Abstract
The role of vitamin D in the prevention of chronic diseases including cancer, has received a great deal of attention during the past few decades. The term "Cancer" represents multiple disease states with varying biological complexities. The strongest link between vitamin D and cancer is provided by ecological and studies like observational, in preclinical models. It is apparent that vitamin D exerts diverse biological responses in a tissue specific manner. Moreover, several human factors could affect bioactivity of vitamin D. The mechanism(s) underlying vitamin D initiated anti-carcinogenic effects are diverse and includes changes at the muti-system levels. The oncogenic environment could easily corrupt the traditional role of vitamin D or could ensure resistance to vitamin D mediated responses. Several researchers have identified gaps in our knowledge pertaining to the role of vitamin D in cancer. Further areas are identified to solidify the role of vitamin D in cancer control strategies.

Abstract
Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the fourth most commonly diagnosed cancer and the third leading cause of cancer-related deaths worldwide. A substantial body of literature supports the crucial role of vitamin D (VD) in the etiology, progression, prognosis, and treatment of cancer. Recent clinical studies have found an inverse correlation between CRC incidence and serum VD levels. However, the low water solubility of VD and its anticarcinogenic activity at supraphysiological plasma levels, which causes hypercalcemia, required carrier systems. Carbon-based nanomaterials are excellent eco-friendly candidates, with exceptional chemical resistance, efficient mechanical properties, and negligible weight. Furthermore, composite aerogels manufactured from these nanomaterials have gained interest due to their extensive surface areas and porous structures, which make them suitable for delivering drugs. Our research aimed to study the development of composite aerogels loaded with VD by utilizing carbon nanofibers (CNFs) in an aerogel matrix provided to colon cancer cells. For this purpose, Aero1 as a drug delivery system was first prepared and characterized using XRD, FTIR, and SEM methods. Biochemical methods were employed to evaluate the antiproliferative, apoptotic, and anti-migratory effects on colon cancer cells. FTIR and XRD measurements confirmed the production of aerogels. SEM analysis revealed that aerogels have a non-uniform surface. The findings showed that aerogels can effectively deliver VD to the colon cancer cells, while also inhibiting cancer cell proliferation and migration. This research suggests that the Aero1 drug delivery system could be a valuable tool in the fight against colon cancer and other health issues.

Abstract
DNA methylation alteration is tissue-specific and play a pivotal role in regulating gene transcription during cell proliferation and survival. We aimed to detect genes regulated by DNA methylation, and then investigated whether the gene influenced cell proliferation or survival in adrenal cells. DNA methylation and qPCR analyses were performed in nonfunctioning adrenocortical adenoma (NFA, n = 12) and aldosterone-producing adenoma (APA, n = 35) samples. The VDR gene promoter was markedly hypomethylated in APA with ATP1A1 mutation, and the promoter methylation levels showed a significant inverse association with the transcripts in APA. ATP1A1 mutation led to VDR transcription in HAC15 cells, and VDR suppression abrogated ATP1A1 mutation-mediated cell proliferation in HAC15 cells. We demonstrated that APA with ATP1A1 mutation showed entire hypomethylation in the VDR promoter and abundant VDR mRNA and protein expression. VDR suppression abrogated ATP1A1 mutation-mediated cell proliferation in HAC15 cells. Abundant VDR expression would be essential for ATP1A1 mutation-mediated cell proliferation.

Abstract
Thyroid cancer has the fastest rising incidence among cancers, especially for differentiated thyroid carcinoma (DTC). Although the prognosis of DTC is relatively good, if it changes to anaplastic thyroid carcinoma (ATC), the prognosis will be very poor. The prognosis of DTC is largely depending on the degree of cell differentiation and proliferation. However, whether the vitamin D receptor (VDR) plays a role in regulating the proliferation and the differentiation of DTC cells is unclear. In the present study, we found that VDR was upregulated in DTC tissues compared to the adjacent non-cancerous tissue. Knockdown of VDR increased proliferation and decreased differentiation proliferation in DTC cells in vitro as well as DTC cell-derived xenografts in vivo. In contrast, overexpression of VDR had an opposite effect. Knockdown of E-cadherin abolished VDR-induced suppression of proliferation and enhancement of differentiation of the DTC cells. Knockdown of β-catenin partially reversed the effect of the VDR knockdown. VDR increases the levels of E-cadherin in the plasma membrane and decreases the levels of β-catenin in the nucleus. VDR binds to E-cadherin and β-catenin in the plasma membrane of the DTC cell. Taken together, VDR inhibits DTC cell proliferation and promotes differentiation via regulation of the E-cadherin/β-catenin complex, potentially representing novel clues for a therapeutic strategy to attenuate thyroid cancer progression.

