DS were significantly higher than that in the WS, while no obvious seasonal distribution was observed for PBDEs. Only Ant and BaP in all congers of PAHs posed low to medium ecological risks, and PBDEs posed a low ecological risk. Moreover, AhR-mediated risk from PAHs was two orders of magnitude higher that from PBDEs, and the AhR-mediated toxicity on frog and eel were higher than those on other aquatic organisms in Dongjiang River. Phe and BDE209 were the significant contributor to the AhR-mediated risk induced by PAHs and PBDEs, respectively. This study is the first attempt to assess AhR-mediated risk of river water in multiple aquatic organisms.

Nanoplastic State and Fate in Aquatic Environments: Multiscale Modeling

We now know that nanoplastics can harm aquatic organisms, but understanding ecological risk starts with understanding fate. We coupled population balance and fugacity models to predict the conditions under which nanoplastics remain as single particles, aggregate, or sediment and to predict their capacity to concentrate organic pollutants. We carried out simulations across a broad range of nanoplastic concentrations, particle sizes, and particle-particle interactions under a range of salinity and organic matter conditions. The model predicts that across plastic materials and environmental conditions, nanoplastics will either remain mostly dispersed or settle as aggregates with natural colloids. Nanoplastics of different size classes respond dissimilarly to concentration, ionic strength, and organic matter content, indicating that the sizes of nanoplastics to which organisms are exposed likely shift across ecological zones. We implemented a fugacity model of the Great Lakes to assess the organic pollution payload carried by nanoplastics, generating the expectation that nanoplastics would carry nine times more pollutants than microsized plastics and a threshold concentration of 10 μg/L at which they impact pollutant distribution. Our simulations across a broad range of factors inform future experimentation by highlighting the relative importance of size, concentration, material properties, and interactions in driving nanoplastic fate in aquatic environments.

Shift in the distribution and fate of perfluoroalkyl acids by sluice gates in the multi-environment media of rivers

The impact of sluice operations on the distribution and fate of perfluoroalkyl acids (PFAAs) remains poorly understood. In this study, the distribution of PFAAs was investigated in water, suspended particles, sediment, and pore water from the upstream and downstream sections of six sluice gates along the Wangyu River, China. The target PFAAs were widely distributed in the dissolved phase (∑PFAAs: 447.61 ± 180.26 ng/L), particle phase (∑PFAAs: 2040.95 ± 1870.88 ng/g dw), sedimentary phase (∑PFAAs: 39.42 ± 35.38 ng/g dw), and pore water phase (∑PFAAs: 8172.54 ± 4278.60 ng/L). Our data suggest predominant detections of short-chain PFAAs such as perfluorobutanoic acid (PFBA) and perfluorohexanoic acid (PFHxA) in the four environmental media. Sediment pore water appeared as an essential repository and potential source for PFAA re-release to the river environment. The levels of PFAAs in the dissolved and suspended particle phase upstream of the sluices were significantly lower than those downstream, while the situation in the sediment and pore water phase was the opposite. Sluice operation caused PFAA redistribution among the multi-environment media but did not change the PFAA composition, which had the significant effect on the partition behavior of perfluoroalkyl carboxylic acids (PFCAs) between particles and water, as well as changed the migration pattern of PFOA, PFNA and PFOS from equilibrium to the migration state. Quantitative prediction models were developed for simulating fate of PFAAs in gate-controlled river, and the major factors affecting the distribution and fate of PFAAs were identified. Our findings provide insights into the redistribution mechanisms of PFAAs and an understanding of their environmental fate.

