Abstract
Purpose: Differences in depression and loneliness, during the COVID-19 pandemic, for older adults with mild to moderate dementia living in residential care after interacting with a robotic companion dog or cat were explored. Experiences of family members and professional caregivers were also examined. Design: This study used a mixed research design with pre- and post-questionnaires on depression and loneliness. Method: Quantitative data exploring the impact of companion pets on depression and loneliness were collected from participants pre-intervention and at 3- and 6-week intervals. Qualitative data were collected during the 6-week study period, permitting researchers to explore the impact of robotic companion pets on participants, family members, and professional caregivers. Findings: Results indicated depression (χ2F(2) = 21.29, p < 0.001) and loneliness (χ2F(2) = 21.11, p < 0.001) improved. Moreover, participants were engaged with their companion pet, providing meaningful, activity and positive experiences. Conclusions: Robotic companion pet therapy, a holistic, nonpharmacologic animal-assisted therapy (AAT), changed the AAT landscape at the study site and provided an alternative option to live pet therapy during COVID-19. Participant interactions with their robotic companion pets enhanced their well-being and quality of life, especially during stringent COVID-19 restrictions and social isolation.

Abstract
PURPOSE AND RATIONALE Improved and appropriate utilization of depression screening will increase the quality of life for those individuals with dementia who may have undetected or untreated depression. SYNTHESIS OF EVIDENCE Depressive symptoms may be an early sign of dementia or occur at any stage. PROPOSED CHANGE AND IMPLEMENTATION STRATEGIES An algorithm was piloted in which initial cognitive screenings were administered prior to using either the Cornell Scale for Depression in Dementia (CSDD) screen or Geriatric Depression Scale Short Form (GDS-SF) screen. EVALUATION Findings included an increase in depression screening and an improvement of clinician knowledge of screening tools. CONCLUSIONS AND IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE This project enhanced knowledge among the clinicians, however, only one provider improved practices.

Abstract
The identification of mechanisms associated with Alzheimer's disease (AD) development in mild cognitive impairment (MCI) would be of great usefulness to clarify AD pathogenesis and to develop preventive and therapeutic strategies. In this study, blood levels of the candidate microRNAs (small noncoding RNAs that play a pivotal role in gene expression) miR-146a, miR-181a, miR-181b, miR-24-3p, miR-186a, miR-101, miR-339, miR-590, and miR-22 have been investigated for association to AD conversion within 2 years in a group of 45 patients with MCI. Baseline miR-146a (p = 0.036) and miR-181a (p = 0.026) showed a significant upregulation in patients with MCI who later converted to AD. These alterations were related to AD hallmarks: a significant negative correlation was found with amyloid beta cerebrospinal fluid concentration for miR-146a (p = 0.006) and miR-181a (p = 0.001). Moreover, higher levels of miR-146a were associated to apolipoprotein E ε4 allele presence, smaller volume of the hippocampus (p = 0.045) and of the CA1 (p = 0.013) and the subiculum (p = 0.027) subfields. Increased levels of miR-146a (p = 0.031) and miR-181a (p = 0.002) were also linked with diffusivity alterations in the cingulum. These data support a role for miR-146a and miR-181a in the mechanisms of AD progression.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES For mental health outreach programs for older adults, accurately detecting depression is key to quality service provision. Multiple factors, including gender, cognitive impairment, or recent bereavement may affect depression detection, but this is under-studied. Therefore, we sought to both establish rates of depressive symptom detection and to examine factors associated with inaccuracies of detecting depression among participants in a mental health outreach program serving older adults. METHOD We conducted a chart review of 1126 cases in an older adult-focused mental health outreach program in New Hampshire, the Referral Education Assistance & Prevention (REAP) program. Accuracy of depression detection was identified by comparing screen-positive scores for depressive symptoms on the 15-item Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS) to depression identification by counselors on a 'presenting concerns' list. RESULTS Inaccurate depression detection (positive on the GDS but depression not identified by counselors) occurred in 27.6% of cases. Multivariate regression analyses indicated that anxiety, cognitive concerns, and rurality were all associated with detection innaccuracy. CONCLUSION This study appears to be the first to examine factors influencing depression detection in a mental health outreach program. Future efforts should help ensure that all older mental health outreach clients have depression detected at optimal rates.