Abstract
Maintaining an optimal vitamin D concentration reduces the risk of recurrence and extends survival time in patients after breast cancer treatment. Data on vitamin D deficiency among Polish women after breast cancer therapy are limited. Thus, the aim of the study was the analysis of vitamin D status in post-mastectomy patients, considering such factors as seasons, social habits, vitamin D supplementation and its measurements. The study involved 94 women after breast cancer treatment. Serum vitamin D concentration was measured, and a questionnaire, gathering demographic and clinical data regarding cancer, diet, exposure to sun radiation, and knowledge of recommendations on vitamin D supplementation, was delivered twice, in both winter and in summer. The control group consisted of 94 age-matched women with no oncological history. In women after breast cancer treatment, 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) deficiency was much more frequent than in the general population. Only about half of the patients supplemented vitamin D at the beginning of the study. After the first test and the issuing of recommendations on vitamin D supplementation, the percentage of vitamin D supplemented patients increased by about 30% in study groups. The average dose of supplement also increased. None of the women that were not supplementing vitamin D and were tested again in winter had optimal 25(OH)D concentration. It was concluded that vitamin deficiency is common in women treated for breast cancer. Medical advising about vitamin D supplementation and monitoring of 25(OH)D concentration should be improved.

Abstract
There has been a significant annual increase in the number of cases of uterine leiomyomas or fibroids (UF) among women of all races and ages across the world. A fortune is usually spent by the healthcare sector for fibroid-related treatments and management. Molecular studies have established the higher mutational heterogeneity in UF as compared to normal myometrial cells. The contribution of DNA damage and defects in repair responses further increases the mutational burden on the cells. This in turn leads to genetic instability, associated with cancer risk and other adverse reproductive health outcomes. Such and many more growing bodies of literature have highlighted the genetic/molecular, biochemical and clinical aspects of UF; none the less there appear to be a lacuna bridging the bench to bed gap in addressing and preventing this disease. Presented here is an exhaustive review of not only the molecular mechanisms underlying the predisposition to the disease but also possible strategies to effectively diagnose, prevent, manage, and treat this disease.

Abstract
Vitamin D (VD) is a fat-soluble prohormone well known for its role in regulating calcium and phosphate metabolism. It has been clinically used for many years to prevent rickets in children, osteomalacia, and osteoporosis in adults. VD insufficiency is a common medical condition, and many supplements are available in the market in order to increase serum 25-hydroxy VD levels to recommended amounts. Over the course of the last decades, it has become increasingly clear that calcitriol, an active form of VD, regulates multiple cellular processes with effects on normal and malignant cell growth and differentiation, and on the immune and cardiovascular function. Increasing evidence supports the role of the VD system in cancer prevention and therapy. Due to many pleiotropic and beneficial effects in extra-skeletal disorders, VD has gained potential and become an interesting active for encapsulation into drug delivery systems. The purpose of this review is to present the diversity of drug delivery systems that have been reported for VD or VD derivatives in an orderly manner across the following categories: Oral administration, application on the skin, cancer prevention/therapy, and other diseases or routes of administration.

Abstract
Uterine fibroids (UFs) are the most common benign neoplastic threat to women's health and associated with DNA damage and genomic instability. Hypovitaminosis D is a known risk factor for UFs, especially among African Americans. Vitamin D3 has been shown to effectively inhibit UF phenotype, but its mechanisms remain unclear. We hypothesize that Vitamin D3 ameliorates UFs by recovering the damaged DNA repair system, thus inhibits tumor progression. We compared the DNA damage status and Vitamin D receptor (VDR) expression between normal myometrial and UF primary cells. Unrepaired DNA double-strand breaks (DSBs) accumulated but VDR expression decreased in UFs. The RNA and protein levels of key DNA repair members belonging to DNA DSB sensors (MRE11, NBS1, RAD50), mediators and effectors (CHECK2, BRCA1, RAD51) were downregulated in UFs compared with myometrial cells. VDR KD induced DSB accumulation and DNA damage response (DDR) defects in myometrial cells. Using the DNA damage PCR array, the expression of many additional DNA repair genes was downregulated in VDR KD cells. Treatment of UF cells with Vitamin D3 (100 nM) significantly decreased DNA damage and restored DDR concomitant with VDR induction. Notably, the PCR array demonstrated that among 75 downregulated genes after VDR KD, 67 (89.3%) were upregulated after vitamin D3 treatment. These studies demonstrate a novel link between DNA damage and the vitamin D3/VDR axis in UFs. Vitamin D3 suppresses the UF phenotype through orchestrated targeting at multiple molecules in DNA repair pathways, thus offering novel mechanistic insights into the clinical effectiveness of vitamin D3 on UFs.