Presence of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons among multi-media in a typical constructed wetland located in the coastal industrial zone, Tianjin, China: Occurrence characteristics, source apportionment and model simulation

In-depth understanding and accurately predicting the occurrence and fate of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in constructed wetlands (CWs) is extremely crucial for optimizing the CWs construction and strengthening the risk control. However, few studies have focused on the PAHs among sediment-water-plant and model simulation in CWs. In this study, sediment, surface water and reed samples were gathered and analyzed from a typical CW. The concentrations of 16 PAHs (Σ₁₆PAHs) in sediments, surface water and reeds ranged from 620 to 4277 μg/kg, 114 to 443 ng/L and 74.5 to 362 μg/kg, respectively. The coefficients of variation (CV) were calculated as 0.796, 0.431 and 0.473 for the above three media respectively, indicating that the spatial distribution variation was medium intensity. The fugacity fraction (ff) suggested that sediments might act as the secondary release source of most PAHs. According to the diagnostic ratios and principal component analysis-multiple linear regression (PCA-MLR), PAHs in this CW mainly come from fossil fuels combustion and petroleum leakage. PAHs in sediments showed high ecological risk at water inlet and moderate risk at the other functional zones, while low risks for surface water at all functional zones. Although the human health risk assessment indicated relatively low cancer risk, the health risk still cannot be ignored with the continuous input and accumulation of exogenous PAHs. A mathematical model covering the hydraulics parameters and composition characteristics of the wetland was established, and its reliability was verified. The simulated results obtained by the established model were basically consistent with the measured values. In addition, the total remove efficiency of PAHs in surface water was 40.2%, which calculated by the simulated model. This work provides helpful insight into the comprehension of occurrence and fate of PAHs among multi-media in CWs.

Occurrence, variations, and risk assessment of neonicotinoid insecticides in Harbin section of the Songhua River, northeast China

Neonicotinoid insecticides (NNIs) have been intensively used and exploited, resulting in their presence and accumulation in multiple environmental media. We herein investigated the current levels of eight major NNIs in the Harbin section of the Songhua River in northeast China, providing the first systematic report on NNIs in this region. At least four NNIs in water and three in sediment were detected, with total concentrations ranging from 30.8 to 135 ng L^-1 and from 0.61 to 14.7 ng g^-1 dw, respectively. Larger spatial variations in surface water NNIs concentrations were observed in tributary than mainstream (p < 0.05) due to the intensive human activities (e.g., horticulture, urban landscaping, and household pet flea control) and the discharge of wastewater from many treatment plants. There was a significant positive correlation (p < 0.05) between the concentrations of residual imidacloprid (IMI), clothianidin (CLO), and Σ₄NNIs in the sediment and total organic carbon (TOC). Due to its high solubility and low octanol-water partition coefficient (K _ow), the sediment-water exchange behavior shows that NNIs in sediments can re-enter into the water body. Human exposure risk was assessed using the relative potency factor (RPF), which showed that infants have the highest exposure risk (estimated daily intake (ΣIMI_eq EDI): 31.9 ng kg^-1 bw·d^-1). The concentration thresholds of NNIs for aquatic organisms in the Harbin section of the Songhua River were determined using the species sensitivity distribution (SSD) approach, resulting in a value of 355 ng L^-1 for acute hazardous concentration for 5% of species (HC₅) and 165 ng L^-1 for chronic HC₅. Aquatic organisms at low trophic levels were more vulnerable to potential harm from NNIs.

Fate and Occurrence of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons and Their Derivatives in Water and Sediment from Songhua River, Northeast China

The Songhua River is one of the most populated and oldest industrial areas in Northeast China. To understand the sources and distribution of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and their derivatives, such as 16 priority (PAHs), 33 methylated (Me-PAHs), and 12 nitrated (NPAHs) in river water and sediment, were noticed. The concentrations of ∑PAHs, ∑Me-PAHs, and ∑NPAHs in river water scaled from 135 to 563, 9.36 to 711, and 1.26 to 64.7 ng L−1, with mean values of 286, 310, and 17.9 ng L−1, and those in sediments were from 35.8 to 2000 ng g−1, 0.62 to 394 ng g−1, and 0.28 to 176 ng g−1 (dry weight) with mean values of 283, 103, and 21.7 ng g−1. The compositions proved that two-ring and three-ring compounds of PAHs, NPAHs, and four-ring, six-ring of Me-PAHs were prevalent in water samples; in contrast, four-ring dominated in sediments. Principal components analysis (PCA) and diagnostic ratios confirmed that pollutant source was mixed petrogenic and pyrogenic origin. The fugacity fraction (ƒƒ) was also calculated to explain the trend of sediment–water exchange, high ƒƒ values found in summer, for most HMW PAHs and Me-PAHs that these substances acted as a secondary source of emissions from sediment to water. The risk assessment for water was categorized as high.