Abstract
Introduction Differential expression of genes encoding cytochrome P450 (CYP) and other oxygenases enzymes involved in biotransformation mechanisms of endogenous and exogenous compounds can lead to oral tumor development. Objective We aimed to identify the expression profile of these genes, searching for susceptibility biomarkers in oral squamous cell carcinoma. Patients and Methods Sixteen oral squamous cell carcinoma samples were included in this study (eight tumor and eight adjacent non-tumor tissues). Gene expression quantification was performed using TaqMan Array Human CYP450 and other Oxygenases 96-well plate (Applied Biosystems) by real time qPCR. Protein quantification was performed by ELISA and IHC methods. Bioinformatics tools were used to find metabolic pathways related to the enzymes encoded by differentially expressed genes. Results. CYP27B1, CYP27A1, CYP2E1, CYP2R1, CYP2J2, CYP2U1, CYP4F12, CYP4X1, CYP4B1, PTGIS, ALOX12, and MAOB genes presented differential expression in the oral tumors. After correction by multiple tests, only the PTGIS (Prostaglandin I2 Synthase) gene presented significant differential expression (P < 0.05). The PTGIS gene and protein were reduced in oral tumors. Conclusion PTGIS presents downexpression in oral tumors. PTGIS play an important role in the arachidonic acid metabolism. Arachidonic acid and/or metabolites are derived from this pathway, which can influence the regulation of important physiological mechanisms in tumorigenesis process.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Low levels of 1-25-dihydroxyvitamin D3 [1,25(OH)2D3] in serum may be a risk factor for several tumor types. Also, high cathelicidin antimicrobial peptide (CAMP) expression is regarded to be important against tumor progression. We evaluated the potential importance of 1,25(OH)2D3 in the diagnosis and treatment of papillary thyroid cancer (PTC). MATERIAL AND METHODS The preoperative serum level of 1,25(OH)2D3 was measured using a double-antibody sandwich enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Vitamin D3 receptor (VDR) expression was detected by streptavidin-peroxidase immunohistochemical staining in PTC specimens. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves were created to assess the diagnostic value of 1,25(OH)2D3. The effect of 1,25(OH)2D3 on the proliferation and apoptosis of PTC cell lines were studied by Cell Counting Kit (CCK)-8 assay and Annexin V/propidium iodide staining, respectively. CAMP expression was measured by qRT-PCR and western blotting. Short interfering RNAs were used to reduce CAMP expression in PTC cell lines. RESULTS The preoperative serum level of 1,25(OH)2D3 in PTC was obviously lower than that in nodular goiter (NG) (P<0.05). The ROC curve suggested that 1,25(OH)2D3 might serve as a potential diagnostic value at a cutoff of 20.13 pg/mL, The VDR showed higher expression in PTC than in paired adjacent non-cancerous tissue. 1,25(OH)2D3 inhibited the proliferation and induced the apoptosis of PTC cells, and increased CAMP expression significantly, whereas CAMP knockdown demonstrated opposite effects. CONCLUSIONS 1,25(OH)2D3 may be a new, potential biomarker for the identification of PTC and NG. It may also become 1,25(OH)2D3 may a potential target for drug action to treat PTC through CAMP.

Abstract
BACKGROUND African-American breast cancer survivors commonly demonstrate low serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D). Decreased cutaneous conversion, high levels of adiposity, and even breast cancer treatment may influence vitamin D status. Previous investigations have analyzed African-American women in aggregate with other breast cancer survivors and have not comprehensively addressed these influential factors. OBJECTIVES To determine the prevalence of low serum 25(OH)D in an exclusively African-American cohort of female breast cancer survivors with overweight/obesity and to evaluate the role of ultraviolet (UV) light exposure, body composition, and dietary sources of vitamin D on serum 25(OH)D levels. DESIGN Cross-sectional. PARTICIPANTS Pre- and postmenopausal African-American breast cancer survivors (n=244) were recruited from various neighborhoods in the city of Chicago, IL, between September 2011 and September 2014 for a larger weight loss trial. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES Demographic, clinical, anthropometric (body mass index [calculated as kg/m2], waist circumference, and hip circumference), blood specimen, dietary intake (food frequency questionnaire), and sun behavior data were collected by trained study personnel before trial participation. Dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry was used to quantify adiposity (total, percentage, regional, visceral) and lean mass. Serum 25(OH)D was used as the biomarker reflective of vitamin D status. STATISTICAL ANALYSES Mean (±standard deviation), frequencies, and multivariate linear regression modeling. RESULTS The average participant was 57.4 years old (±10.0), 6.9 years (±5.2) from initial breast cancer diagnosis with a body mass index of 36.2 (±6.2). The majority of participants (60%) reported habitual oral vitamin D supplementation with mean intake of 327 IU (±169). Vitamin D deficiency was prevalent in 81% and 43%, when the cut points of the Endocrine Society (<30 ng/mL or <75 nmol/L) and the Institute of Medicine (<20 ng/mL or <50 nmol/L) were applied, respectively. A multivariate model adjusting for age, seasonality of blood draw, total energy intake, use of supplemental vitamin D, darker skin pigmentation, breast cancer stage, and waist-to-hip ratio was able to explain 28.8% of the observed variance in serum 25(OH)D concentrations. No significant associations were detected for body mass index or any dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry measures of body composition. CONCLUSIONS Considering the number of women who endorsed use of vitamin D supplementation, the prevalence of vitamin D deficiency among these African-American breast cancer survivors was high. Vitamin D supplementation, sun behavior, and waist-to-hip ratio may serve as future points of intervention to improve the vitamin D status of this minority survivor population.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Calcitriol (D) or 1,25(OH)2D3 inhibits the growth of several tumor cells including breast cancer cells, by activating cell death pathways. Menadione (MEN), a glutathione-depleting compound, may be used to potentiate the antiproliferative actions of D on cancer cells. We have previously shown in vitro that MEN improved D-induced growth arrest on breast cancer cell lines, inducing oxidative stress and DNA damage via ROS generation. Treatment with MEN+D resulted more effective than D or MEN alone. OBJECTIVE To study the in vivo effect of calcitriol, MEN or their combination on the development of murine transplantable triple negative breast tumor M-406 in its syngeneic host. METHODS Tumor M-406 was inoculated s.c., and when tumors reached the desired size, animals were randomly assigned to one of four groups receiving daily i.p. injections of either sterile saline solution (controls, C), MEN, D, or both (MEN+D). Body weight and tumor volume were recorded three times a week. Serum calcium was determined before and at the end of the treatment, at which time tumor samples were obtained for histological examination. RESULTS None of the drugs, alone or in combination, affected mice body weight in the period studied. The combined treatment reduced tumor growth rate (C vs. MEN+D, P<0.05) and the corresponding histological sections exhibited small remaining areas of viable tumor only in the periphery. A concomitant DNA fragmentation was observed in all treated groups and MEN potentiated the calcitriol effect on tumor growth. CONCLUSIONS As previously observed in vitro, treatment with MEN and D delayed tumor growth in vivo more efficiently than the individual drugs, with evident signals of apoptosis induction. Our results propose an alternative protocol to treat triple negative breast cancer, using GSH depleting drugs together with calcitriol, which would allow lower doses of the steroid to maintain the antitumor effect while diminishing its adverse pharmacological effects.

Abstract
AimTriple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) is characterised by shorter overall survival and an early peak of distant recurrences with still no specific targeted treatment available. Vitamin D receptor (VDR) and insulin-like growth factor receptor 1 (IGFR) have recently been described as potential new targets for anticancer therapy, yet their roles in TNBCs are still to be explored. In this study we investigated VDR and IGFR expression in patients with TNBC and compared them with clinical and pathological parameters and survival to possibly demonstrate their prognostic and therapeutic relevance.MethodsThe study included 96 patients with TNBC. Clinical and pathological parameters were compared with the immunohistochemical expression of VDR and IGFR.ResultsPositive VDR immunostaining was present in 27% of tumours and inversely correlated with higher mitotic score, histological grade and higher proliferation index measured by Ki-67 and related to the increased overall survival (OS). Out of 96 patients with TNBC, 35.5% of tumours were IGFR positive and correlated with higher mitotic score and Ki-67, and strongly correlated with shorter disease-free survival (DFS). Patients with VDR-negative and IGF-positive tumours had significantly lower DFS and OS.ConclusionApproximately one third of TNBCs express VDR and/or IGFR. Their expression is linked with the recurrence of the disease and survival, which make them possible targets for treatment and a prognostic tool for dividing TNBCs into more homogeneous subgroups.