Seasonal dynamics of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons between water and sediment in a tide-dominated estuary and ecological risks for estuary management

Understanding the transportation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) across the water-sediment interface can help researchers to partition their sources while being particularly important for managing PAH input. This study fully explored the PAH dynamics between water and sediment in a tide-dominated estuary. The monthly concentration of ΣPAHs in sediments ranged from 325.47 to 1098.49 ng/g (dry weight), while that in water varied from 154.00 to 725.80 ng/L. The PAH levels found in the present study were relatively high in comparison with other estuarine systems worldwide. The high-molecular-weight PAHs were more readily redissolved from sediment to water, while the low-molecular-weight PAHs were mostly in an unsaturated state with diffusion occurring from water to sediment. The seasonal differences of ΣPAHs were significant and were largely controlled by the changes in sediment properties, marine currents, and water temperature. The diagnostic ratios revealed that predominant sources of PAHs were pyrogenic processes and petrogenic inputs.

In-depth investigation of Sodium percarbonate as oxidant of PAHs from soil contaminated with diesel oil

Sodium percarbonate (SPC, 2Na₂CO₃∙3H₂O₂), is a compound that can be used under multiple environmental applications. In this work, SPC was employed as oxidant in the treatment of soil contaminated with diesel oil. The soil samples were collected during the earthmoving stage of RNEST Oil Refinery (Petrobras), Brazil. Then, the samples were air-dried, mixed and characterized. Subsequently, raw soil was contaminated with diesel and treated by photo-Fenton reaction (H₂O₂/Fe²⁺/UV). SPC played a significant role in the generation of hydroxyl radicals under the catalytic effect of ferrous ions (Fe²⁺), hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂) and radiation. These radicals provoked the photodegradation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), in the soil remediation. A factorial design 3³ was carried out to assess the variables which most influenced the decrease in total organic carbon (TOC). The study was performed with the following variables: initial concentration of [H₂O₂] and [Fe²⁺], between 190.0 and 950.0 mmol L^-1 and 0.0-14.4 mmol L^-1, respectively. UV radiation was supplied from sunlight, blacklight lamps, and system without radiation. All experiments were performed with 5.0 g of contaminated soil in 50.0 mL of solution. The initial concentration of Fe²⁺ showed the statistically most significant effect. The oxidation efficiency evaluated in the best condition showed a decrease from 34,765 mg kg^-1 to 15,801 mg kg^-1 in TOC and from 85.750 mg kg^-1 to 20.770 mg kg^-1 in PAHs content. Moreover, the sums of low and high molecular weight polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (LMW-PAHs and HMW-PAHs) were 19.537 mg kg^-1 and 1.233 mg kg^-1, respectively. Both values are within the limits recommended by the United Sates Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) and evidenced the satisfactory removal of PAHs from contaminated soil, being an alternative to classic oxidation protocols.

Cross-interface transfer of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in a shallow urban lake in Shanghai, China based on the fugacity model

Shallow urban lakes are important urban ecosystems; however, these systems are subject to severe polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) contamination. An understanding of the distribution and dynamics of PAHs in lakes is required to restore the functions of lake ecosystems and to ensure the ecological security of urban water sources. The Quantitative Water Air Sediment Interaction (QWASI) model and partition coefficient and fugacity fraction methods were applied to estimate the multimedia transfers of PAHs in Dianshan Lake, a typical shallow lake in Shanghai, China. In addition, some new concepts and methods related to PAH transfers were introduced. The results showed that while the gas-solid partition in the area remained in non-equilibrium, the influence of pollution sources tended to weaken. Atmospheric advection was the main source of PAHs to the lake, and a portion of the net loss of advection was transformed into total flux of cross-interface transfers, in which transport fluxes from air to water and from water to sediment were dominant, with a significant correlation between the two types of transfer. The large resuspension of high molecular weight (HMW)-PAHs occurred, possibly related to frequent hydrodynamic disturbances. Furthermore, this study explored the distribution of PAHs among different compartments and the seasonal variation of multimedia transfers. Sensitivity analysis showed that the model is remarkably sensitive to four parameters including temperature and advection. Monte Carlo uncertainty analysis verified that the simulation results were stable and reliable. The results can provide a theoretical basis for the monitoring and control of shallow lake pollution.

Distribution, sources, and behavior of PAHs in estuarine water systems exemplified by Salt River, Taiwan

Water, suspended particulate matter (SPM), and sediment samples were collected from Salt River in Taiwan and analyzed the concentrations of 16 types of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). The analysis results were used to examine the distribution, source, partition behavior, and potential ecological risks of PAHs in the estuarine water systems. The mean concentration of total PAHs in water, SPM, and sediment samples was 0.485-10.2 μg/L, 26.7-169 mg/kg dw, and 0.343-29.4 mg/kg dw, respectively. The highest concentration was found at the river mouth and decreased toward the river and sea with the tide. The distribution of the diagnostic ratios of PAHs showed that the combustion of coal and petroleum products are the main sources of PAHs in Salt River. The in site organic carbon normalized partition coefficients for SPM-water (K'_oc(SPMW)) and sediment-water (K'_oc(SedW)) were 2.8-4.5 and 4.6-6.0 (log units), respectively, increasing with the number of rings in PAHs. The values log K'_oc(SedW) and log K'_oc(SPM-W) showed a significant linear correlation with their octanol-water partition coefficients (p < 0.01), and their slopes were 0.427 and 0.316, respectively. The fugacity fraction was used to evaluate the exchange of PAHs in water-SPM-sediment systems. Results showed that in SPM, 2-4-ring PAHs tend to be released into water, whereas 5-6-ring PAHs in water tend to be adsorbed onto SPM. The exchange of PAHs between water and sediment occurs in the direction of adsorption onto sediment from water. The assessment of the mean risk quotient, total toxicity equivalence, and mean effect range-median quotient of PAHs showed that the PAHs in the water and SPM of Salt River may have moderate to high ecological risk. In sediment, PAHs in the lower reaches and estuary may pose moderate to high ecological risk, whereas PAHs in the middle and upper reaches show low to moderate ecological risk.

Effects of season and sediment-water exchange processes on the partitioning of pesticides in the catchment environment: Implications for pesticides monitoring

Current and historic pesticide use has potential to compromise e.g. drinking water sources due to both primary and secondary emission sources. Understanding the spatial and temporal dynamics of emissions might help inform management decisions. To explore this potential; water, sediment and soil samples were concurrently collected from the River Ugie, Scotland over four seasons. Occurrence and fate of nine pesticides including four historic-use pesticides (HUPs): simazine, atrazine, isoproturon and permethrin, and five current-use pesticides (CUPs): metaldehyde, chlorpyrifos, chlortoluron, epoxiconazole and cypermethrin were analysed. Concentrations of target pesticides in water, sediments and soils were 4.5-45.6 ng·L^-1, 0.9-4.6 ng·g^-1 dw (dry weight) and 1.7-8.0 ng·g^-1 dw, respectively. Concentrations of pesticides in water were found to significantly differ between seasons (p < 0.05). Significant differences in pesticide concentrations also occurred spatially within sediments (p < 0.01), indicating spatial and temporal associations with pesticide use. Sediment-water exchange showed that the sediment acts as an important secondary emission source particularly for the HUPs, while current local application and sediment emission are both major driving forces for CUPs in the riverine environment. These findings were supported by concentration ratios between different media, which showed potential as a preliminary assessment tool for identifying the source of pollutants in aquatic environments.