Abstract
Context: Lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTSs) in elderly males are usually related to benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) in the majority of cases. It is estimated that BPH affects half of men above the age of 50 years. Recently, a relationship between Vitamin D deficiency and LUTS in elderly males has been reported. Aims: The aim of this study was to analyze Vitamin D levels in males aged above 50 years presenting with LUTS. Settings and Design: This is a prospective case–control study. Patients and Methods: This was a case–control study in which males above 50 years of age who presented with LUTS (Group A) were compared with a control group (Group B) without LUTS. Both groups were investigated regarding Vitamin D level, prostate-specific antigen (PSA), International Prostatic Symptoms Score (IPSS), prostate size, flow rate, serum calcium levels, and abdominal ultrasonography. Statistical Analysis Used: Statistical software package (SPSS Inc., Chicago, IL, USA) was used for the statistical analyses, performing t-test for quantitative data to compare between the two groups. Pearson's correlation coefficient “r” test was calculated between two quantitative, continuous variables in Group A. P <0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results: A total of 150 patients were studied. There were 70 and 80 patients in Groups A and B, respectively. The mean age of Group A patients was 60.32 ± 11.93 years versus 58.12 ± 10.55 years for Group B patients (P > 0.05). The mean value of Vitamin D level was 40.82 ± 29.46 nmol/L in Group A and 70.25 ± 22.42 nmol/L in Group B (P < 0.001). The mean value of prostate size was 50.12 ± 23.24 g in Group A and 30.68 ± 4.90 g in Group B (P < 0.001). The mean serum calcium level was 2.4 ± 0.14 mmol/L and 2.50 ± 0.15 mmol/L in Groups A and B, respectively (P < 0.001). The mean value of PSA in Group A was 2.24 ± 1.95 ng/ml versus 2.11 ± 0.45 ng/ml in Group B (P < 0.001). The mean value of IPSS in Group A was 13.38 ± 5.32 ml/s versus 3.41 ± 2.42 ml/s in Group B. The mean value of Q max in uroflowmetry in Group A was 11.5 ± 2 ml/s versus 15.4 ± 1 ml/s in Group B. Conclusions: Men older than 50 years of age with LUTS have lower levels of Vitamin D compared to men without LUTS.

Abstract
AIM AND BACKGROUND Environmental exposures are known to play a role in the development of cancer, including breast cancer. There are known associations of breast cancer with environmental factors such as sunlight exposure, diet and exercise and alcohol consumption as well as physiological factors. This study examines the prevalence of risk factors for breast cancer related to dietary intake, environment and lifestyle in the female population of Malta. Malta has had little research in this area, and therefore an exploratory study was carried out. METHODS A retrospective case-control design was applied. Two hundred cases and 403 controls were included. Both cases and controls were subjects without a known family history for breast cancer. Controls were age-matched to cases in an age-decade category roughly at a 2:1 ratio. Interviews were carried out face-to-face using a questionnaire designed by Maltese and Sicilian researchers, encompassing various factors including diet, lifestyle, physiological factors and medical history. Breast cancer risk was then analysed using both univariate and multivariate analyses. For factors having a metric scale, the Mann-Whitney test was used to compare mean scores, while for categorical factors, the chi-square test was used to compare percentages between the case and control groups. Statistical modelling was carried out using binary logistic regression to relate the likelihood of breast cancer to over 50 risk/protective factors analysed collectively. RESULTS Univariate analysis showed around 20 parameters of interest, 14 of which were statistically significant at a 0.05 level of significance. Logistic regression analysis identified 11 predictors of interest that were statistically significant. Tomato, coffee and canned meat consumption were associated with lower likelihood of breast cancer (OR = 0.988, 0.901, 0.892, respectively), whereas beans and cabbage consumption and low sodium salt were positively associated with breast cancer (OR = 1.045, 1.834, 1.028, respectively). Premenopausal status was associated with a lower risk of breast cancer compared to postmenopausal status (OR = 0.067). Not having experienced myocardial infarction was associated with lower odds of breast cancer (OR = 0.331). Increased height was also found to have a strong association with risk of breast cancer, with the odds of having breast cancer increasing for every centimetre increase in height (OR = 1.048). In terms of quantity, odds of having breast cancer were lower in those exposed to sunlight (OR = 0.891). The odds of having breast cancer were also lower in those not using the oral contraceptive pill (OR = 0.454). CONCLUSIONS Various factors in this exploratory study were found to be associated with development of breast cancer. While causal conclusions cannot be made, tomato consumption is of particular interest, as these results corroborate findings found in other studies. A negative association of breast cancer with sunlight exposure and oral contraceptive pill use corroborates findings in other studies. Other associations with dietary intake can be explained by dietary changes. More robust studies in this area, including possible longitudinal studies, are warranted.