Spatiotemporal distribution, source apportionment and ecological risk assessment of PBDEs and PAHs in the Guanlan River from rapidly urbanizing areas of Shenzhen, China

In this study, nine congeners of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) and sixteen congeners of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were measured in water samples to elucidate their spatial distribution, congener profiles, sources and ecological risks in the Guanlan River during both the dry season (DS) and the wet season (WS). The concentration of Σ₉PBDE ranged from 58.40 to 186.35 ng/L with an average of 115.72 ng/L in the DS, and from 8.20 to 37.80 ng/L with an average of 22.15 ng/L in the WS. Meanwhile, the concentration of Σ₁₆PAHs was ranged from 121.80 to 8371.70 ng/L with an average of 3271.18 ng/L in the DS and from 1.85 to 7124.25 ng/L with an average of 908.11 ng/L in the WS. The concentrations of PBDEs and PAHs in the DS were significantly higher than those in the WS, probably due to the dilution of the river during the rainy season. Moreover, the spatial distribution of pollutants revealed decreasing trend in the concentration from upstream to downstream and almost identical pattern was observed during both seasons. The source apportionment suggested that penta-BDE and to some extent octa-BDE commercial products were major sources of PBDEs in the study area. However, the sources of PAHs were mainly comprised of fossil fuels and biomass burning, followed by the petroleum products and their mixtures. The results of the ecological risk assessment indicated PBDEs contamination posed high ecological risks, while PAHs exhibited low or no ecological risks in the study area. Consistent with the environmental levels, the ecological risks of pollutants were relatively lower in the WS, compared to that in the DS. The results from this study would provide valuable baseline data and technical support for policy makers to protect the ecological environment of the Guanlan River.

Proximity to chemical equilibria among air, water, soil, and sediment as varied with partition coefficients: A case study of polychlorinated dibenzodioxins/furans, polybrominated diphenyl ethers, phthalates, and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons

To capture the pollutant distribution status among environmental media and to understand how the distribution varies with the pollutants' properties, we assessed a total of 225 fugacity ratios (FRs) of 45 semi-volatile organic compounds (SVOCs) (polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins/furans (PCDDs/Fs), polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), phthalates, and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs)) for five medium pairs (air-water, air-soil, water-sediment, soil-water, and soil-sediment) using the nationwide multimedia monitoring data. For many of the pollutants, fugacity was greatest in air (PCDFs and 6 heavy PAHs) and in sediment (PBDEs and 9 light PAHs) while lowest in soil for most of the pollutants. PAHs and phthalates appeared to be farther away from equilibrium than PCDDs/Fs and PBDEs. The ratios of "equilibrium improbable" FRs to all the FRs in each chemical group were 2%, 0%, 33.3%, and 28.9% for PCDDs/Fs, PBDEs, phthalates, and PAHs, respectively. FR_water/air of PAHs, FR_soil/air, and FR_{sediment/water} of the pollutant groups (except for PBDEs) decreased significantly (p < 0.01) with the partition coefficients, 1/K_air/water (1/K_aw), K_octanol/air (K_oa), and K_{octanol/water} (K_ow), respectively, even in the field conditions. The findings on FRs values provide valuable clues to identifying the media that would act as sink or source for certain chemicals and to using a more appropriate choice in the coherence test of environmental quality objectives, which should be important considerations in the management of chemical contamination in the environment.

Spatio-temporal distribution and sources identifications of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and their alkyl homolog in surface sediments in the central Arabian Gulf

The quantitative analysis of 18 parents and their alkyl homologs was performed in sediment samples from the central Arabian Gulf (Gulf) around Qatar Peninsula in six sequential seasons, winter 2014 to spring 2015, at 21 locations with a water depth range of 1.5-60 m. PAHs distribution was patchy with higher concentrations found inside semi-enclosed coastal areas like harbors and bays. The mean PAHs concentration was 112 ng·g^-1 dry weight with a range of 0.6 to 1560 ng·g^-1 and a variability coefficient of 2.4. The PAHs mean concentration was highest in the winter by a factor of 5 compared to mean summer concentration. A significant seasonal variability in the concentrations of ∑PAHs is mainly attributed to variability in the concentrations of the low molecular weight PAHs fraction and the less alkylated PAHs. Alkylated-PAHs were the most dominant PAHs comprising about 50% of the ∑PAHs, and with about 6 times higher than the mean concentrations in the winter compared to the mean summer concentration. The LPAHs concentrations correlated negatively with temperature and ∑PAHs correlated positively with % clay. Principal component analysis was used to identify sources of PAHs. PAHs in the Gulf have mixed sources with an estimated 57% from petroleum and 43% from pyrogenic sources. Coastal water hydrodynamics and lateral transport processes affect the distribution and composition of PAHs in the central Gulf.

Source identification of total petroleum hydrocarbons and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in PM10 and street dust of a hot spot for petrochemical production: Asaluyeh County, Iran

Total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPH) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are important pollutants that affect public health in urban areas, especially in developing and oil-rich countries such as Iran. This assesses the relationship between TPH and PAHs in street dust and suspended dust, and investigates toxicity level in the urban environment of the most important petrochemical center in Iran. For this purpose, 21 and 48 street dust samples were collected for TPH analysis and PAH analysis, respectively, in Asaluyeh County. Moreover, seven air dust samples were taken for PAH analysis. TPH concentrations ranged between 240 and 4400 mg kg-1, with a mean of 1371.43 mg kg-1. The maximum ∑PAH concentration (6016.3 mg kg-1) was detected in a petrochemical complex while the minimum ∑PAHs content (16.93 mg kg-1) was measured in an urban area. The mean concentrations of total PAHs in street dust particles were 491.35 mg kg-1 in summer and 304.04 mg kg-1 in winter. The results indicated that PAH concentration in summer was higher. PAH sources were identified using both PAHs ratios and robust statistical methods such as Generalized Estimating Equations (GEE), backward GEE, logistic regression, principal components analysis (PCA) in conjunction with multiple linear regression (MLR) and positive matrix factorization (PMF). The results showed that PAH species generally originate from pyrogenic sources and about 0.08% of TPH was typically PAHs. However, petrogenic sources of PAHs in the industrial areas were 11.2 times more abundant than in urban areas. Also, backward GEE model demonstrated that TPH is more influenced by HMW PAHs, particularly indene. Estimated incremental lifetime cancer risk (ILCR) was higher than 10-4, showing that Asaluyeh inhabitants (especially children and indoor workers) are probably exposed to cancer risk, particularly through dermal contact and dust ingestion.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) accumulation in different common sole (Solea solea) tissues from the North Adriatic Sea peculiar impacted area

This study extends our knowledge of the bioaccumulation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in marine organisms and investigates its possible determinants. PAH levels were measured in Solea solea tissue and in marine sediments collected from three areas of the northern Adriatic Sea characterized by different anthropic impacts (Venetian Lagoon, Po Delta, and fishing grounds off Chioggia). The possibility of differential PAH bioaccumulation in different tissues (muscle, liver and gills) was investigated by seeking relationships between mean individual and total PAH concentrations in tissue and sediment samples, the physicochemical properties of PAHs (rings and K_ow), and some key biological variables (lipid content of tissues, body size, habitat). The present study demonstrated that the lipid content might not be the only determinant of PAH bioaccumulation in common sole tissues. The habitat characteristics, the tissue types and some physicochemical properties of compounds were closely related to PAH bioaccumulation.