Abstract
Signaling pathways of the vitamin D receptor (VDR) and the triggering receptor expressed on myeloid cells (TREM) have been independently implicated in the biology of numerous of cutaneous pathologies. There is substantial evidence for possible crosstalk between these pathways, though the relationship between VDR and TREMs remains unclear. In this study, we characterize the effects of vitamin D-deficiency and sufficiency on the cutaneous expression of TREM-1, TREM-2, VDR, HMGB1, and RAGE. Cutaneous tissue isolated from Yucatan microswine were immunohistochemically evaluated for epidermal expression of TREM-1, TREM-2, VDR, HMGB1, and RAGE. The swine were fed a vitamin D-deficient or vitamin D-sufficient diet to examine the role of vitamin D state on levels of these markers. In vitamin D-sufficient animals, keratinocytes exhibited elevated levels of TREM-1, TREM-2. Additionally, TREM-1 expression predominated in basal cells, whereas TREM-2 levels were higher in keratinocytes, regardless of vitamin D state. Levels of HMGB1 and RAGE did not differ by vitamin D state. VDR expression was consistently higher in the cytoplasm and nuclei of basal cells, when compared to keratinocytes. Our findings suggest a role of vitamin D in signaling of TREM pathways. Additionally, the TREM ratio may play a role in keratinocyte differentiation and should be explored further. Possible signaling crosstalk between these pathways has a potential role in progression of cutaneous malignancies and other inflammatory pathologies.

Abstract
Purpose. Active surveillance is an emergent strategy for management of indolent prostate cancer. Our institution's watchful waiting protocol, Active Holistic Surveillance (AHS), implements close monitoring for disease progression along with various chemopreventive agents and attempts to reduce unnecessary biopsies. Our objective is to report on the treatment rates of men on our AHS protocol as well as determine reasons for progression. Materials/Methods. Low risk and low-intermediate risk patients were enrolled in AHS at Winthrop University Hospital between February 2002 and August 2015. Our IRB-approved study analyzed survival rate, discontinuation rates, and definitive treatments for patients in our AHS cohort. Results. 235 patients met inclusion criteria. Median age and follow-up for the cohort were 66 (44-88) years and 42 (3-166) months, respectively. The overall survival for the cohort was 99.6% and the disease specific survival was 100%. A total of 27 (11.5%) patients discontinued AHS. Conclusion. The incorporation of chemopreventive agents in our AHS protocol has allowed patients to prolong definitive treatment for many years. Longer follow-up and additional studies are necessary to further validate the effectiveness of AHS.

Abstract
Invasive cancer risk is inversely related to ultraviolet light exposure. This study explores relationships between cancer and the satellite-derived sunlight energy. We obtained the North America Land Data Assimilation System (NLDAS) daily average sunlight for the continental United States from 1999-2011. US Cancer Statistics age-adjusted-incidence and mortality was also obtained from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). We found that cancer incidence for all invasive cancers and for 11 of 22 leading cancers significantly decreased with increased solar radiation. Cancer mortality for all invasive cancers was not significantly associated with solar radiation, but for 7 of 22 leading cancers, including cancers of the uterus, leukemias, lung, ovary, and urinary bladder, increased solar radiation predicted decreased mortality. With increasing solar radiation, increased incidence and cancer mortality was observed for liver cancer and increased incidence but not mortality was observed for cervical cancer. The current study confirms studies relating UV radiation to the incidence and mortality of a variety of cancer types. We find associations between solar radiation energy and the incidence and mortality of a number of types of cancers.
